Tenants of the Loreto Convent Estate in Killarney are set
to stage a protest at a meeting of Kerry County Council in Tralee on November 24.
The protest, organised in conjunction with the tenants' union CATU (Community Action Tenants Union), is demanding an immediate end to the threatened evictions that could leave 14 families homeless.
The eviction threat comes from Xerico LTD, a subsidiary of the LRC Group, which manages the properties.
The tenants and CATU are calling on the Government to provide emergency funding to Kerry County Council to allow the local authority to purchase the property for use as social or Cost Rental housing.
CATU members plan to attend the KCC budget meeting on November 24 to speak to councillors and request their support for the demands.
The plight of the residents was formally raised at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting by two councillors, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae and Cllr Brendan Cronin.
Cllr Healy-Rae asked for an update on the Loreto Chapel Estate where all residents are facing eviction, while Cllr. Cronin asked what actions Kerry County Council has taken to assist the 14 families affected

by the eviction notices.
Kerry County Council responded, acknowledging the issue at the private development and confirming a housing clinic was arranged for residents on November 4 and 5. Those who attended received advice on potential housing solutions based on their individual circumstances.
The Council confirmed it will explore both the Tenant in Situ Scheme and the Cost Rental Tenant in Situ Scheme where applicable. However, the reply noted
Construction on the inner relief road at Bohereen na Gabhann is now anticipated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to Kerry County Council.
The timeline was confirmed in documents issued at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting after Councillor Niall Kelleher put forward a motion about when the Bohereen na Gabhann link road would be built. The official Council document stated that the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the project has been confirmed. Kerry County Council is now progressing through the necessary approval gates as set out in the infra-
structure guidelines. The start of construction is "anticipated... in Q4 2026," subject to the final approval of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).
The proposed inner relief road is designed to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in the town centre. It will link New Street and High Street via Bohereen na Gabhann, enabling traffic from New Street to access the top of High Street via Monsignor O'Flaherty Road, effectively bypassing the most congested parts of the town centre. The project, which was publicly unveiled in January 2022, is a key strategic goal for Killarney.
that for the Tenant in Situ scheme to be considered, all other housing solutions must be exhausted, the landlord must be willing to sell to the Council, and the tenants must be in receipt of social housing supports. The Council also plans to contact Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) to explore other options.
Michael Sheehan, CATU’s Munster organiser, expressed deep concern over the evictions: "It is unacceptable that Xerico/LRC can evict tenants in the pursuit of profits with no regards for ten-
ants' wellbeing or the wider community. We are requesting that the government step in with emergency funding for Kerry County Council, so they can purchase the homes to be used as social housing/Cost rentals."
CATU Kerry is urgently appealing to the community to join the protest on the 23rd, stating, “It is unacceptable that tenants are forced at a whim to up sticks and move their entire lives so an international investment fund can make a little more profit.”

BIIRD, the all-female supergroup redefining Irish traditional music, is set to perform a headline show at the Gleneagle Arena in Killarney on May 8, next.
The group, which formed last year, has rapidly gained attention for its energetic performances and blend of traditional sounds with a modern approach. Since appearing on the Late Late Show in February 2025, BIIRD has sold out every date on its debut Irish and UK tour, including an upgraded show at Vicar Street, all before releasing any music.
This momentum continued with a suc-
cessful Mainstage performance at the All Together Now festival in front of 15,000 fans. Now signed with Primary Talent, BIIRD is planning extensive tours in Ireland, the UK, and the US for 2026. BIIRD’s line-up features Lisa Canny on harp, banjo and vocals; Laura Doherty on fiddle and guitar; Zoran Donohoe on concertina; Sal Heneghan on fiddle and harp; Miadhachlughain O’Donnell on flute and vocals; Nicole Lonergan on fiddle; Niamh Hinchy on vocals and synth; Aoife Kelly on cello; Ciara Ní Mhurchú on fiddle; Hannah Hiemstra on drums; and Claire Loughran on fiddle and harp.
The Rotary Club of Killarney has announced details of its 22nd Annual Wine and Art Night, which takes place on November 26, at the Great Southern Killarney.

The popular fundraiser, one of the longest-running events on the Killarney social calendar, is organised in partnership with Daly’s SuperValu, Cronin’s Cider and Killarney Credit Union.
This year’s proceeds will benefit a range of local schools and community organisations including Faha, Fossa, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Knockanes, Loughquittane and St. Brendan’s College, as well as Kerry Stars, Killarney Athletic AFC, Killarney Valley AC, Killorglin Family Resource Centre and the Rise & Shine Trust (formerly the Irish Pilgrimage Trust).
Tickets, priced at €25, are available through these groups or at the door on the night. Doors open at 7.15pm, and all ticket holders will be entered into a draw for prizes sponsored by The Scally Collection, MD O’Shea’s, and O'Callaghan Town & Country Real Estate.
Club President Sherry O’Callaghan said the event continues to thrive thanks to the ongoing support of local partners and the community.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who helps make this event possible, our Rotar-
ians, our hosts at the Great Southern, and the many sponsors who come on board year after year,” she said. “Most of all, thank you to the people of Killarney who turn out in such large numbers to support us. Your generosity helps us make a real difference in our community.”
The event also offers a platform for local artists and craftspeople to showcase their work, with some taking part since the very first Wine and Art Night. A limited number of spaces remain available, and interested artists can contact killarneyrotarywineandart@gmail.com.
Among the pieces featured this year are works by artist Tetiana Teslyeva, along with a framed Kerry GAA jersey, kindly prepared by John Treloar of the Killarney Frame Shop, which will be included in the live auction.
The Kerry Stars will operate the cloakroom, the Rise & Shine Trust will host a raffle, and the Kerry Hospice Foundation will have Christmas cards for sale. Music on the night will be provided by Mike Neeson.

Killarney Musical Society is proudly preparing to stage the high-energy musical All Shook Up! at the Gleneagle Arena next February.
The society has adjusted its schedule this year, moving the show dates to February 10, 11, and 12, earlier than the traditional March slot.
While many know the show features the iconic music of Elvis Presley, audiences may wonder what the story is about.
Set in a small Midwest American town in the summer of 1955, the plot revolves around several intertwining love stories ignited by the arrival of a charismatic rebel named Chad.
The story begins with young Natalie, a mechanic yearning to escape her small town life.
When Chad’s motorcycle breaks down at her garage, she instantly falls for him.
To try and get closer, Natalie disguises herself as a male friend named 'Ed'.
The romantic complications quickly es-
calate: Chad becomes smitten with the beautiful museum curator, Miss Sandra.
Unbeknownst to Chad, Miss Sandra starts to take a liking to 'Ed'.
Simultaneously, a classic Romeo and Juliet-style romance unfolds between two young lovers kept apart by the boy's mother, the strict Mayor of the town, who aims to halt all romantic activity.
The production promises a fun journey as the various relationships twist and turn. Audiences are invited to buckle up and enjoy the ride through timeless Elvis hits, including classics such as Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, and Jailhouse Rock, among many others.
Tickets for All Shook Up! are available now and can be purchased from the Gleneagle Arena Box Office or online via Ticketmaster.

The annual Killarney Memory Tree will once again illuminate the town this Christmas season, Holy Cross Mercy National School has confirmed.
The initiative is a vital fundraiser for the school, and organisers have thanked the public for their support in previous years.
The lights on the Memory Tree will be lit throughout the Christmas period to commemorate loved ones.
To officially mark the start of the fundraiser, the ‘Switch On’ ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 2, at 7pm. The event will feature prayers led by Fr
Vitalis Barasa, along with festive carols by candlelight. All members of the public are welcome to attend.
In addition to the lighting ceremony, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for all those being commemorated by the Memory Tree.
Mass will take place on Tuesday, December 16, at 1.10pm in St Mary’s Cathedral. The Memory Tree will remain lit nightly throughout the Christmas season until January 6, the Feast of The Epiphany. Lights for the Memory Tree can be purchased from the staff and pupils of Holy Cross Mercy School, or directly from the School Office located on New Road.

