Support for the Killarney Coffee Cup project has fallen, raising questions about how the scheme can continue without help from the Government.

Recent figures from IBAL, published this week, (see below) show that a number of businesses are no longer taking part.

Both Irish Business Against Litter and Killarney Chamber of Commerce say a national levy on disposable coffee cups is now needed. They want a charge similar to the plastic bag levy to encourage customers to use reusable cups.

The Coffee Cup project was started in July 2023 with the aim of making Killarney the first town in Ireland to be free of single-use coffee cups.

At the launch, 25 independent coffee shops and 21 hotels agreed to stop giving drinks in throwaway containers.

Under the scheme, anyone buying a takeaway coffee must bring their own cup or pay a €2 deposit for a reusable cup.

The deposit is returned when the cup is brought back to any business in the network. Organisers hoped to remove more than one million cups a year from local waste systems.

The project followed complaints from residents and visitors that coffee cups were being found at lakes, car parks and walking trails.

Clean-ups in the national park reported that the cups were one of the most common items collected.

A Government ‘latte levy’ of 20 cent per cup had been promised but has still not been introduced.

Chamber President Johnny McGuire said this delay has made it hard for small operators to stay involved.

Mr McGuire recently met An Taoiseach Micheál Martin to discuss the problem and to press for the levy.

He said the Taoiseach listened carefully,

but no date was given for action.

The chamber has also spoken to local TDs, Finance Minister Jack Chambers and Kerry County Council CEO Fearghal Reidy, who has expressed support.

The chamber insists the project is not finished. It hopes other towns will copy the Killarney model if a levy is brought in.

IBAL spokesperson Conor Hogan said the data shows that Coffee cups remained

one of the most commonly found forms of litter and was evident in one fifth of all sites surveyed.

“A real disappointment in a generally positive year has been the likely collapse of reusable coffee cup schemes in towns such as Killarney,” said Mr Horgan.

“It is apparent that such schemes will only work with statutory backing. As our data today bears out, without Government

intervention coffee cups will remain an unsightly and entirely unnecessary blot on the landscape across our towns. The prevarication from Government on the issue is striking, a levy was promised all of four years ago ,and sends out a worrying signal. Weaning ourselves off single-use coffee cups should not be such a big deal.”

Killarney’s great start to the new year Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has said the achievement of the town retaining its place in the top 10 in the fiercely competitive Irish Business Against Litter League is a wonderful tonic at the start of the new year.

There has been a warm welcome for the fact that the town is once again deemed to be cleaner than European norms and

it is in seventh place out of 40 towns and cities surveyed.

The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: “Another superb showing for Killarney with eight sites surveyed getting the top litter grade.”

Chamber said it was particularly gratifying that the town centre streets – including Main Street – received the highest possible grade despite the huge footfall and the thousands of people passing

through every day.

“Great credit is due to Killarney Municipal District Council and its dedicated outdoor crew who work with such dedication, passion and purpose to ensure the town is presented at its best at all times,” said Chamber President Johnny McGuire.

“The council is certainly setting an example for us all to follow and, combined with the work of tidy towns volunteers,

those spearheading the Killarney Looking Good project and others, it is only a matter of time before Killarney is back in the number one slot in the Business Against Littler League,” he added.

The Chamber said fact that eight of the 10 local sites inspected received the top A grade and it is hoped that concerns raised regarding the JYSK car park and Rock Road will be addressed as a matter of priority.

Junior Brother to Tributes paid to Rathmore make Mike the Pies man who died tragically debut this May Tributes have been paid to Rathmore man Brian Cronin, a father of two, who died tragically in a car accident last Saturday.

Kilcummin musician Junior Brother is set to play Mike the Pies for the first time when he takes to the stage at the popular Listowel venue on May 21.

The local artist has built a strong reputation on the Irish folk and alternative scene and released his third album, The End, last September. The record followed a steady rise in profile since the release of his debut album Pull The Right Rope, which was nominated for the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year.

Junior Brother also picked up two nominations at the 2019 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards, where he was shortlisted for

Best Folk Album and Best Emerging Folk Act. His distinctive songwriting and live performances have since seen him share stages with a range of well-known acts, including The Proclaimers and Glen Hansard. Hansard later invited the Kilcummin man to join him on a tour of the east coast of the United States.

Tickets for the show are priced at €20 and are available through the Mike the Pies website.

He passed away following a crash on L3013 at Knockdooragh, Headford.

Mr Cronin, who was from Rathmore and living in Knocknagree, was remembered as a doting father, a gifted welder, and a family man.

His funeral Mass was held in St Joseph’s Church Rathmore on Wednesday, with his burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Fr Pat O’Donnell, the celebrant, paid tribute to Mr Cronin, highlighting the deep love he shared with his family.

“He was blessed to have a family that loved him, blessed with the love of Jennifer, and he doted on his children,” he said.

Fr Pat noted that Brian’s family and friends will now recall events that may have seemed insignificant at the time but will now take on a new importance as they remember their partner, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague.

At the beginning of the Mass, symbols were brought to the altar, each reflecting an aspect of Brian’s life. These included a photograph from his family’s annual visit to Santa, welding rods representing his

talent for welding and the pride he took in his work, a mobile phone representing his sense of humour, safety glasses he was known for forgetting to wear, and a slate from the roof of his home, symbolising his hard work and vision for his family’s future.

Brian is survived by his beloved partner Jennifer, his adored children Fia and Eve, parents Michael and Imelda, his sisters Michelle and Edel, brother Pádraig nieces and nephew, as well as his wide circle of neighbours and friends.

New Year pool tournament tops €35,000 for charity The final of the Denis Michael Dennehy Memorial Pool Tournament took place in the Corner Bar, Barraduff, on New Year’s Day, bringing another successful Christmas fundraiser to a close.

The annual tournament has been held every year since 2011 and has now raised a total of €36,500 for local charities.

retained his title after a closely fought final frame victory over fellow Glenflesk player Alan McSweeney. The Border Boys provided musical entertainment on the day, followed by prize presentations and a raffle supported by generous donations from local businesses and individuals.

A total of €3,260 was presented to the Killarney South Kerry Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association to support its Lourdes pilgrimage in September.

Crash results in road closures The Rathmore to Lissivigeen road was closed for approximately two hours on Wednesday evening following a two-car collision near the Ardaneanig junction close to the Torc Hotel.

The incident occurred at the height of the evening rush hour, causing significant traffic disruption in the wider Killarney

area, including knock-on delays on the N22. Motorists were diverted via the Upper Ardaneanig Road and past Ryan’s Nurseries while emergency services attended the scene.

Both vehicles involved sustained significant damage, however no injuries were reported. The road was reopened shortly after 6pm and traffic conditions gradually returned to normal.

An inter-county football match will be staged on club grounds this weekend in a move that is unusual

by Kerry standards, as Kerry face Waterford in the Munster McGrath Cup at the newly renamed Dr Crokes Park.

The game, with a 2.00pm throw-in on Sunday, January 11, will be Kerry’s first home outing since last July’s All-Ireland final victory and marks the first senior inter-county fixture at the rebranded Dr Crokes venue.

The All Ireland champions began their

McGrath Cup campaign with a 0-16 to 0-14 win over Clare on Tuesday night, fielding a very experimental side due to injuries, retirements and player availability.

Manager Jack O’Connor has used the competition to give opportunities to fringe and younger players, including Tomas Kennedy, who impressed at full forward.

With several senior players still unavailable, Kerry are focused on building depth ahead of the 2026 National League, which begins at home to Roscommon on January 25. Sunday’s game offers another chance for local club players to stake a claim as Kerry begin the long road from Dr Crokes Park with hopes of returning to Croke Park later in the year.

Cinema-goers in Killarney will have the chance to see local star Jessie Buckley on the big screen from this Friday when her latest film Hamnet opens at Cinema Killarney on East Avenue.

The release comes amid major international attention for the Killarney-born actress, who is at the centre of awards season buzz following her performance in the film.

Buckley, 36, recently won Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica for her role and is widely tipped for further honours as the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Oscars approach.

Directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, Hamnet is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel and tells the story behind the creation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Rather than focusing on the playwright himself, the film centres on his wife Agnes, played by Buckley, and the impact of personal loss on their family. Paul Mescal co-stars as William Shakespeare.

New comedy play by Killarney Theatre Company A new comedy play by Glengariff playwright Ray O’Sullivan will come to Killarney next month as part of a regional tour.

Robbed! will be staged at the Gleneagle Club on Saturday, February 7, at 8.30pm, presented by the Killarney Theatre Company. The production is the group’s fifth in a popular series of homegrown plays and follows the success of The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes, A Papal Blessing, Weight Watching and Stones.

The play centres on a failed GAA player who finds himself caught in a series of misunderstandings involving relationships, bingo balls and a robbery that quickly spirals out of control. As events unfold, nothing goes to plan and the situation descends into chaos.

Rehearsals have been ongoing since

October and the cast includes Ray O’Sullivan himself alongside Rosie Healy and DB O’Connor. Robbed! is O’Sullivan’s fifth full-length play and is expected to attract strong audiences across the tour.

Local talent Orna Cleary O’Shea takes lead role in 'All Shook Up' Residents of Killarney will recognise many familiar faces when Killarney Musical Society stages All Shook Up on February 10, 11 and 12 in the Gleneagle Arena.

