Residents again calling for New Road traffic solution

Residents of Monastery Gardens have told the Killarney Advertiser that they feel “intimated” and have been “verbally abused” by motorists in the New Road area during the school runs.

They are calling on Gardai, school principals and Killarney Municipal District to find a solution. “We need a solution that works for everyone, the schools, parents and the resi-

tact and protected. In 1948 a secondary school was founded, with the current St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School building commencing construction two years later. This building is still in use with a further extension added to the school in 1984. While there is sadness with the Sisters departing, it also heralds an exciting time for St Brigid’s as land which was part of the Convent grounds, has been gifted for

a proposed new school, as the demand for places has outgrown its current accommodation. It is hoped that this generous gift will ensure that the legacy of Nano Nagle and the Presentation ethos will live on into the future in Killarney and beyond. As the focus now is on the development of this new school, there are no immediate plans for the future of the Convent building and the remaining grounds.

the schools that serve the street. “Today [Wednesday], while trying to reach home at lunchtime, I was abused by an irate parent who got angry about the traffic," she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Residents of New Road put up with being blocked at, or out of, home several times a day. I attempt to avoid school times but forgot that, on Wednesdays, schoolchildren leave at lunchtime. However, being verbally abused for trying to get home is unacceptable,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Residents also put up with both noise and air pollution, especially since parents

CONFUSION

One of the problems associated with traffic on New Road is that the timing of the one-way street regulation does not coincide with school times. The issue was highlighted by Cllr Donal Grady at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting. “At present there is confusion as children come out of school at 2.20pm whilst signs advise of roads closing at 2.45pm,” he told the meeting. Previously, both prior and during the pandemic, Kerry County Council have held a series of meetings with An Garda Siochána and the school principals in order to improve traffic flow. “In order to revise the times of the oneway system along New Road, Kerry County Council will have to go through a formal Section 38 [public consultation and/or planning permission] process,” said a Council official. “A survey of the road has been undertaken and designs and short-term measures such as an increase in set-down areas and school bus set-downs have been developed and can be implemented subject to further consultation with the school principals and the [elected] members. As part of this further consultation, the matter of implementing the one-way system will be addressed.”

| By Sean Moriarty One resident, Ruth Moram, has made a formal complaint to Gardai and school principals after she says she was verbally abused by a parent collecting children from school. The New Road area has become a traffic blackspot with several complaints in recent years over people parking cars on footpaths, double parking and other problems. Several solutions have been put forward, including the deployment of a traffic warden in the area to monitor inconsiderate parking. The problems are even worse for local residents who have to endure gridlock every morning and evening at school drop off and collection times. Ms Moram said that she's so sick of it that she has filed a complaint with Gardai and

dents,” added Ruth. Meanwhile, following Ms Moram's letter to Killarney Gardai, she has been informed that various stakeholders will meet to discuss some proposals. Gardai are concerned that emergency vehicles will not be able to access the street at peak times.

often leave their engines running. Some will turn their engines off if asked, others are abusive.” Her neighbour, who did not wish to be named as she lives alone, says she too feels intimidated. Both ladies stressed that they understood parents' needs to collect and dropoff children at school times.

End of an era as last two nuns leave Presentation Convent This week marks the end of an era as the last two remaining Sisters have departed Presentation Convent in Killarney for the last time. For nearly 230 years, since the first two Sisters arrived in 1793 to establish a convent and school, the Presentation Sisters have played an important role, educating, and supporting those in need in Killarney. It was the first community of Presentation Sisters outside of the founding community in Cork, and their mission was to expand and continue the work of

their founder Nano Nagle, which was to provide education to Catholic children, which was forbidden at the time by the Penal Laws. In 1800 a primary school was established, and by 1826 over 350 pupils were enrolled. In 1875 the current Presentation Convent was built. The three-storey building includes a sixbay double height Gothic Revival style chapel and is of significant historical importance and is a listed building, with many of the original features of the building both internally and externally still in-

Publican welcomes midnight closure | By Sean Moriarty One Killarney publican is preparing for a very different New Year’s Eve following the latest Government restrictions announced this week.

TRAVEL ACADEMY: Der Touristik, a major German tour operator and the largest tour operator from Mainland Europe to the island of Ireland, has announced it will host its prestigious annual travel academy in Killarney, in April 2022. Pictured are: Nadine Lehmann (Tourism Ireland Manager Germany), Kevin Keogh (Der Touristik), Niall Gibbons (Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland), Dino Steinkamp (Der Touristik), Paul Kelly (Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland), and Louise Finnegan (Tourism Ireland). Killarney successful in winning highprofile event

On Tuesday evening, Taoiseach Micheál Martin told the country that pubs, restaurants and nightclubs would have to close at 12 midnight in an effort to curb the growing number of COVID-19 numbers in the country. The new rules came into effect last night (Thursday). The move comes less than one month after nightclubs were allowed reopen and pubs reverted to traditional closing times of 12.30am on weekends. John Cronin of the Sportsman's Bar on High St welcomed the move. “I think they made the right decision,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It has spread like wildfire once the nightclubs reopened - it is common sense – they are

trying to control it. We are looking at a long run of it, maybe next March or April, until everyone gets vaccinated we are banging our heads off a stone wall.” Despite welcoming the decision, Mr Cronin has already lost business on foot of the new restrictions. As well as his landmark pub he also offers lodgings to visitors in the upstairs portion of the pub. “I already had cancellations for this weekend and I expect more to come,” he added.

NEW YEAR’S EVE

With the new rules in place Mr Cronin said New Year’s Eve will be a very different prospect this year. Instead of welcoming in 2022 on the stroke of midnight and starting a party, he will be faced with closing his bar and sending customers home. “New Year’s is out of the question,” he added, “5,4,3,2, - go home and celebrate…!”

Influential travel journalists and 200 travel agents are bound for Killarney next year as the town has been successful in its bid to host the prestigious German DER Touristik Academy. Killarney beat off challenges from a number of other top destinations to host the 2022 event. Germany’s largest tour operator, DERTOUR, will host the event in the INEC between April 3 to 6, 2022. The Academy is an educational and incentive event run by one of the largest tour operators in Mainland Europe. This is the first overseas event by DER Touristik, Germany, since COVID-19 and is being supported by Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and Limerick Travel. The team from DER Touristik were in Killarney on Tuesday to meet with Irish tourism providers in both accommodation, activities and attractions to learn more of how they can become part of this event with the German operator in 2022. While the DERTOUR gathering is taking place in Killarney next year, the 200 attendees will participate in pre-academy tours across Ireland, organised by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Limerick Travel. The tours present a valuable opportunity for the Irish tourism industry to sell itself to the German market and allows Fáilte Ireland to showcase the best that Ireland has to offer throughout the country. Paul Keeley, Fáilte Ireland’s Director of Regional Development, believes events like these can provide a valuable opportunity to showcase all that Ireland has to offer to one of Ireland's most important mainland European markets.

“We are delighted to welcome DER Touristik to Killarney ahead of hosting this important event next April," Mr Keeley said. "For Irish tourism to recover and grow in the long term it is imperative that there is a strong message that Ireland offers a high-quality experience, diverse tourism experiences and a wide selection of safe accommodation choices. By winning the opportunity to host these influential agents and journalists next April we can continue to drive long term demand for Ireland and ensure that they can confidently encourage their customers to choose Ireland as a holiday destination when they return to Germany." Kevin Keogh, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing for Der Touristik, added; “As the market leader for tourism from Germany to the island of Ireland for over 50 years, DER Touristik is delighted to bring its 200 top travel agents to Ireland for our 2022 Academy and to encourage them the discover the destination.” Peter Brazil, Director, Limerick Travel, commented: “We are delighted to bring Germany’s top tour operator Dertouristik to Killarney for Reise academy 2022! It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our wonderful island to over 200 leading German agents and press. From previous experience academies have dramatically increased German visitors to Ireland in subsequent years.”

CLOSING TIME: John Cronin welcomes the new restrictions and is expecting a very different New Year's Eve. Photo: Sean Moriarty

“People can still go out and enjoy themselves” – Killarney publican | By Sean Moriarty "People can still go out and enjoy themselves", that is the message from one Killarney publican who was reacting to the latest Government restrictions announced this week. Paudie O’Callaghan runs the Fáilte Bar and Hotel on College St. “People can still come out and enjoy themselves," he said. "This won’t really effect us now. Nobody knows what is coming down the track, I gave up trying to predict this thing a long time ago.” The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) has also confirmed that the new closing time restriction applies to hotel bars and all events being hosted, including weddings, whether guests are residents or not.

Mission Road pedestrian crossing on the long finger | By Sean Moriarty Hopes of a new pedestrian crossing on Mission Road have been put on the long finger by Kerry County Council.

MEMORY TREE: The ninth annual Killarney Memory Tree is almost ready to be switched on. Pictured are school principal, Ursula Coffey, with pupils Evie Spillane, Sophie Hussey and Clodagh Blennerhassett.

