With faith, belief and the support of many, the organisers behind the JBay Winterfest pulled off an incredible coup, and brought a festival worth in the proximity of R100 million to the town. PHOTO:BEAUTIQUE PHOTOGRPAHY

Winterfest worth R100 million THE town is buzzing. Surf, sun, people, music, brimming eateries - JBay rocks. The best news is the incredible coup of the Winterfest organisers in bringing a festival worth some R100 million to our town. The festival comprises of the JBay Open ASP Surfing Tournament, the VW Rally, the Music Festival, the Core Downhill Sokkie Jol skateboard event, the Poker Run skateboard

event, the Funduro event, the Oakley X-Over celebrity multi-disciple event, the JBay Mountain Bike Open, the Cold Water Swim Classic, the Skins Fishing Tournament, the Flamingo Trail run, the Kite Festival, the VW Rally and the Wavescape Swell Courses. All in a busy 10 days. Last year the JBay Open surfing tournament was a small-scale local event, and coupled with a somewhat smaller Winterfest, the

estimated value injected into the town was R20 million. This year there is a massively increased festival footprint, with a conservative estimate of an increased R20 million injection into the town. The surf event this year, run by ASP International, is valued at R35 million, and the incredible media exposure from TV, radio, print, online and social media worth another estimated R25 million.

Kouga Portfolio Councilor of Tourism Virginia Benjamin said that the expected economic value the Winterfest for the wider Jeffreys Bay region was in the region of R70 - 80 million at the media launch of the Festival on July 9. However, Benjamin probably did not include the media value and subsequent reach of the Festival, which is being tracked by the organisers of the JBay Winterfest. Continued on page 2

Winterfest worth R100 million “THE whole idea and concept of the JBay Winterfest was to bring more tourists to the town, as well as to supply much-needed jobs to locals,” said Winterfest organiser Koffie Jacobs. “We have the skills and the manpower in Jeffreys Bay and the immediate environs to cater for almost every single job opportunity that the festival has provided. There is very little need to employ people from overseas, or even from Cape Town, as we have all the necessary skills right here.” Koffie and Arthur Joubert are the two people who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to get the JBay Winterfest off the ground, and as with any event of this size and nature there have been many snags and loopholes. However, with the endless support of council and the municipality, they have pulled it off and provided a vital life-line to the cash-strapped town. Local Kouga Councillor Brenton Williams agrees. “Historically the economy of Jeffreys Bay has been based on tourism and looking into the future, a sustainable tourism indus-

try is the only viable mechanism to economic growth for the town,” said Williams. “The JBay Winterfest injects much-needed cash into Jeffreys Bay during the normally quiet winter months, and this boost ensures that small businesses can avoid the boom and bust cycles of the past. The organisers of the Winterfest have done an outstanding job in expanding the number of events on offer, and having the World Championship Tour (WCT) back in town has resulted in massive international media exposure for Jeffreys Bay. The Kouga Council is fully committed to supporting the tourism industry in Jeffreys Bay and looks forward to helping the Winterfest grow into the biggest Festival of its kind in the Eastern Cape.” Added to this, the Association Of Surfing Professionals, the governing body of Professional Surfing, are very excited to be back in town. “On behalf of the ASP and its surfers we could not be happier returning to the legendary wave of Supertubes. We are truly grateful to the town of Jeffreys Bay and the local community that supported us in coming back,” stated ASP Chief Marketing Officer, Graham Stapelberg. The JBay Winterfest is set to finish this

weekend with the finals of the JBay Open, as well as the Mountain Bike Open event, the Flamingo Trail Running event, and bands performing at the Jolly Dolphin. The Lucas Reunion and Jeremy Loop will be performing on Friday night, and the Music Festival will close off with 7th Son and Taxi Violence on Saturday night.

– Leolynn Smith

World’s best surfers stoked to be back TINNEKE GOEDHALS THE world’s best surfers set foot in town last week. They were stoked to be back in Jeffreys Bay after a two-year break from Supers known to create some of the best waves in the world. During the opening function of the ASP World Tour event at InFood at 10 Gama last Wednesday, they had the following to say about being back in JBay and the up-coming event. Taj Burrow (Aus) “When we got the news that we were coming back to JBay everyone was pretty excited. It’s really special to be here. We’ve got a lot of good friends here. The few new guys who have never been here are probably extra excited cause they would’ve heard how good this place is.” (Burrow came into the event ranked 4th. He was the ASP World Tour Runner Up in 1999 and 2007 and the ASP Rookie of the Year in 1999). Gabriel Medina (Brazil) “This is my first time in JBay and it feels good. I brought my family with me and everyone is enjoying it. I already had fun with some good surfs out there and I am excited for the event.” (Medina came into the event ranked first. Some of his career highlights include: youngest surfer ever to win a World Qualifying Surfing event at the age of 15 in 2009 and winning the ASP World Junior Championship in 2013. They say Medina could well become the first Brazilian to win a WCT world title.)

