KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 18 JANUARY 2018

Shopping tills ring up festive season MONIQUE BASSON IT has been jingle tills all around this festive season, as Kouga business owners received a welcome boost to their coffers. Retailers and players in the tourism industry in Jeffreys Bay and surrounding towns recorded a welcome increase in revenue as they cashed in on the influx of domestic and international visitors. Hotels, guest houses and caravan parks were fully booked, while most popular restaurants were packed to capacity. Some restau-

rants even set new records and most retail outlets ended the festive period on a high note. Retail Outlets According to Fountains Mall Marketing Manager Nadine Scheepers, Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay can once again boast with fantastic results for the December 2017/ January 2018 period. Visitors to the mall increased by 2.2% and its turnover by 3.6% year-on-year. “Given the current economic climate, we as the management team, as well as the landlord, are satisfied with the festive season

trade,” says Scheepers. “Even though foot traffic flat lined in 2017 compared to 2016 calendar year, the turnover increased by 4%.” According to JP Venter, owner of Jeffreys Bay Superspar and partner at Hankey Spar, both shops showed an increase in turnover. “Although there were less visitors in town, we experienced a good season,” says Venter. Pick n Pay at Fountains Mall, also showed an increase in turnover. Restaurants According to Tampa Bay Spur owner André

Olivier, the popular family restaurant’s turnover is slightly down in comparison with the previous festive season. “On perfect beach-weather days, visitors to the Spur were few; however, on days when the weather was bad we experienced good trade,” says Olivier. “It was furthermore apparent that the spent per head is down in comparison with 2016/ 2017. This can be attributed to the increased fuel and accommodation prices. “Overall, we are happy with a good season.” De Viswijf Restaurant’s turnover increased by 5%.

Planning scores smooth festive for Kouga GOOD planning, preparedness and regular meetings ensured a smooth bumper festive season for Kouga. In addition to a festive preparedness plan, the Kouga Municipality held daily Venue Operations Centre (VOC) meetings in conjunction with the police and National Sea Rescue Institute, to continuously assess and resolve emerging challenges. “We are glad that we took this approach, as there was better coordination of services. This enabled us to make the festive season as pleasurable as possible for our residents and visitors,” says Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen. “The feedback we received from residents and visitors was very positive. We are truly grateful to the stakeholders for

their participation and guidance and we intend to keep this type of relationship going.” Basic Services The recently procured four refuse collection vehicles played a major role in ensuring that waste was collected on time, especially in the CBD areas where high volumes of waste were generated during the peak season. The teams worked seven days a week and additional staff were taken from the bush clearing and grass cutting teams to assist with litter picking and other cleansing duties. Public facilities were cleaned on a regular basis, while grass had been cut at entrances at the start of the season. Water and sanitation services were rendered with minimal hiccups, while the mu-

nicipality intensified its water-saving message as the drought persisted. Low pressure challenges affected water supply to some high-lying areas, while water shedding had to be imposed on Hankey and Patensie due to scarcity of water. There were no extended power interruptions during the season and the electrical department attended to complaints promptly. Waterside Leisure The lifeguards were on high alert, with more than 150 rescues conducted across all the beaches and the lagoon. There was a neardrowning rescue at Dolphin Beach where a 19year-old male was resuscitated and admitted to hospital. Sadly, on January 4, a 28-year-old local man drowned in St Francis Bay while

swimming with friends at a beach where no lifeguards are deployed. The body of the man was recovered three days later, about 300 metres from where he drowned. Missing children were reunited with parents on the same day of separation. Lifeguards also conducted treatments for a number of minor injuries from abrasions, heatstroke, dislocations and lacerations. Fire Services The fire services responded to a number of calls and managed to deal with these without any extensive damage being caused. There was, however, an unfortunate incident of a death of a person when a shack burnt down in Ocean View.

Municipality swoops down on road offenders MORE than 500 traffic fines were issued and a number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence of liquor this past festive season. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the Kouga Municipality planned ahead and was thus prepared for the influx of visitors and the increase in the volume of road users during the season. “We had a zero tolerance approach towards

lawlessness on the roads,” says Van Lingen. The Traffic Department conducted daily point duties, and increased visibility was the order of the day - especially around the busy towns. Between December 1 and 31, some 548 fines were issued for infringements ranging from jumping stop signs, driving without a licence, speeding, vehicle defects and taxis without operating licences. Six motorists were arrested for driving un-

der the influence of alcohol in separate cases during the operations. “It is unfortunate that we had two fatalities in separate incidents during the holiday,” says Van Lingen. A pedestrian was hit by a car and died on the scene near Thornhill in the early hours of Christmas Eve, while a passenger was killed when a car rolled near the old Gamtoos River Bridge in the early hours of January 2.