Regular users of the Coolcorcoran Junction leading onto the N22 Killarney Bypass will be reassured to learn that safety improvements are planned for the area.
The issue of the junction's layout and its impact on safety was raised at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting by Councillor Martin Grady. Cllr Grady called for the extension of the left-hand lane at the Kilcummin Junction (L-2033) onto the N22 By-Pass, noting that vehicles are currently mounting the footpath during peak traffic times, creating a hazard for pedestrians and other road users.
In response, Kerry County Council confirmed that plans are in place for a significant upgrade of the L2033 link to the N22.
This work will form part of a wider safety and road improvement project planned for the N22 Killarney By-pass and surrounding roads.
The Council also stated that it will immediately investigate the feasibility of extending the left turn lane on the L2033 approach to the N22 as an interim measure.
This is intended to improve safety while the larger, long-term project is being developed.

Oh you better watch out and you better be good for goodness sake, because Santa Claus is coming to town!
And excitement will reach fever pitch when his sleigh touches down in the car park of Killarney Outlet Centre, which is one of big man’s favourite places in the lead up to Christmas every year. He has made his list. He has checked it twice. And the great news is that a visit to Killarney is right there at the very top of his priorities.
Even better news is that there will be no charge to meet and greet Santa, no booking is necessary and there will be an opportunity to take a selfie as a souvenir of the great occasion.
Families are encouraged to bring their own cameras to capture the moment. They are assured that there will be gifts galore in the local stores at fabulous prices and all under one roof during their visit, and centre gift vouchers will be available for use in all stores.

“Luckily, he is very familiar with just how magical the town is at this time of the year so he was only too delighted to get a chance to meet all the boys and girls and their families and friends,” he added.

Mastergeeha FC Under 12s have powered through to the fourth round of the SFAI National Cup following a decisive home victory over Killavilla from Tipperary at Kilbrean Park last Saturday.
The match, played in torrential rain, saw strong support from parents and friends despite the tough conditions. Mastergeeha scored early, 14 minutes in, following superb build-up play. Sean Breen in midfield delivered a through ball to Josh O’Sullivan, who found Oliver Stachowiak. Stachowiak rounded the keeper to score in the bottom right corner.
Oliver Stachowiak struck again five minutes later, pressing the opposition keeper on a kick-out to win possession and tap it home, putting Mastergeeha up 2-0.
The Mastergeeha defence was outstanding throughout the physical game, with Josh O’Sullivan, Thomas Corkery, and Nathan Cronin singled out for their composure and dominance. Goalkeeper Ronan O’Leary was excellent in goal. In midfield, Sean Breen and Ronan O’Neill dictated the play, while Dara O’Keeffe
and Dara Burchill pressed hard on the wings.
Killavilla pulled a goal back in the 42nd minute from a free kick, making the score 2-1.
However, Oliver Stachowiak completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute. Dara Burchill attacked down the left wing, beating the right back and slipping a ball through to Stachowiak, who ran half the field and finished clinically to secure the 3-1 victory for Mastergeeha.
Man of the Match was awarded to Oliver Stachowiak for his hat-trick performance. The team's overall strong defence included Nathan Cronin, Josh Sullivan, Thomas Corkery, Conor McCarthy, Aidan McGuire, and Ronan O’Leary. The midfield and strike force were also praised for their dominating performance and work rate.
The Mastergeeha committee provided a much-appreciated spread of hot food, sandwiches, and refreshments for both teams and families after the match.

The Hegarty Irish Dance Academy achieved significant success at the An Chomhdháil Munster Irish Dancing Championships 2025, held recently at the Towers Hotel in Waterford.
The highlight of the weekend was the victory secured by Isabelle Hindle in the U14 Munster Open Championship, earning her the title of Munster Champion. The academy’s dancers, guided by teachers Maureen and Lisa Hegarty, performed strongly across various competitions, returning home with a large number of trophies and medals. Both teachers expressed great pride in their students' achievements, highlighting the team spirit and enthusiasm displayed by every dancer throughout the weekend.
"We’re thrilled with how our dancers
performed," said Maureen and Lisa. "We couldn’t ask for a better reflection of what our academy stands for.”
With bases in Killarney and Cork, the Hegarty Irish Dance Academy offers both competitive and recreational classes to dancers of all ages and abilities.
Looking ahead, the academy is focusing on upcoming competitions and events.
Most notably, Isabelle Hindle and Máire Lynch will represent the Hegarty Irish Dance Academy at the World Irish Dancing Championships. This prestigious event will take place at the INEC, Killarney, over Easter 2025.
Minister of State for Forestry, Horticulture and Farm Safety, Michael Healy-Rae TD, has called for urgent action to amend Government proposals on short-term letting (STL), warning that current plans could severely damage the rural tourism sector.
Speaking on Tuesday as he opened the Irish Self-Catering Federation (ISCF) Conference in Spanish Point, Co. Clare, Minister Healy-Rae highlighted his "deep concern" that the proposed regulations could "undo decades of good work and destroy viable family-run businesses."
The Minister stressed the importance of the sector, noting that the self-catering industry provides over 40% of Ireland’s tourism beds, most of which are located in rural towns and villages, according to Fáilte Ireland.
Minister Healy-Rae specifically reiterated
his strong opposition to the proposal that would require all STL operators to apply for full planning permission and would effectively block new permissions in towns with populations over 10,000.
“This one-size-fits-all approach makes no sense," he stated. "Places like Killarney, Dungarvan, Ballina and Tramore will be hit hard and the reality is that these properties will not return to the long-term rental market. They were never part of it to begin with.”
“We have a housing crisis, but you are not the problem and neither are you the solution,” the Minister said, adding that the self-catering industry is “under-valued by politicians and the general public” and that there remains “a serious lack of awareness within government about the importance of this issue.”

Students and staff at St Brendan’s College gathered this week to celebrate Stand Up Awareness Week, focusing on the themes of belonging, kindness, and respect.
The initiative encourages schools, Youthreach centres, and youth services across Ireland to take a stand against homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying. The week highlights the importance of creating inclusive spaces where LGBTQ+ young people feel safe and sup-
ported. Recent figures show that one in five LGBTQ+ young people in Ireland experience bullying, while 76% report feeling unsafe at school. Stand Up Awareness Week aims to change that through education, visibility, and community action.
This is the second year of the Stand Up Awareness Week Awards, which recognise schools and organisations for their efforts to promote inclusion and equality. Entries for the 2025 awards open this week.

"We are fundraising hard for a sensory garden for all children. It would mean so much to our children to have this facility at school and the Parents Association have been fantastic in raising as much funds as they can, so every little
bit helps."

Killarney Camera Club commenced its new season with a competition that featured an impressive display of creativity and technical skill from its members.
Maryann Heidtke secured the runner-up position in the Novice category with her striking photograph titled, Sand Dune “Big Daddy”.
Captured in the vast Namib Desert of Namibia, Maryann’s image is a masterclass in minimalism. The photograph features the sweeping red curve of a towering sand dune set against a vibrant, cloudless blue sky. The powerful sense of scale and solitude in the scene is emphasised by the presence of three small figures near the ridge, who are pictured gazing over the edge of the dune. Commenting on the award-winning
shot, Maryann said: "While on a photographic holiday in Namibia, we visited Namib-Naukluft National Park where one of Namibia’s biggest sand dunes, named Big Daddy, can be found. It was a particularly busy day with tourists making their way to the summit."
She explained how the image came together: "I saw through my zoom lens this simple composition – three people standing on the edge, tiny against the scale of it all, one of them on their knees peering over the side. I was lucky to capture that moment of curiosity on a golden mountain of sand under Africa’s amazing blue sky.”
The Killarney Camera Club welcomes all new members. You can find more details and images on their website: www.killarneycameraclub.ie

An evening focusing on inspiration and mental health drew a large audience to the Killarney Avenue Hotel last week.
John Lonergan, the former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, delivered a powerful talk titled 'Mental Health and Well-being – Reflections from his Life and Work.'
The event was hosted by Torc Community and Family Resource Centre (CFRC), in partnership with its Social Prescribing Service, which is supported by the HSE. Attendees from across the Killarney area gathered to hear Lonergan’s insights. Lonergan’s address blended humour, warmth, and deep humanity as he shared key lessons learned throughout his long career in the Irish Prison Service and his ongoing community work. He spoke candidly about the mental health issues faced by inmates, emphasising the necessity of empathy, understanding, and resilience – lessons he noted apply to everyone’s daily life.
"Happiness and contentment aren’t about what we own or achieve – they’re about our relationships, our sense of purpose, and the kindness we show to