Jordy Smith (SA) “To have the event back in JBay, is not just only good for the surfers but for the town and for SA surfing. I think it is pretty awesome that the public get to see their idols go head to head. We just hope the swell hangs around and that we get some fun waves. I think its going to be a great event.” (Smith came in 11th into the event. He won the last ASP World Tour events in JBay in 2010 and 2011.) Mick Fanning (Aus) This is an event I always look forward to and to be back here is definitely special. JBay is one of those places that are just super iconic. Our fingers are crossed (or as it’s been said down here, we are holding thumbs) that we get good waves. The locals are so welcoming and warm. It feels like coming home to a family. (Fanning came into the event ranked 8th, but is carrying the title of the ASP World Tour event after winning it last year. He was also the overall champion 2007 and 2009). Michel Bourez (PYF) “It’s been such a good year for me. I’m just happy to be back in Jbay especially with these guys cause I know if the conditions get good they ‘can do big out there’. I just want to make sure that I do as well as them. Bourez came into the event ranked 2nd. Some of his career highlights include being first in the 2014 ASP Word tour at the Billabong Rio Pro in Brazil and winning the REEF Hawaiian Pro in 2013. ) At the time of going to print Burrow, Fanning and Medina were still in the competition.

Street lights, but no electricity MONIQUE BASSON MORE than R100 000 and a year later, the road linking Patensie and Ramaphosa Village still has no working street lights. Although 20 street poles were planted along this road in July last year and a connection fee of R110 000 was paid to Eskom, there is still no electricity lighting up the dark and dangerous road. Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele,

says: “A new development of a main sewerage light caused delays to proceedings. Some of the poles will now have to be moved as they are in the way. “This, and the connection by Eskom will guide us on when we can have working street lights on this stretch of the road. We can not say for certain when, but we hope that it will be soon.” According to Sobele, the project for the street lights, including the connection fee of Eskom, will cost approximately R400 000.

Festival with a ‘spring’ in its step SINOVUYO MAKHENKANE THE Humansdorp Tourism is set to celebrate spring with its first-ever Spring Festival - a day of seasonal crafts, good food, local beauties, music and general warm-weather merriment. Mark you calendars for the weekend of August 29 to 30 and rub shoulders with a former Miss SA, an Idols finalists and some of Kouga’s most ‘beautiful’ residents - all while enjoying a five-course gala dinner. Jolly Dolphin to crank up the volume EVEN though the annual JBay Winterfest is coming to an end, Jolly Dolphin is still cranking up the volume and throwing a mammoth party - boasting an impressive line-up of well-known South African performers.

The JBay Musicfest will host The Lucas Reunion and Jeremy Loops on July 18 at a cost of R120 per person, as well as 7th Son and Taxi Violence on July 19 at a cost of R100 per person. Tickets are available from Computicket.

Art exhibited in rustic environment HEILIE COMBRINCK THE art@factory art exhibition, set in an extra-ordinary environment with a rustic relaxed feel to it, will portray 50 paintings from established Eastern Cape artists as well as artworks from young artists. Various artists from the province, including artists from Jeffreys Bay, have accepted the invitation to participate in the art@factory same size, same prize art exhibition, which will be held in support of art at Bergsig Special School in Uitenhage. “The 13 learners who have chosen to be skilled in the craft of art, are now in their final year. In celebration of this milestone we would like to offer these young artists the privilege to have their work exhibited alongside prominent and professional artists,” said Luana Bester, local artist and art educator at Bergsig Special School. “There will be 50 artists, 50 paintings, all the same size (250x300mm) and same prize (R500). “Paintings should not be signed for the art exhibition, as we would like for it to exhibited

