New Derreen sports facility moves closer to completion Club and Killarney Judo Club. Once completed, the facility will provide long-term sporting and community benefits for the area.

Speaking during the visit, Tim Kelly of Killarney Judo Club said there is growing national interest in developing Killarney as a base for international judo training

camps. “This opportunity will undoubtedly strengthen the club and support the development of future champions,” he said.

Construction to date has been funded through the Community Recognition Fund administered by Kerry County Council. Further works will be support-

ed by Sports Capital and LSSIF funding through the Department of Sport. The timeline for completion will depend on the release of these funds.

The Derreen facility will include a sports hall, gym and dedicated spaces for multiple clubs and activities.

Tour de Munster raises €500k for Down Syndrome The Tour de Munster charity cycle has announced that last year’s 25th-anniversary event raised over €543,000 for Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI).

The final total was officially revealed just before Christmas during a cheque presentation ceremony attended by cycling legend and long-time supporter Sean Kelly.

While the main sum benefits DSI, the inclusion of other individual charity choices by cyclists brought the overall event total to more than €575,000 for 2025.

The four-day, 600km cycle passed through Killarney last August as part of its

route across the six counties of Munster.

Since its inception in 2001, the Tour has now raised a total of €5.5 million for Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland.

John O’Connor of Down Syndrome Kerry said: "Each stop on the route is an occasion of great joy and gives us all a great lift, The support from the cyclists and the public is invaluable, enabling us to provide crucial services for our members in the Kerry branch."

Each participant covers their own expenses, ensuring that all funds raised go directly to the charity. The money supports essential services and facilities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout the region.

Tributes paid to Killarney Athletic stalwart Toni Fleming Tributes have been paid across Killarney following the death of Toni Fleming of Ardshanavooley and formerly of Dalton’s Avenue, who passed away peacefully on Christmas Day in the care of the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry.

A lifelong and hugely respected member of Killarney Athletic A.F.C., Toni was regarded as one of the driving forces behind the club for more than five decades.

He joined Killarney Athletic in 1971, played for many years and was affectionately known as ‘Tappy No. ‘ for his goal scoring ability.

He later served as chairman on two occasions and remained deeply involved with the club right up to recent times, often arriving early each morning to carry out whatever tasks needed to be done.

Killarney Athletic A.F.C. said Toni was “a true gent and a wonderful clubman” who would be greatly missed. The club formed a guard of honour outside St Mary’s Cathedral following his Requiem Mass on Saturday morning, with members wearing club colours as a mark of respect.

Toni was also widely known in the town for his community involvement. At Jimmy Brien’s Bar he was remembered as a regular and a great character who played a major role in organising charity initiatives, including the cancer bus bottle drive which raised thousands of euro over the years.

Kerry Football Club also expressed its sympathy, noting that Toni was the father of long-time volunteer Lorraine and brother in law of matchday operations manager Gerardine Nagle.

Toni is survived by his wife Phil, son Stephen, daughters Lorraine and Amanda, his grandson Ethan, great grandchildren Maddison and Theo, brothers, sister and extended family.

He was laid to rest following his Requiem Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Major funding boost for four local community centres Community facilities in Fossa and Milltown are set to benefit from significant investment following the announcement of funding under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Fossa Community Centre has been awarded €300,000, while Muintir na Tíre Hall in Milltown will receive €269,939. The funding will support upgrade and development works aimed at improving facilities and ensuring the centres continue to meet the needs of their local communities.

The allocations form part of over €1.4 million announced for community projects across Kerry, with six centres in total receiving support under the scheme.

Additional funding has also been approved for project development works

at Rathmore and Currow community centres, with €50,000 allocated to each location to assist with planning and preparatory stages ahead of future upgrades.

Others getting funding under the scheme are Listowel Community Centre (€500,000), Corcra Dhuibhne Museum & Community Centre (€300,000).

Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomed the announcement, saying the funding reflects the Government’s continued focus on strengthening rural communities and improving shared public spaces.

The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is designed to rejuvenate rural towns and villages and is delivered as part of the wider Rural Development Investment Programme.

Lakes to play key role in new water search dog programme Killarney Water Rescue Search and Recovery will be one of the driving forces behind a new national initiative launching in 2026, Ireland’s first dedicated Cadaver Water Search Dog Training Programme.

Anseo bus service carries 20k passengers in first four months

The programme will train specialist dogs to detect human remains under water, supporting missing person searches and recovery operations where time is critical. Training will take place on the Killarney Lakes within Killarney National Park,

using both shoreline and boat based search environments.

The project is a collaboration between Hounds and Helis, Ireland’s Specialist Search and Rescue Dogs (ISSARD), and Killarney Water Rescue Search and Recovery.

The initiative aims to strengthen Ireland’s search and rescue capability by providing highly trained canine teams to assist emergency services during complex water searches.

The TFI Anseo bus service in Killarney has carried more than 20,000 passengers in its first four months of operation, according to figures released by the National Transport Authority in partnership with TFI Local Link Kerry.

The demand responsive service, which launched on August 11, has seen steady growth, reflecting strong local take up and increasing demand for sustainable transport options in the town. In the run up to Christmas, the service reached another milestone when 2,023 passengers used Anseo in a single week, the highest weekly total since its introduction and the first time weekly usage passed the 2,000 mark.

To meet growing demand, operating hours were extended in early October.

The service now runs from 6.30am to 11pm, seven days a week, providing greater flexibility for commuters, shoppers and visitors.

Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, said the figures showed the service was making a real difference in Killarney and highlighted the community’s support for accessible and reliable public transport.

Alan O’Connell, General Manager of TFI Local Link Kerry, said the extended hours had further improved accessibility and given people an additional transport option for daily travel.

TFI Anseo operates as a smart, app based service within a designated Killarney zone and is funded through the Government’s Climate Action Fund under the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan.

Garda Seán O’Sullivan honoured as 2025 Radio Kerry Hero Killarney’s Seán O’Sullivan has been named as one of the Fexco Kerry Heroes of 2025 following his life-saving actions earlier this year.

The award, organised by Radio Kerry and Fexco, recognises Seán’s courage and his subsequent work as an advocate for CPR training. In April 2025, Seán saved the life of his 24-year-old son, Seán Óg, who had suffered a cardiac arrest at the family home.

The incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon when Seán Óg, a fit and healthy

non-smoker, suddenly became unresponsive.

His younger brother Conor (15) began CPR before Seán took over, maintaining the effort until paramedics arrived ten minutes later. Seán Óg was then flown by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital. Medical staff confirmed that the immediate CPR performed at home was the deciding factor in his survival.

Since the incident, Seán has used his platform to encourage everyone to learn CPR, highlighting that such emergencies can happen to anyone, anywhere. He

was one of eight recipients chosen by a judging panel for their outstanding community spirit and service to the county.

The winners were announced on the Kerry Today programme just before the Christmas break, and each received a specially commissioned Fexco Kerry Heroes wall plaque.

Also honoured in the 2025 awards was Jerh O’Donoghue of the Social Action Group in Rathmore. Founded by Jerh in 1975, the group has delivered vital services like meals on wheels and a day care centre for 50 years.

2026 Killarney National Park calendar published Now an annual tradition, National Parks and Wildlife Service have produced their annual ‘Killarney National Park Calendar 2026’ which aims to celebrate our biodiversity, restoration projects, woodlands, native flora, fauna and the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The Calendar is now available to purchase at Muckross Craft Shop for €5.

A new radio documentary by Killarney native Kelly Crichton is examining the role played by the Dunnes Stores strikers in influencing Ireland’s stance on apartheid South Africa.

‘The Power of the People’ revisits the strike that began on July 19, 1984, when Dunnes Stores worker Mary Manning refused to handle South African grapefruit at the Henry Street store in Dublin. Acting on instructions from her union not to handle South African goods, Manning was suspended from work, triggering what became one of the longest-running strikes in Irish trade union history.

The documentary explores the early tensions within the store, the personal cost to the strikers, and the growing political and international significance of their protest. Three of the original strikers feature prominently: Mary Manning, Liz Deasy, who was 17 at the time, and Tralee woman Karen Gearon, who addressed the United Nations during the dispute.

Mary Manning said the group faced isolation and hostility in the early stages of the strike but remained committed to their position despite threats and difficult experiences, including being

dense growth. This has been the game changer in the decades-long battle to clear Rhododendron in Killarney National Park.”

Padruig O’Sullivan, NPWS Conservation Ranger added, “We have been mindful of preserving the old ruins of Cullinagh (the lost village) or Cullina na dTorna an ancient holly wood once occupied by the clan of Torna. The latest clearance of ancient woodland has revealed: dry stone walls, lazy beds or potato drills, 3 old farmsteads and animal shelters. The people who farmed in Cullinagh were self-sufficient, with access to nearby Minister’s Fall Cascade, O’Sullivans Cascade and Screen Stream.”

Always grateful for local knowledge: below the townland of Cullinagh is the iconic Royal Oak and directly across Lough Lein, the ruins of Innisfallen Island Monastery, founded in 631 by St. Faithleann. There are references of Cullinagh in the historical Annals of Innisfall-

en written by the Monks on the Island.

Kelly Crichton said she was struck by the scale of what the group achieved when researching the documentary. She said

the story remains relevant and offers lessons about collective action and persistence.

The documentary marks 40 years since the strikers’ visit to South Africa and addresses to the UN. ‘The Power of the People’ aired on ‘Documentary’ on Newstalk on St Stephen’s Day.

Killarney transport firm O’Callaghan Coaches honoured long-serving staff member Kevin O’Sullivan at their annual Christmas party held at the Fáilte Hotel last week.

O’Sullivan was officially inducted into the O'Callaghan Coaches Hall of Fame, joining company founders James and Lena O’Callaghan, as well as Denis Lynch and Mike Moynihan, in recognition of his service.

Kevin O’Sullivan inducted into O’Callaghan Coaches Hall of Fame over 30 years ago. His early career involved driving taxis around Killarney town at night, while operating school buses and private hire coaches during the day.

