Apiesdraai to be upgraded MONIQUE BASSON THE unbearable stench of raw sewage at Apiesdraai that compel motorists to keep their windows shut tight or use an alternative route, may soon be something of the past. The long overdue upgrading of the Apiesdraai Sewerage Pump Station on the road to Aston Bay is set to become a reality in the near future. The Apiesdraai Pump Station which services Ocean View, Aston Bay and the Marina Martinique will be upgraded in the next eight months at an estimated cost of R14 million. Tender applications closed on April 30. The bid process will take place in May. If all goes according to schedule, this process will be finalised and a contractor selected by the end of the month. Construction is set to take about seven months. According to Kouga municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the upgrade is necessary to cope with the increase in flow due to recent and future housing developments. “The upgrade will see the construction of a second reinforced concrete pump sump adjacent to the existing Apiesdraai pump sump, as well as the installation of two sub-

mersible pumps that are connected to two booster pumps on ground level,” said Randall. “A second rising main from the Apiesdraai Pump Station to the inlet works at the waste water treatment works will be constructed, while the existing sump will be rehabilitated. The overflow pond will also be extended and the steel pipe work in the existing valve chamber will be replaced, while the existing submersible pumps will be reconditioned.” Furthermore, a building will be constructed to house the booster pumps, the pump’s delivery pipe manifold, the electrical switch gear and a stand-by generator. “In order to ensure that the project also stimulates local economic development, the tender requires that at least 10% of the contract value must be sublet to SMMEs and emerging contractors from Kouga,” said Randall. “At least 20 job opportunities must be created on site for the duration of the contract period.” According to Randall, other sewerage projects currently under way are the upgrade of the waste water treatment works at Kruisfontein, Weston, Hankey and Patensie. “These treatment works are also being upgraded to cater for housing developments.”

SARAH BARTMANN CENTRE OF REMEMBRANCE

Construction on Centre in full swing MONIQUE BASSON CONSTRUCTION on the R164 million unique heritage centre, which will not only create job opportunities but will also attract thousands of tourists, is in full swing. A sod-turning ceremony, conducted by the Department of Arts and Culture at Vergaderingskop in Hankey on Friday, marked the official start of construction of the long-awaited Sarah Bartmann Centre of Remembrance. Situated at her burial site, the Centre will honour and document the life of Bartmann, as well as the heritage of the Khoi-San people. Construction is set to take 30 months. On completion, the 4804.5m² heritage site will include the declared gravesite, a museum consisting of two sections, the Khoi-San museum and the Sarah Bartmann museum. Visitors will be able to follow a route depicting a narrative about the Khoi-San history in order to contextualise Bartmann’s life. The Centre will furthermore be home to a large genocide wall that contains dates and descriptions of all Khoi and San genocides in Southern Africa and the Great Place of Celebration in tribute to all female individuals who played a noteworthy role to encourage racial and gender equality in South Africa from the date of Bartmann’s burial. It will furthermore consist of a shallow trench around the grave, which will serve the purpose of keeping a physical and symbolic space of dig-

nity between onlookers and the grave, as well as a symbolic and working garden, a reception building, retail spaces, workshops, auditorium, story telling pit and ponds. According to Teresa Shabalala from the Department, 1 960 skilled and semi-skilled workers from the area will be employed during the construction phase at a total cost of R5 million. “Additionally, R500 000 has been set aside for the contracting of small, medium and micro enterprises from the Hankey area. Only if the required goods cannot be sourced locally, will the contractor source it from outside,” says Shabalala. “Some 10% of the total cost must be used to purchase material from local suppliers up to 50km from Hankey.” According to Shabalala, 134 jobs will be created after the completion of the Centre. Three years after the project was first initiated, construction was set to start in December last year; however the recommended contractors for the project withdrew their application at the last minute. This resulted in a delay of more than two months. .The Sarah Bartmann Centre of Remembrance is part of the Department of Arts and Culture’s legacy projects aimed at transforming the heritage sector and reflecting the role played by all communities and individuals in transforming the country irrespective of their background, religion and gender.

The Department of Arts and Culture launched the construction of the Sarah Bartmann Centre of Remembrance in Hankey on Friday. Attend ing the sod turning ceremo ny is Kouga mayor, Booi Koerat.

