A husband and wife who built a hugely successful international business from humble beginnings in a shed at the rear of their home have been inducted into the Order of Inisfallen.
The award is considered the highest honour that Killarney can bestow.
Con and Anne Stack saw their company grow from very humble beginnings to a multi-national enterprise that now employs over 600 people.
That remarkable success story was recognised at a ceremony in the historic Muckross House on Thursday afternoon when they received the Order of Inisfallen civic honour which is a joint initiative between Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council. It recognises those who have made an exceptional contribution to the local economy and to the tourism industry. When they moved to Killarney over 50 years ago, Moyvane native Con and his Ballyduff native wife, Anne, set up Killarney Plastics, having identified a market for fibre glass and glass enforced products.
The company later moved operations to an IDA – supported, purpose-built unit and the remarkable dedication shown and groundwork put in by Con and Anne Stack paid handsome dividends as Killarney Plastics became global engineering company Tricel.
It evolved into a major family-led firm, delivering performance and innovation-driven solutions across the water, environmental, construction and distribution industries.
With 14 companies within the group, Tricel currently employs 620 people, 200 of whom are based in Killarney, and the company is now run by Con and Anne’s

sons Michael, Con, Richard and Robert.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mayor of Killarney Cllr Martin Grady said the story of Tricel is inspiring as it went from modest beginnings to international innovation, nurtured by vision, hard work, resilience and innovation.
“Despite this remarkable expansion, the Stack family has never lost sight of their roots. They have remained humble and steadfast supporters of local employ-

ment, local investment and local opportunity.
“Their commitment has ensured that generations of families in Killarney, Kerry and beyond have had the ability to thrive close to home,” the mayor said.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Johnny McGuire said all the comments he has heard since it was first announced that Con and Anne Stack were to be honoured had one common
theme: It couldn’t happen to a nicer couple or a nicer family.
“No words of mine could adequately describe the impact the company has made, both as a manufacturer and as an employer of over 600 people.
“Everything Con and Anne Stack have achieved in business and in life can be attributed to their dignity, their dedication, their commitment, their will to succeed and their incredible work ethic,” he said.

Killarney and District Motor Club celebrated a dual success at the Wednesday’s Motorsport Ireland Awards in Dublin.
Club stalwart Pat Healy received the prestigious FIA Volunteer Pin, and the Killarney Historic Rally won the President's Award for Innovation.
Healy was formally honoured with the FIA Volunteer Pin for his decades of dedication to Irish rallying.
The international award, presented by Motorsport Ireland President Aiden Harper, celebrates individuals who have made essential contributions through volunteering. President Harper's citation highlighted Healy's extensive service: "Starting in Donegal and then moving to Killarney, officiating in numerous positions from Clerk of the Course, Deputy Clerk of the Course, to Chief Marshal, to Stage Commander, to Service Park Man-
agement, spectator safety, this gentleman exemplifies the spirit of volunteering in Irish Motorsport."
Adding to the club's success, the Killarney and District Motor Club secured the President's Award for Innovation.
The award was collected on behalf of the club by Anthony O'Connor, the Clerk of the Course for the Killarney Historic Rally.
The win recognised KDMC's instrumental role in several forward-thinking initiatives. President Harper outlined these as: Creating new refueling zones for events, bringing safety car briefings online, and visiting schools to highlight the difference between "the right and wrong of a road car and rally car."
Construction work on the scoreboard end of Fitzgerald Stadium could begin before the end of the year, Kerry County GAA Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan told delegates at the County Convention in Tralee on Tuesday night.
He confirmed that senior GAA officials in Croke Park are currently reviewing development plans for the Killarney venue, which has long been marked for upgrade. A meeting between Croke Park, Kerry GAA and Fitzgerald Stadium
There is renewed optimism about healthcare services in Kerry following confirmation that the new Killarney Community Hospital is on track to open early next year.
The update was provided after Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill sought clarity from the HSE on bed capacity and timelines for the facility.
The new hospital, located on the Bypass Road, contains 130 single en-suite bedrooms. According to the HSE, the build-
ing will be handed over this month, with occupation expected in the first quarter of 2026. This represents a significant increase on the 101 beds currently available at St Columbanus’ Hospital.
Deputy Cahill said the progress is welcome and long overdue, noting that the expanded bed capacity will benefit communities across the county. He added that he has continued to raise the issue in the Dáil and through the Joint Oireachtas Health Committee.

The organisers of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have paid tribute to one of the event’s best-known volunteers following the passing of John F. Garvey of Tullig, Foilmore.
John, widely recognised by cyclists as “the man with the cap”, was a constant presence at the top of Coomakesta for 35 years.
Every Ring of Kerry day, he supplied riders and volunteers with spring water drawn from his own well, dispensing
thousands of litres over the decades.
PRO Cathal Walsh said John represented the true spirit of community effort. “John was the epitome of what volunteering is all about, he didn't have to be asked,” he said. “For 35 years he stood at Coomakiste hydrating thousands of cyclists.”
John was laid to rest on Wednesday in Keelavarnouge Cemetery. Organisers said his contribution to Ireland’s biggest charity cycle will not be forgotten.
resentatives is expected shortly as part of efforts to move the project forward.
“We will be hoping they give the green light to starting work on the scoreboard end of the stadium in the new year,” Mr O’Sullivan said.
The redevelopment is viewed as a key step in modernising the stadium and improving facilities for players and supporters. Further details on timelines and the scale of the project are expected once Croke Park signs off on the next phase.

A new book by a Killarney priest will be officially launched at St Brendan’s College on Monday, December 9.
Unbeatable – Fr Tom Jones, Handball Supremo will be launched at 6pm in the college chapel.
The book, written by Fr Tom Looney, charts the life of Fr Tom Jones, a past pupil of St Brendan’s who entered the school as both a World and National Handball Champion.
Jones later served as a priest in Ulster, Yorkshire, Australia and Kerry over a 54year ministry. The biography describes his sporting achievements and his contribution to parish life at home and abroad. Fr Kieran O’Brien, President of the Kerry Handball Association, will host the launch.
Copies of the book, priced at €15, are available in the Cathedral Office, O’Connor’s on Beech Road and the Friary Bookshop.

Both students were among 94 award recipients across MIC’s Limerick and Thurles campuses.
Two Killarney students were honoured at the Mary Immaculate College Awards Ceremony in Limerick this week, with Dr Crokes footballer Leah McMahon and MIC Thurles student Setanta O’Callaghan both receiving prestigious college awards. Leah McMahon, who is in her first year studying primary teaching, was presented with an MIC GAA Bursary Award. The bursary acknowledges her performances with Dr Crokes and Kerry Ladies Football, recognising her as one of the standout young players in the college.
Setanta O’Callaghan, received the Saint Bonaventure Trust Prize Year 1, awarded for academic excellence in Theology and Religious Studies on the Bachelor of Arts
Professor Dermot Nestor, President of MIC, said the awards recognise the work and commitment shown by students across all areas of college life.

Kerry TD Pa Daly has welcomed confirmation from the HSE that the new Minor Injuries Unit for Killarney will open early next year.
The facility, which will be located at St Columbanus Home, is expected to ease pressure on University Hospital Kerry by treating non-emergency cases locally.
Deputy Daly said the development is “positive news for patients and families” and will help reduce overcrowding in the Emergency Department.
He added that while the Killarney unit is
an important step, there is now a strong case for a similar service in North Kerry. He highlighted that 60% of A&E attendances at UHK come from West Kerry, North Kerry and Castleisland, and said long travel distances remain an issue for many patients.
Deputy Daly also pointed to ongoing problems with out-of-hours GP cover in the Listowel area and said he will raise the need for an additional unit directly with the HSE and the Minister for Health.

