Algoa Nissan honoured at annual dealer conference D URING the weekend of February 21 and 22, Algoa Nissan attended the 2013 Nissan South Africa

Dealer Annual Conference in Sun City.

Here, two members of their after-sales team were awarded accolades for their skills in outstanding service delivery and technical performance.

Simoné Du Plessis received an honorary accolade as the top Nissan Service Advisor for 2012 nationally and Charles Boshoff was awarded as the runner up in the best Nissan Technical Service category nationally.

Out of 119 attending dealers, Algoa Nissan not only came out on top, but they were also the only dealer at the 2013 Dealer Annual Conference to have two finalists in the 2012 National Nissan After-sales Awards.

The Humansdorp Cluster recently won the Best Cluster Category in the Province. This award was bestowed on the cluster during the Provincial Annual Service Excellence Awards ceremony. Hundreds of houses to be erected in Kruisfontein MONIQUE BASSON

HE long wait for hundreds of people from Kruisfontein will soon be something of the past with the construction of nearly 400 RDP houses.

The Department of Environmental Affairs has given the green light for the construction of 391 RDP houses at the northern side of the Vaaldam in Kruisfontein.

According to municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, the municipality initially applied for 2 500 units to be erected, but only a small portion of these has been approved.

“We have now covered all the pre-planning processes and have submitted an application to the Human Settlement’s MEC’s office for reservation of funds to the tune of R34 084 435.

The application was submitted last year for the 2013/2014 budget, and we are waiting for the response from the DoHS before we can say when we are likely to proceed to the next phase of construction,” said Sobele.

“In the meantime, we are looking at options to increase the capacity of our Waste Water Treatment Works in the area to accommodate the remainder of the units in the initial plan

as the demand for houses has not decreased.”

Other projects that received the go-ahead, but face similar budgetary processes to Kruisfontein, are the construction of 220 houses in Pellsrus and 1 500 in Ocean View.

These projects form part of the development of 8 613 units, divided into ten projects covering Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St Francis Bay, Patensie, Hankey and Thornhill.

According to DA Ward 4 councillor, Freddy Campher, an extensive number of Kruisfontein residents are in dire need of proper housing. “Some relief for a small number of these residents are the 30 emergency houses that were erected at the end of last year,” said Campher.

“The emergency houses are made available to residents who have no other place to stay and are on the waiting list for an RDP house.

“We received a list of 120 residents in need of accommodation, and initially applied for 100 houses. However, we only received 30 houses from Human Settlement in conjunction with the Housing Department of the municipality. These houses are not nearly enough to accommodate 120 residents. The need for housing is great, and we will once again apply for more emergency houses.”

Soria Swart van Wild Pebbles, in samewerking met die Dorp van Drome, skop op Saterdag, 9 Maart hul unieke Mosaïek Straatsypaadjie-projek af. Eerste op die lys is die sypaadjie in Da Gamaweg regoor die Kouga-munisipaliteit.

Volgens Swart is dit vir haar van kardinale belang dat die dorp mooi lyk, en

daarom werp sy nou haar volle gewig agter die projek wat Jeffreysbaai in ’n lushof gaan omskep.

“Ons almal wat betrokke is, sien baie uit na die begin van die projek. Ek dink dit gaan ’n eerste vir Suid-Afrika wees. Self het ek dit al baie in Europa gesien, maar nog nooit in ons land nie,” vertel Soria.

“Wanneer nog meer sypaadjies in Jeffreysbaai met dié nuwe teël-baadjie spog, gaan dit ’n positiewe verskil aan die beeld en identiteit van die dorp maak.”

Work on causeway delayed MONIQUE BASSON WORK on the causeway to Paradise Beach, which was set to commence on February 5, has been delayed due to environmental processes that must be followed.

It is still unknown when work on the bridge will commence.

According to municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, residents will be notified when the causeway is to be closed for traffic.

Once the causeway is closed, motorists

will have to make use of the gravel road that connects Paradise Beach to the R102 between Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay. The municipality will be grading the road to accommodate the increase in traffic.

