Mayor Martin Grady’s Christmas message As Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District, I would like to extend my warmest Christmas wishes to all the people in our community.

As we near the end of another year, it’s time to look back on the stories that shaped and connected our closeknit community here in Killarney. It was a year of ups and downs. The town experienced moments of celebration and tragedy. Many fantastic events took place, including Wander Wild and the Rewild festival. Staple events, such as St Patrick’s Day and the Rally of the Lakes also made their annual return. However, the year also brought challenges for businesses who closed and the housing crisis which continues to worsen every day.

2025 started off as a winter wonderland, Killarney glistened in the winter snow. Children built snowmen, families had fun and a lot of craic was had.

We received several photos of people in Killarney enjoying the snow.

Killarney Musical Society enjoyed a successful production of Evita at the Gleneagle Arena in March. Large crowds attended three shows and the children’s matinee.

In April, Killarney paid tribute to former president Mary Robinson, who was honoured at St. Brendan’s College during its annual entertainment event.

Penney’s underwent a makeover after a €3.5-million investment, with a new layout and design for shoppers.

The team here at the Killarney Advertiser ran a hugely successful Family Fun Day which was held at the Racecourse. It was a fantastic day for all of the family, and it wouldn’t have been possible without all of the incredible support given by the community and our contributors. A whopping sum of €1,896 was raised for Autism Friendly Killarney on the day.

Frank Coffey announced he was shutting up shop after 35 years of business in the town while Ronan Keating

made a special appearance in Killarney donning the Dr. Crokes jersey!

Construction has begun on Park Road which has caused some controversy around the town and shovels are on the ground for the long awaited Farranfore bypass with €5m in funding announced for the highly anticipated project.

The housing crisis is still looming large in Killarney. Shortages of houses and high rents are rising at a rapid rate.

Families in the Loreto Convent estate face homelessness next year with eviction notices having been served, and the families have nowhere to go.

2025 was also a year of sadness in Killarney. The community was deeply affected by the tragic loss of 17-year-old Isabelle O’Callaghan in a horse-riding accident, the sudden death of Ring of Kerry founder Paddy O’Donoghue who died tragically while cycling and Paudie O’Rahilly who drowned in the River Flesk. We also lost pillars of the community in Dermot Galvin, Paudie O’Callaghan, Seamus Kiely, Con O’Leary, Patricia Keane O’Connor and Johnny Culloty, all of whom were well known and deeply respected. To those of you missing a loved one this Christmas, we are thinking of you and extend our deepest condolences.

Our 2025 Christmas colouring competition marks the end of another successful year We would like to say a big thank you to all of the schools and students that participated in our annual Christmas colouring competition this year. We received so many creative drawings from many talented young artists in Killarney and the surrounding areas. It was very difficult to choose a winner, even to narrow it down to the top 25 was a difficult task. However, we were thrilled to announce Natalia Klimaszewska, a third-class student at Holy Cross Mercy School in Killarney, as the winner of our 2025 colouring competition at the Killarney Advertiser. Her beautiful drawing of Santa and his reindeer was so creative and detailed. It immediately drew us in. We are honoured to showcase her artwork as the cover of our Christmas edition. Congratulations Natalia, you are a very talented young artist.

Final weekend push for local shopping in town centre Killarney Town Retailers Association (KTRA) has issued a final call to the public to support local businesses this weekend, with only a few shopping days remaining before Christmas.

The association is emphasising the longterm impact that choosing to shop local has within the town centre over other alternatives has on the local community.

Our long-standing businesses are the fabric of our town and are what make Killarney unique so by spending locally, residents ensure that money remains circulating within Killarney, directly supporting local jobs.

“When you shop local, your money stays local, supporting your neighbours, friends, and families,” said a KTRA

spokesperson.

Beyond the economic benefits, the association highlighted that local shops are the first to provide sponsorship for community events, charity fundraisers, and local sports clubs.

“These businesses are never found wanting when it comes to backing projects,” added the spokesperson. “When they thrive, so does our town.”

William Sheahan, Chairperson of the Killarney Town Retail Association (KTRA), encouraged shoppers to utilise the Kerry

County Council free parking initiatives over the coming days and explore the wide range of specialised services available on their doorstep some of which have online options such as click and collect or local home delivery.

“Hopefully, through this campaign, we can remind people of all that is good about our town centre shops,” Mr. Sheahan said. “From butchers to footwear, and fashion to fragrances, our town centre has a huge amount to offer both locals and tourists alike.”

Residents are encouraged to make an impact this weekend by visiting the town’s independent retailers for their final Christmas purchases.

Tributes paid as Den Joe’s co-founder and basketball stalwart is laid to rest There has been widespread shock and sadness across the Killarney and Castleisland areas this week following the passing of Patricia (Pat) Keane O’Connor.

A well-known businesswoman and community figure, Pat was laid to rest on Thursday morning following Requiem Mass at Castleisland Parish Church.

Pat, who was in her 70s, passed away on Sunday, December 14, at University Hospital Kerry. She had been in in-

tensive care following a single-vehicle collision on the N23 at Lisheenbaun on December 10.

To many in Killarney, Pat was a familiar and welcoming face as the co-founder of the popular Den Joe’s Family Restaurant.

Alongside Den Joe, she established the business in 1986, opening the original shop in Castleisland before expanding to New Street in Killarney.

Over the decades, she was known for

her kindness to customers and for providing many local young people with their first jobs.

Her impact on the local sporting community was equally significant. St Paul’s Basketball Club in Killarney paid a heartfelt tribute, describing her as a "wonderful supporter" and a "proud and generous sponsor over many years."

Pat is survived by her children Julette, Vincent, and Denis, their father Den Joe, and her six grandchildren.

St Francis Special School plans for expansion A planning application has been submitted to Kerry County Council for a significant development at St Francis Special School in Beaufort.

The proposal, which appeared in the council's planning list for the first week of December 2025, outlines a major expansion of the school’s current facilities on the St Mary of the Angels campus.

The project consists of five new classrooms and a range of specialist rooms designed to support pupils with moderate, severe, and profound learning disabilities. According to the development description, the new building will include a dedicated sensory room, a music room, a cookery room, and a withdrawal room.

The application follows an announcement made by Minister Norma Foley earlier this year, where initial project approval was granted for the school.

The school, which provides essential educational services for children aged 4 to 18, continues to be a central part of the Beaufort community.

The planning application is currently under consideration by Kerry County Council, with a decision expected in early 2026.

Return of Athletic Club's Couch to 5K challenge in January Killarney Valley AC has announced the return of its popular Couch to 5K initiative for January 2026.

The eight-week programme is designed as a safe and progressive way for participants to move from walking to jogging.

The club’s qualified coaching team is inviting people to sign up for the initiative.

Training sessions will take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the brightly lit Killarney Valley AC Arena. The club emphasizes a great atmosphere, with motivation, encouragement, and teamwork being key to participant success on the dark evenings.

Over a thousand people have completed the course since the track opened seven years ago. This year’s programme will culminate with a 5K Park Run at Killarney

House on March 5.

Proceeds from the initiative will be used by the volunteer-run club for track repairs, with a full refurbishment planned for the summer of 2026.

Killarney Valley AC currently has 500 members of all ages and capabilities. The club recently installed new pole vault equipment and now has 23 vaulters. A recent quiz held at The Laurels helped raise funds to purchase extra poles for the vaulting team.

Moglaí Bap boosts Killarney for Palestine street run A charity bake sale hosted by Killarney for Palestine was deemed a major success, with the event receiving an extra boost from the appearance of Moglaí Bap of the Belfast rap group Kneecap.

Moglaí Bap, who was in town for Kneecap's two sold-out concerts at the Gleneagle Arena last Friday and Saturday, led a promotional walk that concluded at the bake sale.

The coffee morning and bake sale took place in the lounge and interior kitchen

of the Blacksheep Hostel on New Street on Saturday. It was extended by an hour, running until 2:30 pm, to accommodate the arrival of the walk, which reached the hostel at approximately 1:50 pm. Kneecap is known to organise similar community runs or walks in every town and city where they perform.

Susan Larkin and Lisa O'Sullivan of Killarney for Palestine confirmed the success of the fundraiser. They noted that the appearance of Moglaí Bap "added an extra element of excitement to what was already a wonderful event".

It has been a particularly busy and a hugely progressive and positive year for Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in 2025 with many highlights that have helped maintain Killarney’s reputation as a great town to live in, a wonderful town to do business in and a fabulous town to visit.

A number of senior chamber members achieved great success throughout the year, including Patrick O’Donoghue of the Gleneagle Group being named Kerry Business Leader of the Year, Pat O’Leary, of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation and formerly of Liebherr Container Cranes, joining the board of Tourism Ireland and KWD Recycling winning a national environmental award for its waste recovery practices.

