Concerns raised over proposed college timelines at former Pretty Polly site

Concerns have been raised over the projected delivery schedule for the proposed Killarney College of the Future on the former Pretty Polly site on Park Road.

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science this week published its Capital Sectoral Plan 2026–2030, outlining timelines for projects across the country. The plan lists the Killarney development as remaining at Stage 1, the initial step in the approval process, with an indicative construction period stretching from 2027 to 2035.

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae welcomed the release of the Sectoral Plan and the investment commitments for Kerry, but said the Killarney timeline falls significantly short of what had been expected. He said the project was first announced in 2022 and should be far further along.

“A timeline of 2027–2035 is far too broad and far too slow,” he said. “Good work has been done locally by Kerry ETB, but the project is no further on today than it was under the last government. That isn’t good enough for Killarney or for Kerry.”

LOCAL IMPACT

The plan confirms that the development remains at Stage 1: Strategic Assessment and Preliminary Business Case It has not yet progressed to design, tender or any stage where detailed funding

can be approved. Minister Healy-Rae said this is a major concern for a project intended to support key local industries including tourism, hospitality, renewable energy and apprenticeships.

“We cannot allow this project to drift for another decade,” he said. “Government needs to inject urgency and move this beyond reports and assessments. This is a flagship project and it must progress much faster.”

The Minister said he will now work with Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless and Minister of State at the Department of Further and Higher Education Marian Harkin to seek an accelerated timeframe.

“Killarney deserves delivery, not decade-long timelines,” he said. “The plan

sets out a framework but it needs pace and firm decision-making behind it.”

While critical of the Killarney timeline, he welcomed the inclusion of other Kerry projects such as upgrades at Monavalley Training Centre and the Listowel campus of Kerry College.

The broader plan outlines government investment priorities for the further and higher education sector over the next five years. For Killarney, the focus now shifts to whether the Project Team, Kerry ETB and the Department can move the scheme to the next approval stage. The Killarney College of the Future project aims to convert the former Pretty Polly and Sara Lee factory buildings into a modern Further Education and Training campus. It would include a National Centre of Excellence for Hospitality training,

Council approves 70-unit housing plan PAGESIX

Kerry County Council has approved planning permission for a 70-unit housing development on the N72 Hans Liebherr Road.

The project, lodged by Ross-Park Residential HS Limited, will be built on lands between the Cleeney and Ballydowney roundabouts.

The development will require the demolition of an existing house on the site and the decommissioning of its septic tank.

The approved plans include a mix of detached, semi-detached and townhouse units. Four mews buildings will also be

constructed, providing a total of 19 additional homes.

In all, the project will deliver 14 four-bed units, 37 three-bed units, and 19 twoand three-bed mews units. Vehicle and pedestrian access will be created from St Margaret’s Road, and the plans include landscaping, drainage works and the undergrounding or diversion of existing overhead lines.

A Nature Impact Statement was submitted as part of the application.

Kerry County Council has attached 36 conditions to the approval.

a National Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Green training, apprenticeship facilities, and a major lifelong learning hub. The project has capacity for more than 3,000 learners each year once fully operational. Kerry ETB previously confirmed that the site, located off the N22 and less than two kilometres from Killarney town centre, offers a building footprint of approximately 11,000 square metres. The repurposing of the factory buildings has long been viewed as a key opportunity to expand training provision in the region. The project received permission earlier this year to move beyond the initial Strategic Assessment stage, but the Sectoral Plan shows that substantial progress has not yet been achieved.

The passing of retired businessman Seamus Kiely this week was widely felt across the Killarney area.

Mr Kiely died peacefully on Wednesday morning, surrounded by his family in the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry.

Described as a man ahead of his time, Mr Kiely was Kerry’s leading electrical goods and music trader for decades.

Mr Kiely first demonstrated his entrepreneurial skills by operating a bar in the old town hall ballroom.

In the late 1960s he opened a small record shop at the bottom of High Street where he sold records and cassettes, introducing Killarney people to international music stars.

Many locals of a certain age bracket would have bought their first albums from Kiely’s.

Later, Mr Kiely expanded this business to include televisions, radios, and household appliances.

Always at the cutting edge of new technology, he sold early computer applianc-

es like the Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum long before personal computers were in every household.

In their heyday, Kiely’s Electrical were the largest independent electrical retailer in Munster, employing over 40 staff across five stores (in Killarney, Tralee, Ennis and two in Limerick).

The head office was based in Killarney and there was a warehouse in Newcastle West. Mr Kiely was fiercely proud of his Killarney roots.

Killarney Advertiser Managing Director Cormac Casey said: "I am saddened to learn of the death of Seamus Kiely, an entrepreneur, a loyal supporter of the Killarney Advertiser, a man of integrity to do business with and a man away ahead of his times."

Prior to his retail ventures, he was also a pub and nightclub owner. He operated the legendary Hardy’s Nite Club, on College Street, where McSorley’s now

stands.

Demonstrating innovation in every business sense, he opened an out-oftown electrical goods showroom in the Woodlands Industrial Estate, long before out-of-town shopping centres were the norm.

Later, he moved to a massive unit half way between Killarney and Farranfore, which was known as Kiely’s Supersave. This warehouse sold discounted goods long before such stores like Eurosaver were common in towns across Ireland.

A founder member of Killarney Rotary Club, Mr Kiely demonstrated fierce loyalty to his customers and staff.

Patrick Rowe, Financial Controller at KC Print, who worked with Mr Kiely during the business’s peak, paid tribute to his former boss.