Kouga Municipal Manager Sidney Fadi said torrential rains and flooding during 2012 had caused significant structural damage to the causeway that connects Paradise Beach to Aston Bay and Jeffreys Bay. The municipality applied for disaster management grant funding to repair the causeway and was awarded just more than R2 million.

Residents expressing their grievances THANK you for the opportunity to express ourselves. Here follows a list of grievances compiled by various residents.

1. Our roads are in a shocking state of repair; visitors cannot believe the bad condition. A lot of money is wasted with patching here and there and having to return to patch instead of doing a good job from the start.

2. Our sewage needs to be seen to.

3. Our water pipes all too often burst and need to be seen to.

4. It is highly illegal to have 6 speed humps in a row in a 200m section, the Tokyo road is a through road, and shouldn’t be hindered for ambulances and the like.

5. It is extremely dangerous on the Tokyo road with the amount of cows/calves that are allowed to roam across the road unattended.

6. The bridge across the Seekooi River is in need of urgent repair.

7. If the back road behind Ocean View is to be used as a detour, it needs to be graded properly.

8. Many streets do not have names and where we live it’s a danger to enter our access road, as the pavements on both sides is so overgrown that we cannot see traffic approaching on the left or right-our verges in Paradise need to be seen to regularly, also the walkways down to the beach are supposed to be kept open and clear 9. The main road into Jeffreys Bay should have been made wider. There was an ideal

opportunity when The circles were being constructed; the traffic build up is horrendous.

10. There are two roads that could really do with circles; one is Coral and St Francis and Nautilus and St Francis.

11. What about the “white elephant “ at the entrance to Ocean View, where millions were spent and no income is generated from the building over the years. It is a playground for vandals, who have had the greatest delight in smashing windows, removing windows, removing bricks and the like. A very nice braai area was provided with shade and seating, Bricks have been stolen, so the table top is now lying on the ground! Such appreciation.

12. The terrible state of Dogwood and Salie Streets.

13. The power box between 29-31 has been broken for 2 years, and nothing has been done about that.

14. Our rubbish pick up day at Paradise is on a Monday. Why would an empty truck be combing our streets on a Friday (ie) 1st March. Rumour has it they are looking for scrap metal. Why with the municipal truck, and in Working time, we have also seen them on a Sunday. It must be good to work for the municipality and get all this overtime and use of these massive vehicles that chew fuel.

IE bruin hondjie kom blitsvinnig om die hoek.

Te vinnig, want haar wiele gly en sy skuif effens sywaarts in die teenoorgestelde rigting. Dan moet sy uithaal met die voorpote om weer op koers te kom.

Nuuskierig loer sy tussen haar mense-tannie se bene deur om te sien wie by die voordeur is. Dan kom sy vriendelik nader om die besoeker met ’n nat tong te groet.

Die 4-jarige worshond, Mischa, is vanaf die tweede week in Februarie in haar agterlyfverlam en moet sedertdien oor die weg kom met ’n spesiale “rolstoel” - ’n sitplek met twee wieletjies waarin haar agterlyf vasgegespe word.

Hoewel haar mense-tannie, Yolanda du Plessis, nie vir die operasie kon betaal wat Mischa weer sou laat loop nie, was daar by haar geen sprake om Mischa uit te sit nie.

“Ek kon van die begin af sien sy ly nie. Sy wou lewe,” sê Yolanda.

“Ons boere maak mos ’n plan en met die hulp van vriende - Maryke Pretorius en Hennie Wessels - het ons ’n rolstoel van PVC-pype en nie-rekbare materiaal prakseer.

Ons het gemeet en gepas tot ons die

regte ‘kontrepsie’ aanmekaargesit het. Van die eerste oomblik toe ons haar daarin gesit het, was sy in haar element.”

Mischa is duidelik ’n gelukkige hondjie. Haar oë blink en sy beweeg die hele huis vol met haar “rolstoel”. “Sy blaf reeds vir geluide en doen wat honde doen. Sy kan selfs al vir ’n paar minute op haar eie loop,” vertel Yolanda.

Volgens haar het alles begin toe hulle begin oplet dat Mischa swaar loop. “Op 19 Februarie het sy baie getjank en ons het haar dadelik na Cape Cross Veearts gevat waar hulle gesê het ons moet haar baie stil hou.