Killarney also performed exceptionally well in both the national tidy towns competition, winning a gold medal, and the Irish Business Against Litter League and Chamber played a very active part in both.

Killarney, of course, could not achieve what it does without the wonderful contribution of volunteers, right throughout the community, including those who help out with the numerous festivals, parades and events that chamber hosts every year.

Thanks are due also to tidy towns and the Mountain Meitheal volunteers who took to the woods to continue the fight against rhododendron – in association with the National Parks and Wildlife Service – an impressive 50 times this year.

In a new departure this year chamber published informative monthly newsletters for members to keep them fully briefed on events happening in Killarney, what the chamber has been doing and what is in the pipeline.

Con and Anne Stack, founders of Tricel, were the recipients of the 2025 Order of Inisfallen Award, which is organised by Chamber and Kerry County Council.

Active Chamber members, the Randles family of the Dromhall and Randles Ho-

tels, celebrated 60 years in business in the company of the Taoiseach.

Our big events, the St Patrick’s Festival, Wander Wild, the Celebration of Irish-American Friendship and, of course, Christmas in Killarney continue to grow and prosper and we thank all those involved for their hard work and dedication in ensuring they are such a big success.

This year the Chamber, in association with the Killarney Parish, chose to honour the memory of the late Donal Grady, a former Mayor of Killarney, by dedicating the star at the top of the Tree of Light on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral in his name and we would encourage every-

body to pay a visit, to remember Donal and to marvel at the magnificent spectacle that the Tree of Light actually is.

Towards the end of 2025, Chamber welcomed a new chamber vice president, Carol Dempsey and we all look forward to her input and to working closely with her on several projects as the new year unfolds.

It is important to acknowledge the long-serving co-president Padraig Treacy for his remarkable contribution to chamber and we are delighted to confirm that Padraig will remain on in the wings which is where he always likes to be.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce takes great heart from comments made by Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the Dromhall Hotel 60th celebrations when he described Killarney as being a great town for getting things done and just getting on with it and as a location that had tourism in its DNA. On the same day Chamber representatives had a private meeting with Mr Martin at which we lobbied him to introduce the long-promised latte levy so that the coffee cup initiative first introduced in Killarney can get a new lease of life and go on to thrive on a nationwide basis, just like the plastic bag levy introduced some years ago.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce wishes everybody in Killarney, our members, the local people visitors and those who are home for Christmas a very happy, peaceful and safe festive season and every blessing and good wish for the year ahead.

Oliver Hurley Killarney Musical Society (KMS) production team is deep into rehearsals for their upcoming show, 'All Shook Up,' which runs in the Gleneagle Arena from February 10 to 12.

The production team, led by Director Oliver Hurley, Musical Director Jimmy Brockie, Choreographer Justin Walsh, and Choral Director Sorcha O’Connor, spoke about the commitment shown by the cast.

ture. I am really amazed by the quality of singing because the harmonies are difficult. The harmonies especially really surprised me, how strong they are,” he said.

Musical Director Jimmy Brockie expressed his admiration for the community aspect. “I’m surprised to get so many new people this year, brand new talent and a lot of young people joining us again this year after not being a part of it for years and just the community aspect of this group,” Mr. Brockie stated.

Choreographer Justin Walsh was impressed by the cast’s attitude towards the demanding routines. “The level of 'can do' approach by the cast. This is a dance-heavy show and the speed at which the dance is presented is quite fast. I could tell KMS were not used to this level of speed but was highly impressed at their ability to challenge themselves in doing so! I’m really looking forward to when they get to showcase all their hard work and dedication

to this show,” Mr. Walsh commented.

Choral Director Sorcha O’Connor highlighted the work being done outside of the rehearsal hall. “How much work happened outside rehearsals—especially on their vocals. The chorus clearly practised their line tapes at home, in cars, in the shower because the improvement week to week has been unreal (and very impressive),” she said.

‘Old Shed Door’ photo wins Camera Club’s Unrestricted Competition Killarney Camera Club has announced the results for the Unrestricted Category of its monthly competition, which cantered on the theme of Texture.

Mr Desbrow captured his winning image unexpectedly just before demolishing an old shed at the bottom of his garden.

He was drawn to the shed's old timber

door, where an antique bolt provided the ideal subject, covered in dust, cobwebs, and years of weathering.

Award-winning photographer Vivian Buckley delivered this month’s critique, praising the winning shot for its quality.

Mr. Buckley noted that the final photo displayed incredible clarity, detail, and sharpness. He also highlighted the perfect lighting and reflection from an old mirror beneath the door, which captured "every grain of wood and every delicate thread of cobweb".

Car fire causes traffic disruption on Killarney–Farranfore road There was traffic disruption on the Killarney to Farranfore road on Tuesday evening after a car caught fire and was destroyed by flames.

The incident occurred on the Killarney side of Farranfore village, close to the turn-off for Ballyhar, at approximately 7.30pm. Emergency services were alerted after the vehicle burst into flames while on the roadway.

No injuries were reported. The car, believed to be a new Mercedes-Benz less than two weeks old, was extensively damaged in the fire.

Killarney Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and brought the blaze under control. The incident resulted in significant delays for motorists, with traffic affected in both directions for a period while the scene was dealt with.

Killarney Civic Arts Group holds first AGM Killarney Civic Arts Group held its first Annual General Meeting at the Dromhall Hotel last weekend, marking an important milestone for the newly formed organisation.

Brehon Hotel to open simulator experience for golf lovers

The group was established to promote cultural awareness and encourage participation in the arts in Killarney and the wider Munster region.

Members and supporters attended the meeting to discuss the group’s aims, future plans and the role of the arts in civic life. The AGM also provided an opportunity for artists and arts workers to share

ideas and experiences about cultural development in the town.

Cllr Marie Moloney attended the meeting and welcomed the initiative.

Those present included Ciara Ní Shúilleabháin, Joanne McCarthy, Paul Byrne, Tomás O’Sullivan, Eileen Sheehan, Longina Wentrys, Dolores Lyne and Tim O’Shea. The group thanked everyone who attended and expressed particular appreciation to the Randles family for their continued support of the arts.

Rare BBC footage shown at Hugh O’Flaherty exhibition Visitors to the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society Ordination Centenary Exhibition at Killarney Library are being given a unique opportunity to view rare historic footage linked to the Killarney priest’s life and legacy.

The exhibition was officially opened on Tuesday by the Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Martin Grady. Following the opening, attendees viewed the first public screening of a recreated 27 minute video featuring sound and images from the 1963 BBC programme This Is Your Life. The programme centres on Lt Col Sam Derry and includes a guest appearance by Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty.

The recreated video was produced by students of Kerry College Broadcast Production Skills under the guidance of their lecturer Brian Nolan. Exhibition organiser Jerry O’Grady said the society was

grateful to the students for their work in bringing the historic material to a wider audience.

Also screened was a short three minute video showing the liberation of Rome on June 4, 1944, including footage of Monsignor O’Flaherty meeting US General Mark Clark. The footage was provided by The Footage Farm.

The month long exhibition runs at Killarney Library during normal opening hours and marks the centenary of Monsignor O’Flaherty’s ordination in December 1925.

Two Killarney venues adopt new names Two of Killarney’s best-known venues have confirmed changes to their official names.

The venue formerly known as the INEC will now operate under the name Gleneagle Arena.

Meanwhile, Dr Crokes GAA Club has confirmed that its grounds have been formally renamed. Following discussion at the club’s recent AGM, the venue will now be known as Páirc Dr Crócaigh, also referred to as Dr Crokes’ Park.

Historian launches recordbreaking 2026 Calendar Local historian Damien Switzer has unveiled his 2026 Killarney Historical Calendar, a massive production containing close to 1,000 photographs of the town and its people.

Known to some locals as the “Jimmy McGee of Killarney” for his deep knowledge of the town’s heritage, Switzer has pushed the project to a scale never seen before.

The 2026 edition is double the size of last year's calendar, spanning 40 A3 pages. The sheer volume of images has led some to suggest it may hold a world record for a publication of its kind.

The calendar covers over a hundred years of local history, with images dating from the 1880s to the 1980s. It isn't just a collection of landmarks; it is a catalogue of the people who shaped the town.

From sports teams and school groups to shopfronts and quiet everyday moments, the faces of those who have passed sit alongside familiar locals still active in the community today.

“The reason I do this is to preserve the history of the town and its people,” Switzer said. “I didn’t want to leave anyone out.”

The calendar is currently on sale at a pop-up shop on New Street, located next to Sheahan’s Centra.

Damien is running the shop alongside his mother, Eileen, a well-known local figure whom Damien credits as a major inspiration.

With numbers limited this year and high interest following the success of the 2025 edition, locals are encouraged to visit the pop-up early to secure a copy before Christmas.