“He was a very astute businessman and a tough negotiator,” Mr Rowe said. “His basic business principle was to look af-

ter the customer and they’ll repay you with their loyalty. He always looked to stock the latest cutting-edge products at a competitive price in a convenient location served by knowledgeable staff. He was a good judge of character and would have you sized up in no time. He was always the ‘the smartest person in the room’ and could compute figures in his head faster than any accountant’s calculator! He could also be a bit of a rogue with an infectious laugh and up for a ‘bit of devilment’. He was a generous employer who looked after his staff and expected loyalty and hard work in return.” He is survived by his wife, Nuala, daughter Louise, son-in-law Daniel, and grandchildren Isabelle, Harry, and Henry. Seamus’s funeral mass took place on Friday morning at St Mary’s Cathedral before he was laid to rest at Aghadoe Cemetery.

Jessie Buckley lands Golden Globe Award nomination International Hotel sold!

Killarney native Jessie Buckley secured a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the acclaimed drama Hamnet

Buckley is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama).

She stars in Hamnet, the film adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's book, where she plays Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare. Buckley's co-star, Paul Mescal, who plays Shakespeare, was also nominated.

Buckley has been listed by bookies as one of the favourites to lift the award.

The landmark International Hotel in Killarney has been sold, although the details of its new owner have not yet been confirmed.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that the property was purchased by a well-known local family already established in the hotel and hospitality sector.

The 98-bedroom property, located in the centre of town next to the jarvey stand and a short walk from Killarney National Park, was placed on the market last September with a guide price of between €18 million and €20 million.

CBRE, who handled the sale, had previously described the deal as "one of the most significant hotel property sales to

come on the market in Killarney in recent years".

The International Hotel had been operated by the Coyne family for nearly 50 years. The hotel was originally purchased by the late Sean Coyne in 1976.

The family had modernised and expanded the business over the years. Facilities within the hotel include Hannigan’s Bar and Restaurant, along with meeting and event spaces.

The Coyne family stated earlier that the time was right to hand the hotel to new owners, saying they had "always seen ourselves as guardians of the International Hotel. Now is the time to pass it on so its heritage is protected and its future success is secured".

Secondary schools partner with Tidy Towns

Students from three local secondary schools, St Brendan's College, St Bridget's Secondary School, and Killarney Community College, are joining forces with the Killarney Tidy Town Committee, Kerry County Council, and the Meitheal group to focus on environmental projects.

The students recently gave impressive presentations detailing their efforts to actively promote biodiversity, tackle litter waste, and protect the environment.

Attending the presentations were members of the Tidy Towns Committee and Mayor of Killarney Councillor Martin Grady.

The students have conducted surveys to highlight the worst areas prone to litter and have carried out subsequent litter picking in those areas while also creating

public awareness.

Additionally, bird feeders have been made in woodwork classes and mounted within the school grounds.

One of the key strategies adopted by the schools to maintain and increase diversity has been the development and nurturing of garden areas within their grounds. These green spaces serve a vital role in supporting the local ecosystem, promoting student well-being, and empowering learners of all abilities.

Proposal to move Farranfore station closer to airport

A proposal to relocate the Farranfore Train Station closer to Kerry Airport to create an integrated transport hub is set to be discussed today at the Ordinary December Meeting of Kerry County Council.

Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae is bringing forward a motion requesting that the Council write to Irish Rail and the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding the plan.

The motion asks that a "comprehensive masterplan be developed for a new integrated Transport Hub in Farranfore." This plan should specifically examine the relocation of the existing train station "further along the existing rail line towards

Kerry Airport," with the aim of providing a direct pedestrian link to the terminal and developing an adjoining bus interchange. The goal of the proposal is to establish a pilot project that demonstrates how rail, air, and road transport can be fully integrated in a rural regional setting. Cllr

Healy-Rae argues that this would "enhance accessibility, increase public transport connectivity, and strengthen Kerry’s strategic transport infrastructure."

St. Oliver's NS pupils become French speakers

Pupils at St Oliver’s National School are now speaking French thanks to a successful ten-week language module delivered by French For All Killarney School of French.

The intensive module, which focused on the inclusion and pro-active learning of French, concluded with a celebratory and festive event for the three fifth classes.

Course Director and native French teacher Hélène Olivier-Courtney marked the final day with a selection of French food, including macarons, homemade crêpes, croissants, pains au chocolat, and baguettes. The food added a real French touch to the celebrations for students interested in baking, football, fashion, and art.

The ten-week language module began in schools nationally in 2021 through applications to Post Primary Language Ireland (PPLI). The course aims to help children develop a love for French and language learning in general, giving them a valuable head start before sec-

ondary school. Activities included cultural projects, art projects reflecting the children's interests, songs, and games, making the language journey enjoyable and meaningful.

Hélène Olivier-Courtney extended a special thanks to principal Colm O'Suilleabhain and Deputy Principal Sandra Chute for welcoming French into the school this year. She also thanked all the teachers and SNAs for their continuous support.

Adult and secondary school students’ classes will resume on January 12.

Christmas Markets driven by founders' personal inspiration

Killarney Christmas Markets are in full swing at the Outlet Centre, running every Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm in the lead-up to Christmas, providing a vital platform for local makers and small businesses.

The market was co-founded by Killarney resident Claire Lyne and Laura Corlett.

Ms Lyne’s initial inspiration for the markets came after she began soap and candle making herself and realised there was nowhere locally for her to sell her products.

She and Ms. Corlett subsequently launched the venture together, with Ms Corlett handling marketing and Ms Lyne managing emails and vendor relations. The market has a strong personal connection for Ms Lyne, whose own business is named Solzie Skincare & Candles. She is a holistic therapist who loves natural and essential oils, she named her brand after her mother's nickname for her. She said that she learned everything

about skincare from her mother, who passed away in 1995, and wanted to keep her memory with her in her business.

The markets bring together a vibrant mix of local makers, artists, and crafters. Visitors can find a wide variety of stalls featuring handmade gifts, festive décor, natural skincare, jewellery, woodcraft, toys, and seasonal treats.

The organisers stated that their goal has always been "to support local businesses and create a space where the community can come together, shop local, and enjoy the magic of Christmas.Every purchase made at our markets directly supports a local family, a dream, or a small business trying to grow."