School prepares to switch on annual Memory Tree

It's a popular town tradition and it's back again this year, the annual Killarney Memory Tree. | By Michelle Crean The official 'Switch On' of the ninth Holy Cross Mercy School Memory Tree will take place on New Road, Killarney on Thursday, December 2 at 7pm. And this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions it will be held in a similar way to last year. The Memory Tree will be lit nightly during the Christmas season until January 6, The Feast of The Epiphany. "Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the much anticipated rituals associated with our Memory Tree will be in a similar format to last year, for that reason we are still online!" said school principal, Ursula Coffey. "We will have an online shop www. mercyholycross.ie to purchase lights on our school website as well as a virtual “switch on” night. In addition as always, lights are available for purchase from all school pupils and staff members. Lights can be ordered in memory of a loved

one for a suggested donation of €5. All proceeds are in aid of Holy Cross Mercy School, Killarney." Those being commemorated by the Memory Tree will be remembered in a live streamed Holy Sacrifice Mass at 1.15pm on Thursday, December 17 in St Mary’s Cathedral. "All are welcome to join us online via the Killarney Parish Webcam on www.killarneyparish.com. We thank everyone who has supported this initiative in the past as it is an extremely important fundraiser for our school." All are welcome to visit the tree while maintaining a safe distance from one another in accordance with the COVID-19 safety guidelines, she added. "Please look on www.mercyholycross. ie or contact 064 6631241 for further information. Keep an eye on our social media for further details of the switch on event and the live streamed Mass. Thank you for your support."

There have been repeated calls by elected councillors to construct such a crossing to allow pedestrians safe access to Killarney House from the New St and Beech Road car parks. At the most recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr John O’Donoghue asked if: “there a reasonable possibility that by next summer there will be a pedestrian crossing on Mission Road?” A Kerry Council official confirmed that a traffic count had been conducted in the area and that the count had determined a

need for a pedestrian crossing. However, construction will not begin on the crossing until works to realign the Muckross Road, the Haha and East Avenue junction are completed. Plans for that project are expected to be revealed next month or in the early part of 2022. “Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have informed the Council that the exact location of any proposed pedestrian crossing would be considered by them after the construction of the Muckross Road and Haha Safety Scheme has been completed,” said the official. “The present situation is very dangerous for all but especially so for older people and for people with disability,” Cllr O’Donoghue added.

Change of venue for Liam O’Connor’s concert Liam O’Connor’s Christmas concert has been moved to St Mary’s Cathedral. The December 8 event was originally set for nearby St Brendan’s College but the venue is unavailable and the concert was transferred to the cathedral instead. Liam recently recorded a new single with Clannad’s legendary vocalist Moya Brennan. Now the pair, and their extended families, will perform at St Mary’s as the first leg of a short pre-Christmas tour that also includes dates in Boherbue Church in Cork on December 9 and Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny on December 10. The idea behind the mini tour was hatched during their recent appearance on RTE’s ‘The Late Late Show’. “Big thanks to Bishop Ray and Fr Kieran who understood our predicament and facilitated the change,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser.

Have your cake and eat it as new Christmas kits launched | By Michelle Crean The arduous chore of Christmas cake making has been made a whole lot simpler thanks to one local socially conscious business who launched their new idea this week.

BEDTIME STORIES: Katie O’Donoghue’s 'Creative Bedtime Stories' will take place online during the month of December.

Katie to comfort kids through online story-time

Staff at the Going Green Cafe and Refill Store on Beech Road will from today (Friday) sell their brand new Christmas Cake Kits for €30 with money received going to support the work they do. Each ingredient has been carefully measured in recycled glasswear, the eggs are fresh from KASI’s gardens in Ballycasheen, and not only that, but the kit comes complete with a recipe, all you have to do is bind it with love. In aiming to generate ongoing income streams to fund their work in the community, KASI, the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre, have established a number of social enterprises including Going Green. The team are helping to promote integration of migrants into Irish society through training, employment and visibility, with a cafe as well as a zero-waste refill store upstairs. The refill store is also proving to have a benefit on society and the environment by helping the people of Killar-

ney cut down on packaging and plastic waste, increase the re-use of glass and plastic containers and introducing more eco-conscious habits into their daily lives. The unique atmosphere at Going Green is quickly garnering a loyal customer base of socially conscious communities supporting this innovative social enterprise business model. “We are conscious of the need for our collective response to the climate and ecological crisis worldwide, and our social enterprise Going Green is giving the people of Killarney an opportunity to think global but act local in supporting the Christmas Cake Kit," Marilyn Catapat-Counihan, KASI coordinator, said. "We are so excited to welcome the local community on this journey towards going green and supporting the migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in our locality." And she added that they have taken the hard work, packaging waste and excess cost out of shopping for our customers and supporters. "We have sourced the majority of the ingredients for the kit from our refill store, upstairs at Going Green. Why not drop by for a coffee while you pick up your Christmas Cake Kit!"

A Killarney author will read her inspiring children's book in a free online library event next month to bring comfort to kids at bedtime. | By Michelle Crean As part of the 'Right to Read' national initiative to promote literacy and reading development, Katie O'Donoghue, who penned her children's debut novel ‘The Little Squirrel Who Worried’, will take part in the Kerry Library event. Katie, along with author Roisin Meaney, will do four live Bedtime Storytelling events each on select evenings. It is envisaged that families will cuddle up for bedtime stories together at a time when young children would be settling down for the night anyway. Families can attend as many of these events as they wish. Katie O’Donoghue’s 'Creative Bedtime Stories' sessions will take place on Friday, December 3, Monday December 6 and 13, and Tuesday December 14 at 7pm. “I am incredibly excited,” Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. “I will be facilitating two therapeutic and creative storytelling sessions inspired by my book, ‘The Little Squirrel Who Worried’. Just as squirrels store their nuts for the long winter I hope this workshop will help children store skills to comfort and guide them in difficult times. Furthermore, I am hoping to help families get into the festive spirit with two in-

spired Christmas book sessions. I look forward to meeting all the boys and girls along with their loved ones in the coming month. I would also like to thank Kerry Library and their wonderful librarians for the opportunity and support. The amazing work they are doing, and continue to do, has been so important for the well-being of the children and the communities in Kerry.” Roisin Meaney’s 'Cuddle up Bedtime Stories' will take place on Tuesday, December 7, Wednesday 8, Thursday 9 and Friday 10 December at 7pm. Artist Lisa Fingleton from Ballybunion will host a live 'Wild Child' creative nature and drawing workshop on Saturday December 11, at 11am. Beginner yoga and pilates classes, which will be pre-recorded for families, will be available throughout the month of December on the Kerry Library website so it can be enjoyed at any time of the month. Booking for the Roisin Meaney and Katie O'Donoghue events is available from November 22. However, people can still register for the reminders. Booking for the Lisa Fingleton event opens on December 1. Booking is via www.kerrylibrary.ie/ family-time-at-your-library.html.

PUBLISHED: Killarney writer Mairéad O'Sullivan's poem ‘Graveside Rain May 2021’ has been published in an anthology called 'Local Wonders'.

Local writer included in new poetry anthology Killarney writer Mairéad O'Sullivan was thrilled to hear that her poem ‘Graveside Rain May 2021’ is to be included in an anthology of poems concerning our engagement with our surroundings. Her work, which was inspired during the funeral of her uncle, has been published in 'Local Wonders' which is available in bookshops and online from this week. "I’m very excited to be included in this publication among so many brilliant poets, including Paula Meehan and Gabriel Rosenstock," she said. "My poem was inspired by the torrential rain at the funeral of my uncle, and how rain can be seen as a positive force, especially in agriculture, and my uncle was

a farmer." She added that it's an idea that she's interested in academically as well. "I have an MA in Anthropology and Development from Maynooth University and I did my thesis on food and agriculture, focusing particularly on current conversations around conservation, sustainability, and locality, and how people engage with these ideas. That said, poems have an emotional impulse, and I think I had to make the rain make sense. I felt it couldn’t rain that much for no reason, especially at a funeral. It’s a way of looking at the world, I suppose, and trying to pay your respects in the way that you can." ‘Local Wonders’, published by Dedalus Press and edited by Pat Boran, is available from dedaluspress.com and bookshops.

Killarney Safe Streets cost almost €160k | By Sean Moriarty The Safe Streets programme, to allow for social distancing on the town's streets during the height of the pandemic, has cost €158,953. The measures were introduced to town centres in the summer of 2020 and the Killarney figure is much higher than the combined costs of the other four Municipal Districts. The total figure follows two different rounds of funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA). In the first round in July 2020, Killarney spent €149,479 and second round of

funding totalling €9,474 was received under the Additional Outdoor Infrastructure Scheme bringing Killarney’s total to €158,953. This compares to the €38,081 spent in the Tralee Municipal District. A total of €55,075 was spent in the Kenmare District, and €67,535 in the Listowel District. Killarney was the most expensive Safe Streets programme in the county, and came in at one third over the total cost of the second most expensive district – Castleisland/Corca Dhuibhne - which cost €106,460 and includes both Castleisland and Dingle town centres. A Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, Brendan Cronin, who

is elected in the Killarney Municipal area, asked for a breakdown of the total amount of money spent by the Council “for each Municipal District on street and footpath alterations, buildout costs, bollards etc”. A Council official explained that Kerry County Council commenced its “Safe and Welcoming Streets – Town Mobility Plans’ in May 2020. “The physical infrastructure required to implement these plans included the provision of footpath widening, buildouts and bollards and the like,” the official told the meeting. “The Council received grant assistance from the NTA for their mobility plans.”

