KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 14 DECEMBER 2017

Water warning as holiday crowds arrive KOUGA has brought in a second drilling rig to speed up the search for water as supply levels remain dangerously low. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said it was critical that all residents and visitors use water very sparingly so as to ensure taps don’t run dry over the festive season. Dam levels this week stood at 11,95% (Kouga), 20,6% (Churchill) and 47,61% (Mpofu). Van Lingen said the first exploratory borehole at Oyster Bay had failed to deliver the

water quality or yield that the municipality had hoped for. “The water is also brown, indicating high levels of manganese and iron,” she said. “A second borehole has since been drilled north of Umzamowethu. The water quality is good, but we are still busy testing the potential yield.” Drilling has also started at Jeffreys Bay. “We struck water about 140m below the surface but plan on going down to 200m to ensure we get as good and sustainable a yield as pos-

sible,” the Mayor said. “The drilling of a second exploratory borehole is also underway.” She said potential drilling sites have further been identified at Humansdorp while geophysics testing got underway at Hankey this week. She emphasised that despite extra boreholes being drilled, water restrictions remained firmly in place. “We have received complaints about people using hosepipes connected to the municipal water supply system. This is strictly prohibited.

“Forecasts indicate that the drought is far from over. We also expect a significant increase in the demand for water during the summer holiday season.” She urged all residents and visitors to use water only when necessary and very sparingly. Water leaks can be reported at the municipality’s call centre on 042 200 2200 during office hours or on 042 291 0250 and 042 200 8330 after hours. Youth Brigades to take housing forward

THIRTY-three young people from Humansdorp are benefitting from an artisan programme aimed at empowering unemployed youth. The Human Settlements Youth Brigade programme is an initiative of the Department of Human Settlements, the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). Its aim is to create a resource base for the department’s projects and to leave a legacy of well-trained artisans with entrepreneurial skills. At the provincial launch at Kruisfontein last week (5 December), Easter Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, said the Humansdorp group formed part of 185 Youth Brigades being trained in this financial year in the province. “In all the projects that we run, we must make sure that 30% of the budget is reserved for local beneficiation through employment and business contracting. “We hope that these youngsters will be ready to participate meaningfully as independent role-players in future projects,” she said.

Sauls-August said a critical part of the programme was to identify suitable large-scale government housing projects and then partner with major sector players, who have the capacity to mentor and oversee the youth training on site. Speaking on behalf of Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen, Speaker Horatio Hendricks thanked the department for creating an opportunity for Kouga’s youth to be involved in skills development programmes. “We hope that the young ones will grab this opportunity and inspire others to take such opportunities seriously,” he said. The Youth Brigades were recruited by the department and targeted those who had a maths and science background and were interested in the built environment industry. They are from Kruisfontein, Arcadia and KwaNomzamo, as the areas were deemed the closest to the current housing project which may be used for on-site training. The training programme is fully accredited, takes three years to complete and focuses on different aspects such as the technical side of construction, business and on-site mentoring.

SOME thirty-five families from Humansdorp received the biggest Christmas presents of their lives today when the first RDP houses of the Kruisfontein 391 project were handed over. Kouga Mayor Elza van Lingen said it was a joyful day for Kruisfontein. “No houses have been built in Kouga for the past 11 years and residents have been waiting patiently for this project to get going since it was approved in 2009. It is a big day for Humansdorp and our region as a whole,” she said. “It is heartening that local and provincial government were able to work together for the community and to ensure a new beginning for these beneficiaries.” MEC Helen Sauls-August and the East Cape Department of Human Settlements were also in attendance as hundreds of residents gathered at Kruisfontein for the handover. Ribbons were cut at three houses while the remaining 32 beneficiaries were introduced to the community at a ceremony. Among the first three beneficiaries who received their houses from the Mayor and MEC, was Paulina Magielies, a 62-year-old widow who depends on her pension to look

after herself and two adopted sons, Shelton Boesak (14) and Clayton Magielies (12). Magielies said she and the boys had shared a house with her mother as she could not afford to get her own place. “This is such a special day for our family. I have always trusted in God to look after us and today is an answer to my prayers,” she said. Also among the first three beneficiaries, was Connie Kabani (37), whose mother, Georgina, was one of the original beneficiaries of the housing project but sadly passed away before her house was completed. “I had to leave school when I was in grade 11 to work and look after my mother, as she was very ill. I have been the breadwinner of my family ever since. It hasn’t been easy. Receiving this house is an incredible blessing,” she said. The last of the first three beneficiaries were the Adams family, who earlier this year had lost everything in a fire. Spaas Adams, who was at the hand-over with her 11-year-old daughter Ilse, thanked the Department of Human Settelements and Kouga Municipality for giving them a place of their own to celebrate Christmas and the new year. “It is a new beginning for us,” she said.

Free vehicle assessments KOUGA Municipality is helping residents arrive safely at their holiday destinations this festive season. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says residents are invited to bring their vehicles to Kouga Municipality’s roadworthy centre in Humansdorp for free roadworthy/fitness tests. The free tests will be conducted from 07:30 to 13:00 until Friday, December 15. “No prosecution will be done if defects are found,” she says. “The owners will receive a list of defects, if any, to attend to before embarking on their holiday trip.” Residents are asked to take note that no certification will be issued, as this is a free additional service being offered this festive season. Meet cast of ‘Vuil Wasgoed’ AWARD winning film Vuil Wasgoed cast members Bouwer Bosch, Bennie Fourie and Leandie du Randt Bosch will visit the beaches of Jeffreys Bay on December 16 as part of their nationwide promotional tour. They are travelling with a heap of Vuil Wasgoed merchandise to hand out to fans, so if you see the Vuil Wasgoed van, make sure to stop for a selfie with the cast. Vuil Wasgoed The film, that recently won five awards at the kykNET Silwerskerm Festival in Camps Bay, was released nationwide in theatres on December 8. Wim (Bouwer Bosch) and Kevin (Bennie Fourie) have been dreaming of their own coffee shop for years, but while they wait for their dream to come true, they temporarily work in a laundromat. The problem is ‘temporarily’ has become seven years and the highlight of their existence is borrowing their clients’ clothes to gate-crash parties at night. The system works well. Kevin is even close

to kissing the love of his life, until a crooked jewel merchant is betrayed, his finger is chopped off and the finger ends up in a jacket pocket at the laundromat. Against their will, Wim and Kevin are dragged into the dangerous criminal world. Close on their heels are two brothers with a rash, a blind henchman, two top detectives and a ruthless traitor. And somewhere there’s a shipping container with a valuable treasure waiting to be pounced on by everyone. Vuil Wasgoed was written by Bennie Fourie, produced by Danie Bester, Bennie Fourie and Bouwer Bosch and directed by Morné Du Toit. The cast comprises of amongst others Bennie Fourie, Bouwer Bosch, Tim Theron, Stiaan Smith, Nico Panagio, Charlie Bouguenon, Simoné Nortmann and Leandie du Randt Bosch. Vuil Wasgoed won the awards for Best Director (Morné du Toit), Best Editing (Quinn Lubbe), Best Actor (Bennie Fourie), Best Production Design (Merishen Wessels) and Best Sound Design and Original Music (Benjamin Willem) at the Silwerskerm Festival 2017. The film has also been accepted to screen at the Portland International Film Festival.