Search dogs begin specialist training on lakes Training for Ireland’s first dedicated Cadaver Water Search Dog Programme officially commenced on the Lakes of Killarney this week.

Following a report in the Killarney Advertiser on January 2 regarding the launch of the initiative, specialist teams and their canine counterparts are now active on the water.

The programme is a collaborative effort between Killarney Water Rescue Search and Recovery, Hounds and Helis, and Ireland’s Specialist Search and Rescue Dogs (ISSARD). The training exercises involve dogs learning to detect human remains underwater, a skill designed to significantly assist emergency services during missing person searches.

A series of photographs captured this week show the dogs and their handlers undergoing drills within Killarney

National Park. The exercises are conducted using both shoreline searches and boat-based operations to simulate real-life recovery scenarios where time is a critical factor.

Organiser Éadaoin O’Gorman expressed her gratitude for the local support of the volunteer-led project. The initiative aims to establish a permanent national capability for water-based canine searches, with Killarney serving as a primary training ground due to its unique lake environment.

The specialist canine teams will remain on the lakes periodically throughout the year as they work toward full certification for the 2026 national launch.

The society is marking its 40th anniversary year and is introducing the lead cast members in the weeks before opening night.

Orna Cleary O’Shea plays Mayor Matilda Hyde, a conservative town leader who opposes the arrival of rock and roll. The character tries to keep control as music changes life in the community. Mayor Hyde is protective of her son Dean, played by Jaidon Ward Barrett, and works with Sheriff Earl, played by Conor O’Leary, to maintain order.

Orna has performed with the society since its first production in 1985 and has appeared in every show.

She said she has built her life around the group. “I have been afforded countless unforgettable memories, fabulous friendships, laughter, loss and love, and above all moments that have shaped my life and will treasure forever,” she said.

Her past roles include Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Sally Smith in Me and My Girl, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes,

Laurie in Oklahoma, and Mrs Johnstone in ‘Blood Brothers’.

She received an AIMS Best Actress nomination for Oklahoma. In later years she played Maria, Duchess of Derreen in Titanic and Alice Beane in Titanic.

Orna said Killarney Musical Society has been more than theatre. “KMS has been far more than a stage to me, it has been part of my life, a second home filled with laughter, tears, lifelong friendships and memories of a lifetime,” she said.

Dr Crokes members gather for emotional ‘Lap of Light’ Dr Crokes’ Park was illuminated on December 27 as the club hosted its 2025 Lap of Light, a special event dedicated to celebrating the lives of deceased members.

The ceremony, which is a key Christmas event organised by the Dr Crokes’ Healthy Club committee, saw a massive turnout from the local community.

Families from across the town, particularly those who have suffered recent bereavements, gathered to remember their loved ones in a respectful and supportive environment.

Club vice-presidents Fr Tom Looney and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue set the tone for the evening. They were joined by 18-year-old club member and musician Saoirse O’Sullivan, who performed a moving rendition of ‘This Christmas’ by Oh Wonder.

The song’s focus on grief and missing loved ones during the festive season resonated deeply with those in attendance.

As twilight settled over the grounds, the crowd took to the pitch to complete ‘Darkness into Light’ laps.

Participants wore high-vis clothing and carried torches, candles, and mobile phones to create a trail of light around

the park.

The club’s signature black and amber colours were on full display, with many families even bringing along their dogs dressed in club-coloured coats.

The evening concluded with a social gathering in the clubhouse, where attendees enjoyed ‘Crokes’ Cuppas’, coffee, and conversation. The hospitality was coordinated by events organiser Maggie McAuliffe and her team of volunteers.

Adding to the community atmosphere, music for the social was provided by a quartet of seven-year-old Scór na nÓg musicians.

The event was made possible by the work of the Healthy Club members, including Colette Casey, Kathleen Fitzgerald, Risteárd Clancy, Éamonn Fitzgerald, Sinéad O’Mara, and Brendan O’Connor, who ensured the tradition of remembrance remains a vital part of the club’s Christmas event programme.

Rise in deer culled in National Park amid road safety concerns A total of 392 deer were culled in Killarney National Park during 2025, representing a 37% increase on the previous year.

According to new figures from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), the cull included 276 non-native sika deer and 116 native Killarney red deer.

The 2025 figures show a marked rise from 2024, when 286 deer were removed from the 10,000-hectare park.

The NPWS confirmed that the culling took place primarily during the official hunting season, with a specific focus on female deer to manage population growth.

The NPWS acknowledged an increase in deer numbers, citing restrictions on hunting during the Covid-19 pandemic as a contributing factor. A spokesperson noted that deer populations are highly mobile and their home ranges are not constrained by land ownership or park boundaries.

Management of the population is currently being guided by a national strategy under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. This involves Deer Management Units, managed by Farm Relief Services (FRS), which appoint coordinators to liaise between farmers and hunters to target problem areas across the county.

Traffic chaos as Macroom Bypass closed following icy collisions The N22 Macroom Bypass was closed in both directions on Tuesday after multiple collisions occurred during treacherous icy conditions.

The closure caused significant disruption for Kerry commuters, with traffic diverted back through the towns of Macroom and Ballyvourney for several hours.

One of the primary incidents involved two car transporter trucks carrying new 2026-registration vehicles destined for Kerry dealerships.

The collision occurred on an icy stretch of the road after one of the drivers was forced to take evasive action to avoid

a van that had spun out on the ice. The crash caused extensive damage to the central safety barrier and blocked the route.

The bypass remained closed while emergency services and recovery teams cleared the scene, eventually reopening on Tuesday evening.

During the closure, the resulting diversions created a level of gridlock in Macroom and Ballyvourney not seen since the bypass originally opened in 2023.

Met Éireann had previously issued a status yellow warning for low temperatures and ice, describing travel conditions as "treacherous."

Golf and Fishing Club introduces new team for 2026

Club members James Maher, Ciara Forde and Tim Kellytook part in the session, gaining valuable experience as they continue their journey toward competing for their black belts later this year. Both also trained alongside national-level judoka aiming to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, providing a rare insight into elite preparation.

The national squad opportunity follows a successful December for the club at the All-Ireland Championships, where Killar-

ney Judo returned with an impressive medal haul. Younger competitors led the way, securing three gold medals, two silvers and four bronzes across multiple age groups.

Developing home-grown talent remains a key priority for the club in 2026. Coaches say the focus will be on building confidence, competition experience and technical skill through increased participation in local and regional tournaments.

With clear pathways from grassroots to national level now firmly in place, Killarney Judo is looking forward to another successful year. The development of the new Derreen Sports Centre, including a dedicated judo dojo, is expected to further support training and help represent the town on the national stage.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club held its official ‘Driving In’ ceremony on Saturday to mark the beginning of the 2026 season under its newly elected leadership.

Local businessman Michéal O’Donoghue has taken over the role of Club President for the coming year.

A director of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection, Mr O’Donoghue was elected to the position at the club’s recent Annual General Meeting.

Joining him in the senior leadership team is incoming Club Captain Tomás Kelliher.

Kelliher is a long-standing member of the club and was a noted golfer in his youth.

The incoming Lady Captain for 2026 is Annette McNeice.

The club also introduced its new junior officers on Saturday. Luke McCann has been named Junior Boys Captain, and Aoife O’Sullivan will serve as Junior Girls Captain for the year ahead.

Postponed Pink Night to go ahead this Saturday The highly anticipated Pink Night fundraiser, which was postponed last weekend due to unforeseen circumstances, is now officially rescheduled to take place this Saturday night.

The event aims to raise vital funds for cancer support services and research.

Organisers are encouraging the local community to turn out in force to support the cause, noting that all tickets purchased for the original date remain valid for this Saturday.

The night will feature a range of entertainment, including live music and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses. Attendees are encouraged to

wear something pink to show their solidarity and support for the initiative.

“We are so proud to say this is our 20th year of "Pink nights" fundraising for very worthy local causes, this year is no different as our charity is Comfort for Chemo.

It promises to be a enjoyable night of fun for all, prizes for best dressed lady and

gent, “ said one of the event organisers.

"We are looking forward to a great night this Saturday and hope to raise as much money as possible for these essential services."

Paul O’Brien retains title at Gleneagle Squash Finals The Gleneagle Squash Club concluded its season with a series of competitive finals at the Gleneagle Leisure Centre.

Sponsored by Kerry Airport, the evening highlighted the significant progress of the club’s junior members, many of whom are now challenging senior players.

The night opened with a five-game ladies final battle between junior player Éabha Lynch and Mary O’Callaghan. Lynch took an early lead before O’Callaghan fought back to level the match.

However, Lynch held her nerve in the decider to win 3-2. In the second ladies' final, Paula McElligott defeated Joanne McCarthy 3-1. Despite a strong second game from the experienced McCarthy, McElligott’s pace secured her the victory.

DIVISION 4 AND 3 In Men’s Division 4, Alan Moriarty defeated Rob O’Sullivan 3-0. Moriarty controlled the game with strong power hitting to take the match in straight sets.

In Division 3, junior Noah Counihan continued his season-long winning streak with a 3-0 victory over John O’Sullivan, demonstrating the momentum he has built through several recent promotions.