Switzer expressed his thanks to everyone who helped out, contributed photographs, and, in particular, businessman Pat Sheahan, who provided the distribution premises, and to the Casey family of KC Print for their support in producing the high-quality calendar.

While Switzer does not publicise his charitable work, the Killarney Advertiser learnt that the calendars were delivered to the Palliative Care Unit, local care homes, and hospitals.

A happy and a faith-centred Christmas to one and all, to all homes, all families and all people living alone. It is wonderful that Christmas in Ireland remains so family centred for most people: ‘Home for Christmas’, ‘Together for Christmas’.

For homes and families all year-round every week can be pressurized and busy, Christmas is almost the only time most

people are at home with their family, a few days to unwind and catch up, time to see the bigger picture of their lives and to count their blessings. I pray God’s blessing on every home in the diocese.

If it has been a difficult year or if you are troubled today draw strength from the fact that Mary and Joseph relied on the innkeeper, and all he could provide was a stable, and their baby Jesus was born.

What joy and happiness!

Everything does not have to be perfect for life to be fulfilling.

A word of encouragement. Have time to turn to God over the Christmas days.

Pause and gaze at the crib in the home, or at a simple crib-picture on a Christmas card. Visit the crib in local churches. Bring the children. Especially at the crib, talk to children about the birth of Jesus, and the love God the Father has for us all. Speak to children of the love of God, and of all of us putting our Hope in God. Join in the celebration of Mass. Proclaim Christ Jesus as your Hope as you enter the New Year. Share and nourish your own faith over the days of Christmas.

This Christmas we have a new Pope, Leo XIV. We pray for him and for his shepherding of the church in the years ahead.

Let us remember Pope Francis fondly.

Recall the heroic effort he made on Easter Sunday to show the world his faith and joy in the Resurrection of Jesus, and how

he died early the next morning.

2023 was the 800th anniversary of St Francis having the first Christmas crib in Greccio, Italy. In his crib St Francis had live people and animals, an event that is now seen as the beginning of the worldwide tradition of the crib, a model of the stable with figures of all the people, animals and objects. At the start of Advent 2019, looking forward to 2023 Pope Francis wrote an apostolic letter entitled “The meaning and importance of the nativity scene”.

What follows are two paragraphs, from the middle and the end of Pope Francis’ letter, two paragraphs that can help us reflect and pray about the birth of Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. __________________________________ “Why does the Christmas crib arouse such wonder and move us so deeply?

First, because it shows God’s tender love: the Creator of the universe lowered himself to take up our littleness. The gift of life, in all its mystery, becomes all the more wondrous as we realize that the Son of Mary is the source and sustenance of all life.

In Jesus, the Father has given us a brother who comes to seek us out whenever we are confused or lost, a loyal friend ever at our side. He gave us his Son who forgives us and frees us from our sins.”

Dr Crokes’ festive initiatives for the community Dr Crokes GAA Club, a recent Gold Award winner in the GAA Healthy Club Honours 2025-2027, has announced a detailed programme of community initiatives for the Christmas season.

The club continues to host Kathleen’s Gentle Mobility Exercises, a popular Age Action initiative led by retired PE teacher Kathleen Fitzgerald. The hour-long sessions, which cater to 40 adults every Tuesday, include music and social time with coffee and cake. While the winter programme concludes this week with a Christmas party, the spring sessions are scheduled to begin early in 2026.

Members of the Healthy Club committee are also carrying out visitations to all families in the community who were bereaved during 2025. During these visits, members deliver special Christmas cards and greetings designed by the club’s Juvenile Academy players.

The club is also maintaining its connection with the Crokes Diaspora by sending bespoke Christmas greeting cards to

members living or working abroad who cannot return home for the holidays.

This initiative allows local members to supply greetings to the Healthy Club to ensure personal links with home are reestablished.

The schedule of events concludes with the Lap of Light Celebration on Saturday, December 27. Families who suffered a bereavement in 2025 are invited to assemble at Dr Crokes' Park at 4:30 pm for a candlelight reflection with live music. This will be followed by laps of the grounds under the theme of "Darkness into Light," with participants encouraged to wear high-visibility clothing and club colours while using torches or mobile phones for illumination. The evening will finish with refreshments and music in the clubhouse

Gaelscoil Faithleann festive carol service

The Church of the Resurrection was filled with festive cheer as the pupils of Gaelscoil Faithleann gathered for their annual Christmas Carol service.

Approximately 240 children from the school participated in the service, which featured a Nativity and a selection of traditional carols. The performance focused on the true meaning of the Christmas season, with Rang 1 students re-enacting the Nativity scene, taking on the roles of Mary, Joseph, angels, shepherds, and

Kings.

The evening featured carols performed predominantly ‘as Gaeilge’, with a selection of English carols also included.

Musical accompaniment was provided by múinteoirí Máire and Daniel on the keyboard and guitar.

Principal Lisa Ní Iarlaithe, expressed her gratitude to the school chaplain, Fr. Joe Begley, for his ongoing commitment to the school. She also thanked the staff members and the wider school community for their hard work and participation in making the evening a success.

Shane Doolan to release new single in time for Christmas Killarney-based musician Shane Doolan will release his latest single, ‘SPACEMAN’, this Friday, December 19.

The new track is described as an atmospheric release exploring themes of ambition, isolation, and the desire to escape everyday limits. The single showcases Doolan’s evolving sound, combining emotional storytelling with cinematic production.

The release follows a significant year for the young artist. Earlier in 2024, Doolan headlined his first live show at The Anam Centre in Killarney. The event was a major local success, raising over €1,055 for Movember, the men’s health charity.

Doolan, who first gained local attention after his band won the Battle of the Bands at the Anam Centre, has cited influences such as Walking on Cars, Bon Iver, and

Kodaline. Following his September debut, "The Ruins," and his second single, "After The Bells," he is currently working toward a debut EP set for release in January 2026.

‘SPACEMAN’ will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and all major streaming platforms from this Friday.

Aghadoe Heights hosts Festive family lunches The Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa welcomed families to two weekends of festive celebrations with their popular Festive Family Sunday Lunches.

The special seasonal dining experiences took place on Sunday, December 7, and Sunday, December 14.A highlight of the afternoons for younger guests was

a magical visit from Santa Claus. In addition to the delicious food and festive cheer, all families attending received a complimentary professional portrait to capture the special memory.

Cycling Club takes reins for annual Christmas Day Dip The annual Christmas Day Dip at Dundag, Muckross Lake, is set to continue its tradition this year under new management, with the event scheduled for 11am on Christmas morning.

This year, Killarney Cycling Club is taking over the organisation of the charity dip, with assistance from Killarney Triathlon Club. The event will raise funds for the charity Aware, which marks 40 years of supporting people with depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.

For the past 16 years, Nikki and David McCarthy have successfully organised the popular dip, raising over €70,000 for the charity. Aware provides essential support services to individuals expe-

riencing depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and their concerned loved ones.

The dip officially begins with the annual ‘loud hailer’ countdown at 11:00 am on Christmas morning. Attendees are advised to park in the designated car parks at the Arboretum or Muckross House car park well in advance of the set time.

Christmas markets return to town centre A real community effort has brought bustling Christmas markets back into the heart of Killarney town.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce have linked up with Kerry County Council for the initiative and Killarney Credit Union has come on board as a generous sponsor.

The markets, located just off Main Street under the arch at the Market Cross, are packed with wonderful festive season gift ideas, and they are a wonderful addi-

tion to the town centre this December.

The seasonal cabins adjacent to the Glebe car park feature a real holiday season atmosphere and a fabulous seasonal décor with wonderfully imaginative presents on offer.

The Christmas markets will again be in place on the last weekend before Christmas.

“It’s a fantastic addition to the Christmas in Killarney Festival and we are very grateful to Killarney Credit Union for their wonderful support,” said project leader Bridget O’Keeffe.

Charity walk on Old Kenmare Road to support Kerry Mountain Rescue A charity walk along the Old Kenmare Road will take place on Saturday, December 27, to raise funds for Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, with the Sam Maguire Cup set to join walkers for the day.

The 17km trek is being organised by well known fundraiser and musician Derry Healy, James Cahill and their supporters.

The event was inspired by Killarney man James Cahill, who was seriously injured in a fall while descending Carrauntoohil in July 2016 and was rescued by Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to

University Hospital Kerry and later spent months in rehabilitation.

Walkers will set off from the Upper Torc Car Park at 9.30am and follow the Old Kenmare Road to Kenmare. Along the route, there will be a stop at the restored Sheep Shed at Eskamucky Glen for music and a set dance with the Sam Maguire Cup. A free bus transfer will be available from Kenmare back to Killarney, with booking required in advance. Donations can also be made directly to Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, which operates on a voluntary basis and relies heavily on fundraising and public support.

Kerry FC launches pop-up shop at Kerry Airport Kerry FC has announced the extension of its lead sponsorship deal with Kerry Airport Ireland for the entire 2026 season.