The audience praised the evening as both informative and entertaining, highlighting Lonergan’s ability to link real-life stories to broader reflections on personal well-being and social responsibility.
Derek O'Leary, Manager of Torc CFRC, spoke following the event: “We were delighted to host John Lonergan once again for what was a truly memorable evening. A formal call for a multi-annual project to restore Killarney's historic laneways was made at Wednesday's Killarney Municipal District meeting.
Councillor John O’Donoghue formally proposed that due to their historical significance, Kerry County Council should formulate and implement a multi-annual restoration project for the laneways across Killarney Town.
In response, Kerry County Council confirmed that the restoration of these laneways is already a key component of its current planning work. The Council stated that during 2024, it secured funding
under the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme (THRIVE) to develop an Integrated Urban Strategy for Killarney town.
The strategy, which is now nearing its final stage of completion, officially recognises the historical and cultural importance of the town’s laneways. The Council confirmed that the next phase of work will focus on identifying priority laneways for rejuvenation. They will also explore additional funding streams to support a targeted laneway enhancement programme, ensuring these unique spaces contribute to a more vibrant, accessible, and attractive town centre.

Head Chef
Gleneagle Killarney

PROFILE: Trevor O’Keeffe, Head Chef at Gleneagle Killarney, is celebrated for his passion for local Kerry produce and creative Irish cuisine. In 2025, he was honoured with the Munster Head Chef of the Year award at the Irish Hotel Federation Awards, recognising his leadership, innovation, and commitment to exceptional dining experiences in Killarney.
What is your favourite dish to prepare for Christmas dinner, and why does it hold special meaning for you?
My favourite dish to prepare has to be roast turkey with all the trimmings. There’s something timeless about the smell of a bird roasting away, surrounded by stuffing and buttery vegetables. It brings me straight back to my childhood, that sense of excitement and family coming together around the table.
What local supplies and ingredients do you use in your holiday menu?
We’re spoiled for choice here in Kerry. I source our vegetables from O'Shea’s fruit & vegetables . Our meats come from a long-standing partnership with a local butcher Tim Jones & Tim Hickey, and our seafood comes from local supplier Paudie Spillane & Michael Daly from Caherciveen. Supporting local is part of our DNA at The Gleneagle.
What’s the most popular Christmas dish at your restaurant in Killarney?
Without question, it’s the traditional roast turkey and honey-glazed ham duo. Guests love the comfort of it, especially when paired with our cranberry and port jus. It’s a dish that never fails to bring smiles and second helpings!
Do you have a signature dessert for the festive season? If so, what makes it unique?
Yes, our signature dessert is a spiced Christmas sponge pudding. It’s a twist on the classic, lighter, but full of familiar flavours. We make it with homemade brandy crème anglaise, It’s indulgent but not heavy, perfect after a big meal. How do you create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in your restaurant for Christmas diners?
For me, it starts with genuine hospitality. The décor, the lights, the music, all of that sets the mood, but it’s the warmth of our team that makes guests feel at home. We keep the atmosphere relaxed, with the scent of mulled wine in the air and traditional carols playing softly in the background.
What is the one ingredient you can't live without during the holiday season? Butter, and lots of it! From roasting vegetables to basting meats and finishing sauces, good Irish butter brings everything together. It’s the heart of Christmas cooking.
What's the one Christmas dish you secretly wish would disappear forever from the holiday menu?
Brussels sprouts boiled to death! They’ve given a bad name to a perfectly good vegetable. Cooked right, roasted with a bit of bacon and chestnut, they can be delicious, but soggy sprouts are a crime against Christmas.
What’s your go-to drink pairing for a classic Irish Christmas dinner?
A rich, full-bodied red wine like a Rioja or Bordeaux pairs beautifully with turkey and ham. For something more local, I love serving a pint of Blue Rose Irish Pale Ale with the meal, it complements the flavours nicely without overpowering them.
If Christmas dinner had to be prepared in 10 minutes or less, what's your go-to "emergency festive feast"?
I’d whip up a turkey and cranberry toastie using leftover roast meat, a bit of stuffing, and a good sourdough bread, toasted in plenty of butter, of course. Pair it with a mug of hot soup or mulled wine and you’ve got Christmas comfort in minutes. What advice would you give home cooks in Killarney to make their Christmas dinner extra special this year?
Keep it simple and focus on quality ingredients. Don’t overcomplicate things, great produce speaks for itself. Prep as much as you can the day before, and most importantly, enjoy the process.

There’s something special about Christmas in Killarney. The lights, the laughter, the food that brings everyone together. At Gleneagle’s Fiadh Restaurant, it all comes to life around the table.
Here, the focus is simple: great ingredients, local flavour and food made with care. Head Chef Trevor O’Keeffe, recently named Munster Chef of the Year at the Irish Hotel Awards, leads a team that cooks with passion. Every plate tells its own story of Kerry, from the freshness of Atlantic seafood to the comfort of slow-cooked meats and winter vegetables.
Fiadh’s festive menu blends the best of tradition with a few unexpected twists. Think warming starters, generous mains and desserts that feel like Christmas should. Fiadh feels especially inviting at this time of year. The lights are low, the greenery glows and there’s an easy warmth that makes everyone feel at home.
Every Sunday from December 7 right up to December 21, families can experience the magic of the Fiadh Santa Experience. Meet Santa himself in his cosy grotto before enjoying a two or three-course festive lunch. There’s a gift for every child and a sense of wonder that fills the room. Two courses are thirty euro per adult, three courses thirty-five euro, and the kids' buffet lunch is eighteen euro, including San-

ta’s visit and gift.
Gather the people you love and make this Christmas one to remember at Fiadh, Gleneagle.

As Christmas approaches, the aroma of delectable dishes wafts through homes across the globe, each region boasting unique culinary traditions that have been passed down for generations. Christmas traditions around the world are a celebration of

culture, heritage, and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones. As the festive season approaches, why not challenge yourself to cook something inspired by a different culture.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian American tradition celebrated on Christmas Eve. In the early 1900’s, Italian American’s emigrated in large numbers and moved to the United States. The feast was created as a way to honour their culture while living in America. Gathering the family on one of the most im portant days of the year provided com fort and connection to emigrants living far away from home. While seafood is a staple dish in Southern Italy, the ‘seven fishes’ became an Americanized interpretation of the tradition. It is believed the number seven represents the seven holy sacraments. It often involves multiple seafood dishes enjoyed throughout the night. There is no fixed order or set menu, and sometimes families don’t keep track of the exact number of fish.

In sunny Australia and New Zea land, they celebrate Christmas at the height of summertime, which means the sun is shining and there is no chance of any snow. Barbecues are a common Christmas dinner for the Aussies and Kiwis. Cold Christmas ham is also a favourite down under, with Pavlova as a perfect dessert com panion. A few cold beers are sure to be on offer too. Aussies and Kiwi’s are quite similar culturally to Ireland and the UK so often our traditions are quite similar. With the mass Irish emigration in recent years, a Christmas down under is definitely a big change for those who have recently moved down under.

Mexico begin their Christmas celebrations 8 days before everybody else. While we wait until Christmas Eve, Mexicans kick off their festivities on December 16 with the start of Las Posadas. This commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Buena Noche, or Christmas Eve, is the final day of Las Posadas, and is quite often a bigger event than Christmas Day for many Mexican families. A traditional family dinner is enjoyed late on Christmas Eve, and the leftovers are used for Christmas Day. Tamales are a signature Mexican dish and are hugely popular during the holiday season. Champurrado and Ponche are two popular drinks during the winter season. Champurrado is the chocolate version of atole, which is a hot, thick drink made from corn dough and milk, dating back to Aztec times.

