Kouga brings light to Donkerhoek

WAR ON WASTE: Social Services Acting Director Nomvula Machelesi, Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson and Acting Cleansing and Parks Manager Frank Tamboer receive the new consignment of skips. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

New bins to boost clean up efforts KOUGA Municipality has increased its efforts to fight illegal dumping and keep communities clean by acquiring 20 new skip bins. The 6m² containers, worth R348 840 in total, will be distributed to hot spots for illegal dumping. Social Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson says the distribution of the skip bins would be followed by an awareness campaign, run by the municipality’s Solid Waste and Cleansing and Parks sections. “The campaign will help to empower residents to contribute to the cleanliness of their communities. Small things can make a big difference; for example, we would like to caution adults not to send children to go and dispose of waste at skip bins. Youngsters cannot always reach the mouth of the container and then simply dump the contents next to the bin,” he says.

Benson added that the arrival of the skip bins did not mean that other measures to keep areas clean, such as refuse collection on scheduled days, would be done away with. “We are intensifying our war against waste so as to ensure that all of Kouga’s people live, work and play in clean and healthy environments,” says Benson. He also asked communities to be aware of the following: ) No fires must be made inside the skip bins, even if it is to burn waste; ) Only the municipality has the right to remove or clean the skip bins; ) Waste must be disposed of inside the bin, not next to it; and ) Children should be warned against playing in skip bins. To report illegal dumping, contact Kouga’s Solid Waste section on 042 200 8335 or the Cleansing and Parks section on 042 200 8381.

MORE than 200 families in Humansdorp received electricity for the first time this week. Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen switched on the power to 247 sites at the informal settlement of Donkerhoek on Tuesday. The project was completed at a cost of R6million and included the installation of a new 2km-long underground main line. Van Lingen said electrification was an important step towards eradicating informal areas and restoring the dignity of communities. “Electricity means much more than a light being switched on. It means the right to be able to do homework and study at night. It means a new opportunity to bring an end to poverty,” she said. “To give the best possible service to our people in Donkerhoek, we had to formalise this informal area, so we surveyed plots and allocated specific sites to community members.” She said the municipality had managed to secure a further R4-million with which the remaining sites at Donkerhoek, as well as plots at other informal areas, would be electrified. Scores of Donkerhoek residents gathered to watch the Mayor switch on the power at the new transformer. “It was an amazing event and ended up in spontaneous praise singing,” she said.

Fountains Malll - Parkering geen probleem JANNIE HOUGH WAAR parkeer gestremdes as nie-gestremdes hul parkeerplekke beset?

At the switch-on, Ward Councillor Freddy Campher said residents might now have to come up with a new name for the area. “Donkerhoek means ‘dark corner’ and those days are now over,” he said to loud applause. The switch-on was also attended by Member of Parliament Dr Malcolm Figg, who congratulated Kouga for not only bringing light to homes but putting food on communities’ tables as well. “We are pleased that this project created much-needed jobs for the local community. Our government considers this measure a great relief, particularly during this period of credit downgrades and economic recession,” he said. Community members Jody-Anne van Niekerk and Elizabeth Stompies, who have been living in Donkerhoek for more than ten years, said they were thrilled to have electricity for the first time. “Crime has been a big concern for our area, especially at night. The switch-on will help keep criminals at bay and increase the safety of everyone who lives here,” said Van Niekerk. Mayor Van Lingen said the Council was proud of the municipal team in the Electricity Department. “We thank them, our consulting engineers and the contractor for assisting us to bring change in Donkerhoek and in Kouga.”

Shock Labour Department bill for Kouga THE Kouga Council has been confronted with a shock bill from the Department of Labour – this one dating back ten years and totalling almost R13-million. Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the outstanding monies were for Return of Earnings (RoEs), required for what is commonly known as “workmen’s compensation” and payable annually by the municipality to the Compensation Commissioner at the Department of Labour “The Council recently made the shocking discovery that the municipality hadn’t been submitting its Return of Earnings to the Compensation Commissioner since 2007. “This means that municipal em-