A winter ascent of the MacGillycuddy Reeks is always special

Killarney resident and experienced mountaineer Melissa Trant recently shared incredible photographs and her account of climbing the snow-capped MacGillycuddy Reeks, highlighting the unique experience of the mountain range during winter.

The MacGillycuddy Reeks at Christmas time offer a cure for whatever the heart needs, whether it is peace, relaxation, or reflection. Melissa described spending time there as magical at any point of the year, but particularly during the winter months when the mountains are covered in snow.

Climbing one of the winter routes on Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest moun-

tain, requires essential safety gear, including crampons, an ice axe, and a helmet, making the experience "incredibly exciting and fun."

Melissa said that she enjoys visiting the stunning peaks of the MacGillycuddy Reeks often because it is a place she can never get enough of. She finds that mountains make her feel alive, giving her joy, thrill, satisfaction, and peace. She added that the feeling of tranquility and calm on the mountains encompasses every ounce of her.

With Ireland's finest and highest mountain range on our doorstep in Killarney, Melissa said she feels blessed to be able to head up whenever the mountains are calling

New February event to replace Paps of Anú Winter walk

Organisers of the annual Winter Solstice Charity Walk on the Paps of Anú are considering replacing the traditional event with a new fixture in February, following years of poor weather causing disruption.

The annual walk was postponed for the

last two years due to extremely hazardous weather conditions.

As a result, organisers are now looking at establishing a potential alternative event to take place over the St Brigid’s bank holiday weekend in February for future years. The move would mark a shift away from the traditional December Winter Solstice date.

Chamber chief reflects on a hugely positive year

The President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has reflected on a very progressive and positive year in 2025 with many highlights that have helped maintain Killarney’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.

Johnny McGuire told the annual President’s Christmas Luncheon at the Killarney Park Hotel that a number of senior chamber members achieved great success throughout the year, including Patrick O’Donoghue of the Gleneagle Group

being named Kerry Business Leader of the Year, Pat O’Leary joining the board of Tourism Ireland and the town doing exceptionally well in both the national tidy towns competition and the Irish Business Against Litter League. He said Killarney could not achieve what it does without the wonderful contribution from volunteers, right throughout the community, including those who help out with tidy towns, the mountain meitheal and the numerous festivals, parades and events that the Chamber hosts every year.

Australia implements social media ban for U16s

Should Ireland follow suit and do the same?

Australia has introduced new legislation effectively banning social media use for children under the age of 16.

The new law came into effect during the week. Instagram, Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok and Reddit are among the platforms that have been banned. Prime Minister Antony Albanese hailed the move as “world-leading”. Companies that fail to take adequate steps preventing under-16s from accessing their platforms will face fines. There has been

a strong reaction to the ban on both sides. Youtube described the ban as “an extreme position” while Tiktok told its users the changes “may be upsetting”. Meta began removing under-16s in Australia last week ahead of the ban. It has now raised the question if other countries should follow suit. Minister for Communications Patrick O’Donovan said Ireland was not considering a similar ban right now. He confirmed that an age-verification system to prevent

Ireland survived Storm Bram away Home

Storm Bram came and went this this week, causing some destruction in different parts of the country.

Orange warnings were originally put in place for only a few counties, which included Kerry, however it was then extended to the entire country. Met Éireann warned motorists to be careful while driving and to stay away from coastal areas. Flights in and out of Dublin Airport and Shannon were cancelled throughout the day, while Waterford train station was forced to close for over

three hours due to flooding. Ferry sailings were also affected due to the storm. Fallen trees led to train delays across the country. A tree fell in Banteer which caused delays to the Mallow-Tralee route. Trains also operated at reduced speeds on many routes for safety reasons. Videos on social media showed strong winds in coastal areas, including parts of Waterford. Over 25,000 people lost power during the storm with ESB crews working around the clock to restore electricity. Winds reached 113km/h at Roches Point in Cork. Overall, the impact of Storm Bram was minimal.

children from accessing inappropriate content online has been discussed at Cabinet level. The world will be watching to see how the social media ban will play out. Reports in recent days suggest that some children are attempting to bypass the ban by submitting fake IDs. It has been argued that it might cause more harm than good. At the moment, it remains to be seen if the ban will work and if in time, other countries will adopt similar measures.

UHK implement visitor restrictions

University Hospital Kerry has implemented visitor restrictions amid a surge of flu illnesses. UHK has confirmed that the following rules will now apply for people visiting the hospital.

There will be one visitor per patient, and visitors are to wear surgical masks. Visiting times will be strictly enforced. UHK has extended their appreciation to the public for helping with these measures, which they say will help stop the rapid

spread of flu. Hospitals in Dublin, the Midlands, Galway, Wexford and Cork have also introduced similar measures.

On Thursday, December 11 there were 482 patients waiting for a bed in hospitals nationwide. Cork University Hospital had the highest number of patients waiting, with 44 patients on trollies. In Limerick there were 22 patients waiting for a bed. UHK had one of the lowest with 3 on trollies. It comes as the HSE has warned of an early and difficult flu season ahead.

Kelleher elected first chair of new Kerry Community Safety Partnership

A Killarney Municipal District councillor has been elected as the first chair of the newly-formed Kerry Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP).

The inaugural meeting of the LCSP took place last week at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre. The new body replaces the former Joint Policing Committees and is being rolled out nationwide.

The partnership is designed to give local residents a stronger voice in identifying and addressing community safety issues. It brings together councillors, Council management, An Garda Síochána, community and resident representatives, business and education representatives, and statutory agencies including the HSE and Túsla.

At the first meeting, Cllr Niall Kelleher was elected chairperson, with Derry Ó Murchú from Dingle elected vice-chair. Cllr Kelleher said the new structure will allow a more coordinated approach to

safety issues across the county.

“The future of community safety in Kerry starts with all of us working as one,” he said. “A shared approach to problem-solving can ensure that potentially harmful situations do not develop. Interventions should be delivered proactively and in a joined-up way with other services.”

Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan welcomed the establishment of the partnership, calling it an important step in the Government’s new approach to community safety.

The next task for the Kerry LCSP will be to develop its own local community safety plan, supported by the National Office of Community Safety.

Since hip-hop group Kneecap last played in Killarney, so much has changed for the band.

The trio experienced an explosion in popularity at the back end of last year due to the release of their album Fine Art in June, and then of their semi-fictionalised and self-titled biopic in August. The award-winning movie detailed the beginning of their music careers and their rise to prominence, with both album and movie receiving overwhelmingly high acclaim. Just one month after Kneecap last played in the INEC the group won a legal case against then business secretary and now Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch after she blocked an arts grant of £14,250 or €16,000 for the band. She cited anti-British politics as the reason. Kneecap claimed the denial of the grant was an “attack on artistic culture, and an attack on the Good Friday Agreement itself”. At a hearing in Belfast’s High Court the withholding of funds was deemed “unlawful and procedurally unfair.” Kneecap donated the grant to two Belfast youth clubs. These events are significant milestones in helping Kneecap to achieve notoriety. The band was cast further into the spotlight during the US music festival Coachella in April of this year. As Kneecap performed in front of the raucous American crowd, the jumbotron behind the band read “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people” before switching to a new message, “It is being enabled by the US government who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes”. There were cries of outrage because of the stand made by Kneecap that night. Their American booking agent dropped them, and their visas were rendered invalid. It was just one month after this

Belfast rap trio Kneecap to play two gigs in INEC this weekend

The rise and success of Ireland’s favourite Irish language group

when one of Kneecap’s members Mo Chara found himself being charged with a terror offence. He was alleged to have showed support for Hamas and Hezbollah during a show in London in November of 2024. Hamas and Hezbollah are deemed proscribed terror organisations by the British state, which means vocalising support for them is il-

legal. Although Mo Chara’s case would eventually be dropped in September, it still meant Kneecap would be subject to a three-year ban from Hungary directly before their scheduled performance in the Sziget Festival in Budapest. Hungary was not the only nation Kneecap would be barred from performing in. In September the trio was banned from

entering Canada ahead of four shows set to be played in Vancouver and Toronto, with Canadian officials citing Mo Chara’s terror charge. Canadian MP Vince Gasparro stated the group has “amplified political violence and publicly displayed support for terrorist organisations.” Kneecap has since taken legal action against Gasparro regarding his defamatory comments.

As Kneecap return to Killarney to play two gigs this weekend and the scramble for tickets comes to a close, it makes you wonder how any of this ever came to fruition. Just a few short years ago, the idea of an Irish language rap group making headlines and playing sold out shows globally would have been deemed utterly absurd and completely unrealistic. This seemingly impossible achievement shows how there is a desire amongst young Irish people to have a language and culture of their own, and how our language can be more than a just a mistaught school subject. It is vital that more creatives like Kneecap continue to be supported if we want our language to survive. A language learner can only feel passionate about learning if the content of what they are learning about is relatable. This is the reason that a hip-hop trio from Belfast has done more to motivate young Irish people in just the last few years to speak their own language than the government ever has.

Local causes benefit from Kerry Bikers’ Annual Christmas Road Run

Kerry Bikers held their Annual Christmas Run on Sunday last, successfully raising vital funds for two local causes: St Mary of the Angels and the Baile Mhuire Centre.

The festive motorcycle run began at the Corrib Station in Tralee at 11:30am and finished at Sheehans Petrol Station in Killarney around 12:15 pm.

Participants were encouraged to dec-

orate both themselves and their bikes, with prizes awarded for the best-decorated bike.

Following the main run, some of the group members joined the Christmas Santa parade in Tralee later that evening.

The organisers issued a thank you to everyone who joined and donated and they planning for the group's Easter run is now underway.

Duggan crowned County Rally Champion

Rob Duggan has been confirmed as the 2025 Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Champion after a close season ended with the Killarney Historic Rally.

His third place finish last weekend proved decisive when final points and tie-break rules were applied. Duggan and Colin O’Donoghue finished level on 31 points, but Duggan’s two class wins on the Rally of the Lakes gave him the edge under the championship regulations.

Championship sponsor Mike Moriarty said the rules worked exactly as intended. “When drivers finish level, the fair-

est way is to look at class wins over the counting rounds,” he said. “Rob had two on the Lakes, Colin had one in the Historic Rally, so the title goes Rob’s way. It’s a clean and straightforward system and it delivered the right result after a very competitive year.”

O’Donoghue pushed hard all season, winning the modified section of the Historic Rally and finishing second on both days of the Rally of the Lakes, but the tie-break meant he had to settle for runner-up. Third place overall goes to Alan Ring, whose class win on the Sunday of the Rally of the Lakes, combined with a second place the previous day, gave him 22 points.

The co-drivers’ title goes to Kieran O’Donoghue, who ends the year on 32 points after two second-place finishes and a win alongside Colin O’Donoghue. Ger Conway finished close behind on 29 points after scoring strongly with Welsh driver Meirion Evans on both Lakes days and adding a third place with Duggan in the Historic Rally. Noel O’Sullivan takes the bronze medal thanks to his Sunday class win on the Rally of the Lakes.

In the Historic category, Fergus O’Meara takes the title after steady scoring throughout the season. The Ladies’ award goes to Michelle Hickey, the only female competitor to contest three rounds as required under championship

rules, competing alongside her father John on the Circuit of Kerry and both days of the Rally of the Lakes.

The Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship remains the only county rally championship in Ireland. It is open to members of both Kerry Motor Club and Killarney and District Motor Club who live within the county. The championship name honours the Kingdom of Kerry Motor Club, the first motor club in the county in the 1950s and 60s.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented at the prizegiving on December 20 at The Anvil Bar, Keel, the halfway point between both clubs.