Forget a turkey on Christmas Day, it’s all about the chicken in Japan. Believe it or not, the staple Christmas dish there is fried chicken – and not just any fried chicken, but specifically KFC. This unique tradition began in the 1970s after a hugely successful marketing campaign promoted Kentucky Fried Chicken as the perfect Christmas meal. Today, 3.5 million families enjoy a KFC meal during the holiday season in Japan. Christmas isn’t a national holiday in Japan, therefore it isn’t widely celebrated however the tradition of festive fried chicken has quickly become a beloved part of the season. In fact, Christmas Eve is KFC’s busiest day of the year in Japan.

Catherine Connolly was officially inaugurated as Ireland’s tenth president during a ceremony in St Patrick’s Hall on Tuesday.
The event was attended by former presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese along with outgoing president Michael D. Higgins. Former Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Leo Varadkar were also present, as were Taoiseach Michael Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris. Chief Justice Donal
O'Donnell read out the declaration which was repeated by the president-elect. Ms Connolly was officially declared President of Ireland after signing the declaration. Michael D. Higgins departed Áras an Uachtaráin on Monday evening alongside his wife Sabina. Mr Higgins described his presidency as a “great privilege” and thanked the people of Ireland for their warmth and support over the past 14 years. Reflecting on his time in office, he said: “How valuable it was to be able
to join with the Irish people in engaging with the issues, projects and ideas that will help us to achieve the best of our country and the best representation of Ireland and its values abroad – an inclusive citizenship and a creative society in a real Republic.” The couple were cheered on their departure by members of the Sanctuary Runners group, of which Mr Higgins is patron. Ms Connolly’s first official engagement was a lunch at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Four Kerry survivors of industrial and reform schools have officially ended their hunger strike this week. It lasted for 51 days.
Miriam Moriarty Owens, Mary Donovan and Maurice Patton O’Connell were child inmates of Pembroke Alms Industrial School in Tralee. Mary Dunlevy Greene was at an industrial school in Limerick. It came to an end after an agreement was made with Taoiseach Michael Martin and Minister for Education Helen McEntee. The hunger strikers were campaigning for a full State contributory pension
and access to HAA medical cards. Minister Michael Healy-Rae welcomed the end of the hunger strikes, saying he had been in contact with them over the last several weeks. He described their strength and resilience as “remarkable” and said they “stood up for what they believed in, and they did so peacefully and with great dignity.” Meanwhile Fianna Fail TD Michael Cahill said that he hopes none of those involved will suffer any lasting effects from the ordeal and hopes they are treated with dignity and compassion.

A lion spotted roaming around East Clare?
There was a buzz on social media last week after it emerged that a lion was spotted roaming around East Clare – or so it seemed.
Somebody filmed an animal in the woods, and it looked very like a lion. Lots of rumours swirled around including reported sightings and suggestions that the video was AI-generated. However, An Garda Siochana confirmed there is no lion in East Clare. In a post on Facebook, Gardaí from Killaloe revealed that the video was in fact of a very friendly Newfoundland dog called Mouse, who they said was delighted with his recent viral video clip.

Ireland won a record-breaking 68 metals at the World Steak Challenge in London, including the award for World’s Best Steak.
With 24 gold medals, Ireland was the top performing country overall and won the grand prize for its grass-fed steak. Dawn Meats and Lidl won the coveted award of the World’s Best Steak for a grass-fed Angus sirloin. The steak is sold by Lidl in Ireland and comes from cattle bred in Co. Waterford. The judges described the tex-
ture as similar to a tenderloin, but it also carries a wonderful taste like a ribeye. The World Steak Challenge is now in its eleventh year and is regarded as the ultimate benchmark for steak producers worldwide. This year’s judging panel, comprising over 60 international experts, assessed entries on both raw and cooked criteria. 304 medals were awarded in total with Ireland taking home the greatest medal haul of 68 gold, silver or bronze medals.
Rental costs increased by 4.4% in the last year
The average cost of a three-bedroom house in Kerry is €1522, up 4.4% on a year ago. That’s according to the latest Rental Report by Daft.ie.
Market rents are now one third higher than their pre-Covid levels and two thirds higher than their Celtic Tiger peak in late 2007. In Cork city, rents are up 9.3% year-on-year, while in Galway and Limerick cities, rents are up by 6%, and in Waterford city, rents are up 11.4%. There were just over 1,900 homes available to rent nationwide, down 21%. The report shows that rental inflation remains lower in Dublin than the national average, with prices rising by 2.7% in the capital compared to 4.3% nationally. Ronan Lyons, Professor in Economics at Trinity College Dublin, described the market as being starved of supply. He said: “The sharp fall in availability of homes to rent suggests that any further

pressure on rents over the coming quarters will be upwards. While it will take years, significant amounts of new rental supply, all around the country, are required to change conditions in the rental market.” To celebrate 20 years of Daft.ie releasing market analysis, the report has been revamped and extended, giving even more insight to those interested in the housing market.
Kerry historian Owen O’Shea has released a new book detailing Civil War politics in the county and charting the turbulent and sometimes violent elections of the 1920s and early 1930s.
From Bullets to Ballots: Politics and Electioneering in Post-Civil War Kerry, 192333 has been published this week by UCD Press and will be launched at events in Tralee during the coming weeks. Owen’s book is based on four years of research for a PhD at the School of History at University College Dublin. Owen describes the Civil war in Kerry as the most divisive, and longer lasting than any other county in Ireland. He said: “Politics and election campaigns in the county were hugely influenced by the bitterness and hatred which the war created. Elections brought underlying tensions to the surface and were often occasions of violence fuelled by fiery rhetoric from election platforms.” In the book, the results of elections for the Civil War parties, as well as other parties who were not defined by the Treaty split, are considered in detail. Key influences on electoral be-

haviour are examined, including party organisation, the role of party members, the dynamics of election campaigns, how the memory of the Civil War was used to persuade voters, and the crucial role of newspapers and their coverage of elections. The book was launched by Professor Ferriter in Dublin bookshop Books Upstairs, on Tuesday. There will be a Kerry launch on November 28 at O’Mahony’s Bookshop in Tralee with Minister Norma Foley as guest speaker.
The Maldives has announced plans to ban young people born on or after January 1, 2007, from smoking tobacco. They are the first country in the world to implement a generational ban.
The Ministry of Health confirmed on Saturday that it will be illegal for young people to use, buy or sell tobacco products within the country. It comes after their strict clampdown on vaping products. The country made it illegal
for anyone to import, sell, possess, use or distribute e-cigarettes regardless of age. Holidaymakers are expected to abide by the new law. Ahmed Afaal is the vice chair of the archipelago's tobacco control board, and he spoke to the BBC about the vaping ban that was implemented last year. He said it was a “good step towards a generation of tobacco-free citizens.” He believes it will not have a negative effect on tourism as people come to the country for the beaches and the sun, not to smoke.

The launch of this year’s Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally will take place on Sunday at two ODR Collection Hotels in Killarney.
A photo shoot of competing rally car will take place outside the Killarney Towers Hotel at 3pm on Sunday. Afterward the welcome addresses and speeches will be held at the Killarney Plaza Hotel. The full entry list will be revealed at the launch. Kris Meeke and his Muckross-based co-driver Noel O’Sullivan have already been confirmed in a BMW M3, and more big names from Irish and international rallying are expected to join the line-up.
This year’s rally will be run in memory of
the late Mike Gaine, a long-time Killarney and District Motor Club member and one of Kenmare’s best-known rally supporters.
The final corner of the famous Moll’s Gap stage passes the Gaine family farm, and both runs over the reverse stage on Saturday evening will begin close to the entrance to his yard.
Most of this year’s competitive mileage will take place in the Kenmare area as organisers dedicate the 2025 event to his memory. Mike was tragically killed in March, and his death remains part of an ongoing Garda investigation.
“Mike was the backbone of Kenmare rallying. His admiration and knowledge of the sport were second to none", said Kenmare-based driver Shane McCarthy.