278 HOUSES TO BE BUILD

Jeffreys Bay Tourism to meet

Patensie receives Waste Water Treatment Works MONIQUE BASSON PATENSIE residents can finally bid farewell to the existing bucket and septic tank system that is currently their daily fate. Not only will this outdated system be replaced by a waterborne sanitation system, but it will also allow for the construction of 278 RDP-houses in the area. With limited resources and no treatment works of its own, the National Department of Public Works donated the Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) at the prison in Patensie, as well as the adjoining land to the Kouga Municipality last Thursday in order for them to serve the growing needs of the community. The WWTW, which fell under the custodianship of the Department, previously served only the Patensie Prison Precinct. According to the Minister of Public Works and MP to the Kouga Municipality, Thulas Nxesi, the growing municipality urgently required a waterborne sanitation system to replace the existing bucket and septic tank system. “It was established that the cheapest and most effective option was to expand the present prison WWTW to serve both the prison and the local community. Most importantly, this will improve delivery of services to the community. ” says Nxisi. “When Department constructed the prison approximately 30 years ago, the municipality was unable to provide the necessary infrastructure required for servicing the utility needs of the prison in terms of water borne sewage, as the town did not possess a Waste

Water Treatment Works that was capable to service the needs of the prison. The Department, therefore decided to construct the WWTW itself. The facility has since served the direct needs of the prison only, currently housing a population of 489.” With the WWTW in place, the construction of 278 RDP-houses at Stuurmanskop can now

also begin in all earnest. According to Kouga Infrastructure portfolio councillor Patrick Kota, now that the necessary WWTW is in place, construction on the houses can start. “Construction on these houses were delayed due to insufficient infrastructure, this however, no longer poses a problem,” Kota.

THE Jeffreys Bay Tourism will have their annual general meeting at the Jeffreys Bay Tourism Office on May 15. All interested parties and individuals are welcome to attend the meetand-greet beforehand at 18:00.

BEING hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the best Afrikaans films ever made, Die Windpomp is off to the glamorous and prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France this month to wow international buyers. Die Windpomp is directed and written by former Nico Malan High School-learner Etienne Fourie. “With so many glowing reviews and overwhelming support and positive feedback from SA audiences, taking Die Windpomp to Cannes during the South African release is perfect timing,” says Die Windpomp’s producer Chris Roland, who owns ZenHQ Films in Cape Town and is attending Cannes. Die Windpomp’s international marketing campaign started over a year ago at the Berlin Film Festival, before the film was even shot, and was continued at last years Cannes Festival, the American Film Market and Sundance. Those efforts resulted in over twenty international buyers expressing an interest in acquiring Die Windpomp, and two interested in English remake rights. Cannes is now being used to initiate sales contracts leading to international distribution. “International audiences are interested in foreign language films, because now more than ever people are interested in other cultures. But they are very discerning and the market is very competitive. Die Windpomp is the perfect fit, and Cannes is a key festival for reaching the international audience,” says Roland’s partner and Die Windpomp producer Lee-Ann Cotton. Die Windpomp is currently on circuit across South Africa.

Matt McGillivray dominates at RVCA MATT McGillivray was victorious in a nailbiting finish in the RVCA Junior Challenge JBay, winning the premier u.20 division as well as winning himself the coveted entry into the JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA to be held at Supertubes in JBay in June. The final day of competition started off fairly slowly, with a chill in the air and with the high tide holding the sets off the Lower Point. Waves were inconsistent, with occasional pulses coming through. In one of the early heats of the day, on one of those pulses, James Ribbink (DBN) scraped into an absolute bomb and rode it all the way through to the inside, picking up a score of 7.5, winning the second u.12 Boys semi and earning his spot into the final. In the u.20 Girls semi number two, a fierce paddle battle between Chanelle Botha (Warner Beach) and Gina Smith (JBay) coupled with a sudden flurry of waves saw Gina turn the heat around and go from fourth place to first place, before finally dropping into second place and advancing into the final along with Olivia Brand (Umdloti). Before the finals hit the water it was time for the Nixon Weird Board event. Eight surfers were commissioned to each shape a ‘weird board,’ an unconventional board shape and design, for this fun event. Shapers who delivered boards were Thys Strydom, Dutchie, Eric Stedman, Simon Fish, Glen Row, David Stubbs, Anton Butler and Glen D’Arcy. Some serious fun ensued in the tiny but reeling Lower Point waves, with Richard Kidd and York Van Jaarsveldt both being declared heat winners, each taking home a Nixon Blaster Bluetooth Speaker as reward. In the u.10 Boys final it was Christian Venter who came out firing, and picked up an early lead. James Ribbink was hot on his heels, however, and soon overtook Christian. Once James had the lead, he didn’t let it go and remained the heat winner all the way through

