KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER 2017

Nuclear plan for Thyspunt put on hold SOUTH Africa’s nuclear programme took an unexpected turn last week when Eskom received authorisation from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to build a 4 000 MW nuclear power plant at Duynefontein near Koeberg. Kouga Acting Mayor Brenton Williams said the long-awaited Record of Decision (ROD), released by DEA on Thursday last week, came as a surprise to many people as Thyspunt near Oyster Bay had for decades been mooted as Eskom’s “preferred site”. “The ROD means that construction at Thyspunt has been delayed by years, if not halted forever,” he said. The municipality met with Eskom on Monday to discuss the way forward for Kouga and Thyspunt following the ROD. “We were pleased by Eskom’s assurance

that they would continue their support programme for science and maths learners at five Kouga high schools until at least 2019,” Williams said. “A Thyspunt Joint Project Steering Committee meeting will also still be held towards the end of November for Eskom to keep Kouga abreast of developments.” Williams said Eskom had indicated that any further nuclear plans would depend on the National Integrated Resource Plan, which is currently being revised and is expected to be finalised by March next year. “Currently, the plan makes allowance for 9 600 MW of nuclear power to be added to South Africa’s energy mix by 2030. This number could be revised, which will impact on the roll-out of the nuclear programme,” he said. According to the ROD, the primary reasons Duynefontein received the nod are:

) DEA believes that the overall environmental impacts associated with the Duynefontein site are acceptable and materially lower than those at the Thyspunt site. ) Duynefontein being adjacent to the existing Koeberg Nuclear Power Station allows for a suite of logistical and operational synergies. ) The incremental environmental impacts of the Duynefontein site are generally less than the impacts associated with development of the “Greenfields” site at Thyspunt. ) The refinement of the Duynefontein footprint to a terrestrial area of some 265 ha immediately north of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station and inland from the coast has materially reduced the footprint-related environmental impacts of the project. Eskom has, in the meantime, released a statement welcoming DEA’s permission for them to proceed with the nuclear installation

at Duynefontein. “While we had worked on Thyspunt being the preferred site ... we have always considered both sites equally capable of hosting a nuclear power plant,” Eskom’s Chief Nuclear Officer Dave Nicholls said. Five sites had initially been investigated at the scoping phase: Brazil and Schulpfontein in the Northern Cape, Bantamsklip and Duynefontein in the Western Cape, and Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape. “It is important to note that the other four sites are still usable in the future as no fatal flaws have been identified,” Nicholls said. “Going forward, we and GIBB, the independent environmental practitioner that compiled the Final Environmental Impact Report, will interrogate the decision and work within the regulations in terms of available options.”

National Council of Provinces visits Kouga THE National Council of Provinces (NCOP) visited Kouga last week as part of its two annual visits to provinces, with Eastern Cape being the focus in this round. Accompanied by the Eastern Cape Legislature, NCOP was represented by members Zukiswa Ncita and Thabiso Wana. Vumile Lwana was the Member of the Provincial Legislature present. Kouga Local Economic Development (LED) Portfolio Councillor Bryan Dhludhlu, who accompanied the delegation, said the visit included staff from the two houses, provincial government departments and the municipality. They visited the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm and the Eastern Cape Black Fishers Association. Ncita said the visit was part of parliament’s oversight work, in particular where public funds are involved. The purpose is also to listen to challenges raised to them by community bodies through correspondence. “We are the one House in our democratic system that has been given powers to hold accountable all spheres of government, from na-

tional government to a local municipality. “Our visits are not meant to police institutions. Our aim is to identify shortcomings where we can assist and to draw lessons from best practices which can be emulated,” said Ncita. First up was the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, where the delegation received an update on the progress of the project, the budget, their social responsibility programmes and where they sought assistance from government and the legislators. The Fishers Association presented on the plight of fishermen when they are out at sea, as well as challenges faced by divers, fish processors and other emerging businesses in the fishing industry. Dhludhlu said the municipality appreciated the importance of all arms of the state working together in serving communities. “At the end of the day, we all have the same goal of ensuring that the best services reach our people and that institutions tasked with serving the public are held to account,” he said.