The event capped off a significant year for the Killarney-based operator. O’Callaghan Coaches was recently named Ireland’s Best Small Workplace for 2025 and received Fáilte Ireland’s Outstanding Employer Award for both 2024 and 2025.

‘The Ghosts of Rome’ named An Post Book of the Year Joseph O’Connor’s latest novel, The Ghosts of Rome, has been named the overall An Post Irish Book of the Year 2025.

The announcement was made during a special television broadcast on RTÉ One hosted by broadcaster Oliver Callan. The book, which previously won The Last Word Listeners’ Choice Award at the An Post Irish Book Awards, was selected as the overall winner by a panel of judges chaired by author Paul Howard.

The Ghosts of Rome is the second instalment in O’Connor’s Escape Line Trilogy.

It follows the success of the first book, My Father’s House, which has sold over 150,000 copies in English. Both novels reached the Number One spot on the Irish bestseller charts within days of their release.

MONSIGNOR HUGH O’FLAHERTY

The trilogy is inspired by the extraordinary true story of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, known as the ‘Vatican Pimpernel’.

Though born in County Cork, O'Flaherty was raised in Killarney, attending the local Monastery school.

During World War II, O’Flaherty used his position in the Vatican to coordinate

Killarney Soroptimist Club marked the Christmas season by once again supporting ADAPT Kerry through the presentation of a number of Christmas hampers to the organisation.

Members of the club, along with family and friends, came together to create the hampers, which were delivered to the ADAPT Kerry team in Tralee before Christmas.

The annual initiative aims to provide practical support and a sense of care to women and children using the refuge

service during the festive period.

Club President Teresa Irwin thanked everyone who contributed, saying the hampers were intended to bring some comfort and positivity at what can be a difficult time of year. She said the club hoped the mothers and children would enjoy them over Christmas.

Catherine Casey, General Manager of ADAPT Kerry, said the ongoing support from Killarney Soroptimists was greatly appreciated and highlighted the strong relationship built between both organisations over recent years.

Major Garda activity following drug smuggling operation

Killarney town centre witnessed an unusual level of Garda activity with several Garda vans and cars arriving at the Courthouse with sirens blaring.

This Garda presence was a direct result of a major drug smuggling operation that unfolded over the previous weekend.

Four men were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning on suspicion of assisting an organised crime group in importing controlled drugs.

The men, who have addresses in Serbia, Manchester, Derry, and Glasgow, appeared in Killarney District Court.

The operation began with Gardaí and Customs Services acting on confidential information that suggested suspicious activity by four men.

Investigations revealed that a rigid in-

flatable boat (RIB) was transported to Glen Pier and fitted with two high-powered engines. A second RIB was located in Portmagee.

On Sunday, one of the RIBs was moved to Meenogahane pier in north Kerry.

The four men were observed boarding the boat and heading out to sea shortly after midnight.

Upon their return, the men were observed disembarking and loading items into a Land Rover Discovery.

It is believed that the men were waiting offshore for a "mothership" to drop off a consignment of drugs in the water.

Gardaí recovered several items from the vehicle, including night vision equipment, GPS devices, seven mobile phones, and an encryption device, but no drugs have been recovered to date.

Killarney transformed into a Winter Wonderland At the start of this year, Killarney was blanketed in the heaviest snowfall in living memory, transforming the town into a magical winter wonderland.

Schools enjoyed an extra week off, children and adults alike enjoyed the snowy spectacle. Amazing photographs were sent in by our readers throughout the week. The snowstorm also highlighted significant resource shortages within the HSE in rural Kerry as heavy snowfall left many residents in isolated rural areas cut off from essential services.

O'Flaherty, a well-respected mastering engineer over 30 years, along with his wife Sidney Pogatchnik and their two daughters Mirabel and Ellie, lost their home in the recent wildfires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

The family, who resided in the Altadena area near Pasadena, were forced to evacuate as the fires intensified.

Tragically, their home was completely destroyed in the blaze.

In response to this unimaginable loss, a friend, Graham Cruser Marsh, set up the GoFundMe campaign to aid the O'Flaherty family.

Describing them as "the kindest and

most selfless" family, Marsh aimed to raise funds to assist them in securing new housing, essential living supplies, and rebuilding their lives.

The campaign highlighted O'Flaherty's reputation in the music industry, praising him as "one of the most thoughtful and talented humans."

"Anyone that knows Ruairi and Sidney knows that they would never ask for anything," Marsh wrote on the GoFundMe page. "I'm asking for all the help from the community, friends, producers, artists, and collaborators to come together in this time of need. Please consider a donation for the O'Flaherty family."

With the GoFundMe campaign exceeding its initial target, the O'Flaherty family will receive much-needed assistance during this challenging time.

The Kerry poll-topper has become just the 12th Kerry TD to attain the position of a Minister of State (previously Parliamentary Secretary) and the first ever Independent to do so.

Kerry has received a record €33 million for local and regional roads, as part of a €713 million national investment program for 2025.

Centra staff use deposit returns to fund defibrillator Sheahan's Centra on Muckross Road has taken a proactive step in enhancing community safety by installing a new defibrillator on its premises.

This valuable addition was made possible through a unique initiative driven by the store's dedicated staff and the generosity of its customers.

Following the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in February 2024, staff members Kevin and Patricia Ennis, observing a significant number of bottles being discarded, proposed collecting these unclaimed returns and using the refund money

to benefit the community.

This idea was welcomed by the entire store team, management, and local shoppers.

By March, Sheahan's Centra had established designated DRS collection points, actively encouraging customers to contribute to the cause.

While shoppers retained the option to claim their own refunds, a remarkable number chose to donate their returns.

The funds accumulated through these donations were then used to purchase and install a new defibrillator at the store, providing a potentially life-saving resource for both staff and the wider community.

The funding was confirmed by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien this week.

While projects are planned for all five municipal districts, there are significant allocations specifically benefiting the Killarney area.

The funding was welcomed by the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley.

Minister Foley highlighted several key projects, including €100,000 allocated for the 200-year-old Listry Bridge on the R563 Killarney to Milltown Road and €25,000 for the Gap of Dunloe

Bridge.

The €200,000 allocated for the Killarney Strategic Links Project is a significant investment and a crucial step in addressing traffic alleviation plans in the area. While the amount may seem modest in the context of the overall funding, it is expected to kickstart much-needed improvements to traffic flow.

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae TD and Deputy Danny Healy Rae TD also welcomed the funding, highlighting the increase compared to the 2024 allocation.

"The Kerry figure is a significant rise of €1.56 Million on the €31.8M from 2024 and something both myself and my brother Danny have worked hard to deliver on," said Minister Healy-Rae.

Traffic management solution sought for Park Road junction At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Councillor Martin Grady's motion to implement a traffic management system at the Cinema/McDonald’s Junction on Park Road was passed.

Councillor Grady described the junction as a "death trap" with several incidents occurring there.

He cited the unfairness to residents on Park Road and those living in estates near McDonalds. "This should

have never been allowed," he told the meeting, highlighting the significant increase in cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicular traffic on Park Road in recent years.

The Roads Section of the Council responded, stating that junction improvement works are being designed to meet current and future traffic needs, including pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. The statutory process for these improvements is anticipated to begin in 2025.

"Everybody of a certain vintage will know all about Johnny Culloty’s prowess as a footballer, a hurler, a basketball player, a rower in regattas and as a golfer," the Chamber said.

"He was undoubtedly one of the greatest sportspeople this town has ever produced and we don’t see his likes too often. Many tributes have been paid to Johnny since his passing and it is clear that he will be remembered as a true genius on the field and a pure gentleman off it."

Legion GAA Club PRO Enda Walshe said, "It was his lifelong achievements that made him stand out as arguably the town's greatest achiever in the colours of Kerry."

Killarney Musical Society's 'Evita' a resounding success

The Killarney Musical Society's production of 'Evita' concluded its run at the INEC with three nights of packed audiences and an extra children's matinee on Tuesday afternoon.

The production, which ran from March 11 to 13, brought to life the story of Eva Peron, as told through the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyrics of Tim Rice.

Months of rehearsals, held across numerous venues, culminated in what

the society described as an "absolutely incredible show." The audience experienced an "emotional rollercoaster" through Eva Peron's life, with the music mirroring her journey.

The production featured a large cast, a 16-piece orchestra under Musical Director Jimmy Brockie, and choreography by Stephen O'Rian. Liam Butler directed the show, which included sets, sound by Star Sound Systems, costumes by Pat McGann, and lighting by John Hurley of InFocus Lighting and Projection Design.

Road project to be re-named Kerry-Cork Economic Corridor to secure funding The planned road from Farranfore to Lissivigeen will be called the "Kerry-Cork Economic Corridor," not the Killarney bypass, to secure funding, according to Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae. Healy-Rae explained at a Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce lunch that the name change is crucial for obtaining financial support for the project.

He said he had a disagreement with Taoiseach Micheál Martin over the project's title.

“He wanted to call it the Cork-Kerry Economic Corridor. I said there was no such thing – it’s our land so it’s starting with Kerry,” said Healy Rae. Meanwhile in Dáil Éireann recently, local Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Cahill, raised Kerry road projects with the Minister for Transport, Environment, Climate and Communications, Darragh O’Brien.

“I impressed upon Minister O’Brien the absolute urgent requirement to proceed with the new bypass from Killarney to Farranfore, to finally free the gridlock traffic that is everyday life in the town,” said Deputy Cahill.

The award recognises the company's commitment to sustainability and ethical food production and comes on the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Main St outlet.

Paula McIntyre, chair of the IFWG, highlighted the issue of "greenwashing" in the food and drinks industry, where companies use misleading marketing tactics to appear sustainable. She said that Murphy's Ice Cream represents genuine sustainable practices.

Penneys has officially unveiled its newly refurbished store following a €3.5 million investment.

Former President Mary Robinson honoured at annual Sem event Former Irish President Mary Robinson was the special guest at St Brendan's College's annual entertainment event last Thursday.