To mark the news, the club has opened a pop-up Christmas shop located in the Arrivals Hall of Kerry Airport, which opened on Tuesday, this week.

The new Kerry FC kits for the upcoming season have arrived in time for Christmas and are available for purchase at the pop-up shop and online. The new home kit is green with a white and gold stripe, while the away kit features black with a gold-plated crest and trim.

Basil Sheerin, Chief Financial Officer of Kerry Airport Ireland, expressed pride in continuing the partnership.

“The Kerry FC story is one of success

and community spirit with the entire county uniting behind the club since it was established,” Mr. Sheerin said. He noted that the increasing level of performance, particularly during the run to the FAI Cup Semi-Final against eventual winners Shamrock Rovers, has inspired fans of all ages.

Annual Lions Club Food Appeal in full swing Killarney Lions Club’s Christmas Food Appeal, which provides food hampers and vouchers to families in need during the festive season, has seen huge support in recent weeks in advance of its annual street collection this Friday (December 19).

The transition year students at Killarney Community College raised money through a fantastic bake sale in the school, while the students of St Brendan’s College had great success by fundraising through a ‘non uniform’ day and carol singing in Killarney town.

Next up was the first ever Santa Cycle fundraiser on Saturday December 6, which was supported by Killarney Cycling Club and Christmas in Killarney.

The event was a great success, with over €700 raised and more than 40 people taking part in the Cycle which culminated in a guest appearance at the head of the Christmas in Killarney parade.

Lions Club volunteers will be out in force this Friday around Killarney town to raise the remaining funds needed for the Food Appeal. Over 100 families were supported through the initiative in 2024, and the Club hopes to provide similar support this year.

Tour directors and drivers gather to remember colleagues More than 180 tour directors, drivers, guides and coach operators from across Ireland gathered in Killarney last weekend for a special Mass to remember colleagues who have passed away over the years.

The Mass was held at the Franciscan Friary and was organised by Tour Director Murt O’Shea, along with fellow CIE Tours Tour Director Philip Duffy. Participants travelled from all over the country to at-

tend.

The service was led by Fr Anthony, with readings delivered by Michael Redmond, the most senior driver/guide in the industry with 62 years’ service, and Dominic Dixon.

The Mass was inspired by the recent passing of Con O’Leary of the Laurels Bar, Killarney, a long-time friend of the touring community. The most recent colleague remembered was Jamie O’Mahony, who passed away unexpectedly.

Tribute to Andy O’Sullivan at Carpet and Furniture Centre The memory of one of Killarney’s best-known businessmen, the late Andy O’Sullivan, was honoured in a unique way this month at Killarney Carpet & Furniture Centre.

The store’s showroom was transformed into a festive Winter Wonderland on Sunday, December 7.

The O’Sullivan family created a dedicated Christmas grotto and photo studio titled Picture for Palliative Under Andy’s Arches, inviting the public to take family photographs against a seasonal backdrop.

The event held deep personal signifi-

cance for the family, marking a tribute to Andy , who passed away last November.

His son Niall O’Sullivan said that his father loved Christmas and that the fundraiser was a way to give back to the Palliative Care team for the support the family received.

In addition to the funds raised by the public, the store has committed to matching every donation made during the event.

A donation box will remain in place at the store until Christmas Eve, allowing shoppers to contribute to the work of Palliative Care throughout the Christmas season.

Ireland’s outdoor and wellness festival Wander Wild will return to Killarney from April 17 to 19, with its largest programme to date.

Now entering its fifth year, the festival will feature more than 120 events across adventure, nature and wellbeing, set mainly within Killarney National Park and supported by a central Basecamp and evening entertainment across the town.

Organisers say the 2026 programme builds on previous years with a wider mix of high-adrenaline activities and slower-paced wellness experiences, designed to cater for all ages and abilities. Events will include guided mountain hikes, rock climbing, paddleboarding, cycling, lake and boat trips, along with yoga, meditation, breathwork and sound therapy sessions.

New additions for 2026 include guided hikes on lesser-used routes such as Carrauntoohil via the Heavenly Gates and North Mangerton, sensory-friendly rock climbing, eco-therapy sessions, creative panel discussions and a dedicated fami-

The Wellness Hub at Killarney House and

Gardens will again host a full schedule of movement and mindfulness sessions throughout the weekend, while evening events will include talks, live music, art workshops and social gatherings at venues around the town.

Accessibility remains a key focus, with

autism-friendly and neurodivergent-inclusive events planned, including tailored walks, climbing sessions and a sensory space at Basecamp. Killarney’s status as an autism-friendly town continues to shape festival planning.

A mix of free and ticketed events will be offered, with prices ranging from €10 to €100. Many activities in the National Park and entertainment at Basecamp will be free to attend.

Festival chairperson Kieran Kavanagh said the aim is to offer a balanced programme that reflects Killarney’s landscape and community, while encouraging people to reconnect with the outdoors and their wellbeing.

Tickets for Wander Wild 2026 are expected to go on sale early in the new year, with further events to be announced.

Local woman supports Kerry Stars for birthday milestone

A Killarney woman marked a special birthday milestone by supporting a local sporting group close to her heart.

Mary O’Doherty recently celebrated her 50th birthday and chose to mark the occasion by asking family and friends to make donations to the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Sports Club in place of gifts. This week, Mary and her daughter Mardia visited the club during a basketball training session, where Mary presented a cheque for €515, with further donations still to come.

Club members and coaches expressed their appreciation for the generous gesture, which will support ongoing train-

ing and activities for athletes. The visit ended on a high note when the athletes joined together to sing Happy Birthday to Mary, providing a memorable moment for all involved.

The Kerry Stars Special Olympics Sports Club thanked Mary, her family and friends for their support and wished her well following her birthday celebrations.

Charity choir raises €1,510 for Palliative Care Unit The Sing for Charity Choir was successful in raising €1,510 this Christmas, with all proceeds going to the Palliative Care Unit in Tralee.

The choir entertained shoppers with a performance at The Outlet Centre on November 29.

The choir expressed thanks to The Outlet Centre for hosting the event again this year, and to everyone who donated generously to the worthy cause. They also extended thanks to the volunteer singers, musicians, and all who helped out on the day of the performance.

Radio Kerry programme explore Black Valley's History and Wildlife A special Christmas edition of the Saturday supplement on Radio Kerry will take listeners on a unique journey through Killarney National Park’s Black Valley with local guide Genie Tangney.

At Our Lady of the Valley Church Genie Tangney and Susan Tangney remembers parish priest Fr Sayers working on the roof.

At the Toll Gate at Lord Brandon's Genie Tagney said the landlord was always looking after his own safety – at night he put a chain, with six inch long links, across the river and he built a lookout tower and the Toll Gate.

The story, broadcast from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, December 27, 2025, features Genie Tangney leading broadcaster Frank Lewis through his special places in his native Black Valley.

Mr. Tangney, a keen observer of nature, shared striking encounters with wildlife, including the sound of "two red stags bellowed all night" and an occasion where "14 white-tailed eagles perched here in our home farmyard in Gearhameen".

The programme delves into the area’s tough past, with Dux O'Donoghue of Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours recalling the precarious life of a fisherman. He noted that in the 1970s, catching "two salmon a week you were better off than a man working in Liebher, the best job in Killarney at the time," but added that fishermen "could go six weeks without catching a salmon".

The history of the area is further evidenced by the story of 'Saltauns,' who trapped otters for skins, earning £14 for each.

The broadcast also touches on the history of the native Red Deer herd. Former regional manager of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, Paddy O’Sullivan, recalled a never-implemented plan to continue shooting 400 deer a year over ten or eleven years to manage the population.

The history of travel is also explored, highlighting the jaunting car, pony, and boat Killarney day trip which has been operating for 278 years. At Lord Brandon’s Cottage quay, Mr Tangney and Mr.O’Donoghue recounted the 70-yearold local story of an O’Donoghue firing a large plinth of rock over Purple mountain to the Gap of Dunloe.

Conservation Ranger Mary Sheehan pointed out local wildlife, including the Ring Ouzel, a rare summer visitor, and the sight of a pair of Whooper Swans flying the length of Cloghernoosh Lake. Mr. Tangney also pointed out the river gravel beds where Atlantic Salmon shape a depression for their eggs.

A letter from Santa to the Killarney Advertiser Dear Readers of the Killarney Advertiser Ho, Ho, Ho! Christmas is almost here. I’m getting ready for my trip to Killarney, the best town in the world. I’m up here in the North Pole making sure the toys are ready in time for all of the wonderful boys and girls in Killarney.

My sleigh is almost ready to go, and the reindeer are ready for the journey. Excitement is building among the elves, some of them might even try and sneak on to my sleigh!! That’s happened before, if you’d ever believe that.

How are those pesky elves behaving by the way?