ployees have not had proper cover for Injury on Duty claims for the past ten years, putting not only staff but Council at substantial risk.” She said the municipality owed the Department of Labour a total of R12,619 million, accumulated from 2007 to 2016. Employers, including municipalities, are required to submit a Return of Earnings form on an annual basis in line with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, No 130 of 1993 (COIDA). The Act provides for compensation for disablement caused by occupational injuries or diseases sustained or contracted by employees in the course of their employment, or for death resulting from such injuries or diseases. “The municipal administration is already in discussion with the Department to arrange for payment of the outstanding amount. “Our first priority is to ensure that staff are covered, as we are not prepared to gamble with the lives of our employees or the money of our ratepayers.” The Mayor said an investigation was underway to determine why the municipal administration had failed to disclose the outstanding monies to the new Council following last year’s elections. Corrective measures will also be put in place so as to prevent a recurrence

Corona and Parley for the Oceans are working together to apply this thinking to the event and are developing several initiatives to reduce the plastic footprint of the Corona Open JBay event, educate surfers and audiences about the need to develop more responsible behaviours when it comes to singleuse plastic, and raise global awareness of this issue. KOUGA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 13 JULY 2017

World’s best surfers arrive for Corona Open JBay THE world’s best surfers arrived in Jeffreys Bay for Stop No. 6 on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) - the Corona Open J-Bay. The event window opened yesterday and runs until July 23 and will resume this season’s thrilling title race, with the top five athletes on the Jeep Leaderboard separated by just 600 points. Current No. 1 on the Jeep Leaderboard Matt Wilkinson (AUS) returns to South Africa this year wearing the Jeep Leader Jersey at this event for the second season running after his recent win at Stop No. 5 in Fiji. The Australian will need a strong result at Jeffreys Bay to retain the yellow jersey with four surfers close behind him on the rankings. Wilkinson will match up against Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Ethan Ewing (AUS) in Round 1. “Coming into the last event the Jeep Leader Jersey didn’t even seem like an option so to come out of Fiji back in the yellow jersey is great,” Wilkinson said at the press session on Tuesday. “At this stage last year I had a pretty solid lead for the first time in my career, which really came out of the blue. Now I feel like it’s different and there are four guys right behind me by only a few hundred points. I’m really excited to be back in this position and hopefully this year I don’t fall off so many times out here and I can win a few heats. “Last year I came here in a strange situation and it was a bit scary,” continued Wilkinson. “Now I know that unless I keep attacking for the rest of the year I’m not going to keep this position. I’m more aware of what it’s going to take and I’m definitely excited. It’s about time I step it up and win this for the goofy-footers. When it was big and pumping out here in 2014 it felt like the best back-hand surfing I’ve ever done. The forecast is looking really good so hopefully I can do it again.” Reigning WSL Champion John John Flor-

The world’s best surfers are set to compete at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay for the Corona Open JBay. Jordy Smith (second left), a twotime event winner (2010 and 2011), is a perennial threat at Jeffreys Bay. He willl be joined by local surfer Dale Staples. Attending the official opening of the Corono Open JBay are Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen (left) and Tourism & Creative Industries Councillor Frances Bacter. PHOTOS:MONIQUE BASSON ence (HAW) sits just 250 points behind Wilkinson and the 2016 event finalist will meet Ian Gouveia (BRA) and Dale Staples (ZAF) in Round 1. “JBay was a great event for me last year and surfing in that final with Mick (Fanning) was incredible,” Florence said. “I’m excited to get some waves this year and hope we get some firing barrels. My goal is to win another world title for sure but you never know what happens and there’s still a lot of events to go. I learnt a lot last year and I’m going to keep working hard and keep learning.” Three-time WSL Champion and four-time event winner Mick Fanning (AUS) is yet to make it beyond the Quarterfinals this season and sits outside the Top 10 in 13th place com-