The latest House Rebuilding Guide published by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) shows that national average rebuild costs, which include demolition and site clearance, have increased by an average of 7% over the past 12 months.
This is up from the 6% rate of increase recorded last year but well down on the 12% increase recorded in 2023.
Labour costs and skills shortages are continuing to drive rebuild costs while two new levies, the Landfill levy from September 2024 and the Recovery levy from January 2025 are impacting costs. From an insurance perspective your property should be insured for the reinstatement cost and not the market value. In other words, the cost of rebuilding the house excluding the site value. Bear in
mind that the rebuild cost could be higher than the market value.
The base rebuilding costs in the Munster region are running at an average of €3,100 per square metre for a four-bed detached house of 119 square metres in the most recently published guide. The rebuilding rates quoted by SCSI are for estate type homes and not one-off homes. These are the base rebuild costs only and higher spec fixtures, fittings, built in wardrobes, fences, walls, gates and garages need to be factored in addi-
tion.
Garage costs range from €24,482 for a single attached garage to €43,793 for a double attached garage, on average. It is very important to note that “under insurance” can have a serious effect on any future claims’ settlements. Most policies include an “Average Clause” which means in the event of “under insurance” any claims settlement can be reduced in value in proportion to the degree of under insurance. Where the Sum Insured is only 75% of the total reinstatement cost, you will receive 75% of the agreed cost of reinstatement, whether the claim is made for partial reinstatement or total loss. I would recommend that you undertake a review of your reinstatement sum in-

sured. Many insurers are index linking sums insured at renewal date. In order to get a definitive individual reinstatement value on your house you should contact an independent qualified surveyor. The rebuilding cost report and a rebuilding calculator can be found at www.scsi.ie
Killarney-based human resources consultancy firm HR Buddy has announced a significant expansion with the rollout of a new AI software solution.
The company, which maintains offices in Killarney, Cork, Limerick, and Dublin, aims to help HR managers streamline daily administrative issues, freeing up their time to concentrate on more valuable people management tasks.
The new software, named HR Buddy Manager, is expected to be rolled out to over 2,000 companies in Ireland by the end of 2026.
Designed by HR experts working alongside IT specialists, the platform was created with the goal of making business HR processes as seamless as possible. HR Buddy Manager uses an AI reader to significantly reduce documentation and endless hours of administration. Its functions cover several key tasks, including the generation of employee contracts, annual leave management,
payroll and overtime data, rostering, clock in/clock out functions with secure Geolocation tracking, document storage, and the generation of mandatory gender pay gap reports.
The system also supports workplace training in areas such as anti-bullying, inclusivity, and dignity.
Commenting on the launch, Founder and MD of HR Buddy, Damien McCarthy, explained that the system arose directly from client needs. "Our most popular services include HR documentation, employment contracts, training programmes, managed HR services and outsourced payroll services. Through delivering these solutions to clients over the past number of years, we identified an opportunity to create a bespoke software system that carries out multiple functions for HR professionals.”
More details on the new software can be found at www.hrbuddy.ie, or a free demo can be requested by emailing info@hrbuddy.ie.

On March 1 next year, a series of significant changes in legislation are proposed to come into force in Ireland surrounding the rental market.
The legislation will effect sweeping changes to the rental sector beginning with classing anyone who owns more
than three properties as a large landlord. Large landlords won’t be able to enact ‘no-fault’ evictions. They will be tied to rolling six-year leases, but in the event the tenant leaves, it seems that they can adjust the rent to market value.
The legislation will govern new tenancies from March 2026 onwards. Under the new proposals all new leases

Nestled in the heart of the quiet, mature residential area of Ballycasheen, this superblylocated detached property delivers unlimited potential. The charm and allure of this unique find is bolstered by its strategic location, a comfortable walking distance of St Olivers National School and all the vibrant amenities of Killarney town. Set on an expansive, mature, landscaped site of c.0.18 acres, the property benefits from the added convenience of dual frontage to both Woodlawn Rd & Hawthorn Ave, offering the potential for future development.
will move to a 6 year security of tenure. With such security of tenure, landlords retain the ability to sell their property but only with the sitting tenants in place – it remains to be seen what effect this may have on property values going forward.
The new legislation will allow for rents to come up to market rent at the commencement of each new term. While the legislation is still to be signed into law, it has certainly sent shockwaves through the market with an increase in landlords exiting the market and placing their properties for sale, particularly in the large urban centres.

The talented young students from Killarney Community College brought magic to the stage last week with their production of Aladdin
More than 40 students took part in the school’s pantomime, which entertained audiences over three evening shows and two matinee performances. There was a lot of laughter during the shows with sharp one liners and witty local references. Clodagh O’Sullivan starred as Aladdin alongside Aoibhe Bartlett as Jasmine. The show was directed by the school’s music teacher Ms Hughes

and maths teacher Mr Lynch. The staff and students dedicated much of their time to the production, giving up weekends, Wednesday afternoons and their midterm break to rehearse. Costumes, sets, and props were created in-house, with extra help and donations from The Marian Panto Rathmore, Oliver Hurley Siamsa Tíre, and Holy Family School, Rathmore. Principal Stella Loughnane praised the show as “a wonderful celebration of teamwork, creativity, and community spirit. The Social Action Group Rathmore CLG was honoured at the All-Ireland Pride of Place community awards on Friday evening in Limerick.
The scheme won the Age Friendly Communities category, with Westmeath Community Development coming runner-up, along with the AgeWell group in Meath.
Cllr Martin Grady congratulated the Rathmore Social Action Group.
“As Mayor of Killarney Municipal District I want to pay a massive tribute to all participants and a massive congratulations to Rathmore,” he said “ This shows the hard work and dedication over the past 12 months and no doubt it will give them the motivation to continue on with con-
sistent hard work and determination. They provide a great service and are a credit to themselves and the community they serve.
Judges praised the longevity of service.
“The Social Action Group are based in Rathmore and celebrate 50 years this year, testimony to a lot of hard work and persistence. What started a youth project wanting to make a different has developed into a significant service provider mainly for older people including the provision of social housing.
“The Social Action Group’s community
centre Teach Íosagáin accommodates the needs of the wider community, particularly young people. It serves as a home for youth activities, including dance and disco, and is the canteen for the local secondary school. It provides a community gym, with reasonable membership fees, along with meeting rooms for wider community use. It really is the beating heart of the community,” said an official statement.
The awards, hosted by comedian and broadcaster Dermot Whelan, took place in Limerick’s Strand Hotel, with 400
community volunteers in attendance. Sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place competition was initiated 23 years ago though a Co-operation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development. Two other Kerry projects were nominated for awards namely; Cúnamh Iveragh CLG and Cromane Community Council CLG.
It has grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements on the island of Ireland.

Killarney native Padraig O’Sullivan (or Hank as he was more commonly known when growing up here) has recently developed a timely and important podcast series for the maturing man.
Don't Let The Old Man In is a weekly podcast for men who are navigating the transitions of midlife – from career shifts and health priorities to evolving relationships and discovering what comes next.
The series, which is hosted and directed by Padraig, addresses the universal question many men face in their forties and beyond: "Now what?"
Padraig, who is currently undertaking a doctorate at Oxford University on the same topic, explained the concept behind the series saying:
“For many of us approaching midlife and beyond, huge questions surface: ‘Now what? If I don't want to continue my current job, what do I do? Where do I get joy from, going forward?’
These are normal but profound questions. For some, the idea of embracing reinvention in the second half of life is scary and foreign. Yet the invitation is firmly extended to us”.
Each episode hears Padraig having real and candid conversations with experts, celebrities and ordinary men about navigating midlife. The ups, the downs, the surprises, the opportunities, the secrets and how to do it on your terms, gracefully or even disgracefully!
“Through stories, tools, and honest conversations, our hope is that these podcasts will move beyond midlife crisis clichés to offer practical tools and real perspectives, thereby helping you unlock what really matters!” said Padraig. Originally from Loreto Road and a for-
mer student of St Brendan’s College, Padraig emigrated to Australia in the 90’s where he established a number of successful executive coaching businesses working with global clients such as Johnston & Johnston, Coca Cola, Nestle, BHP, SHELL, and Eli Lilly amongst many others, gaining him a reputation as 'one of Asia's top leadership experts' (INSIGHT Publishing).
He has been fascinated with transitions and personal reinventions for most of his life. His career has seen him in the medical industry, in sales and marketing, consulting industries, self-employed, an entrepreneur who successfully sold businesses, an educator at Sydney Business School, an author, an Executive Coach to 100’s of CEO’s all over Asia, a podcaster, the owner of a ‘failed’ tech start up and now the co-founder of The Wisdom Vault (an Australian educational platform for men in midlife) and host of this podcast.
Padraig, who currently lives in Sydney with his wife Carole and family, firmly believes that mid-life, while tough on many levels, lonely on others, and downright confusing on still more, can also include the best stages in life.
Don't Let The Old Man In is hosted by The Wisdom Vault, and is available to download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.
Listeners can subscribe to updates on upcoming episodes and live events. See https://thewisdomvault.org/