Local Macra in line for national award Not even a pandemic could stop a local group from continuing their connection and now, thanks to their hard work, the club are in line for a national award. | By Michelle Crean Killarney Macra, who hosted many virtual meetings, remote coffee mornings, online quizzes as well as socially distanced hikes and walks, are hoping to be named Club of the Year after reaching the national final. The competition is designed to encourage clubs to be dynamic and active, rewarding their achievements and contributions at both a local and a national level. Committee members Edmund McSweeney, Robert Lucey, Siobhan Deering and Ryan Jones were interviewed remotely last August where they described how successful and vibrant their club has been over the years and in particular how they have dealt with the COVID restrictions. "In the past year or so we have held many virtual online meetings, coffee mornings where our members would gather for chats remotely, online quizzes as well as some socially distanced hikes and walks," Conor Brosnan, joint PRO of Killarney Macra, told the Killar-

ney Advertiser. "Recently when restrictions lifted we had our first social outing at the Caddy Shack in Killarney where we played some mini-golf and enjoyed some food and drinks together. COVID restrictions have been difficult compared to how sociable our members were prior to the restrictions however, we have done our best to ensure that all our members are regularly contacted and kept up to date with what's going on and have encouraged the members as much as possible to stay in contact and attend any activities we've held, be it online or in person. We have even gained some new members during the pandemic which is fantastic and we are very hopeful once those restrictions lift that our club will continue to grow and flourish." Some of the committee members will have to do another virtual interview with the judges and showcase the club with a possible presentation, he added. "The date and exact content of what will be required is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to take place before Christmas."

NATIONAL FINAL: Killarney Macra Club members Edmund McSweeney (Chairperson), Emma Cronin (joint PRO), Robert Lucey (Secretary), John Doyle, Neil Desmond and Darragh Hayes are thrilled to be in the national final for Club of the Year.

SURVEY: Gardai assisted Nationwide Data Collection officials on two approach roads to Killarney this week.

Motorists interviewed for new road survey | By Sean Moriarty

Key data that will help both Kerry County Council and the National Roads Design Office make decisions on the preferred route for the new Farranfore to Killarney road was gathered this week in two separate locations. On Wednesday motorists travelling between Killarney and Farranfore were interviewed just outside the village by consultants from the Nationwide Data Collection (NDC). NDC also conducted the same survey on Tuesday in the Lissivigeen area. Both surveys lasted 24 hours from 7am

each day with motorists channelled into a checkpoint style road block. With the assistance of an Garda Síochána, Nationwide Data Collection were able to ask questions of motorists. “The surveys are underway this week and do entail being interviewed by our consultants," said a Kerry County Council spokesperson. "The Gardai are present at the interview locations for increased traffic management purposes. The purpose of the interview is to gather trip information from the passing vehicles to inform the traffic modellers about the typical trips taken by the vehicles in the survey area. This information will feed into the planning process for the new road.”

Residents not 'Lovin it' as McDonalds causes traffic problems | By Sean Moriarty A Kerry County Council traffic warden is to monitor traffic on the lower Park Road following a series of complaints about traffic queueing for the nearby McDonalds restaurant. At the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr Donal Grady called for action to be taken in the area “as entry to homes is being blocked off”. He was the second councillor to raise concerns about traffic in the area follow-

ing Marie Moloney's similar motion in September. “Following concerns raised by members in previous Notices of Motion, the Council has met with Management of McDonalds and have liaised with An Garda Síochána in relation to traffic queuing and illegal parking at times at this location,” a Council official told the meeting. “It is intended to extend and increase the visibility of road markings which would be more appropriate than clearway signs. Kerry County Council Traffic Wardens will monitor and if required, enforce any illegal parking at this location.”

RTÉ viewers were blown away by the classical voice of a local singer on Saturday night, but sadly Killarney's Grace Foley didn't make it through to the next stage. | By Michelle Crean Grace appeared on RTÉ One's 'Last Singer Standing', and she had some serious competition by opting to go up against drag act Dame Stuffy. Grace's classical version of Elton's John's 'Your Song' proved very popular but it wasn't enough to secure the audience vote as Dame Stuffy, who sang 'I'm Still Standing', by the same singer, made it through with 62 percent and on to the show's grand final. However, Grace, who is launching her brand-new album, 'Unmasked', in the International Hotel Killarney on November 28 at 8pm, is not disappointed, in fact she told the Killarney Advertiser that she's so proud of her performance and delighted with the phenomenal public support since appearing. "Watching myself perform on national TV on Saturday was a crazy experience!," she said.

NERVOUS

"I knew how it all would go, and yet, I felt very nervous. On the day of recording, I had felt a very different kind of 'nervous'. I had no idea how it would all go, but I was excited. After recording, I felt like I had won the whole show! I floated

I felt I had sung well, but you just never know how you'll come across on TV!" She said that she had sweaty palms when she tuned in on Saturday. "I remembered the intense emotion of it all. It was amazing for my family to finally see what I had experienced. What I didn't expect, and what has really really touched me, is the outpouring of county/parish/Ross Road pride! I didn't even

Marie's "labour of love" almost ready to hit the shelves | By Michelle Crean It's been a labour of love during lockdown and now it's almost ready to hit the shelves - the much anticipated new book by local photographer Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan. 'Killarney Behind the Mask' will be launched in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Sunday, December 19 from 3pm to 6pm and copies will be available on the day. The 360-page hardback, coffee table style book charts the stories of ordinary men, women and children whose lives were turned upside down during the pandemic. Marie made it her business to photograph and chat to as many local people as possible, initially within her 2km travel limit and later further afield to

the actual faces behind the masks of the COVID ward at UHK, to chronicle how they all dealt with the pandemic. Such was the massively positive and enthusiastic reaction her efforts received on social media channels 'The Little Memory Gallery', Marie decided to take it one step further and opted to publish it in book form to raise funds for local charities including the Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society and Pieta House-Nathan’s Walk. Marie also decided to donate part of the proceeds to purchase pampering gifts for the under pressure COVID-19 staff at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) who put themselves at real risk to help others every day of the week. The book features hundreds of interviews and photographs with local personalities, business interests, families, employers and employees, sports stars

"Everyone who attends will be treated to complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres from 7.30pm. I feel this album truly has something for everyone. From Danny Boy to Whitney Houston and a song that has been given the Phil Coulter stamp of approval, this is a creation I am very, very proud of."

The only daily task in the early months of the pandemic was who would I visit tomorrow. “With all of my encounters on file, I really felt it was my duty to Killarney and its wonderful people to document this in a time capsule for future generations, a history book so to speak. Thank you to everyone who humoured me by smiling down my lens, keeping the bright side out, even in hard times, and for allowing me to share their stories." The book, which will be a real collector’s item, will retail at €35 and it will be available from December 20, at Eason on Main Street, O’Connor’s Newsagents on Beech Road, Bricín on High Street and Kerry Catering Supplies at the Countess Shopping Centre.

It also charts the incredible sacrifices made by so many, the unprecedented pressure encountered by staff in the COVID ward at University Hospital Kerry, how Kerry’s oldest man adjusted to the new circumstances, how parents of babies born during lockdown coped and how neighbours and friends reached out like never before to those needing a little extra support.

Another gold medal for Killarney Tidy Towns Killarney has won another gold medal in this year's SuperValu Tidy Towns competition after being awarded 352 points in the large town category F and named as the highest scoring location in the county. Tralee, Kenmare, and Listowel were also awarded gold medals while Ennis, Co. Clare was named as Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2021 from 847 entries in the competition this year. The Tidy Towns competition has been in existence since 1958 and in their report, Tidy Towns judges said that "Litter control and tidiness is always a concern with high

levels of footfall, and on the day of adjudication the town was generally free from litter, which is a credit to all involved". "Footpaths were clean and the addition of some re-surfacing has made a difference to busy areas. The many residential houses and estates were all presented to a high standard and a credit to the residents. A few vacant premises have undergone

freshening and brightening. Approach roads were good and well presented with trees and landscaping, with areas left for wildlife. Traffic was heavy and congested in areas. Well done on this year’s entry and presentation."

A WONDERFUL BOOST

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney has congratulated all of the Kerry winners and participants in this year’s Tidy Towns Competition. Killarney Chamber President, Niall Kelleher described the town’s accolade as

19.11.2021 "hugely impressive" and "a wonderful boost" especially as Killarney town was just three points behind the overall winner. “This result is a fairer reflection of the outstanding ongoing work led by the dedicated management and outdoor staff of Kerry County Council. Without their input, our town would not maintain such a high ranking,” Mr Kelleher said. “The input from residents, Tidy Towns volunteers and the commercial interests was well reflected and highly commended in the adjudication. No other county in Ireland has managed to achieve so much success at county level and it reflects the commitment by Council management and staff and the 35 different Tidy Towns committees within the county,” he added. Killarney won the prestigious overall award in 2011 and, following this year’s performance, confidence is growing that a second overall win is not far away.

Kerry Alternative Prehospital Pathway (KAPP) KAPP is a new initiative between the National Ambulance Service and UHK Emergency Department to bring care in to the community. The aim of this service would be to treat low acuity ambulance calls in the community and aim to treat and discharge on the scene rather than transporting the patient to the Emergency Department. Examples of appropriate calls would be minor injuries & wounds, urinary catheter issues, seizures, low velocity road traffic collisions (RTCs), minor falls (patient mobilizing) or any patient that an ambulance crew feel can benefit from the KAPP initiative. So if a patient calls an ambulance there might be an alternative solution coming their way.

Always Call 112/999 In Case Of Emergency

• Our dedicated vehicle will be staffed by an ED Registrar and Paramedic. • Operational Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 17:00pm. • The team will respond to certain 112/999 calls within a 25km radius from UHK and treat the patients on scene. • If appropriate the patient would be discharged, with some cases following up with their GP. If unwell the patient would be transported by an ambulance to hospital.

