Multi­million road upgrade underway THE South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is in the process of upgrading the R62 from Kareedouw to the N2 interchange at a cost of R90 milllion.

The project, which commenced in March, will take place over a period of 15 months.

Stop-and-go sections are being implemented:

a 4km road closure will include a maximum of three stop-and-go sections.

“The roadworks comprise special maintenance of the R62 section 8 from Kareedouw to the N2 interchange. The roadworks will span 4km and we request motorists to observe and obey warning signs and reduced speed limits.

Exercise extreme caution when travelling

Kouga’s municipal valuers to be introduced WITH the compilation of Kouga’s new General Valuation Roll set to commence in July 2017, four public meetings have been arranged to explain the process to property owners.

Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the meetings have been set for June.

“Property owners will have the opportunity to meet the new valuers and to interact with them regarding the valuation process to be followed,” she said.

“The new General Valuation Roll will determine how much property owners will be expected to pay for rates and taxes from the 2018/2019 financial year. We would, therefore, like to encourage them to attend the meetings as the outcomes of the process will affect everyone.”

Van Lingen said the new roll would be finalised and advertised for objections by 31 January 2018.

The public meetings will start at 18:30 and have been scheduled as follows: ) On Monday, 12 June, the first meeting will be held at the Newton Hall in Jeffreys Bay. The meeting will focus on the Jeffreys Bay area, including, Aston Bay, Marina

Martinique, Pellsrus, Mandela Bay, Tokyo Sexwale, Ocean View and Paradise Beach. ) The second meeting will be held at the Katrien Felix Hall at Thornhill on Tuesday, 13 June. The focus will be on Thornhill, Loerie, Hankey, Patensie, Gamtoos, Crossways, farms in the Hankey and Patensie areas, as well as those Uitenhage farms that fall under Kouga’s jurisdiction. ) On Wednesday, 14 June, a meeting will be held at the Humansdorp Country Club for Humansdorp town and surrounds, including, Kruisfontein, KwaNomzamo, Vergenoeg, Vaaldam and farms in the Humansdorp area. ) The fourth and final meeting will take place on Thursday, 15 June, at the Sea Vista Community Hall. The focus areas will be St Francis Bay, the St Francis Links, Kromme River, Sea Vista, Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay. DDP Valuers has been contracted to conduct the valuations for the new roll. The maintenance includes the existing

road, which leads to Kareedouw. This road was declared a national road in 2012 and a special maintenance project has been identified to improve quality and safety, and also preserve the road assert.

“The community is benefitting from this project through the improvement of road safety, street lighting and pedestrian facilities.”

Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen says the municipality wishes to apologise for the delay in both the emailing and posting of accounts.

“The delay was caused by technical difficulties beyond our control and compounded by the many public holidays during the month of April,” she says.

“As the accounts were sent out later than usual, the municipality will only be charging interest on outstanding amounts for this period from June 1.”

The Mayor says residents are encouraged to register for the municipality’s online service so as to receive their accounts via email or to view their accounts online through the “Ratepayers Info System” on the municipal website.

“The online service was introduced to enhance support to residents and ratepayers.

Once registered, residents can access their municipal account no matter where they are, as long as they have access to email or our website,” she explains.

recognised as one of the main stepping-stones towards selection for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 - Smit’s ultimate goal.

Smit, who has had a passion for running since a very young age, only started competing in disabled athletics from 2013.

Prior to that, he competed against ablebodied athletes.

From 2014 to 2016 he won a total of nine medals: four gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.

But winning medals takes hard work and dedication.

He trains three times a week at the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport, and does track training three days of the week. “However, training is much more than just going to the gym or track. It is a lifestyle. I must do daily core work, watch my diet and ensure that I get enough rest - all in all, achieve the perfect balance.”

In addition to being a professional athlete, Smit does voluntary work for Retina South Africa. He is also actively involved with his church and plays the guitar.

Add to that 200 metres, 400 metres, T12 and N2. And you get a whole lot of numbers, but, most importantly, a drive that surpasses all obstacles.

Jaco Smit (29) spends most of his time driving up and down between Humansdorp and Port Elizabeth on his mission to win gold in the 200m and 400m events at the 2017 IPC Athletics World Championships to be held in London in July, this year.