“Ons het haar so stil as moontlik gehou, maar die Woensdag omstreeks 19:00 kon sy nie meer loop nie, haar hele agterlyfie was verlam en sy het haar agterlyfie soos ’n oor die vloer gesleep.

“Die Donderdag het ons haar weer veearts toe gevat, waar vasgestel is, dat die een kussing tussen haar rugwerwels geskuif het. Die enigste oplossing was ’n operasie van R10 500 -’n operasie wat ons nie kan bekostig nie. Óf ons moes haar laat uitsit, ’n opsie wat ek nie vir een oomblik oorweeg het nie.”

“Sy het soveel begrip vir my situasie gehad en het waterterapie en stimulasie vir Mischa voorgestel,” vertel Yolanda.

Elke dag tap Yolanda ’n bad halfvol louwarm water, sit ’n handdoek onder Mischa en tel haar in die water waar sy vir ’n paar minute ’n swemaksie met haar bene doen. Yolanda erken dat dit in die begin maar moeilik gegaan het, maar elke keer wat sy haar in die bad getel het, het dit ’n rapsie beter gegaan.

Verder moet sy ook elke dag Mischa se agterpote vir stimulasie vryf.

Aeroplanes, bikes and skydiving HEILIE COMBRINCK

A first of its kind Wings and Wheels Festival, where the public will enjoy the opportunity to view an extraordinary variety of four and two wheel vehicles as well as various models of aircraft, will be held at the Uitenhage airfield next month.

“We are excited as there has never been a festival of this nature held in Uitenhage. The airfield is ideal for this kind of outdoor event,” said Lourens Kruger, organiser of the festival.

It is hosted by the Uitenhage Airfield Association and the two identified charities which will benefit from the festival are the Drostdy Workplace for Mentally Disabled Persons and the Uitenhage SPCA. According to Kruger the Harley Davidson motorcycle clubs from the Nelson Mandela Bay as well as other motorcycle clubs, will be present and there will be displays of new vehicles by most of Uitenhage’s new vehicle dealerships.

Fishing and ‘smileys’ at Kirkwood Wildsfees “A festival of firsts” is the theme for the 2013 Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, which annually attracts more than 45 000 visitors to picturesque Sundays River Valley.

Wildsfees firsts include being the first – and only - game auction in South Africa where disease-free buffalo from the Addo Elephant National park are for sale; the first major festival to be wheelchair friendly; one of the first South African festival to go green; and the first to host a mohair expo.

It is also the first and only festival to in-

clude a mix of over 300 specialist stalls, agricultural and wildlife expos, supervised kiddies play area, “wild rides” and live entertainment.

New firsts for 2013 include an extreme fishing tournament, a “Lang Lag-tafel” where diners will savour “smileys” (sheep heads) while being entertained by a comedian and the “Loerie in die Bos” rock experience, according to festival director Jenni Honsbein.

‘’n Ramp gaan kom oor al ons mense’ MARISKA SPOORMAKER ’n Sitrusboer van die Gamtoosvallei sê hy is bitter spyt dat so min boere kwytskelding van die nuwe minimum dagloon (R105) vir plaaswerkers gaan vra het.

Volgens Danie Malan van die plaas Tierhok weet hy maar van twee ander boere wat dit gedoen het.

“Ek doen regtigwaar ’n beroep op alle boere om aansoek hiervoor te doen.

Volgens Malan hoef hy tot tyd en wyl die regering uitsluitsel oor sy aansoek gee, nie die nuwe hoër loon aan sy werkers te betaal nie.

Maar hy het gehoor van ’n plaas waar 40 werkers afgedank is.

“By die groot pakhuise word nou masjiene ingesit wat die sitrus in die bokse gaan pak. Een só ’n masjien vervang agt

werkers,” voeg Malan by.

Die vallei se plukseisoen begin dié maand en duur tot Oktober.

Die Gamtoosvallei met sy arbeidsintensiewe sitrus- en groenteboerderye het tot dusver vir tussen 5 000 en 6 000 permanente werkgeleenthede gesorg, wat in pluktyd verdubbel.

Petrus du Preez, voorsitter van die Gamtoos-landbouvereniging, sê Agri Oos-Kaap kyk oorkoepelend na maniere waarop verligting gevind kan word.