Kerry charity shortlisted for two national volunteer awards A Kerry charity has been shortlisted in two categories at this year’s Volunteer Ireland Awards, which take place in December. Tralee’s Noreen O’Flaherty, who has been with cancer support charity, Recovery Haven since its inception in 2010, is among the three finalists in the Health and Well-being category, while the charity’s entire volunteer team has also made the top three in the ‘Larger Group’ category. The esteemed awards shine a light on the remarkable achievements of volunteers around the country by honouring them at a national level. Noreen was selected for her selfless commitment to the charity for the past 10 years, not only as a key member of the gardening group and valued volunteer listener, but as a trained programme facilitator for the ‘Thrive

Affiliated with

and Survive’ programme, undertaking training and subsequently delivering 10 six-week programmes to Recovery Haven clients. She also undertook training to deliver the ‘Building Better Caregivers’ programme in 2020, aimed at supporting those caring for a loved one with cancer. All this is done on a voluntary basis, in addition to Noreen’s hands-on work in the charity’s garden and in the house itself. The second nomination is for the charity’s entire team of volunteers, who are an integral cog in the Recovery Haven Kerry wheel. This includes the charity’s volunteer listeners, therapists, gardeners, fundraisers and board members. At the height of COVID-19 restrictions, the charity’s volunteer listeners came together to provide a phone support service for clients who could not visit Recovery Haven due to lockdown, making over 2,000 phone calls since

March 2020. Recovery Haven Kerry Manager Siobhan MacSweeney described the volunteers as the lifeblood of the organisation who, she said, keeps Recovery Haven’s heart pumping and full of vitality. “For the past decade, I have had the pleasure of spending time on a daily basis with members of our volunteering groups. The simple truth is that we would not be able to deliver our services without them. We depend on them, we need them and they give us so much more that we can ever give them. They say volunteers aren’t paid because they are priceless, and we could not afford all that they give. Each volunteer, their skills and time make up a large part of Recovery Haven, so I am delighted with this acknowledgement for all our volunteers.”

Ploughing match scheduled for Sunday | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Ploughing is hosting its annual Ploughing competitions this coming Sunday.

ROAD RUN: Cleaning Doctor Donal O'Sullivan with the Ford Raptor he will use in the Cannonball 4X4 event this weekend.

A top quality entry is expected for the final – including an entry from County Antrim – and the local class winners will get to represent Killarney at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska

County Laois from September 20 to 22 next year. The event will take place at Coffey’s Farm Fossa from 11am to 4pm. “Spectators are welcome to attend but social distancing and COVID-19 regulations must be followed,” chairman Tom Wharton told the Killarney Advertiser. “One unusual thing to look out for is we have three horse teams entered.”

Donal O’Sullivan, Killarney’s Cleaning Doctor, is all set to take part in the all-new Cannonball 4X4 which will overnight at the Great Southern Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty Donal has teamed with Ryan Doherty of Cleaning Doctor Sligo and they will drive a Ford Raptor on the event while raising funds for the HOPE Foundation. It was a last minute decision for the team to enter the first 4X4 Cannonball in Ireland and they only learned on Tuesday that they had secured a place on the starters list. The road run will leave Powerscourt Hotel in County Wicklow this morning (Friday) and travel through the Wicklow Mountains before a lunch-halt at the recently-restored Castle Durrow Country House Hotel in County Laois. The convoy, which will include such exotic machinery like a Bentley Bentayga First Edition, a Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, Range Rovers and BMW X5 M-Sport, will

arrive at the Great Southern Killarney this evening around 5pm for the first of two overnight halts. Tomorrow (Saturday), the drivers will explore the Ring of Kerry, Dromquinna Manor, The Black Valley, Gap of Dunloe and public roads within Killarney National Park. “Every year I try and do something for charity but the last two years have proven very difficult to organise any events,” Donal told the Killarney Advertiser. “With the Cannonball 4x4 overland adventure coming to my home town I decided on a last minute entry to take part in the event and help raise funds for HOPE Foundation.” Donal's fundraiser can be found on GoFundMe: 'CLEANING DOCTOR HOPE foundation CANNONBALL 4X4'.

Cllr Niall Kelleher, who is also the president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, raised concerns about the number of bins in Killarney town centre. He is unhappy following a survey by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) which shows that Killarney is clean to Europe-

The results of the survey were released last month and Mr Kelleher raised the matter at last week’s Killarney Municipal meeting. “People are disposing household litter in the town centre,” he told the meeting. There are currently 47 public litter bins located within the Killarney Town Centre according to Kerry County Council officials. In 2019, when the bins were last surveyed, there were 43 public litter bins.

John Evans, songwriter, explained the inspiration behind the song. “The song celebrates Christmas and that familiar Christmas feeling, but reminds us that

we shouldn’t take it for granted. Unfortunately, ‘food on every table and presents by each tree’ will not be a reality for the hundreds of families in Ireland who don’t have a place to call home this Christmas. “Partnering with Peter McVerry Trust to raise money for their family homeless services feels like the perfect fit for this song. We hope to raise enough money to make this a special Christmas for the families, especially the children, who are living in their services.”

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Navigating the Christmas season It is so simple to get swept up in the holiday season! It is my favourite time of the year and if I could I would have the decorations up in early November! Christmas and New Year are widely associated with indulgence, the mix of social and national celebrations can help keep our typically cold winter at bay but can lead to a strain on our waistlines. How many of us start January with the best of intentions hoping to go on a ‘diet’ that will undo the excess of our partying from the previous few weeks! Did you know that four or five sweets from those holiday tins contain around 200 calories? And let us be honest, who stops at this? You don’t need to deprive yourself or eat only boring foods or to accompany your treats with a side order of guilt - but you do need a plan! Pay attention to what really matters. Although food is an important part of the holidays, put your main focus on family and friends. If your eating habits are balanced throughout the year, it’s okay to indulge once in a while. You get to choose what this will be, don’t get drawn into the hype. One way to cut through the marketing that surrounds us at Christmas and that tries to draw us in is to set a rule; if the food or drink is available all year round, leave it. Just because it’s packaged differently it is still the same! However, if it is a family recipe with the most amazing memories attached i.e. Gran’s stuffing or a traditional dessert or cake, enjoy every mouthful, get involved in the making of it so in time you too can hand this family recipe down. Cherish this experience.

PORTION CONTROL

If you are going to house parties be sure to eat before you go, prioritising a balanced snack containing protein, carbs and healthy fats. It takes a bit of time for your stomach to signal your brain. Have a chat, drink some water, wait a good 20 minutes before going back for seconds. It takes this long for your brain to register that you are full. Get savvy about portion control. This is the biggest problem over the festive season. It is almost expected of us to overeat! Research has shown the bigger the portion the more you will eat. Focus

on the first few bites, it is better to have a smaller portion of high-quality food. Drink at least two to three litres of water every day to stay well hydrated. If you drink alcohol, have a glass of water in between drinks.

MOVE MORE

Get out and move every day. We are blessed here in Kerry to have so many places to choose from and that all ages can enjoy. A family walk after a particularly filling meal or late night can be brilliant for shaking off the cobwebs. Meet up for coffee instead of pints. It is never about what you are drinking but who you are with, and again we have some amazing coffee spots to indulge in. Try to stay to your usual routine and continue to have your three regular meals a day, this will in turn help naturally reduce the serving sizes of your celebratory meals with family and friends.

Kerry family to take park in Remembrance Service Thousands of organ donor families, including one from Kerry, and grateful transplant recipients will tune in to watch the Irish Kidney Association’s 36th Annual Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving this Sunday. The pre-recorded interfaith service will be broadcast on RTÉ News Channel and Live on RTÉ Player at 2.15pm coinciding with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims and the month of All Saints. Four of the eight donor families who participated in the filming of the ‘virtual’ service, which was recorded at Merrion Road Church in Dublin 4, remember their loved ones who became organ donors following fatal road traffic incidents. From Kerry, Patrick Shanahan and Mary Dillon, the husband and sister of a road traffic victim and organ donor, will bring forget-me-not flower emblems, the Irish Kidney Association’s symbol of transplantation, to the altar. The late Siobhan Shanahan, née Brosnan, a native of Ballybunion, and late of Adare, Co Limerick, passed away in April this year, had worked as an Organ Donor Manager at University Hospital Limerick supporting grieving families in their decision to donate. It is the second year in a row for the event to be held virtually and pre-recorded by Kairos Communications, due to safety

At last year’s first ‘virtual’ service, 64,000 households nationwide tuned in to watch its first viewing on RTÉ and it was streamed in 24 other countries. The Irish Kidney Association is asking the public to actively participate in this years’ service, especially during the very symbolic Service of Light Ceremony, when it is hoped that in households the length and breadth of the country, and beyond,

a candle will be lit in memory of deceased donors who gave the gift of life. A letter by President of Ireland Michael D. New Delhi locks down due to smog pollution India has shut down its capital city this week - not due to COVID this time - but because levels of smog have reached new dangerous levels. India's capital city New Delhi, has closed schools, is urging people to work from home, and has even banned non-essential trucks from entering the city. Every winter smog pollution is a huge concern but this year's levels have reached a new extreme.