Lissivigeen pupil Ella Moynihan wins county road safety award The artwork of a creative Killarney school pupil has been chosen to feature in next year's Kerry County Council Road Safety Calendar . Ella Moynihan, a sixth-class student at Lissivigeen National School, was selected as one of the winners in the council's annual road safety art competition.

She was recently presented with a trophy during a ceremony at the Council

Chambers in the Kerry County Council building. Her winning entry is featured on the council's 2026 calendar.

The competition received over 500 entries from primary school children across the county this year. According to the council, the high level of participation demonstrated the artistic talent of local students and their commitment to sharing the message of road safety.

I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

Kerry FC take unusual step with Killarney friendly Kerry FC took the unusual step of playing a pre-season friendly in Killarney during the week as they faced local club Killarney Celtic in a match organised to raise funds for Palliative Care.

It marked a rare appearance in the town for the county’s League of Ireland side and drew strong local interest.

Kerry started brightly and were ahead within the opening minutes, setting the tone for an open and competitive contest. Their early pressure was rewarded again in the 21st minute when Ballyduff

native Sean McGrath doubled the lead.

The game was played at a high tempo, with both sides creating chances and enjoying spells of possession.

Luke Doolan was central to Kerry’s play throughout the first half, linking defence and attack and providing energy in midfield. Kerry continued to threaten down both flanks, while Killarney Celtic responded with a series of corners and set pieces, delivered with pace into the penalty area.

Celtic reduced the deficit in the 25th minute with a well-taken free kick from just

outside the box, bringing the score back to 2–1 and lifting the home support. Kerry responded in the 36th minute with a powerful strike to restore their two-goal advantage, but Celtic continued to press and were rewarded again shortly after.

Debutant goalkeeper Harry Halwax produced an excellent save, with the ball coming back off the crossbar, but the rebound was turned in to make it 3–2.

Kerry looked unsettled for a brief spell as Celtic pushed forward, but just before half-time Doolan struck again with a composed finish to give Kerry a 4–2 lead at

the break.

The second half saw Kerry take greater control of the game, keeping possession well and limiting Celtic to crosses from wide areas. While the home side increased their physical approach, the match remained free of disciplinary issues. Kerry made several changes in the 78th minute, including the introduction of Daniel Okwute, who impressed last season.

Halwax was forced off through injury and replaced by Killorglin native Darragh Foley, who settled quickly. Kerry added a fifth goal late on to seal a 5–2 win, though Killarney Celtic continued to compete until the final whistle.

After the match, both Okwute and Foley spoke positively about the season ahead, expressing confidence in the squad and belief that Kerry FC can challenge any opponent.

Nora Leader from Cahirbarnagh, Rathmore, married Jerome O’Brien from Mallow recently in St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore.

Fr Pat O’Donnell officiated at the ceremony. The best man was Mark O’Brien and the groomsmen were Padraig O’Brien and Don Bourke. The bridesmaids were Siobhán Leader, assisted by Katie Leader and Áine Leader. The reception was held in the Rose Hotel in Tralee where family, neighbours and friends joined the celebrations.

The couple are now residing in Ballyclough, Mallow. Nora and Jermone got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2023, which was a very special day for the couple. “We knew we were going to get married in December,” said Nora, “The atmosphere and the decorations are always amazing in the hotel.” The buildup to their big day was very exciting, as they prepared to spend the rest of their lives together.

Reflecting on their wedding day, Nora said they were very lucky with the weather. “It was raining that morning,” she explained “But it dried up which meant we were able to go to the canal near Blennerville Windmill in Tralee to get our photos!”

Janusz captured the couple’s special moments throughout the day, while Brendan Reidy was their videographer.

Nora’s bridal hair was styled by Mairead Rahilly of Sophisticuts Newmarket, while her makeup was by Orla O'Connor.

Their wedding flowers were supplied by Wonderous Weddings and their cake was created by Cakes by Caroline Bell.

Autism Friendly Killarney has launched a new six-part video series showcasing how the town’s community, schools, event organisers and businesses are working together to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for autistic people.

Alongside the video series, Autism Friendly Killarney has also launched a new website, a central hub of information for Autistic people, their families and visitors to the town.

The video series, available on Autism Friendly Killarney’s Instagram and website, highlights simple yet powerful ways in which Killarney is adapting from sensory-friendly environments and visual supports to sensory accommodations, welcoming assistance dogs, staff training and event modifications demonstrating that small changes can make a big difference. It also features heartfelt insights from families who share how these initiatives have opened up new opportunities for family connection and community participation.

Tony Fleming from Ross Castle Boat Tours explains the changes they made to their boat trips to support people with autism. “We’ve made small changes that have had a big impact. Our boat is longer and wider for easier movement, and we have a neurodiverse box on board with earplugs and sunglasses. We also provide quiet and early-morning tours so guests can enjoy the lake at their own pace.

Seeing the smiles at the end of the trip is what it’s all about.”

Two videos offer personal insights, both from the perspective of a young boy with autism and a parent of a child with

autism.

Luke, a pupil from St Oliver’s National School, shares what makes him feel welcome and understood in his school and in the local town. Deirdre Prendergast, a parent of a boy with autism, reflects on the positive impact that a town that embraces neurodiversity with kindness and empathy has on her family.

She says, “It has made the world of difference to us as a family that so many events and businesses in Killarney are now autism-friendly. We are able to attend events that we would never have been able to before, such as the Christmas in Killarney parade. We were able to enjoy it together as there was a dedicated space with sensory items to keep him occupied and in case he had an overload. Because of the autism-friendly initiatives at events, my other son can now enjoy events with all the family, not just him and one parent. We can now enjoy things together as a family and it makes our lives so much easier.”

In February last year Killarney was awarded the Autism Friendly Town Award from AsIAm, just the third town in Ireland to

receive this accolade.

This is testament to the work of the voluntary autism-friendly group who have worked tirelessly to ensure that Killarney’s festivals and public spaces are accessible and sensory-friendly and that local businesses are adapting the way they work to accommodate people with autism.

Europe backs Denmark amid Greenland dispute There is a growing concern for Greenland’s future in Europe at present. Greenland is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark; however the United States wants control of the country.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement in support of Denmark amid US attempts to acquire Greenland. Fears are growing that US President Donald Trump might use mil-

itary force to seize the Arctic country if Denmark do not agree to sell. He has not ruled out the introduction of the US Military. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a forced takeover of Greenland would end the NATO alliance which was established after World War II. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has also lend support to Denmark, saying “Greenland is part of Denmark” and the EU is "rock solid behind Denmark in that regard".

He said that common sense needs to

prevail in this situation. President Trump first expressed interest in Greenland in 2019, during his first presidency. He believes it is needed for national security, saying that Russian and Chinese ships are nearby. It comes after a US military operation in Venezuela happened last weekend, sparking fears that the same could happen in Greenland. The US Secretary of State Mark Rubio will meet with Danish leaders next week to discuss the situation.

Love Island All Stars returns next week Love Island: All Stars is back for an extended third series on Virgin Media Two on January 12, 2026.

The series is hosted by Maya Jama and voiced by Iain Stirling. It comes as the 12th series, which was dubbed ‘TV gold’ by fans, was filled with jaw-dropping twists and turns.

Once again, fan-favourite Islanders from across 10 years of the show will return to the famous Villa in search of that much-wanted spark, while navigating the relationship dilemmas of bombshells, heads turning and unfinished business.

Returning to scorching South Africa, the third All Stars series will run for a bumper six weeks instead of five. Among the returnees is Series 7 Islander Millie Court, who recently broke up with ex-boyfriend Liam Reardon whom she won the show in 2021. Irish man Jack Keating, the son of Ronan Keating, is also returning to the show this year. He was only in the show four days in 2022 so this time around he is hoping to redeem himself. He said this time around it is a clean slate, and he will do the opposite of what he did last time.

He hopes to find a connection and bring a lot of energy and laughs to the Villa.

Gardaí issue appeal to reduce road deaths in 2026 As a community working together in 2026, we can again reduce the level of deaths on Irish roads.

That’s the advice of An Garda Síochána after they carried out a road traffic enforcement operation during the Christmas period. It ran from December 1 to January 5. The message comes after 190 people died on Irish roads in 2025. During that period, 26 fatalities occurred on Irish roads and over 70 serious collisions which left many people in life-threatening situations. During the operation, An Garda Síochána carried out nearly 10,000 checkpoints, both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing

checkpoints. 765 people were arrested during this period for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (56% primarily alcohol and 44% primarily drugs).

Nearly 26,500 drivers were detected for speeding offences by An Garda Síochána. Gardaí seized nearly 3,000 vehicles for a range of offences under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, 59% primarily for no insurance. In addition, nearly 1,700 Fixed Charge Notices were issued for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving and over 450 Fixed Charge Notices to vehicle users for non-wearing of seatbelts. The message to all drivers is to take care on roads, do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol and to always ensure road safety.

Gripping Irish murder mystery documentary to air next week The Showjumper Murder, a new documentary by Virgin Media, is set to air next Wednesday with the second episode to follow on January 21.

Irish Coast Guard responded to over 2700 incidents in 2025 The Irish Coast Guard responded to 2793 incidents last year, ranging from search and rescue operations to maritime casualty responses, as well as pollution control and preparedness activities.

44 Coast Guard Units were deployed 1187 times during the year. This included 933 helicopter missions including medical support for offshore island communities.