Intussen is hy bekommerd oor die uitwerking wat die hoër daglone op die meer produktiewe en kundige plaaswerkers kan hê, “want die minder produktiewe of kundige werker is nou op sy of haar betaalvlak en dit kan groot ongelukkigheid veroorsaak. Gevolglik sal ons die beter werkers se lone óók moet verhoog.”

In die Langkloof, waar sagtevrugte geproduseer word, is die plukseisoen op dreef.

“Ons is nie so arbeidsintensief soos die Gamtoosvallei nie,” sê Marius van der Westhuizen, voorsitter van die Langkloof Landbougenootskap. “Maar ja, sodra die plukseisoen verby is, sal ons moet kyk na herstrukturering.”

IE brilpikkewyn, oftewel Afrikapikkewyn, se bewaring is nou só belangrik dat die Oos-Kaap ’n hand van samewerking na die Wes-Kaap uitgesteek het.

“Dit kan net nie anders nie,” verduidelik Trudi Malan, bestuurder van Penguins Eastern Cape (PEC).

“Die voëls vrek van die honger onder meer omdat hul kosbron weens oorvissery bedreig word. Oliestortings, plastiekbesoedeling en klimaatsverandering speel ook ’n rol.”

Kleiner organisasies, selfs individuele navorsers, beywer hulle al jare lank vir die brilpikkewyn se behoud, maar Malan glo ’n stewige en goed gekoördineerde spanpoging bly die beste antwoord.

“Gevolglik is daar op ons afgelope jaarvergadering besluit om Penguins Eastern Cape te amalgameer met die Wes-Kaapse SuiderAfrikaanse Stigting vir die Bewaring van Kusvoëls (Sanccob).”

Sanccob, het Malan verduidelik, geniet nie net internasionale geloofwaardigheid en dus ook internasionale geldelike ondersteuning nie, maar is ook die organisasie wat dadelik op enige oliestorting in die Suid-Afrikaanse oseane moet reageer om die seevoëls tot redding te kom.

“As Sanccob-personeel in sulke krisisse in elk geval Oos-Kaap toe moet kom, kan ons mos net sowel deurgaans saamwerk. Die brilpikkewyn is uniek aan Afrika en verdien daarom net die beste bewaringspogings,” het

Malan bygevoeg.

Die meeste brilpikkewyne kom nou amptelik in die Oos-Kaap voor. Die digste pikkewynbevolking is dié van Algoabaai se Bird-eilandgroep waarvan St. Croix-eiland die “hoofstad” met die meeste inwoners is.

In 2004 het hul getalle op dié eilandgroep en die verder geleë Bird-eiland op 60 000 gestaan; in 2009 het dit tot 18 000 gekrimp.

Die regering het al in 2008 die eilande tot mariene bewaringsgebied verklaar, en ’n 20 km-taboesone vir kommersiële vissersbote daarrondom ingestel.

Die resultaat hiervan was dat die pikkewyne se getalle in 2012 tot nagenoeg 21 000 gegroei het. Maar, nou is die proefperiode verby en kan kommersiële vissersbote weer daar inbeweeg.

Malan het in Augustus, verlede jaar al gesê die regering sal sy navorsingsfokus na die Oos-Kaap moet verskuif as hy wil hê dat sy voorgestelde bestuursplan vir die voortbestaan van die bedreigde brilpikkewyn moet slaag.

In die verlede het die meeste navorsingsgeld na die Wes-Kaap gevloei.

“Sanccob kry ook finansiering vir navorsing. Ons glo dat die PEC/Sanccob-samesmelting meer navorsing dié kant toe sal bring,” het Malan gister gesê.

Margaret Roestorf, uitvoerende direkteur van Sanccob, het PEC en sy suster-organisasies soos Jeffreysbaai Pikkewyn-Rehabilitasie bedank dat hulle Sanccob vertrou om hul goeie werk van die afgelope 23 jaar voort te sit.