Killarney Musical Society’s upcoming production of All Shook Up will feature multiple generations of three different families performing side by side.
The show will run from February 10 to 12 in the Gleneagle Arena. Tickets for the highly anticipated show are on sale now. Music is well known to bring people of all ages together, and this is clearly evident within the Killarney Musical Society, where several families are sharing the stage this year.
The Spillane/Murray family boasts three generations in the production. Phil Spill-

ane has been an active member since she joined KMS in September 1989. This year, she performs alongside her daughter Amanda and her granddaughter Caoimhe, who is playing the character Lorraine. All three agree they are having great fun practising dance steps and harmonies together and will treasure this time forever.
Mother and daughter Annie and Alannah McIlroy are taking the stage together for the first time. Annie appeared in the
Killarney Civic Arts, a new group formed to advance cultural awareness and promote participation in the arts, is inviting the public to its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) this month.
The group, made up of artists and arts workers, aims to share experiences and insights with the community regarding the future and direction of cultural development in Killarney and the wider

Munster region.
Killarney Civic Arts invites anyone who cares about shaping creative places in the community to connect with them and share their thoughts and stories.
The first AGM will be held in the Deer-hunter lounge at the Dromhall Hotel, (V93PY80), on Saturday, December 13, at 10.00am. The event offers free entry and is hosted in an accessible room. For further information, the public may contact Dolores Lyne at 087 263 8720.

2023 production of Michael Collins, while Alannah joined the cast last year for Evita. They state that the best part of performing together is the quality time they share, not just during rehearsals but on the journeys to and from them, as both share a deep love for musicals. Finally, the mother and daughter pair of Linda and Eilise O’Donoghue continue a family tradition. While Linda’s father was involved with KMS back in 1986, Linda herself joined in 2015 after being per-
suaded by her daughter Eilise, who has been a member since 2012. Before each performance, the two rely on each other: Eilise checks Linda’s hair and makeup, while Linda makes sure Eilise’s costume is perfect. They also enjoy practising their alto lines together, making the experience especially meaningful.
The society looks forward to welcoming audiences to the Gleneagle Arena for the three-night run of All Shook Up next February.
Former Killarney Mayor Sean O’Grady said that the Municipal District is “going around in circles” in its efforts to find a suitable hangout space for local teenagers.
He said the issue was already solved more than 20 years ago, when Killarney Town Council identified the need for a dedicated youth space and the Franciscan Order stepped in to provide a large section of their premises for that purpose. The facility, developed with significant investment, offered a safe and well-run environment for young people and operated successfully for two dec-
ades.
O’Grady said the space had “ticked all the boxes” and was recognised at the time with a civic reception for the Franciscans. He questioned why a new location is now being sought, despite funding being available, when the original venue at the Friary remains suitable. He said the council and youth leaders should use the funding now allocated to resolve any issues with the existing site rather than starting again elsewhere. “The solution was found twenty years ago, and the solution remains in the Friary,” he said.

The excitement of the All-Ireland Football Championship was reignited at Lissivigeen National School last Friday when Kerry star Paul Murphy visited the school with the Sam Maguire Cup.
The All-Ireland medal winner, a native of Rathmore, received an "electric" and "enthusiastic reception" from the school's 270 pupils, who lined the grounds to greet him. According to the school, the children were "absolutely on fire with excitement."
From the moment he arrived, the footballer was described as a complete gentleman, gracious, and wonderfully engaging with the children. Paul Murphy
spoke to the pupils about his journey as an inter-county footballer and shared inspiring words about the importance of hard work, healthy habits, and following one’s dreams.
The students had prepared a series of questions, which the All-Ireland winner answered in detail. When offering advice for young athletes, Paul stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, and protein,
explaining that proper nutrition fuels performance. While acknowledging treats are fine in moderation, he noted that fast food should only be occasional. When asked about his role models growing up, Paul named three greats of the game, Seamus Moynihan, Maurice Fitzgerald, and Liam Hasset, as the players who most inspired him. Asked if he would play in another position, he eventually settled on centre forward, explaining that the role demands constant involvement in play, requiring both attacking and defensive work. Paul cited Sean O’Shea as his toughest opponent to
mark.
Of his three All-Ireland victories, Paul shared that this year's victory means the most to him, explaining that as a younger player, he did not fully grasp how rare such achievements are, and now treasures the moment deeply.
Following the Q&A, Paul took time to pose for photographs, sign autographs, and chat with pupils and staff. He also made a special visit to the school’s new special classroom, spending time with the pupils there and taking photographs. Before leaving, Paul performed one final honour by raising the school's Green Flag.

This year the chosen charity is Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, inspired by Killarney Man James Cahill, who says he owes his life to Kerry Mountain Rescue Team following an horrendous fall on Bothar na Gíge (the Zig Zags) while descending Carrauntoohil in July 2016.
James is so grateful for the courageous team for saving his life and wants to give back to the team, while having some fun along the way.
Derry and his crew will carry the coveted piece of silver along the 17 km trek, with a few stops to play music and have “a set dance around Sam”.
One definite stop is the newly restored sheep shed, or locally called ‘the red rose cafe’ at Eskamucky Glen.
The estimated time of trekking is approximately 6 hrs. For those who just want to walk as far as Derrycunnihy Church – own transport must be organised. A return bus from Kenmare to Killarney will be organised.

The first of the four Christmas in Killarney parades took place last Saturday night, attracting large crowds to the town centre. Families lined the streets as the festive floats, community groups and performers made their way through the town to officially start the Christmas season.

mentary mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies. St Brigid’s Presentation School Choir opened the evening with a performance of some Christmas carols, followed by festive music from the Gleneagle Concert Band. Santa made an appearance, immersing himself in the
festivities by joining in the carol singing and then leading the crowds in an exciting countdown to light the new tree. The tree, designed by Norma O’Donoghue, stands tall at 20 feet, creating a striking welcome for everyone arriving at the hotel. Santa delighted young visitors by taking photos and handing out a selection box to each child. The annual tradition continues to be a cherished event for the local community and Brehon staff, combining hospitality with the joy of Christmas while supporting a worthy local cause.

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.
After more than three decades of dedicated service, Mary O’Shea has hung up her counter keys at Killarney Post Office, retiring last Friday, a decision that surprised even herself
“I’m off one Monday every month,” she laughed, “so on Monday morning I decided I needed to wake up without an alarm clock on Tuesday to see if it had really sunk in!”
Although the offer of retirement came suddenly, Mary said the timing “just felt right.” Ever thoughtful of her colleagues, she first wondered how her leaving might affect the office. “But then I came around to thinking about my own family life,” she added. “I knew I’d miss it, but I also knew I was ready.”
A native of Kenmare, Mary first stepped behind a post office counter as a schoolgirl, working summers in the town’s post office before taking up maternity-leave cover in the sub-office run by John and Eileen O’Sullivan.
She married her husband Connie in 1992, and the couple set up home in Pinewood. The daily 45-minute drive to Kenmare soon made a post in Killarney an attractive option. In 1994, Mary made the move and never looked back. Over the years she rose through the ranks, first as Acting Branch Manager alongside Seanie McCarthy (RIP) under Pat O’Donoghue, and later as Deputy Manager under Liam Hartnett and Sean Byrne.
Mary has seen extraordinary changes across her 31 years with An Post. “When I began, there were no calculators,” she recalled. “Christmas parcels weren’t

online shopping deliveries, they were turkeys, bracks and cakes sent abroad,”
The Killarney office even had a full-time postcard stamp clerk, and rookies knew they weren’t fully initiated until they’d accidentally stamped themselves with the giant black date stamp. “It’s all done in Portlaoise now,” she said, “And I’m sure not even one percent of those postcards are sent anymore.”
She remembers the days of selling licences for bulls and black-and-white TVs, district court stamps, and doing all calculations in your head or with the old

Ready Reckoner. Then came computers, and with them a new era of banking, bill payments and gift cards, though the timeless savings certificates and bonds remained a constant.
As Killarney Post Office moved from specialist counters to 'all-service counters', Mary and her late colleague Mary Bailey travelled to Mallow for six weeks’ training, a memory she recalls with great fondness.
In 2000, her husband Connie joined the An Post family as a postman. “Once they got one O’Shea, they must have thought
they may as well take the set,” she said. Mary is deeply grateful for An Post’s flexibility over the years. “The term time meant I could raise our son Ian, family time I would never have got back.”
Since the retirement of Maurice Switzer in 2016, Killarney Post Office became an all-female team and earned a playful nickname from Manager Pat O’Donoghue: “Paddy’s Angels.” Mary looks back on those years with huge affection. The pandemic brought some of the toughest days of Mary’s career. “It was one of the most unprecedented and unwelcome changes,” she said. “We really missed our elderly customers collecting their pensions. The relief when restrictions lifted, to see them and talk to them again, was enormous.”
That interaction, she said, has always been one of the greatest joys of the job. Mary expects retirement to begin with a few simple pleasures. “I’ll miss all the girls at the counter, but I’ll enjoy daytime walks in the park with Margaret O’Connor, who’s retired nearly three years now. And who knows — maybe Anne Clifford might join us on her days off.”
As for a grand plan? “There is no plan — and that’s the plan,” she smiled. She looks forward to family time, crafting, and especially this Christmas, when her son Ian and his girlfriend Dayna return after two years travelling. In a lovely twist, Ian will be returning to take up his role with An Post just as Mary steps away. “We’re keeping the tradition going,” she joked. “One O’Shea clocks in as the other clocks out!”
A FOND FAREWELL
Warm tributes have poured in from staff, customers and friends — a testament to how deeply Mary has been woven into daily life at Killarney Post Office. Though she won’t say it herself, her presence will be missed far beyond the counter.