Mary Robinson, who served as Ireland's seventh president from 1990 to 1997, later became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She has received numerous awards for her work in human rights, including Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscience award and the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Liam O'Connor and his ensemble delivered a performance that captivated the audience, filling the venue with a magical atmosphere. They were joined by talented singers and musicians from St Brendan's College.

The event, particularly because of Mary’s presence, generated significant excitement. "People are still talking about the palpable buzz around the venue before and throughout her

visit, reflecting the high level of esteem in which she is still held. Many people were keen to speak to her, and her warmth, her good humour and her genuine commitment to all that is good about our country was an inspiration to all present. I felt personally honoured by her attendance as well as by her eloquence. It will certainly go down as one of the highlights of my musical career and I must humbly thank her for taking the time out of her busy schedule to honour us all.

This was a very special occasion that will be remembered for many years to come by all who were there," said Liam O'Connor.

Kerry’s sausage dogs social outing in the park The meet-up, organised by Mary O’Carroll from Killarney and Gina Lawlor Barron from Milltown, brought together an incredible 35 dachshunds and their owners from all corners of Kerry, far surpassing the organisers’ modest hope of 10 dogs attending.

The idea for the group sparked when

Killarney garda saves son’s life with CPR

It was just after 4pm last Sunday when local garda Sean O’Sullivan noticed his son's, Seán Óg’s breathing had turned erratic, and he was gasping for air.

Within seconds, Seán Óg became unresponsive. Younger son Conor (15) began CPR with Dad quickly taking over until paramedics arrived at 4.10pm. Despite being a fit, healthy 6’1” non-smoker, Seán Óg had gone into cardiac arrest. It was a further

20 minutes before the air ambulance landed in a nearby field in Whitebridge. He was flown to Cork University Hospital in just 15 minutes, and remains there for observation.

“The paramedics told us that Dad’s CPR is what kept the oxygen flowing – it’s what saved Seán’s life,” said Gary.

“You never think it’ll happen to you, or in your house,” Gary said. “But it can.

And thanks to Dad and the emergency services, Seán is still with us.”

Danny Healy-Rae slams Fossa roadworks fiasco in Dail

Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has criticised the ongoing roadworks in Fossa, raising concerns about the safety of the layout and the value for money being achieved.

Killarney officially recognised as an Autism Friendly Town Killarney has officially been recognised as an Autism Friendly Town, joining Clonakilty and Maynooth as only the third town in Ireland to achieve this designation in partnership with AsIAm, Ireland’s National Autism Charity.

A celebration was held at the Killarney Plaza Hotel, bringing together local business leaders, families, and advocates to acknowledge the community's collaborative efforts in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for autistic people.

Adam Harris, CEO and Founder of AsIAm said: “Today is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to embrace and understand neurodiversity. Killarney is lead-

The event honoured over 30 local businesses that have undergone training and implemented changes to better support autistic individuals and their families.

Jessica O’Connor, Chairperson of the Autism Friendly Killarney Committee, added: “This milestone represents just the beginning of Killarney’s journey in building an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of neurodiversity, can participate fully in community life.”

Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Deputy Healy-Rae told the Taoiseach that the carriageway has been significantly narrowed as part of "active travel" works, reducing it to 20 feet while widening footpaths, cycleways, and grass margins. "People are very upset and concerned about the value for money," Deputy Healy-Rae said. "I ask that until some review, investigation or assessment is done and people are sure of what is happening, no more of this kind of work be carried out."

This stretch of road, between the Golden Nugget and the Gap Cross on the Ring of Kerry route, is heavily used by tourists and locals alike.

He pointed out the irony that this was

previously the widest part of the road, while efforts are being made to widen other sections. "Tractors, agricultural vehicles and hauliers cannot pass each other anymore," he added.

Deputy Healy-Rae also expressed concerns about proposed similar works on the N22 from the Cork side into Killarney, including the removal of Daly's roundabout and further narrowing of the road. He called for a "proper assessment and review of value for money" before such works proceed.

In response, the Taoiseach acknowledged Deputy Healy-Rae's local knowledge and stated that the Fossa project is likely a National Transport Authority (NTA) initiative.

He agreed that there should be a thorough evaluation of the value-for-money aspects of such projects and clarity on the objectives, especially when road narrowing can create difficulties for all road users.

Postman Denny Cronin retires after 42 years After an incredible 42 years of delivering smiles and the post, Killarney's own Denis "Denny" Cronin is hanging up his postman's cap and keys.

Green Lawn residents voice opposition to proposed car park Residents in the Green Lawn area of Killarney have expressed anger and concern over plans for a 139-space car park.

The proposal is currently undergoing public consultation as part of the planning process, and many residents fear that the chosen location will increase existing traffic congestion on the already heavily trafficked Mission Road.

Furthermore, those living in Green

Lawn are worried about the potential negative impact of increased noise and footfall on their residential area, which is home to many elderly individuals who have lived there for generations.

Dominic Rintoul, whose elderly mother lives close to the proposed site said: "We do not feel this is an appropriate place for a car park. There is already grid-lock coming and going from Mission Road, and this will only add to it."

Denny, who started his career in Tralee but has been a friendly and familiar face around Killarney for most of his long service at the local Post Office, will be greatly missed by the community.

Denny was known for his quick sense of humor, his constant smile, and his willingness to always go the extra mile to make sure everyone received their parcels. Whether it was a quick hello on the street or a daily chat at the door, everyone who met Denny always came away feeling a little brighter.

Outside of his postal duties, Denny is a keen golfer who enjoys hitting the fairways with his wife, Kathleen. He is also a proud father to Alan, Denise, and Cathy, and a doting grandfather to six grandsons. With his retirement, Denny is looking forward to spending more time with his family, including trips to

Australia to visit his two eldest children and to Galway to see his youngest.

While he will be sorely missed by his colleagues at the Post Office, his family is overjoyed to congratulate their Dad, Husband, and Grandad on his remarkable 42 years of service and wish him many happy years ahead in his well-deserved retirement.

"These grants are an acknowledgment of the warm welcome that communities across Kerry have provided to people coming to Ireland from Ukraine and other countries," Minister Foley said.

Dermot was the husband of press photographer Michelle Cooper-Galvin. They had three children: Caoimhe, Gráinne, and Diarmuid, and resided at Lackabane Village. He was a dedicated member of Dr Crokes GAA Club, having played for the club at all levels. Mr Galvin also held prominent roles on the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee.

Dermot worked in the family hardware and builder supply firm but also spent

a lot of time in London. He was a regular attendee at events like the Kerry Association London dinner dance and the Killarney-London Reunion. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the Palliative Care Unit of University Hospital Kerry. He will be sadly missed by his son-in-law Kevin, Gráinne's partner Jonathan, and daughter-in-law Siobhán. He was also a cherished grandfather to Pierce, Kate, and Emily. He is survived by his sisters Maria, Sheila, Doreen, and Bríd, brothers-in-law David and Andy, sister-in-law Katherine and her husband Bernie, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, and many friends in Killarney and London.

"He's smiling down on me today" The newly elected Mayor of Killarney has paid a fond tribute to his late father saying: “He’s smiling down on me today,” following his appointment.

Cllr Martin O’Grady has become the third generation and fourth member of his family to hold the title of Mayor of Killarney, a role he described as both humbling and a blessing.

His grandfather John O’Grady, uncle Seán, and father Donal all served on the council before him, continuing a proud family legacy of public service.

Cllr O’Grady outlined several key priorities for his term as Mayor. These include increasing the availability of so-

cial and affordable housing for young families, reducing planning restrictions for those seeking to build on family land, and advancing Phase 1 of the Derreen Sports Complex project.

Fellow councillors congratulated Cllr O’Grady on his appointment and wished him every success in his new role.

Outgoing Mayor, Independent Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, described the position as a huge achievement and honour. She expressed full confidence that Cllr O’Grady would rise to the challenge, adding that his late father would be “charmed to see him in the chair.”

Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle to honour Paddy O’Donoghue This year's Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle will be run in memory of Paddy O'Donoghue, a founding member of the event.

Mr O'Donoghue, from Muckross, passed away aged 81 following a road collision in Kilgarvan on Tuesday.

He was a driving force behind the annual charity cycle since its inception in 1982. The Glenflesk native was also a notable footballer, having been part of the East Kerry team that secured the first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1971.

Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Cycle said: “He was a fantastic supporter of the annual charity cycle.

A regular participant and wonderful fundraiser for whatever charity he chose. Paddy loved a challenge in whatever he undertook and was the

epitome of what the event was all about. We miss the banter and craic but he won't ever be forgotten. This year's event will be dedicated to his memory on July the 5th. His likes will never be seen again. Slan Abhaile our friend.”

Mr Kelly, a former president of the GAA and a current Member of the European Parliament for Ireland South, made the announcement in a statement to the Killarney Advertiser on Thursday morning.

Mr Kelly had in recent weeks expressed an interest in running as his party’s candidate to replace Michael D. Higgins.

His decision leaves the Fine Gael nomination open, with former EU Com-

missioner Mairead McGuinness also considered a potential candidate.

In his statement, Mr Kelly explained his decision: "When so many people believe you are suited to such an important position, that’s something you have to consider very seriously."

"I’ve discussed this at length with members of my family in recent weeks and months, and we’ve ultimately agreed that entering the Presidential race is not the right move at this point in time. I want to thank my wife, Juliette, and my family for their willingness to fully support whatever decision I came to."

Killarney mourns tragic loss of teenage girl Killarney rallied around the O’Callaghan family this week as the town celebrated the cherished life of Isabelle O’Callaghan, a seventeen-year-old girl who tragically lost her life on Thursday. She was riding her horse when tragedy struck at her home in Rockfield.

Celbrating her funeral mass on Monday afternoon, Fr Kieran O'Brien said, "Isabelle’s gift was her life and that’s how she will be remembered."

Fondly known as Izzy by her family and friends, Isabelle was remembered as a beautiful young woman who wore a big smile every day. She had a deep love for nature, the land, and animals — a love that reflected her generous spirit. Isabelle radiated kindness and goodness, qualities that shone through in all aspects of her daily life. She was a daily caller to her grandparents with whom she shared a close bond. She lived and breathed horses, and although she was only 17,

she was well known and respected in the equine circle. Fr Kieran urged the O’Callaghan family not to give up in the wake of this unimaginable loss.

