BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Alan Barnes OAM PRESIDENT

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Here we are at the middle of the year already and being winter what a good time to visit the Club and try the great meals from the winter menu at the Fireside Brasserie or Poloy Restaurant with their exciting Asian food.

The Club’s elections were held in March with Tas Aronis continuing as Senior Vice President and Michael Bougoukas Vice President both were unopposed, Michael will continue as Sports Administrator, Directors Bruce Geerin, George Harris, Peter Merlino and Phil Pollard were all re-elected, and Kate Gilbert was elected to the Board continuing the role she has done for the last (6) months after Heather Shepherd resigned. I’m looking forward to working with the Board during this very difficult time of high interest rates and an everincreasing cost of living. The Board will ensure that the Club continues to provide good value for money in all areas and make the Club the destination of choice for the members and their guests.

I would like to thank Louise Pettit and Brian Sawford for standing for election to the Board, I believe it shows a commitment by the members to be involved in the Board and the running of this great Club, as was seen by the voting results as it was a very close election.

The Club Directors and the Senior Management Team gave up their Sunday and Monday recently to attend a Strategic Planning Meeting held at Mittagong RSL to plan the short and long-term direction of the Club, this ensures that the Board and the Club Management are working together to achieve the Clubs strategic goals.

ANZAC Day was a great success, with a fine day and very large crowds at the service, breakfast and throughout the Club during the day, the members and their guests took advantage of all the Club was offering on this special day with sausage sizzle, music etc. CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the Management Team and the Club staff ensured everyone had an enjoyable day.

Thanks to the ladies of the Sub-Branch Auxiliary who did a marvelous job by assisting serving the very welcome breakfast in the various areas of the Club not forgetting the scouts and guides in the marquee, thanks ladies.

The Mother’s Day Breakfast promotion was once again extremely popular with many members and guests attending either the breakfast, lunch or dinner at Fireside Brasserie or Poloy. Note the Club will be having a breakfast and lunch promotion for Father’s Day in September, I would suggest you book early to ensure you get a table.

The July ham raffle is on 19th July and of course the popular Christmas in July show on the 20th, check this edition of the Burst or the Club’s website for full details of this and the many other promotions that are happening at your Club.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club sometime soon.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

In March the Club Annual General Meeting was held and the Club Election results were presented and I wish to thank all the members who nominated and congratulate the elected Directors.

The new Board of Directors are currently working with management on reviewing our Strategic Plan with setting our goals and objectives for the next two years and beyond.

Once again ANZAC Day was a huge success with hundreds of members and patrons attending the march and service followed by a breakfast back in the Club. This is a significantly important day on our calendar and I sincerely thank all who attended.

The March, Service and Breakfast was followed by a full day of activities in the Club including our very popular Two Up event in the marquee.

My thanks to the Sub Branch and the Ladies of the Sub Branch Auxiliary for their organisation of the day and assistance in serving the breakfast. This combined with the tireless efforts of our staff ensured the day was a huge success.

As we go to press with this edition the cold winter weather has set in and I can only recommend you visit your Club to take advantage of the winter warming meals at Fireside and Poloy whilst dining in warm air-conditioned comfort.

We also have a lot of entertainment and promotional events occurring in the upcoming months.

ANZAC DAY

WE SHALL KEEP THE FAITH

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,

Sleep sweet - to rise anew!

We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died.

We cherish, too, the poppy red That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red

Of the flower that blooms above the dead In Flanders Fields.

And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead.

Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields.

WERE ROSS AND RACHEL REALLY ON A BREAK?

SUB-BRANCH PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, you can definitely tell that winter has arrived with the cold weather plus the rain, we were very lucky with ANZAC Day as it was a beautiful sunny day and being school holidays we had a very large turnout of current serving defence force representatives with ex-service men and women for the march, with the local scouts and guides groups and large turnout of family members at the service and in the Club for breakfast.

The Sutherland Shire Silver Band led the march and supported the service as did the cadets from the 233 St George Cadet Unit who made up the Catafalque Party and Guard. The 4th Kingsgrove Scout Group and the West Bexley Guide Group were there in good numbers. The Reverend Stephen Gilmore, Senior Minister at the San Souci Anglican Church gave the ANZAC Day Address.

Thanks to Parade Marshall Phil Pollard who turned out in his uniform, good to see it still fits and MC Peter Merlino both helped to make the march and service run smoothly. Councilor Joe Awada Deputy Mayo and Councilor Liz Barlow laid a wreath on behalf of Bayside Council, as did Albert (Boss) Harihari on behalf of the New Zealand Ex-Service men and women, Inspector Marc Oliveri on behalf of the St George Police Area Command, Club Vice President Michael Bougoukas laid a wreath at the Clubs WW1 Memorial.

The Kingsgrove RSL Auxiliary were of great assistance in the smooth running of morning by serving breakfast to all the attendees, with a full breakfast being provided to the Veterans, cadets, Band, and their families and egg and bacon rolls were provided to all other attendees at the service and of course the scouts and guides were well catered for in the marquee.

The Club CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the management team and the Club staff did an amazing job organizing and managing the whole day, which saw a very large number of members and their guests enjoy this special day.

FISHING

This year the combined Kingsgrove, Padstow and Campsie SubBranches visited (34) pre-schools, Primary and High Schools and Nursing Homes in the various community areas to assist in their ANZAC Day Service, my thanks to all those members who came along.

Sunday 5th May was the date for our Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration Service, unfortunately due to wet weather for the third year in a row we had to hold the service in the car park. The guest speaker was WOMT Ray Scarlett who provided an interesting aspect on the battle that changed the course of the war in the Pacific. Despite the inclement weather we had a good roll up for the service and luncheon.