Maxol Regional Manager Dermot Cogan, Store Manager Brendan O’Connell, who collected the award on
Sheahan’s Maxol on the Muckross Road has plenty to celebrate after winning the Excellence in Customer Experience award at this year’s Maxol Excellence Awards, recognising the Kerry service station’s delivery of an outstanding customer experience.
Winners were presented with their awards at a lavish gala dinner during Maxol’s Retail Conference, which was recently held at The K Club.
The awards recognise best-in-class stations, both company owned and dealer-owned, to promote and reward excellence in station and store standards, customer experience, and community engagement across Maxol’s growing network of convenience-led service stations. They are assessed through regular standards audits, mystery shopper visits, and reviews of each store’s involvement with the local community.
In addition, each store’s community engagement for Maxol’s nominated charity partner, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, is included in the assessment of the overall programme.
Independent Dealer Aisling Sheahan operates Sheahan’s Maxol on the Muckross Road.
Her team’s dedication has made the store a trusted local favourite, and this year’s Excellence in Customer Experience award reflects that commitment. Under Aisling’s leadership, the staff consistently deliver a welcoming, high-quality experience.
Speaking about the win, Aisling said: “We are thrilled to receive the Excellence in Customer Experience award. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and this recognition is a reflection of the passion and hard work of our entire team. We take great pride in providing a warm welcome, great service, and a community-focused experience every single day. It’s wonderful to see those efforts recognised at a national level. None of this would be possible without the hard work, commitment and positivity of our staff at Sheahan’s, and I want to sincerely thank them, as well as our loyal customers, who support us all year-round."

Kerry Airport has received €1.4 million in funding to support payroll costs across air traffic control, fire services and security screening.
In total, €4 million in Exchequer funding is being allocated to Ireland West, Donegal and Kerry airports under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025. The announcement has been welcomed by Kerry TDs Michael Cahill, Danny Healy-Rae, Michael Healy-Rae and Norma Foley. The announced funding is in addition to the €7.8 million in capital supports announced for the same airports earlier this year. Overall, passenger traffic across these airports from January to end September this year has increased by 11% when compared with the same period last year. The Chief Financial Officer at Kerry Airport, Basil Sheerin, extended his appreciation to the Minister for Transport and Kerry politicians for their steadfast support. He said: “The funding provided for both operational and capital expenditure has been critical to delivering investment in our electric vehicle fleet, green energy initiatives, security infrastructure, and ongoing runway maintenance. These are commitments to a sustainable and secure future." Minister Darragh O’Brien said while today’s announcement marks the last round of funding under the current programme, the Government is committed to investing in regional airports and will create a new programme for 2026-2030.

More than 7 million Ryanair passengers have travelled through Kerry Airport since the airline began operating there in 1989. Ryanair’s Director of Communications, Jade Kirwan, welcomed the significant milestone saying it “showcases Ryanair’s continued support and investment in the region.” Ms Kirwan called on the government to continue supporting regional airports by expanding the scope of the Regional Airports Programme 2026-30 to at least 3m passengers per annum which she says would allow regional airports to grow traffic without being penalised for doing so. This winter, Ryanair is operating 58 weekly flights across 5 routes to/from Kerry Airport, including city break destinations like Frankfurt, Manchester, and London. Kerry Airport recently underwent a massive refurbishment, with a new arrivals hall unveiled earlier this month. It was officially opened by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

Bob Dylan played two gigs at INEC – and we’ll never see a video of it!
| By Eoghan McSweeney
Bob Dylan, one of the world’s most highly regarded, gifted and influential songwriters, became the biggest musician to ever play in Killarney.
The singer, who is estimated to have sold over 125 million records globally over the span of his six-decade long career, played at the INEC on November 23 and 24 during his Rough and Rowdy Ways worldwide tour. These gigs are considered a part of his iconic Never-Ending Tour that has been ongoing since June 7, 1988.
Mr Dylan blessed the Killarney crowd with an impressive and mystifying performance in the tight, intimate and atmospheric venue of the INEC. The display by Dylan and his band was subject to ubiquitously rave reviews, and all in attendance came to the conclusion that “Dylan still has it.” The setlist that lead to such praise sixty years into his career included songs like I Contain Multitudes, Key West (Philosopher Pirate), It Ain’t Me Babe, finishing with a cover of Paul Brady’s Lakes of Pontchartrain, with each song being greeted with an enthusiastic standing ovation upon conclusion. Similar verdicts ensued from the other shows that featured in the Irish leg of his tour which were in The Waterfront
Theatre in Belfast and Dublin’s 3Arena, where the 84-year-old Dylan closed the gig with a rendition of The Pogues’s Rainy Night in Soho in a touching tribute to Irish music great Shane MacGowan. As the crowd, consisting of both longtime listeners and younger fans who were discovering Bob Dylan anew, shuffled into Killarney’s premium venue to witness the most notable concert in the town’s history, phones were sealed away in pouches and photographers were prohibited. We currently live in a time where almost every concert is documented to the degree that its happenings can be revisited at any moment or even be vicariously experienced by people living anywhere across the globe. But there is a beautiful sense of irony in the fact that it is the most prominent and impressive show to ever take place in the INEC and its memory is permanently untouched and unavailable to anyone not in attendance, leaving this once in a lifetime show to live purely in the memories of those who were lucky enough to be there for either one of the two nights. These exceptional circumstances were perfect to curate even more of an 'in group' who will always be able to say “I was there” regarding Killarney’s most talked-about and high-profile concert. In a way, it is the lack of memories from this titanic show, that make it so special.

Firies National School has made history after becoming the first primary school ever to win the prestigious Excellence in Education Award at the Tech Industry Alliance (TIA) Leaders Awards 2025.
The school received a €5,000 prize sponsored by Trend Micro in recognition of its pioneering approach to digital learning and its exceptional commitment to STEM education.
The awards ceremony took place on November 28, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork, where leaders from across the South-West’s tech sector gathered for an evening celebrating innovation, collaboration, and achievement. Now in its 18th year, the black-tie gala has become a hallmark event, bringing together educators, start-ups, multinationals, SMEs, and community partners.
The Excellence in Education Award, proudly supported once again by Trend Micro, recognises schools that foster outstanding development of IT skills among students and teachers. Firies N.S. stood out for its forward-thinking use of technology, weaving digital tools deeply into everyday learning to build confidence, curiosity, and creativity.
“Our goal is to empower children to become independent thinkers, lifelong learners, and active participants in a technologically driven future,” said school principal, Claire Doyle. “Technology isn’t an add-on – it’s an integral part of how we teach and how children explore the world.”
Central to this vision is the school’s belief in the role of play and hands-on exploration in the primary curriculum, alongside a commitment to embedding digital learning at every level.
One of the school’s flagship projects is its whole-school LEGO Education initiative, which supports students as they learn to design, build, and programme interactive models using sensors, motors, and coding software. This structured, age-appropriate approach helps pupils think like engineers, developing leadership skills

and higher-order thinking along the way.
Even the youngest learners at Firies N.S. are immersed in technology. Junior classes begin with Sphero Indi cars, exploring early robotics, before progressing through Bee-Bots, Blue-Bots, and eventually advanced text-based coding by sixth class. The blend of hands-on robotics and screen-based coding helps students understand sequencing, digital communication, and logical thinking. Children also work with a range of other robotics resources, including Dash, Bot-
ley, and VEX, extending digital learning across the curriculum. A 3D printer donated by I-Form has enabled pupils to experiment with design, engineering, and model-making.
Two after-school STEM clubs, launched last year, provide additional opportunities for creative exploration. Students have embraced stop-motion animation, podcasting, and green-screen technology, culminating in a vibrant technology showcase where they presented their projects to the wider school community.