mansdorp as a holiday destination, as well as to promote the town’s rich heritage to tourists and locals alike,” says Humansdorp Tourism chairperson Raccinne Khan. “The festival will furthermore create temporary employment opportunities for residents. Local artists will also benefit from the stall where they will be able to sell and market their handmade crafts and products.” For more information or to book a stall at a cost of R50 per day, contact Khan at 0 081 271 3313. anonymously,” said Bester. All paintings will be sold at the same price (R500) and artists will be invited to sign their work after it has been sold. The exhibition will be held at the Bergsig Woodwork Workshop strategically where paintings will strategically be placed among machinery and wood. Artists Llise Dodd, Tersius van Huysteen, Less Bird and various other well-known artists from Port Elizabeth, East London and Jeffreys Bay are supporting the art@factory initiative. An art exhibition was also held during 2012, where 30 Eastern Cape artists joined young Bergsig artists at the successful French Café Art Exhibition. Funds raised during this event contributed in establishing an art studio at Bergsig. The art@factory same size, same price art exhibition, will be held at 18:30, Thursday, July 31 at Bergsig Special School. Entry is free and the public are invited to come and enjoy this feast of art from established as well as aspiring artists. Soup will be available. World’s best surfers join the fight to save rhinos THREE of the world’s best surfers, 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), two-time J-Bay Open event winner Jordy Smith (ZAF) and 1989 ASP World Champion Martin Potter, visited the Chipembere Rhino Foundation to help raise awareness about the conservation of South Africa’s rhinos and to find out more about the threat of poaching. “We met some people from the Chipembere Rhino Foundation to learn about the plight of the rhinos,” said Kelly Slater. “I was astounded by the number of the rhinos that are killed each year. There’s only about 25,000 rhinos left in the world and last year alone over 1,000 were killed in South Africa. I didn’t know all this, so coming here today was a real eye opener for me. It was great to see some rhinos and learn more about the conservation efforts.” “The rhinos are so mellow, they’re gentle giants and that makes it so unbelievable what people do to them,” said Jordy Smith. “We were educated on what’s actually going on and it was really mind blowing. These rhinos are the most amazing creatures that I’ve ever seen - so big, but so humble. To see what’s happening to them is really a huge tragedy. A huge thank you to everyone that was involved and I’m definitely going to spread the word.” The trio met with Dr. William Fowlds who explained the work of the Chipembere Rhino Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of South Africa’s rhinos. The Foundation’s main focus is to provide anti-poaching units with the right equipment and training, so that they can do a better job of protecting the species as well as raising awareness. “They are such an iconic animal and their value to us is indescribable,” said Dr. William Fowlds. “The support and awareness that we’re getting through the ASP, Kelly and Jordy is vital, because this is a global problem.

Visual art, classical sounds, rock and cabaret at Knock on Wood Fest EASTERN Cape lovers of the Arts are in for a treat at the end of July, when the Woodridge schools will, yet again, be opening their doors for the Knock on Wood Arts Fest. This exciting festival, taking place from July 28 to August 1, combines the traditional Eisteddfod concept with a more general celebration of the arts. No fewer than twenty Eastern Cape schools are participating in the Eisteddfod part of Knock on Wood, and during the day the main focus will be on the adjudication of these young artists. This year the addition of a Choir and Drama Category allows for the extension of the adjudication process to ensembles and to theatre as a means of expression. On July 27 at 14:00 the Choir Category will be preceded by a workshop in Choral Conducting by William Silk, choir adjudicator at the Fest. The cost of the workshop is R50 and further enquiries regarding this event can be directed to Gonda Kotze at gonda.kotze@woodridge.co.za. Informal, free of charge lunch-hour concerts in celebration of the ensemble-talents of Eastern Cape schools will provide a break from the adjudication process. School groups participating in these lunch-hour concerts include the St Dominic’s Priory and Strelitzia-marimba groups, the Victoria Park Steelband and Jazz Orchestra, the Greenwood band and a variety of Woodridge ensembles. During the evenings the Arts Fest-idea will be extended to a journey of discovery through a variety of musical styles and artistic media. On July 28 medallions will be awarded to the top participants at an exclusive exhibition of all the art works entered for the Fest. This exhibition will be open to festival-goers for the duration of the Knock on

We are not going to solve the crisis from within South Africa. The whole global community has to get behind this and the ASP is helping by sharing the reality of what happens. If we don’t get that message out we won’t ever be able to stop what’s happening.” South Africa is home to 73% of the world’s rhino population. According to the latest figures, more than 500 rhino have been poached in South Africa so far this year. Despite the efforts being made to combat poaching, the number of rhinos being killed continues to rise each year. “I knew there was poaching but I didn’t know to what extent,” said Martin Potter. “They’re losing three rhinos every day, that’s more than those born, which is staggering. What is more staggering is the way it’s happening. It’s very emotional to hear about, because it’s so brutal. This is one problem we can fix by spreading the word and educating the younger generation.”