ing into the event. The defending event winner is one of the most dominant surfers at Jeffreys Bay and in need of a strong result to move up the rankings. Fanning will take on Sebastian Zietz (HAW) and Joan Duru (FRA) in Round 1 of competition. “I really feel at home here and so comfortable and relaxed,” said Fanning. “The people are so nice and the wave is amazing. When you come to a wave you love then the excitement levels really goes up and I feel much more motivated. I get up early in the dark each morning to check the surf and I can’t wait for things to get underway. This is a place that I really look forward to each year.” Two-time event winner Jordy Smith (ZAF) is currently tied in third place on the Jeep Leaderboard. Fresh from victory at the Ballito Pro Qualifying Series 10,000 event, Smith looks in fine form and will battle Conner Coffin (USA) and Michael February (ZAF) in Round 1. “This is by far one of my favourite places in the world and I love coming here each year,” said Smith. “I don’t feel much pressure surfing in front of my home crown because I’ve surfed here my whole life. The year for me has been great so far but it’s such a tight world title race. I’m extremely thankful and excited to be in the position I’m in now and I don’t think I’ve been this excited since I qualified for the tour. My year starts now and I

know I’ve got to put my head down and give it everything.” 2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) sits in equal third place on the Jeep Leaderboard. With a win at Supertubes in 2012 when the event was on the Qualifying Series and a string of Quarterfinal finishes, the Brazilian is keen to improve upon his past results. De Souza will surf against Frederico Morais (PRT) and Jadson Andre (BRA) in Round 1. “I definitely feel better now than in 2015 when I was carrying the yellow jersey for six events and felt a lot of pressure,” said De Souza. “I’m feeling great and very blessed to be back here. I’ve been here for two weeks so I’ve had some time to work on my surfing and get some time before everyone else got here. I want so badly to win this contest - I’m excited and want to do well. I’m trying not to bring pressure to the ocean. 2012 was such a special year and those memories are some that I’ll keep forever and this year I hope we have waves like that again. We have a different story and a different scenario this year and I can see everyone really fighting for the world title here in Jeffreys Bay this year.” Local surfer Dale Staples (ZAF) will join the WSL Top 34 as a wildcard after winning the 2017 edition of the JBU Supertrials and takes on Florence and 2017 WSL Rookie Ian Gouveia (BRA) in the opening Round of competition. “Surfing JBay with just a couple of guys is just incredible and I can’t wait,” said Staples. “When I first competed here I was new on the QS but I’ve had had some more time now and I’m more confident and feeling much better about competing this year.” Staples will be joined by fellow South African Michael February (ZAF) who has been awarded the second WSL wildcard after a stellar run of results on the Qualifying Series (QS) this year. February will face Smith and Conner Coffin (USA) in Round 1. “I’m really, really happy about the wildcard for J-Bay,” said February. “Reaching the Semis at Ballito was such a cool achievement and then when Travis Logie (WSL Deputy Commissioner) told me about the wildcard I was really stoked. “I was given an injury replacement spot at J-Bay in 2015, but that was a last minute decision so this time I have a little more time to prepare for it,” continued February. “The forecasts look like the event will start a couple of days into the window period and after this last result I’m feeling comfortable and couldn’t be better prepared for going into a CT event.”

Round 1 MatchUps ) Heat 1: Joel Parkinson (AUS), Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), Miguel Pupo (BRA) ) Heat 2: Owen Wright (AUS), Bede Durbidge (AUS), Josh Kerr (AUS) ) Heat 3: Adriano de Souza (BRA), Frederico Morais (PRT), Jadson Andre (BRA) ) Heat 4: Matt Wilkinson (AUS), Jeremy Flores (FRA), Ethan Ewing (AUS) ) Heat 5: Jordy Smith (ZAF), Conner Coffin (USA), Michael February (ZAF) ) Heat 6: John John Florence (HAW), Ian Gouveia (BRA), Dale Staples (ZAF)

