PRESIDENTS REPORT

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Alan

Welcome to our winter edition of the Burst, what a good time to visit the Club and try the new winter menu or the daily specials from the Fireside Brasserie or the wide variety of delicious Asian meals at Poloy.

ANZAC Day was a great success, with the rain holding off and large crowds at the service and most came in for breakfast. Throughout the day, the members and their guests took advantage of the many different offerings at the Club including sausage sizzle, music and two up. CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the Management Team and the Club staff all worked very hard to ensure everyone had an enjoyable day.

The ladies of the Sub-Branch Auxiliary did a marvelous job serving the very welcome breakfast in the various areas of the Club including the scouts and guides in the marquee.

The Mother’s Day Breakfast promotion was once again extremely popular with many members and guests attending either breakfast, lunch or dinner at Fireside Brasserie or Poloy Restaurant. Note the club will be having a breakfast and lunch promotion for Father’s Day in September, I would suggest you book early to ensure you get a table as the Club was completely booked out for lunch on Mother’s Day.

The July ham raffle is Friday 18th July and the popular Christmas in July show on Saturday 19th July, check this edition of the Burst or the Club’s website for full details of this and the many promotions that are happening at Kingsgrove RSL Club.

I look forward to seeing you sometime soon at the Club.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

It is with pride and satisfaction that I acknowledge the huge success of ANZAC Day this year with hundreds of members with their families attending the morning service in Memorial Rest Park at the front of the Club, which was then followed by a complimentary breakfast in the Club.

There was a huge array of support from veterans, the public and a special mention to our sponsor clubs Bexley North Football Club, Hurstville United JRLFC and St George Dragons JRLFC who joined the march along with the scouts and guides behind our veterans and their family members.

The March, Service and Breakfast were followed by a full day of activities in the Club including our very popular Two Up event in the marquee.

ANZAC Day is a significantly important day on our calendar and aligns with our Mission and Values to continue to respect and uphold the Returned Services League traditions and ensuring they are recgnised and observed.

My thanks to the Sub Branch and the Ladies of the Sub Branch Auxiliary for their organisation of the day and assistance in serving the breakfast. This combined with the tireless efforts of our staff ensured the day was a huge success, but it is you the members who make the day special.

The Club has recently completed an upgrade to the Gaming Lounge and Reception area air conditioning units, which has not only increased the comfort for our members and their guests but will further reduce our energy consumption with more energy efficient units. This capital improvement is inline with our ongoing strategy to improve the facilities of our Club for our members.

The Club will soon implement a new member Loyalty Reward System which will provide the Club the ability to deliver many new and exciting promotions and rewards. Stay tuned.

ANZAC DAY

Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch ANZAC Visits

In the lead-up to ANZAC Day and beyond, members of the Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch, along with the Campsie and Padstow Chapters, visit a range of preschools, primary and high schools, as well as nursing homes, to raise awareness about the significance of ANZAC Day.

At nursing homes, these visits serve as a heartfelt tribute to the residents—many of whom have lived lives closely connected to service and sacrifice. It's a moment to honour their contributions and remember their stories.

School visits are equally important, as they help instil the ANZAC spirit in younger generations, ensuring that the legacy of courage, mateship, and sacrifice continues to live on.

ANZAC DAY 2025

On 25th April 2025, Kingsgrove RSL Club brought the local community together for a moving and memorable commemoration to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. The morning began with a solemn March from Shaw Street that wound through Kingsgrove’s quiet streets and finished beside the Club, followed a heartfelt Dawn Service. Over 500 people gathered in the early morning light, standing shoulder to shoulder in quiet reflection as the Last Post echoed, followed by a minute’s silence and the laying of wreaths. The ceremony was deeply personal for many, with veterans, families, and local scout, guide and sporting groups all playing a part. After the service, a warm and welcoming breakfast was enjoyed inside the Club, giving attendees a chance to connect, share stories, and honour the ANZAC spirit together. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and unity within the Kingsgrove community.