Two Killarney residents were among a small group of Ukrainians invited to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky during his official visit to Ireland this week.
NEWKD community worker Natalia Krasnekova and former St Brendan’s College student and current UCC student Stepan Krykun attended the meeting, which was organised by the Embassy of Ukraine and brought together around 40 Ukrainians from across the country.
President Zelensky and the First Lady chose an open conversation format, with attendees asking questions and raising issues about life in Ireland and the ongoing war. Natalia said it was “an inspiring and warm meeting” that gave Ukrainians who left home due to the war a sense of connection and support.
Stepan asked the President what Irish young people should know about Ukraine. President Zelensky said Irish people already understood Ukraine’s resilience and compared the country’s struggle to Ireland’s own fight for independence.

Members of the Legacy Elite Cheerleaders were the stars of the show at a Kerry Hospice fundraiser in the Brehon Hotel last Sunday.
The event, organised by Anomis Beauty Studio, drew a large crowd for an evening of entertainment in support of palliative care services in Kerry. Guests enjoyed a prosecco reception, finger food, raffles and live performances, but
it was the high-energy display, beside the Christmas tree, from the Legacy Elite squad that stole the spotlight. Their routine was one of the standout moments of the night and received huge applause from those in attendance. All proceeds from the event went directly to the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The fundraiser also marked the first anniversary celebration for Anomis Beauty Studio.
Natalia also briefly spoke with First Lady Olena Zelenska about the rollout of Ukrainian book collections into Irish libraries. Shelves have already been introduced in Tralee and Dingle through NEWKD's Ukrainian team.
The Embassy also invited Robert Carey of NEWKD and Michael Hall of MTU to attend President Zelensky’s address to the Dail.

Get your snacks and popcorn ready, it’s the biggest TV night of the year! The Late Late Toy Show returns to our screens tonight at 9.35pm.
Last month’s trailer showed Patrick Kielty and his team of astronauts suiting up for a mission unlike any other. The aim of the mission is to ensure every child can join in and feel the magic of the Toy Show, from Cork to Sydney and Carlow to Mars, every child can feel included. Over the decades, the Toy Show has had many iconic moments enjoyed by Irish viewers. Many still remember the heartwarming moment when Adam King was surprised by hospital porter John, a memory still etched in our hearts. In 2009, we were introduced to the legendary John Joe Brennan who wore a tweed jacket, glasses and had extremely insightful literary critiques. He told us that his dream career was to be a horologist. Nanny Pat became an instant favourite in 2019 when she surprised her grandson Tom on the show. Adam and Kayla Burke had us all in tears when they were surprised by their dad who was based in Mali with the defence forces.

A low flying aircraft, which has been examining and collecting data regarding Ireland’s hidden geology, has ceased operations over Kerry for 2025.
The Tellus Survey is a national programme funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and Environment with the aim of examining the chemical and physical properties of Ireland’s soil, rocks and water using airborne geophysical surveying.
This involves utilising a low flying aircraft that sits at just sixty meters above the ground to sense subterranean geological properties through measuring variations
in the Earth’s magnetic field and natural radiation. These geophysical giveaways would not otherwise be visible through other, more conventional mapping techniques. This method is the fastest and most cost-effective means of acquiring geophysical data on a regional scale.
As winter has set in the aircraft’s visibility has become obscured. This means flight operations over Kerry have now concluded for 2025, with work set to recommence in spring of 2026.
Over the course of the year, 69% of survey lines mapped over Kerry were completed. This data, which is set to be released in 2026, will help experts to continue to better our understanding of Kerry’s geology and natural resources.

With the festive season fast approaching, Christmas shopping is underway. New data from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission reveals fresh insights into consumer behaviour during the holiday season.
This year consumers expect to spend the same amount of money as last Christmas, €1,163 this year, versus €1,177 in 2024. People aged 45-54 anticipate spending the most. Statistics also show the differences between men and women, with the latter being more organised by start-
ing to save for present shopping earlier in the year. Three quarters of women also start their Christmas shopping before December, compared to just half of men. One of the most common Christmas presents last year was gift cards, with nearly two thirds of people receiving one, but the data shows that 22% of people who were given a gift card never used the card’s full value.
As overall spending has remained steady since last year, the real story lies in the amount of money wasted on gift cards, something that appears to be the perfect flexible present, but this data might inspire shoppers to rethink their presents.
Should the GAA start paying their players to keep them?
| By Eoghan McSweeney
Former Down Under 20s goalkeeper Charlie Smyth has written himself into the history books of foreign-born NFL players after nailing a 56-yard field goal during his debut for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. This comes in the wake of Mayo GAA’s most exciting prospect Kobe McDonald and Kerry’s own Ben Murphy who both recently signed contracts to join Aussie Rules sides St Kilda and Brisbane Lions. With a host of Irish talent already playing in Australia, and the NFL dream seeming like an increasingly likely opportunity with programmes like the International Player Pathway. It begs the question; can the GAA keep a hold of the top talent without paying their athletes?
Gaelic footballers making the move to the AFL is nothing new, but it is enough to frustrate spectators. Getting to see Dingle’s Mark O’Connor boss the midfield upon his return to his hometown, as he helped his club become county champions this year has justifiably made

Kerry supporters wonder “What if?”
The NFL sent flag football kits to over nine hundred secondary schools across Ireland earlier this year. This proves they are clearly interested in expanding their player pool, with Ireland being home to a wealth of useful kicking talent. With there being lavish opportunities of full-time sport available both Down Under and Stateside, the natural question is, how many young Gaelic footballers will end up plying their trade abroad before the GAA considers fighting to keep them?
616 patients are being treated on a trolley, chair or another inappropriate bed space today, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
The organisation has said the HSE have failed to adequately plan for flu season. INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha says the HSE have not learned any lessons from over twenty years of flu-related hospital overcrowding. She said: “Flu season is well flagged, it happens every single year, yet it is clear that no contingency plans are in place. There
is no point in trying to deal with a crisis when we are mid-flow.” Ms Ní Sheaghdha is calling on the HSE and other public sector healthcare employers to assure nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers and the public that they are taking action to ensure that all barriers to providing safe care are removed. There has been a 22% increase in the number of patients being admitted to hospital without a bed in the last 24 hours. Ms Ní Sheaghdha believes this is a cause of concern as respiratory infections are at large and circulating in the system.

Renowned architect and Home of the Year judge Hugh Wallace passed away unexpectedly at his home at the age of 68 earlier this week.
His husband Martin announced the tragic news on Instagram. He wrote: "It is with deep sadness and shock that I share the news that my beloved husband and soulmate, Hugh Wallace, passed away suddenly at home last night. I am heartbroken. Please respect my privacy at this deeply painful time. Martin." Wallace previously spoke about his alcohol addiction and how he was given a second chance at life after seeking help. His funeral took place in Dublin this morning.