FACE ADRENALIN: BLOUKRANS BUNGEE

Throw yourself off a bridge MONIQUE BASSON AND another item checked from my bucket list. When the opportunity to bungee jump at Bloukrans - the world’s highest commercial bungee bridge - came up, I did not hesitate for a moment and said ‘Yes, I do’. I don’t think I even said it so quickly at my wedding. Arriving at the Bloukrans Bridge at the border between die Eastern Cape and the Western Cape in the Tsitsikamma, my weight and jump number are written in bold black numbers on my hand (most definitely the most traumatic part of the whole experience), before qualified operators strapped my harness on. Then it is time for the big walk along the specially designed catwalk suspended beneath the road surface. it leads to the launch site at the top of the arch that stands at an enormous 216m. The walk alone can be absolutely terrifying for some. Bungee! “Next jumper!” shouts one of the operators. It’s me. The closer I get to the end of the platform, the more nervous I become. What a strange feeling: on one hand I am very excited and on the other so reluctant. The music is going and I am asked to sit on a stool where they put my ankle straps on, tighten the padding and attach the back-up harness around my shoulders and waist. Bloukrans Bungee uses pendulum bungee technology to ensure the smoothest, most comfortable bungee jump possible. Jumpers are secured in a full-body harness combined with an ankle connection. They are working with deliberate speed, running through each safety check. For them, it is just another jumper, but their voices are gentle and reassuring. “Do you ever push people over the ledge?”, I first asked nervously. Upon which Jump Master Conden Cunningham laughingly replies, “We help wherever we can.” I waddle towards the ledge. Then I get in position . . . I can feel the butterflies in my stomach going crazy, my legs getting numb and my heart beating at a hundred kilometers an hour. Standing on the platform I look at my strapped together ankles, worried that I would jump too early. The operator tells me to look up at the camera and smile. Smile? Me? Are you crazy? But I look up and try to look brave - without succeeding. Will my husband remember to feed the dogs if anything goes wrong? The countdown begins . . . 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . Jump! The view was astonishing, but just before I jumped I thought, “What am I doing throwing myself off a perfectly good bridge?” But I was caught up in the moment, and simply spread my arms and fell forwards - plunging 216m into the gorge below. Head down, feet

The countdown begins . . . 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . Jump! Caught up in the moment, I spread my arms and fell forwards plunging 216m into the gorge below. Head down, feet up. PHOTOS:SUPPLIED up. Everything sped by in a blue-green blur. You see the ground below. It is coming at you and it is coming fast. Blood rushes to your head. I thought I am not going to make it. My heart stopped beating, all the air left my lungs and it felt as if my toenails were peeling off in protest - that is until I realised that I forgot to breathe. Then I felt the bungee pulling at my feet. It is a gentle pull that slows you as you speed towards the ground. Then it is quiet, so peaceful and not so fast. You keep elasticizing up and down for a while. I look down. I look up. I look all around and yell out, “Whoo hoo - I did it.” Before you know it, you hear the voice of one of the operators. Ready to help you back up to the bridge. For the ride back up to the platform with one of the operators, you sit upright. The rush was amazing - a feeling of complete, adrenaline-induced euphoria. Absolutely awesome. I felt liberated. I felt freed from all my daily problems, my fears and my stress. I would highly recommend it to anyone else. You get such a rush of pride and accomplishment. And a certificate for future bragging rights. . The operators on the day were Conden Cunningham (Jump Master), Ronwin Munnik (Supervisor), Juhandré Primo (Supervisor), Elvis Jacobs (Supervisor) and Athenkosi Maputi (photos operator). Sitting on a stool close to the edge, the operator put my ankle straps on, tightened the padding and attached the backup harness around my shoulders and waist.

The Bloukrans Bungee One, two, bungee! When you’re about to leap off the Bloukrans Bridge, you’re about to safely plunge 216m into the gorge below. As far as adrenalin rushes go, you don’t get much better than this. And the beautiful surrounds don’t hurt either. The Bloukrans Bridge, at 216m, is the highest commercial bridge bungee jump in the world and attracts adventure seekers from all over the globe. It’s found along the scenic Garden Route offering one of the most spectacular bungee jumps in South Africa, if not the world. This slick, professional bungee operation is run by Face Adrenalin, a member of the Southern Africa Tourism Association. These specialists in South African bungee jumping put safety first with all equipment conforming to international standards and highly trained and experienced staff ensuring that you enjoy the jump of a lifetime. Another adrenalin option is a tour of the Bloukrans Bridge, the largest single span concrete arch bridge in the world. The tour takes you along a specially-designed catwalk to the top of the arch where you look out over the gorge to the mountains and the sea in the distance. Mayoral send-off for young sport stars YOUNG sport stars from Kouga recently received a special send-off from Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen ahead of them taking part in provincial and national sports tournaments during July. The Mayor hosted the rugby, soccer and netball players, together with the Kouga Sports Council, at her office in Jeffreys Bay. “We are very proud of you. Every town or region needs its own icons, people who do great things and who inspire others to do well. You are already doing it at your age,” she says. Present at the send-off function were Gregan Glover, Jayren Draghoender and Armand Kemp (all 17 years old), who were selected for the Eastern Province team to take part