New legislation for learner drivers to sit test within the first four years

Minister of State with responsibility for Road Safety, Seán Canney, has signed regulations to ensure learner drivers can no longer repeatedly renew their learner permits without taking a driving test.

Learner drivers who have held a permit in category A, A1, A2, AM, B or W for four years will have to take a practical driving test before renewing their permit. Currently, learners can renew their permits multiple times if they have booked or scheduled a driving test.

In addition, learners who have held a learner permit for seven years will have to begin the learning to drive process again. For learners in category B (car), this process is made up of a theory test, obtaining a learner permit, taking 12 Essential Driver Training lessons, and sitting

a practical test.

Data from the Road Safety Authority shows that nearly one in five holders of category B learner permits have renewed their licences three or more times. Almost 60% of this group have yet to sit a driving test, approximately 38,000 people.

The new regulations amend the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations (S.I. 537 of 2006).

They will come into effect on 1 November 2026.

A Headford native and local Chartered Architectural Technologist, Michael O’Keeffe, played a key role in bringing the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) AGM and 60th Anniversary celebrations to Dublin recently.

Michael, who runs healycornelius design ltd. in Deerpark, Killarney, led the threeyear effort that secured the international event for Ireland.

More than 250 delegates from across the globe attended the AGM and anniversary celebrations. The bid to host the milestone gathering began when Fáilte Ireland contacted Michael over three years

ago during his term as Executive Board Trustee and Chair of CIAT Republic of Ireland. He immediately saw an opportunity for Ireland.

“While hailing from Headford, Killarney, I have been fully invested in my professional institute since joining in 2014 and, with the support of Fáilte Ireland and my Committee colleagues, was thrilled to bring its AGM and 60th Anniversary to

Ireland,” he said.

The successful bid followed a competitive process supported by Fáilte Ireland’s Business Events team. Dublin’s connectivity, capacity and cultural offering helped secure the event, which included student presentations at Technological University Dublin, a charity fundraiser at the Mont Hotel which raised over €1,500, the AGM at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel,

and a gala celebration in the Round Room at the Mansion House.

Reflecting on the weekend, Michael said: “As Chair, it was an honour to help bring my professional institute’s 60th Anniversary Celebration to Dublin. The support from all involved was incredible. To see delegates from around the world enjoying our hospitality made all the work worthwhile.”

How has the local market performed in 2025?

Nationally list prices rose by just short of 6% in the year to September, resulting in listed prices now being 39% above pre covid levels.

Early figures suggest transaction prices nationally rose by 7.8% between Q3 2024 and Q3 2025

The median price of a new build home in Co Kerry was €498,000 Market Heat, the difference between listed prices and transaction prices had grown sharply since 2023, reported at +8.4% in Munster, and regularly in excess of this in Killarney. Supply continues to be an issue with less

than 2,500 homes available in the market for sale in Munster in September, largely unchanged from 12 months previously.

The volume of second-hand homes traded was 4.2% lower than a year previously, however, transactions of new homes continue to rise, up 14% year-on-year, with activity in Q2 over twice the level seen in 2021.

It has been another busy year here at DNG Ted Healy, one which saw us release three new developments. Cloverfield, Muckross Rd (Phase 1 sold out, phase 2 coming soon), The Inches (only 3 left) and Laurel Ave, Milltown (last 2 remaining). The sale of 2nd hand homes continues a

pace with record prices being achieved in record time, with many sales agreeing within the first 10 days.

The year culminated when we were acknowledged at our annual DNG Awards and social event in The Curragh Racecourse as the DNG Brach Office of the Year for the Southwest, always a great honour and achievement to be recognised by our peers in the profession. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Gift vouchers T&C

Christmas is a time when many of us buy gift vouchers as a present for friends and family. There are many benefits to gift vouchers but there are also some risks, for example, if you lose the voucher, it expires before you use it, or if you’re unable to spend the remaining balance. It is important you know the conditions and rules that apply before buying a gift voucher.

The following are some common queries that the Citizens Information Service receive in relation to gift vouchers:

What is a gift voucher?

Gift vouchers are any voucher, coupon or other document (including an electronic document) that can be used instead of money to pay (or pay in part) for goods and services. Gift vouchers come in different forms, such as paper gift certificates, electronic cards or gift cards. They can be issued by a single business or for a group of shops (such as a shopping centre).

When you buy a gift voucher, you enter into a contract with the trader. The voucher is like cash that you hand over in exchange for goods and services.

What are the current rules that apply to Gift vouchers?

Gift vouchers sold after 2 December 2019 must have no expiry date or be valid for at least 5 years.

The seller cannot force you to use the entire gift voucher in one go or charge a fee for changing the name on a gift voucher (if name registration is required). If there is more than €1 left on your gift voucher after a purchase, the seller must refund you the balance. They can do this with cash, transfer it electronically to your bank or by giving you another gift voucher.

Are there any exceptions to the rules? The rules do not cover vouchers that:

• Can only be used to buy goods and services at a discounted price, from a specific seller on a set date, or for 3 months or less (such as deal websites like Groupon or Pigsback)

• Are part of a customer loyalty or promotion scheme

• You got as a refund for returned goods

• Were sold before 2 December 2019the original expiry date and terms still apply to these vouchers

What is an electronic money gift card?

In general, electronic money gift cards (for example, One4all gift cards), are cards that can be used in a number of different shops.

The following rules apply to electronic money gift cards:

• Before you buy the card, you must be told about the conditions for using the e-money card, including any fees

• Fees must be proportionate and in line with the costs actually incurred by the

business who issues the card to you

Is there an expiry dates on gift vouchers?

There is a 5-year minimum expiry date for all vouchers sold after 2 December 2019.

Gift vouchers must either:

• Have no expiry date, or

• Must be valid for at least 5 years from the date the gift voucher is issued. You must be given details of the expiry date in a durable format (for example, on paper or by email) at the time you buy the gift voucher. The legislation does not apply to gift vouchers bought before 2 December 2019.