In total, 1941 individuals were provided life-saving assistance in 2025, either preventing loss of life or ensuring timely access to medical care.

The Irish Coast Guard reached a major milestone in its aviation capability, with the AW189 helicopters operated by Bristow Ireland commencing operations from bases in Shannon, Dublin and Sligo and Fixed Wing operations going live from Shannon in September 2025. This strategic expansion ensures that the IRCG has responded more effectively to

emergencies, ensuring rapid deployment and improved coverage across Ireland’s coastline and inland areas throughout 2025.

Ms Joanna Cullen is an Assistant Secretary General at the Department of Transport with responsibility at the Irish Coast Guard. She noted that 2025 was the year that truly tested the resilience and capability of the Irish Coast Guard.

She described how extreme weather conditions demanded rapid, coordinated responses. She said: “The successful transition of three bases and the introduction of Fixed Wing operations from Shannon have been game-changers, enabling us to respond faster and more effectively than ever before. These advancements, combined with the dedication of our volunteers and partners, ensured that communities across Ireland received the life-saving support they needed when it mattered most.”

The documentary is set to dive deep into the mysterious death of Northern Irish showjumper, Katie Simpson and the dark secrets that unravelled in its aftermath.

On August 3, 2020, Katie Simpson was found hanging from the staircase of her home in Co. Derry by her sister’s partner, Jonathan Cresswell. Initially ruled as suicide, suspicions quickly grew among family, friends, and medical staff. As Detective James Brannigan began to examine the case more closely, disturbing evidence came to light, revealing a story of coercive control, flawed policing, and

a relentless fight for justice.

Detective James Brannigan described it as the most challenging case of his 20year career in the PSNI. He claimed he faced intimidation from senior officers which drove him to find the truth as to what happened to Katie Simpson.

He said: “It was never about being right; it was about doing the right thing. I have now set up The Katie Trust to help other families in similar circumstances.”

With exclusive access to police, family, Katie’s boyfriend and friends, The Showjumper Murder uncovers the truth behind Katie’s tragic death and the outcome of the short-lived trial that gripped the country. Episode one explores the early investigation and the shocking revelations that eventually blew the case wide open.

College students urged to apply for J1 programme this summer The 2026 J1 Job Hub has been launched by USIT, Ireland’s leading provider of international work and travel programmes. Over 500 live roles are available across top US destinations, with hundreds more to follow.

The announcement follows a record summer that saw over 5,000 Irish students travel to the United States through the long-running J1 cultural exchange programme. Most spent their summers working in Chicago, San Diego, Boston and New York, while Newport, Rhode Island, emerged as a new favourite for 2025 participants.

USIT will host in-person hiring fairs at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin on January 14 and 15. This will give students the chance to meet leading US employ-

ers and secure interviews on the spot.

Among the highlights is a major San Diego employer offering over 100 seasonal roles, ensuring every student who books early is guaranteed an interview in their preferred location.

Lisa Collender, Head of Ireland and Advocacy at USIT, described the programme as a “fantastic opportunity” for Irish students to gain real-world experience, engage in a new culture, and make summer memories that go beyond the

academic setting. She said now is the time to act if you’re eyeing destinations like Chicago or San Diego for next summer.

USIT’s 2026 programme combines job placement, visa processing, and on-the-ground support to make the J1 experience structured and stress-free.

The team also manages US Embassy appointments and guides applicants through every stage of the visa process.

Beyond work experience, the J1 has a life-changing impact on young people.

A recent USIT survey found that 88% of participants improved their adaptability and resilience, 85% grew in confidence, and 82% developed stronger communication skills.

For many, the J1 experience marks a defining moment of independence, discovery and friendship.

25 years since O’Sullivan’s rally championship success Friends of Killarney garage owner Johnny O’Sullivan came together on January 3 to mark 25 years since he won the Southern 4 Rally Championship.

O’Sullivan won the Southern 4 regional title in 2000 driving a Ford Escort World Rally Car. He was the first local driver to use World Rally Championship technology in the county and the first Killarney

and District Motor Club member to win the Southern 4 championship.

Members of his service crew Denis Hickey, Pat Murphy and Pat Sheehan organised a surprise meeting at Charlie Foley’s Bar on New Street.

One of his three navigators from that season, Pat Cashman, also attended and shared memories of the championship year.

Carrig Cup gathering honours Mike Gaine A Christmas gathering in memory of Mike Gaine brought friends and rally competitors together at Kenmare Golf Club on January 3, where the first winners of the Carrig Cup were also recognised.

The new trophy was claimed by driver Tommy Randles and co-driver Darragh Lynch, making them the opening names on the cup.

The award will be competed for every six months on both the Killarney Historic Rally and the Rally of the Lakes.

Randles thanked the Gaine family for pre-

senting the trophy and the club members who supported the night.

He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people and KDMC club members that came to the Kenmare Golf club to the Christmas gathering of friends in memory of Mike Gaine and in recognition of the Carrig cup and myself and Darragh Lynch as the first winners it was a great night with rally stories of the past been told until early in the morning I would like to thank Mike Casey and his team of Kenmare golf course for the bar service and food on the night which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and I

would like to wish you all a very happy new year and hope 2026 will be a great year for everyone."

Co-driver Lynch added: "The fact that the cup will be won every six months for both the Historic Rally and the Rally of the Lakes means it will have an amazing history to it in a few short

1. O ’Sullivan’s fourth Rally of the Lakes win Muckross’ Noel O’Sullivan secured a landmark fourth consecutive victory in the Rally of the Lakes in May, co-driving for Callum Devine to dominate the county’s premier asphalt stage rally.

The Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 crew took the lead early on and never looked back, finishing 14 seconds clear of nearest rivals as the 2025 event delivered close

competition and big crowds. Local fans turned out in force across Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama, with O’Sullivan describing the achievement as “our Sam Maguire” after years of hard work on his home roads.

2. Former WRC star Kris Meeke at Killarney Historic Rally World Rally Championship ace Kris Meeke confirmed his entry for the 2025 Killarney Historic Rally late in the season, drawing major attention to the event.

Meeke competed in a BMW M3 E30, driving in tribute to the late Maurice Nagle and reconnecting with rallying in Kerry for the first time in many years.

The one-off appearance of the five-time WRC winner helped highlight the growing appeal of historic rallying in Ireland and boosted interest from both local fans and international competitors.

3. R ally Masters new event draws big crowds September saw the successful launch of Rally Masters Ireland at Killarney Racecourse, a demonstration event that

brought 50 historic and iconic rally cars to the town.

The sold-out event showcased legendary machinery from Group B, Group A and World Rally Car eras, including cars driven by rally greats and celebrated figures from the sport. Proceeds from the event benefited children’s charities, with support for the Jack & Jill Foundation and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

4. P aul Nagle’s FIA Safety Delegate appointment Killarney rallying legend Paul Nagle has been appointed as the FIA World Rally Championship’s Deputy Safety Delegate for the 2026 season.

The experienced co-driver transitions from his competitive career to a senior safety role within the WRC, bringing decades of rally experience to the governance and safety oversight of the championship.

The appointment reflects both Nagle’s deep knowledge of rallying and the increasing influence of Irish personnel in international motorsport operations.

5. B umblebee Supercar Run arrives in June June saw Killarney play host to a major motoring spectacle with the arrival of the Bumblebee 1000 charity supercar roadtrip. The three-day event brought over 100 high-performance cars through Kerry as part of the Talladega Nights run, showcasing exotic machinery from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and others on scenic routes that included stages in and around Killarney.

The event not only delighted car enthusiasts but also raised significant funds for the Little Blue Heroes charity.

Grey was the top selling new car colour last year for the tenth year running The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released their official new vehicle registrations statistics for 2025.

Total new car registrations for 2025 reached 124,954, representing a 3% increase on 2024.

Grey has retained the top selling colour title for the tenth year in succession, and the hatchback continues to be Irelands bestselling car body type.

Other year-end figures included: ​​​​​​​• New Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV)

registrations in 2025 saw an increase of 7%.

• New Heavy Commercial Vehicle registrations (HGV) decreased by 5.1%.

• Imported Used Cars increased by 16.6%.

• New electric cars increased by 35.1%.

Market share for 2025 sees Petrol accounting for 25.11%, Hybrid 22.48%,

Electric 18.89%, Diesel 17.09%, and Plug-In Hybrid 14.82%. Petrol remains the most popular engine type of choice for 2025, despite a decline in market share. Electric, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles have gained momentum, accounting for over 56% of the market.

Automatic transmissions account for 75.25% of the market share in 2025, while manual transmissions have declined to 24.73%.

The top selling new car for 2025 was the Hyundai Tucson.

Gallivan Financial move to new premises in Main Street Mall Gallivan Financial, based in Killarney since 1989, moved into a new purpose-built office in the Main Street Mall just before the break.

Director Tadhg Gallivan said the modern premises reflect the progress of the business and its plans for the years

DNG NATIONWIDE OFFICE OF THE YEAR

What’s in store for 2026?

According to the latest residential market review and outlook from leading property advisors DNG, house prices are set to continue rising this year, predicting low to mid-single digit increases.