Killarney Pickleball Club marked its one-year anniversary last Sunday by hosting a mini-tournament for its members.
The anniversary event was a great success, with the winning team proving dominant on the day. The champions of the mini-tournament were: Michele Turella, Kumar Shreyansh, Stephanie Regosa, and Joe Lynch.
On the competitive national stage, the club also celebrated success recently.
Member Michael Lyne secured a bronze medal at the Irish Nationals, held in Lisburn. Lyne took bronze in the Over 60 Mixed Doubles event, which served as a strong finish after narrowly losing the Men's Doubles bronze match the previous day.
In addition to the tournament, the anniversary event was used to officially launch the club’s new playing tops. The club thanked all members for their support over the past year and looks forward to further growth in the sport.

Kerry footballers Shane Ryan, Jason Foley, Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Gavin White, Joe O’Connor, Paudie Clifford, Seánie O’Shea and David Clifford picked up AllStar awards at the RDS in Dublin last Friday night with the younger Clifford also winning the Footballer of the Year prize for the third time in just four seasons.
Clifford has now claimed more PwC GAA/ GPA Footballer of the Year awards than any other player, though the great Jack O’Shea did win the old Texaco-sponsored version four times in the 1980s.
The St Brendan’s College teacher also collected his sixth All-Star on the night as
he joined an illustrious group of footballers with six or more such titles to their name. The other nine players to have reached this milestone are Peter Canavan, Brian Fenton, Ciarán Kilkenny, Jack O'Shea and Ger Power, who all won six in total; Stephen Cluxton and Mikey Sheehy, who finished up with seven; Colm Cooper (eight); and Pat Spillane (nine).
26-year-old Clifford is the second youngest player to win six All-Stars, behind Spillane who captured his sixth when he was 25 going on 26.
After 13 seasons (combined) as starters for Kerry, the Cliffords of Fossa now have

10 All-Star awards to their name. Paudie has won four in five seasons. David has won six in eight.
Paudie Clifford and Seánie O’Shea both won their fourth award, bringing them level with Bomber Liston and Darragh Ó Sé on Kerry’s all-time all-star list.
Meanwhile, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Joe O’Connor were both selected on the All-Star team for the first time in their careers.
Eight All-Stars is a record-breaking haul as far as Kerry are concerned. Their previous best was seven which they achieved in 1980, 1984, 2009 and 2022. It is only
the fourth time in the 54-year history of the football All-Stars that a team has received eight. Meanwhile, seven Kerry players will be in contention for LGFA All-Stars at a gala banquet at The Bonnington Dublin Hotel tomorrow night (Saturday). Mary Ellen Bolger, Eilís Lynch, Aishling O’Connell, Aoife Dillane, Anna Galvin, Danielle O’Leary and Síofra O’Shea have all been nominated.
The Camogie All-Stars also take place tomorrow evening. Kerry’s Patrice Diggin is on the three-player shortlist for Intermediate Player of the Year.
The Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat the Tipp Talons on Saturday and advance to the quarter-finals of the Men’s Division 1 National Cup.
The Lakers must have been considered favourites for this Round 1 tie having recently beaten the same opposition in the league, but the hosts powered ahead in Killenaule, at one point leading by 54 to 38.
Luke O’Hea’s side showed grit and determination to hang in there, however, with Mark Sheehan and Pablo Murcia very much to the fore.
They can now look forward to the next phase of the competition: an away match against Templeogoe of Dublin. The game is scheduled for December 6. “We got four points at the end of the second quarter and it gave us a more relaxed feel in the dressing room at halftime,” Lakers captain Eoin Carroll told club PRO Enda Walshe. “In the second half we needed to emphasise our rebounding and eliminating their second chance scoring. Our defensive intensity needed to be ramped up in the third as well and Pablo’s two steals really quietened their crowd.
“We’re now only one win away from a cup weekend and I'm really proud of the fight we showed to come out of here with the win.”
The Lakers’ scorers on the night were Steve Kelly (21), Eoin Carroll (20), Sam Grant (15), Mark Sheehan (14), Pablo Murcia (13) and Rui Saraiva (3).
Elsewhere, St Paul’s were unfortunate to exit at the first stage of the Paudie O’Connor Women’s National Cup after just coming out the wrong side of a great battle with Brunell in Killarney.

With some outstanding performances on both sides, the teams went in tied at 36 at half-time and it was still all to play for heading into the fourth as Brunell led by four.
Baskets by Tara Cousins and Denise Dunlea helped put the Cork outfit under severe pressure down the stretch but the Killarney girls just couldn’t get that all important shot to drop in the final
seconds. They eventually fell to a tough four-point defeat (74-78), but they will take encouragement from their performance against one of the holders and one of the country’s top teams.
Tara Cousins top scored for St Paul’s with 34 points while Maisie Burnham (14), Denise Dunlea (12), Lorraine Scanlon (8), Síofra O’Shea (3) and Lovisa Hevinder (3) also got their names on
the scoresheet. Scanlon has been rewarded for her continued excellence with another callup to the Ireland squad for the beginning of their FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifying campaign. James Weldon’s side played Luxembourg on Wednesday and tomorrow (Saturday) they face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Dublin.
Gleneagle Squash Club’s October Finals took place recently, kindly sponsored by O’Keeffe’s Rathmore who have supported the monthly club competition for over 35 years.
Team captains Paul O’Brien and Tim O’Leary set out for an evening of great challenges. In Division 5, Mary O’Callaghan stepped up against David Kearney. Mary got off to a flyer and went ahead in the first but David keeping his cool took the first game. Mary was not having it and took the second game to level the match. David then found some rhythm and won the match out 3-1. Noreen Tobin was next up to the ‘T’ against Robbie O’Sullivan. Two great players with years of experience, and Rob was caught out in the first with Noreen’s elegant technique. Rob upped his game and won out 3-1. Team Tim were now on the road to victory with two wins already.
Next for Team Paul was Ray O’Callaghan

against Stephen Moore. The pressure was on as Team Paul desperately needed a win. The first game was a tight affair but Ray came good and won the match three games to nil.
Then Eddie ‘Edo’ Sabic played Barry O’Sullivan. Another tight affair. Barry’s powerful squash was testing Edo from the start, but Edo settled and Barry could not hold him back from winning
three games to nil on the night.
The final match between the captains was once again the decider. Paul and Tim stand together in the Munster Leagues for the club, but on this occasion they stood apart. They put on a great spectacle of what our members strive to achieve. Paul started the strongest and won the first game with a good lead from the start. Tim battled hard in the second and was a much closer affair, but Paul still nicked it. The third game was tit for tat again, but Paul’s skill and determination took the night for his team.
Another fantastic evening of squash and as always. The club expressed their gratitude to the Gleneagle Leisure staff, O’Keefe’s of Rathmore, and Club Committee who make these nights happen. Entry for the Christmas Competition is now open and all details can be found in the Squash Club within Gleneagle Leisure.
I have had an observation for quite some time now: that of the three GAA clubs in Killarney parish – Dr Crokes, Legion and Spa – just two of them will be able to have sufficient juvenile players to field a boys team for Under 14 within the next decade. That will have a knock-on effect. The process of integrating the LGFA and Camogie Association into one corporate body of the GAA will bring its own challenges, but that discussion will be aired in
future editions. Will the three local clubs have an Under 14 girls’ team is a separate but connected question. This week’s article deals specifically with male players. The above scenario based on anecdotal evidence needed much firmer evidence to arrive at my prediction. I researched the 2022 Census, the most reliable source of Killarney’s population; the Department of Education & Youths’ official school enrolment statistics, current and
past; Rural Development Report (2011); Killarney Town Development (2015); and Kerry GAA Demographic Report (2024). It does not follow from one Killarney parish losing out on an Under 14 team in the future that the three clubs will not be able to field teams in other age cohorts, including senior. The latter will not happen. I am also of the opinion that within six years, Dingle, the current Kerry SFC champions, will drop to intermediate

level. Their well-deserved recent win versus Austin Stacks has slowed but not prevented their likely inability to remain at senior level. I expect they will beat the Limerick champions in Austin Stack Park, Tralee on the weekend of November 21/22 and proceed to the expected Barrs v Dingle Munster Club final in December. My hope is that Dingle will be crowned Munster champions, a title denied to them when they lost out in a previous