He reminded them that the entire Killarney community stands with them, and they will always be supported in the wake of the loss of their beautiful daughter.

While there has been no official confirmation, the closure has been reported in the national business media A spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser on Thursday evening: “I hope to have a statement from the company Friday morning.”

The potential closure of the landmark building on the Ring of Kerry will cost 50 jobs and will be a blow to Killarney’s tourism offering.

This follows the company’s announcement in April that it had filed for examinership in an effort to restructure and attract new investment.

At the time, directors cited a range of challenges including the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased costs, supply chain disruptions, and delays in the opening of its Fossa distillery. A planned merger with a USbased partner also fell through earlier this year.

Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company had hoped the examinership process would offer a path toward securing its future.

Mobile home rental highlights local housing shortages Killarney's ongoing housing crisis and severe shortage of available rental properties took an unexpected turn with a local landlord offering a two-bedroom mobile home for rent.

The listing, advertised at €650 per month, is located 25 minutes outside Killarney town and includes electricity and Wi-Fi. This type of offering highlights the current pressures in the local rental market. Recent reports indicate a significant lack of long-term rental properties in Kerry, with average rents across the county reaching €1,443 in the final quarter of 2024, marking a

64% increase since 2020.

House prices have also seen substantial rises, making home ownership increasingly difficult for many.

On-demand town bus service launched

Councillors listen to the people and reject €47m Áras Phádraig plan Killarney councillors have reversed their decision to back a €47 million development at the Áras Phádraig site, despite approving the plan earlier this year.

The proposal included a six-storey HSE primary care centre, a three-storey theatre, and a new public plaza on Lewis Road. The scheme was to be funded through a mix of government regeneration funds, Kerry County Council contributions, and HSE investment.

At a meeting last week, all seven municipal district councillors voted against the project following strong

public opposition.

A total of 162 public submissions were received, most of them critical of the plan. Concerns raised included the sale of a publicly owned site to the HSE, loss of parking, traffic issues on Lewis Road, and the scale and height of the proposed building. There was also unease over the availability of other HSEowned sites in the town and vacant buildings already under its control.

The original Part 8 planning process had to be repeated earlier this year when council management admitted that some public submissions had not been circulated to councillors before the first vote.

This pilot initiative, part of the NTA’s Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, marks the second of its kind introduced and aims to transform how communities access public transport by offering a flexible, app-based service tailored to local needs.

It follows the successful launch of TFI Anseo in Achill, Co Mayo, last month.

The Killarney pilot will introduce a flexible, technology-enabled public transport service which aims to alleviate traffic and improve access to essential services, including medical appointments, social events and retail areas.

Using the ‘TFI Anseo’ app, passengers will be able to book on-demand rides with ease, bringing the convenience

of modern rideshare together with the reliability and affordability of public transport.

Unlike conventional fixed-route services, the innovative Smart DRT model empowers passengers to request pickups and drop-offs within the designated Killarney zone, delivering improved flexibility and accessibility for all.

The Smart DRT pilot is powered by Operated by TFI Local Link Kerry using clearly branded TFI Anseo vehicles, the service will run for an initial 12 months.

Fares will be distance-based, with most trips costing €3 or less, ensuring the service remains affordable for all users.

TFI Local Link Kerry General Manager Alan O’Connell said: “This innovative pilot will make a real difference to Killarney."

The NTA is encouraging residents to try the service during the pilot phase and provide feedback to help shape the future of urban mobility.

The funds were raised through generous donations during our Kudos Family Fun Day. Autism Friendly Killarney is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the people and businesses of Killarney in their efforts to make the community more inclusive and welcoming for autistic and neurodiverse individuals. Since its founding in 2023, the organisation has gone from strength to strength, working closely

with local businesses and residents to promote awareness and accessibility.

The event was generously supported by local businesses in Killarney. Mr Price donated a large selection of toys for the raffle on the day. Spot prizes were vouchers which were kindly gifted by Who’s4Shoes, Bricín Restaurant, Murphy Browns Restaurant and Aromas Beauty Studio. The main prize of the day was from Igloo Memories (worth €350) for a family experience day. Committee member Bridget O’Keeffe accepted the cheque on behalf of the group.

There is deep sadness in Glenflesk following the death of local man Paudie (Padraig) O’Rahilly, who drowned in the River Flesk on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the river shortly after 3pm following reports of a man in difficulty in the water near the Woodlawn area of Killarney.

Paramedics, fire service crews, a doctor, and members of the public assisted at the scene. Mr O’Rahilly, aged in his late 20s and from Headford was recovered from the water and pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident.

Paudie was a well-known figure in the local GAA community, having played with Glenflesk at all levels from underage to senior. He was part of the club’s 2018 East Kerry campaign and contrib-

uted to the Division 6 team’s promotion in 2022.

Club vice-president Derry Healy said the news was a huge shock. “They are a lovely, honest family. This is a tragedy for them and the whole community,” he said.

Paudie is survived by his mother Margaret, father Liam, and siblings Valerie, Maureen, and Nathan. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed later.

Frank Coffey shuts up shop after four incredible decades in business After almost four decades in business, Frank Coffey has decided to close the doors of his shoe shop located on High Street.

Mr Coffey sold many school shoes to the locals of Killarney, one being Hollywood star Michael Fassbender.

He recalled a moment when his son met Michael Fassbender, and mentioned that his dad owned a shoe shop in Killarney, and Michael Fassbender

immediately remembered buying his school shoes from him.

Mr Coffey said his favourite thing about his business was the personal aspect to it. He took great satisfaction in helping and advising customers on what to buy.

He said: “I knew everyone, I knew what was going on in their lives, that is the one thing I will miss most of all. The banter, the craic, the communication.”

Seanie Clifford running the entire Wild Atlantic Way for mental health Killarney man Sean Clifford, better known locally as ‘Seanie Runner’, is currently attempting one of the toughest endurance challenges ever seen in Ireland by running the full 2,700km length of the Wild Atlantic Way.

He set off from Muff in Donegal on August 7 and plans to reach Kinsale, Cork, early next week.

The route takes in the full Atlantic coastline of Ireland and will require him to cover an average of 90 to 100 kilometres every day. If successful, he will complete the distance in just 27 days.

His run is aimed at raising awareness for mental health and the benefits of

outdoor activity. On the first day of the run, Clifford covered 103km from Muff to Malin. Strong winds and heavy weather made conditions difficult, but he reached Malin village by nightfall.

By this Friday, Clifford is expected to have completed the full Ring of Kerry section of the Wild Atlantic Way and be running in the direction of the Beara Peninsula, pushing through more than half of the entire route.

The challenge is being carried out on a solo basis, but Clifford has been receiving strong support from family, friends, and local communities who have turned out to cheer him along the way.

Boyzone star Ronan Keating films at Dr Crokes Former Boyzone star Ronan Keating was in Killarney this week as part of a BBC production crew filming a documentary on the Wild Atlantic Way. On Monday evening, Keating viited the Dr Crokes GAA clubhouse. He spent time on the pitch where he was taught how to play hurling by members of the senior team.

The visit lasted about three hours and coincided with a game between Dr. Crokes and Legion on the top field.

Minister Chambers in discussion with business owners ahead of budget Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers held a discussion at Gleneagle for business owners to voice their concerns ahead of next month’s budget.

The event, organised by Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill aimed to give business owners an opportunity to discuss items that might affect their business in the upcoming budget.

Tributes to Paudie O’Callaghan of the Fáilte Hotel

Fourteen families in Killarney are at risk of homelessness after eviction notices were issued.

The termination letters were sent by Xerico Ltd., a foreign landlord registered in Cyprus.

Every home in the Loreto Convent Estate has been served with a Notice of Termination which will make more than 40 people homeless. This includes infants, schoolchildren and people with disabilities.

Dorota Kowalczyk has lived in the estate for ten years and she described the situation as “very hard”.

“It’s a terrible thing to happen. We worry about it every day, especially for our children. We have loved living here; we love our neighbours. We looked after each other during Covid, we have barbecues, we celebrate birthdays, it’s our home.” She told the Killarney Advertiser.

The residents say that forcing dozens more people into homelessness is not just unethical, it damages the towns stability and economy.

They are urging the council to protect their families, safeguard their community, support local businesses and preserve Killarney’s heritage.

Paudie was widely recognised as a true gentleman and a cornerstone of Killarney’s business and social life. Minister Michael Healy-Rae TD paid personal tribute, saying: “Paudie was one of life’s true gentlemen, full of life, laughter, loyalty, and heart. He was a man who’d do anything for a friend, and I was blessed to count him as my very best. Even in difficult days, Paudie’s strength and spirit never left him.”

Minister Healy-Rae recalled meeting Paudie every Saturday in Killarney, walking the town together, meeting people, and enjoying the simple but meaningful moments that defined their friendship. He also noted the pride Paudie had in becoming a grandfather, a joy that brightened his final weeks.

Commerce said: “Paudie O’Callaghan played a very active and progressive role in the business life of Killarney and was always willing to lend a hand and contribute positively to whatever projects the town was engaged with.

He spearheaded the Killarney Vintners Association for many years and was a very able and influential representative for that sector. His enormous contribution to the sporting and social life of the town is already well documented, and he contributed hugely to the town he loved in so many ways.”

Shovels on the ground at last for N22 Farranfore–Killarney bypass There was a major development this week in the long-awaited N22 Farranfore to Killarney Bypass Project, as topographical surveys began along the preferred route — marking the first visible step towards delivering the long-discussed road scheme.

Presidential candidates hit the campaign trail in Killarney Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys and Fianna Fail candidate Jim Gavin overlapped on the campaign trail last week when they both travelled to Kerry. Both candidates began their journey in Killarney, making their way to Tralee and Listowel afterwards.

