Council pledges to eradicate bucket system ERADICATING the bucket system will top the municipality’s agenda to improve living standards in informal settlements over the next four years. That was the pledge made by Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen in her State of the Municipality Address, delivered to a small gathering at Lombardini yesterday. She said it was of great concern that more than 4 000 households still relied on bucket toilets in Kouga despite the national deadline for the eradication of this system having come and gone more than a decade ago. She said the continued use of bucket toilets by poor communities could not be tolerated. “By the time this Council term ends, we do not want a single household to rely on buckets. We have been exploring various alternatives and would like to roll out container ablution facilities in informal areas from the new financial year.” She said that while some of the municipality’s day-to-day operations have been affected by the re-allocation of funds to implement drought relief measures, the municipality would be pushing ahead with the upgrading of informal settlements and projects for

which grant funding has been allocated. “Almost 250 households at Donkerhoek received electricity for this first time in June last year and we will be electrifying a further 270 sites this year. “The formalisation of Stofwolk at Hankey is also underway,” she said. “When it comes to bulk sewer upgrades, the good news is that the R85-million upgrade of the Kruisfontein waste water treatment works at Humansdorp has reached practical completion. “Thanks to the upgrade, the plant will now be able to handle up to 5Ml of sewerage per day. This is sufficient to cater for the existing needs of the Kruisfontein community and will enable government to build further RDP houses.” She said work on the first 391 RDP houses at Kruisfontein started last year and that work on the top structures of 220 RDP houses at Pellsrus was also expected to commence this year. “A further R51-million have further been secured for the upgrading of the St Francis Waste Water Treatment Works and a consultant and contractor have been appointed,” she added.

KOUGA Municipality is beefing up its Town Planning Department to accelerate economic growth and job creation in the region. In her State of the Municipality Address, delivered yesterday at Lombardini, Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the municipality’s new Town Planning Department would be the “driving force behind local economic development”. “One of the great tragedies of the previous administration was that they failed to recognise how important a role the Town Planning Department of a municipality plays in facilitating growth. “Every plan and application that is approved, is money being injected into the region and jobs being created. The total value of building plans approved in the previous quarter alone was more than R212-million,” she said. “The Town Planning Department is also often an entry point for potential investors,

which makes it all the more important for this section to create a good first impression.” She said the department had been allowed to fall to pieces under the previous administration. “Critical posts were left vacant, leading to delays in processing applications and lost development opportunity. “To make matters worse, the department was then moved from the municipal headquarters in Jeffreys Bay to an unmarked residential house in Humansdorp, without sufficient office or filing space.” She said several key positions in the department have now been filled, including the appointment of Kobus Marais as the new manager. “We are also in the process of moving the Town Planning offices to the old Sassa building in Woltemade Street, Jeffreys Bay, which will allow for a more efficient and professional service.”

Appeal for youth development KOUGA Executive Mayor ELza van Lingen has called on business to develop mentorship programmes to help shape young talent in the region. In her State of the Municipality Address yesterday the Mayor thanked the local business sector for their support over the past year. “By working with business, we were able to do more for our communities and we look forward to building on these successes. “The municipality will, in return, accelerate its efforts to grow local business, the economy and jobs,” she said. She said skills development programmes, especially for the youth, would be among the municipality’s focus areas. “Thirty-six learnerships have already been lined up this year in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Archives and Records Management, Human Resource Management and Public Administration.” She further encouraged local businesses to register as service providers with the municipality. “Increasing how much business we do locally is important and we would like to encourage local businesses to register as

service providers with the municipality, so as to enable us to do business with you. “The good news is that many businesses that stopped doing business with the municipality years ago because they were not being paid, have started re-registering on the database, a clear sign that confidence is being restored in our municipality.” She said one of the big economic shocks for Kouga the past year had been the news that the proposed nuclear development at Thyspunt would not be happening soon, if ever. “Fortunately, there has always been far more to Kouga than just Thyspunt. There is tremendous room for growth in many sectors - be it Tourism, Agri-processing or the Ocean Economy – and, as a Council, we will endeavour to unlock the full economic potential of our area.” She said Kouga also recently established a three-year partnership with the Canadian municipality of Prince Edward County, specifically aimed at identifying and driving sustainable local economic development initiatives in our region. A delegation from the municipality will be visiting Kouga in March to take the partnership forward.