Munster final.
I visited Dingle town, Daingean Uí Chúis, recently, and witnessed their sheer delight at winning the Bishop Moynihan Cup. And also my delight. But a prominent, wise, native Gaeilgeoir summed it up in one word, ‘faoiseamh’ (relief). I believe when the great Paul Geaney and others now in their early/mid 30s retire, the drop from senior will happen. They can’t go on forever.
Dingle and Killarney have one crucial factor in common. The inflated cost of housing in both towns continues to prevent young people purchasing a home, and that includes couples who have what are regarded as good steady jobs with decent salaries. Killarney is the most expensive town in Kerry for purchasing a home. That is a very important fact in my contention in predicting only two GAA clubs for Under 14 levels in Killarney. Yet Census 2022 shows that the population of Killarney Municipal District (containing the smaller population of Killarney Parish) continues to grow. In the 2022 Census it stood at 31,086, and in 2025 that figure has certainly increased due to demographic surges arising with the growing number of immigrants, a national trend, which has very significant implications for the Killarney local authority in

Dingle and Killarney have one crucial factor in common: the inflated cost of housing.
facilitating housing, services, and other requirements for the local authority.
The population of Killarney town was 14,412 in the 2022 Census and is likely to have increased by 2025, but with the huge National Park not available for housing, the surrounding parishes such as Firies, Milltown, Kilcummin and Glenflesk have expanded very significantly.
A major factor in relation to new housing in the rural parts of Killarney parish and beyond is that under the Kerry County Development 2022-2028, these areas are categorised as rural areas under urban influence and thus have the strictest restrictions for one-off houses. Even though it is still expensive to purchase a housing site in these areas the price is much lower than that in the Killarney.
The population of Ireland is growing at the rate of 8% annually but in Kerry the growth is close to 6%.
Significantly, the cohort of the popula-
tion under the age of 10 has actually decreased in the last two censuses. There is an ageing population nationwide, but Kerry ranks in second place for counties with the highest age cohort. While the overall population is projected to continue to increase, the younger cohorts are projected to decrease in Kerry.
The breakdown by age cohort of the Killarney MD Population of 31,086 is very revealing. There are 2,066 aged 0–5; 2,464 aged 6-11; 1,372 aged 12-14; 1,229 aged 15-17; 5,825 aged 18-34 year olds); and 18,130 aged 35+.
It is difficult to get accurate figures for the preferred choice of sport for the New Irish immigrants, but all the anecdotal evidence I have garnered suggests that soccer is the number one choice by the vast majority. The GAA comes in at number four at best after basketball and athletics. It is clear why the two soccer clubs in Killarney parish, Killarney Athletic and Killar-
ney Celtic, have so many New Irish playing the internationally promoted game of soccer which becomes very attractive. Combine that with the Parish Rule so prominent and indeed contentious for the local GAA fraternity shows and the number of juvenile players available to the three local GAA clubs is shrinking. The preference of soccer has created its own challenges for the two Killarney soccer clubs to provide sufficient playing facilities for the ever growing demands of increasing playing numbers, especially at the younger age groups. It is not reflected in a big way at senior level right now, but it is a factor at juvenile levels. Notice how many locals of all ages follow the fortunes of cross channel and European multi- rich soccer clubs. It is highly promoted in multimedia. Kerry FC has made great strides in its short life so far. Among the many GAA games I have attended in recent months were two splendid, close and thrilling games, Legion v Dr Crokes at minor level. Legion won the Kerry quarter-final by one point and the more recent East Kerry final by a goal. Legion were the better team on both occasions and deserved to win. Still just one score separated the sides. How many players will they have available in the next decade?
KILCUMMIN LEAD THE WAY
In 2025 Kilcummin lead the way in the number of registered male players in the 9-18 age cohort, covered by the East Kerry Board.
Kilcummin 149, Dr Crokes 145, Legion 132, Rathmore 131, Kenmare Shamrocks 123, Fossa 122, Firies 120, Spa 112, Glenflesk 96, Listry 90, Currow 84, Scartaglin 64, Cordal 51, Gneeveguilla 49. From that Foireann source, not relevant to this discussion, but very informative, shows that Laune Rangers have the highest number of registered numbers of make players in the 9-18 age bracket. The list reads: Laune Rangers 194, Na Gaeil 190, Austin Stacks 179, Listowel Emmets 161, Kilcummin 149, Ardfert 145, Milltown/Castlemaine 145 and so on to a North Kerry club with 0 (zero) registered players in the 9-18 age group.
To be continued next week, including very significant statistics available from Foireann, where all GAA players are registered. Cross checking with the official Department of Education & Youth enrolments 2025 at primary and post primary levels of the schools situated in Killarney is even more revealing.
The demographic changes in Ireland are presenting new challenges and opportunities for the government, statutory bodies and sport. We have been researching the implications for all sports in Killarney to form the basis of some future articles. If any local sports club wishes to have its say, please email sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie with ‘CLUB SURVEY’ in the subject line. Thank you.
As the 2025 League of Ireland season draws to a close, our TY student Luke Mangan speaks to Kerry FC star Joe Adams
Hi Joe. Thanks for speaking to the Killarney Advertiser.
No worries. Thanks for having me.
During the FAI Cup semi-final against Shamrock Rovers, you scored a penalty and the Kerry supporters celebrated as if it was a winner. How did that feel for you as a player to see that?
The fans that travelled all that way on a Sunday evening deserved something to cheer about and to give them that was great.
You have played previously for Dundalk FC. Was that a different experience to playing in Kerry?
It was slightly different. With Dundalk we would be expected to win every game and compete for Europe.
You have also played in England for Brentford B. Is football different in England compared to here in Ireland?
The system over in England with 23s and academies is great and helps promote young talent, but I always believe the first chance you get to play first
team football you have to take it as that's the only way to learn.
How does it feel to have represented your home country of Wales at an international level?
It’s an honour for me and my family, for me to represent my country. It’s the biggest achievement in my career so far and probably always will be. I first played for Wales when I was young.
Maybe 16. I remember being really nervous and in awe of everyone around me. But singing the anthem was special.
You can play with both feet. That’s an incredible skill for any footballer. How do you adapt to such a versatile skill?
I believe being both footed is a bit of luck really. I always played with both feet growing up and it’s stuck, luckily.
Your main positions are on both wings and attacking midfield. Is it hard to move around and be adaptable like that?

Colin was at the heart of it, and I loved playing for him.
Joe ADAMS

I’ve played in every position apart from centre half over the years. Sometimes it can be a blessing as I can help the team in most situations. But sometimes a curse as I may not nail down a position within a season.
When you were young, did you have any idols you looked up to or any specific playing styles you looked to emulate?
My idol growing up was probably Leighton Baines as an Everton fan. Adam Lallana was one I looked at a lot
and obviously Lionel Messi as he’s the greatest to ever do it.
With an incredible coach Colin Healy, his amazing coaching staff, and a great group of players, what do you believe Kerry FC can achieve next season?
It was great to work with such a talented group of people. Obviously, Colin was at the heart of it, and I loved playing for him. Chris [Collopy] and Conor [McCarthy] are brilliant young coaches, and I’ve taken a lot from them this year for sure. I believe they will be right up there next year near the top. I believe they have the foundations to do that and the quality of staff and players to do it for sure.
Thanks for you time, Joe, and all the best.
No problem, Luke.

