CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2023
Graduation marks the end of an important journey in the lives of our students and their families, and the start of an exciting and rewarding future that the Class of 2023 have before them. It is an occasion to congratulate them on their achievements and contribution and to wish them well in their hopes and aspirations for the future.
I am delighted to share with you the achievements of the Class of 2023 in this document.
It is one of the great joys and privileges of a teacher to observe the growth and development of students from children into confident and highly capable young adults. Our mission at Kinross Wolaroi School is to provide a challenging, holistic education that equips our students to approach life with confidence, able to pursue their aspirations and contribute positively to their communities. I believe our expansive curriculum and the experience and actions of our current and past students provide clear evidence our mission is real and lived.
Our Year 12 graduates for 2023 have demonstrated a genuine depth of talent and an eagerness to engage and contribute to a vast array of activities. We have seen outstanding performances and leadership in music, drama, in the classroom, in the industrial and creative arts, in the domain of social justice, and on the sports field.
Among our Year 12 cohort we have:
• Two students who came first in the State in their subjects and one recipient of the Premier’s All Rounder Award
• An Australian National Rowing Champion and Gold Medalist
• The winner of the ABC Heywire competition for the Central West
• The Orange Lions Youth of the Year
• Students who have obtained diplomas from Australian and International Music and Drama examination bodies
• Winners of prestigious Youth Orchestra Concerto and Chamber Music competitions
• An Australian Power Lifting champion
• The Grand Champion School Parader from the Sydney Royal Show
• Outstanding Equestrians
• And students who, despite enduring season ending injuries, wonderfully supported teams in a coaching capacity.
Our student body have been superbly led and represented by our School Prefects and Student Leadership teams. Many of our Senior Students have shown courage and commitment in their desire to make our School and broader community a finer place. Just a few initiatives of our Leaders included:
• Staging an outstanding Central West Leadership Forum for student leaders from across the region
• The creation of student gatherings aimed to boost school spirit, unity and pride, and to give greater voice to our student body and helping all students feel they belong
• The creation of the Kinrossian award for students who have exhibited kindness and generosity.
To our graduates: As you embark on your individual journeys, always remember the impact you can have on your communities and the world at large. Your education and families have given you a head start in life. It is now your responsibility to use your knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the life of others. Your communities need leaders, change-makers, and compassionate individuals who are willing to extend a helping hand. Find ways, no matter how small they may seem, to give back. By doing so, you not only enrich the lives of others but also find a sense of fulfillment and purpose in your own journey. Remember that even the tiniest pebble can create ripples in a vast ocean, and each act of kindness and service has the potential to inspire others to do the same.
I wish to thank our graduating class of 2023 for the wonderful example they set for our student body and their outstanding contribution to our school.
I wish them every success for the future.
Dr Andrew Parry Principal

ARTEXPRESS
Annie Dedman’s work, Rural Realities was also selected for ARTEXPRESS. Annie’s first-hand experience at seeing the diminishing services in Nyngan provided a rich source of imagery for the work. Conveyed through woven wool, printmaking and embroidery, it somehow reached out to the viewer with a nostalgia of familiarity and loss. I congratulate her for evident dedication and perseverance to produce work of such a high standard, and also recognize the mentorship of her teacher, Toni Bilton, and the support of our Technical Assistant Matthew Thomas. Annie can be proud of having so successfully conveyed a deeply personal issue with such resonance. CLASS OF 2023 VALETE
DUX OF 2023 SHUBHANG NAGAR
Good afternoon Dr Parry, friends and everyone gathered here today to celebrate the KWS class of 2023.
Before I go any further, I’d love to take this moment to express my gratitude to the school and its community for entrusting me with this honour, the opportunity to speak to all of you here today as part of this wonderful cohort. Though, I won’t lie, the flashy robes are a great added bonus. Today, I look to every one of my fellow Year 12s, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that this is one of the biggest occasions of our life – we’ve really done it. Regardless of the paths we take from here, we do have one more joint obstacle (or ‘collective human experience’ as I’m sure the English department would love to hear) – our HSC exams. But I’m confident in every one of us that we will make it past, and we’ll do it convincingly.
I started at Kinross in 2018, a barely five-foot-tall 12-yearold with, although I wouldn’t have admitted it at the time, very little understanding of how the world worked. My first day of Year 7, January 31st 2018, is still etched into my brain – that first ever French lesson we spent colouring in printouts of the Eiffel Tower, that first ever Maths lesson with Mr Grant who’d refer to us all as his ‘homies’, that first ever English lesson where we spent half an hour talking about which books we’d all read. And I’m sure that today, my final day at Kinross, will be remembered with the same kind of enthusiasm when I look back five years from now.