Knockaderry Farranfore National School received a new set of football and basketball jerseys and shorts this week, sponsored by the Manor West Hotel in Tralee and produced by MFC Sports.
The presentation was made by Manor West Hotel General Manager Ruth O’Sullivan and Senior Kerry footballer Joe O’Connor, who is Munster Area Development Manager with MFC Sports.
Pupils decorated the school hall in green and gold for the occasion and were excited to meet the visitors. The school thanked Manor West Hotel for its generous support and said the new kit will be well used in upcoming games.
“The children enjoyed the visit and decorated the hall in green and gold in anticipation of the presentation. The BOM and staff wish to thank Ruth and Manor West Hotel for their very generous sponsor-
ship. The kit will certainly be put to good use,” said school principal Áine Daly.
Manor West Hotel said it was pleased to support the school and promote children’s sport and wellbeing. Knockaderry Farranfore NS, founded in 1888, now operates beside Farranfore GAA facilities, which the school uses regularly for training and matches.
“I would like to thank Joe and the MFC team for their incredible assistance in designing the kit. Who knows, we might even have a future Kerry All Ireland winner among us,” said Ruth O’Sullivan, General Manager, Manor West Hotel.

Killarney Court Hotel has donated €2,500 to Lissivigeen National School to support the development of its new sensory garden and inclusive play area.
The donation was raised through the hotel’s participation in the national Deposit Return Scheme over the past year, with staff collecting bottles and cans specifi-
cally to benefit the project.
The sensory garden initiative, led by the school’s Special Class team and Parents Association, aims to create an outdoor space designed to support all pupils, including those with additional needs. Last month, the school launched its Sensory Garden Raffle as part of its wider fundraising effort.

The long-awaited Beaufort Wastewater Scheme has taken a significant step forward following the Government’s decision to increase project funding to €7 million.
The uplift forms part of an additional €14.3 million announced under Measure A8 of the Multi-annual Rural Water Programme, supporting seven rural wastewater projects nationwide.
Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill welcomed the increase, saying the funding is “most welcome and long overdue,” but add-
ed that the project now needs to move ahead without further delay.
Minister Michael Healy-Rae also acknowledged the progress, stating, “This is a hugely important step forward for Beaufort,” and said he will continue pushing for delivery.
Deputy Danny Healy-Rae said the upgrade is essential for the village, noting, “Beaufort has waited long enough.”
The enhanced funding allows the scheme to proceed to the next stage, with all parties calling for construction to begin as soon as possible.

Killarney’s Colin and Kieran O’Donoghue claimed victory in the Modified section of the Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally, delivering a controlled run in their Ford Escort Mk2 to secure Colin’s second win in the category and Kieran’s first.
At the finish ramp outside the Plaza Hotel on Saturday evening, Colin O’Donoghue confirmed he is considering a step into the Triton Showers Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship next season. He said he plans to travel to Mayo in March to see how the opening round suits before making a decision.
O’Donoghue set the fastest time on all nine stages to secure the win over second-placed Chris Armstrong / Conor Smith, also in a Ford Escort. Third place went to Gary McPhillips and Conor Mohan, 17.9 seconds further back in their Escort.
The Modified section also featured the battle for the Carrick Cup, awarded in memory of Mike Gaine to the fastest Kenmare-based crew over Moll’s Gap. This year it went to Tommy Randles / Darragh Lynch, who set the pace among the local contenders and finished 35th overall. Randles, a long-serving club official, has hinted this could be one of his

final competitive outings.
The best Kerry Motor Club crew was
John Michael Kennelly / Dylan Harrington, who took fifth overall in the Modified division.
Dave Slattery / Denis Coffey continued their strong season with 13th overall (Class 6, 4th), while Hugh McQuaid and

Rathmore school teacher Declan Casey placed 15th overall and sixth in Class 6. Other locals included Seán Enright / Kevin Doherty who were Class 3 winners on the recent Thomond Rally and backed that up here with another steady finish in 26th.
Tadhg O’Sullivan / Frank Byrnes, Seán
Hartnett / Kieran Doherty, Raymond O’Neill / Jason O’Connor, Cyril Wharton / Donal Falvey and Ray Stack / Gene Stack brought their Escorts home safely inside the top 40.
Gary Healy / Niall Myers, switching from a Civic to a Toyota Twin Cam 20V, took third in Class 5.
Paudie O’Callaghan / Daniel Murphy brought their Starlet home fourth in Class 4.
Noel O’Sullivan / Nicholas Burke, one of the few crews to have contested every Historic Rally since it began in 1996, finished 50th overall.
Killarney father-and-son team Tom and Mark O’Sullivan completed the demanding event in their Peugeot 205 GTi. Representing Kerry Motor Club, Ken McKenna / PJ O’Dowd reached the finish in their Peugeot 205.
Kevin O’Donoghue / John McElhinney used Super Rally to return to the stages after mechanical trouble, as did Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy / Eamonn Creedon who were among several crews targeting future Carrick Cup success and completed their Honda EG6’s run under Super Rally as well.

Rob Duggan and Ger Conway produced one of the standout drives of the Killarney Towers Hotel Historic Rally on Saturday night, delivering a flat-out run over the Moll’s Gap night stage that will go down as one of the most memorable attacks in the event’s history.
The Ford Escort crew started the final test in third place, 34.7 seconds behind rally leaders and eventual winners Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy. With darkness falling Duggan and Conway went on the attack and were visibly committed from the start of the 18.6-kilometre stage. The pair barely lifted on the climb and descent of the Gap, taking 29.5 seconds out of Kelly/Kennedy and reaching the finish line on the bumper of the leading BMW. The effort was not enough to overturn the deficit, but it was a performance that will be talked about for years among local rally fans.
Duggan, the defending Modified champion, switched into the Historic division for the weekend after an opportunity arose to drive a full historic-spec Escort for the first time since 2019. While disappointed to miss out on victory, he said he was satisfied with third overall on his return to the category.
Duggan said afterwards he was “happy to be back in a full historic car” and satisfied with third place, even if the final charge fell short.
Their result came 40 years after another famous piece of Moll’s Gap folklore, when Billy Coleman caught and passed his Opel

team-mate Austin MacHale in similar night-time conditions, a comparison not lost on long-time followers of the event.
The late drama came after early favourites Kris Meeke and Noel O’Sullivan retired before the final run. They had led the rally from the opening stage and built a cushion of one minute 19 seconds but that advantage disappeared when their MATS-prepared BMW M3 developed engine problems on the first run down Moll’s Gap.
That cost 43.5 seconds and while they limped back to service in Kenmare the engine was beyond repair and retired from the rally lead just before the final test.
That handed control to Kelly and Kennedy, who had been managing differential trouble earlier in the day. Starting the night stage with 19.2 seconds in hand over John O’Donnell and Paddy Robinson, the Donegal crew held on to win by 1.5 seconds, securing back-to-back Historic Rally victories.
The result was also significant for Kennedy, who marked the drive with a tribute to the late Bertie Fisher. Kennedy and Fisher won the Rally of the Lakes in 1990, also in a BMW M3.
O’Donnell and Robinson were another Donegal crew to impress. They set consistent top three times throughout the Kenmare loop and moved ahead of Duggan after SS3. Their run on the final stage was solid and enough to secure second place overall. Their margin over Duggan ended at 3.7 seconds.
World Drift star Conor Shanahan, partnered by Andy Hayes finished fourth overall in his BMW M3.
This was Shanahan’s best result yet in historic rallying in what only his fifth start ever in the discipline.
Despite a moment on stage seven where they rubbed an Armco barrier protecting a lake edge the young Cork driver gained confidence as the day progressed and moved ahead of Fergus O’Meara on the repeat loop.
O’Meara and Brian Duggan finished fifth overall after a steady day that included an off-road moment on SS6. The local man had been running fourth early in the rally but slipped back behind Shanahan after his excursion.
Stephen Greaney and Jonathan Folan brought their Toyota Corolla WRC home in sixth.
John Bonner / John Michael O’Donnell were the next-best Escort pairing, taking seventh overall and first in class after a solid, mistake-free run.
Michael McDaid and Denver Rafferty were close behind in eighth overall, just 8 seconds off Bonner’s pace.
Neil Williams with local co-driver John Falvey, another strong Escort crew finished ninth overall in what was Falvey’s first Historic rally finish.
Williams had been expected to challenge for the class win, but time lost in the first loop left him with too much to recover on the afternoon pass.
Tommy McDonagh and Paul Murphy completed the top ten 10 in another Ford Escort.
Belgian legend Patrick Snijers, driving alongside Davy Thierie, finished 11th in another M3. Snijers was competing on the event for the first time. An ill-handling car in the morning cost valuable time but he was much more on the pace in the afternoon.
Alan Ring’s Subaru 555 retired on the final run with a gear-selector issue, only a few hundred metres from the finish. It was a busy week for local BMW dealer Paul Ahern, who finished the rally in 27th overall with co-driver Kieran Murphy and fourth in the F4 class in their BMW M3. Ahern also played a major role off the stages, hosting Friday’s triple BMW M3 E30 unveiling at Aherns BMW in Castleisland, where the MATS-built cars of Kris Meeke/Noel O’Sullivan and Shanahan/ Hayes were revealed to the public in one of the standout pre-event showcases.