Pastor Brad Jones: Going the second mile JANNIE HOUGH “IT’S not how you talk – it’s how you walk,” seems to be the motto according to which Jeffreys Bay Baptist Pastor Brad Jones lives. He recently decided to take part in the exhausting 36ONE MTB Challenge in Oudtshoorn to raise funds for JBay’s 7th Heaven Children’s Haven. He is undertaking this venture on his own, with a friend from Johannesburg, Richard van Lieshout to help lessen the murderous impact of the 360km off-road cycling on April 22. Besides their love for cycling, they want the public to be aware of the children’s haven that cares for abandoned and “children in risk.” Volunteer director Irene Bradley explains their vision: “7th Heaven has a number of permanent children, as well as children that are

looked after for different lengths of time. We believe education is key for these children, and we want to give them the best opportunity to alter the trajectory of their lives.” Since education is costly they decided to do the 36ONE Challenge to raise awareness for the altruistic work, and to raise funds for school fees and materials. This was how Pedal for School Fees came into being. Pastor Jones realises the immense challenge lying ahead of them, but caring for the future well-being of those in need seems more important than the physical aches and pains that will follow after the race. MONIQUE BASSON HIER kom ek!

Parvo virus kills - vaccinate now VETERINARIANS in Jeffreys Bay are seeing a severe outbreak of the killer disease - Parvo virus, known by the public as “katgriep”. The name is completely incorrect, as it has nothing to do with cats and does not cause symptoms of flu. The disease affects unvaccinated or poorly vaccinated dogs and causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Left untreated dogs will die a painful death.

Young dogs are particularly susceptible and a single vaccination is not enough. Many people believe that a dog that has had one puppy vaccination will be immune to parvo virus - this is completely incorrect. Puppies need at least two and sometimes three vaccinations to be protected. Young adult dogs that were not properly vaccinated as puppies will contract the disease as well. Adult dogs that have not been vaccinated

for a number of years can also become ill. Even dogs that never leave the premises can pick up the virus, as it spreads extremely easily and lives in the environment for many years. Treatment involves hospitalisation in an isolation unit with intensive nursing, intravenous fluid and antibiotics and the costs can run into thousands of Rands. Proper vaccination is imperative and will prevent the disease.

Cyclists to ride 900km to aid Operation Smile THANDI SETOKOE A GROUP of local cyclists will start a gruelling 900km journey from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town tomorrow, in a bid to help create awareness and funds for Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a rescue project which enables children born with facial deformities, such as cleft lip and cleft palate, to undergo reconstructive surgery. According to cyclist Martin Glaum, the team, which consists of 13 cyclists, will cycle approximately 80km to 100km per day to cover the full distance to Cape Town and this will take place in the duration of 10 days. He said it takes a lot of commitment, dedication and effort to prepare for an endurance event of this magnitude as without the necessary preparation, the cyclists would not be able to complete the event. “Ever since I cycled the Langkloof route from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town three years ago, with a few friends, I wanted to repeat the process but this time for a good cause. “So, a few months ago we decided to make

that dream a reality and chose to support Operation Smile,” Glaum said. He said nothing could adequately prepare one’s body to cycle these kinds of distances for 10 consecutive days, “It’s all in the mind. Our group of riders are all reasonably fit from having fun on our MTB’s (mountain bikes), so, we just needed to toughen up our butts by spending longer hours in the saddle.” Training preparations went well, averaging at three rides per week, including indoor training and partaking in local cycle races. Operation Smile ambassador Shannon Smit said, “It costs a mere R5 600 to change a child’s life completely to rectify a cleft palate. We would like to use this opportunity to change as many lives as possible.” The ride will start from Bridge Street Brewery in Port Elizabeth at 18:30 and the group will stop at various towns, such as Jeffreys Bay on Friday, Storms River, Plettenberg Bay, Groot Brak, Riverdale and Hermanus, to name a few, where they will give talks on the importance of safe surgery, as well as the work done by Operation Smile. Following the Operation Smile cycling tour, the team will also participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour on March 11. Back row from left are, Travers Hendrick, Norma Jones, Ally Johnson, Rob Prideaux, Vanessa Dunbar, Wouter Roux, Jackie Glaum and Rob Ellingson. Seated are Martin Glaum (left) and Bruce Johnson.