Heather Humphreys took a trip on a jaunting cart before heading to Muckross House where she was formally endorsed by Minister Michael HealyRae. She said she was proud to support Muckross House and the refurbishment of Killarney House during her tenure as Minister for Culture, adding,

"I was proud as Minister for Arts to work to ensure that Star Wars filming could take place on Skellig Michael which was a huge boost to the local tourism sector in Kerry. I want to use the Presidency to identify more opportunities like that for our country.”

Later, she visited St Francis Special School in Beaufort where she met with Principal Colin O’Sullivan and the students. Sean Kelly MEP stopped by to wish her well on the campaign.

Meanwhile, Jim Gavin met with voters while walking the streets of Killarney.

During a stop outside Mike’s Takeaway, he rolled up his sleeves to lend a hand.

The work began in Farranfore earlier this week and will move gradually toward Killarney over the coming weeks.

According to the Council, the surveys will cover both greenfield areas along the preferred corridor and sections of the existing N22 and adjoining local roads. These topographical studies will map the area in detail and are expected to take around three weeks to complete.

Director of Services Frank Hartnett told councillors that this is only the beginning of several key stages due to take place before the end of the year.

He confirmed that ground investigation works — the next major phase of the project — will begin on November 3, under a six-month contract.

The progress update was given during Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council.

When completed, the N22 Farran-

fore–Killarney Bypass will not only shorten journey times between Cork and Tralee but also enhance safety and support regional economic growth by providing a more efficient route for residents, tourists, and businesses.

For now, though, the sight of engineers and survey crews along the route marks a long-awaited milestone.

Photographer launches new book celebrating Kerry Killarney’s award-winning photographer Valerie O’Sullivan has released a striking new photographic book, On the Edge of Europe – Kerry, published by Currach Press.

The beautifully illustrated collection captures the people, places, and wild beauty of County Kerry, from the peaks of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the shores of the Atlantic.

Local landscapes within Killarney National Park feature strongly throughout the publication. Among the stories highlighted is that of Tommy Mullach

O’Sullivan of Ballyledder, who painstakingly dragged water from Lough Coimín Piast to build the highest grotto in Ireland on Cruach Mhór in 1975. He was posthumously honoured at a ceremony in Cronin’s Yard in July 2025 — exactly 50 years later.

Defined by the Atlantic Ocean, Kerry’s people and cultural heritage have shaped its landscape for thousands of years. Taoiseach pays tribute to hotelier Kay Randles A tribute to a remarkable Kerry businesswoman, who was one of the inspirational personalities in the Kerry and Irish hotel industry, has been unveiled by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

He marked the 60th anniversary of the Dromhall Hotel by unveiling a framed portrait of the late Kay Randles who, with her late husband Neil, founded the Muckross Road business in 1965.

The hotel is now run by the second generation of the Randles family and

proprietor, Bernadette Randles, described it as a very proud day for everybody associated with the company.

Close on 150 guests, including some of the hotel’s first employees, attended the landmark celebration. The Taoiseach said the story of the Randles family is very much the story of Killarney and it was an example of extraordinary entrepreneurial endeavour.

“Killarney has a very unique sense of getting things done and it is the one location that knows how to do tourism.

It’s in your DNA,” he said.

Plaque unveiled to mark 100 years since first East Kerry League Final The East Kerry GAA Board marked a major milestone on Sunday with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Flesk Bridge to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first East Kerry League Final.

The event was held at the historic site where Kilcummin and Killorglin contested the first-ever East Kerry League decider in 1925. That match,

played in the old “Cricket Field” behind Flesk Bridge on the Muckross Road, saw Kilcummin emerge victorious on a scoreline of 2-04 to 1-00 on Sunday, November 20, 1925.

Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady officially unveiled the plaque before a large crowd, which included representatives from every East Kerry club and a strong delegation from Kilcummin GAA Club.

Tree of Light star to honour Donal Grady A former Mayor of Killarney, who dedicated so much of his life to the town and its people, is to be honoured in a very special way this Christmas.

The feature star on the spectacular Tree of Light at St Mary’s Cathedral will take on an extra special meaning this year as it will be dedicated to the late Donal Grady, a long-serving local councillor who worked diligently and passionately for the community.

Donal, who passed away last in 2024, was a dedicated public representative

who was never reluctant to express an opinion and he worked with great passion and a real sense of purpose on behalf of his loyal supporters.

Through his work as a long-serving chief fire officer in Killarney, he helped so many families at a time when they most needed assistance and reassurance and he brought a great sense of calm and responsibility to the position.

Donal always put Killarney first. He loved the town and its people, he worked passionately on their behalf and he achieved so much and helped so many people.

Tricel founders bestowed with the town’s highest honour A husband and wife who built a hugely successful international business from humble beginnings in a shed at the rear of their home have been inducted into the Order of Inisfallen, the highest honour that Killarney can bestow.

Their remarkable success story was recognised at a ceremony in the historic Muckross House. When they moved to Killarney over 50 years ago, Moyvane native Con and his Ballyduff native wife, Anne, set up Killarney Plastics, having identified a market for fibre glass and glass enforced products.

The company later became global

engineering company Tricel, which currently employs 620 people, 200 of whom are based in Killarney. The company is now run by Con and Anne’s sons Michael, Con, Richard and Robert.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Johnny McGuire said , “No words of mine could adequately describe the impact the company has made, both as a manufacturer and as an employer of over 600 people.

“Everything Con and Anne Stack have achieved in business and in life can be attributed to their dignity, their dedication, their commitment, their will to succeed and their incredible work ethic.”

Seamus Kiely, a man ahead of his time, passes away The passing of retired businessman Seamus Kiely this week was widely felt across the Killarney area.

Mr Kiely was Kerry’s leading electrical goods and music trader for decades.

Mr Kiely first demonstrated his entrepreneurial skills by operating a bar in the old town hall ballroom. He also operated the legendary Hardy’s Nite Club, on College Street, where McSorley’s now stands.

In the late 1960s he opened a small record shop at the bottom of High Street.

Later Mr Kiely expanded this business to include televisions, radios, and

household appliances.

In their heyday, Kiely’s Electrical were the largest independent electrical retailer in Munster, employing over 40 staff across five stores (in Killarney, Tralee, Ennis and two in Limerick).

Mr Kiely was a founder member of Killarney Rotary Club, and fiercely proud of his Killarney roots.

Killarney Advertiser Managing Director Cormac Casey said: "I am saddened to learn of the death of Seamus Kiely, an entrepreneur, a loyal supporter of the Killarney Advertiser, a man of integrity to do business with and a man away ahead of his times."

Tributes paid as Den Joe’s co-founder and basketball stalwart is laid to rest

International Hotel has been sold!

The landmark International Hotel in Killarney has been sold, although the details of its new owner have not yet been confirmed.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that the property was purchased by a well-known local family already es-

tablished in the hotel and hospitality sector.

The 98-bedroom property, located in the centre of town next to the jarvey stand and a short walk from Killarney National Park, was placed on the market last September with a guide price of between €18 million and €20 million.

There has been widespread shock and sadness across the Killarney and Castleisland areas this week following the passing of Patricia (Pat) Keane O’Connor.

A well-known businesswoman and community figure, Pat was laid to rest on Thursday morning following Requiem Mass at Castleisland Parish Church.

Pat, who was in her 70s, passed away on Sunday, December 14, at University Hospital Kerry. She had been in intensive care following a single-vehicle collision on the N23 at Lisheenbaun on December 10.

To many in Killarney, Pat was a familiar and welcoming face as the co-founder of the popular Den Joe’s Family Restaurant.

Alongside Den Joe, she established the business in 1986, opening the original shop in Castleisland before expanding to New Street in Killarney.

Over the decades, she was known for her kindness to customers and for

providing many local young people with their first jobs.

Her impact on the local sporting community was equally significant.

St Paul’s Basketball Club in Killarney paid a heartfelt tribute, describing her as a "wonderful supporter" and a "proud and generous sponsor over many years."

Pat is survived by her children Julette, Vincent, and Denis, their father Den Joe, and her six grandchildren.

Kerry Airport gears up for a new year after record-breaking 2025 Kerry Airport is gearing up for another year of growth in 2026, with passenger numbers in 2025 on course to exceed 430,000 for the first time.

The Spring/Summer schedule will be launched in January with increased fre-

quency on routes to sun destinations in Spain and Portugal with Ryanair.

The Chief Financial Officer at Kerry Airport, Basil Sheerin, said the airport’s continued growth has been driven by the professionalism of their staff, with strong performances across fuel sales, retail and car-parking. He noted the full benefits of the new Arrivals Hall and extended Departures Area will be seen in 2026. According to Mr Sheerin, the main challenges in 2026 will continue to be attracting new airlines and routes.

Contributions start at a low level and increase gradually over time. During the first three years, the employee and employer will pay 1.5%

Employees have the option to opt out after 6 months; however, they will be automatically re-enrolled in 2 years if they remain eligible. The pension pot moves with the employees even if they change jobs. The aim of the scheme is to provide long-term financial security for workers as they reach retirement age.

Taxi drivers reveal strangest items left in taxis last year Ireland is Europe’s most distracted country. That’s according to Freenow by Lyft who has revealed that over 4,600 items were left in taxis during 2025.

Overall, 30% of all items lost across Europe were in Ireland. This was closely followed by Germany (17%), Spain (16%), Greece (15%) and the UK (9%) who all ranked in the top five most forgetful countries. Mobile phones topped the list of items left behind for the second year in a row, accounting for almost a third of all commonly forgotten items. Keys and bags came next with over 1,000 left in taxis during the past year. They were followed by wallets, glasses, and headphones. Over a hundred pieces of jewellery were also forgotten in taxis, with several engagement and wedding rings left behind during 2025. There was a musical theme to many of the items forgotten in taxis with items left behind in 2025 including a banjo, a concertina, a guitar and drumsticks. December is the busiest time for lost property requests, with passengers seemingly more forgetful over the festive period.

Community spirit in Kerry recognised Eight outstanding groups and individuals were recognised as the Fexco Kerry Heroes of 2025, celebrating exceptional community spirit, leadership, courage and service across the county.