With love we remember our dear father Tony McCarthy Park Drive, Killarney who died on 9th December 2007.
Dad
What I would give if I could say I will go and see my Dad today
To hear your voice, to see your smile
To sit and talk with you a while To get together in the same old way This is my dearest wish today.
Too dearly loved to be forgotten by your daughter Marguerite, son-in-law Neil and grandchildren Ella and Ethan.
Dad
I did not know that morning
What sadness the day would bring You were gone before I knew it
And I could not do a thing I did not see you close your eyes
Or hear your last sigh
I was not there to hold your hand
Or say a last goodbye It broke my heart to lose you
Your parting caused such pain
Thank you for the years we shared Until we meet again.
Loved and missed everyday by your daughter Michelle, son-in-law John, grandchildren Clara, Emma and Cialann, and great-grandchilden Layla Mai, Sonny, Lola and Joey.
Dad If I could write a story It would be the greatest ever told Of a kind and loving father Who had a heart of gold He never looks for praises Was never one to boast He went on quietly working For those he loved the most I remember all he taught me The good times that we had Glad to be his daughter and proud to call him Dad.
Always loved and sadly missed your daughter Tracy, grandchildren Christopher and Alanna and great grandchildren Sofia, Caleb and Jayden. xxx
Dad
When God came and took you Dad He knew what you were worth He took the finest Dad That ever walked this earth It isn’t what we write Or even what we say It’s what we feel inside Dad As we think of you today.
Always in our thoughts, your son Anthony, daughter-in-law Joanne and grandchildren Lauren, Ross, Sarah and Keva.
Dad I think of you in silence And make no outward show For what it meant to lose you Only those who love you know.
Sadly missed and never forgotten, your loving son Michael, daughter-in-law Sharon, grandchildren Hailey, Erica, Noah and Freya.
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Christmas in Heaven
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, with tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow, The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of my undying love
After all “Love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always more important in the stories Jesus told.
Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or love he has for you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
Loved with a love beyond compare, your heartbroken Mom and Dad. xxx

EAMONN FITZGERALD & SEAN MORIARTY ADAM MOYNIHAN
Eamonn Fitzgerald reports as Dr Crokes defeat Rathore after extra time in a thrilling East Kerry final
O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL
Dr Crokes 1 - 15 | Rathmore 0 - 16 AET FITZGERALD STADIUM
Goals win matches is one of the wellworn sports cliches and even though only one was scored in last Sunday’s O’Donoghue Cup final, it was crucial in Dr Crokes lifting the coveted cup for the
34th time since its inception in 1956.
Evan Looney, Tony Brosnan and Brian Looney combined to find the right man in the right place at the right time to deliver a pinpoint pass across the square.
Micheál Burns’ piledriver left Rathmore keeper William Casey with no chance to save.
It wasn’t the match-winning score. That brace came in the final minutes of the second period of extra time when Crokes and Kerry teammates Brosnan and Burns kicked the winning points.
So near and so far for a splendid Rathmore team that were in control for so much of this game, but their wides’ tally cost them dearly.
Both sides had to line out without key players, and both made significant ad-
justments. Kerry All -Star goalkeeper Shane Ryan was deployed at number 11 where he was marked by Evan Looney and he was Rathmore’s top scorer on 0-9 points (one two-point free and six frees), but he was well curtailed in general play. His deputy Casey had a great game. Rathmore were the better team in the opening 20 minutes with Dan Murphy playing a starring role, but Crokes clung on and Burns’ strike propelled them into a 1-5 to 0-6 lead by half-time.
SECOND HALF
Rathmore were back level early in the second half with the impressive Brian Friel, - no relation to the famous playwrightshot 2 splendid points into the Daltons Avenue posts to show the scoreboard beaming out level scores once more.
Two-pointers by Brosnan (two) and Billy Courtney sent Crokes six points clear (1-11 to 0-8) in the 46th minute but they then went scoreless as champions Rathmore fought back, inspired by the very impressive Murphy and his two-pointer. Then Ryan pointed to leave them just one point adrift (1-11 to 0-13). The final three minutes of normal time were hec-
tic. After a melee in front of the stand, referee Evan Horan red carded Ciarán Collins and Micheál Burns was sinbinned. All eyes on the electronic clock in the countdown to the hooter. Rathmore were patient holding possession unperturbed by the hooter sound and Cathal Ryan kicked a superb point from the left wing to earn a well-deserved draw. The champions had fought back from a sixpoint deficit.
And so to extra time. Would there be sufficient daylight to play the extra time and possible penalty shootout? Just about. Shane Ryan gave Rathmore a one-point lead as Crokes missed two scoring opportunities with wides. A Burns point had the sided deadlocked again at the end of the first period of extra time. Mark Reen kicked a marvellous point for the holders to keep it level four minutes into the second period. Penalties? Oh no. Neither side deserved to lose in this unseasonal live odyssey. Not for the first time, Burns and Brosnan took the initiative to notch the two points and victory. Full credit to both sides for an absorbing contest. Man of the Match: Micheál Burns.
After the game I spoke with Kieran O’Leary, one of the Dr Crokes veterans who had 13 O’Donoghue Cup medals in 2023 and defied the superstitious number to make it a record 14.
Why do you keep going on Kieran, espe-

cially on dark, wintry, wet days like today in the Stadium?
“I love it”. Love what? “I love just playing for Crokes and always enjoy the craic, the camaraderie, the challenge of helping out in any way. Pulling on the Crokes jersey is

very special for me anytime, anywhere.”
So, is this it now? “This is it, for today.”
I have seen referee Evan Horan officiating at many games including last Sunday’s
final and rate his performances highly. He implements the New Rules as they are meant by Jim Gavin’s committee to entertain. He does not tolerate verbal abuse and uses common sense in how he applies the rules, moreover in difficult playing conditions such as Sunday’s final. What a shame to have your premier East Kerry Board competition decided on the very last day of November. That’s the downside of the present GAA calendar. January to July for intercounty and the rest for the club scene. That window is too narrow for the EKB and their equivalents nationwide.
This was a special one for the EKB, celebrating their Centenary. They made a special effort by producing a fine programme and hosting an underage mini game at half-time between Kilcummin and Laune Rangers, representing the first senior final organised in 1924. Flag bearers from all of the clubs and the traditional pipe band pre-match team parade were great.
However, the GAA should rethink the schedule, ease the All -Ireland finals into August, facilitating local schedule of games and more flexibility to aim for prestigious games such as the O’Donoghue Cup final to its traditional September position. It won’t happen in 2026. Would you believe it, the All-Ireland champions will have their first competitive game on January 6, and you can expect new faces. Up to 20 have been called in already and more will be tried out.
Listry 2 - 23 | Glenflesk 2 - 13
A blast of points soon after halftime was crucial in Listry winning the 2025 O’Sullivan Cup final with a 10-point win over Glenflesk.
Listry’s full forward line of Cathal O’Donoghue, Pádraig O’Donoghue and James Clifford did a lot of the damage. Glenflesk did hold a 1-8 to 2-4 half-time lead – not a wide margin considering how much procession they had.

Two early Listry scores from Cathal O’Donoghue to start the second half put Listry back in front and they dominated thereafter, capturing the cup for the first time since 2008. They deserved the victory with Man of the Match Ryan Carey outstanding. Captain Aaron O’Shea led his side well.
Just a fortnight after winning the Fr Galvin Cup, Listry are once again celebrating silverware.

