Hankey awarded best station MONIQUE BASSON

T is official – the Kouga region is home to the best police station and the best police cluster in the province. For the fourth year running the Hankey Police Station was named the Best Station in the Province in the Medium Station-category, while the Humansdorp Cluster won the Best Cluster Category in the Province. These awards were bestowed on the various police station during the Provincial Annual Service Excellence Awards ceremony held in East London. These awards acknowledge the work of officers who went above and beyond the call of duty to serve their community and prevent crime in the preceding year. According to Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier Neil Jantjies, these achievements are earned through dedication, teamwork, discipline and proper planning. “Problem crime areas were identified and pro-active steps were imme-

diately implemented to curb further escalation of crimes,” said Jantjies. Steps taken include reaction units that were implemented in St Francis Bay and Jeffreys Bay during the peak holiday season, ensuring visitors and locals a crime-free festive mood. Furthermore, hot spot areas - which included taverns - were identified and patrolled regularly. Contributing to the success of the Hankey Police Station is their adoption of a zero tolerance approach, which paid off as serious crimes decreases significantly when police targeted the petty crimes. “Most of our stations have a good relationship with the Crime Prevention Forums and the communities. This is important, because when we work together we can definitely make a difference in the communities we serve,” said Jantjies. A proud lt. col. Ezrah Sefaley, who has been at the head of the Hankey Police Station since 2009, attributes his success through leading from the front and getting involved and understanding the needs of his community.

Man in hof ná hy glo sy vrou voor huis skiet RIAAN MARAIS

&

ILSE KRIGE

“Daar was nie argumente of stryery of snaakse vibes nie.

Stasiebevelvoer lt. col. IT was so hittete of Kersvader se jolige liggies het die amptelike hys van die gesogte Blouvlag by Dolfynstrand in die wiele gery.

K kry skoon hoendervleis as ek dink dat more my laaste dag is.

Dít is waarvoor ek gebore is.”

Top music acts for ‘Friendly’ Arts Festival

HE inaugural Ebubeleni Arts Festival scheduled for December 29 in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, boasts a strong and exciting line-up of national and local artists, with the aim of making this an annual event.

Ebubeleni means “friendly” and is a reference to PE being known as the Friendly City. It will be held at the Heatherbank Sports Club in Walmer. Among the national acts are the Parlotones, Stimela, Zonke, Theo

Kgosinkwe, Toya Delazy, AKA and MiCasa; while five local acts and bands will also perform. “We have been carefully planning this event for the past five years and feel the time is right to stage it now. This is because we have the necessary capabilities and capacity to present a very successful event,” said the show’s producer Tembi Mahambehlala. “We felt PE deserves a signature event like this. For a long time PE has been a spectator while other ma-

jor metros in the country host annual events of this nature boosting tourism in those regions. We want this event to contribute to job creation in the region, as we all know how dire the economy is in the country, especially in this region,” said Mahambehlala. According to Mahambehlala, the line-up was deliberately designed to have a crossover look and appeal so as to promote social cohesion while attracting a broader audience. Mahambehlala’s experience in-

cludes working at big Festivals, such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Macufe, Diamonds and Dorings and the Tribute Concert at Moretele in Tshwane. Another coup for the show organisers is Zonke, who despite being one of the top-selling artists in recent times, has not performed in her hometown of PE since she came to fame. It has also been decades since Stimela has set foot in the Bay and members of the group have expressed excitement returning to per-

form in PE after a long absence from these shores. Ebubeleni Arts Festival is a homecoming event with a picnic feel and strives to provide entertainment for the people of Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas.. Gates for the festival open at 1pm and the show starts at 2pm. Tickets are R120 for ordinary tickets and R150 for Golden Circle tickets and are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers. No tickets will be sold at the gates.

MANUEL ESCORCIO TO PERFORM IN JEFFREYS Private Care Ambulance Service will host a Christmas and Gospel Show with Manuel Escorcio at 10am 7.30pm on December 21 at the NG Church Com plex in Jeffreysbay in aid of CNASA. Tickets will be on sale at the door. For tickets or information, phone 0 083 587 7556.