60: Killarney Athletic AFC are celebrating 60 years and are hosting a party night at the Gleneagle hotel on Friday November 14th. We hope that everyone who attended enjoyed their night KERRY DISTRICT LEAGUE PREMIER A: Killarney Athletic 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Will Courtney x 1. A very tightly contested game saw us secure a point in Woodlawn today, courtesy of a 95th minute equaliser from an excellent Will Courtney free kick.
U14 A BOYS NATIONAL TROPHY: Killarney Athletic A 5-0 Broadford Utd. Sean Quill x 3, Lucas Uchytil x 1, Miron Svyripa x 1. The lads played a very good game today at home versus a big tough team from Limerick. Best team performance of the year by far. They hunted down the bigger stronger team like a pack of dogs flying into every tackle. Not giving their opposition a moment to breath. Each and every boy could have been man of the match today. Man of the match Lucas Uchytil. Special mention to Sean Quill with another wonderful hat trick. Onto the next round. Well done lads! Thank very much to the Broadford players and coaches for a very sporting match.
U14 BOYS DIVISION 1: LB Rovers 1 Killarney Athletic B 1. Goal: Harry Randles. The U14 boys made the trip to Ballyduff on Saturday afternoon in wet conditions. The first half was close with chances few and far between. Athletic went up a gear in the second and scored early on through a well-taken finish from Harry Randles. We were unlucky not to double the lead minutes later when Leon Hebda struck the post with a fine effort. A lapse in concentration 10 minutes to go gifted a penalty to Rovers which they scored. Athletic finished the game on top and were unlucky not to grab a winner in the end. Overall, a good performance and a deserved point.
BOYS U12 DIVISION 1: Killarney Celtic 3-1 Killarney Athletic. Unfortunately it wasn’t our day, we are just a bit off the pace today, some sharp passing by Celtic proved the pivotal difference, we will regroup next week. Well done to lads there tried their hearts out & thanks to all our unwavering supporters. Daniel Moloney x 1.
U15 GIRLS PREMIER DIVISION: Park 0-0 Killarney Athletic. Our Girls made the trip to Tralee early this morning to play the Park and hit the ground running, a very close game ensued with some wonderful football played and though our girls had the better of the chances, they couldn’t break the deadlock! It was a fantastic team effort and a credit to our girls for giving it everything until the final whistle, thanks to the Park for a very competitive sporting game and to Adrian for officiating
U13 GIRLS PREMIER LEAGUE: Killorglin 0-1 Killarney Athletic A. Flora Walsh x 1.
At long last, we get our first league win this season. The girls dug deep today, played well, fought well, and showed some great courage and commitment to get the goal, keep a clean sheet and eventually get the deserved win to get our three points. We started well in the first half and passed the ball well. First chances actually went to Killorglin but with some fine keeping from Jane Brosnan, Athletic kept them out. Caitlin Hickey nearly broke the deadlock, but the effort was well saved by the Killorglin keeper. The very next play, the ball was played in, Flora Walsh never gave up on it, wrangled it off the keeper, dribbled round her and got the shot off from the left-hand side. 1 nil. Some massive pressure came on our defence in the next chapter of the game. But Captain Maebh Coughlan, with Holly O’Connor beside her in defence had great games and kept Killorglin out. In the second half, conditions worsened with wind and rain, and it was hard on both teams. Both sides had their chances. Again with some great work by Jane Brosnan, we kept our clean sheet. Great work done today in the midfield by Clara O’Donoghue and Alannah McGlynn who kept control, consistently helping their backs and feeding their forwards. Delighted for our girls, and we're delighted that they got their win. Plenty of work still to do. Special mention also today also goes to: Lily Duggan. Worked tirelessly up and down the right side. She pushed high in attack but got back when needed, never stopped working. Pure desire. Refused to accept anything less than a win. Constantly taking players on, battling for every ball, and showing the right attitude throughout. Well done to all, Anna, Julie, Rebecca, Erica, Sinead, Aoibheann. Thanks to Killorglin and ref Chris for a great sporting game.
GIRLS U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic 1 Fenit 5. Athletic fell short today against a strong Fenit side. Girls gave 100% and were unluck not to grab a couple of more goals.
LOTTO: Numbers drawn 1,10,21,23. No Jackpot winner. Match 3 winners received €40. Next jackpot €4,400 on Monday November 17th. Tickets available from The Dungeon Bookshop, Amber Shop (Top of Ross Road), club members and online through Clubzap.
KDL PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Padraic Looney. This local derby finished all square after a dramatic finish last Sunday in Woodlawn. With the teams occupying the top 2 spots in the table, this game was always going to be tight and so it proved. The 1st half failed to produce any goals, and it took until the 79th minute before the deadlock was broken. Padraic Looney netted after being set up by Cian Doe. Celtic looked like taking the points, but the drama was not over yet. Deep into injury
Athletic found an equaliser to share the honours.
KDL CHAMPIONSHIP: Killarney Celtic B 2-2 St Brendan's Park. Peter McCarthy, Finbarr Murphy. Celtic B twice hit the front but were pegged back by St Brendan's Park B as they maintained their position at the top of the table. St Brendan's Park started with good play, but it was Celtic who opened the scoring.1-1 at half time Celtic hit the front again but St Brendan's Park bounced back to level and, in the end, both teams shared the points in a fine contest.
U16 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Moneygall 1-5 Killarney Celtic. Kiernan Kelly 4, Lachlann Scannell. Celtic advanced to the next round and an all-Kerry clash with Tralee Dynamos after a convincing win over Moneygall.
U14 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Castleisland 1-3 Killarney Celtic. OG, Luke Clifford, Sean Doyle. Celtic moved into round 4 of the SFAI National Cup after a good win away in Castleisland.
U14 DIV 3: Killarney Celtic D 4-1 Fenit. Oskar Kozub 2, Muhammed Gazal 2. Celtic D had a fine win over Fenit last weekend. A good team performance ensured that Celtic stayed on the front foot through the game.
U12 SFAI NATIONAL CUP: Ballynanty 2-2 Killarney Celtic Ballynanty win on penalties. Conall Favier, Finn Cronin. Celtic A went out of the SFAI National Cup on penalties after a hard-fought encounter against Ballynanty. Celtic led twice but Ballynanty came back to level each time. Both sides gave their all but unfortunately Celtic were on the wrong side of the penalty shootout.
U12 DIV 1: LB Rovers 3-0 Killarney Celtic B. Killarney Celtic C 3-1 Killarney Athletic B. Fionn O'Sullivan 2, Cillian Murphy.
U12 DIV 3: MEK 7-1 Killarney Celtic D. Samir Cenaj.

U16 BOY’S NATIONAL TROPHY ROUND 3: Mastergeeha 8 Holycross 0. A fine win at home for our Mastergeeha U16 team as they progress to the round 4 of the National Trophy. Goal scorers on the day, Daragh Keane (2), Aidan Huggard (2), Dean Moynihan, Alan O’Leary, Cian Kennedy and Dean Riordan all adding to an impressive score line.
U15 GIRLS DIVISION 1: Mastergeeha 5 Dingle 2.
U14 BOYS NATIONAL CUP ROUND 3: Mastergeeha FC 2 Regional United 6. Our U14 boys started brightly with goals from Evan and Karl and a half time lead of 2 goals to 1. Regional started the second half the brighter with quick 2 goals and started to control the game and ran out winners to continue to round 4 of
this competition. While our boys were disappointed, we are also very proud of their performances to date.
U13 GIRLS PREMIER: Listowel Celtic 0 Mastergeeha 4. Another Win on the road for our U13 Premier Girls.
U 13 BOYS DIVISION 1: Mastergeeha 4 Ferry Rangers 3. Played on Sunday 9th November at Kilbrean Park. Scorers on the day for Mastergeeha were Callum O’Connor, Tom Hughes, Paul Mark & Matthew O’Riordan. MOTM David Fleming.