I know they can be a nuisance sometimes and get up to all sorts of mischief! But they’re doing a great job, always reporting back to me about who is being good and who isn’t. I have to say, the children in Killarney and the surrounding areas are always on their best behaviour!

Out of all of the places I travel to each year, I’m always so excited to go to Killarney. It is always such a special time at Christmas, the bright lights, the magic and the pure joy that surrounds the town. It is simply beautiful.

Killarney does it best. I love how the town goes all out for the festive season. The Magic Parades each week are fantastic, and I know it is so joyful for all of the children. Have you been to one yet? The last one is happening tomorrow night, December 20, so make sure you attend. It’ll be great fun!

The Christmas markets are wonderful and add so much to the festive atmosphere in town. It’s hard to believe its only in its second year! It’s already a wonderful Christmas staple.

The ice rink is a long-standing tradition in the town and its great fun for all of the family. It’s a

brilliant activity, especially if it’s raining or cold outside. What a better way to spend a day than at the ice rink.

Don’t forget that my elves and I are still keeping a watch until Christmas Eve. Stay on your best behaviour. Make sure you listen to Mom and Dad – they are always right! Do your homework and clean up your toys. On Christmas Eve, go to bed early and don’t stay up too late. I might pass by unknowingly. Do keep a glass of milk and a few treats out for me and the reindeer, we get awfully peckish during the night.

I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and the happiest new year. I’ll have your presents under the tree by Christmas morning.

Undocumented Irish advised to remain in US over Christmas TG4 aired a special programme about undocumented Irish people living in the United States on Wednesday night.

Free online supports available over Christmas and New Year period A series of free online support groups will be running throughout Christmas and the New Year for those in need.

Turn2Me, a national mental health charity, said the festive season is their busiest time of year, with a significant increase in people seeking mental health support due to loneliness, family conflict or financial pressures. To meet this seasonal surge in demand, Turn2Me will host daily themed support groups at midday from December 25 to January 1, ensuring people across Ireland have continuous access to professional and compassionate mental health support. All groups are free, confidential, and run by mental health professionals. Fiona O’Malley,

The broadcast comes as undocumented Irish citizens are being advised not to return to Ireland for Christmas amid concerns over President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. New figures from the Department of Foreign Affairs reveal a significant increase in Irish citizens who are requesting assistance in relation to deportation from the United States. Speaking on the programme, prominent Irish American lawyer and founding member of the Irish American Democrats, Brian O’ Dwyer, advised undocumented Irish to remain in the US and not contemplate travelling home over the festive period. He said: “In the current climate, if they are undocumented, they can’t go home because they are not going to get back in. Now, they just have to stay low and hope this boils over. I can’t give them much better ad-

vice that that. It’s that dark, and it’s cruel. What they are doing is they are picking up people and then detaining them unnecessarily.” It is not known how many undocumented Irish there are in the United States but estimates vary anywhere between ten and fifty thousand. Most are what are termed “overstayers”, people who have remained in the country after their permission to be there legally has expired. 63 Irish people have requested consular assistance so far this year, that’s a massive increase since Trump took over office. 15 asked for assistance in 2024 while 18 reached out in 2023. The 63 people who sought help includes those who have already been deported and those who are going through the deportation process, which often includes being held in detention at immigration holding centres across the USA. According to the Department, the actual number of Irish citizens being deported or held by ICE could be higher than 63.

CEO of Turn2Me, said the organisation prepares every year for a substantial increase in service usage during December and early January. In addition to support groups, Turn2Me continues to offer up to six free one-to-one counselling sessions for adults living in Ireland, along with its free meditation programme, and a free ‘Thought Catcher’ online mood diary service. O’Malley added: “Our goal is to make mental health support accessible, immediate, and stigma-free. Christmas can intensify emotions, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. Whether someone is struggling with grief, feeling overwhelmed by family pressures, or simply feeling low, we encourage them to join our support groups or access our counselling services.”

First section of South Kerry Greenway opens just in time for Christmas The first section of the South Kerry Greenway has opened just in time for Christmas.

People will now be able to walk along the greenway for the very first time this week. From today, a 3.1km section of the greenway between the old Kells Railway Station and Golden’s Shop at Kells will be fully accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Perfect for a crisp Christmas morning walk! Construction is still ongoing for other parts of the facility. It is anticipated that the next section of the greenway, from the trailhead at Glenbeigh through Curra Wood and on to the road overbridge at Moun-

tain Stage, which spans 5km, will open to the public in early summer of 2026.

Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Municipal District, Cllr Norma Moriarty described it as a very historic day for the Iveragh Peninsula. She said: “The greenway will be an all-weather and all-seasons amenity and offers a beautiful facility in a breathtaking location to locals and visitors alike.” Temporary car parking is available for greenway users at Golden’s of Kells and at the former Kells Railway Station car park. Access for people with disabilities is available at the latter car park. The official opening of this section of the greenway will take place in 2026.

Busy Christmas Period at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club The run-in to Christmas proved a busy time at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, with a series of events marking the close of the competitive year.

The period also marked the end of Máire Murphy’s term as ladies captain.

Before handing over the role to Annete McNeice, she presided over several key

fixtures, including the Ladies Club Foursomes, the Ladies Major Competition and the Stableford Competition. The annual Golfer of the Year awards were also presented during the festive schedule. Members acknowledged Máire Murphy’s contribution during her time as captain, with strong participation across all events reflecting a successful and active season for the club.

Community College student among ETB Christmas Card winners A student from Killarney Community College was among the winners announced at the annual Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) Christmas Card Competition.

Emmy O’Donoghue, a first year student at Killarney Community College, was named a runner-up in the county-wide competition.

The competition invited entries from

students across Kerry ETB’s eight post-primary schools. This year, learners were asked to interpret the theme of Respect, one of Kerry ETB’s core values.

The overall winner was Ella O’Neill, a

Festive photoshoot raises €1,200 for Jack and Jill Foundation Community spirit shone brightly once again at the 11th annual photoshoot fundraiser held in support of the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation.

The event successfully raised a total of €1,200, which is equivalent to 66 hours of vital in-home nursing care provided by the foundation.

The fundraiser was made possible thanks to the generosity of participating families and the continued support of the International Hotel, where Catriona and Tracy provided the venue as a photo studio. Invaluable assistance was also provided by Mary O’Carroll.

Jack and Jill provides in-home nursing and respite support to families caring for children with complex medical needs, allowing parents crucial time together and with their other children.

Siobhán Reen Kelliher, the Jack and Jill Liaison Nurse Manager for Kerry, the Kerry/Cork border, and the Kerry/Limer-

ick border, emphasised the importance of local support. “We cannot continue to do what we do without such community support,” she said.

The organiser, respected photographer Marie Carroll O’Sullivan who also works as a Special Needs Assistant, noted that the nurses become an essential part of the family structure, offering reassurance, compassion, and skilled care. Their presence supports the child, strengthens the entire family unit, and allows families to simply be families.

Following the event, the Marie said:: “I am so grateful to everyone who supported this year’s photoshoot, the International Hotel, Mary O’Carroll, every family who came along, and of course Jack and Jill for the incredible work they do every day. The kindness and generosity of our community never fails to inspire me, and I’m proud to support a charity that makes such a meaningful difference to families’ lives.”

Warning as road users remain invisible in the dark Kerry County Council has reported a notable increase in the number of people using roads in low light and darkness without wearing visible or luminous clothing, such as hi-vis vests or armbands.

To address the issue and improve visibility, the Council has begun distributing hi-visibility vests to road users in rural parts of the county. The initiative launched last Saturday night in Ballymacelligott, where vests were given to local residents.

Kerry County Council Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh expressed concern over the rising reports of pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter users remaining invisible to

motorists.

"A motorist may come upon a pedestrian, a cyclist, or a scooter at the last second, and that's when it's too late to react and avoid a tragedy," Mr. Keogh said. "I would appeal to anyone using the road to make yourself visible to motorists by wearing high visibility clothing."

He added that simple measures, such as wearing a hi-vis vest, an armband, or carrying a torch while walking, are essential for the safety of both vulnerable road users and motorists and can save lives.

The Road Safety Authority is supporting the campaign and recently provided the Council with a supply of vests for distribution across rural areas to promote the road safety message.

Kerry competitors set for rally action over Christmas Local motorsport fans have plenty to follow this festive season with significant Kerry interest in two major events scheduled for Monday, December 29.

BOGGERAGH RALLYSPRINT

Cork Motor Club will host the O’Leary Building & ICF Boggeragh Rallysprint in the Boggeragh Mountains. The event features a 5.6km gravel stage on terrain previously used for the Jim Walsh Cork Forest Rally.

Located near Nadd, the loose-surface course will see competitors complete a minimum of three timed runs, with all times counting toward the final result.