There could potentially be six Kerry schools heading into the quarter-finals of the Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster Senior Colleges), with five already qualified. St Brendan’s, Tralee CBS, Intermediate School Killorglin, Presentation Secondary School Milltown and St Patrick’s Castleisland are all in the last eight, and Kenmare could join them if they win their playoff clash with Clonmel next week.
St Brendan’s may not be the force they once were but they advanced from their group in second position. In the first game they were beaten by eventual table-toppers Clonakilty. The West Cork outfit are powered by Cork minors Dylan Harrington, Joey O’Leary and Seán Whelton, who combined for 10 points versus the Sem. The Killarney school fell to a five-point defeat in Cill na Martra, a result which many were not expecting.

This left the 23-time winners of the competition in a spot they don’t find themselves very often: needing to win their last two games to advance.
Next up was Coláiste Choilm of Ballincollig. The Sem took a five-point lead into the dressing room at half-time, with Kerry minor Ben Kelliher shining. The scoreline read 1-7 to 1-2 at the interval. Despite a second half rally from the Cork side, with Cork minor Joe Miskella to the fore and Seán Murphy getting a
goal, strong performances from Liam O’Brien, Kelliher and Joey McCarthy lifted Brendan’s to a one-point victory (1-12 to 2-8).
It was a do-or-die scenario for the Sem in their final group game against Skibbereen as even a win, depending on other results, might not guarantee them knockout football.
Skib knocked over the opener through Luke O’Sullivan but the Sem rallied back when John Henderson found Kelliher at
the back post for a green flag. Impressive displays from Kelliher and Liam O’Brien gave them a 1-8 to 0-4 half-time lead.
The Cork side were blown away in the second with goals from John Henderson, Mark Kennelly and James Dempsey as the Sem ran out resounding 4-23 to 0-11 winners, booking a place in the knockout stages in the process.
The quarter-finals are due to take place in mid-January.

Kerry FC have softened the blow of losing talented homegrown midfielder Ronan Teahan to Dundalk by signing Galway United player Vincent Borden. The New Yorker will link up with Colin Healy’s squad ahead of the 2026 League of Ireland season, which gets underway at the beginning of February.
Teahan’s departure was confirmed by the club in a lengthy statement released on Tuesday.
“Despite our best efforts since July to keep Ronan in the Kingdom, he has decided to take on the challenge of the Premier Division with Dundalk. From his earliest days in the KDL & Kerry FC Academy, he has shown immense talent and commitment, embodying the values of our club both on and off the pitch.
“We are proud to have played our part in Ronan's development, providing him with the platform and opportunities to showcase his ability at senior League of Ireland level. His progress is a testament to the importance that Kerry FC give to nurturing young players and giving them a chance to shine
“While we are sad to see him leave, we

are equally proud to see him take this next step in his career. Everyone at Kerry FC wishes Ronan the very best as he embarks on this new chapter. Thank you, Ronan, for your contribution to Kerry FC. You will always be part of our story.”
Borden (26) lined out 96 times for Galway United. He played a key role in their promotion from the First Division in 2023, scoring 10 goals as the Westerners earned promotion to the Premier Division in emphatic fashion. He was a pivotal player in 2024 and 2025 as the club retained their top-flight status.
His previous clubs include New York Red Bulls and NK Rudar Velenje of Slovenia.
“I’m excited to join Kerry FC for the 2026 season,” Borden told KerryFC. com. “I can’t wait to get to know the club and meet the players and staff. I hope to start the season strong!”
Kerry manager Colin Healy said he is “thrilled” to sign Borden. “He’s a proven midfielder in the league and he brings huge experience from both the Premier Division and a winning First Division dressing room. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Kerry and working alongside him on the training pitch. He will be exciting to work with in 2026.”

The Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers claimed the W in the latest instalment of the Killarney Derby as they overcame the challenge of the Cougars last Saturday night.
Imports Steve Kelly and Sam Grant along with academy graduates Mark Sheehan and Eoin Carroll accounted for the lion’s share of the Lakers’ scoring tally against their fierce local rivals. The quartet combined for a whopping 98 points.
The Cougars gave a good account of themselves and at one stage they narrowed the gap to six (83-77) thanks, in part, to Seán Conway and Simon Olanipekun, but the Lakers steadied the ship and sailed home, eventually running out 16-point winners (106-90).
Luke O’Hea’s charges are Dublin bound this Saturday for a National Cup quarter-final against Templeogue. Tip-off in TUD Tallaght is at 7pm.
Next up for the Cougars is a home Division 1 fixture versus the Tipp Talons on Saturday. That one gets underway at the Pres Gym at 7.30pm.
LAKERS SCORERS: Stephen Kelly 34, Sam Grant 28, Mark Sheehan 19, Eoin Carroll 17, Marko Bencic 4, Pablo Murcia

WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Utility Trust St Paul’s fell to a 55-69 defeat to Killester in the Women’s Super League as a sub-par first-quarter showing left them with too much to do in front of their home fans in Killarney. Paul’s did manage to put pressure on the league leaders – they trailed by just five points with five minutes to go – but it just wasn’t their day as the Dubliners pulled clear.
This defeat is only their second of the season and they remain well positioned to challenge for honours.
The scorers for St Paul's were Maisie Burnham 23, Tara Cousins 17, Denise Dunlea 5, Lorraine Scanlon 4, Lovisa Hevinder 3, Síofra O’Shea 2, Leah McMahon 1.
James Fleming’s side are off this weekend but they will be back with a bang the following Saturday when they host Glanmire. Brunell and the Waterford Wildcats will also visit Killarney before the end of 2025.

KDL PREMIER A: Killarney Athletic 2 - 1 Tralee Dynamos. Josh Bowler x 2. U17 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 4 - 3 Killarney Celtic. Ryan Kissane x 1 Leo Allen x 1 Jayden Hurley x 2. Our U17’s welcomed Killarney Celtic to Woodlawn Saturday evening in the second derby of the season, and this one didn’t disappoint for action. Our boys started the brighter of the two and fashioned a few early chances and the deadlock was broken after 10 minutes when Adam took a quick free kick to Jayden and his inch perfect ball found Ryan floating in at the back post to slot home. 1-0. This seemed to spur our neighbours into action, they started to dominate possession and scoring 3 goals to boot, one goal a spectacular strike from their No.9 HT 1-3. Our boys regrouped at half time and came out in the second half with more determination to get back into the game. With 20 minutes remaining Jayden got us back into it with a super free kick. 2-3. a minute later we were level, when Leo latched onto a through ball and slotted home 3-3. At this stage the game was frantic with really good chances for both sides, Celtic hit the post after a fingertip save by Dylan, the Celtic keeper also pulled off two good saves to keep the game at 3-3. With light fading fast in the 92nd minute, Leo chased a ball that looked to be going out for a throw, slide to keep it in, rose to his feet and drove into the box and was upended for a penalty kick. Up stepped Jayden and riffled the penalty to the top right corner. FT 4-3. This was a superb game of football between two good sides, and we look forward to the next encounter. Thanks to ref on the day also.
BOYS U15 DIVISION 2: Killarney Athletic B 7 – 1 LB Rovers A Artem Dzhandra, Daniel Quinlan, Maks Wesolowski, Dylan O’Connor, Jack Gleeson, Ryan O’Keeffe, Malachy Audley x 1 each. A dominant display from start to finish by our young blues this afternoon. A performance we’ve been waiting for from this group of players as we know what they’re capable of producing. Brave on the ball, finding pockets, playing 1-touch and 2-touch and showing real intelligence to break lines all afternoon. The boys worked for each other, moved the ball superbly and kept creating for teammates even when through on goal themselves. A brilliant team performance all round. Thanks very much to LB Rovers and the Ref. MOTM - Maks Wesolowski.
U15 BOYS DIVISION 3: MEK A 8 Killarney Athletic D 6. Goals: Leon Hebda (3), Jofre Ylla, Eric Reed, Cillian Sheahan. 6 great goals and fantastic all-round effort unfortunately wasn’t enough in the end away to MEK A on Saturday. Despite trailing for a long period of the game, the lads stayed within touch and fought back to 6-6 with less than 10 minutes to go. However it wasn’t to be in the end,
we missed a penalty to take the lead and MEK scored twice late on to seal it.
GIRLS U16S PREMIER: LB Rovers 1 - 3
Killarney Athletic Lillian Slattery x 1
Meadbh O’Brien x 1 Roxy Warwo x 1.
The girls made the trip to Ardfert to play under lights this evening in a very even game with both sides playing great football. Athletic scored all their goals in the first half and were very dominant in the second half LB really put it up to them getting one back and really making a game of it. But the girls really have a confidence about them and are playing some fantastic football and they were never going to allow themselves to lose this game. We like to thank the Ref and LB for hosting us.