This follows after Smit, who trains with coach Gerrie Posthumus at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, bagged three medals at the recent Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled in Port Elizabeth.

He won a gold medal in the T12 (partially-sighted) 400m event, and a silver medal in the T12 200m event - securing a World Qualifying Standard Time for both events with a time of 0:51:40 and 0:22:91 respectively. With a distance of 5:90m, he secured a silver medal in the T12 long jump event.

“Competing against last year’s winners, these medals came as a triumphant victory,” says Smit.

“It proved to me that I am good enough to compete with the rest of the world.”

Talhado receives 67 blankets

Thanks and gratitude were abundant at Talhado Montessori School when all the children received a beautiful hand­knitted warm blanket courtesy of a small group of ladies in East London who call themselves the Nanny Knitters. The project is the brain child of Jean Hempel whose daughter­in­law, Cathryn Hempel, is the school’s headmistress. The Knitters took up the project for their 67 minutes of community service for Mandela Day. The 67 minutes turned into 67 blankets for the children of the school.

Enjoying their new blankets are Anold Sibanga, Ntuthuko Sibanga and Aluncedo Vephu. With them are mums Khanyisa Sibanga and Lindelwa Sibanga.

Volgens Trumie is die Wimpy een van die oudste besighede in Jeffreysbaai wat tot onlangs toe nog sake gedoen het. Ander bestaande besighede van ouds sluit in Jeffreysbaai Motors, Savoy Hotel, Plumbago, Country Feeling, In Step, Vanilla Dream en Trawlers.

Kouga geared for biggest adventure race SEVEN days, 500km, epic challenges, tough routes, raw adventure . . . reward your soul and awaken your passion.

The final countdown to Africa’s biggest adventure race, Expedition Africa - Baviaans, has begun. Some 39 teams from 13 countries will be taking part in the gruelling 500km adventure race, set to take place in the Kouga and Baviaans areas of the Eastern Cape from 12 to 21 May 2017.

The event will be hosted by the Kouga Local Tourism Organisation and the host venue will be the Cape St Francis Resort.

The organisers, Stephan and Heidi Muller, have kept the start of Expedition Africa a secret. Media, supporters and athletes will only receive communication regarding the route, disciplines and transitions incorporated in this year’s race at the opening ceremony, which will take place at Cape St Francis Resort at 14:00 on Friday, May 12. The race will officially kick off on Sunday morning at 07:00.

Families, friends and supporters alike will be able to cheer on their teams via a live track-

ing feed which will feature a leader board, all transition areas and checkpoints along the route. The live tracking feed can be accessed at www.expafrica.live.

Local supporters will have the opportunity to meet these amazing athletes at designated transition areas, all visible on the live tracking event page.

This year’s Expedition Africa race will not only be a physical struggle but a mental one.

Teams have a rugged adventure race to look forward to, as they are expected to race through a carefully designed course, incorporating all the challenging, yet beautiful attractions the glorious Baviaans and Kouga regions have to offer.

“Teams will trek, kayak and cycle through extremely remote areas, venturing where few humans have set foot before. Expedition Africa 2017’s teams will explore both magnificent mountain ranges and the beautiful coastlines of the Eastern Cape,” says Muller.

May 12 - the introduction of the 39 teams from 13 countries. ) Witness the flag parade at Seal Point Lighthouse at 10:30 on May 13. Teams will march from the Cape St Francis Resort to the Seal Point Lighthouse carrying their official country flags. A small “monument” will be built to commemorate the event. All are welcome. ) 07:00 on Sunday, May 14 (venue to be announced on Friday). Follow the first few kilometres of the race through the greater St Francis. ) Cape St Francis Resort on Wednesday, May 17 - the first teams should start arriving back at the Cape St Francis Resort. They will need all the support they can get.

What is Expedition Africa? ) A 500km non-stop (no sleep) race where teams navigate themselves from control point to control point. ) They only receive a map and compass, and that is it. The route is not marked, and is kept secret until race day. ) Teams are 4-members strong, of which one must be female.

) They trek (hike), cycle and kayak. Mountaineering can be included. ) The route includes the greater St Francis area, Jeffreys, the entire Gamtoos Valley, a portion of the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, and Tsitsikamma.