7 in 10 South Africans to overindulge NEARLY all of us (76%) admit to eating more than usual during the festive period and will on average gain 2kg in weight according to a just-released national year-end survey by Pharma Dynamics, a leading provider of heartburn medication in SA. With the seasonal festivities soon being upon us, many will be getting merry on too much wine at the office party, stuffing ourselves with treats and eating our way to the New Year on leftovers, but can our bodies take it? Mariska Fouche, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics says it’s normal to see a spike in heartburn medication sales over the festive period, and emergency rooms equally report an increase in patient visits seeking relief from some form of abdominal discomfort. “After Christmas many suffer from digestive problems caused by too much food and alcohol, with the most common problem tending to be indigestion or reflux brought on by eating too much sugary and fatty foods,” says Fouche. The Pharma Dynamics poll confirmed that after eating Christmas dinner a staggering 55% of South Africans suffer from indigestion, 49% experience heartburn and 42% of us are burdened with flatulence. Nearly a third also admitted to rushing their food in anticipation of the next course. “Indigestion can indeed be caused by eating too quickly. As it takes time for the feeling of satiety to come through most people just keep on eating with no breaks. Not chewing your food thoroughly and the stress of multitasking – often associated with the party season – are

sure tickets to increased stomach acid and heartburn flare-ups. “Overindulgence can lead to very severe inflammation of the stomach lining or in the throat from all the acid that comes up and could even lead to a long-term problem such as ulcers, gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome or a hiatus hernia. “For people who are already prone to heartburn, piling on the weight, particularly around the stomach, can also intensify it, so try to eat and drink in moderation. Fouche has some tips to help people make the most of their holidays while keeping heartburn in check: .Steer clear of foods or drinks that make symptoms worse .Reduce meal portions .Eat slowly and take a break between courses .Alternate alcohol drinks with water .Don’t go to bed or exercise on a full stomach .Opt for salads, lean meats, fish and light sauces whenever possible. “Try to reduce other factors that may aggravate heartburn such as stress, which is very much part and parcel of the holidays and take an over-the-counter antacid or ask your doctor or pharmacist for medication that will reduce the amount of stomach acid that is produced to avoid potential festive health woes,” says Fouche. More than 2 373 South Africans between the ages of 18 and 60 took part in Pharma Dynamics’ national online survey. Source: Lange Strategic Communication

Children an important part of home security TWO of the most common ways unwanted visitors gain access to a property are when children are at home alone - especially over the forthcoming end of year holidays when their parents are at work and of course weekends. With many dual-income households, children commonly spend more time on a property on their own without their parents and yet often they are forgotten when home security planning is concerned. Chubb Fire and Security suggests the following: 1. Remember your children when planning for your home’s security, especially when they are at home alone or during weekend or holiday periods. 2. Many home burglaries or hold-ups occur because children haven’t been told what to do when this happens. 3. Children must never allow unannounced visitors onto the property. 4. Children should be taught how to answer a telephone or gate intercom without betraying the fact that they are alone. 5. Rather than acknowledging that their parents are away from the property, they should say that the required person is not available and ask the caller to leave a message.

Safety tips to prevent crime CHUBB has the following advice to protect you and your family from crime: )Be aware that you could be a victim at any time. )Try not to go out alone late at night. If this is not possible, stay in well-lit, busy areas. )Make sure your perimeter gate is securely closed before leaving home.

)When returning home, be vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. )If you feel you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station )Do not park in dark, unattended areas. )Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings. Source: Chubb Securtiy

Drs. Visser, Erasmus, Vawda and Partners Radiology Practice Thermography vs Mammography We would like to express our dissatisfaction with the recent article on thermography of the breasts which was published in the Kouga Express on October 30, 2012 as supplied by Thermal Health Solutions in Jeffreys Bay. Reference was made to mammography, but numerous inaccurate statements regarding mammography and its scientifically proven role in the screening for breast cancer were made. On June 2, 2011 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States issued a communication to alert the public, including women and health care providers, that thermography is not a replacement for screening mammography and should not be used alone to diagnose breast cancer. The FDA is not aware of any valid scientific data to show that thermographic devices, when used on their own, are an effective screening tool for any medical condition including the early detection of breast cancer or other breast disease. Breast cancer in South Africa is the most common cancer in white women and the second most common cancer in black women. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the United States estimates that about 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in her life. Mammography is still the most effective screening method for detecting breast cancer in its early, most treatable stages. Results from clinical trials and other studies show that screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 70 and is promoted actively for this reason in the United States and the European Union.

6. On no account should a visitor be allowed onto the property unannounced or without their parent’s permission. 7. Your children should never be cajoled into going to the property’s gate to investigate an unannounced visitor. 8. Your children should know the location of your panic buttons, and more importantly, how to use them. If you have decided to invest in remote panic buttons, make sure your children have one at their disposal. 9. An easily accessible list of emergency contact numbers such as you and your spouse’s work and cell phone numbers as well as those of the immediate neighbours, your security company, the South African Police Service and other emergency services, such as the Fire Department, should be left near the home’s main phone. 10. Most children have cell phones – input these numbers into their phones and if they have the facility, show your children how to use the speed dial facility on their phone. 11. It is advisable and indeed necessary to frequently test any fixed or mobile panic buttons, but please advise your Monitoring Centre first. False alarms cost lives and to do this as a means of testing response times could cost a person his life. Source: Chubb Security