U12 GIRLS PREMIER: Park 1 v 2 Mastergeeha A. An early start for our U12 girls on Sunday morning. Great win with Gracie Maher scoring both goals and special mention to Olivia O’Connor who gave a player of the match performance.
U14 GIRLS PREMIER LEAGUE: Mastergeeha 0–0 Killarney Athletic. Despite what the score line suggests, this was an excellent, hard-fought battle between two evenly matched sides. The first half was nip-and-tuck with chances at both ends, and the second half was just as competitive. We came agonisingly close twice in particular, with Sophie Moynihan at the heart of both moments. A cracking corner that smashed off the post and a superb free kick that forced a fingertip save from the opposition keeper. Not to be today, but a well-earned point for both teams. Thanks to Killarney Athletic for another sporting and competitive game — no doubt we’ll cross paths again later in the season.
U13 BOYS NATIONAL TROPHY ROUND 3: Mastergeeha 2-2 Regional Utd AET. (Penalties Mastergeeha 7-8 Regional Utd). Goal Scorers were Warren O’Boyle and Ronan Casey. Man of the Match Callum O’Connor. Spectators at Kilbrean Park were witness to a superb game on
Saturday afternoon which ebbed and flowed from end to end with our boys going toe to toe with our visitors, Premier Division Limerick side, Regional Utd. A superb through ball from Leo Barry found Warren O’Boyle who made no mistake on the 13th minute. Ronan Casey doubled our lead in the 21st minute as our boys were playing at a tempo and with energy that had the visitors on the back foot with Leo Barry, Matthew O’Riordan, Adam Cremin and Callum O’Connor working tirelessly and resolute defending from Paddy O’Keeffe, Donnacha O’Callaghan, Luke O’Sullivan and David Fleming. A superb piece of defending by Luke O’Sullivan protected our 2-0 lead on the 40th minute and moments later Adam Cremin went so close to making it 3-0 when his effort from the verge of the box hit the post. By now Regional were throwing caution to the wind and they pulled one back with 17 minutes remaining. Our boys again responded well and a superb free kick from Warren O’Boyle forced the Regional goalkeeper into a top corner save to deny Warren his second goal of the day. Regional piled on the pressure for the remaining 10 minutes and with 2 minutes of normal time remaining they got back on terms when a header from a free on the right wing nestled in the bottom corner. After a highly entertaining hour, we were heading for extra time. Eoin O’Leary, Tom Hughes and Conor Murphy brought fresh legs in extra time, and they very much played their part in what was a very evenly contested 20 minutes where chances were at a premium at either end. A penalty shootout therefore was required to separate the teams. Despite a superb save from our keeper Daniel McNeer and excellently executed penalties by our boys, it was not to be our day. We could not have asked for more from our boys today who gave their absolute all. Penalties is a difficult way to lose out but they were magnanimous in defeat, and we are very proud of their efforts on the today. Thanks to the referee and to our club for providing top class food to both teams after the game. Thanks also to our parents who brought home baking and for their wonderful support of the players. Finally, well done to Regional Utd on advancing to Round 4. O'DONOGHUE CUP FINAL: Dr. Crokes 1:15 Rathmore 0:16. We claimed the O’Donoghue Cup after a gripping extra-time win over Rathmore. We started well with early scores from Tony Brosnan and Micheal Burns helping settle the side before Micheál struck a well-taken goal to give Crokes a 1-05 to 0-05 lead at half-time. We pushed ahead in the second half through a pair of excellent
two-pointers from Billy Courtney and another from Tony Brosnan. Rathmore battled back strongly. Despite being reduced to 14 men late on, they managed to bring the game level at 1-11 to 0-14 and force extra time. Rathmore edged in front during the first period of extra time, but we showed great composure when it mattered most. Brian Looney clipped over a crucial score, followed by points from Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan. This was a tremendous team performance full of work rate and resilience. EAST KERRY MINOR FINAL: Our minor team finished the season with a good win over Gneeveguilla in the East Kerry Minor final on Sunday morning. With both sides short a number of players due to injury, they played 13-a-side which meant there was plenty of room for the forwards and a high scoring game ensued. The opening exchanges were even enough, Fossa had scores from David Butler and Shay McCormick, but Gneeveguilla struck for a goal after four minutes and the visitors led by two points after ten minutes of play. Fossa got to grips with the game at this stage, the outstanding Shay McCormick struck for 1-1 inside a minute, Harry O’Connor kicked two points and in the 16th minute, one of the youngest players on the pitch, Eoin Bennett scored a fantastic goal. Gneeveguilla kicked two points without reply but a second goal from the livewire Eoin Bennett followed by scores
from Mikey Moroney and Harry O’Connor left Fossa with a good lead at the break, 3-9 to 1-6. Gneeveguilla upped the ante at the start of the second half and kicked three points without reply but Shay McCormick continued his brilliant first half form to score 1-3 to settle Fossa. An unfortunate injury to our midfielder, Mark Kennelly delayed the game for some time but on the resumption of play David Butler and Jack Hallissey took control of matters, kicking some fine scores and winning vital possession. Ryan Brady pulled off a magnificent save as Gneeveguilla went in search of goals and Jack Spillane broke up numerous attacks. Mikey Moroney scored the last goal of the game to leave Fossa winners on a score of 5-18 to 3-10. Well done to the players and management on a very successful year at this grade, it has been a long season but with plenty of silverware to show for their efforts. We wish Mark Kennelly and all our injured players a speedy recovery. Thanks also to Gerry Daly of the Killard Group in Australia who were our minor team sponsors again this year. Team; Ryan Brady, Jack Spillane, Luke McCann, Derek O’Gorman, Jack Hallissey 0-2, Conor O’Mahony, David Butler 0-3, Mark Kennelly, Shay McCormick 2-6, Cathal Breen (Capt.), Harry O’Connor 0-5, Eoin Bennett 2-0, Mikey Moroney 1-1, James O’Meara 0-1, Sam O’Leary.

Several Killarney volunteers stepped in to assist with the running of the competition, including the club’s youngest trainee referees, Patrik Polubnak and James Maher, who took charge of a number of under-12 bouts. “Our players have trained extremely hard over the past few weeks and it’s great to see that work pay off,” said Tim Kelly. “A special mention to Emily O’Donoghue De Vries, who followed up her recent bronze in Galway by defeating several of the same opponents to take Gold today. With Cliona Hegarty extending her winning streak by winning Gold again.” Killarney Judo Club returned home with a record medal haul: 9 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Tim on 086 260 1591.
REGULATIONS: Anglers should be aware that the draft 2026 Salmon & Seatrout Regulations have been published with dramatic impact for all anglers. The document is available on the Inland Fisheries Website at fisheriesireland.ie. Our club, our affiliated bodies along with local federations will be making submissions to offer the anglers viewpoint to these proposals and highlight the flawed approach being taken by the Department. A Reduction in Salmon and Seatrout
Angling Blue Tag allocation of 10 tags to 3 tags and same restricted to the period June 1st – August 31 is outlined in the draft. The reduction on the amount of tags available to the waters is in the guise of protecting the species yet facilitating the ongoing practice of netting on the catchment , thus flying in the face of actually wanting to make any serious moves to protect the species, rather it just removes the angler from the environment. Netting would be permitted in June and July as proposed. Anglers have already seen a cut in tags allocation from 20 to 10 without any corresponding reduction in tags to the nets men. Any document that pertains to support sustainability while continuing to licence commercial netting on the very same waters does not make any sense. Make sure and have your say on this very important document that impacts not only our traditional angling but fails to support the very species it claims to be protecting.