Our next commemoration service is Thursday 11th July commencing at 10.45 am, this is in recognition of all the service men and women who served in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) the Government has finally recognized their service with this being the first commemorative service and refreshments will be provided after the service, medals to be worn.

We will be also recognizing Korean Veterans Day Saturday 27th July with a wreath laying. VP Day will be commemorated on Sunday 11th August followed by a luncheon, Vietnam Veterans Day is Sunday 18th August.

The Sub-Branch representatives have attended FSMDC meetings at Lakemba and Padstow RSL, the next Kingsgrove Sub-Branch meeting is 26th of August, please come along and enjoy the comradery.

SPORTS ADMINISTRATOR

I would firstly like to start by saying fishing fishing fishing. We have organised a fishing charter for 28th September 2024.

There are limited seats so first in best dressed, if you’re interested, please leave your name with your badge number at the front desk or if you would like to leave me a text message with your name and number I will contact you. My number is 0414 972 023.

We are still looking at starting our fishing club so if you are interested or know of somebody that is interested, please let us know so we can continue this great sport in our club.

SNOOKER

Happy to report snooker is going well. Numbers are good and always happy for new people to join. They are looking at starting a social competition on Sundays, so if you’re looking to fill your Sundays up, please look at joining for some fun.

DARTS

Friday night social nights are going well, again always looking for more members to join the fun on a Friday evening, just after our

raffles. The Wednesday night competition has just finished and our number one team finished in the middle of the pack with our number two team making the semi finals, but unfortunately getting knocked out. Congratulations to all.

We also had an inter-club competition with Ingleburn, which was a great day had by all and Ingleburn walked away with the prize. We will get them next time later in the year.

GOLF

Yes, we are coming to the winter months and I’ve got to say there is nothing better than an early-morning brisk walk and a conversation with some fellow players. All Women, children, and members are more than welcome to join.

There was a trip away to Bowral, which eight members took advantage of and had a great time. Congratulations to Steve Hodson for winning the match play final on the same weekend. So, if you are considering it, please give it a go.

KINGSGROVE RSL SPORTING CLUBS

DARTS CLUB

If you are at a loss on Friday nights after the raffle at the Club come down and have a look at our darts night which starts from 7.30pm. You have to be a member of the main club to play and if you enjoy playing you can then join our darts club for $10.00 membership for the year. It costs $5.00 a week to play and you can receive many benefits throughout the year. We have fun nights once a month where a member has a chance at winning one of five prizes on the night.

Our B Grade teams played in the St. George & Sutherland Darts Association competition which finished in May. Unfortunately the teams did not win overall but had a good time during the competition. Our next competition starts in July so maybe we can do better next time, but most of all enjoy your darts.

An interclub competition was held at our club in June 2024 with Ingleburn RSL. A good day was had by all and Ingleburn won the day. The darts club would like to thank the club for providing the morning tea on the day and James from Poloy for looking after us on the day. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Our next meeting with Ingleburn will be at their club in September.

We have our Championships coming up at end of July and beginning of August. Our heats will be played in July and the finals will be in August.

We have open championship, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles. We will soon be taking names for this event.

If you would like to join us come down on Friday nights and introduce yourself to one of us. ENJOY

SUB BRANCH AUXILIARY

The Auxiliary has just completed the Mother’s Day raffle, successfully raising over $2,100. Funds will be donated to Defense Care. Winners were Patty Rodriguez, Martha Viewey, Joe Lovisolo, Grazia Passareth, Menio Belogiannis, Violet Bozic and Poppy. Many thanks to the Club’s staff and to Sarah for her support in preparing and displaying the prizes.

Auxiliary ladies attended the Anzac Day service at the Kokoda Walkway Memorial Track on Saturday 20th April. Sub-Branch members Phil Pollard and Robert Talbott laid a wreath on behalf of the Sub-Branch. Once again, a most impressive service.

On the weekend prior to Anzac Day, the ladies sold Anzac Tokens at Bunnings Kingsgrove. An approximate total of $520 was raised and the ladies were delighted with the result as it was

a first for the Auxiliary. Many thanks to Bunnings for their support in allowing us to conduct this important part of Anzac Day.

On Anzac Day the ladies assisted with serving of food after the Anzac ceremony. A busy morning but one that is most enjoyable.

On the Monday of the long weekend, Sub-Branch and Auxiliary members attend the Club’s Kings Birthday morning tea. It was great to see many members attending and enjoying the fare that was offered.

TAKE CARE AND THANK YOU.

YVONNE TALBOTT AUXILIARY COORDINATOR

KINGSGROVE RSL COMMUNITY GROUP

The ladies of the group have been very busy since our last report. We are all knitting or crocheting for the nursing homes for Christmas plus doing orders for football gear. Many cushions, scarfs, hats and blankets have been done for the orders.

We held a morning tea/lunch for the nursing homes in March and all attending received a gift and enjoyed their day. Bingo went down well and everyone winning received a prize. There was a lucky door prize for a man and lady and the recipients were very grateful for the prizes they had won.

Southhaven Aged Care invited us to another morning tea at their centre at Padstow in May and invited residents from Casa Mia Aged Care as well. We enjoyed meeting the residents and the morning tea was fabulous. We exchanged ideas on knitting and gifts and we all learnt something new.

Thank you to all members who are knitting, crocheting or making donations to our group. It is very much appreciated.

If you would like to join our group, please leave your name and phone number at reception and we will get back to you. We meet in the Club every two months.