What are my rights if I lose a gift voucher?

Gift vouchers are like cash, so if you lose it, the seller does not have to replace it. If a voucher was made out to you personally and is not transferable, you might get a replacement. This depends on the voucher’s terms and conditions and the company’s policy. For lost cards, you may have the option to get a replacement card but you need to check with the seller. You could be charged a fee for the replacement card. What happens if a trader goes out of business?

If a company goes out of business before you use the voucher, you may have difficulty getting your money back.

Usually, the seller will owe money to several people so your claim is just one of many. There are rules for the priority to be given to the various debts owed in the case of the business going into liquidation or receivership. Generally, you will be low in the order of priority. You will need to make a claim in writing to the appointed administrator or liquidator (if applicable) providing proof of your voucher. However, it is unlikely your voucher will be honoured. If a new owner takes over, they do not have to honour your voucher.

For this reason, you should buy gift vouchers using a credit or debit card, as you may be able to use chargeback through your bank or credit card provider. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has more information on companies going out of business on www.ccpc.ie

Where can I get more help?

If a trader refuses to honour a gift card, first try to settle the dispute directly with the trader.

If you cannot resolve the dispute, contact your local Citizens Information Service and they will advise you about your options for redress.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission also has information on their website: www.ccpc.ie. Their helpline number is 01 402 5555

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO FOR SUCCESS IN EXAMINATIONS

St. Theresa the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from thy heavenly gardens and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to please grant me the favour I thee implore and tell him I will love him each day more and more. Amen.

First Prayer: O Great St. Joseph of Cupertino who while on earth did obtain from God the grace to be asked at your examination only the questions you knew, obtain for me a like favour in the examinations for which I am now preparing. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked. Through Christ our Lord. St. Joseph of Cupertino, Pray for us. Amen. MOD

DINGLE DELIGHT

Munster titles for all three Kerry clubs as An Ghaeltacht and Ballymac also prevail

Congratulations to Daingean Uí Chúis, An Ghaeltacht and Ballymacelligott who made a clean sweep in the Munster Club football finals last weekend. It was glory all the way for the Kingdom in these Kerry versus Cork encounters.

DINGLE 1-18

ST FINBARR’S 0-20

Hard luck on The Barrs who controlled this thrilling Munster Senior Club final in Thurles until the dying seconds only for Dingle to claim it at the death. Dingle kept reducing the deficit as it went into four minutes overtime and the Barr’s still had two chances of scores. Then the unbelievable happened. With the clock at 63:44, after so many past defeats, was this about to be another nail in Dingle's coffin?

The Barrs claimed a turnover in their own half of the field and powerful midfielder Ian Maguire was in control as Dingle crowded in on him. Was he fouled? The referee saw it differently and blew for overholding. Still, there was no way that Dingle could score from that distance, but the hand-theball-back rule kicked in. It seemed that one of the Barrs men was handing it back when he was tackled but Clare referee Chris Maguire felt that it was a delaying tactic by the Barrs. Lo and be-

hold the ball was advanced another 50 metres. Dingle needed a single point to draw level.

It was still a big ask of anyone to score a two-pointer. Enter the Geaneys. Which one had the steely resolve to make the unbelievable possible? Top scorer Paul, Conor, Dylan or even substitute Mikey? In the end, it was Conor who wrote his name into history by curling over a spectacular two-pointer. Victory for Daingean Uí Chúis as the Barrs somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It was a classic case of the paradoxical oxymoron and the apparent contradiction that the magnificent Steven Sherlock had scored an unbelievable 16 points, including six two-pointers, and still was on the losing side.

On two occasions in that second half, the Barrs led by seven points. The very impressive Brian Hayes made it 0-20 to 1-12 in the 49th minute but on this occasion Dingle’s luck and resolve were crucial.

SCENES OF JOY: Conor Geaney is mobbed by Dingle teammates after his match-winning two-pointer in the Munster final. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.
Conor Geaney wrote his name into the history books by curling over a spectacular match-winning two-pointer.

Two years ago, they were denied the Munster crown after a penalty shootout against Castlehaven. Last year Dr Crokes killed them off in the Kerry final with a three-goal spree in six minutes. And just a few weeks ago they were dead and buried by Stacks only for veteran Paul Geaney to deliver the Kerry title in the closing stages.

Poetic justice emerged in Thurles, and I was thrilled to see their good fortune.

The Michael O’Connor Memorial Cup is named after that wonderful GAA man, Michael Coiny O’Connor, late of Ross Road.

A special word of praise for bainisteoir Pádraig Corcoran – well-known in Killarney – for sticking with Dingle through all their woes.

In the recent series of demographic articles, I predicted that Dingle would drop to intermediate within a few short years. Sunday’s win will stall the inevitable for a year or two at most before they lose senior status. Idir an dá linn, congrats to Dingle. Enjoy the traditional celebration of the Wren on St Stephen’s Day.

AN GHAELTACHT 2-12 AGHABULLOGUE 1-8

Great local rivals An Ghaeltacht and Dingle both won their respective Munster Cups. In the Munster Intermediate Club final, An Ghaeltacht proved far too strong for Aghabullogue, the home club of Killarney’s hurler and footballer

Dan Kelleher.

This game at Rathkeale was even enough for the first half. All square at the interval (An Ghaeltacht 1-6 Aghabullogue 2-3). Aidan Walsh, the 35-yearold former Cork dual player, has been a great asset to the westerners and he gave a generous supply to the forwards as no fewer than seven of them got on the score sheet.

Next up is an All-Ireland semi-final against Kildare champions Sallins or Tubberclair of Westmeath.

Meanwhile, it was glory all the way for Ballymac at Mallow as they coasted to victory over Buttevant. They have had many disappointments in the past, but it all came good on Saturday last. The final score read Ballymacelligott 3-12 Buttevant 0-8.