According to Van Lingen, law enforcement officers worked hard during a busy festive season to ensure everyone adhere to the municipal by-laws. Peace officers, furthermore, assisted with patrols along the coastline and regulated car guards who contributed in mitigating car break-ins and theft. The safety and security teams formed part of a daily Venue Operations Centre (VOC) with other stakeholders during the season.

Kouga’s search for more water continues KOUGA Municipality is working around the clock to secure more water sources for its residents as the drought continues, raising worries of water shortages in the near future. The water levels at the main dams supplying Kouga are critically low as the area has been hit by one of the worst and longest droughts. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the municipality was busy drilling boreholes to augment the current water supply. She said the municipality was also investigating desalination as an option to solve the water crisis facing Kouga. “A delegation from Kouga recently visited

Israel to learn from the world leaders in water technology. “The municipality will be appointing a consultant shortly to assist with bringing desalinated water into Kouga’s water mix,” she said. Van Lingen said that three new boreholes were drilled at Oyster Bay towards the end of last year. “The yield, at about two litres per second, is low, but this assisted the town in coping with the holiday influx as water levels were critically low in November,” she said. The town has two existing boreholes and a spring and does not rely on the Nelson Mandela Bay-controlled dams for supply.

Van Lingen said they were drilling two new boreholes in Jeffreys Bay while one was being rehabilitated. “The yield for these boreholes is still to be determined before they are brought online. Jeffreys Bay gets its water supply both from the Metro and the town’s boreholes,” she said. The Mayor said geophysics testing had been completed in Humansdorp and drilling for water would start outside the town next to the R330 road near the Melkhout substation shortly. Humansdorp uses spring water and gets the rest of its supply from the Metro dams. The municipality is looking at using water

from the dunes at Mosterthoek to supply St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis as the two towns are supplied through the Metro dams. The geophysics tests have also been completed in Hankey and the municipality is waiting for results before drilling can start, with the Zuurbron area showing preliminary signs of being the likeliest spot for another borehole. “We recently had to impose water shedding in Hankey and Patensie as the towns had almost used up all their quotas for the period ending June 2018,” said Van Lingen. Geophysics will also be conducted in the vicinity of the Kouga dam.

people were in possession of the green barcoded ID books and they then set out a strategy for a smooth roll-out. “We knew that one workstation could handle 28 card applications per day. It takes 17 minutes on average to finalise capturing an application. We were, therefore, able to estimate how many cards we could produce at a given time with the number of automated offices we had that were equipped with live capture. As a result, when we started, we had invited first-time applicants and senior citizens to be the first to apply for smart ID cards, free of charge,” Apleni explained. Over time, with more offices and automated systems, and reinforced by 14 bank branches on eHomeAffairs, they extended the coverage to other areas. “Of our 411 offices, 184 are currently equipped with live capture, which can process applica-

tions for smart ID cards and passports,” he said. “Discussions with participating banks are continuing to increase capacity through additional bank branches. Participating banks are Absa, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.” The department has encouraged those with access to the internet to apply for their smart ID cards and passports online, using the eHomeAffairs portal at www.dha.gov.za. “We are working on getting our systems fully automated and are also developing a mobile solution to support the roll-out of smart ID cards. “Between 2013 and 2017, we were able to reach the seven million milestone on smart cards issued. While we have 38 million people to cover, it should be clear these messages making the rounds, that March 2018 is the cut-off date, are devoid of truth and should, therefore, be ignored.”

Rumours about green ID books refuted RUMOURS that the green barcoded ID book will be discontinued have surfaced again, prompting the Department of Home Affairs to refute the claims once more. During their first briefing of 2018 on January 10, Home Affairs director general Mkuseli Apleni expressed his concern over the continuous claims that the lifespan of the green ID book would be terminated on March 31 this year and the effect it has had on South Africans. In a state of panic, a large number of people have swarmed to Home Affairs offices to apply for smart ID cards. The false claims first started circulating late last year and are making the rounds yet again on social media. “At the time, we had responded swiftly to say such reports are false and do not come from us. We are again confronted with the same incor-

rect reports from the beginning of January, circulating largely on social media,” Apleni said. “We, therefore, call upon members of the public to ignore these mischievous messages. Responding with panic affects our systems negatively, thus, making it very difficult for us to deliver services as expected: professionally and in the most humane of ways.” According to Apleni, their offices refuse to turn anyone away and are, therefore, left battling with long queues and frustrated people. “This is a situation to which we do not want to subject citizens and officials. It is in our interest that citizens should apply for and receive their secured smart ID cards; it is in their interest and in that of the country. But this has to be done systematically.” When the department rolled out the smart ID cards in 2013, their data showed that 38 million