The World Health Organization (WHO) designates the safe level for the tiny, poisonous particles at 25. Over the past few days there has been some improvement in New Delhi air, however readings of dangerous particles on Wednesday were still as high as seven times the safe level, climbing above 300 micrograms per cubic metre in some parts of the city. Forecasters have warned that the air quality could worsen before the arrival of cold winds next week which will blow away the

It's definitely not a typical act of charity but The Fresno Mission in California not only wanted to break the record but also donate the socks to the homeless. Volunteers and staff had a plan to create a line of socks stretching at least seven miles long while also raising awareness about homelessness. "We looked around, like, 'Hey, we're lacking certain things and one of them was socks, which is really a tool for us so, we said, 'Hey what if we did a sock drive? And hey what if we did something really cool and break the world record?'," Fresno Mission CEO Matthew Dildine said. It took approximately six months to gather that amount of socks which they then put on a clothes line covering a total distance of 7.39 miles. The current record listed by Guinness is 3.77 miles, and was assembled in Halverde, Germany, in 2014. smog. Concerned residents feel that their Government is not doing enough to help. “Shutting down the city will not end the pollution,” New Delhi shop owner, Suresh Chand Jain, said, adding that the authorities need to introduce stricter regulations aimed at limiting car use and controlling the burning of crop residues in neighbouring States, emissions of which contribute hugely to the capital’s bad air quality. However, experts have said that such emergency measures will not work in the long run. “These are done only to ensure that you don’t worsen the situation, that you shave off the peak. But it is not a silver bullet that is going to just clean the air immediately,” said Roychowdhury.

SAFER NIGHTS OUT: Minister Helen McEntee was among those who helped launch the 'Safer Nights Out' campaign in Tralee.

Safer nights out campaign launched A new campaign has been launched to make it safer for people on nights out. Minister Helen McEntee was among those who helped launch the 'Safer Nights Out' campaign by the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre which is supported by MTU Kerry Students' Union. Gardaí in collaboration with Tralee Chamber, Tralee Vintners and Tralee Taxi Association, launched the 'Ask for Angela' in pubs and clubs which will also be extended to taxis for a safer night out, 'Taxi Text' which allows taxis to easily report anti-social behaviour and other activity to Gardaí, and 'SafeHome' - the distribution of hi-viz jackets to urban and rural pubs for customers who walk home at night. "People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or

threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue/taxi staff and asking them for 'Angela'," Manager of the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre, Vera O'Leary who lives in Killarney, said. "This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them." Participating venues will have the 'Ask for Angela' poster in the toilets or elsewhere in the venue, explaining what to do and how they can help. Bar staff will also have information on how to respond when someone 'Asks for Angela'. "The initiatives are examples of our community working together to keep people safe. The hope is to launch this initiative across the country.”

On the back of the phenomenal success of last year’s competition, Audiology Medical Services launched their nationwide Online Christmas Carol School Competition, with a prize of €2,000 for the winning school, chosen by the public. Last year, the competition was deservedly won by Cara Junior School from Banduff in Cork following their rendition of ‘Let it Snow’. Cara Junior School scooped the impressive €1,000 prize, winning by the minutest margins of just 0.5% of the votes after a staggering 18,500 public votes were made for all finalists selected. “We were blown away with the popularity of last year’s competition, so running our Christmas Carol Competition again this year was a no brainer," Kay Lewis, Chief Operating Officer of Audiology Medical Service, said. "We also made the decision to double the prize money for the winning school, so we are hoping for even more entries than the 150 or so from last year.” The competition is open to all primary

The award provides international recognition and is the mark of a quality park or green space and is recognised throughout the world. They are judged every year by a peer jury of green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement. Ireland was awarded a total of 103 Green Flag sites, comprised of 84 formal public Green Flag Park sites, along with 19 volunteer run Green Community Sites. This year over 2,300 public sites in 16 countries around the world have

schools across the country and entering is simple. Teachers just need to email a video or link of their class singing their favourite Christmas Carol to Audiology Medical Services. A panel of judges will then select the finalists from all entrants, with bonus points given to any class that includes Lámh or sign language in their video. Finalists will then go forward to an online public vote to decide the winner of the €2,000 prize. And, if singing a Christmas Carol doesn’t suit, students can also enter Audiology Medical Services Festive Colouring Competition. Children aged between four and 12 years of age have a choice of three Christmas designs for a chance to win a €100 shopping voucher. Designs can be downloaded on the Audiology Medical Services website. Full details on how to enter both competitions, along with terms and conditions, and downloadable consent form are available on www.audiologymedicalservices.ie. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Head Chef named Irish ambassador Give the gift of beauty of Fair Kitchens Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Christmas is just around the corner and supporting local small businesses is more essential than ever. Your local beauty salon isn't on a container ship coming from across the world. Giving the gift of a voucher is a fabulous way of treating someone special to something they may not get for themselves; a pampering treatment they will remember. I often ask the receiver of the vouchers did they like getting it as a gift. They always reply, with a yes! By buying it for an amount of money as opposed to a particular treatment it allows the person to get the treatment they would most enjoy. Also giving a voucher is kinder to the environment as it won't be an unwanted gift. Even if you give a small amount it will be going towards something they really wanted. There is less packaging, all of which is more important than ever since COP26. Also, if you would like to

call the salon to buy one, we can post it out. Would you rather have one amazing present, than five rubbish ones? Vouchers can be used on skincare or make-up products and services or treatments. Therefore you can be sure that your loved one will truly like the gift. It also forces them to treat themselves! Truly giving someone the gift of choice, you might be tempted to just give cash. As we all know life can get in the way and it can be hard to use the money to treat yourself even if you are instructed to do so. A gift card means loved ones will have to treat themselves. There is no one in the world, especially after the last two years, that doesn't need a relaxing massage, deep cleansing facial, a manicure or pedicure. If you have any questions call Jill on 064 6632966.

The Head Chef of a popular Killarney hotel has been appointed as the Irish ambassador of a global food movement which seeks to drive change in the industry. Chad Byrne, who works in the Brehon Hotel, is thrilled to lead the new role for Fair Kitchens to help change in the food and hospitality industry. "The movement optimises what I value. Change by demonstrating a healthier culture makes for a healthier business, creating a fairer and more inclusive workplace to attract and retain talent for today and the future," Chad told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's an honour that our kitchen policies have been noticed globally. Our retention rates with chefs at the Brehon, our work-life balance structure, investing in our team to grow, and initiatives such as Chef Collab and County Cooking Championships has put us on the map," he said. "But this is also a testament to our owners and our management who encourage these values, without them it's just not possible." Chad explained that he got involved because he understands the importance of respect and inclusion in a kitchen. "You get the best from those around you when you listen to their ideas, respect those ideas, and challenge in a positive way to be the best they can. Generally speaking, I've had a positive experience in my career. I've been lucky to work with, and learn from, some of the best in the business. And I've watched them and how they work with and lead their teams. If you invest your time and energy in others, they'll give it back to you in

"What I look for in my kitchen is energy and enthusiasm so taking the time to make sure your staff are content is crucially important in keeping their loyalty. Work-life balance and having freedom to express yourself and encourage others, that's what Fair Kitchens is about creating a workplace where everyone is respected, they can enjoy their jobs and are allowed to be the best they can."

Phenomenal supports available for new enterprises There are phenomenal supports available for new enterprises through both South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) to give them every chance to succeed. This was the key message for potential new business owners at a showcase event for enterprises set up under the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance Scheme that took place in Killarney re-

cently. It was the first in-person promotional event to be held since the COVID crisis started. Speaking at the event, Owen MacMahon of Weasel Party Hire said that the Back to Work Scheme was a phenomenal support to him and he feels he used the supports very wisely over the two years he was on it. He said he used each and every one of the supports offered to him. “I would advise all start-ups to support each other at events such as this, exchange details, learn from each other and do business with each other,” Owen said.

Among the elements of advice Owen offered for others thinking of starting a new business was to get into good habits from the beginning by getting a good accountant and keeping excellent paperwork. He said that it was worth taking time to make goals, monthly, bi-annually and yearly. Owen added that new businesses should make a plan for the first two years and he encouraged them to plough as much money as possible back into the business and it would pay off. Owen also advised new business owners to take time to research other ideas that

you could add into your business to add value and reach other to similar businesses to ask them how this idea worked for them – especially if they are not in your area and not competitors! Enterprise Officer with SKDP, Joanne Griffin, added that in addition to the supports available through DEASP, SKDP can also provide additional support to startups such as mentoring and training supports in the form of marketing, taxation workshops and entrepreneur mindset workshops.

GARDENMAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Watercress is easy to grow and super nutritious I have recently rekindled my love of cooking – for years it has been an uninspiring rota of 10 meals, all of which were fairly nutritious and healthy but monotonous. However, recently I have given myself a shake and started taking an interest in cooking again. Why am I writing this in a gardening column, you may ask? Two reasons: firstly, I have been asked on a regular basis why I don’t mention fruit and veg so much anymore, and secondly, I am re-appreciating the importance of the afore mentioned fruit and veg. I read somewhere recently that instead on your five-a-day, we now need to consume seven-a-day due to the decrease in soil nutrients as a result of over use. Now, I have found veg growing at home to be time consuming, and, to be honest, if you work full-time, there is only so much you can do. So next spring, I am going to write more about energy and time effective ways of growing your own, and am going to stick with the plan myself too! In the meantime, to get back to my new found culinary interests, an ingredient I am coming across frequently is watercress. I have been substituting spinach and rocket as I cannot find watercress in any supermarket. It is actually an ingredient which grows wild in most countries, and Ireland is no exception. In fact it grows ‘everywhere’ once you start looking. It grows in slow running water so it can be found in springs, at the edge

of rivers and in drains. It is not recommended to use it from the wild as there is a danger of liver fluke. However, I have grown some from seed, and use part of my pond where there is a nice bit of water movement from the pump, and it is growing ‘mad’! It is the most gratifying vegetable I have ever grown. If you do not have a pond or stream, worry not, it can be easily grown in a minimum of soil as long as it never dries out. I am constructing a watercress nursery for myself out of some shallow barrels joined to each other with water butt connectors to my own water butt over-flow – it sounds complicated, but a little bit of engineering versus zero weed picking is worth it! Basically, if you can grow it in a pot which you can stand in a few inches of rain water, you will be able to grow this wonderful greenery! The nutrient content of watercress is awesome, it contains potassium, protein, magnesium, calcium and vitamin C, and is being sold as a superfood these days. It is peppery, but not too strong, and is ideal in salads and soups – it adds a freshness which spinach cannot compete with. There is a lot of research being done into the benefits of watercress, with astounding implications into its use for ailments from nappy rash right through to cancer. So, if you grow nothing else, do give this a try. Basically, if you have a pot which you can stand in a few inches of rain water, you will be able to grow this wonderful greenery!