The entry list has already reached 75 competitors, with several Kerry drivers and co-drivers confirmed.

The Junior 1000 class features three local crews: Frank Wharton and Denny Greaney in a Toyota Aygo, Aidan O’Leary in a similar Aygo, and David Slattery paired with Ger Somers in a Hyundai i10.

In the senior categories, Killarney and District Motor Club members Cyril Whar-

ton and Anthony O’Connor will compete in a Subaru Impreza. Additionally, Kerry Motor Club co-driver Greaney will perform double duty, also navigating for PJ O’Connor in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9.

TURKEY RUN RALLY

Further north, the Maiden City Motor Club will run the JWA Turkey Run Rally on the same day at Shackleton near Derry.

Killarney co-driver Elaine Ní Shé is making the long trip to compete alongside Dungannon’s Richard O'Lone. The pair will be campaigning a Ford Fiesta Rally3.

The event also features the Browne brothers, Colm and Michael. While based in Dungannon, the duo are members of the well-known Browne rallying dynasty from Brosna. They are entered in their Ford Escort G3.

Celtic FC celebrate 2025 with awards night x Killarney Celtic FC held its Senior Awards Night recently, recognising achievements across the club for the past season.

The Billy Healy Club Person of the Year Posthumous Award was presented to the late Paudie O’Callaghan.

Matt Keane received the Aidan Cronin Memorial Perpetual Shield as Senior A Team Player of the Year, while Mark Harnett won the Alex Schober Memorial

Shield for the B Team.

Cillian Coffey was named Youth Player of the Year. Gráinne Kennedy collected Senior Ladies Player of the Year, with Gráinne Kelliher honoured as U17 Girls Player of the Year.

Tara Cronin received the Outstanding Commitment Award. Outstanding Service Awards went to Packie O’Connor, John 'Don' O’Donoghue and John 'JC' Counihan, while Tom ‘The Dub’ Meeha received a Special Recognition Award.

ANIMATION: More than Just the Way of Expression that the symbols, sentences, and the paragraphs we can construct and string together, can have a deeper meaning the more we examine into it.

THE ART OF ILLUSION

My name is Kuba Kierzkowski, I’m 19 years old and would like to learn a bit of everything, doing journalism for a few weeks for my work experience.

I wasn’t expecting to be actually writing articles, but hey, just another piece of knowledge acquired under my belt of skills.

What started out as just a mere set of quick moving, rapidly shifting pages, images that were meant to trick one’s mind in believing that they are watching an animal sprint in from to of them; an illusion of movement, demonstrated with paper cut outs, that eventually peeved the way into something much complex.

Since the dawn of time, we as humans always had ways to entertain ourselves: from throwing rocks off cliffs to the many new ways we found laughter in actions performed by fellow animals or people, that was until the invention of the paper, which then led to the wonderful invention of literature: the sudden realisation

It is often said that actions speak louder than words, but that wasn’t the case until the release of Fantasmagorie in 1908 by Emile Cohl, where the public got their first taste storytelling solely through pictures only. While the plot of Fantasmagorie wasn’t as coherent or groundbreaking of a story as one might have perceived during its initial showcase, that wasn’t the intention; the author strived to convey how they viewed the world through their imagination through the series of events, and past experiences that had shaped and moulded this very first iteration of a cartoon. Ever since the first creation of a cartoon, where after the many decades of countless attempts to master the craft that had inspired many

by Emil Cohl. Only few determined minds succeeded in re-inventing the wheel in a much greater quality and length, and only one would pioneer the art of illusion to its full usage.

WALT DISNEY

While today’s Disney is seen as nothing more as the head honcho of the corporate-Monopoly game, acquiring various smaller studios and doing everything in the name of money, the Disney we once knew started out as just the humble studio led by the humbler man of the same name: Walt Disney. Young Walt like many other people, once sought to

become a successful man. Due to his rich imagination and thinking, Walt would soon enough come up with the idea of principles for animation and gladly stick his last name into it: a list of 12 rules and techniques in improving the illusion of art of animation. With Disney’s 12 principles of animation under the belt, it was a matter of time until the studio made the first ever feature-length animated film under the title: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Considered a classic amongst animated movies, there’s a chance that you might have seen a glimpse or have heard of the film that had opened people to get their animation projects started.

While some people believed it wouldn’t get more complicated, the 90’s would shortly arrive at their doorstep.

TOY STORY

With the introduction of three-dimensional animation, Toy Story being the first entirely computer-generated movie, it was quite the evolutionary leap then as it was when Disney made their debut.

Although that does bring the question: technology and animation, what does it mean for the future? What implications does it have for the industries and the consequences that might come along the way? It is unsure, but as long as people are willing to learn either through digital or traditional ways, animation will never be replaced as every day. Someone will come up with a new idea to make something, whether it be physical or done on a device: it always starts with an idea, hand-drawn or written on the paper or school document, slowly transforming

into a concept with the help of references or people we’ve come to work with.

The moment we pick up a pen or pencil, we get a rush of thoughts racing in our minds, perhaps we’re just doing it out of the ordinary or to avoid being engulfed by boredom. At any place, anywhere at any time, what it means to be animator; while it is hard to become one, especially if you’re all out doing the story, writing, animating by yourself. Even if you might feel like you’re not good enough, you should always give it a try. After all, everyone has to learn from their mistakes at least a couple of times to achieve greatness, even the likes of Walt Disney.

What it means to be an animator isn’t about standing out from the crowd, the rewards, money or gifts one might crave for their justified hard work… It’s about having fun: a passion project with friends, something you want to show to the world with all of you love from heart, or simply just a competition between who can make a better cartoon. A vast number of shows weren’t just developed just because; perhaps the reason they wanted to make one was to simply entertain people, like how they were entertained by cartoons they saw when young.

Think of a show like Ed, Edd, ’n’ Eddy, the sole reason it exists was all because of a dare, and yet; it has garnered quite the following with its charming style. Being an animator means creation, being your own author of the story, you are the ruler of whatever story you want to make.

All it takes is determination and strong resilience.

NEW GP PRACTICE OPENS IN KILLARNEY Dunloe Medical Practice is opening on 1st December and is being led by Dr Aidan Daly, who has worked in Killarney for a number of years.

He comes from a strong medical background and is a second-generation GP, following his father who worked as a GP for almost 50 years in Tralee and subsequently in Killarney.

Training and Experience: Dr Daly has trained in hospital medicine and general practice, with extensive experience across all ages. Before pursuing a career in medicine, Dr Daly studied Marine Science and obtained an MSc in Ecology. He is a member of both the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Irish College of General Practitioners. He is currently the attending physician and medical officer

Calling All Home Builders and Housing Developers for Affordable Housing in Tralee and Killarney Delivering Homes, Building Communities is the Government’s Housing Action Plan to 2030.

Under this plan, the Government seeks to increase Affordable Housing delivery by Local Authorities.

Kerry County Council is proposing to establish an Affordable Housing Scheme in the urban areas of Tralee and Killarney through an Expression of Interest (EOI) to Developers and Builders.

New Kerry deal for local lad Okwute Cup hero signs fresh contract as 2026 LOI fixtures are revealed

Kerry FC have confirmed that Killarney man Daniel Okwute will be staying in Mounthawk Park for the 2026 League of Ireland First Division season.

The 22-year-old winger has been part of Kerry’s senior set-up since the summer of 2023 when he returned to the Kingdom following spells with Stockport and Finn Harps.

Since then, Okwute has made 80 appearances for the Boys in Green, scoring seven goals and racking up 15 assists.

The ex-Killarney Celtic player was instrumental in a number of games, including this past season’s FAI Cup quarter-final when he bagged an unforgettable winner as Kerry beat Sligo Rovers 4-3 after extra time.

“I’m really glad to have signed back with Kerry FC for the upcoming season,” Okwute told KerryFC.com. “I’m looking forward to getting back into pre-season training and meeting the boys again. It should be another great year in 2026.

Let’s see what happens!”

Kerry manager Colin Healy welcomed the news. “It’s great to have Daniel signed back for the 2026 campaign, and hopefully it will be a big season for him.

He’s got lots of potential and I’m looking forward to having him in for pre-season.

With that under his belt, he can hit the ground running at the start of the new campaign.”

The fixtures for the 2026 season have been revealed with Kerry facing an away trip to UCD on opening night (February 13). They will then play Athlone Town and Longford Town at home on consecutive weekends, with away matches against Treaty United and Wexford to follow.

Fans will no doubt be looking forward to their first clash with recently relegated Cork City. That particular Munster Derby will take place on April 6 at Turners Cross. Kerry will also play City on the very last day of the season. That will be a home fixture, scheduled for October 16.

It should be another great year in 2026. Let’s see what happens!

Young guns on fire for Lakers Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers enjoyed an impressive 85-66 victory over Moy Tolka Rovers in Dublin last Saturday as they improved their Men’s National League Division 1 record to 6-4 ahead of the festive period.