FOTO:VERSKAF

These lunch box ideas for kids are so delicious, that parents will not be able to resist slipping one of these into their own lunch box. PHOTO:ANNELI YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHY

Lunch box ideas for kids SO, the kids are back at school and you have your free time back, but now begins the daily task of thinking up healthy lunch box ideas for kids. Do not stress, Executive Chef of the No5 by Mantis Hotel in Port Elizabeth, Wayne Myburgh, has done the hard work for you and found several lunch box ideas for you to try. Use these easy kids lunch recipes and ideas as they are, or use them for inspiration, and your child will be the envy of everyone on the playground. Kids will be delighted by their deliciousness as they are as moreish as they are nutritious. Hummus ) 1 tin of chick peas, drained and rinsed. ) 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds ) 1/2 teaspoon crushed garlic ) Salt and pepper to season ) Olive oil (add while blending) Add above ingredients into blender. Add olive oil while blending until desired consistency. Healthy hint: Use sliced cucumbers or baked pretzels as a dipping spoon! Bran and Mielie Muffins ) Shop bought packet of bran muffin mix ) 1x corn on the cob Follow cooking instructions for muffins. Add corn from 1 corncob and add to mixture. Bake. Allow to cool. Hint: add a cup of cheddar cheese for added flavour! Chicken Wraps Leftover chicken breasts with fresh lettuce, carrots and sliced cucumber rolled in a whole-wheat wrap. Add cream cheese and mayo for extra yum! Yoghurt ) 1 cup full cream plain yoghurt ) 1x store bought granola bar ) 1 x tablespoon honey ) 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Crush the granola bar over yoghurt. Add honey and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Cold meat sandwich ) Strips of cold meat ) Caramelised onions (chop 1x onion, pan fry in butter and add a dash of chutney. Fry until onions are soft and sticky) Add a layer of cream cheese on the slices of bread; place cold meat and onions on top with a few lettuce leaves for extra crunch factor.

Cheese and herb sticks Makes 16 to 20 long cheese straws. ) 2 sheets store-bought puff pastry, thawed. ) 1 1/2 cups grated mixed hard cheese, like Parmesan, Pecorino Romano, aged cheddar, etc. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Line two baking sheets with baking paper and set aside. Dust the counter with 1/4 cup of cheese. Unfold or unroll 1 sheet of puff pastry over top. If the pastry isn’t quite thawed, don’t force it. Let it sit on the counter for about 10 minutes, and then try unrolling or unfolding again.Top with another 1/4 cup of cheese. Roll out to 1/8-inch thick: This presses the cheese into the pastry and also smoothes out any seams or wrinkles. Fold the pastry in half.Top with another 1/4 cup of cheese. Roll out again to 1/8-inch thick and cut into strips. Transfer to baking sheet and twist: Transfer each strip to one of the baking sheets, spaced an inch or so apart. As you set them down, twist the ends in opposite directions to give the straws a spiralled look. If they start to untwist when you let go, gently press the ends into the parchment to make them stick. Chill for at least 10 minutes or up to an hour. Bake 15 to 25 minutes: (Exact baking time will depend on the size of your straws) Tip: Begin checking shorter straws after about 15 minutes, and longer straws after 20 minutes. Remove from the oven once they are puffed and crispy, feel dry to the touch, and are deep golden.Cool briefly on the baking sheet: Once the straws are firm enough to lift from the sheet without bending, transfer them to a cooling rack or serving plate. Bake the second tray of straws like the first. Hint: Experiment with adding minced fresh herbs, spices, or infused salt blends to the cheese straws. Sprinkle a teaspoon or two over the pastry along with the final addition of cheese. More ideas Kids do a lot of learning and running around, and they need loads of energy throughout the day. Make sure those lunch boxes come back empty by alternatively including a cold meat and salad sandwich on low GI brown bread, a banana, dried fruit kebab, droëwors, fruity water (slices of fresh fruit with water), as well as plain yoghurt, granola, honey and cinammon.