WINNER: Gearoid Linnane (CEO, Lee Strand) presents €1,000 to Anthony Clifford and his father Pat from Glenbeigh, winners of the Lee Strand Milk Doorstep Challenge on Radio Kerry.

Glenbeigh family are €1,000 richer thanks to Lee Strand

A Glenbeigh family have an extra €1,000 in their pockets - and just in time for the festive season - thanks to Lee Stand's Milk Doorstep Challenge. Anthony Clifford won the sum and was delighted when he and his father Pat collected it from Lee Stand's headquarters in Tralee on Friday afternoon. To celebrate one year since the launch of Lee Strand’s 100% renewable 2 litre cartons, Radio Kerry presenters travelled across the county to see who made the environmental switch and had the 2 litre cartons in their fridge. On lucky day 13, Radio Kerry’s Alan Finn called to the Clifford household in mid-Kerry. “Thanks a million it’s great, we are all big Lee Strand milk drinkers for years and the new 2 litre carton is fantastic

for the environment," Anthony said. Anthony’s father Pat, who is 92 years young, mentioned that he has been drinking plenty of Lee Strand for over 70 years in his tea and recommended it highly to everybody. A total of 14 daily finalists were delighted to receive a hamper full of Lee Strand products when Radio Kerry called to their home. The grand finale took place on Kerry’s Full Breakfast when Andrew Morrissey drew Anthony Clifford’s name. “We were delighted with the return of the Lee Strand Doorstep Challenge on Radio Kerry," Gearoid Linnane, CEO said. "The response has been very positive a year on since we launched our new 2 litre cartons. We would like to thank our customers for their continued support and for making the switch from plastic.”

Toyota roadshow at the Gleneagle on Sunday Kelliher’s Garage – the county’s only Toyota dealership – is holding an open day at the Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday. The full range of hybrid Toyota cars will be on show and the Tralee-based garage is inviting members of the public to attend the roadshow and take a test drive in one of the many cars on display. The show is part of an extended Toyota hybrid demonstration weekend at Kelliher’s Garage this weekend. The three-day festival of motoring got underway today (Friday) at their Tralee headquarters where a new five-year sponsorship deal with Kerry GAA was announced. On Saturday, Kelliher’s Garage will host the first of its hybrid days in the county where anyone who signs up for a test

drive on the day will be entered in a draw for a chance of winning €2,000 off their new Toyota purchase. The entire roadshow moves to The Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday morning. The Killarney event runs between 11am and 4pm. “We are proud and delighted to be able to bring and demonstrate the new generation Toyota hybrid product to the whole county, north, south, east or west,” Dealer Principal, Tim Kelliher, said. “Our five-year agreement with Kerry GAA Football and Hurling gives Kelliher's an opportunity to give a little back

In loving memory of Philomena Dooley 95 Forest Close, Ballyspillane Killarney who died on the 23rd of November, 2014.

God saw two hard-working hands getting tired and a golden heart of love We knew it was no wonder He wanted you above.

We would love to put on paper The feeling in our heart But the feeling is too deep today We don’t know where to start.

If Roses grow in Heaven Lord please pick a bunch for me Place them in my Mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me.

No words we write can ever say How much we miss you everyday No one knows the grief we bear When the family gather and you’re not there.

It broke our hearts to loose you Knowing you’re not here But in our hearts we keep you always very near Knowing we could do nothing but watch you from a chair.

Although we cannot see you You’re with us night and day For you we have a special love No one can take away.

Tell her I love her and miss her and when she turns to smile Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while.

All our life we will miss you As the years do come and go In our hearts you will live forever Because we miss you so.

Because remembering her is easy I do it every day But there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away.

Your name is often spoken We talk about you still You have not been forgotten By us you never will.

Always loved and remembered by your daughter Priscilla, son-in-law Shane and grandchildren Anthony, Brooklyn and Montanamena.

Crokes aiming for three birds with one stone County final berth, senior status and Legion’s fate all on the line versus Rahillys BIG GAME: Dr Crokes defender Gavin White will play a key role if the Killarney club are to advance to the county final. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.

After a disappointing run in this year’s Club Championship, Dr Crokes’ senior status appeared to be in real jeopardy. Finishing last in their group teed up a tantalising relegation playoff against the bottom team from the other group, the Killarney Legion. Excitement amongst GAA fans was high. Demotion would be a unthinkable for either club, particularly so for the Crokes who are the most successful senior club in the county. It promised to be one of the most important club matches ever played in Killarney. There was one major caveat, however: if either Legion or Crokes reached the final of the County Championship, they would be exempt from relegation. Legion failed to achieve that particular feat but Crokes now find themselves on the cusp. Victory over Kerins O’Rahillys in Sunday’s Kerry SFC semi-final will not only secure their spot in the county final, it will also guarantee their senior status for 2022 and relegate their fiercest rivals for good measure. Forget about killing two birds with one stone, Crokes are hoping to take out three of them. Of course, considering everything at stake, missing with that one stone would be a major disappointment. It would also hand Legion a lifeline and while neither side wants to be participating in this do-or-die match, the Derreen club need it. Dropping down to intermediate without getting the opportunity to play for their senior status would be a sad way to go. If Crokes were to lose this week, the playoff is likely to be staged either the following weekend or the weekend after that, presumably at the Fitzgerald Stadium.

CRACKER

But for now the focus is on Sunday’s

semi-final, and it promises to be a cracker. There has been some talk locally of this Crokes team being in transition but a quick glance at their teamsheet suggests otherwise. Eleven players who started in the club’s last county final victory in 2018 also started a fortnight ago against Templenoe: Shane Murphy, John Payne, Fionn Fitzgerald, Gavin White, Johnny Buckley, Gavin O’Shea, Micheál Burns, Brian Looney, Kieran O’Leary, David Shaw and Tony Brosnan. Two more, Daithí Casey and Mike Moloney, came off the bench. Young players have been blooded this season, most notably the impressive Mark Cooper and Evan Looney, but it hardly represents a radical overhaul. They are coming in slightly under the radar because of their poor championship record (by their own high standards) in 2019 and 2020, and that naturally suits them just fine. As for Rahillys, their path to the last four has been tougher than most. Many expected them to struggle against St Kieran’s in Round 1, and many more tipped Dingle to be too strong for them in the quarters, but the club from Strand Road are still standing. With David Moran pulling the strings from midfield and an in-form forward division that includes Jack Savage, Barry John Keane, Gavin O’Brien, the rejuvenated Tommy Walsh and the precocious Conor Hayes, the Tralee side are looking dangerous. They will be slight underdogs against Crokes this weekend but it wouldn’t be a complete shock if their recent momentum carries them over the line. The Legion supporters who make the journey to Tralee on Sunday will be with them every step of the way.

What’s in a name?

Here’s a trivia question for you. Four teams remain in the Kerry Senior Football Championship. Spell their names.

It sounds simple but it’s actually quite tricky, especially if you take heed of the great sportswriter Con Houlihan, who once said that “a man who will misuse an apostrophe is capable of anything”. Let’s start with the “easy” one. St Brendan’s. Former Sem students will know that an apostrophe is required. An open and shut case. But the official St Brendan’s Board Twitter account is St Brendans Board (no apostrophe), and the official Kerry GAA Eolaire refers to St. Brendans Committee (no apostrophe). Most people would agree that there should be an apostrophe. The board, like the Killarney college, is named for St Brendan. It is, in a manner of speaking, his college and his board. Therefore, it is St Brendan’s College and St Brendan’s Board. Without the apostrophe, it is ‘Brendans’ plural. Is the implication that the district is stacked with saints? With that in mind, let us consider Dr

Crokes. This is the usual spelling (no apostrophe) that is used by the club and by most journalists. However, this again suggests a club made up of multiple ‘Crokes’, rather than the club of Dr Croke. Maybe that’s the point, but the Killarney outfit are named for Archbishop Thomas William Croke in the same way that Brendan’s are named for St Brendan. Why should it be St Brendan’s Board but not Dr Croke’s GAA Club? Does one need to be canonised before earning an apostrophe? The same applies to Austin Stacks, who confirmed to me this week that they prefer not to use an apostrophe. The club is named after the Irish republican Austin Stack and so, technically, you could argue that it should be called Austin Stack’s GAA Club. And that’s a version that has been spotted in the past. I happen to have a Rockies jersey from 2010 for sale on Vintage GAA Jerseys (@vintage.gaa on Instagram – never miss an opportuni-

ty for a free plug) and the name on the crest has an apostrophe (pictured). The apostrophe does not appear on the current crest and it is not normally used by the media, although it is not completely unheard of. Things become even more complicated when we cross Tralee to Strand Road. Kerins O’Rahillys refer to themselves as such (no apostrophe) on their website and on their official Twitter account. Some journalists – this one included – have been known to use Kerins O’Rahilly’s. However, when you think about it, if that’s the route we’re taking then one apostrophe isn’t enough. The club is named for two men, Charlie Kerins and Michael Joseph O’Rahilly, so, grammatically speaking, should it actually be Kerins’ O’Rahilly’s? Or Kerins’/O’Rahilly’s? If either of those options look wrong to you, I’m with you. The same goes for Croke’s and Stack’s. They’re jarring because they are not commonly used. End-

| By Adam Moynihan ing names in ‘apostrophe + s’ also makes things tricky for me as a sportswriter. It is much cleaner to write, “Dr Crokes’ best player on the day was…” than “Dr Croke’s’ best player on the day was…” In 2015, Ulster GAA tackled this very issue by producing a document with the official names of every club in the province, in Irish and in English. Apostrophes were adopted across the board. Robert Emmet’s in Tyrone, Red Hugh’s in Donegal, Laurence O’Toole’s in Armagh. Would it be worth doing the same in Kerry? Even if all apostrophes were officially abolished (with Crokes, Stacks and Rahillys, as well as the likes of John Mitchels and Crotta O’Neills, keeping their current spellings), at least it would remove all doubt. There are two county semi-finals on this weekend and you can almost be guaranteed that each of the teams involved will read an “incorrect” version of their names in some outlet or another. To some, this might only be a small thing. Well, it is and it isn’t. Your name is your name. Surely it’s better for everyone to get it right than for half of us to get it wrong.