Wood week. On July 29 at 18:30 the stage will be set for Paul Richard, Christo Greyling, Nicholas Fidler and Tiaan Uys. Whereas each of these outstanding musicians has already carved a niche for himself on the classical music scene, Paul Richard deserves special mention. This exceptional saxophonist, to whom the South African composer Hannes Taljaard has dedicated a number of works, was the winner of both the Epinal Music Competition in France and the Seventh National Grahamstown Music Competition. Knock on Wood gives a nod to Woodstock on July 30 at 18:30 when Hugo Kleinhans takes to the stage with Rob Thompson. Subsequent to their joint performance, Thompson, backed by Barry Killian (Bass) and Kristo Zondagh (Drums), will indulge in the special brand of blues-rock, which took him on a tour of the United States in 2011. This tour included performances with the acclaimed blues legend Ray Fuller, as well as an appearance at the Canal Blues Winchester Festival in Ohio, where the mayor presented Rob with the key of the city. The evening programme of the festival concludes on a high note on July 31 at 18:30, when the well-known Marelize Barnard / Niqui Cloete-Barrass duo will be treating the audience to a touch of musical theatre. Expect tons of style, humour and the allure of contemporary and evergreen hits from the worlds of contemporary music and musical theatre. Entry fees for the three evening concerts are R30 for adults and R20 for children, and refreshments and a light supper will be available. No booked seats are available. Timeous arrival will therefore be essential to avoid disappointment. Contact Steph Els at 0 041 956 6200.

KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 17 JULY 2014

Last weekend of Winterfest fun THIS weekend will see the JBay Montain Bike Open on Saturday and the Flamingo Trail Run on Sunday. The mountain biking event will take place at Fountains Mall at 08:00 on July 19. There will be 20km, 40km, 60km and 85km routes spanning several private farms in the area, and the various routes support all levels of riders. The 20km is aimed at youngsters and those doing an MTB race for the first time and will be a farm road loop. The first few kilometres of the three longer distances will be farm road, and is bound to be fast and will most likely split the bunch as riders head down towards the Seekoei River. Soon you will be on a cattle-walked singletrack, which will take you west along the Seekoei River through pockets of indigenous forest and riverine salt marsh. A slight drag up through an open field takes you away from the river back to the farm roads where the 40km route will split from the longer distances. From here the shorter distance riders can look forward to a more gentle open farm track and river-side riding as they route back down toward the Seekoei River. Then follow some fast district road, a brief section on the R102 and back to Fountains Mall via the farm roads, cattle tracks and freshly cut singletrack. Here the 60km and 80km route begin the first real technical challenges of the day. A few highlights come in this section with

the purpose-built wooden bridges and berms of race director Arthur Joubert’s property as well as a tight and twisty single track along an old riverbed and a tunnel of natural vegetation. No doubt the ‘tunnel’ will be a talking point over beers at the finish. After passing the Mall via the train track, both the 60km and the 85km routes pull up the gentle drag in the wild section between the R102 and N2. Corners, twists and turns through the Eastern Cape bush will make for some respite to the legs and lungs. On a clear day riders will also be able to see all the way across the bay from Paradise Beach to the tip of Cape St Francis. As the 60km route turns back down toward the Mall and enjoys a downhill jaunt, more climbing awaits the 85km route as riders meander up the valley behind the Kabeljous vlei. Necessary detour done, the 85km route flies home on the same track as the 60km route. The Flamingo Trail Run is set to take place on July 20 midday to embrace the low tide. There will be a 2km, a 12km and a 30km race. 12:00 might seem like an unusual time to start a 30km race, but there is method to the perceived madness. Low tide is at 16:00, and as around 18km of the route is on the beach down toward Kabeljous estuary, this will allow all runners to have the luxury of hard sand. Seun vang klein haai

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Kindertyd stranddorpie stel teleur EK is tans ‘n besoeker aan Oesterbaai. Groot was my teleurstelling toe ek deur my geliefde kindertyd-stranddorpie ry en sien in watter toestand dit is. Is dit waarheen vreemde besoekers sal wil kom? Die groot vraag is of Oesterbaai ‘n spookdorp gaan word, of gaan daar iewers ‘n reddingsboei vandaan kom? Teleurgestelde besoeker