100% RESULTS OF MONEY BACK! TRUE MIRACLE OF ASEMBE To everyone who has serious financial problems, I am assuring you that to be born poor is not your mistake but if you die poor and leave your family suffering that is a big mistake. My number is 0835265579 I have been reading testimonies from different people thanking Asembe for changing their lives. He made them rich mainly with MAGIC WALLET that lots of people are using to get money everyday and weekly & they then pay back a weekly amount to Asembe. There is a lot of people with testimonies about Magic Wallet. I was on the verge of a financial breakdown because of fake prophets, doctors, herbalists & sangomsa that I have consulted before but they kept on asking more money without any results. I chose the short boys from Asembe to put money in my account, I was also 100% sure that he was going to help me just like the way he has helped a lot of other people. He promised me that the money will be in my account the next day. I was so suprised in the morning when I received a bank sms. I went to withdraw the money and paid him 40% from that money. I am now an independent woman, I started my transport business using the money form Asembe. My husband is also planning to start his own business after getting RATS from Asembe to put money in the house. Dont lose hope, I promise you, no matter how deep your financial problems are take a chance & call Asembe & he will help you with the best results. He also specialises with LOTTO, my friend won the lotto through lucky numbers given by Asembe & paid 30% to him. Dont waste your time. Just Call Asembe to make you rich & successful CALL 073 679 2509

SPECIAL THANKS TO PROF KULA Lizzelle 46yrs from Graaff Reinet, thank you Prof Kula for helping my family, my son was a drug & alcohol addict for yrs & I tried a lot of healers and prophets but all failed until I saw Prof Kula's advert in the newspaper. He came to our house and performed his spiritual prayers which chased away all evil and demons which was destroying my family. Prof Kula used his magic rats & short boys to bring money into our house that same night. With his powerful miracles he prayed for us and our marriage is better now and peaceful. All thanks to Prof Kula again. Please contact him should you have any problems. You pay after the job has been completed successfully or visit him in Port Elizabeth. Call or Whatsapp 063 383 6452

Anticipation rises for River Mile THE pre-entry excitement is rising as Nelson Mandela Bay gets ready for the 94th running of the historic River Mile that will take place on Sunday, February 18, at the picturesque Cannonville Village along the banks of the Sunday’s River. The inaugural race was first held in the river at Redhouse on January 20, 1924 and was declared by all to be a huge success. Perhaps the greatest feature of the race was the fact that 48 men started out and 44 completed the distance. As it is today, the race is a “two-in-one” race, for the first one to finish becomes the River Champion, while the first five from any one club become the champion team. Nelson Mandela Bay is honoured to host one of the world’s oldest swimming events. In recent years, the River Mile has enjoyed considerable popularity and has been extended to include other events, such as a 5km family fun run, off-road triathlons, a swim across the river for kids under the age of 12, a mile for disabled swimmers and a mile for those wearing wetsuits. Since relocating to Sunday’s River in 2010, the event has attracted well over 1 000 participants. The 94th running of the River Mile will see all events and festivities taking place on the same day and is expected to draw huge crowds, especially at the action-packed festival. The Smile Foundation is the charity highlighted by the event under the banner ‘Swim a Mile for a Smile’. Entry to the festival is R20 and gates will open at 7am. The first event, the 5km Family Fun Run, will start at 8am, followed by the About IT Off-Road Triathlons at 9am. Two distances are available for the triathlon, namely the short course (a 250m tide assisted swim) and a 20km MTB cycle and 5km run with a minimum age requirement of 16 (as at December 31, 2018). The long course triathlon is a 500m swim, 42km MTB cycle and a 10km run and the minimum age requirement is 20. The About IT triathlons are open to both individuals and teams. The swimming races will get underway at 11am with the increasingly popular ‘Across the River Races’ for children 12 years and under who are not taking part in the Mile events. This year the races will be run separately for the children’s age groups, as well as the special needs children’s race. The prize-giving for the children’s races will take place at 12:15pm. The disabled swimmers and swimmers in the Blu_Smooth Wetsuit Mile race will get underway at 12:30pm, followed by the Ladies’ Mile at 1:30pm and the Men’s Mile at 2:30pm. The prize-giving for the triathlon events and all the mile races will take place at 3:30pm. For more info and online registration, go to www.rivermile.co.za.

Ek is Lerato.

I am Phillip I wish I knew PROPHET PHASI long time before and I wouldn’t waste a lot of money to many sangoma, herbalist and even doctors. I saw a testimony in dairy sun and decided to contact him for my financial problems, I choose the MAGIC WALET to get R10 000 everyday and because he was far he send through a speed courier and I receive it the next morning and start using it. I am paying him every week R20 000 from the money that am getting, my son in law chooses to win lotto and we were shocked to see the numbers that he gave him appears on 3 August 2013 and he payed 20% from the money he won. Two of my friend decided to visit him in Port Elizabeth and Humansdorp. One chooses the SHORT BOYS to put money in his bank account and R680 000 was in his account after an hour and the other one chooses RATS to put money in his house, he was shocked to see R490 000 in his house in the morning and they payed 10% from the money they get. To all the people that I refer to him they said they have been helped the same day. I would like to thank the MARAIS family for their testimony as well as PROPHET PHASI for his help.
