CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2024

As we farewell the graduating Class of 2024, I want to acknowledge not just their achievements, of which there have been many, but the values they have demonstrated throughout their time here.

Many of our graduates are exceptional musicians, athletes, dramatists, scholars and leaders. Beyond those accomplishments, what truly makes me proud is the way they have contributed to the life of our school community, showing commitment, kindness, and a willingness to serve others. It is the choices we make today that shape our future character, and they have chosen well.

This cohort have shown us through their actions a genuine care and concern for the welfare of others, particularly for those whose life journeys have been less fortunate than our own. They have proven time and time again to be resilient, dedicated and supportive of one another. I want to particularly acknowledge our school leaders, the Prefects, our Head Prefects and Captains for their outstanding service, example and commitment. To every member of this graduating class, thank you for your contributions. You have made our school a better place, and we are deeply grateful.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the dedication of our teachers and staff. Your passion for education, your care, and your guidance have been instrumental in assisting our students reach this milestone. On behalf of our students, parents and the entire school community, I extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you.

To our parents and families, congratulations. This moment is not just a celebration of your child’s accomplishments, but also a recognition of your unwavering support throughout their journey. We know that the road has not always been smooth, but your love, patience and encouragement have brought them here today. Thank you for entrusting us with your children and for the countless hours you have devoted to supporting school activities and fostering our very special community.

To our graduates, know that we are proud of you – not just for your academic success, but for the individuals you have become. You have approached school life with great enthusiasm and have been dedicated and determined in your desire to learn. Remember, that your academic results do not define you. Life is much bigger than exams and qualifications. Your true success lies in the choices you make from this moment onward. It is how you live your life, the kindness you show, the respect you give, and the contributions you make to your community that will truly matter.

I have been enormously impressed by your openness, friendliness and ‘can do’ attitude. You have integrity and authenticity, highly admirable qualities that have been shaped by your regional backgrounds and the country spirit that pervades our school community. This combined with your natural confidence and warmth are highly valuable personal attributes that you must never lose.

As you commence your journeys into the future, please allow me to share a little advice on what I believe may help you lead a meaningful and fulfilling life.

First, resist the temptation to define success solely by wealth or status. True success is about living a life of purpose, contributing to the wellbeing of others, and staying true to your values. As Albert Einstein wisely said, “try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value”.

Second, seek happiness not in fleeting pleasures but in contentment and compassion. The most enduring happiness comes from a heart that is open, kind and willing to give.

Third, follow your moral compass. In a world full of noise and distractions, stay true to yourself, your hopes and your principles. Learn from your mistakes, embrace failure as a teacher, and always strive to act with integrity. Ralph Waldo Emerson, the 19th Century American poet and philosopher once said:

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us”. Your inner strength, your values and dreams will guide you through life’s challenges.

Fourth, be resilient, life will inevitably throw challenges your way, but it’s in those moments of stillness, when you pause and reflect, that you will find strength and persevere. Know when to push forward and when to find peace in that you have.

And fifth, embrace the call to serve others. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, commit to justice, equality and the dignity of every person, regardless of their background or beliefs. Use your voice and influence to lift others up, particularly those who may not have the same advantages.

In the end, what matters most is not what you achieve, but the positive impact you have on others. If you can amplify the voices of the unheard, to extend kindness to those in need, and make the world a little brighter for others, you will have lived a life worth celebrating.

Finally, as you step into the next chapter of your life, hold onto the friendships you’ve made here. These are the people who have shared your journey, who have seen you grow, and who will continue to support you in the years ahead.

Cherish those bonds – they are some of the most valuable treasures life has to offer, and remember, you are forever part of this community.

To the Class of 2024, we wish you every success in the years to come. May you leave here with confidence, compassion and a commitment to making the world a better place.

HIGH ACHIEVER PROFILES

NIAMH WEBSTER | ATAR 99.30

Niamh joined Kinross Wolaroi in 2019. She has been an exceptional House Captain, providing a positive role model to the students of Gordon House. Niamh is commended for her significant contributions to the Performing Arts, especially her participation in the school musical, for which she was awarded Full Colours in 2024. In co-curricular, she was a member of the 1st Water Polo for which she was awarded Half Colours, and she achieved a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Niamh studied English Advanced, English Extension, French Continuers, French Extension, Chemistry and Drama. She won the 2024 prizes for Drama, English Advanced, French, French Extension, Academic Excellence, the Ex-Students’ Association Prize for Outstanding Effort and the Caltex Best All-Rounder Award.