The anticipated continued rise in values follows sustained increases recorded throughout 2025, with the DNG National Price Gauge (NPG) (excluding Dublin) recording an increase in the average price of a second hand home of 7.4% last year, down only marginally on the rate of growth witnessed in 2024 (+8.4%).

All regions of Ireland recorded robust growth in average residential property prices during 2025, with the DNG NPG recording the strongest rate of growth in the Mid-West region (+9.9%), followed by the Midlands region which saw prices increase by 9.4% on average. The Border and Mid-East regions saw the lowest rate of price growth outside Dublin at 6.3%.

At a national level excluding Dublin, the average price of a second-hand home recorded by the NPG is now €321,603 compared to €299,429 at the end of 2024.

With regard to investment properties, DNG’s analysis points to a worrying increase in the number of small/medium size landlords leaving the rental market in the second half of last year after the proposed rental sector reforms, due to come into effect this March, were announced.

DNG Research shows that in the first six months of 2025, 20% of second-hand sales in the capital were investors selling investment properties, but in the second half of last year this had risen to 27% of sales, as more investors decided to exit the market post the announcement of planned reforms in the sector.

An analysis of DNG buyers during the final three months 2025 reveals that first time buyers continued to dominate the second-hand market. Looking at the outlook for the year ahead DNG is forecasting that

prices will continue to rise in 2026 with the majority of any increase coming in the first half of the year. Overall, it expects prices in the capital to increase by 3-4% this year, with prices outside Dublin rising at a slightly faster single digit rate due to the continued lack of new homes available to purchase by private buyers, combined with robust demand underpinned by real wage growth, falling interest rates and the strong economic environment.

Commenting on the figures, DNG’s Director of Research Paul Murgatroyd said: “Across Dublin there was a welcome moderation in the rate of house price inflation last year compared to 2024. In the twelve months to December 2024 the DNG HPG recorded annual price growth of 9.2%, but by December last, the annual rate had almost halved to 5.2%. Outside the capital price appreciation was stronger last year at around 7.4% and a similar trend is anticipated in 2026.”

Auto-enrolment pension – My Future Fund What is Auto-enrolment?

Auto-enrolment is a new pension savings scheme for certain employees who are not paying into a pension. They will be automatically included in the scheme but can opt out after 6 months.

The introduction of the Auto-Enrolment Retirement Savings Scheme, called My Future Fund, will start from 1 January 2026. Under the scheme, the employee, employer, and Government all pay a certain amount into the employee’s pension fund.

A new public body, the National Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority, NAERSA, has been set up to administer the auto-enrolment scheme.

The scheme is supervised by the Pensions Authority.

Who will be automatically enrolled?

You will be automatically enrolled in the new pension scheme if you are an employee and: • You are aged between 23 and 60 • You are not currently part of a pension plan • You earn €20,000 or more per year If you previously contributed to a pension but now do not, and you meet the other conditions, you will be automatically enrolled.

If you earn less than €20,000 per year, or you are not aged between 23 and 60, you can choose to join the pension scheme if you are not already part of a pension plan.

Does my employer have to participate?

If your employer does not meet their

auto-enrolment obligations, they will be subject to penalties and possibly to prosecution. If they don’t make contributions on your behalf, they may be fined and have to make repayments with interest. However, there are no plans to force employers to contribute to personal pensions.

What happens if I already have a workplace pension?

You will not be enrolled in the new auto-enrolment scheme if you are paying into a workplace pension plan.

What happens if I change jobs after being enrolled?

If you change jobs after being automatically enrolled, you won’t need to change pension or join a new scheme.

You will remain a member of the auto-enrolment scheme on a ‘pot-follows-the-member’ basis. You won’t have to do anything, as the new National Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority will manage the change.

Is auto-enrolment better than my personal pension?

Whether auto-enrolment or your personal pension is better for you depends on your situation and circumstances.

You should review your personal pension and compare it with the benefits of auto-enrolment to see what works best for you.

Can I opt-out of (leave) the pension scheme?

After you are enrolled, you must stay in the pension scheme for at least 6 months. You can opt out after 6

Can I suspend my contributions?

You can also suspend (pause) your contributions at any time after the first 6 months. All contributions, including those from your employer and the State, will be suspended. All the existing contributions in your fund are kept there until you start making contributions again.

If you suspend your contributions, you must wait at least 12 months before you can start making contributions again.

What happens to my savings if I opt-out?

Contributions that are not refunded, including those made by your employer and the Government, stay in your savings pot and will continue to be invested.

If you stop working or move abroad at any time before retirement, you will stay enrolled, but you will not make additional contributions. Your existing savings will continue to be invested.

This means you can still access a pension pot at retirement.

If you leave the plan or suspend your

contributions, you will be automatically re-enrolled after 2 years if you are still eligible for the scheme. However, if you are making contributions to another pension plan through your employer's payroll, you will not be re-enrolled for that employment.

How much do I pay?

The amount you pay will be a set rate of your annual salary. Your employer will match your contributions, and the Government will contribute an additional amount. You cannot pay more or less than the set rate. You and your employer will pay 1.5% of your annual salary in the first year. This will increase to 6% by year 10.

Restricting short-term lets "Detrimental" to Tourism Industry, says Michael Cahill Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has warned that moves to restrict short-term lets will have a damaging effect on the local tourism economy.

Speaking this week, the Deputy argued that a diverse mix of accommodation is essential for the county’s success.

“We need Long and Short Term Lets, there’s no doubt about that. We need all sorts of accommodation types to fill the needs of the people. Restricting any type, for instance Short Term Lets, is a detrimental move and we should encourage more of all types,” said Deputy Cahill.

The Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Tourism claimed that because Kerry is the premier tourist county in Ireland, local business owners should have been consulted before any legislative changes were intro-

duced. He noted that the wide choice of accommodation – including hotels, guest houses, B&B's, and AirBnB's – is a primary reason visitors choose the area.

“Without this mix and flexibility, many people would stay away, despite our fabulous food and stunning scenery offerings,” he said. “As I stated previously, we need to be very careful that we do not ‘kill the Golden Goose’ by legislating Tourism Accommodation Providers out of the market.”

Addressing the housing crisis, Deputy Cahill stated his belief that the shortage can be solved through the reclamation of vacant and derelict premises and an increase in new planning permissions, rather than by targeting the tourism sector.

“I firmly believe that with the reclamation of Vacant & Derelict premises and a marked increase in new Planning Per-

missions, for both One Off Housing and Group Housing, which I have been constantly pushing for at the highest level of this Fianna Fáil led Government, with the expected investment in Constructed Wetlands in villages across the county, something that I have been consistently calling for since being elected a TD for Kerry 12 months ago, we will solve that shortage in the medium term,” he stated.

Deputy Cahill also criticized the new Short Term Letting Register managed

by Fáilte Ireland, stating it lacks universal support in Killarney.

“The fact that this new Register is to focus on just one type of letting, i.e. Short Term, has brought it into disrepute with those offering such a service. Many of them believe that it is discriminatory towards Short Term Letting and that they are being held responsible for the short-

age in Long Term lettings and the Housing Crisis,” he said.

The Rossbeigh-based TD highlighted that many in the AirBnB sector have no intention of moving into long-term letting.

“They have found their niche, they say, they pay their taxes and they feel they should not be forced out of business. Legitimate businesses should be allowed to carry on and other tactics need to be employed to encourage and attract people to offering Long Term Letting. We need not use a sledge hammer to crack a nut,” he added.

One year ago, on the 10th of January 2025, our world changed forever. Fabio (46 y.o.), the heart of our little family, passed away peacefully, after short illness, surrounded by love and grace. There are no words that can truly describe the pain of his absence, but there are many words of gratitude I wish to share for those who carried us through.

The Taddei family would like to sincerely thank all who sympathised with and supported them on their recent loss of Silvano.

To my dear Principal, friends and colleagues at Holy Cross Mercy School, thank you for organising the beautiful memorial Mass that honoured Fabio’s life with such care and respect.

Your support has held me up every day since, and I am forever grateful to be part of a community that embraces with such kindness.

Special thanks to Fr. Jim Lenihan and to all the medical and caring teams, indeed all the friends and family that have been there in any way for Silvano over the years.

To Monastery Primary School- to Principal Mrs. Brosnan, teacher Mr.Cronin and all staff who cared for Olo during the most painful time of his young life- thank you for being more than a school. You gave him safety, normality, and compassion when his world felt broken.

Following his funeral and cremation, Silvano will shortly be laid to rest in the family plot in his beloved Italy.

Geraldine’s First Anniversary Mass will be held on Saturday 10th January at 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

To every single person who brought food, sent mass cards, offered kind words, and helped with even the smallest tasks- your thoughtfulness carried us through the hardest days. I saw the best of humanity in each of you.

To Steven and Suzanne- you were our first friends when we arrived in Ireland 20 years ago, and you opened your own home and hearts to us. You have been with us from the beginning of our journey, and you remain our constant. There are no better friends we could have hoped for.

We are deeply grateful to Kevin’s amazing work colleagues in Aghadoe Heights Hotel where they kept in touch with him on a regular basis. This meant so much to Kevin.

A special mention to Fr. Danny Broderick and Deacon Conor Bradley for celebrating Kevin’s Requiem Mass and to Neily O’ Connor and Sean Treacy for the beautiful music and singing.