The winners were announced on Kerry Today, where Jerry O’Sullivan spoke with each of the award recipients during a special programme honouring their contributions to Kerry life over the past year. The standard of nominations was exceptionally high. Every nomination received was deserving of recognition, making the task of selecting just eight award recipients a difficult one for the judging panel. The Fexco Kerry Heroes of 2025 are: Kerry Senior Football Team and Management, Forbairt na Dromada Teo, Jerh O’Donoghue, Founder of the Social

Action Group, Rathmore, Sean O’Sullivan, Dingle Coast Guard, Marian Barnes, Recovery Haven, Pádraig Kissane and Anthony O’Carroll. This is according to the latest edition of PTSB’s Reflecting Ireland research series, conducted by Core Research.

The findings in Munster is higher than the national average of 68% and is the second highest level of concern when compared with other regions surveyed (Dublin 68%, Rest of Leinster 64%, Connacht/Ulster 73%). The new research from PTSB also found that almost three quarters of Munster respondents (73%) are very concerned about AI’s impact on job security, a significant 11% increase year on year. Again, this is higher than the national average of 71%, and the second

highest level of concern when compared with other regions surveyed (Dublin 75%, Rest of Leinster 65%, Connacht/ Ulster 67%). Nationally, almost seven in 10 (68%) people are concerned that AI will lead to more sophisticated fraud next year, up from 62% last year. This finding mirrors a high level of concern in relation to fraud more generally, with those who believe financial fraud will become more sophisticated in 2026 rising to 69% from 65% in 2024. Males are significantly more likely to see AI developments as an opportunity, pointing to a potential gender gap emerging in technology adoption in Ireland. When asked if the pace of AI development represents an opportunity, more males (23%) agreed than females (14%).

School choir performs at Killarney Outlet Centre Pupils and staff from St Francis Special School in Beaufort held a Christmas concert at the Killarney Outlet Centre during the festive season.

The school choir sang a selection of their favourite Christmas songs for shoppers

on December 13 and attracted a very large crowd. The school said they were “blown away” by their students who “stole the show”. More than €2,700 was raised for the school. The performance was also live streamed and is available to view on their Facebook page.

wasn’t a coach; he saw no need for it.

But he was a leader as well as a manager, a man with a vision and the innate qualities to lead and manage individuals, moulding them into a cohesive winning team.

He used the same winning formula as

team manager in Kerry, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Clare. Even Dublin tried to get him early on before Heffo stepped in.

Thanks for all the valuable lessons learned, all wrapped up in delightful roguery.

In August, Adam Moynihan shared some fond memories of his friend and former teammate Jamie Doolan We managed to finally win the Kerry league in 2017 and my abiding memory of Jamie from that day was when Daithí Casey scored the winning goal late on. Jamie had been subbed off but that wasn't going to stop him from celebrating. He sprinted all the way across to the far corner of the pitch to be with the goalscorer. In fact, he made it to Daithí before a lot of the guys who were actually on the pitch at the time.

That win marked a special milestone for the old stock at the club – some of them had been waiting 52 years for it to happen – and Jamie understood the weight of the moment. He had tears in his eyes as we collected the trophy. It showed what sport meant to him.

All we spoke about was sport, really. He was a proud Evertonian and I suppose with me being a long-suffering Villa fan, we bonded over the shared hardship. He was exceptionally knowledgeable when it came to soccer and he was some man for the Premier League trivia. “Name six players who…” The next hour and a half would be spent racking your brain trying to remember obscure nineties footballers like Claus Lundekvam and Carl Leaburn. Some craic.

I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone so generous. He couldn’t do enough for you. When I got into vintage jerseys during Covid, Jamie dropped a bag of

his old gear up to the house. Valuable stuff. He flat out refused to take any money for it. “If you send me money, I’m just going to send it back to you.”

And he would say it so confidently and with such conviction, the conversation was over.

He was stubborn like that. He could convince you of anything. He would often tell us that he might not always be right, but he was never wrong. How can you argue with that?

Only last week I was speaking to someone about my future plans with my podcast. I said Jamie would be an ideal co-host if he’d be interested. Sadly we never had that conversation.

There were many conversations that we never had, and I regret not having all of them.

My heart goes out to Jamie’s parents, Eddie and Mags, his siblings Shane, Michelle and Chantal, his daughter Holly and to all his family and friends.

I hope they take comfort in knowing that regardless of whether we knew him for five minutes or for decades, his memory will live on with us forever. That’s just the kind of impression that Jamie Doolan made.

Brave Kerry defeated in camogie final In August, the Kerry camogie team did us all proud by reaching the final of the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship So near and yet so disappointing for the Kerry players and management at Croke Park on Sunday last, losing the All-Ireland Intermediate final to Offaly by 14 points to 11. No goals, and that is surprising.

Offaly were hot favourites but Kerry tested them all the way. Offaly shot

13 wides, but they were pressured by a tenacious Kerry defence.

Indeed, the crucial opportunity to score a goal made all the difference.

If Kerry had scored it, the cup might well have come to join the Sam Maguire for the next 12 months.

Máiréad Teahan and Grace Teehan

were the chief scorers for Offaly, while the brilliant Patrice Diggins showed all her experience, shooting eight points for Kerry.

The plus side of this defeat is that camogie is very much on the rise, and locally Killarney Camogie is doing tremendous work in recent years, developing young talent. That will reap dividends.

Dr Crokes had a very strong camogie team in the late thirties and forties, with prominent stars such as Nellie

Myers, Peg Murphy, and Rita Looney. Camogie faded away for several years until the late sixties when Paul O’Sullivan and Diarmuid Moynihan, both now deceased, trained Killarney Camogie to win the Kerry championship.

The tremendous enthusiasm of Mary Treacy kept it alive until she passed away and then came the upsurge of camogie in Killarney at all levels. Best of luck to all concerned in this great crusade.

Leahy helps Ireland to new national record In July, Killarney Valley AC woman Sarah Leahy played her part in a momentous achievement for Irish athletics Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy played her part on a historic occasion for Irish athletics as the women’s 4x100m relay team posted a new national record at the recent Diamond League meeting in London.

The Killarney Valley AC athlete combined with teammates Ciara Neville (Emerald AC), Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn AC) and Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) to clock a blistering time of 43.73 seconds, beating the previous record of 43.80 that had stood for the past seven years.

The Irish girls finished fourth in a bril-

liant race which was won by Great Britain. The quartet were running together for just the second time as they continue to prepare for next August’s European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Sarah Healy (UCD AC) finished third in the Women’s Mile; Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) finished fourth in the Women’s 200m, registering a season’s best time in the process; and in the Men’s 800m Mark English (Finn Valley AC) ran the third fastest time of his career on his way to seventh spot.

Kingdom Warrior Cronin lands light heavyweight title

After suffering some tough nights in his career as a boxer, the wheel finally turned for Kerryman Kevin Cronin last Friday night as he deservedly claimed the BUI Light Heavyweight title with victory over Cork’s Cathal Crowley.

Cronin has been the victim of some harsh calls along the way but he was all smiles at the National Stadium in Dublin after the judges gave him the decision following a bruising encounter.

The 29-year-old fighter, who is managed by Michael Conlon, was clearly ecstatic to claim the national belt.

Speaking to online boxing news channel Boxing Tickets NI, the Milltown native said it was a “happy night”.

“I’m delighted for my fans. I think I left out a lot of emotions there in the ring.

It wasn’t [just] because of how big this title is, it was more the journey it took to get it. I just needed to get over that wall for the bigger performances to come.”

The excellent win caps a year of impressive milestones for Cronin, who earlier in 2025 fought in Madison Square Garden and the 3 Arena.

Goals galore for Kerry girls in All-Ireland U16 final In July, a talented group of young Kerry footballers were crowned champions of Ireland after a dominant display against Mayo The Kerry U16 girls’ team were victorious in the All-Ireland ‘A’ final in Nenagh on Wednesday evening as they overcame Mayo on a scoreline of 4-17 to 0-5.

Lily Riordan, Kelsey Cummins, Leah Griffin and Julie O’Connor were amongst the goals for the Kingdom while Jessie Lynch added 0-7 in a fairly one-sided game that was effectively decided in the first half.

Tom O’Connor’s side led by 10 points at the break and by the end they had

managed to extend that lead to 24, with keeper Caoimhe O’Mahony securing her own clean sheet with a fine penalty save late on.

In April, Eamonn Fitzgerald spoke to St Paul’s coach James Fleming about his side’s tremendous win in the Women’s Super League semi-final The result of the weekend must surely be Utility Trust St Paul’s surprise Women’s Super League win over the highly rated Trinity Meteors of Dublin. It was a hectic finish as they clawed back a seven-point deficit in the closing stages.

So far, so good in the top grade, having won promotion after last year's great success.

Having also tamed The Cats, Wild and as they were, Paul’s coach James Fleming believes in his squad and says that if they can repeat that performance, they will be a match for any team in the country.

I spoke with James and asked how they managed to down the mighty Meteors in their Super League semi-final.

“However, our women were magnificent in clawing back that deficit. We got our just reward for a never-saydie mentality when Rheanne O'Shea

A stretch. A touch. A ripple of the net.

For a second, stunned Hungarian silence. Then manic Irish elation.

On the pitch, Ireland’s hat-trick hero Troy Parrott slid topless on his back, overcome with emotion as he was mobbed by teammates. In the stands, limbs flew and strangers grabbed and held each other tightly. Heads pounded from the roaring. Eyes welled up. In a word, it was beautiful.

Some time after the final whistle sounded, roles were reversed as the Irish players sat and watched the fans high up in the top tier of the Puskás Aréna. Soaking in the carnage. Nathan Collins, Jayson Molumby and Séamus

Went it went to 2-1, the away support remained boisterous and upbeat, but the chants were powered more by blind loyalty than any genuine belief.

As the minutes ticked away, getting one goal felt unlikely, let alone two.

But then Finn Azaz clipped a lovely through ball over the top and Parrott executed a classy, confident finish, looping the ball up and over Dénes Dibusz and down and under the crossbar to make it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go.