to the final siren. Viviers Strydom was in second, Christian Venter ended up in third and Alex Townsend was fourth. Ribbink stayed in the water for the u.12 Boys final, and played a patient game, sitting wide and waiting for the good set waves. His strategy paid off and he won this division as well, beating York Van Jaarsveldt, Tide-Lee Ireland and Sebastian Baurield into the minor positions. “The waves were a little bit onshore out there, but it was really fun,” said Ribbink of the conditions. “I wasn’t sure how I had done, but in the middle of the under twelve final I heard that I had won the under ten final and I was stoked. In the under twelve final I decided to sit wide. The waves were breaking really fast on the inside and then they were slowing down on the outside and that’s where you could get some good scores, so I went and sat there and got two good ones.” Sophie Bell was the outstanding surfer of the u.14 Girls final. She scored an 8.5 points out of a possible 10 points for her highest scoring ride, backed it up with a 5.75 for a clear victory, and left all the other surfers in the final needing a combination of waves to catch her. Finn Musson was second, Kirsty McGillivray third and Zoe Smith was fourth. The only international surfer in the event, Sebastian Williams, surged into an early lead in the u.14 Boys final, despite a strong push from Koby Oberholzer. Sebastian, who is a South African who grew up in Mexico, remained in the lead with some fast and lightfooted surfing in the final, with Koby, Angelo Faulkner and Saxton Randall filling up the minor placings. New kid on the block Bevan Willis surfed a powerful and explosive U16 final against some fierce competitors to take the win with relative ease. “I picked up a decent wave near the beginning of the heat, and then I hassled the guys a bit,” said Willis of his strategy. “That wave at the end was a really good one.

I didn’t hear what the score was, but I knew that it was a decent score.” His second score was a 6, and combined with his earlier score of 4.75 saw the Undloti surfer with a heat total of 10.75 out of a possible 20 points, with Jordy Maree in second. Jake Elkington was in third and Adin Masencamp in 4th. The Smith family was well represented in the u.20 Girls final, with Emma and Gina duking it out with Olivia Brand and Jade Mets. The Smith’s made it one-two, with Emma winning convincingly and with Gina in second. Jade Mets came in third and Olivia Brand in fourth.

McGillivray threw caution to the wind in the u.20 Final, laying it all on the line by going for some big aerial moves and pulling them off successfully. His first such move, a big forehand air reverse saw Matt score 6.75 and go firmly into the lead. Max Armstrong fought back hard but ended up in the runner-up spot, with Dylan Lightfoot in third and Slade Prestwich in fourth. “In the beginning everyone was sitting very far up the point, so I tried to come a bit lower down the point to get one or two to start off,” said Matt of his strategy in the final. “Local knowledge definitely helps in these conditions.”

Funfilled family affair at Sunridge run/walk THE eighth Sunridge Village Family 10km road race and 5km fun walk will be held on Saturday, with the starting and finishing points at the shopping centre, next to Kragga Kamma Road in PE. The aim of this year’s event is to have a record breaking 2 500 participants. “It can be done! This will make it one of the biggest 10km events in the Metro,” said Shane Brown, chairman of the Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk organising committee. Organised by the Port Elizabeth Amateur Ath-

letic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, this event promises to be the greatest to date with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and prizes. “Although an official EPA road running event, the run/walk caters for the whole family with distances of both 5km and 10km,” said Suzanne Fincham, Centre Manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre. “The school with the most bulk entries in the 5km race will win R1 000.” Other fun category prizes include first Family Home, Parent & Pram, Dad & Dog and Mom &

Tot. However, there is a restriction of one dog per entry. Entrants wanting to qualify for these special prizes must indicate this at registration. Results will be available for both the 10km and 5km events. These will be posted on the windows in front of Sunridge Build It and on www.sunridgevillage.co.za shortly after the prize giving. Aartjie na sy Vaartjie The Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay hosted their annual Golf Day at the Jeffreys Bay Golf Club on April 26. Despite the weather conditions, a field of 91 golfers participated. Despite the tough economic conditions and trying times more than 70 businessmen and friends of the Rotary made donations and sponsorships to enable the club to have a successful day and to be in a position to make a difference to the community and the needy. A huge thank you goes out to all the sponsors and donors. The competition format was Individual Stableford. The winners are (pictured) Tinus Smith (1st 39pts), Flip Meyer (2nd 38pts), Rhalf Manuel (3rd 37c/o) and Almero Weyers (4th 37pts).