WILLIAM HASELER | ATAR 98.70

William Haseler was awarded Dux of Kinross Wolaroi School For 2024. William studied English Advanced, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Chemistry, Physics and Economics. William showed exceptional dedication to his studies, consistently putting in long hours of focused work. This served to inspire his peers and had a positive impact on the study environment in Wolaroi Boarding House, where he commenced as a boarder in 2023. In cocurricular, William was selected the 1st XI Cricket and made a significant contribution as a player and captain of the School’s Third XV Rugby Union team. In 2024 William was the recipient of academic prizes for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, and the Carolyn Roweth Prize for the Dux.

TESSA LAWSON | ATAR 98.00

Tessa joined the school as a boarder in New House in 2019. She leads by example and has been a wonderful Boarding House Vice Captain. Tessa participated across a range of sports, playing 1sts Rugby and modelling strong and positive leadership as Captain of Women’s Rugby. She has balanced her leadership roles, her extensive co-curricular commitments, and her academic studies exceptionally well. Tessa studied English Advanced, English Extension, Chemistry, Economics, and Textiles and Design. She was winner of the McE D’Hudson Memorial Prize for English, the Prize for Textiles and Design, and the J B Caldwell Family Prize for Proxime Accessit to the Dux.

GEORGE WAKEM | ATAR 97.35

George studied English Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Chemistry, Physics and Economics. George performed his role as McLachlan House Captain with excellence, uniting students across all year groups. Active in sport, George participated in Rugby, was Rowing Captain, Swimming Age Champion, Cadet Under Officer and won Rowing Honours as well as the Wolaroi College Shield for Best All-Round Sportsman. His academic awards in 2024 included the Chris and Suzie Brown Prize for Academic Excellence, and the Sean Ngu and Craig Smith Prize for PDHPE.

SCARLETT MACKENZIE | ATAR 96.90

Scarlett approached her schooling with excellent academic rigour and focus. She has undertaken an academically demanding program of study in Year 12, combining subjects from a wide range of interests, and can be proud of her achievements. Scarlett studied English Advanced, French Continuers, French Extension, Biology, and Textiles and Design. She participated in Water Polo and Netball. In 2024 she was the recipient of the prize for Biology, the Ex-Students’ Association Prize for Outstanding Effort and the Prize for Academic Excellence.

MAGGIE ANDERSON | ATAR 94.60

Maggie commenced at Kinross Wolaroi in 2021 as a boarder in New House. She studied English Advanced, English Extension, English Extension 2, Mathematics Advanced, Modern History, Biology, and Textiles and Design. She has been active in all aspects of boarding life and was always keen to support and nurture others. Maggie played Basketball and Netball. She was Captain of Williams House, Cadet Under Officer, and achieved her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. She was winner of the Ex-Students’ Association Prize for Outstanding Effort, the prize for Improved Academic Effort, the Textiles and Design Award for Excellence in Practical Work, and the Prize for Academic Excellence. Maggie achieved 2nd place in NSW for Textiles and Design and was selected to exhibit her HSC Textiles and Design Major Project in TexStyle 2024.

EDWARD SOUTHWELL | ATAR 94.00

Having joined the school in 2019, Edward has demonstrated outstanding leadership this year in his role as Head Boy Prefect. Edward maintained a busy co-curricular program, having received Half Colours for 1st Water Polo, playing as a valuable member of the 3rd XV Rugby team. He also held the position of CUO and Company Commander of D Company in the KWS Cadet Unit, where he successfully led over 70 Cadets. Edward’s maturity and empathy have seen him develop into a strong leader, admired by his peers and teachers. Edward studied English Advanced, English Extension, English Extension 2, Mathematics Advanced, Biology, Agriculture, and Drama.

ZACHARIAH LEVI | ATAR 93.90

Zachariah has been a student at Kinross Wolaroi since 2015. He is a kind and determined student, who is respected by teachers and peers alike. He studied English Advanced, English Extension, Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Chemistry and Physics. Zach received a Prize for Academic Excellence in 2024.