ANZAC Legacy

In 2015, Kingsgrove RSL Club members Fergus and Denise Galbraith undertook a deeply personal and emotional journey to Anzac Cove in

Carrying with them the spirit of our Club and its members, Fergus and Denise laid a commemorative plaque at this sacred site—on behalf of all at Kingsgrove RSL Club—as a symbol of our enduring respect, gratitude, and remembrance for those who served and sacrificed. Recently, Denise generously shared poignant images from their visit— powerful reminders of the courage, mateship, and legacy that define the ANZAC spirit. Their journey stands as a moving tribute to those who gave everything, and a reminder that their stories live on in the hearts of future generations.

IN THE COMMUNITY

REMOVALS FOR HOPE

Kingsgrove RSL Club and 6 other Bayside Council local clubs donated $99,925 to Removals for Hope

Removals for Hope is a social enterprise that provides removal and storage services to people in "at risk categories" for better long-term prospects. Some of these people are: receiving government benefits, receiving case management, experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, coming out of incarceration, and experiencing domestic violence.

Jenny Newman from Removals for Hope said “The funding has helped us to purchase a larger van to help people move from unsafe, unstable conditions to more secure accommodations without the additional larger van, it would be difficult to meet the demands of the community”

THE LEILA ROSE FOUNDATION

Kingsgrove RSL Club was able to completely fund the Leila Rose Foundation’s project to provide Crisis support for vulnerable Australian families with children suffering from rare childhood cancers.

The Leila Rose Foundation offers support and guidance to families when faced with the painful reality that little may be known about the cancer affecting their child. With possibly no known cure available, the Foundation assists families to ensure they have a complete understanding of their child's cancer, the treatment process and available treatment options so they are empowered to make informed choices about their child's health.

Alasdair Robertson from The Leila Rose Foundation said “The Grant from The Kingsgrove RSL has enabled The Leila Rose Foundation to directly support one of our families immediately proximal to the Club. We support by providing $2,500 a year for 2 years to assist with day-today expenses, as parents who have a child suffering from a rare cancer almost always have to give up work for at least one parent to care for their child. We also provide a dedicated Family Support Nurse to liaise and assist with queries and treatments / appointments. The child Kingsgrove RSL are supporting is 2.5 years old and suffering from a rare cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma and being treated at Randwick Children’s Hospital. She has had 9 cycles of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The Kingsgrove RSL and The Club Grants scheme is a huge benefit to the local community and this family”

KINGSGROVE RSL CLUB COMMUNITY GROUP

The Kingsgrove RSL Club Community Group recently brought smiles and Easter cheer to local nursing homes, including Casa Mia, Fairmont, Estia, and Southhaven. Volunteers visited the residents with baskets of Easter eggs, spreading joy and warmth throughout the facilities. This heartfelt gesture was a simple but meaningful way to connect with the community and brighten the holiday season for those in aged care.

RIZEUP

Kingsgrove RSL provided funding to RizeUp for their project to provide Safe homes, brighter futures, for Bayside families, including 8+ children, escaping domestic and family violence.

This project addresses the urgent need of 4 women and 8+ children escaping domestic violence in Bayside. RizeUp selects and transports personalized, comprehensive furnishings, turning empty houses into violence-free homes. Victim-survivors will feel safe and supported in their trauma recovery journey.

Katherine Arden from Rize up stated “Imagine bravely fleeing violence only to find you and your children sleeping ‘rough’ in an unfurnished house, without the means to cook a meal or tuck your children into bed. After leaving temporary crisis accommodation, many families escaping domestic and family violence are unable to afford even basic furnishings for their empty house and are forced to choose between poverty and unliveable conditions or returning to the violent situation out of financial necessity.

Kingsgrove RSL's support helped RizeUp to fully furnish four homes for local families. We provided home appliances, beds, linen, toys, and comprehensive furnishings tailored to each family's needs, creating violence-free havens for four women and their eight children. RizeUp community volunteers wrangled flat packs, made beds, and arranged décor so victim-survivors could feel safe and supported. Free of financial burden, they can reengage with education and community activities. Together, RizeUp and Kingsgrove RSL prevented families from facing the terrible choice of violence or homelessness.