The Macron-manufactured gear was launched by senior players Seánie McGrath, Ryan Kelliher and Luke Palmer at Kerry Airport, who are continuing their sponsorship of the club into the 2026 season.

“We are proud to play our part by extending our sponsorship of Kerry FC and we are looking forward to working closely with the club in 2026,” said Basil Sheer-

in, Chief Financial Officer of Kerry Airport Ireland.

The home shirt features a stylised yellow and white stripe down the right-hand side while the away shirt is black with gold trim.

“It’s a nice new kit,” McGrath said of the home design. “It will make a perfect Christmas gift.”

Kelliher is a fan of the away jersey. “It fits lovely and the sleeve sponsors (Higgins Waste and Recycling) are nice too.”

Killarney players earn medals at Judo Championships Last Saturday, 11 athletes from Killarney Judo Club travelled to Dublin on a cold and blustery day to compete in the highlight of the Irish judo calendar: the All-Ireland Judo Championships.

The event attracted the highest attendance in over 20 years, with approximately 400 competitors taking part across a wide range of categories, many of which featured close to ten participants.

Following strong performances earlier in the season at competitions in Galway and Cork, the All-Ireland Championships marked the flagship event of the year.

All competitors represented their club with distinction, facing the best judoka from across the country. Patrik Polubnak, James Maher and Adam Tomlinson all made their All-Ireland Championship debuts, gaining valuable experience on the national stage.

The athletes demonstrated excellent technical skill throughout the day, exe-

cuting impressive throws as well as effective groundwork techniques, including hold-downs, armbars and chokes, to secure important victories.

Coach Tim Kelly praised the team’s dedication. “Every player has put an enormous amount of work into training since September, so it was great to see that effort rewarded. Michelle Walshe retained her All-Ireland title for the third consecutive year, while Emily O’Donoghue built on her recent performances to claim her first-ever All-Ireland title.”

The club enjoyed an outstanding overall result, finishing the championships with three gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals, further highlighting the strength and depth of judo within the local community.

Following a very successful competition period, the club will now take a break for the Christmas holidays. Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to get in touch via Facebook or Instagram.

After a close first half, the Killarney outfit made their move in the third quarter, creating some daylight with a 14-14 run.

That left the scores at 61-49 in favour of the Lakers and they never looked back from there.

Crosstown rivals the Killarney Cougars were beaten by the Drogheda Wolves last weekend despite the best efforts of Seán Conway (23 points), Simon Olanipekun (19) and Paul Adedeji (17). Jack Spillane and Josh Vermiglio also put in good performances but the Wolves were too strong on the day, eventually running out 88-68 winners.

Next up for the Cougars is an away match against the Eagles at UL on Saturday. Their next home match will be against Moycullen on January 10.

Elsewhere, in the Women’s Super League, St Paul’s suffered a heavy 88-54 defeat at the hands of UCC Glanmire. They will be hoping to bounce back at home to Brunell this Saturday.

Every week the Advertiser starts with a blank sheet and a mind full of sporting activities, the highs and lows, the swings and roundabouts of a very sports conscious town like Killarney and its environs.

This column is open to all codes. Some are excellent in keeping their clubs’ activities to the fore in this weekly sports slot. Others rarely contact this column.

The most recent triad of articles on the impact of demographic changes in Killarney on different codes is a case in point. I relied on the facts as outlined in the latest Census (2022) and other reliable sources which stood the test when cross checked. The opinions I articulated drew a strong reaction from readers with some agreeing reluctantly with my findings, realising the challenges which lie ahead. Others disagreed very significantly, as is their right, both with

the underlying facts and my prediction of what I believe will happen within a decade at most for the shape of sport in Killarney.

Not having the bilocation characteristics of Sir Boyle Roche’s bird, it is not possible to attend several sports games at the same time. The story goes that when excusing his absence from parliament one day, he stated: “Mr. Speaker, it is impossible I could have been in two places at once, unless I were a Boyle Roche’s bird.”

Hence, one must rely on hardworking PROs. If I do not physically attend a game, I never comment on the performance of a referee, even if some readers become enraged with the decisions of the unfortunate ref. Objectivity, or more precisely the lack of it, clouds judgment. I am quite at ease commenting on the performance of a referee if I attend the games in person. I comment on the referee and indicate why I think the match official’s performance can range from poor to very good. I explain how I form my opinion and it is subjective but based on what I see. I make my own mind up, and in all cases my opinion is on the performance and not on him or her on a personal level.

19.12.2025 | By Eamonn Fitzgerald I am looking forward to two sports programmes in particular during the period after Christmas. ‘George Best i gCorcaigh’ on TG4 on St Stephen’s Day (December 26) at 8.15pm, and ‘GAA 70s – Réabhlóid Shóisialta’ on TG4 on December 22 and 30.

On Stephen's Day, there will be a new show on George Best, the precursor to Messi. He was one of the greatest footballers of his time and became loved for his skill on the pitch, having honed his skills in impromptu street games in his home city of Belfast where he learned that unbelievable swerve, the hallmark of his great days with Manchester United.

He was one of United’s star players for 11 years. Unfortunately, his extravagant lifestyle off the pitch meant that he left the club prematurely. I recall his time with Cork Celtic when their rivalry with Cork Hibs was at its height. The 50th anniversary of his signing for Cork Celtic falls this month, and the story of his time with the club will be told in this new documentary. It was shot entirely in Cork and features very rare archival material when he was in action for Cork Celtic.

Recently the Kerry GAA Board organised a Gala Ball in the Gleneagle to honour the Kerry football teams from 1975 onwards, still known as Kerry’s Golden Years. It was a wonderful occasion and whets the appetite for the TG4’s documentary ‘GAA 70s – Réabhlóid Shóisialta’.

There are two versions of the programme. It premieres on TG4 & TG4.ie worldwide on December 22 at 7.45pm with Irish Sign Language and audio description. The English subtitles and audio description version will be on TG4 & TG4.ie worldwide on December 30 at 9pm.

Kerry folk have fond memories of Micko Dwyer’s 1975 bachelors team led by captain Mickey Ned. This spawned the great Kerry v Dublin rivalry. The Dubs took over Hill 16 bringing banter, craic and freshness to Croker. But it was more than the games and these new TG4 programmes demonstrates that it was more than crowd-pulling matches.

It was a social revolution and that is very clear from legends of the game such as the following in their comments: Pat Spillane (Kerry): “Micko (Mick O’Dwyer) came on board, and we hopped on this magic carpet and he took us on the most magical ride.”

Tommy Joe Gilmore (Galway): “The appointment of Kevin Heffernan was a major, major coup.”

Martin ‘Major’ Joyce (St Christopher Gaels GFC): “It was all down to Kevin Heffernan; he gave an awful lot of inspiration not just to traveller people but settled people.”

Our girls were out early this morning and in what was a very close first half found themselves Down 1-0 at the break, the girls pushed hard for the equaliser all second half but couldn’t break down a resilient defence, park added two late goals to take the win. Again with this group of girls Plenty of effort and teamwork on show, even if the result didn’t go our way.

Thanks to the park for a very sporting game and to Jon for officiating We regroup, learn, and go again BOYS U15 PREMIER: Killorglin 3-3 Killarney Athletic. UNDER 13 BOYS DIVISION 2: Killarney Athletic Cs 3 Castlemaine 1. Rian Horgan x 2 Sean Doolan x 1. We welcomed Castlemaine to Woodlawn on Saturday morning, and the Athletic boys started strong, dominating possession and creating good chances. Castlemaine did have chances also but the always reliable Sonny Maguire in goal pulled off some excellent saves when needed. Neither team were able to break the deadlock, 0-0 at half time.

Athletic started strong in the second half but were unlucky to find themselves 1 nil down from a well taken Castlemaine goal. The boys didn't panic though and as they have done all season they showed great attitude and drew level soon after with an outstanding finish yet again from Rian Horgan. Rian soon added another to give Athletic a 2-1 lead. The boys continued to pile on the pressure and Sean Doolan gave them a 3-1 lead with a well taken header in the box. That's the way the game finished, brilliant performance from the all the boys who started and came on as subs. Special mention to Alex Angland in central defence who was outstanding. Thank you to Castlemaine, the referee, and all who came out to support the boys.

BOYS U12 DIVISION 3: Killarney Athletic C 4-0 LB Rovers C. James Glyn x 2 Ollie Pyne x 1 Carlos González x 1. A very solid all-round performance from our young blues this afternoon. Excellent teamwork on show, with the lads working hard in every phase of the game from start to finish. Super effort from everyone involved - well done lads! Thanks to LB Rovers and the referee MOTM - Denis O’Donoghue BOYS U12 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 1-0 Fenit Samphires. Our under 12A team just about got the job done in awful weather conditions versus a determined and well

organized Fenit. It wasn't a day for fancy football and chances were at a premium in the first half with Rian hitting the post and Joe going close, but we went into halftime nil all. Fenit started the brighter in the second half and looked dangerous on the counter, but our defence held firm. The breakthrough came from the spot when Finn was taken down in the Box and John Hegarty converted to go one up. The team held out and showed good character to claim the win and all 3 points. Thanks to Fenit for really putting it up to us, the game was played in great spirits in tough conditions.