NINA SMEDLEY | ATAR 92.30

Nina performed her role as Deputy Head Prefect of Kinross Wolaroi School with excellence, leaving the school a richer place for her presence. Nina has been an active participant in cocurricular activities including the Senior School Musical – for which she was awarded Half Colours. She was Choral Leader of the Chamber Choir, and also played Basketball and Netball. Nina studied English Advanced, English Extension, English Extension 2, Mathematics Standard, Ancient History, History Extension and Legal Studies. Nina won prizes for Mathematics, History and Academic Excellence.

LAYNEE VISSER | ATAR 91.50

Laynee has enjoyed great success at Kinross Wolaroi, both academically and in her musical pursuits. She has proven to be an excellent support and role model for her younger peers, particularly in Music, where she has been actively involved in the Orchestra and Senior School Concert Band, taking on the role of Band Leader and achieving Music Half Colours. She studied English Advanced, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1, Biology, Chemistry, Science Extension and Legal Studies, winning a 2024 prize for Academic Excellence.

LARS NOLLES | ATAR 91.35

Lars has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to his studies. His dedication is particularly evident in his love for Mathematics and Physics, where he excels and shows a deep understanding of complex concepts. Lars studied English Standard, Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, Physics, Design and Technology, and Economics. He was the recipient of the Prize for Design and Technology in 2024.

IONA ANDERSON | ATAR 91.25

Iona is a dedicated student who has proven her ability to commit herself to her studies. Iona has participated in 1st Football (awarded Full Colours), Water Polo, Chess, and had a role in the school musical ‘Chicago’. Iona studied English Advanced, Mathematics Advanced, French Continuers, French Extension, Legal Studies and Music 1. She was the recipient of the 2024 prize for Legal Studies.

LUCY ASHTON | ATAR 90.49

As Prefect for Brown House, Lucy made significant contributions to House life. Her commitment to co-curricular activities has been extensive, including Cadet Under Officer, achievement of Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold Awards, participation in the Senior School Concert Band and Chapel Band, selection for 1st Football and appointment as Football Captain, as well as participation in Triathlon and Snow Sports. Lucy studied English Advanced, English Extension, English Extension 2, Mathematics Advanced, French Continuers, French Extension, Music 1, and Studies of Religion. She was the recipient of the prize for Studies of Religion, The Janette Brown Prize for Pianoforte, and the Wellwood Shield for Sportsmanship, Leadership and School Spirit.

ZOE BIRD | ATAR 90.25

As a House Prefect for Douglas, Zoe demonstrated remarkable dedication. She was also committed to the Cadet Unit, holding the role of Regimental Sargeant Major and taking responsibility for Unit Headquarters. Her organisational skills are impressive, and she effectively involved her peers, fostering a sense of community and teamwork. Zoe participated in Hockey, achieving Full Colours, and was selected in the 1st Basketball team. Her subjects included English Standard, Mathematics Standard, Business Studies, Geography and Hospitality. She was awarded prizes for Hospitality, Standard English, Business Studies and Outstanding Effort.

KAITLYN RUTLEDGE | ATAR 90.25

Kaitlyn has been a valued and popular member of Gordon House since she joined the school in Year 10 and she has been a fine leader as Gordon House Captain in 2024. Kaitlyn also provided a positive role model for the younger students within the boarding community. She won Full Colours for her participation in the Cattle Team and also participated in Hockey and CrossFit. Kaitlyn studied English Advanced, English Extension, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension, Biology, Chemistry, Science Extension and Agriculture. She was the 2024 recipient of the Sue and Tamara Eisenhauer Prize for Agriculture.

SHOWCASE SELECTIONS

ARTEXPRESS

The stunning visual art of Kate Adams has been selected for ARTEXPRESS. In her body of work, Perfectly Imperfect, she delves into the innate beauty found in nature’s flaws, celebrating the imperfections that make the natural world exquisitely unique. ARTEXPRESS Virtual will launch in June 2025 and Kate’s work will be displayed in one of eight exhibits hosted all over NSW during 2025.

TEXSTYLE 2024

Congratulations to Maggie Anderson on being selected to exhibit her HSC Textiles and Design Major Project in TexStyle 2024. The project will form part of the TexStyle exhibition, which is a significant achievement. Maggie’s work is an Art quilt utilizing multiple traditional and contemporary patchwork, quilting and embellishment techniques. ‘When Wishing Was Effective’ draws on themes from the Brothers Grimm Fairytales. It will be showcased with other major projects from around the state at Gallery 76 (76 Queen Street, Concord West) from 2 March - 24 April 2025.