Die samesmelting van Penguins Eastern Cape (PEC) en die Suider-Afrikaanse Stigting vir die Bewaring van Kusvoëls (Sanccob) raak nie die werk van bestaande personeel nie. Xolani Cawo (links), kurator van PEC se rehabilitasiesentrum in Kaap St. Francis, hier by Trudi Malan, hoof van PEC, sal sy werk voortsit.

Local government has joined forces with the power utility Eskom, the business sector and the media to stem the flow of losses caused by electricity theft.

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is a core partner of Operation Khanyisa, a campaign that aims to mobilise all South Africans for legal, safe and efficient electricity use.

SALGA has recently committed to redoubling its efforts to combat the crime of electricity theft, which it says is responsible for municipalities losing up to R3.2 billion each year.

According to SALGA’s Executive Director for Municipal Infrastructure Services, Mthobeli Kolisa, SALGA needs to coordinate and support municipalities to act and report their action in respect of electricity theft, and to review their bylaws to have more stringent penalties against electricity theft.

At the launch of Operation Khanyisa, Xolile George, CEO of SALGA, described electricity theft as “a pandemic coursing through our delivery capabilities and fiscal planning.”

“Local government,” he said “plays a pivotal role in the distribution of electricity, and electricity theft hits at the very heart of the electricity distribution industry in South Africa.”

“Enough is enough,” George continued.

“We have joined forces with our partners in Operation Khanyisa and will stamp out this crime.”

Together with Crime Line, Operation Khanyisa provides a platform for South Africans to report electricity theft anonymously, by sending a detailed SMS to 32211 (R1/SMS).

YLAN Lightfoot was the star performer at the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS event in Durban on the weekend, winning every heat he contested and comfortably taking both the u.20 and u.18 boys’ titles.

Competing in rippable one metre waves at New Pier, the 18 year-old DaKine and Nixon team-rider from Jeffreys Bay earned a wildcard into the u.20 speciality event by winning the u.18 final. He went on to dominate his older competitors to pocket a total of R15 000 in prize-money and take the early lead in both the Billabong Junior Series and SSA Pro Surf

Tour (PST) u.18 rankings. Jeffreys Bay’s Emma Smith placed second in the girls u.20.

Eighteen-year-old Fox Team rider Lightfoot set Durban alight this weekend by winning back to back titles in the first leg of the Billabong Junior Series held at Durban’s New Pier. Dylan having won the u.18 division was then given a wild card entry into the u.20 Division and stunned the crowd by comfortably surfing his way to first place , totalling dominating the older competitors. He ultimately walked off the beach with a cool R15 000 for his outstanding effort. This puts Dylan in the lead for both the Billabong Junior Series and the Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour

RVCA Junior Surf Series launches big in J­Bay J

EFFREYS Bay will be home to the very first three-day RVCA Junior Series event at Lower Point from March 22.

The event boasts prize money of over R100 00 in prizes.

RVCA, pronounced “Rooka” - combining the subcultures of art, music, fashion and modern lifestyle - is a unique event where young surfers are encouraged to display creativity, originality and community awareness, as well as their sublime moves in the surf.

A core part of the RVCA concept is the Art-

ist Network Programme (ANP), which showcases inspirational artists pushing creative boundaries. Contemporary artist, Fuzzy Slippers, is part of the ANP and he will be there creating an installation artwork to launch the Instagram art competition that runs in conjunction with the event.

An art wall, with all materials sponsored

by Plascon, will be an opportunity for surfers to express themselves by using some stencil art, wildstyle graffiti or an intricate urban art piece.

RVCA’s Robin Kietzmann, says: “It is

about ripping in the water and also giving back on land.”

The surfing event will be contested in boys and girls divisions in five age groups: u.10, u.12, u.14, u.16 and u.20.

In addition, special awards will be presented in new categories to keep it interesting.

Two ‘On-Fire’ awards will go to the surfers displaying the most radical and expressive approach to surfing. The prize will be a brand new FireWire surfboard for each winner.

The ‘Fly Away’ award will be for the biggest aerial of the contest, and the winner can

choose a friend and a swell to surf and will be flown down to Jeffreys Bay courtesy of JBay Travel, where they will stay at African Perfection Bed and Breakfast.

The highest heat score “scores” an apple iPad and custom-built Nixon accessories, while the biggest curve wins a Sector 9 skateboard.