Why is it important to the region? ) The event gives residents the chance to showcase the area as the best holiday destination to nature and sports lovers. Each team gets a tracking device, so their families, supporters, sponsors, ex-racers and likeminded sports people can follow this race live on www.kougatourism.com. Last year 80 000+ people followed the race every day.

What must you do? ) Become a dotwatcher - follow these teams and if you see a team is close to you – jump off your chair and go support them. Professional teams are not allowed any food/drinks, but a cheer is always welcome. ) Go to the Transition Areas and give the teams the moral support they need.

Project collects 500 tons of ‘rubbish’

Since the first bag of ‘rubbish’ was weighed in at the JBay Recycling Project in Pellsrus, Jeffreys Bay in January 2011, a whopping 500 tons of recyclables have been collected to date. To celebrate this landmark occasion, some trees were planted at the recycling site on Monday.

Kouga Mayor, Elza van Lingen, and DA Chief Whip, Danny Benson, lent a helping hand, while Tanya Lategan from the JBay Recycling Project kept a watchful eye. The JBay Recycling Project is a non­profit organisa­ tion and sees an average of 300 children bringing in around 3.8 tonnes of recyclables per trading Monday.

Four more invitees announced JBU Supertrial defending champion Steve Sawyer from Jeffreys Bay is set to take to the waves during the JBU Supertrial - the only contest in the country that offers surfers a stake into a World Championship Tour competition.

This goofy-footer recently won the Buffalo City Surf Pro in East London, proving his versatility. Coming into the JBU Supertrial event as a defending champion, he will be determined for another big result this year.

He will be joined by yet another Jeffreys Bay local and goofy-footed surfer, Joshe Faulkner. Growing up surfing Supertubes makes Faulkner a shoo-in as an invitee, and he has a solid and exciting backhand approach to surfing Supertubes. He is strong in the tube and could easily cause an upset at

this event.

Matt Bromley from Cape Town is another surfer who will be out to impress. A gifted big wave surfer and all-round charger, Bromley is a tenacious competitor and can often be found up in Jeffreys Bay practising his barrel riding at Supertubes.

Powerful natural-footer Davey van Zyl, who excels in the beach break barrels of Durban, is set to deliver a virtuoso performance at Supertubes. He is confident when the surf starts getting big.

These four surfers will join Mikey February, Matt McGillivray, Beyrick de Vries and Dylan Lightfoot who have already been invited to compete in the event.

The JBU Supertrial presented by Monster Energy is an exclusive invite-only tournament, with first prize being the coveted Wild-

JBay Loggers Classic to surf into town THE inaugural JBay Loggers Classic 2017, presented by Vodacom 4U, is set to take the town by storm at Lower Point, Jeffreys Bay, from July 21 to 22.

This unique surf-lifestyle event - a stylish addition to the JBay Winterfest lineup - is hosted by the single fin slinging crew of Loggers Union.

The weekend promises to provide perfectly peeling point waves, an incredible beach vibe, a wholesome food market and performances by some of SA’s best musical talent each afternoon.

Experience the true soul of surfing, while international and local single fin sliders take to the clean walls of Lower Point.

The competition commences at lunch time on Friday and finishes off with a prize-giving event and live music

on Saturday evening at Lower Point.

Divisions for the event include Men’s Pro, Men’s Amateur and Women’s Open.

Sunday morning will see an exhibition of retro-surfing as Loggers Union hosts an inter-club surf-off between single fin surf clubs from around the country for the first time ever.

King of the Kromme crowned GREG Louw, also known as the Bay Bullet, is the new King of the Kromme for 2017.

With a time of 1 hour 44 minutes and 23 seconds, he crossed the finish line first at the annual Pam Golding King of the Kromme held at St Francis Bay. Securing 12 months of bragging rights for the second time in a row, he also received R1 500 and a trophy.

According to race organiser, Richard Arderne from Pam Golding in St Francis Bay, this is the first time in 11 years that they have had a two-time winner.

Local up-and-coming paddler Phil Smith took the second place (01:48:33), narrowly beating East London’s super-fit veteran Hennie Roos (01:48:49).

Another local, 14-year-old Graydon Mitchley, was the first junior to cross the finish line - coming in at 5th place.

In the 12km race, Grant Pollock came first in a time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 7 seconds, while Richard Arderne (01:09:43) and Byron Andrews (01:13:25) secured the second and third spots with their paddling skills.