Even then, nabbing that crucial third goal seemed too fantastic, too un-

realistic, for Ireland. Things like this happen to other people. They don’t happen to us. Having toppled Portugal and given it a good lash against Hungary, the prospect of falling just short despite a valiant effort seemed just about right. As the match lurched into stoppage time, we turned to each other and agreed that at this stage we’d settle for one more chance. That would suffice. One more shot at glory.

With the five added minutes expired, one final heave by Caoimhín Kelleher and one almighty leap by Liam Scales gave us that chance. As the ball land-

This wasn’t just a playoff-securing win against all the odds. It was glorious redemption for possibly the most maligned Irish squad in history. For years they have been dismissed as not good enough and bereft of star quality.

They’re not in the States yet (despite the chants of USA, USA, USA that echoed around the concourse as fans exited the stadium), but, on one glorious night in Budapest, they showed us what they’re made of.

For a long time, we believed that things like this don’t happen to us. On one special day in Budapest, Troy and the boys showed us that they can.

Dan Okwute the hero as Kerry shock Sligo Rovers In September, Kerry FC upset all the odds by knocking Sligo Rovers out of the FAI Cup A tale of the unexpected and the unbelievable. Dreams merged into reality at Mounthawk Park last Friday night as the raucous home crowd celebrated a win that propelled Kerry FC into the last four of the prestigious FAI Cup. Three-nil down after 61 minutes, and then that amazing fightback. Heroes all, but none more so than super subs Daniel Okwute and Cian Brosnan.

They threw a life-saving ring into the murky waters and brought Kerry ashore to thunderous applause.

It surely ranks with Séamus Darby’s late goal for Offaly in the 1982 All-Ireland final. This time, the shoe was on the other foot for Kerry.

The League of Ireland’s newest team were very nervous and tentative in the

opening period, showing too much respect for Premier Division side Sligo Rovers. Owen Elding struck for two goals in as many minutes around the quarter-hour mark – disastrous for Kerry, or so the partisan supporters in the crowd around me felt.

Kerry manager Colin Healy responded by bringing in Cian Brosnan, and Brossie made a huge difference as he has done so often in the past. Still, it was a 0-2 deficit at the interval. What happened in the dressing room? Healy must have cut to the chase as we saw a different Kerry FC performance in that second half. They went at Sligo to give the natives some hope, but then Elding struck once more in the 61st minute to seemingly kill the tie as the contest.

Then the aforementioned Brosnan, who had been adventurous since coming on, picked up possession inside the box and curled a superb goal into the far corner. Kerry weren’t dead yet. Mounthawk Park rocked.

And I mean ‘rocked’.

Back to reality, and Matthew Connor had to make a great save to deny Elding his fourth goal. Kerry, emboldened by Brosnan’s strike, pushed forward and were awarded a 77th-minute penalty, which Joe Adams struck into the top corner. It could have been 4-1 but now it was 3-2, and the relentless Okwute nearly levelled the tie just minutes later, forcing a superb save from Sargeant.

Time was ticking away as Kerry drove forward for an equaliser. In the 90th minute, the eagle landed. A low cross whipped across the penalty area by Okwute found Brosnan, who converted from close range. The eruption in-

side Mounthawk Park was deafening.

Kerry had clawed back from the brink to level the tie at three goals apiece.

Extra-time beckoned.

The second interval provided an opportunity for Healy to deliver his message: carpe diem.

Penalties loomed large as neither side could break the deadlock, but the decisive moment came in the 116th minute. Adams, Seán McGrath, and Okwute created chaos in the Sligo penalty area. Fittingly, it fell to Okwute, who was involved in the previous three goals, and he adjusted to lash a half-volley into the net. 4-3.

Pandemonium ensued.

Could they hold out in those dying minutes? Yes, they could. Not the Fairytale of New York, but the Fairytale of Mounthawk.

Okwute was Man of the Match. A hero amongst heroes.

Kerry claimed their 39th All-Ireland football title in style on Sunday as they outplayed and outfoxed Ulster champions Donegal en route to an emphatic 10-point win.

With the peerless playmaker Paudie Clifford pulling the strings (he had 76 possessions in total) and Gavin White, Joe O’Connor and Seánie O’Shea doing the legwork, Jack O’Connor’s Kingdom dismantled Jim McGuinness’ much vaunted zonal defence with remarkable precision and poise.

When gaps weren’t found inside, patience was shown outside, and then greatness did its thing. Yet again David Clifford was absolutely sensational, racking up 0-9 from play in another legendary display.

He took centre stage in the first half, firing over a beautiful two-pointer with his first touch to make it 7-3 and then repeating the trick three minutes

Billy O'Sullivan shares his story

Two-thirds of students won't share online activity with parents teenagers.

I found this interesting as the legal age to create an account on most social media platforms is 13.

Billy O’Sullivan works with Heartbeat Killarney, a voluntary cardiac support group for those with heart disease.

It is run by heart patients and carers, and is aimed at helping people to return to a normal life afterwards. Billy is encouraging men to monitor their health by attending regular check-ups. Every week in the month of January, we will share articles from Heartbeat Killarney which will provide more information on how to look after yourself. This week, Billy shares his story with us.

Billy first noticed mobility issues in 1999.

While walking, he would plan deliberate stops along his route to make it seem normal, he assumed it was down to being overweight. He said: “I blamed the tightness in my chest to tension and stress. An odd time I would have a tightness in my wrists, but I put that down to lifting things too heavy for me. I muddled along this way for a year or so until I started to get severe indigestion after a bout of tension in my chest.”

Billy went to the pharmacy to obtain medication for his indigestion, and the pharmacist saw his condition first-hand.

She advised him to go straight to the doctor. Billy described that moment as a wake-up call.

The pharmacist rang his doctor who saw him immediately, and Billy believes that phone call saved his life. He said: “An ECG was done, an anomaly spotted, and an appointment was booked with a Cardiologist who told me I had blockages in my veins and that an angiogram was needed.”

feel any anxiety waiting for his appointment. He explained: “I had the Angiogram and was referred to a heart surgeon who told me I needed surgery and would get an appointment in three months. In the meantime, I was to follow his instructions on how to keep my heart safe and got an emergency number to call if needed.”

This happened around the end of November; Billy wanted a family Christmas before his stay in hospital. In early December, he got a phone call asking if he would like his operation earlier due to a cancellation. He accepted it! Billy had his triple heart bypass and was home in time for Christmas.

Heartbeat Killarney is planning a special meeting and clinic on Tuesday, January 27. Billy is inviting men from 30 plus to attend on the night and learn more about how to look after their health.

I conducted a survey among my school peers to learn about their online habits. I focused on their social media usage, gaming activity, and whether they had ever spent money on video games or social media apps before.

Conducting these types of surveys can help parents understand their children more, it gives them a better understanding of their online activity and how they spent their time.

I was very curious if they had ever spent money on video games and if so, how much. I found that 86% of my peers had spent money on a video game at least once. When asked how much, 46% of those said they spent a lot of money.

Additionally, 60% of them said they would not share their online activity with their parents while another 46% revealed they often talk to new people online.

My findings also revealed that people start using social media at a very young age. 40% reported they were between the ages of 5 and 8 when they were first online, meanwhile another 40% were between the ages of 9 and 12.

My other findings included the following: What is your favourite thing to do?

• Using social media was the most popular activity with 30% enjoying it the most.

• Another 26% said they preferred to play video games.

• 13% said they like to watch regular television programmes while another 20% prefer to watch movies.

What social media apps do you use?

• TikTok was by far the most popular social media platform, with more than half (56%) saying it was their favourite.

• 30% reported Instagram as their preferred app, while another 26% said they use Snapchat more frequently.

• Youtube ranked similarly to Snapchat with 26% saying it was their favourite, and 13% said they preferred other apps that were not listed on the survey.

What games do you prefer?

• Roblox was the most popular game overall.

• 30% picked Minecraft as their favourite.

• 13% like Fortnite the best while another 13% preferred Overwatch.

How much time do you spent online?

• 40% of my peers spent more than 5 hours online, while another 30% spent exactly 5 hours per day.

• 13% spent 3 – 4 hours on the internet, which was the lowest amount of time surveyed.

In conclusion, I found that there is a big problem with social media among my age group. Children are going online at a very young age and do not take their online safety seriously. I think it is important for parents to understand what their children are doing online and to ensure they educate them about the dangers of the cyber-world.

McElligott family honoured as Duggan collects county prize at Kerry awards night Maurice and Lorraine McElligott were presented with one of the most prestigious honours in Kerry rallying at the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship awards night, held at The Anvil Bar in Keel just before the Christmas break.

The Kerry Motor Club husband and wife duo received the Paudie Casey Memorial Trophy, awarded to the person or persons deemed to have made the greatest contribution to motorsport in the county.

The recipient is selected by the championship organisers following nominations from both Kerry Motor Club and Killarney and District Motor Club, with the winner kept confidential until the announcement on the night.

The presentation took place alongside the formal presentation of the 2025 Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship awards. Rob Duggan was confirmed as overall county

champion, for the second time, following the conclusion of the season at the Killarney Historic Rally, edging out Colin O’Donoghue on a tie-break after both finished level on points.

As part of his championship success, Duggan was also presented with a free entry to the new for 2026 Kerry Summer Rally, thanks to championship sponsor Mike Moriarty.

Historic champion Fergus O’Meara and Ladies’ champion Michelle Hickey were also among the winners recognised on the night, which marked the end of another competitive season for the only county rally championship in Ireland.

An evolutionary step forward, or backwards?

My name is Kuba Kierzkowski, I’m 19 years old and I am a college student in Kerry College in Tralee where I study Digital Media Production. For my work experience, over the course of ten weeks I am working in journalism and writing articles for the Killarney Advertiser. This week I am writing about AI. INTRODUCTION

A spark of endless debates just like the generative artificial intelligences themselves, with the onslaught of questions about various concerns over artificial intelligence and its impact on the world; is it helpful? Or rather, harmful? Do the pros outweigh the cons in what is trying to deliver? Or was the intention to tear us up, even more than we already have before?