DOMINANCE

It was so satisfying to see the Kerry dominance in the three grades of the Munster Cups. How will they fare in the respective All-Ireland bids? Kerry teams have had mixed successes down through the years. At Senior level, East Kerry, Castleisland Desmonds, Laune Rangers and Austin Stacks won the Andy Merrigan Cup once while Dr Crokes won two All-Ireland club titles in 1992 and 2017. Six titles in all for Kerry, a poor return when one considers our intercounty successes.

In the 23 years of the Junior All-Ireland series, Kerry clubs have won it 20 times, while at Intermediate level Kerry clubs have won it 17 times in 19 years. Little wonder that Cork clubs are so annoyed with the distinct advantage Kerry clubs have due to the grading process in Kerry.

EAST KERRY BOARD

The 2025 East Kerry Board competitions came to a close last weekend with Listry claiming the East Kerry Minor Division 2 Championship by easily defeating Spa 3-13 to 0-6.

Listry were on top throughout, leading 2-7 to 0-1 at half time. Spa tried hard in the second half but Listry stayed well clear to the finish to wrap up a good season for the club.

Legion coaches complete historic coaching project

Ten coaches from Killarney GAA Club recently spent time in Lanzarote, Spain where they learned from professional coaches and instructors at the Club La Santa sports resort.

They were participating in the Erasmus+ Sports Mobility project as part of an initiative which was launched in February by Seán Kelly MEP, club executive members and the Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP).

This was the first time a GAA club availed of Sports Mobility Erasmus+ funding

with an application made to the National Agency, Léargas, with the facilitation of KRSP, back in October 2024. The Legion project was titled “Multisport Coach Shadowing for Multi-age Fitness & Conditioning” and saw the club’s coaches learn by observation and participation in activities delivered by Club La Santa sports coaches in a wide range of activities, including athletics techniques, functional movement, Hyrox, Crossfit, TRX, circuit training, Fitball, hill reps (V02), stretching and recovery, and nutrition programmes. Coaches were also encouraged to shad-

ow some non-transferrable coached activities which would allow them to focus on how the professionals prepared, communicated and managed delivery. The Legion coaches maintained an online journal to record their observations and learning and to upload media. The club and KRSP will issue certificates to reflect their learning experiences in the project. Feedback from all the participants has been exceptionally positive. Legion will be organising some coaching workshops during the winter where participants will have an opportunity to share their takeaways from the project. The club will host

a Léargas Sports Mobility workshop in January 2026 for any sports club considering a sports mobility project for 2026. The next Erasmus+ funding call deadline is in February 2026.

In its final project report, the club has called upon the EU and Léargas to expand the Erasmus+ Sports Mobility programmes to help grassroots clubs tackle the challenges of coach recruitment, retention and development. The club is also happy to share experiences to assist other Kerry clubs to get involved in Erasmus+ projects through Kerry GAA networks or via the KRSP.

Legion’s Project Lead, minor coach and club Vice-Chairman Brian Looney thanked Léargas for the project support, Club La Santa’s Sports Director Michael Møller and his Green Team coaches for their generous guidance, and KRSP and co-ordinator Gearóid O’Doherty for their facilitation.

NATIONAL CUP QUARTER-FINAL

Templeogue 95 | St Paul’s Lakers 84

TALLAGHT

Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers exited the National Cup at the quarter-final stage last Saturday as they came up short against Templeogue in Tallaght.

The Lakers started well with Sam Grant and Steve Kelly leading the way. The sides were all square at the end of the first quarter (26-26) and the Lakers edged into the lead before the half-time interval, doubling their tally to make it 52 to 50.

After that tight first half, the physically imposing Dubliners charged ahead in the third quarter, outscoring their Kerry counterparts by 10 points (28-18) to open up a commanding eight-point advantage.

In the fourth quarter, early baskets by

Evan Cook widened the gap to 12. At the other end, the Lakers were unable to make the most of their chances as the minutes ticked away. They did cut the deficit to single digits via Steve Kelly but Templeogue finished strongly to claim an 11-point win. Final score: Templeogue 95 St Paul’s Lakers 84.

Next up for Luke O’Hea’s side is another road trip to the capital as they return to National League Division 1 action against Moy Tolka Rovers on Saturday. Tolka are currently just ahead of the Lakers having won six of their nine games to date. The Killarney club currently hold a record of 5-4 with the win column looking healthier after a slow start to the 2025/26 campaign. Tip-off in Dublin is at 7.30pm.

After this weekend, fixtures against Galway teams await with home game against Maree on December 20 preceding away ties versus Moycullen (December 27) and the Titans (January 10).

LAKERS SCORERS: Sam Grant 30, Steve

Swimming club stage milestone gala

Killarney Swimming Club held its inaugural internal gala on Saturday, December 6, marking an exciting milestone for the club.

The event provided swimmers with valuable experience competing under full gala conditions in their home pool, while also giving parents the opportunity to learn and practise essential gala duty roles.

Swimmers each competed in two events. The Senior Elite and Competitive squads swam 200 IM and 100 Freestyle, while the Junior and Development squads swam 100 IM and 50 Freestyle The evening saw excellent performances across all squads, with several athletes setting new Killarney Swimming Club

records. These record-setting swims now establish official benchmarks for future club competitions.

The gala showcased strong skills, team spirit and great determination from all involved. For some swimmers, it was their first time racing; for others, an important opportunity to measure progress at this point in the season.

Killarney SC extends its thanks to the coaching team, parents and volunteers whose support made the event possible.

A special word of thanks to Tim and Mike from Kingdom Swimming Club for their invaluable help with set-up and throughout the evening.

The club looks forward to building on this success in future internal galas and upcoming meets.

Provinces not at their best

After last weekend’s performances by the Irish rugby clubs in Europe, it looks like Michael O’Leary of Ryanair won’t need to triple the price of flights to Bilbao for the European finals in May next year.