in the Craven Week tournament at St Stithians College in Johannesburg. Adnethia Scheepers (14), Yondre Jansen (16) and Jami-Leigh Goeda (16), who represented the province at the South African Schools Netball Championships in Boksburg, were also present. Set to put Kouga’s soccer skills on show at the Provincial Soccer Championships to be held at Addo, were Sarah Baartman District team members Zixolise Mahodi (16), Siphosethu Booysen (19), Luvolwethu Ndaku (19), Dennis Peterson (19), Mihlali Msizi (19) and Zandre Williams (20). Van Lingen says she is confident the athletes will do well as Kouga is abundantly blessed with talent.

Vir inligting, skakel Don Thompson by 072 404 3655. JBAY WINTERFEST: COLD WATER SWIM CLASSIC

Sisters have eyes set on records

MONIQUE BASSON ICY water, burning skin, poor visibility, possible hypothermia, giant sharks, and powerful currents are some of the hazards two local open water swimmers could face when they attempt to set up three records. Sisters Abriella (10) and Issataya (8) Bredell have their eyes, or rather swimming goggles, set on two icy titles and a Robben Island first. Donning their winter woollies and wetsuits, the two sisters will respectively take part in the Triple Mile and Mile event at the Cold Water Swim Classic on July 16 to become the youngest swimmers to splash over the frigid finish line. Helping them train for the event, is swim coach and experienced open water swimmer, Brenton Williams. Not stopping there, for Abriella successfully completing the Triple Mile event in the gelid water of Marina Martinique is the first stepping stone on her journey to qualify for the notorious Robben Island Crossing. She hopes to become the youngest swimmer to swim from Robben Island to Blouberg - a distance of 7.6km in icy water with nefarious currents and abundant wildlife. Not only does she hope to set a new record, but she is also doing the swim to raise funds for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. “If I were in their shoes, I would wish that someone help raise funds for me,” says Abriella. For more information or to make a donation towards this worthy cause, visit her website at www.abriellabredell.co.za. Her mentor, Williams, will be at her side every stroke of the way. Training for what others may consider torture, takes a considerable amount of convincing at times. Not because she does not enjoy it - in fact, she lives for the challenge of beating the chill - but getting into the water is the main challenge. “The cold burns. It literally feels like your skin is on fire. Once in the water, you must immediately start to swim in order to maintain your core temperature,” says Abriella who got hooked on cold water swimming last year. “An unwavering mindset to succeed is vital. The mental preparation is all about trying

Abriella Bredell (10) is set to compete in the Triple Mile event at the Cold Water Swim Classic at Marina Martinique this Saturday, as part of her journey to become the youngest swimmer to swim from Robben Island to Blouberg. PHOTOS:MONIQUE BASSON to convince yourself that you can do this. “I would recommend cold water swimming to swimmers who want to put their ability and endurance to the ultimate test.” In preparation for the Robben Island Crossing, Abriella takes to the open water three times a week with Williams at Marina Martinique, while she also works in three sessions of pool swimming a week with Maria Holmes from Liquid Lines in Cape St Francis. Abriella’s swimming accomplishments include the Langebaan Lagoon Swim, the inaugural Pier to Pub Swim, the Lighthouse Swim, swimming around Cape Point, the Cold Water Swim Classic, the Oceana Swim, the Ocean

Racing Series, swimming from Seal Point to Port St Francis and the Smile Mile. Younger sister Issataya is set to follow in her sister’s slip stream. She hopes to become the youngest swimmer to finish the Mile event at the Cold Water Swim Classic. And who knows, the Robben Island Crossing might be next on her bucket list. According to Issataya, she used to paddle alongside Abriella while training. “I would never have dreamt that I would exchange my paddles for goggles and a swimming cap.” Next on the family tree to embrace the cold are their younger sister and baby brother.