RISE INTO PROMINENCE

The early 2020’s marked the beginning of artificial intelligence popping into discussions thanks to the release of applications and software such as DALL-E and ChatGPT; where text (prompts) is

fed into the machine, which undergo the process stage, and then return with an answer with a table of contents. Certain software, like Stable Diffusion or Craiyon AI, would use a similar way of using prompts, but instead to distribute artificially generated imagery. While this software was new or had just arrived at a stage where they were publicly made available for a brief period, collecting data with the intention of improving and learning further. It wasn’t as alarming, but it sure did raise a lot of arguments by the capabilities the machines possessed at the time, what would they soon accomplish with how fast they were gaining and studying the feedback. A point can be made that artificial intelligence has been serving us since its debut in the 1950’s, the likes of search engines like Google or Bing using patterns to find the correct site from the given information. But people tend to forget that: the human brain was more dominant than the artificial one, however, now that we have let AI grow and develop at a rapid pace: have the tables turned on us? Has the artificial brain become the dominant one?

ARTIFICIAL FEVER

With the several model advancements over the years, ChatGPT has been more prevalent than ever: swifter process time, broader and in-depth solutions. It would seem like it didn’t take much time for the software to evolve, which might have worried not only people, but the

industries too. With ChatGPT’s rise in knowledge, came the sudden craze of companies investing and funding in artificial intelligence; forcing it into their new products in the form of AI Assistants, AI Tools (like Google Gemini) or features that use artificial intelligence like image generation, the weird and often questionable AI chats such as c.ai being more prominent in the advertising: wherever you go, whichever application or software you might be using right now, it might have been already tapped to artificial intelligence.

IMPACTS OF USE

Have you ever used an app like ChatGPT? Even if you haven’t, you might have seen or heard how it operates. One might saywith how rapidly the software can deliver a cleverly structured response, like a formal essay or a profound solution to a problem. it almost it feels, like cheating.

Then there’s the question of authenticity; artificially generated imagery using popular art styles, like Studio Ghibli: normally it takes years to master such style like Ghibli.

AI requires only few seconds to get a piece in that style done, free of charge with no additional resources. But if that’s the advantage it has, why does it require extensive use of resources such as electricity to operate and water to cool down? A person might have a stable source of income through creation of content, but said content is generated

by generative AI. In other words: earning through ‘AI art’ developed out of thin air, almost effortlessly. Same goes with gifs and animation, putting on a sales tag on generated characters, characters that were created with the help of a tool used for brainstorming and creating templates. What about the wide-spread use of it in everyday tasks, down to the most basic of decision making? Doesn’t it feel wrong to depend on a software to do the work for you? On top of it actively harming the environment the more you use it.

The truth is, artificial intelligence doesn’t understand between the right and wrong; it doesn’t have a concept of understanding morals, whether the actions one might perform using it may be unethical or even criminal: It. Does. Not. Care.

CONCLUSION

Even if the conceptualisation of artificial intelligence was deliberate, its early forms didn’t pose much as a threat, rather as a bright shine into what it could become of it in the future. Decades rolling by, with superior upgrades abandoning the heavy, clunky pieces. From stationary to mobile devices. Even if the creator was human, modern artificial intelligence does not possess the capabilities a person might have artificial intelligence knows no boundaries, artificial intelligence does not know when to stop, it will only continue to operate if we allow it to consume more of our resources.

Kerry Coaches celebrates their long-serving staff

Over 130 members of the Kerry Coaches team gathered at Harrow Restaurant recently to celebrate staff members who have served the company over the past four decades.

The event, held ahead of the Christmas break, saw 45 service awards presented across three categories. These included recognitions for over 10 years and 20 years of service. Notably, 12 drivers were honoured for working with the company for between 30 and 40 years.

Each recipient was presented with a commemorative gift and a personalised photograph of a scenic Kerry location.

The awards were presented by Mike Buckley, Johnny Buckley, and Veerpal Yadav.

Now in its 68th year, the company used

the evening to highlight its team culture and the loyalty of its long-term staff.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

The evening included a surprise for Kerry Coaches founder Mike Buckley, who was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Accreditation for Services to Tourism.

The award was adjudicated by the All-Ireland Business Foundation. It recognises Buckley’s career and his contribution to the Irish travel and tourism industry through decades of leadership at the Killarney-based firm.

A whole new ball game Celts to join newly created FAI National League Killarney Celtic have been confirmed as one of the 15 founding members of the FAI’s new National League, which will kick off in autumn 2026.

The groundbreaking division of men’s senior soccer creates a direct pathway between the grassroots game and the League of Ireland for the first time.

“We are pleased to announce that our application to be part of the new Football Association of Ireland (FAI) National League has been successful,” Celtic said.

Clubs still interested in joining the league have a final opportunity to register their interest.

FAI Head of Competitions Fran Gavin said: “We're delighted to be able to announce the clubs who will be the founding members of the new FAI National League, and we congratulate them on coming through a rigorous selection process. The clubs have put in a lot of hard work and we're really excited to get started in autumn 2026.”

Kingdom swoop for Bray captain Kilian Cantwell Kerry FC have announced the signing of Bray Wanderers captain Kilian Cantwell ahead of the 2026 season, which gets underway on February 13.

All-Ireland champs Kerry crowned Team of the Year After bringing Sam Maguire home again following a series of spectacular performances last summer, the Kerry footballers have been named Team of the Year at the 2025 RTÉ Sport Awards.

Paul Murphy, Joe O’Connor and Seánie O’Shea were on hand to accept the prestigious award on behalf of the panel, with the latter paying tribute to the role the supporters played during the All-Ireland series in particular.

“It was great to see the colour up in Croke Park,” O’Shea said. “We really appreciate the support we got this year.

David Clifford and Paul Geaney made a call to the supporters to get behind us for the Armagh game after what happened last year, losing in extra time.

[We needed] any little help we could get from them to help us reverse that result.

“They certainly got behind us in their droves and it created a great bond between us. Hopefully we’ll drive that on again next year.”

Rory McIlroy, who became the sixth man in history to win golf’s Grand Slam of all four major championships when he won the Masters in April, was named RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year for the third time.

Swimmer John Shortt was declared Young Sportsperson of the Year, while Stephen Bradley of Shamrock Rovers claimed the Manager of the Year award.

| By Enda Walshe If you were looking for drama, thrills and spills, the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre was the place to be on Sunday as two sides served up a high-quality encounter with a finish that would be hard to match.

This was two top quality Super League sides going at it hammer and tongs with every ball and call contested. St Paul’s were superb in the first half, especially in the second quarter which helped them to build up an 11-point lead.

But the Wildcats, in a testament to the side that they are, came roaring back in the second half and actually led by ten and looked likely winners with just over two minutes to go. They were still seven clear with a minute on the clock but the drama was only starting.

Sanija Brikmane had missed two free throws to extend out the lead and in the next attack Tara Cousins drained a three following crucial offensive rebounds by Maisie Burnham and Lovisa Hevinder. That cut the gap to four and then St Paul’s succeeded in forcing both a turnover and foul on the Wildcats next offence.

Up stepped Burnham to nervelessly score both and reduce the gap to two, 85-83. You could cut the tension with a knife in the gym as James Fleming's side went in search of an equaliser.

With sixteen seconds on the clock they had possession and the ball found its way to Cousins again. She had been effective at cutting to the basket and she did so again, putting up a shot with four seconds to go. It seemed to dangle for an age over the rim, contemplating whether to go in or not, before eventually sinking to the roars of the partisan Killarney crowd.

There was still 2.1 seconds to play and the Wildcats would have possession. But with too short a timespan, the shot was forced and the game entered overtime.

Truth be told there would only be one winner in added time as all the momentum was with the home side. Lorraine Scanlon and Tiarra Brown exchanged early baskets before Burnham nailed a

couple of free throws. That set the scene for the winning moments as Leah McMahon and Lovisa Hevinder hit two massive outside shots, and Brown fouled out.

Now ahead by eight, one would have thought the game was safe, but Alyssa Frescas hit two threes of her own to squeeze up the game. However, as it had been throughout overtime, the home defence stood strong with Burnham leading the resistance.

With other results going their way, St Paul’s now sit in second again, just a game behind Killester, who lost to the Liffey Celtics. It's all to play for heading into 2026.

Elsewhere, the St Paul’s men’s team (aka the Lakers) ended the year with a fifth straight win as they defeated Moycullen 64-76 in Galway. The home side made a strong start to the first quarter but Jack O’Sullivan continued his recent good form by giving his side a leg up and that helped them into a 22-19 lead. They went to win or at least gain parity in the remaining three quarters and for the most part they were relatively comfortable.

Point guard Stephen Kelly again led the St Paul’s effort. His 26 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists fell agonisingly short of a triple-double, but it's that kind of form that helps a team win games.

And while not every shot fell for Sam Grant, he still recorded a double-double and his threes were well-timed. His rebounding was central to quelling any Moycullen second chances and, in this regard, Eoin Carroll was also outstanding. When you factor in 16 points it was another good night in the office for the Lakers captain.

Minus Rui Saraiva, Marko Bencic and Pablo Murcia, the full strength of the squad was needed and the two Adams – Whitty and O’Neill – again saw court time. Mark Sheehan and Oisín Spring put their shoulders to the wheel; the former had six points and rebounds and the latter played with his usual gusto.

The win sees the Lakers in playoff territory heading into 2026 and Coach Luke O'Hea must take serious credit for the way he has shape-shifted his side in recent weeks.

Sam Maguire joins charity walk for Kerry Mountain Rescue Over 400 walkers took part in a charity walk along the Old Kenmare Road on Saturday last, with the Sam Maguire Cup carried across the mountains in aid of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team.

The 17km trek along the old Kenmare

Road in the National Park was organised

by Derry Healy and John Hussey of Kerry Mountain Rescue and supporters.

The event was inspired by Killarney man James Cahill, who was rescued by KMRT after a serious fall on Carrauntoohil in 2016.