Even now as I stand here speaking to you, it really is just sinking in that many of the people, places and pastimes that have snuck their way into my daily routine over the past few years will no longer be a part of it – Wednesday afternoon KFC runs with Jack after a gruelling session of Extension 2 Maths, the daily bus ride from Bathurst and back (although I’m not sure I’ll miss this quite as much!), Physics doubles with Hughie, Lazo and Tinky where we’d be doing anything and everything except studying for Physics. I could keep listing these but then we’d probably all be here into the late evening. So, if there’s one piece of advice I’d give to all of you, it’s to enjoy the few years you have left here – from my own experience, I know that the first few years of high school feel like they take decades to get through, but the last couple really do race by.
I’m sure we’ve all heard the old adage that “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. Trust me, back in Year 8 and 9, I thought that to be one of the corniest sayings I’d ever heard in my life. But, as all corny sayings tend to, it holds true for most challenges you’ll undergo in life, least of all the HSC. I remember back in Year 9 Rite Journey, we were made to list the qualities and attributes that we deemed least important – the first one that came to my mind was resilience. I’d always hated the word but,
would you know it, it’s been my best friend for the past year. This HSC year hasn’t been smooth sailing to say the least – I’ve become familiar with disappointment and frustration at the best of times, as I’m sure we all have, but resilience hasn’t failed me once. Not many of you here would know this, but I think it is worth you knowing that in Year 7 I didn’t receive a single academic award – wow, it’s been a long journey! But I’m certain that if I can do it, anyone can.
It’s only right that I acknowledge the driving force behind my success this year – the plethora of resources and vast knowledge of the teachers who I’ve been lucky to learn from for the past two years. I’ve always been in awe of how they’ve managed to turn up to every single class with a smile on their faces, ever eager to teach, regardless of their own circumstances and, I’m sure, exhaustion.
Mrs Lewis and Mrs McCalman, you’ve been perhaps the greatest Advanced – Extension English teaching combination known to man. From Mrs Lewis’ unparalleled knowledge of the English syllabus and her penchant for responding at light speed to every draft essay I’ve ever emailed to her, paired with Mrs McCalman’s love for flair and creativity (and always being up for a chat despite her busy schedule), you’ve made English not only intellectually stimulating but also enjoyable. And Mrs Lewis, may I add, the prospect of a ‘boom’ on your part was great motivation all year.
Mr Willis – I think we might have interacted more in the first three lessons of Year 12 than we did all of Year 11! Regardless, your comprehensive knowledge of all things Chemistry has been a most useful resource for me this past year. From finding limiting reagents to making fireballs in class, Chemistry has been one of my favourite HSC subjects due, in no small part, to your efforts in combining witty banter with education to make the classroom an enjoyable space for all.
Ah, Mr McLennan. Where do I start. For those of you who might not know, Mr McLennan and I share a great bond derived from our mutual interest of Drake. Be it time dilation, projectile motion, or just an end-of-year viewing of Interstellar, I never missed an opportunity to remind him and the class of any “Drake references” I could point out. Jokes aside, Mr McLennan, as I have reminded him many times, was the first teacher to ever let me know that they were proud of me back in Year 8, which meant a lot and still does. His unwavering stance that Physics is superior to Chemistry has also been very persuading at times (though I’m not sure I’m quite as sold on that!) So, sir, we might have “started from the bottom” but now we’re definitely here.

We move to Mr Bowman. The only teacher I know of that could make a class at 7:30 in the morning not only productive but entertaining. His vast expanse of stories, which covered everything from nuns to his favourite coffee order (large flat white with no sugar if you’re wondering), always prompted raucous laughter from the class. He always humoured my never-ending barrage of emails often sent at odd hours and was always keen for everything maths (and of course a glass of red!) If you’re lucky enough to have Mr Bowman as a teacher currently or in the future, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that he is one of the most dedicated and passionate teachers you’ll ever meet and for that, thank you sir.
And, of course, my parents – the endless, mind-numbing hours they have spent driving up and down from Bathurst to get me to sports games, school events and, in the recent past, exams, can’t be repaid – thank you for all you have done.
Before I leave you, I want to conclude with a parting quote from the famous orator A$AP Rocky - “Never let success get to your head and never let failure get to your heart”. Best wishes, and goodbye.