Kouga prepares for circumcision season SUMMER is the traditional male circumcision season and Kouga roleplayers are gearing up to help ensure the safety of this year’s participants. Kouga Speaker Horatio Hendricks, under whose office the Local Initiation Forum falls, said a team from the Department of Health was currently visiting high schools in the region to talk to prospective initiates. In-service training for traditional surgeons and nurses was also held earlier in the week. “The custom is a rite of passage from being a boy to manhood for some sections of the so-

ciety, especially among the Xhosa people. It has, however, become marred by controversy due to instances of ill-treatment of initiates resulting in serious injuries and even death,” he said. “To curb this scourge, the provincial government introduced the Eastern Cape Customary Male Initiation Practice Act No 5 of 2016, signed into law by Premier Phumulo Masualle in December last year.” He said the school visits would be followed by community meetings, taking place between October 24 and November 21, where the

Circumcision Government Gazette would be presented. There will then be inspections of initiation schools by the teams on November 22. Hendricks said he was pleased with the efforts being made by stakeholders to achieve a successful and incident-free season. “Our area has been relatively quiet in terms of circumcision-related injuries and we haven’t had any deaths over the years. “That doesn’t mean we can afford to leave anything to chance. We have to comply with the provisions of the law and preserve the

lives of our children,” said Hendricks. The community meetings will start at 18:00 on: ) KwaNomzamo Community Hall on October 24 ) Vusumzi Landu Hall on October 25 ) Tokyo Sexwale Stadium (Jeffreys Bay) on November 13 ) Loerie Community Hall on November 16 ) Katrien Felix Community Hall (Thornhill) on November 16 ) Dan Sandi Community Hall (Patensie) on November 17 ) Sea Vista Community Hall on November 21 ) Alec Ntantiso Hall (Weston) on November 22.

He said the first election for Ward 11 had to be postponed due to a misunderstanding about the scheduled date. The second meeting, at which a committee was elected, was nullified by the Council after an appeal was lodged by one of the residents. Hendricks said it was important that all ward committees were fully functional and were in a position to perform their tasks. The elective meeting will take place at the Newton Hall at 18:00 on October 27. Ward 11 covers the areas of Jeffreys Bay Central and C-Place.

A new ward committee is set to be elected for Ward 11 at Jeffreys Bay on October 27. Kouga Speaker Horatio Hendricks said all Ward 11 residents were encouraged to attend the election. “Ward committees are important because they represent the aspirations of various constituencies in a ward. They are also good platforms through which residents can keep us, their elected leaders, accountable,” he said.

SUIWEL EN VLEISBEESINTERRASKAMPIOEN

Buco supports local NSRI

Buco Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp donated a skid unit to NSRI Jeffreys Bay to be used in the event of major incidents in the Kouga area. The unit will be used to fight fires, prevent the spread of fires, transfer water from any nearby source to a fire truck and to help move large volumes of water in flooding situations. “Although the NSRI’s primary focus is saving lives in the water, NSRI have in the past assisted our colleagues in emergency services during civil emergencies and natural disasters,” says Station 37 Station Commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg.

Konstruksie sal vroeg in 2018 'n aanvang neem. Vir meer inligting, skakel voorsitter Dolph Botha by 071 689 9761of sekretaris Danie Fouche by 082 921 3937. Voorsitter en Bestuur: AfriForum Jeffreysbaai-tak. X1U19PQ5-KG191017

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT: MAYOR ELZA VAN LINGEN

Early detection saves lives OCTOBER is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and PinkDrive has arrived in Kouga to offer a range of health screening services free of charge to both women and men from our communities. On behalf of the Kouga Council, I would like to thank Cennergi, the Kouga Wind Farm and Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm for making the outreach possible. Services available will include mammograms, pap smears, clinical breast examinations and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, as well as education regarding breast, cervical, prostrate and testicular cancer. The programme started at the KwaNomzamo Clinic yesterday (18 October) and is at the Sea Vista Clinic today and Pellsrus Clinic tomorrow. I would like to encourage residents to make use of this opportunity. Early detection can be a game changer when it comes to surviving cancer. Statistics show, for example, that more than 90% of women survive breast cancer if it is

detected early enough. It is important to remember that not everyone necessarily shows symptoms; hence annual check-ups such as those on offer from PinkDrive are highly recommended. Also important should you or a loved one be diagnosed with cancer, is to make use of the support structures that are available. Cancer is not a death sentence, but it is by no means an easy journey and drawing strength and inspiration from others makes every step you take just that little bit easier. From personal experience I can attest to the many incredible individuals and organisations in Kouga who will not hesitate to take the hand of a complete stranger to lead them out of the dark despair that can so easily take hold of cancer patients and their families. I would like to thank and salute these men and women, many of whom have had close personal encounters with cancer, for all they do on a daily basis to help ease the burden of others.