TERTIARY STUDY EARLY ENTRY OFFERS

University Early Entry results for the Class of 2024 have been excellent.

• 95% of eligible students were offered at least one early entry offer with most students getting their first preference:

• 80% of those students received multiple offers to multiple universities

• 60% of those students received multiple offers to multiple courses.

• 95% of Early Entry applications for highly competed places at Australian National University and UTS were successful.

• Approximately 45% of students have indicated they will undertake a gap year prior to university.

• An increased number of students secured scholarships to support their tertiary studies in 2024.

• An increased number of students secured a place in a college: Many early entry offers this year came with an accommodation offer.

Performing Arts Success

Congratulations to Kinross Wolaroi alumni, Niamh Webster (Class of 2024) and Oscar McLaughlin (Class of 2023), who were recently accepted into the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Niamh will study a Bachelor of Performing Arts and Oscar will study a Diploma of Acting. Both underwent significant and rigorous audition and callback processes. WAAPA is internationally recognised, and places are hotly contested with an audition success rate of 1% - 4%. WAAPA alumni include Hugh Jackman, Tim Minchin, Marcus Graham, Frances O’Connor and many other well-known Australian artists.

DUX OF 2024 WILLIAM HASELER

I was young, I remember first learning to ride a bike, and I just couldn’t stay up. “Why, why, why, why, why do I keep falling over,” I thought to myself. After many attempts, of falling off and getting back on, over and over again, I ended up not falling off and I still have vivid memories of first riding a bike on our concrete driveway. I believe my bike riding journey has been reflected all throughout my life, and especially accentuated here at Kinross Wolaroi.

Coming to Kinross Wolaroi only last year has been a very unique journey for me, especially in boarding. Boarding has been a huge part of my success in school. Although sometimes it can be distracting having a single wall between my desk and Seinfeld playing in the common room, every part of the boarding community helps each other strive towards success. I just so happened to choose academics as one of my focuses. My Head of House, Mr Perrin, you are one the first people I met at school, and since that day you have left a lasting impact on me. Your support for all the boys in the house to achieve their goals, and personable, yet ethical, approach to situations is inspiring. I cannot really imagine being anywhere else except Wolaroi House for these past couple of years. So, shout out to all of the ‘Roi Boys for your support in my academic journey.

The foundation of my academic success, that has been nurtured by the boarding community, ultimately stems from my teachers; and I would definitely not be where I am today without them.

If you are ever lucky enough to have Mr Willis as your teacher, you will definitely have a memorable class. I will never forget your incredible intelligence and the fun chemistry lessons. A highlight of mine being just the general class chats, which is where I probably learnt the most. Or when you lit the sink on fire as well … that was pretty cool. Thank you for your support throughout these last two years and I wish you all the best with your new baby boy.

To Mrs Cole, I have loved having you as my maths teacher and have thoroughly enjoyed the hundreds of hours of maths that our class has endured together. You have helped me develop my love for maths and continuously pushed me to achieve great things.

Mr Adams, thank you for your support in economics throughout these last two years. Although you haven’t fully taught us how to escape the matrix, I have cherished the philosophical discussions with our class.

Mrs Vere, your genuine passion for everyone that you teach, and love for maths is inspiring, and I am extremely thankful to have you as a teacher. If you can imagine all of the emails I have sent throughout my schooling

career, now double it and add ten, that is how many maths questions I have sent to Mrs Vere; and I thank you for your support. Ironically, it is actually in my Extension 2 Maths classes where I have learnt the most about creativity. In life you will be faced with many problems and a huge amount of stress, but it is the way you deal with these things where you need to be creative. There is no one solution to anything, and problem solving in times of discomfort is an incredible skill that I think everyone should master.

One of the things I have taken from my schooling career is that you don’t have to be perfect. I for one have missed many hours of prep scrolling on Instagram or sitting in the common room. But, if you do the right thing most of the time, and genuinely work hard towards your passion, you will succeed. “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” - Marcus Aurelius. Just as a young me didn’t have to immediately know how to ride a bike, that I was thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking so hard about, no one should be expected to have all the answers.