Heartfelt thanks to Listry G.A.A. Club, Listry Golf Society and Aghadoe Heights Hotel for the guards of honour provided. It was very moving to see so many sending Kevin off on his final journey.

We would also like to thank Flynn’s Undertakers for their kindness, professionalism and guidance at such a difficult time.

Reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry got the New Year off to a winning start as they defeated Clare by two points in their McGrath Cup opener on Tuesday night.

With the majority of last year’s starting line-up either being rested, recovering from injury or, in the case of the Dingle and An Ghaeltacht contingent, still on club duty, Jack O’Connor named a youthful panel for the trip to Clarecastle.

Goalkeeper Seán Broderick (John Mitchels), backs Enda O’Connor (Na Gaeil) and Charlie Keating (Dr Crokes), midfielder Liam Smith (Glenbeigh-Glencar), and forwards Thomas O’Donnell (Castlegregory), William Kirby (Austin Stacks), Cian O’Grady (Castlegregory) and Gearóid Hassett (Laune Rangers) were all handed starts. Tadhg Morley, Jason Foley, Mike Breen and Seán O’Brien added experience, with Year 2 players Cillian Trant, Darragh Lyne and Tomás Kennedy also included.

Clare, for their part, fielded a strong side with Dermot Coughlan and Eoin Cleary prominent as they pushed the Kingdom all the way.

Kerry led by six points at half-time (0-12 to 0-6) thanks, in part, to the accurate kicking of Kennedy, O’Grady and O’Donnell.

The Kingdom’s attacking output when playing into the wind in the second

half was less spectacular; they added just four points and missed some clear sights at goal, allowing their eager hosts to chip away at the deficit in the closing minutes.

A two-pointer by Coughlan made it a two-point game in stoppage time but that’s as close as the Banner could get.

Aaron Griffin’s last-ditch attempt from beyond the arc was blocked by Darragh O’Connor (Kenmare) and Kerry secured the victory and the points.

“We were down a lot of players,” Jack O’Connor told Clubber TV. “The team tonight was quite experimental but it was great that we had the few seasoned fellas like Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley and Mike Breen. That helps the other fellas around them. So, [we’re] happy enough.

These lads have come in and trained very well for the last four or five weeks.

That was a good win against a decent Clare team.”

O’Connor also confirmed that Mike Breen was withdrawn at half-time as a “precaution”.

Next up is a home fixture against Waterford at Dr Crokes GAA grounds on Sunday (2pm). Waterford lost to Clare by eight points in their Group A opener.

Another win for Kerry will secure their spot in the final, more than likely against Cork. The Rebels, who hammered Tipperary by 19 points on Tuesday, welcome Limerick to Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

The final is scheduled for next Saturday (January 17). The National League gets underway the following weekend with Kerry hosting Roscommon in Killarney on the Sunday (January 25).

9.01.2026 | By Adam Moynihan A new year brings fresh faces into the Kerry senior football team, and there is always excitement amongst supporters to see if any of the newcomers can make the grade.

It’s great that so many rookies are getting a shot but personally I’m more interested in and more hopeful for what the Year 2 boys can bring to the table this season.

It’s rare that a youngster comes straight into the senior set-up and makes an immediate impact (that’s what made David Clifford and, more recently, Cillian Burke so special). Last year Seán O’Brien and Dylan Geaney clearly benefitted from having a proper year under their belts, and they blossomed into important players as the season progressed.

This year Cillian Trant, Darragh Lyne and Tomás Kennedy will be hoping to follow suit. All three made their senior debuts in 2025 and all three have the potential to really break through and challenge the more established starters, and certainly the fringe players, in 2026. Charlie Keating is sort of in this category as well – he missed last season due to injury but he remained part of the panel, which to me suggests that the management team rate him highly.

I thought Lyne had a really solid game against Clare in the McGrath Cup opener on Tuesday. He has everything you want from a modern-day middle third player – size, athleticism, work rate and ball skills.

His selflessness makes him an effective link player/facilitator but he is also capable of driving through and scoring himself. In fact, you would sometimes like to see him do that more often. Year 2 players can make their mark queue as a Kerry forward.

As for Kennedy, it’s a good thing we’re not desperate for forwards at the moment because if we were, the hype around this guy would be a lot noisier.

The Rahillys man is pushing 6’4” with soft hands and an ability to kick off left and right. He was arguably the standout talent on show in Clarecastle, certainly in the first half when Kerry’s offensive efforts were more coherent.

Jack O’Connor compared him to Kieran Donaghy in his post-match interview and said Kerry’s new coach will be able to teach him the tricks of the trade. (Personally he reminds me a little of someone else, but it’s probably best not to burden him, or anyone, with that comparison.)

I was also impressed by Seán Broderick of John Mitchels in goal. His kickouts were on the money and although he slipped on a two-point free attempt, he steadied himself and knocked over a 45 soon after.

Enda O’Connor (brother of Diarmuid) looked tidy at corner back, Keating was comfortable on the wing, half forwards Thomas O’Donnell and Daniel Kirby kicked

some nice scores, and corner forward Cian O’Grady had a haul of 0-5 (two from play).

If you wanted to be hyper-critical, the All-Ireland champions should have killed the game off by being more clinical with their goal chances. In the end Clare were pushing for an equaliser and another ref might have penalised a Kerry defender for not handing the ball back cleanly on a Clare free out around the 65. I think it would have been harsh – it was one of those ones where the forward is trying to manufacture a messy handover – but Kerry shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.

Substitute Darragh O’Connor of Kenmare, who had given away the two-point free that Clare converted to make it 0-16 to 0-14, made amends with the last act of the game as he dived and blocked Aaron Griffin’s attempt from the edge of the arc. O’Connor is a good operator – I’ve been very impressed whenever I’ve seen

him at club level – and it was nice to see Trant and Lyne go over and congratulate him at the final whistle.

All in all it was a decent enough win against a strong Clare side featuring some of their best players. Eoin Cleary and Dermot Coughlan, in particular, were excellent.

Jack is likely to give some other youngsters/fringe players game time against Waterford on Sunday. That’s obviously a match they should be winning and then attention will turn to the final, with Cork the likely opponents.

The intercounty off-season was long, and the All-Ireland hangover was hard to shake off, but you wouldn’t be long getting back into the swing of things.

KAYLEIGH CRONIN

Eamonn Fitzgerald catches up with local footballer Kayleigh Cronin who is home for a break between her first and second seasons in the AFLW Fáilte isteach to the second week of 2026 as we look forward to another great year in all things sport. Where better to start than to interview an outstanding sports achiever, Killarney’s Kayleigh Cronin?

Kayleigh is a two-time LGFA All-Star and was Player of the Match when Kerry won the 2024 All-Ireland title, defeating Galway in the final.

It is the off-season for the AFL Women’s league (AFLW), the professional Australian Rules football competition for female players, but the local woman was preparing for an indoor workout in the Dr Crokes gym when I met her for a chat about her first season Down Under with the Adelaide Crows.

Welcome home, Kayleigh. Your first impressions after one season as a pro in the AFLW? Thank you, Eamonn. It was good, yeah.

I suppose maybe more different than I was expecting. The main thing was that the Adelaide Crows club was massively helpful in making sure that my transition was as seamless as possible and all the girls playing over there are lovely. I’ve really enjoyed the experience and, to be honest, I’m just looking forward to it a bit more now.

Are there more Irish girls with you in Adelaide?

There are four of us in total. Amy BoyleCarr from Donegal and the Kelly sisters, Niamh and Grace, who come from Mayo are there for me in the club.

Was it a tough decision to go to Australia?

Well, I had been tossing it around for a few years, but I was committed to Dr Crokes and to Kerry. We wanted to win the All-Ireland with Kerry, and we were convinced that we were good enough to go all the way to lift that cup in 2022.

When you're part of a Kerry team, not a successful one at that stage, you become more determined to stick with it and win.

It’s very, very hard to step away from that. But look, from the very start, my goal was to go to the AFLW at some stage in my career.

Loneliness is a big factor for professional players away from home, especially moving to Australia, which is so far away. Was it an issue for you?

To be honest, yes, at the start. Of course, you miss family and friends, but you’re too busy to be missing anyone once you get into the pattern of life as a full-time footballer. Some of the other Australian girls wouldn't even know about your connection with home, especially when you bounce in and say Kerry or Crokes won their game. Yippie. We Irish girls stayed up together watching the county and club games, you know, at three and four o'clock in the morning due to the time dif-

ference. We also followed the action on Twitter. You kind of wished sometimes that you could be here for the club and county that’s so far away.

You first hit the sports headlines across your teenage years in different competitions in athletics, including representing Ireland in discus. Then your LGFA career at club and county levels took off. What did you gain from those experiences that were helpful in adapting to the Australian game?

To be honest one of the biggest things for an easy transition is adapting to the physical nature of AFL. Because of my height and strength, I would be considered a key player in AFL, kind of like a full-forward, full-back or a tall midfielder. There's quite a bit of skill development involved in AFL. Stuff like your smaller players, the small backs and your running midfielders do a lot of quite fast work. It just comes naturally to them. I definitely spend a bit of time now picking up some skills that I don't really use here in Ireland. I think, to be honest, my main attribute, comes from the athletics, in terms of my speed, power, and explosiveness. I wouldn't be the fittest. I wouldn't be the best runner.