The most important factor in survival is the early detection of breast cancer. Screening mammograms do not only detect cancers which present as mass lesions in the breasts, but can also find microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium) that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer. A mammogram can be combined with an ultrasound to further improve the detection of early breast cancer. In high risk patients an MRI scan of the breasts can also be considered for screening purposes. What are The National Cancer Institute' s recommendations for screening mammograms? Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. Women who are at higher than average risk of breast cancer (for example, because of a family history of the disease) should talk to their health care providers about whether to have mammograms before age 40 and how often to have them. Other screening methods (e.g. breast MRI) can also be considered. As for concerns about exposure to radiation from a mammogram, evidence shows that the benefit far outweighs the risk of harm, especially when compared to the danger of breast cancer. Thermography is not a substitute for mammography and thermography should not be used alone to screen for or to diagnose breast cancer. Thermography may be used to supplement information from mammography, but it must be kept in mind that it can' t always detect small cancers, nor cancers situated deep in the breast.

“Springgety beteken hoër as normaal hoogwater en laer as normaal laagwater.

YOUR CONCRETE FUTURE

Local swimmer Brenton Williams took on the challenge last Monday morning in 12 degree water and a bumpy sea to became the first person in the world to swim from 3 Anchor Bay to Robben Island….butterfly. Williams was allowed only to swim in a speedo and wear a swim cap and goggles. Nobody has ever contemplated swimming butterflyfly over the 11.5K channel before and the vast majority of Robben Island crossing are done between the Island and Blouberg beach, a 7.6km stretch of water. Another South African swimmer, Chris Barnard completed the Blouberg crossing swimming butterfly in February 1990 and it’s taken 22 years

for another swimmer to step up and take on the butterfly challenge. Peter Bales, the chairman of the Cape Long Distance Swim Association was at the start of Williams’ swim at 3 Anchor Bay and said that he never thought he would see another butterfly swimmer taking on Robben Island. “Chris Barnard was a phenomenal swimmer and I really never thought I would see somebody else try to fly the Robben Island crossing. Brenton’s swim was an epic,” said Bales. Conditions were not ideal for a butterfly crossing with the water at 12 degrees and a lumpy surface which added to the challenge that faced Williams. “I was in Cape Town for the 5K Shipwreck swim which was held in 11 degree water along the Blouberg coastline on Sunday and Derrick Frazer made the call that there was a window for a Robben Island crossing early Monday morning,” said Williams. “Although conditions were not ideal, I felt that we had to make use of the opportunity and have a shot at the 11.5K crossing. “After I had settled down, I realised it was going to be a hard swim as my shoulders were still stiff from the

Marina Mile takes to the water IT is that time of the year again when locals and holidaymakers alike dust off their swim goggles and take on the challenge of swimming a Mile in the pristine canals of Marina Martinique. The action starts on Saturday morning, December 22 when swimmers will be faced with a double mile through the canals. What makes the Marina Mile so special is the swimmers going past houses and being cheered on by the residents of the Marina who all enter into the spirit of the event. Then the bank-to-bank swim and the 500m swim will take place. Both these events are for novice open water swimmers and there is no entry fee for the bank to bank swim. The action will hot up at 11.30am when the women’s mile

takes to the water. Olympian Jessica Roux could be in the starting line up to defend her title as queen of the Marina Mile. At 12.30pm the men’s mile will start and this is always a fast race in the salt canals of Marina Martinique. Sunday, December 23 will see the big guns in South African open water swimming circles take on the daunting 25K swim, with shorter 10K and 5K events also taking place. All the swims will take place at the old shark aquarium at the Marina. Pre-entries have opened at www.swimmingplus.com There will be a training swim on Friday afternoon at 4.30pm pm and another swim at 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon. Shipwreck swim the previous day where we swam through patches of water that were around 10 degrees. “The last 3 K was really tough and I had to dig deep to keep the rhythm going and the Island just didn’t seem to be getting any closer. When it looked like we were really close to shore we discovered there was a huge kelp bed we had to swim though to reach the Island. It was hard swimming fly through the kelp and it took about 20 minutes to swim the last couple of hundred metres. At the same time getting close to the finish was a really special moment in my life as Robben Island has played a significant role in South Africa’s history and to complete an unprecedented swim was a great feeling. Things seemed to go in slow motion and the sea calmed down close to the shore” said Williams after setting a new world record.” After taking some time to recharge his shoulders and organise the Swimming Plus Marina Mile which is on December 22, Brenton will take a look at breaking the South African record of 15km for the longest open water butterfly swim.