Celtic qualified for the quarter final of the Munster U17 Cup after a blistering 5-minute spell laid the foundation for this clearcut victory. Celtic were 3up after 26 minutes after Kiernan Kelly, Dara Horan and Ignacy Truchan all found the net. Celtic came again with another 3-goal salvo before half time to leave them 6-0 up at the break. Celtic added 1 more goal in the 2nd half to qualify for the last 8. This game will be played in the New Year.

Mastergeeha U14 GIRLS PREMIER: St Brendan’s Park 2–7 Mastergeeha. A superb performance from our U14 girls away in Tralee under the lights. Goalscorers on the night were Éabha Moynihan (2), Sophie Moynihan (2), Gracie Maher (2) and Isla Cronin.

Brilliant goals and flowing passages of play throughout including a fantastic late penalty save by Shauna O'Riordan. A big thank you to St Brendan’s Park management for accommodating the Friday night fixture and the girls for a very sporting game. Also, a well-done referee Mark Dineen who kept the game flowing.

U12 BOYS NATIONAL CUP ROUND 4: Mastergeeha FC 1-2 Adare (Limerick).

Goal Scorer Thomas O'Sullivan. MOTM: Nathan Cronin. Mastergeeha U12s had their fourth outing in the SFAI National Cup Round 4 today with a home fixture in Kilbrean Park against Adare, Co. Limerick. The weather didn't play its part as game tipped off in torrential rain at 2pm but the support from parents and friends on the side-line was absolutely huge in tough conditions. Mastergeeha very unlucky in first half not to put a couple of chances away from Olivier Stachowiak, Mathew Cahill and Thomas Corkery.

Mathew Cahill causing havoc on the right side throughout the game. Half time both teams went in 0-0 in what was a tough physical first half for both teams. Ronan O'Leary was outstanding in the throughout with great saves. Adare caught us with a high ball over the top with Adare striker clinical finish. Unfortunately, we were unlucky to concede with an OG after, but Mastergeeha kept the fight going. With 7 mins to go Mastergeeha tried to pull it back with a great finish from Thomas O'Sullivan playing in Centre Midfield. Huge strike finding the back of the net. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to bring it to a draw and Adare go through to Round 5 of the National Cup. Nathan Cronin outstanding in defence today with our keeper Ronan O'Leary excellent in goal. A great overall team performance by Mastergeeha today, very unlucky and fought back to the last seconds. In defence with Nathan Cronin, Josh Sullivan, Thomas Corkery, Conor McCarthy, and keeper Ronan O'Leary in great form today. Our Midfield had a dominating performance with Mathew Cahill, Ronan O'Neill, Sean Breen, Dara O’Keeffe, Aidan McGuire and Dara Burchill. Our striker force of Oliver Stacchowick and Thomas O'Sullivan were outstanding in their assists, work rate, recovery runs and goal by Thomas. Today's Man of the Match goes to Nathan Cronin. Big thanks to Mastergeeha committee again for again the impressive spread of hot food, sandwiches, treats and refreshments for both teams and families. Very much appreciated. Best of luck to Adare in Round 5 of the National Cup after Christmas.

game. Great communication throughout.

U13 BOYS DIVISION 1: Mastergeeha 4-1 MEK. Our goal scorers were Adam Cremin, Callum O’Connor, Ronan Casey and Warren O’Boyle. MOTM: Match Adam Cremin. A good team performance on Saturday morning and 3 league points secured at home to MEK. This was a very competitive game and a much closer affair than the score line suggest. MEK had plenty of possession and created some good scoring opportunities, but Daniel McNeer was equal to the challenge between the posts. Our opening goal came in the 15th minute when Warren O’Boyle played Adam Cremin through and Adam finished superbly. Another Warren O’Boyle assist led to our second goal 4 minutes from half time. This time Callum O’Connor netted. MEK got a goal back 12 minutes into the second half when a superbly struck free kick from outside the box found the top corner. It was not until 12 minutes from time that the game opened up and a good strike from distance from Matthew O’Riordan was parried by the MEK keeper, but Ronan Casey was on hand to toe poke the ball home.

Warren O’Boyle turned from provider to scorer 2 minutes later to put the result beyond doubt. In what was overall a good team performance Adam Cremin gets the nod for man of the match. His goal in the first half was very well taken and his work rate throughout was superb.

U13 BOYS DIVISION 2 SOUTH: Ballyhar B 2-5 Mastergeeha B. U15 BOYS PREMIER: Mastergeeha 0-5 Park.

Kilcummin GAA FREWEN CUP: Congratulations to St Brendan’s College Killarney on their Frewen Cup win today in Munster Colleges Football when they defeated Clonakilty 3-7 to 0-15. With Daragh Keane scoring 2-3, Cian Stack starting at centre back and Liam O’Mahony and Joe O’Connor coming off the bench there was plenty Kilcummin players in action. Oran Lynch, Mark Fleming and Conor Finnegan were also included in the panel. Well done to all the lads.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club NIGHT AT MURPHY’S: What a wonderful night in Murphy's Bar again last Friday night at our pre-Christmas gathering as we were once again royally treated by Sean Murphy and his staff. Along with the usual presentations we were also delighted to present Sean a special piece of commemorative slate to mark the 70th Anniversary celebrations for the Bar this year. As well as picking up our Singles Matchplay Cup and the Ian O'Leary Memorial Club Strokeplay Shield for his double earlier this year, James Foley was also honoured on the night with the Dan O'Leary Memorial Shield as our 2025 Club Person of the Year for his efforts on and off the course this year. Well done to James on amazing year for himself in so many ways!

CHRISTMAS TURKEYS: We were thankful of getting two rounds in on Sunday despite the weather forecast as the players that took part certainly felt the effects of the conditions! Killarney Valley AC TRAIL: Killarney Valley athletes took to the mountains this week with a number of runners taking part in the Glanageenty Trail races which was part of the Irish Mountain Running Association events.

Conor Kissane took the win in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:43:04. Derek Pyne raced the half also finishing in 8th place with a time of 2:04:19 for his first trail event. Patrick Kissane and Conor O'Leary took on the 10k event running well in tough conditions.

Killarney Swimming Club GALA: The Club held its annual Christmas Fun Gala and Christmas Party on Sunday. Swimmers enjoyed fun and games in the pool, followed by a party at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. The Club would like to thank Lynne O'Neill for

all her hard work over the years as Club Secretary. Lynne has now finished in the role, and Catherine McGillicuddy has taken over as secretary. We want to thank all the parents, coaches, and volunteers for their hard work so far this season, and the swimmers for their dedication to their sport. Training finishes on Sunday, 21st December, and swimmers return to the pool on 3rd January in preparation for the Long Course Season.

KILCUMMIN SCHOOL MEMORY TREE: Last Wednesday, Fr. Kieran held a beautiful ceremony where he blessed the School Crib and the outdoor Memory Tree, the staff and children sang “Away in a Manger”. The tree will light up every evening until the 6th of January; there will be a special Mass on that day to remember all our loved ones names. If you would like your loved ones remembered, there are memory cards available in the Post Office. All proceeds going to the Parents Association for the school. Thank you for your support.

PINK NIGHT SAVE THE DATE: The Ladies’ Committee of Kilcummin GAA Club are delighted to announce the return of its annual Pink Night, taking place in The Klub Bar on Saturday, January 3rd.

Now in its twelfth year—and supporting Comfort for Chemo for the fifth year running—this much-loved event promises a fantastic evening of fun and fundraising for all. Guests will be greeted with a prosecco reception and chocolate-dipped strawberries to set the tone for a relaxed post-Christmas celebration. While everyone is encouraged to wear pink, dressing up is completely optional—the true spirit of the night is community, enjoyment, and support for a great cause. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed Female and Best Dressed Male. The festivities begin at 8pm, with entertainment from Derry and Rosie Healy from 8pm to 10:00pm, followed by Barry McGrath playing late into the night. A brilliant raffle will take place on the night, along with fantastic door prizes kindly provided by our wonderful local sponsors, whose continued support is deeply appreciated.

SAMARITANS: The Annual Church Gate Collection for Samaritans will take place at all Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Martina Ryle O'Sullivan will lead the children’s choir at the 5pm Christmas Eve Mass this year.

Children from the age of 4 years old and older are invited to participate. A practice session will be held in the Church on Monday, 22nd December from 6pm to 6.45pm.