Knitted knockers for a ‘breast’ cause MONIQUE BASSON KNITTED knockers. Breast beanies. Tit bits. The names may be irreverent, but the intent is the same: offer uplifting support - via bra inserts - to women after breast cancer surgery. After giving away over 100 pairs of knitted knockers to local residents, Carine White and Tracey Wild - the driving force behind the knitted knockers campaign in Jeffreys Bay - still have some knitted knockers to give away to breast cancer survivors and patients. According to White, the knitted knockers are best described as special handmade breast prostheses for wom-

en who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to their breasts. “Unlike traditional breast prostheses that are usually expensive and uncomfortable, the knitted ones are soft, comfortable, beautiful and well placed in a regular bra,” says White. “Made from organic cotton and stuffed with merino wool, these woollen substitutes take the shape and feel of a real breast. They can be worn immediately after surgery, which women say is a huge help, mentally and physically, in returning to normal life.” Handmade by volunteers, they are given away free to women who have had mastectomies or lumpectomies. To receive a ‘Knitted Knocker’, contact Selina van Deventer at 084 513 6959 or Carine White at 082 781 1264.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month AILSA RAEDESHERWIN: ATTITUDE IS WHAT MATTERS MOST

Breast cancer survivor: ‘Don’t give into it’ MONIQUE BASSON HANKEY resident Ailsa Raede-Sherwin is a cancer survivor. But even before the cancer, she was a survivor - and she says it is all in the attitude you take. “I am still living with determination and spunk,” says the young senior burger who ran away from a retirement village in Port Elizabeth she called the funny farm. Raede-Sherwin, a former salon owner who moved to Hankey in 2005, was diagnosed with colon cancer on October 27, 1992 - only weeks after her husband, Dieter, passed away in her arms from lung cancer. Four years later, she received the shocking news that she had breast cancer. Since then, she’s been through myriads of treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. However, she made the decision that cancer is not going to become the centre of her world. “I can live with cancer, but it is not going to be my life,’ says Raede-Sherwin. It was her sense of humour and sheer determination that kept her going through the days of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. “Attitude is everything, it can make or break you,” she says. “It is going to help you and

your family in how you cope with things.” Raede-Sherwin says once diagnosed with breast cancer, she was given the option of a mastectomy or lumpectomy as the cancer has not yet spread. Even before she could make her final decision, another cancer patient entered the room. “She lifted up her top, and said: ‘Aisla, don’t worry, I had breast cancer’. All I could see was the two bags of bird seed pinned to her vest. I nearly passed out,” she says laughingly. “That was the most traumatic of the whole ordeal.” After hearing her late husband telling her not to do anything radical, Raede-Sherwin opted for the lumpectomy. “They took a slice of my chocolate cake away.” Some 21 years after the operation, she experienced some problems with the wound, which she had fixed earlier this month. She had another scare at the beginning of the year when she discovered a lump in her left breast. After numerous tests, she received an all-clear test result this Monday. “I have been really blessed on my cancer journey. I was surrounded by loving friends who supported me every step of the way - even when Dieter got sick. I want to say especially thank you to the day and night staff in Cedar Ward 3 at St George’s Hospital in Port Eliza-

beth who recently took such great care of me, as well as to Doctor Ronel Gowar who fixed up my wound and her wonderful personal assistant. Furthermore, I want to thank Hospice - without their support I would not have been able to look after Dieter. “Thank you to everyone who prayed for and supported me on this difficult journey.” Her message to other cancer patients?

“There are three kinds of healing: spiritual, mental and physical. I was blessed with all three, but not everyone is that fortunate. You must have faith that you will be healed, but if it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be. But you cannot give in, you must be strong. Do not let death walk in before it is its time.” Today, Raede-Sherwin is happy to call herself a cancer survivor.