“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” - Helen Keller

SIBELLA SMASHES HALF MARATHON IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH

On Sunday, 4th May, Sibella successfully completed a half marathon, running 21.1 kilometres in support of the Black Dog Institute. With determination, heart, and a strong stride, she crossed the finish line not just as a runner, but as an advocate for mental health awareness.

The event marked a meaningful milestone for Sibella, who dedicated her run to raising both funds and awareness for the Black Dog Institute — a leading Australian organisation committed to mental health research, education, and support. Her efforts aimed to shine a light on the importance of mental well-being and the need to break down the stigma that still surrounds it.

Through her campaign, Sibella raised $1,609 and inspired friends, family, and community members to join the conversation about mental health.

“On Sunday 4th of May I completed my first ever half marathon at a distance of 21.1kms. Despite my injured knee I completed it in 2hrs and 13 minutes. The donations from Kingsgrove RSL and the patrons meant so much to me as it supported a cause very close to my heart! I am forever grateful for the love and support I received in the lead up to my race by the community. I wouldn’t have been able to reach my target goal without them” - Sibella

Sibella’s half marathon wasn’t just a personal achievement — it was a powerful step toward greater awareness and support for those affected by mental illness.

JESS, BRENDON & ZOE GO BALD FOR A BEAUTIFUL CAUSE

On Friday, 23rd May 2025 Jess, Brendon & Zoe took a brave leap — and lost their locks — as part of this year’s World’s Greatest Shave, raising funds and awareness for the Leukemia Foundation.

With shining scalps and even brighter spirits, Jess, Brendon & Zoe proved that a bold cut can be a beautiful act of kindness. With all their hard work and dedication they raised $3204.

“The world’s greatest shave is an incredible cause. Losing hair is such a drastic change that so many of us don’t have the choice when diagnosed with leukaemia. Knowing that we had the ability to show our support and raise a heap of money in the process, all 3 of us didn’t hesitate to sign up! I have to give the biggest thank you to the Club, who when they heard what we were doing, organised everything! From the day, time and even Joe the barber. I don’t believe we would’ve reached our goal so easily if it weren’t for them. So thank you, to our directors, management, staff and our lovely patrons. The community feel on the night blew us away”

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Welcome to our midyear edition of the Burst, you can tell summer has finished with the cool weather and basically non-stop rain, the strange part is there is a large area of NSW that is in drought. Fortunately, the rain held off for ANZAC Day and we had a tremendous crowd at the service comprising of current and ex-service men and women and their families along with many hundreds of local families all commemorating this very special day.

The Sutherland Shire Silver Band led the march with the cadets from the 233 St George Cadet Unit who made up the Catafalque Party and Guard. The 4th Kingsgrove Scout Group and the West Bexley Girl Guides were there in good numbers. The Reverend Stephen Gilmour, Senior Minister at San Souci Anglican Church gave the ANZAC Day Address.

Thanks to Parade Marshall Phil Pollard, MC Peter Merlino and other Sub-Branch members who helped to make the march and service run smoothly.

Albert (Boss) Harihari laid a wreath on behalf of the New Zealand Ex-Service men and women and Councilor Liz Barlow on behalf of Bayside Council along with the scouts, guides and representatives of the local sporting clubs that the club supports. Club Director George Harris laid a wreath at the WW1 memorial.

WOEW Tristan Smith (RAN), who was attending his first ANZAC Day service at Kingsgrove read the ode.

A special mention and thanks to Paula Taylor who sang the New Zealand National Anthem in Māori and English and the Sing Australia Ashbury Choir who provided the vocal accompaniment for the hymns and the National Anthem.