Cold Water Swim Classic The fifth annual Cold Water Swim Classic, will see top South African and local open water swimmers take to the water at Marina Martinique at 09:30 on July 16. Presented by Nicholas Melck, the swim has become one of the core events on the JBay Winterfest calendar. With water temperatures ranging from 11 degrees Celsius to a warm 14 degrees Celsius, this extreme event is the only recognised cold water swim in the Eastern Cape. Swimmers competing in the Mile or Double Mile event, can either wear a wetsuit or compete according to channel rules and wear only a speedo type costume, goggles and a swim cap. Those competing in the Triple Mile event, which is an official qualifying swim for the notorious Robben Island Crossing, are only allowed to wear a speedo. For more information, visit www.zports.co.za/coldwaterclassic.

Issataya Bredell (8) has her eyes set on becoming the youngest swimmer to complete the Mile event at the Cold Water Swim Classic.

Paint the sky with BRIGHT pink bears, big-pawed frogs, friendly whales and big-eyed octopuses are set to colour the sky at Lower Point heading towards Kabeljous on July 21 and 22. Kite expert Peter Binsberger will twirl his magic with quad line revolution kites,

showing off his stunt flying. He will be joined by Stinky the dinosaur, Pigasus the pig and various dragons. There will also be giant inflatables, flow forms, trains, facet kites, traditional Asian kites and line fillers.

Experts will be on site to offer advice to novice kiters and help them fly smaller kites and bolls. There will be “Sweety Drops”. Do not miss out on all the fun at Lower Point.

My Name is Heidi from Eastern Cape. I have been suf-fering financially for many years, I have worked as a domestic worker, earning a very minimal salary. I used to consult many traditional healers to assist in changing my life financially. I gave them all the money to finish un-finished jobs because of that I couldn’t explain to my kids where my money was going. My eldest daughter even moved out of the house because of our situation at that time. I came across a testimony from sister Jenini from Despatch, testifying about Prof. Sally that had helped her by using Magic Rats to put money in her house on the same day. I phoned sister Jenini she explai-ned to me how her life used to be, she gave me Prof Sally’s number and I contacted her, she explained to me all the options and I chose Magic Rats to put money into my shack. I was shocked when I saw the money. I contacted her and she said it was ok for me to use the money. I paid her 25% from the money I recei-ved. Now my life is debt free, my kids are back at school and I bought a new house for my family. Prof Sally can also help with Shortboys, Magic Ring for gambling, Magic Stick for money and gals, and she also finishes unfinished jobs.

Die LS as

FOTO’S: VERSKAF

Big names gear up for JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic LOCAL favourites and defending champions are set to pedal to the bitter end for the coveted JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic title on July 22.

The women’s field is shaping up to be another big battle with the entire 2016 85km podium in the hunt for the top step. Defending champion, Yolande de Villiers, three-time winner, Anriëtte Schoeman and SanMarie Woithe all confirmed their participation. The event - which forms part of the JBay Winterfest - will showcase some of the finest trails in the area and offers R50 000 worth of prizes - with a R10 000 first prize for both the male and female 85km ultra category winners. While the 85km Ultra route is the mainstay of the event, there are also 50km and 25km routes, making it rides that should appeal to all levels of riders. This year’s Ultra will run on an entirely redesigned route. Enter online at jbaymtbclassic.co.za. Online registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, July 19. Late registrations will be accepted on Friday, July 21 at CycloPro in Port Elizabeth and on the day of the event at the Kabeljouws Lagoon Parking Area in Jeffreys Bay.

The event runs from the Kabeljouws parking lot and will offer something for all mountainbike skill and fitness levels, featuring a 25km fun ride, 50km half-marathon and 85km ultra. The race carries the unique distinction of being the only one-day race in Africa to traverse a wind farm. To battle it out on the 85km route is defending champion and RMB Change a Life rider, Ndumiso ‘Maza’ Dontso, who will be joined by teammate Luvuyo ‘Thando’ Siyasi who finished in the top 5 in 2016. However, Grahamstown-based Jason Meaton, who finished second in 2016, and Jason Reed from East London are bound to be a threat. Another name to watch is Stellenboschbased Max Sullivan. Whether on the road or dirt, the Maties paceman is always in the mix at the sharp-end.