But strength, explosiveness and power, that’s what I brought over with me to the

AFL. What about the mental side of the new game?

I experienced the highs and lows of everything with Crokes and Kerry. Learning to take everything as it comes and not to panic were very important lessons.

Really knowing how to win, especially in a hectic finish when the outcome of the game is balanced on a knife edge. You learn not to panic in those situations.

That’s the big thing.

What is a typical day for you as a fulltime professional footballer?

I open with a bit of breakfast an hour or so before training. Then just get your rub and your strappings and stuff like that.

Be prepared. Then we have a team meeting explaining the training schedule and what's going to happen and what to get out of different drills. We head out onto the oval, and we typically spend about two hours out on the pitch. We come back up and get a bit of a light snack followed by a three-way rotation in the afternoon of gym, craft and education.

Then it’s time for recovery before heading home. One of the big things is the importance of rest.

Is that a key part as well?

Massively so. It's amazing all of the

scheduled recovery times. We have saunas and ice baths for recovery, just about everything you need to recover. You make sure you're getting whatever naps and all your normal sleeping, and eating as well. Rest is vital.

Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan trained Kerry teams to win the Sam Maguire eight times, and he was lightyears ahead in his thinking by emphasising the importance of rest after demanding training sessions.

Yes, absolutely. He was right; rest is vital for recovery.

In his time training Kerry, they had collective training only for two weeks in Killarney before the All-Ireland final.

Can you compare that with an amateur Kerry LGFA player who still has to do a day’s work but is professional in her commitment to their team?

I will say the professionalism of an amateur group, like the Kerry ladies, was second to none. For the time that we had together and what we put into that time was amazing. I won't lie, the difference in the AFLW is that you do have those full-on days and being together reaps rewards. With Kerry you have less time together, maybe three nights a week, whereas with the Crows we are togeth-

er nearly every day of the week. So with Kerry it's really important that when we are together, let's say, Wednesday and Friday nights for sessions of two or three hours that everybody is giving everything. Then it’s the trust between the group and the management that when you are on your own, your gym sessions and your planned exercises are being done. The work you do together is huge, but the work you do when no one is looking is nearly more important, Do you have any kind of a social life as a pro?

Very little, not like here. You do it together as a group, to be fair, but it's definitely a bit different to the social life in Ireland. There was no drink for about six or seven months while I was over there. I didn't know myself but look, as I say, when you're training as hard as you are and when the sessions are coming as frequently as they are recovery is key, so social life is very limited. You just want to make sure that when you are recovering, that it's relaxing.

Aiséirí and the west is awake | By Eamonn Fitzgerald

When Dingle were nine points down at half-time in their All-Ireland Club semi-final against Ballyboden of Dublin, they turned to their injured star man in a desperate attempt to salvage the game.

Enter Paul Geaney. The gap widened to 10 points (1-15 to 0-8) but then came the Lazarus-like resurrection (‘aiséirí’ as Gaeilge), spearheaded by Man of the Match Geaney. Just like the Poc ar Buile, he was the devil the parish priest spoke of, scoring 0-8 in total. He got them over the line in the Kerry county final along with fellow Kerry star Tom O’Sullivan, who scored 0-6 on Saturday last.

It was a nail-biting finish at the end of extra time as Dingle edged out Ballyboden 1-26 to 1-24 (AET). Now for the final on January 18.

In the curtain raiser at Páirc Uí Chaoímh, An Ghaeltacht snatched victory in

the Intermediate semi-final. They were trailing Sallins of Kildare by a point as the clock inched to 80 minutes in this absorbing ET game. Then the referee took centre stage by judging that Emmet Ralph was delaying the restart from a Gaeltacht swarm and brought the free forward the 50 metres. Éanna O’Conchúir opted to move the free to outside the arc instead of the safer option of an equalising point.

Just like the Barrs’ case in the Munster Senior final, Sallins saw their title hopes drift into oblivion with that two-pointer. The west is awake.

An Ghaeltacht will play Glenullin (Derry) in the final in Croke Park on Sunday (3.30pm).

In the Junior Club Championship semi-final, Ballymacelligott got a closer run than I expected but were well deserving of their 2-13 to 0-16 win over Grangelovin (Kildare). They face Clogher Éire Óg (Tyrone) in the final, also in Croke Park on Sunday (1.30pm).

Loyal Kerry fans to travel for free again in 2026 Kerry FC have confirmed that they will once again be running free supporters' buses to away matches in 2026, following the success of the initiative in 2025.

Kerry fans travelled the length and breadth of the country for free during the 2025 campaign, which led to large numbers shouting on the boys in green across all four corners of the island. The support was particularly evident when the club provided five free 52-seater coaches for the FAI Cup semi-final at Tallaght Stadium in October.

Having a record number of Kerry supporters on the road in 2025 was a huge milestone for the club, and the club are hopeful that an even higher number will avail of the free service again in 2026.

Colin Healy’s team will undertake a minimum of 18 away trips once again this

year, bringing the Kingdom supporters from Cork to Donegal and from Wexford to Longford.

“We are delighted to announce our free supporter bus service again for 2026,” Kerry FC CEO Billy Dennehy said. “It was fantastic to see the Kerry flags flying high up and down the country throughout 2025. We are well aware of the cost for supporters to travel up to 18 times across the season, so we hope that this initiative will once again help our supporters keep some money in their pocket, all while still being able to make the journey to shout on Colin Healy’s side.”

Supporters wishing to avail of the free buses will need to book a free ticket online via kerryfc.com/tickets. Sales will be advertised on the club’s social media channels in advance of the away games, and the buses will be subject to availability.

A great way to start the new year with a strong, disciplined performance from the lads up at Mounthawk Park this afternoon. We controlled the game well, moved the ball with confidence and showed real hunger and intensity throughout, while staying patient and composed in our play. U13 NATIONAL TROPHY: Killarney Athletic AFC 2-1 Kilfrush. Killarney Athletic Under 13s delivered a high-tempo, committed performance in their National Trophy clash against Kilfrush, setting the tone from the first whistle. Athletic played with real pace and intensity, throwing everything at their visitors and putting Kilfrush under constant pressure early on. That pressure was rewarded with a deserved breakthrough when Rian Reilly found the net, capping off a strong opening spell from the home side. Kilfrush responded well and showed their quality with a well-worked corner that brought them level, but Athletic showed great character to bounce straight back.

From another corner, Mark Clifford rattled the crossbar and John Hegerty reacted quickest to smash home the rebound, restoring Athletic’s lead. Athletic continued to work hard all over the pitch and fully deserved the victory on the day

against a very competitive and sporting Kilfrush side who never stopped battling.

A good win and into the next round for Killarney Athletic. Thanks to Kilfrush for a great game, the referee for his efforts, and all the supporters who backed the lads once again.

BOYS U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Celtic B 3-4 Killarney Athletic B. On a bitterly cold morning the boys travelled to our neighbours Celtic in a New Years cracker. Celtic started brightly and deservedly took the lead. Athletic began to take control and scored twice before the breakthrough great finishes by Jakub and Donncha.

Celtic battled back and got a deserved equaliser, but we took the lead again with another clinical finish by Jakub. A few missed chances to really put the game to bed allowed Celtic in for another equaliser. Thankfully after a great move Luke had us in front again and despite late Celtic pressure, we managed the claim the 3 points. Thanks to Celtic for a great game and to the referee for excellent officiating.

U13 BOYS DIVISION 2: Iveragh B 3 Killarney Athletic C 1. We travelled to Cahersiveen on Saturday to play Iveragh. The boys started well and took an early lead through a Rian Horgan penalty. Iveragh gradually grew into the game and despite some resolute defending from the boys, Iveragh drew level, 1-1 at half time. Iveragh dominated much of the second half, but the boys were excellent in defence, and it looked like the game might finish in a draw, but Iveragh managed to score 2 late goals, the game finishing 3-1 to Iveragh. Thank you to Iveragh for hosting, the referee, and all who travelled to support the boys.

U12 GIRLS: Tralee Dynamos 0-2 Athletic.

Away Day in Tralee. Athletic travelled to Tralee Dynamos on a beautiful but cold morning with blue skies and sunshining. Captain: Aoibheann Hegarty. A very tight and competitive opening half with both teams battling hard. Chances were limited and it remained 0–0 at half time Second Half: Athletic came out fighting and turned up the intensity! Huge performances were put in by every player, Athletic maintained a high level throughout and created lots of chance Goals: Carolena Kelly, Jessie Doolan A massive team effort with commitment, energy and determination shown by all. Thanks to Tralee Dynamos for a competitive and sporting game, and to the referee for officiating.

KDL CHAMPIONSHIP: Castlegregory Celtic 2-2 Killarney Celtic B. Eoghan Crowley, Oran O’Neill. In a hard-fought encounter Celtic claimed a share of the points. Celtic led 1-0 at the break but Castlegregory were level on 63 minutes.

Celtic regained the lead immediately, but Castlegregory came back again to level, and the sides had to settle for a draw.

Celtic B remain top of the division.

U15 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 1-1 St Brendan's Park. Cormac O'Sullivan. Celtic and Park played out a draw in this entertaining encounter.

U15 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic B 8-1 Ballyhar Dynamos. Luke Clifford 4, Cillian Scannell, Paul McGrath, Jack Clifford, Sean Doyle. Celtic B were clear cut winners of this Div 1 clash. Celtic were in control of the game and finished off good approach play with some excellent goals.