Stacks and Rahillys can tee up all-Tralee final

Eamonn Fitzgerald previews this weekend’s GAA action as the Kerry Senior Football Championship reaches the semi-final stage Ever since the Kerry County Board was founded in 1888 there has been an intense rivalry between Tralee and Killarney. There was always the power struggle at board room level and equally so on the playing fields. That is still there and it will come to light again this weekend when the Kerry SFC semi-finals are played. Where? Where else, but in Tralee? Mind you, Tralee had luck on its side when the two semi-finals were fixed. The nearly allTralee semi-final between Austin Stacks and St Brendan’s goes ahead tomorrow evening under lights with a 5.30pm throw-in. It will be televised by RTÉ. One would have thought that the second semi-final would come to the Fitzgerald Stadium. Not so. It went to a toss between Austin Stack Park and the Fitzgerald Stadium. Dr Crokes lost the toss so that game, Crokes v Kerins O’Rahillys, is fixed for Sunday, with a 2.30pm throw-in in Tralee. Any of the four teams still standing are well capable of advancing and I expect close enough finishes in both matches.

Kerins O’Rahillys and Austin Stacks are long established Tralee town teams, whereas St Brendan’s are a divisional side. They draw most of their players from Na Gaeil, the newest team in Tralee town who are very much the up-andcoming side. Brendan’s will have some players from John Mitchels, the other Tralee town team. They will also call on players from Churchill, St Pat's Blennerville and Ardfert. |

Austin Stacks v St Brendan’s (Saturday at 5.30pm)

Austin Stacks are the bookie's favourites to win the 2021 Bishop Moynihan Cup and it is easy to see why. They have won the Club Championship for the past three years and showed their potential for the big prize by mastering Kenmare in this year’s final. In their recent quarter–final, they blew South Kerry apart. Where are their strengths? Wayne Guthrie is a seasoned goalkeeper with a good kickout. He likes to play out to his own 45. Will he be lobbed someday when a kick goes astray?

The defence is excellent. They play the Dublin strategy, when Dublin were at their best and near invincible. Stacks defenders are very tight markers and so well disciplined, rarely conceding a free, which is a great sign of a winning team. It is not unusual for their backs to sally up the field, right into the attacking area with a choice of taking their own score or passing to a better positioned colleague. Darragh O’Brien is their main scorer. He scored eight points versus South Kerry, six from frees. While Shane O’Callaghan is not as sharp as he has been in the past, they will expect more from him tomorrow. Joe O’Connor is a lively midfielder who can also go forward to score a goal. He will be hoping to impress Jack O’Connor in his bid to partner Diarmuid O’Connor (no relation) in Kerry’s midfield. Stacks are by far the fittest team of the four semi-finalists and should run up bigger scores than they have been doing. Is that a weakness in their armoury? I think so. The conversion stats aren’t great. They should have been out of sight at

BATTLE: Kerins O'Rahilly's midfielder David Moran tackles Johnny Buckley of Dr Crokes. Moran scored 17 fantasy points in Round 2 while Buckley managed a respectable 8.

half–time in that win over South Kerry. And, even though they dominated the exchanges v East Kerry, they did not run up a decent score (admittedly on a rain lashed night). When East Kerry woke up in the closing stages they came within two points of Stacks. Another chink. Watch their forward strategy. You could be watching Dublin at their best. 38-yearold Kieran Donaghy will hug the sideline, especially as an opening strategy. What does his marker do? Follow him out or leave the Big Fella out there to pull the Rockies’ strings? Star will be hoping to create that yawning gap through he middle for just about any Stacks man to motor in for scores, preferably goals.

CHALLENGE

It is working for them, so what can St Brendan’s do to not be bossed? How can they play their own successful game that has launched them into the county semi-final for the third year in a row? History is against the divisional side advancing to the final. Stacks will attack St Brendan’s from the moment their raucous band of young bodhrán players enter the stadium, just at that strategic moment when Brendan’s will be putting the finishing touches to their warm up. The black and amber flares will follow on the terrace. Stacks are well disciplined, mobile and committed to redress the imbalance they have suffered from the Killarney black and amber club. For the past 27 years, their successes in the premier competition yielded just two wins: 1994 (defeating Crokes) and in 2014 (defeating Mid Kerry in a replay). That most recent victory deprived Dr Crokes of a five-in–a-row. Brendan’s were always comfortable against the Legion. They had an explosive start to that game with their full forward line of James Duggan, Alan O’Donoghue and goalscorer Dan Goggin running up a fine score of 1-5 in the opening quarter. Young players such as Mikey Kelleher and Joe Lenihan give them options, as does Ivan Parker. He did not start v Legion after recovering from concussion, but he impressed when he came on. More good options for Brendan’s manager Donal Rooney include David O’Callaghan,

Eric Leen and Stefan Okunbor. He will want to end their run of making it to the semi-final, but no further. The star-studded East Kerry team were their nemesis, but the latter are out of the equation this year. Brendan’s will win midfield with Kerry and Na Gaeil duo Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor expected to dominate. It may well be down to how the three Barry brothers (Jack at midfield and Fergal and Andrew, who are playing very well in the half back line). I think they will put it up to Stacks, if they do not let the Rockies’ swagger put them on the back foot from the start. I expect a brilliant start for the benefit of RTÉ viewers. And, in the finish, I expect Stacks to advance to the final. |

Kerins O’Rahillys v Dr Crokes (Sunday at 2.30pm).

Kerins O'Rahillys have been in the shadow of their great Tralee town rivals, Austin Stacks, for far too long. They haven’t won the Bishop Moynihan Cup since 2002. Then it is all the ways back to the 1950s, to the era of the mighty John Dowling, their most famous player. He captained Kerry to win that special 1955 All-Ireland and he was as enthusiastic coaching the young Strand Road juveniles into his seventies as he was for Kerry. The 1950s were Rahillys’ golden years, Kerry champions in 1953, 1954 and 1957. But the ensuing 64-year gap doesn’t sit well with this proud club.

Seánie Walsh, that brilliant high-fielder, never won a Kerry SFC medal. It is now over to his son Tommy to lift the club out of that lacuna. 2021 didn’t look like a revival year for O’Rahillys as they started slowly, but they have been very impressive in recent matches. Kerry stars David Moran and Tommy Walsh have had great years in the county geansaís and are now doing it for Strand Road. They possibly might not be in Jack O’Connor’s plans, but they are crucial for Rahillys. Jack Savage is a good forward and will be on Jack’s Kerry radar. Former Kerry player Barry John Keane is also a consistent three-pointer and Crokes will have to decide which one of these point scorers will be picked up by Fionn Fitzgerald, if they release him from the full back position. It is likely that Smiler will return at No. 3 to use his height and blunt the aerial danger Tommy Walsh will present in front of the square. Look out for corner forward Conor Hayes, son of that great referee Paul Hayes. He’s very nippy and good for a goal. David Naughton will have his hands full if he is the designated man marker. The experienced Gavin O’Brien will also take some watching. Dr Crokes played very poorly for the early part of this season and were on a revenge mission against a much depleted Templenoe team in the quarter-final. They looked very impressive, shooting 1-22, but they know full well that the upbeat Rahillys will be a different kettle

of fish. Dr Crokes reigned supreme as kingpins of Kerry between 2010 and 2018, winning seven Kerry SFC titles in that period. They have been building a new team for the past few years, blooding emerging players such as Mark Cooper, Evan Looney, Mark O’Shea, Jordan Kiely and Cian McMahon, all new to senior football. These players are doing well, but they are still relying on the tried and trusted winners such as John Payne, Johnny Buckley, Smiler Moloney, Fionn Fitzgerald, Kieran O’Leary, and Brian Looney, of course, fresh from Tír na nÓg to kick five wonderful second-half points in the quarter-final. This experienced bunch were flying high in the glory days, but can they still continue to deliver match winning performances? Kerry players Gavin White, Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan are the new leaders in this team and will be expected to show the way. Goalkeeper Shane Murphy is in great form and is brilliant in the kickout strategy, long or short. His long kicks go right up to his half forwards, bypassing midfield. Rahillys manager William Harmon, nephew of Moss Harmon of Lewis Road, will exploit these well-worn legs. His charges will run at Crokes in the belief that this over (well over) thirties brigade cannot have the legs of youth that delivered all those titles. Manager Edmund O’Sullivan and Jamie Doolan have the seasoned winners Colm Cooper and Eoin Brosnan

to maximise a new strategy for this emerging Crokes team. Crokes have plenty of options on the bench and will probably use 20 players over the hour. The gelling hasn’t set yet and Rahillys will fancy their chances to make it an all-Tralee final. They should come through. Crokes last won the title with a three-in–a-row from 2016 to 2018. An all-Tralee final - how about that for bragging rights in the county capital of Kerry!