The Kingsgrove RSL Auxiliary assisted in the smooth running of the morning by serving breakfast to all the attendees, with a full breakfast being provided to the Veterans, cadets, Band, and their families, egg and bacon rolls were provided to all other attendees

VP DAY

SUNDAY 10TH AUGUST 2025

10.45AM for the VP Day service at 11AM

at the service, with the scouts and guides catered for in the Marquee.

Club CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the management team and our great staff did an amazing job organizing and managing the whole day, which saw a very large number of members and their guests enjoy this special day at the Club. The Sub-Branch appreciates the close cooperation between the two organizations.

The Sub-Branch along with members from Padstow and Campsie Sub-Branches visited Pre-Schools, Primary and High Schools and Nursing Homes in the Kingsgrove, Padstow and Campsie areas to assist in their ANZAC Day Service, my thanks to all those who were part of this very busy group of Sub-Branch members.

Sunday 4th May was the date for our Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration Service, and for the first time in (3) years it did not rain, and we were able to hold the service in Memorial Park. The guest speaker was WOEW Tristan Smith who provided a very interesting address on the battle that changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Our next commemorative service is Korean Veterans Day 27th July, VP Day service is 10th August and Vietnam Veterans Day 18th August all commencing at 10.45 am, medals to be worn.

The next Sub-Branch meeting is 26th June, please come along and enjoy the comradery. Note the August General Meeting will be held on Sunday 24th August commencing at 11.00am, a meal and refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Sub Branch, Sub Branch Auxiliary Members & Partners Only

SUB BRANCH AUXILIARY

What a busy time for the Auxiliary these past few months. During April, members attended the Anzac Day Service at the Kokoda Walkway and laid a wreath on behalf of the Sub-Branch. During the Anzac period, the Auxiliary joined Sub-Branch members visiting schools and nursing homes providing Remembrance Services.

Prior to Anzac Day the ladies once again sold Anzac tokens at Bunnings Kingsgrove and $500 was raised for the RSL Veterans Care. Thanks to Bunnings for their ongoing support.

The Auxiliary conducted a Mother’s Day raffle raising $1,900.

It is pleasing to announce that the Auxiliary has donated $4,000

each to the following departments at NSW RSL - RSL NSW Sport & Recreation, RSL Scholarships – AVCAT, Integra Service Dogs Australia, The Younger Heroes. This donation of $16,000 raised by the Auxiliary is through the many raffles held over the past years with the Club members buying our raffle tickets. We thank you for your generous support.

The Auxiliary together with members of the Sub-Branch attended the King’s Birthday Morning Tea. A delightful morning was held, and the scones, jam and cream were delicious.

KINGSGROVE RSL COMMUNITY GROUP

The ladies in our group have had a busy year so far. In March we had a morning tea/ lunch for the nursing home residents at our Club where everyone goes home with a gift. We played bingo before and after lunch and had lucky door prizes for a man and a lady. They were given a blanket and cushion each and the gifts were very well received.

At Easter the Kingsgrove RSL Club Ltd bought Easter eggs for us to give to the nursing homes. The ladies came and packed up 432 lots of eggs, 3 into a bag, to give out to four nursing homes before Easter. The Easter eggs were appreciated by all who received them. The nursing homes who received them were Southhaven Aged Care, Casa Mia Aged Care, Estia Aged Care at Bexley and Fairmont Aged Care.

I would like to thank the members who donated wool and do projects for us for the nursing homes. It is very much appreciated. We are making good progress with our gifts for Christmas which the donations go towards. If you would like to join our group, leave your name and phone number at reception and we will get back to you.

VALE - MARGARET MCGREE

Since our last report we have had one of our ladies, Margaret McGree, pass away in February of this year. She was a very hard

worker in our group and at every meeting she would bring bags of goodies to us that she had knitted and crocheted. I am sure she was up day and night doing things for our group.

We would like to give our condolences to Margaret’s family and let them know, we appreciate all she did for our group and we are going to miss her, not just for her work but for her company as well. It is not the same with her gone. Thank you to the family for sharing Margaret with us.

We all enjoy these days and more people seem to want to participate in them.