Racing of France, not fancying their chances, sent a young third team to Ravenhill. A full Ulster side were seven points down within five minutes before eventually plodding their way to a second half victory over the Parisians. In Dublin, Leinster played a weakened Harlequins team full of academy tyros, but the Englishmen still scored four tries. Leinster eventually overwhelmed them but Quins left with a bonus point after puncturing Leinster’s much-vaunted defensive system. Leinster fielded a team of full internationals, including seven Lions, one current All Back and one Springbok, yet still struggled.

Over in the Rectory in the city of Bath, Munster fought to the end and despite losing and conceding 40 points, they died with their boots on. They did not have the artillery up front and were eventually overwhelmed by Van Graan’s superior outfit who will be real contenders to reach Bilbao. Munster’s weak point, as

Healy’s Kerry squad taking shape for 2026

Kerry FC have already been busy during the off-season. Here’s how Colin Healy’s squad is shaping up so far ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Since the 2025 season ended, seven players have been confirmed to have departed the club: Daniel O’Connor, Carl Mujaguzi, Tim-Oliver Hiemer, Kevin Williams, Kennedy Amechi, Chris McQueen and Ronan Teahan.

Homegrown star Teahan has left the Kingdom to join promoted Premier Division outfit Dundalk. The talented midfielder will be a loss; he grabbed five goals and four assists for Kerry in 2025 and before departing he was presented with the Fans’ Player of the Year award at the club’s celebration night.

The following squad members will be staying at Mounthawk Park: Luke Palmer, Killarney native Luke Doolan, Finn Barrett, Seán McGrath, Seán O’Connell, Samuel Aladesanusi, Cian Brosnan and Niall Brookwell. Mid-season signings from last season Matthew Connor, Arran Healy and Ewan Lee have also agreed to stay.

It is still unknown whether Oran Crowe, Joe Adams or Daniel Okuwte will be re-signing.

The marquee re-signing for Colin Healy’s squad is striker Ryan Kelliher.

ever, is the underpowered pack. What’s up with Connacht, the biggest disappointment of the weekend? They utterly dominated Ospreys for 35 minutes, scoring 21 points and winning four scrum penalties. Then they totally lost focus and conceded 24 points to a dreadful Ospreys outfit, ending up with a pitiful single loser’s point.

This weekend Leinster play Leicester on Friday, and on Saturday Munster host Gloucester, Ulster travel to Cardiff, and Connacht play Georgian side Black Lion. Anything less than three Irish wins will be disappointing.

The former Killarney Celtic man had interest from other clubs but has opted to keep playing in his home county, having missed most of last season through a cruciate ligament injury.

Kerry’s first new signing of the window was Finnish defender Jonas Häkkinen from Cobh Ramblers. A former Finland U21 international, Häkkinen made 32 appearances last season at centre back and right back and has over 100 League of Ireland appearances to his name, including 17 in the Premier Division with Cork City.

The club’s second addition was Cobh Ramblers player Cian Murphy. The Tipperary native led the line for Cobh last year, contributing 10 goals and five assists in 34 league matches.

Kerry then made a major statement with the signing of Vincent Borden from Galway United. The 26-year-old American, who was not offered a new deal by Galway, featured 25 times in the Premier Division last season, netting three goals.

The latest signing is Dublin native Harry Halwax, formerly the first-choice keeper for Longford town who finished 12 points ahead of Kerry in the First Division this past season.

Newcomer Halwax will be in competition for the number one jersey with academy goalkeeper Darragh Foley and Matthew Connor.

KDL PREMIER A: Killarney Athletic 5 - 1 Ballyheigue Terry Sparling x 2 Jack Cooper x1 Matthew Horgan x 1Donie Kelliher x1.

U14 NATIONAL TROPHY: Killarney Athletic A 5 - 1 Croom United Alan O'Donoghue x1 Sean Quill x 1 Miron Svyripa x 2 Lucas Uchytil x 1. The lads played their 3rd round match in the National Trophy today at home versus Croom Utd from Limerick. The boys played well in tough conditions on the pitch today. They controlled most of the first half and went in leading 2-0 from two well taken goals from Alan O’Donoghue and Sean Quill. The second half was much of the same with Athletic creating many chances. Miron Svyripa finished two well taken goals and Lucas Uchytil finished the game with a well taken header from Sean Quills corner to finish the game with a well-deserved 5-1 victory. Thanks to the ref and Croom Utd for a very sporting game. Man of the match for Athletic was Miron Svyripa with two goals as he led the line well from the front for the lads. Well done boys!

U13: The lads hit the road early for a big National Trophy clash in Charleville, and they were met with a tough, zippy surface that made every touch and tackle feel like hard work. But Athletic settled brilliantly and struck first – a lovely move finished off by Darragh O’Toole, putting us 1–0 up and full of confidence. Charleville, to their credit, battled back strongly and managed to grab two goals before half-time, piling the pressure on our boys and setting up a serious challenge for the second half. But this group battled and with fresh legs coming off the bench and a real spark of energy throughout the team, Athletic pushed higher, pressed harder, and completely flipped the momentum. The comeback was on. Two rapid-fire goals turned the game on its

head – a cool finish from Rian O’Reilly and a sharp strike from William S put Athletic 3–2 up and in full control heading into the final stages. The lads showed real heart, composure, and togetherness to see it out for a brilliant away victory on Cork soil. A big thank you to Charleville, who gave everything in a sporting contest, to the referee for handling the game well, and to all the travelling parents and supporters who made the trip and backed the boys all the way. Athletic march on!

BOYS U12 DIVISION 3: Killarney Celtic D 0 - 6 Killarney Athletic D. Goalscorers: Ollie Pyne x 5 Marc Moynihan x 1. A great effort all round by our young blues this morning as they came away with the 3 points. Very impressed with how they approached the game today, positive, worked for each other & always looking to make the right decisions. Super work lads! MOTM - Ollie Pyne.