U13 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 2-1 Inter Kenmare. Dylan McCarthy, Maksym Opala. Celtic maintained their position at the top of the division after a hard-fought win over Inter Kenmare.

U13 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic B 3-4 Killarney Athletic. Illia Pomishchyk 2, Wojtek Ziglinski. Celtic B just came up short in this local derby played on a bitterly cold morning. Tralee Dyn 2-2 Killarney Celtic C. Eryk McGrath, Mark O'Sullivan. Celtic C shared the points with Tralee Dynamos after a fine contest.

KDL PREMIER WOMEN: Killarney Celtic 2- 0 Inter Kenmare. Lucy O'Sullivan, Cathy Harrison. Celtic came out on top of this tight contest. Celtic led 1-0 at the break after Cathy Harrison slotted home.

Celtic secured the points in the 2nd half when Lucy O'Sullivan finished to the net.

GIRLS U14 PREMIER: Fenit 3-4 Killarney Celtic. Leah Mannix 3, Niamh O'Leary.

Celtic continue to play themselves back into the title race after a hard-fought win in Fenit. Killarney Celtic extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Patsy Flaherty. Patsy was a player and manager in the early years of the club.

Mastergeeha U12 C Team had the honour of playing the first competitive game in Kerry in 2026 when we played Listowel Celtic B at home on Friday afternoon at a chilly Kilbrean Park. Mastergeeha started brightly and created several good chances through Ryan Dewhurst, Finn Murphy and Jamie Scanlon. We were unable to convert due to good goalkeeping by the Listowel keeper. This followed some good work on the right wing by Conor Doyle. Listowel took the lead from a corner on 15 minutes, against the run of play. Mastergeeha continued to dominate territory and possession for the remainder of the half but were thankful to our goalkeeper Jack O’Shea and our defence of Michael O’Connor, Jerry Gallivan and Jack Lucey who prevented Listowel from extending their lead following some quick breaks.

Mastergeeha regrouped at half time with Dara Reen, Jack Rogan and Maitiú Ó Móráin making an impact from the bench. The equalizer came when Maitiú Ó Móráin won back possession on the left wing, played the ball centrally to Jamie Scanlon who played a perfect through ball to put Rory Leane through one on one with the keeper. Rory scored with a composed finish from a tight angle.

Mastergeeha pushed for a winner with Finn Murphy very unlucky not to score the winner for a second game in a row.

Best on the day for Mastergeeha were Jamie Scanlon, Jerry Gallivan, Jack Lucey and Maitiú Ó Móráin. Jamie Scanlon ran himself to a standstill in central midfield. Jerry Gallivan was a rock at centre back and put in some great tackles and blocks and continuously drove the team forward from the back in the second half.

U13 BOYS DIVISION 2 SOUTH: Castleisland B 0 Mastergeeha B 0. Two very evenly matched teams served up an entertaining game of football on an extremely cold morning in Castleisland.

Mastergeeha shaded the first half, but chances were at a premium for both sides. The Castleisland goalkeeper and Mastergeeha keeper Zach Lenihan both dealt confidently with everything that came their way, snuffing out the few opportunities that were created. Second Half. Excellent defending from Adrian McGuire and Shane Counihan allowed Tom Hughes, Paul Mark and Conor Murphy to dominate possession. Mastergeeha controlled much of the second half but just couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Kilcummin GAA LIGHTS: Ireland Lights Up & Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Steps Challenge is back for 2026. The hugely popular ‘Ireland Lights Up’ walking initiative returns on January 7th, 2026, in partnership, with the Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Steps Challenge, and Get Ireland Walking. Kilcummin GAA and LGFA will be joining GAA clubs across the 32 counties once more to ensure ‘Ireland Lights Up’ by turning on their lights and hosting community walking groups for a period of 5 weeks. Members of the public are welcome to join us at the Kilcummin GAA Walking Track each Wednesday night between 7.30-8.30pm to walk safely with the flood lights on. You don't have to be a member of the club to take part. All welcome. Please note - On health and safety grounds, only therapy or assistance dogs are permitted on the walking track and GAA grounds. Club Steps Challenge €30,000 in prize funding is up for grabs for clubs, and you don’t have to be a member of any GAA Club to get involved. Kicking off on 7th January 2026 – participants are asked to track a combined 4000km over 5 weeks up until 11th February. Any club hitting the 4000km on the finish date will be entered into a draw to win a share of €30,000 funding for their club. Glenflesk GAA IRELAND LIGHTS UP: Glenflesk GAA are proud to be participants in ‘Ireland Lights Up’ once again and have registered for the MyLife Every Step Counts Challenge 2026. The challenge begins on the 8th of January for 40 days and runs until the 12th of February. The goal of this challenge is to collectively hit 4,000 Km for our club and be entered in a draw to win a share of the €30,000 prize fund.

The more participants on our team, the quicker we’ll hit our target. This is a great post-Christmas challenge and a great way of getting the Community together while getting fit also. ST. STEPHEN'S DAY WALK: A huge well done to all who travelled to Rossbeigh beach on St. Stephen's Day for our Walk.

A huge turnout ensured there was great craic and banter along the way and a huge well done to the hardy souls who took to the water for a dip after the walk, in freezing conditions. A super turn out with all funds going towards the purchase of a new Coxed Quad boat.

TORC MOUNTAIN WALK: Well done to our members who went for a new year’s eve hike up Torc mountain. A hardy bunch out enjoying the last day of 2025.

TRAINING: Training resumed following the Christmas break last Monday, the 5th of January at the Old Church. Preparations are underway for the forthcoming Indoor championships at UL on the 17th of January next.

Killarney Valley AC TRAINING: The club training groups have resumed this week after the festive break. However our road runners were busy over the break with local races.

5K: There are still a few places left on our Couch to 5K program for 2026 and anyone wishing to take the leap can book online on our website. It will start on 13th January with two sessions per week for 8 weeks (Tuesday and Thursday at 7.15pm). The goal is for all to be able to complete the Killarney House parkrun on Saturday 7th March 2026 in a fun non-competitive environment.

YOUTH RESULTS: It was a busy opening weekend of 2026 for our youth boys' squads, who hosted Munster Cup and Plate action at Aghadoe on Sunday. While the results didn't go our way, both teams put in battling performances against strong opposition.

U18.5 BOYS: The U18.5s hosted Waterpark RFC in the Munster Cup (Group 2).

Despite a high-scoring effort and plenty of determination, the visitors secured the win. Result: Killarney RFC 26-38 Waterpark RFC. U16 BOYS: Earlier in the day, our U16s faced Garryowen RFC in the Munster Plate (Group 2). A physical encounter saw the Limerick side come out on top.

Result: Killarney RFC 12 - 27 Garryowen RFC. U11s AT THOMOND PARK: A massive congratulations to our U11 Boys who had the experience of a lifetime on December 29th. The squad travelled to Thomond Park to play at half-time during the Munster v Leinster URC clash. Playing in front of a sold-out stadium was an incredible opportunity for the lads, who represented the club with pride and skill. A huge well done to the players and the coaching team for organizing such a memorable trip.

Killarney Judo Club HIGH PERFORMANCE: Killarney Judo began the new year on a high note, with two of its athletes training as part of the High Performance National Squad at Sport

Ireland Headquarters. The experience provided valuable preparation as they continue their journey toward competing for their black belts later this year, while also gaining exposure to training alongside athletes aiming to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. The national squad opportunity follows a highly successful December for the club, with Killarney Judo returning from the All-Ireland Championships with an impressive medal haul of three golds, two silvers and four bronzes, many of which were achieved by the club’s younger competitors. Developing young judoka remains a key priority for the club in 2026, with an emphasis on building confidence, competition experience and technical skills through increased participation in local and regional tournaments. With clear pathways from grassroots to national level now firmly in place, Killarney Judo is looking forward to another successful year, especially with the development of Derreen Sports Centre, both in developing its youth athletes and in representing the town on the national stage.

Kilcummin PINK NIGHT RESCHEDULED: The Ladies’ Committee of Kilcummin GAA Club would like to announce the rescheduling of its annual Pink Night, taking place in The Klub Bar, it will now take place on Saturday, January 10th. Now in its twelfth year—and supporting Comfort for Chemo for the fifth year running—this much-loved event promises a fantastic

evening of fun and fundraising for all.

Guests will be greeted with a prosecco reception and chocolate-dipped strawberries to set the tone for a relaxed post-Christmas celebration. While everyone is encouraged to wear pink, dressing up is completely optional—the true spirit of the night is community, enjoyment, and support for a great cause. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed Female and Best Dressed Male. The festivities begin at 8pm, with entertainment from Derry and Rosie Healy from 8 to 10:00pm, followed by Barry McGrath playing late into the night. A brilliant raffle will take place on the night, along with fantastic door prizes kindly provided by our wonderful local sponsors, whose continued support is deeply appreciated.

JUNIOR SET DANCING: Registration for junior set dancing will take place on Friday 16th January from 7 to 7.45pm in Kilcummin Recreational Hall. Dancing will commence on Friday 23rd January from 7 to 8pm for beginners and intermediates and 8 to 9pm for advanced. These classes are also open to children from outside Kilcummin parish.