RIANA VAN STADEN

‘I survived breast cancer’

ANNELI YOUNG

FEARLESS . . . happy . . . and healthy . . . are the words that carried Riana van Staden through her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. When she first felt a lump in her left breast in May 2015, alarm bells immediately went off. But with her medical aid not willing to cover the costs of the tests needed to be done, she waited a few weeks - but it did not go away. The lump only increased in size. After endless battles and excruciating weeks crawling by, the medical aid finally gave the green light for the biopsy to be done. The biopsy confirmed the news: Van Staden had breast cancer. Some 13 additional glands under her left arm were also infected. On September 10, 2015 - only a week after

being diagnosed - she was admitted for bilateral mastectomy surgery: the only viable treatment as the specific type of cancer she had, Lobular Carcinoma, could easily spread to her right breast and brain. Knowing this, the decision was not a difficult one to make. Instead of allowing the profound feeling of thinking her body was failing her, she chose to focus on prolonging her life by having her breasts removed.

Treatment Van Staden started with chemotherapy on October 13. But, despite taking her tablets religiously, routine blood tests and various injections, she only managed to complete three sessions of the scheduled 16 sessions of chemotherapy due to her white blood cell count being too low. After stopping the chemotherapy, she was

and adjusting the neckline of my clothes,” says Van Staden. “I made peace with my breastless body and I still feel good about myself.” Not feeling comfortable wearing prosthetic breasts, Van Staden, who never thought of herself as being sick, now wears knitted knockers which are best described as special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to their breasts. What message she would like to give women about breast cancer: women need to ‘get hands on’ and check their breasts for changes regularly. When you catch this disease early, you have options, you have time to consider them and you have the best chances of being okay at the end of it. subjected to 25 radiation treatments at 08:00 from Monday to Friday for five weeks. “It was extremely draining,” says Van Staden who was working at the time. “It left me tired and depleted.” Van Staden says she was only allowed to wash with clean water and had to dry herself by pressing on her skin with a towel. She was not allowed to use any powder or deodorant. Although the treatment catapulted her into early menopause, it did not have an impact on the intimate side of her marriage. “My husband and I were on this journey together. He supported me every step of the way,” says Van Staden. She got the all clear after an MRI-scan in October 2016. Not having the necessary funds for reconstructive surgery, Van Staden did not even consider breast reconstruction. “I accepted my situation by staying positive

FOTO:VERSKAF

Strongest Healer

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind your property, male enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

WITH Christmas fewer than three months away, the Kouga Express is once again appealing to residents to help warm the hearts of less fortunate children in the community. A train, farm animals, shoes, a tractor, a ball, a moment of your time . . . these are some of the simple things that could warm the hearts of children that have never received a colourful wrapped Christmas gift of their own. There is no better experience than seeing the surprise and elation on the faces of children as they open a gift and receive what they have wished for. This year the Kouga Express, in conjunction with Pick n Pay and Fountains Mall, will

be collecting gifts for over 300 pupils from Quagga Primary School in Patensie and Nooitgedacht Primary School in Kareedouw. The Kouga Express relies on the generosity of the community to satisfy the demand for presents. Without the support of local residents this appeal will fail. Each learner wrote his or her wish onto a special Christmas “wish card”, with his name and age. Wishes range from a tea set to a teddy bear and from a school bag to a doll. Some little boy is dreaming of his first ever tractor with farm animals, while another girl cannot wait to own beautiful hair accessories. One little boy is dreaming about a Jeep and another about a red bicycle. There are even practical wishes like stationery for school. These cards are displayed on the Christmas tree in the forecourt at Pick n Pay in Fountains Mall. Residents are able to select the wish card or cards that appeal to them and buy the gifts written on the cards. Residents can either wrap the presents themselves, or have them wrapped by the Kouga Express team. The following information must be clearly marked on the present: ) Name of school ) Name and surname of pupil ) Grade of pupil. Each card is unique to a deserving child. If a card is taken and not returned, that specific pupil could miss out on a present for Christmas. Presents can be dropped off at either the Kouga Express office at 75 Da Gama Road in Jeffreys Bay or at Pick n Pay. All the presents must be returned by November 15. The presents will be handed out to the pupils at a special Christmas party at their respective schools. For information, contact Monique Basson at 042 293 2973 or 082 219 9169.

St Francis Sharks rugby players honoured

HEILIE COMBRINCK

DIE gewilde The Meadows 4x4 Familiedag word vanjaar

Vir meer inligting skakel Donovan by 082 458 9699 of Sunelle by 082 458 9580.