DAMIEN FLEMING

It was heart-warming to watch the Irish defeat the All Blacks at the Aviva and to see Ireland scoring goals in their final international of the season, copper-fastening Stephen Kenny’s future. James Fleming, son of Tadhgie and Maureen Fleming of Lewis Road, was a very important wing forward for Crokes, winning all those Kerry SFC titles. He was also a brilliant player and coach in basketball, but it is his brother, Damien, who is shooting out the lights in another sport. In a very special way, we end this week’s column with cheers galore for Damien who is now the number one pitch and putt player in Ireland. That is some achievement and it is also a wonderful honour for his club, Deerpark, on Lewis Road. Seems like Lewis Road winds its way so often into this week’s column.

Five-star Celts still undefeated Killarney Celtic came out the right side of a goal-fest at Celtic Park last Friday night to maintain their perfect league record and consolidate their place at the top of Kerry’s Premier A Division. The Celts were playing host to winless Camp United and a goal by Stephen McCarthy with just eight minutes on the clock set the tone. Darragh Lowth doubled the Killarney side’s advantage in the 36th minute and when McCarthy made it 3-0 just before the break, the visitors had a huge mountain to climb. Camp pulled one back not long after half-time but Gary Keane pushed the lead back out to three with a tidy finish in the 71st minute. Credit to the underdogs, they kept plugging away, and when they stole in for two quickfire goals in the final 10 minutes, a shock was on the cards. There was time for an eighth and final goal but, fortunately for Celtic, it was Stephen McCarthy who made it 5-3, com-

pleting his hat-trick in the process. The result leaves Celtic sitting pretty on top of the league with four wins from four matches, with Killarney Athletic, Listowel Celtic and Castleisland six points behind in joint second. Castleisland play Tralee Dynamos in this weekend’s only Premier A fixture. Celtic are in Munster Junior Cup action as they take on Fenit Samphires at Celtic Park on Sunday. Kick-off is at 11am. Elsewhere in the same competition, Listowel face Ballyheigue Athletic. In the Premier B, MEK Galaxy meet Castleisland B in Fossa, Ballyhar Dynamos welcome Castlegregory Celtic to Murt Scott Park, and Celtic B travel to Ballyduff to do battle with Rattoo Rovers.

KERRY GIRLS PREVAIL IN CORK

The Kerry U13 Gaynor side travelled to the CWSSL (Cork) for their final group game on the back of a good win over Limerick County. And they followed it up with an even better 2-0 win. Laura Falvey got both Kerry goals either side of half-time. Cork threw everything at the visitors for the rest of the game and did hit the crossbar but the Kerry defence was excellent in keeping their hosts at bay. The win came at a cost as Emma Daly picked up an ankle injury and we wish her a speedy return. The Kerry U15s went down 4-0 to the same opposition and both squads now await news of the knockout stages of the 2021 Gaynor Cups.

KILKENNY NO MATCH FOR KERRY IN KENNEDY CUP

While the 2021 Kennedy Cup is a different competition from the usual mid-summer week in UL, it is just as eagerly contested. Kerry advanced to the knockout phase after a very good group stage and were drawn away to Kilkenny in the Bowl quarter-final. It was the Kerry boys who have progressed to the semi-final thanks to an Oisin Fleming goal set up by a defence-splitting pass from Brian O’Shea. Kilkenny put the Kerry defence under a lot of pressure but found keeper Pearce Moynihan in great form on the rare occasion that they got past the Kerry rearguard. Clare and Galway are also through to the semi-final with the final spot going to the winners of the NDSL v Limerick Desmond game.

Battling Lakers come up short against league leaders Demons While the result might paint the picture of a one-sided game, it belies the fact that for long periods the home side gave as good as they got against the table-toppers from across the county bounds. | By Enda Walshe Indeed, early in the second half when Senan O’Leary drained two consecutive three pointers to make it a seven-point game, there was a definite whiff of a competitive game in the air, However, Demons player Stefan Manojovic put any hopes of a home win to bed with four three pointers in the third quarter and the Lakers could not get within touching distance again. There is no denying that Demons were full value for their win with Kyle Hosford conducting the orchestra, but what could not be hidden was the way the Lakers went about the game as they battled all the way to the end. It is widely acknowledged that Demons are a Super League team in waiting and though they were slow to settle, they

KILLARNEY SPORTS & LEISURE CENTRE eventually got going in the second part of the opening quarter. Only Jamie O’Sullivan and Rui Saravia got on the scoresheet for the Lakers as Tala Fam Thiam and Hosford helped Demons to a 23-8 lead. The presence of Paul Clarke, who was still nursing an injury, coincided with Lakers’ best periods as his defence and reading of the game made a big difference. He was central to one of the scores of the night with slick passing seeing Ben Miller laying up and completing a three-point play. With O’Sullivan and Daniel Carroll on song, the Lakers stayed in touch at the break, trailing 31-43. The Lakers’ cause wasn't helped by a facial injury to top scorer Emilian Grudov. He sat out a lot of the first half and his influence on the game was never really significant thereafter. The third quarter saw Demons extend their lead to 23 points, despite the best efforts of Saravia (who had his best out-

ing to date), Miller and O’Leary. A notable introduction to National League basketball came in the shape of 17-year-old Luke Crowley, son of Kerry GAA legend Johnny, and he set about his task with gusto. He was later joined by the highly rated Jack O’Sullivan for his home debut. Baskets from Grudov, Clarke, Miller and two further three pointers from O’Leary meant the Lakers kept their tempo going to the very end. On reflection it can be noted they outscored their illustrious opponents in the second and fourth quarters. It's nights like these that the young players learn from and the big home support could fully see and appreciate the wholehearted effort of the squad. “We played well in periods but at other times we might have held onto the ball for too long, and defensively at times communication was lacking,” head coach Jarlath Lee said. “This is a process with such a young

team, it will take time. But we will get there.” The Lakers are on the road again on November 27 as they travel to Portlaoise looking to avenge their cup defeat at the hands of the Panthers. The next home game sees Limerick Sport Eagles visit the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on Saturday, December 11.

SCOTTS LAKERS: Ben Miller (16), Rui Saravia (15), Senan O’Leary (14), Jamie O’Sullivan (10), Emilian Grudov (7), Daniel Carroll (5), Paul Clarke (4), Lorcan Keane, Mark Sheehan, Jack O’Sullivan, Jason Lee. UCC DEMONS TOP SCORERS:

Tala Fam Thiam (26), Kyle Hosford (17), Stefan Manojovic (14).

St Paul’s man gets top MOTORSPORT Irish coaching job

BRIEFS...

The Director of Coaching at St Paul’s Killarney has been unveiled as the new Ireland U17 women’s head coach. Adrian Flynn, an Edinburgh native who moved to Killarney in September, was officially handed the role by Basketball Ireland’s Elite Performance Committee (EPC) on Tuesday. He previously coached Boroughmuir Blaze in Edinburgh and German club Gotha Rockets, and has 10 years of international experience with Scotland at various age groups. Most recently Flynn spent two seasons working as head coach for youth development at Wetterbygden Basketball in Jönköping, Sweden. "I'm delighted to be leading a national team during a great time for Irish basketball,” Flynn said. “I'm looking forward to meeting the players later this month and I can't wait to get started.” Chair of the EPC, Tim Rice, said Flynn is “a welcome addition” to Basketball Ireland’s international set-up. “He has a lot of experience coaching the game

throughout the world and also coached in the Scottish national programme. We look forward to his work in helping to develop our players in the U17 women's programme." Flynn’s appointment means that St Paul’s now have two coaches operating at international level. James Weldon is the current coach of the Irish senior women’s team.

A record 160 cars will start the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally in just over a week’s time. World Rally Stars Craig Breen and local man Paul Nagle are the top seeds in a BMW M3. Their main opposition will come from current Northern Ireland Rally Champion Jonathan Greer and his Welsh co-driver Dai Roberts in a Ford Sierra Cosworth. It is a somewhat unusual situation as both Breen’s and Greer’s fathers have also entered the event. Ray Breen, a former

National Champion, will drive one of two Subaru Legacys while David Greer will drive an Opel Manta 400. The second Legacy is in the hands of local man Alan Ring and he starts behind two former winners of the event: Denis Moynihan and Mark Falvey, who are both in Ford Escort Mk1s. The rally is celebrating its 25th anniversary and organisers Killarney and District Motor Club welcome back John Keatley, who won the first event in 1996. He will drive the same Porsche 911 he used to win the rally quarter of a century ago.

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U12 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic 3 Bunratty Cratole 2. Our young blues made the trip to Clare this morning for a National Cup tie. Athletic made a slow start and went behind after one minute from an own goal. But the lads never let the heads drop and picked up the pace and intensity and hit three goals before the break. Two great goals from Enna Hennigan and a header from Jayden Hurley put Athletic in control of the tie. In the second half Bunratty Cratloe stayed in the game through some nice saves from their keeper and got one back with a few mins left. Athletic saw the game out with little drama in the end and came away from Clare still in the hat for the next round. U14 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Athletic 3 Avenue Utd 3 (Symon Jasinski 2, Ben Kelleher - Avenue won 4-3 on penalties).