CLASSIFIED 11

Fifth Women’s Day Trail Run around the corner ESTI STEWART THE fifth annual Enid Pretorius Properties Women’s Day Trail Run and Walk will take place around St Francis Bay at 09:00 on August 9 - Women’s Day. The main distance of the day is 26km, but due to the popularity of the route, the organisers introduced a new half marathon (21km) as well as a 15km distance through the areas normally closed to the public. “The original thought behind our annual Women’s Day event was to just enjoy the day in our beautiful surrounds, but the distance and weather conditions we often experience have turned the entire distance into a challenge,” says organiser Eric Stewart. “Trail runners love it, but to accommodate everyone and still give them the opportunity to go through private land where we get special permission for the event, we have included shorter distances. Athletes will be transported to the 21km and 15km starting points just after the 26km kicked off.” Online entries can be done at www.stfrancissport.co.za or entry forms can be collected from Enid Pretorius Properties in the St Francis Village Centre. The main race starts at the St Francis Golf Course adjacent to the offices, and proceeds through the St Francis Golf Course en route to the St Francis Links. The first water point will be at the St Francis Links Service gate, where the 21km participants will be taken to for the start of this

distance. The second waterpoint, on the Mostertshoek Road, will be the start of the 15km distance. No private vehicles will be allowed to enter the property, and participants will be dropped off together. The route will be along the Wild Side’s rocky shoreline. The third waterpoint will be at the Seal Point Lighthouse, from where runners and walkers will cross the Cape St Francis main beach and Shark Point to reach the fourth waterpoint at Port St Francis. They will then use the Two Harbours Walk route to get to the finish line at the Village Centre. The route will be well-marked and participants will each receive a description of the route to accommodate both runners and walkers. Some sections could be technical, especially towards the end. Certificates will be awarded to the top three male and female winners in each distance. True to the original event, a prize will be given to the oldest and youngest participant of the main event, running or walking, it doesn’t matter. The entry fee is R60 for the 15km, R80 for 21km and R120 for 26km. Juniors (under 17) pay R40 for the 15km, R60 for the 21km and R80 for the main event. There will be four well-stocked water points on the entire route. Number collection can be done from 08:00, and race briefing will take place at 08:45, all at the Enid Pretorius Properties offices. For more information, contact Esti Stewart at 0 073 825 0835 or Eric Stewart at 0 082 394 7363. Alternatively, send an email to info@stfrancissport.co.za.

Despite endless financial struggles and constraints, the Humansdorp Karate Club succeeded in raising enough funds to attend the tournament. However, they were not able to raise enough money to compete in all the karate disciplines The club competed in KATA, CLICKER and full contact and they managed to obtain a medal or trophy in each category. According to instructor Lwazi Finca, they are currently preparing for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Tournament on September 6 and for the National Champions Tournament in Durban, for selection for the World tournament next year November. “We would like to thank the community who contributed with donations, and the parents for allowing and encouraging their children to participate in Karate,” says Finca.

Completing her first cold water swim in just over two hours, Rebecca Newman won the Cold Water Classic held at Marina Martinque on Saturday. PHOTO:CLIVE WRIGHT

HUMANSDORP TOYOTA Tel: 042 295 1104

Rebecca wins Cold Water Classic WINDY conditions and icy 11 degree Celsius water greeted some of South Africa’s most extreme swimmers, who gathered at Marina Martinique to take on the JBay Cold Water Classic. Seven swimmers, all adhering to Channel rules, which meant that they could only wear a speedo, goggles and a swim cap, started the 7.5km swim – however only three managed to finish. “It was cold out there, but I settled down and actually enjoyed the chilly water,” said eventual winner Rebecca Newman, who completed her first cold water swim in just over two hours. Newman has her sights on a Robben Island crossing, and with the JBay Cold Water Classic in the bag, a successful crossing looms for Newman in the not too distant future. Last year’s winner Kevin Grey seemed to get stronger as the swim developed and finished second in 2 hours 7 minutes. Legendary Cape Town swimmer, Thedore Yach completed the swim in 2 hours 23 minutes. “It was a great event and the water was a bit chilly at 11 C, with a stiff wind against us,” said Yach after his swim.

Under the watchful eye of Coastal Water Rescue, the tough conditions got the better of the other four starters in the 7.5 K, who all voluntarily withdrew from the race. JC Van Wyk won the 2.5km swim for the second year in a row, with Chris de Chaves taking second position. 12-year-old Etienne Jordaan, the youngest swimmer on the day, finished in third position. Etienne took part in the Cold Water Classic last year and after succumbing to the cold water and having to withdraw, was determined to come back to Jeffreys Bay and complete the swim this year. South Africa also has another open water butterfly swimmer, with Kyle Harris completing the 2.5km swim just using the butterfly stroke. He swam the course with fellow flyer Brenton Williams, who was also the race director. “We are happy to have established the Marina Martinique as a legitimate cold water swim venue and are stoked that swimmers from all over South Africa made the trip to Jeffreys Bay for the event,” said Williams. The Cold Water Classic, presented by Nicholas Melck Properties forms part of the JBay WinterFest, a multisport festival that takes place every July in Jeffreys Bay.