Water tanks for SPCA Humansdorp THE SPCA Humansdorp received a touch of love in the form of two JoJo water tanks - ensuring that this non-profit organisation will not go without water. They received these much-needed tanks from Humansdorp Motors and Midas Humansdorp, while cash donations from residents enabled them to install the tanks and connect them to the main water supply. “The SPCA is not necessarily in a financial position to make provision for the necessary expenditure required to ensure a steady supply of water, which is vital in their daily function of taking care of the animals,” says SPCA Committee Member

Natassja Barnard. According to Barnard, they clean and disinfect the kennels and bedding twice daily. “We receive new animals on a daily basis. Not knowing anything about the new intakes, we need to keep our premises as hygienic as possible for the safety of all our animals and employees,” says Barnard. “It would be great if residents and businesses could assist us in acquiring one more water tank.” For more information, contact the SPCA Humansdorp at 042 295 2814 or 073 121 8963 (emergency).

KOUGA EXPRESS CANSA SHAVATHON

Raising funds one colour at a time PINK! Purple! Blue! Yellow! Green! Red! A rainbow of colours wherever you look. With a snip snip here . . . a dash of colour here and everywhere . . . and a whole lot of

fun and laughter, the Kouga Express team, in conjunction with Cansa Jeffreys Bay, Fountains Mall and Beautique Salon, raised muchneeded funds for the local Cansa branch. Thanks to the wonderful support of Kouga

residents, the fifth annual Kouga Express Cansa Shavathon was a great success. Some R3 075 was raised on the day. Apart from the Kouga Express team spraying residents’ hair a multitude of colours and

leaving some people bald, pony tails were also donated to make wigs for cancer patients. For more photos of the 2018 Kouga Express Cansa Shavathon, visit the Kouga Express Facebook Page - Kouga Express Newspaper.

GELUK IS GELUK, GEEN STRES MEER My naam is mev. Hy was geskok. Baie dankie Chief Oma dat jy my lewe en familie gered het. Jy is inderdaad geseën met geestelike krag. Skakel/Whatsapp vir ’n wonderwerk in jou lewe: 073 791 8805

AMICA . MICHELL . ZANLI . MC

Locals splash off in SA swim event MONIQUE BASSON Continued from page 1 HERE the likes of Hanré Louw, Andrew Ritchie, Dante Nortje, Eric le Roux, Aiden Peterson and Dylan Wright are sure to test their metal against the quality field. In the woman’s 5km and 10km events Michelle Weber will be keen to make amends after her mishap disqualification in the 10km race of the 2017 edition. That being said, 2017 FINA World Championship participants Robyn Kinghorn and Sasha Lee NordengenCorris are sure to take up the challenge, while Rebecca Meder, her sister Abigail and Carli Antonopoulos from the Western Cape, along with Amica, are sure to make a dash for the finish line. An exciting addition to the championship programme will see the 4 x 1.25km mixed relay being contested on Saturday afternoon on a provincial basis. “This event is without a doubt the highlight of the year on the open water swimming calendar,” says Holmes. “Watching our Olympic heroes and future stars battle it out, is going to be amazing.” According to Holmes, Amica, Michell Strydom, Zanli and MC are on the journey to be good swimmers - they have talent, discipline, strength of mind and a competitive spirit. “Each one of these four swimmers has their own goals. While Michell, Zanli and MC - who are fairly new to the sport - will compete to gain experience and national expo-

sure, Amica’s goal is to be selected for the South African team that will travel to the World Youth Open water Championships in Israel later this year,” says Holmes. The two golden rules for open water swimmers? “Always expect the unexpected and be flexible.” Kouga Mayor Elza van Lingen says, “The event brings together the best open swimmers in South Africa, and as the municipality we are very proud that Jeffreys Bay got the acknowledgement it deserves as one of the best water sports destinations. Marina Martinique, in particular, is internationally renowned as a world class open water swim venue. “Jeffreys Bay will host the South African Open Water Swim Championship until 2020, when the official Olympic Open Water Swim Trial will be held. As the municipality, we are in full support of the event, and we trust that the water sport fraternity, as they have done before, will organise a memorable event. “Part of our strategy is to attract more national and international level sporting events to places like Jeffreys Bay by tapping into the commercial and natural resources of the area. This bodes well for our tourism industry, with athletes, organisers and sports lovers flocking down to Kouga. Accommodation establishments, restaurants and other entertainment spots are kept busy during major events in the area. “We wish the event a world of success.” There will be a food market for all the hungry swimmers, parents and spectators.