To Mrs McCalman. Your tireless work for the school is recognised and deeply appreciated. It is impossible to put into words the awe I have for your insight into English and life itself. You have been critical in my success in English and have created an amazing class environment that I was always happy to come to. Mrs McCalman has an authentic interest in the people she teaches … and I thank you, whether you know it or not, for being a key role model in my schooling career and life itself.

Mr McLennan, you have been instrumental in my understanding of not only the Physics syllabus, but building of character. Being lucky enough to have you as both my physics teacher and rugby coach I have gained a valuable insight into both quantum mechanics and the most effective way to stop a one-hundred-and-twenty-threekilogram prop running flat out at you. Although I’m still not sure I fully mastered the rugby side of things, nevertheless I will always cherish your leadership and witty jokes. Your humble and warm approach to anyone you interact with is a trait that I notice and attempt to emulate. One thing I remember Mr McLennan has taught me is that if you travel close to the speed of light you can actually slow the ageing process, from this insight it is obvious Mr McLennan doesn’t actually use the theory he teaches.

For all the younger students I challenge you to become uncomfortable. The chances are, if you seek to do the hard thing in whatever discipline it is you choose, you will be doing more than ninety-nine percent of other people. Looking back, all of Mrs Lewis’ English slideshow quotes that received the eyerolls and groans of everyone in the Performance Theatre end up being true. “Hard work beats

talent when talent fails to work hard,” is a phrase that has echoed throughout my mind in my final year of schooling. During these final years of high school, regardless of if you are in Year 7, 11, or anywhere in between, you will make some of the most amazing memories, and all have so much time left, but it goes by in a flash, so enjoy it. To my parents. Mum and Dad, I will be forever grateful for the sacrifices you have made to provide me with the best education possible, sending me to boarding school, and everything that you have done for my sister Claudia and me. Driving me to and from Dubbo in the breaks and coming to support me in Orange for whatever reason, be it weekend sport, functions or things like this ceremony, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support throughout my life. I love you both.

I was asked the other day if I had any regrets as a Year 12 student, and I didn’t really know what to say. So, sitting in the boarding house that night I deliberated … and I think my biggest regret would be not talking to more people. Instead of thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking about things in your own head, you should talk to those around you, gain a genuine interest in the person, and always be kind. Because in the words of Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

JOSHUA LEUNG

CH Miller Prize for Dux of Junior School, Year 6

Joshua is an exemplary student whose conscientious approach to his studies sets a commendable standard for his peers. His dedication to mastering complex mathematical concepts is reflected in his consistently outstanding grades. Joshua is also an accomplished musician whose musical talents have enriched the School’s cultural activities, especially in his lead role as Rudy Grunch in the 2024 Junior School production. Joshua’s enthusiasm for science is evident in his active participation in various investigative activities. His positive influence extends beyond the classroom, creating a ripple effect that inspires his fellow students to strive for their best.

Cassandra is an eager participant in school life who interacts positively with peers and adults alike. She approaches her learning with maturity and enthusiasm, and this has led to a high level of success across all her subjects, achieving a Certificate for Outstanding Effort in All Subjects. She is an enthusiastic member of the Performing Arts, participating in the Orchestra, Chamber Strings, iStrings, Koristers and Dance.

Phoebe is a conscientious student who consistently goes above and beyond in her academic work and personal conduct. She has participated positively across many school activities. Her efforts in Music have included participation in the Orchestra, Senior School Concert Band, Senior School Musical Orchestra and the Woodwind ensemble. Phoebe also achieved Musicianship Class D this year. In addition, Phoebe was selected for the 1st Basketball team, along with selection for WAS and the O-League team.

Georgia’s positive attitude and commitment to both academics and co-curricular activities make her an exemplary role model for her peers. She has consistently demonstrated a focused, goal-driven approach to her studies and co-curricular pursuits, and her achievements reflect this dedication. Academically, Georgia set a challenging goal of averaging 90% in all subjects, a target she successfully achieved. In co-curricular pursuits, Georgia was a member of the Kinross Wolaroi School Crocs (2nd’s) and participated in Choir, Orchestra, Senior Concert Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Chamber Choir and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program, for which she is working to complete her Bronze Award.

Isabel has participated in the Chamber Choir, Con Brio Quartet, Orchestra, Senior School Musical Orchestra, Chamber Strings, Senior School Concert Band and Musicianship Class F, with the award of Music Honours. She has also participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards program. Her wide range of involvement demonstrates her versatility and commitment to personal growth beyond the classroom.
