Sean Kelly faces tough Fine Gael battle for Presidential nomination

Seán Kelly MEP faces an uphill battle to secure Fine Gael’s nomination for the Presidency after former cabinet minister Heather Humphreys quickly established a strong lead in parliamentary support this week.

Both Mr Kelly and Ms Humphreys formally announced their intention to seek the party’s nomination on Tuesday morning. Each candidate will need the support of 20 members of the parliamentary party, 25 councillors and five members of the Fine Gael executive council in order to secure a place on the ballot.

Ms Humphreys has already secured at least 29 public declarations from TDs and senators.

Party insiders suggested her tally could climb above 30 by the end of the week, giving her a comfortable cushion well above the required threshold.

Among her backers are ministers Peter Burke and Patrick O’Donovan, junior ministers Neale Richmond, Hildegarde Naughton, Colm Brophy and Emer Hig-

gins, and a wide spread of TDs and senators including David Maxwell, John Paul O’Shea, Paula Butterly, Frank Feighan, Catherine Callaghan, Alan Dillon and Maria Byrne.

In contrast, Mr Kelly had secured the backing of six members of the parliamentary party.

Those include Clare TD Joe Cooney, who said that as a Munster man and a GAA man he would be proud to support Mr Kelly, as well as Senators Michael Kennelly and Garrett Ahearn and TDs Noel

McCarthy, Brian Brennan and Michael Murphy.

Mr Kelly, a former president of the GAA who has served as an MEP for Ireland South since 2009, entered the race following the withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness on health grounds. He said the change in circumstances led him to reflect on whether now was the right time to put himself forward.

In a statement, Mr Kelly said: “As someone who has devoted my life to serving communities across Ireland, as a teacher, as President of the GAA, and for the past

sixteen years as MEP for Ireland South, I am confident that I can represent the country with integrity, inclusiveness, and a commitment to our communities. To be entrusted with that honour would be the greatest privilege of my life.”

He thanked his constituents in Ireland South for their support and added that a competitive process would be good for Fine Gael as it prepared for a presidential election contest.

Ms Humphreys, a Cavan-Monaghan native, is also a former cabinet minister with strong links to Northern Ireland. She has spoken in the past about her Unionist family background and is viewed by many in the party as a figure who could broaden Fine Gael’s appeal in the race for the Áras.

The contest to secure the Fine Gael nomination will now move quickly, with both candidates expected to spend the coming weeks canvassing members of the parliamentary party, councillors and executive members.

For Mr Kelly, the challenge will be to build momentum from his base in Munster and within the GAA community. For Ms Humphreys, the task will be to consolidate her early lead and demonstrate her national reach.

Murphy to tell all in 'searing' autobiography

an imprint of

It will detail Murphy's journey to securing his fourth champion jockey title, along with his four wins at Royal

and three Group One victories. In a social media post Murphy said: "I wanted to share my passion for racing and horses and what a year in the life of

a jockey looks like." He promised readers a level of "access, honesty and insight" into the daily struggles of a jockey. The book is set to cover the difficult parts of his career and personal life. Murphy has faced several public incidents, including a positive cocaine test in 2020 that led to a three-month ban, and a later 14-month suspension for breaking COVID rules and failing two breathalyser tests. More recently, he was fined and banned from driving after a car crash in April.

Penguin's description of the book states it will reveal his personal struggles, including with alcohol, and the pressure that "pushed his body and mind to their breaking point." It will also describe the "private agony of wasting" (the process jockeys go through to lose weight) and the sense of community in the weighing room.

by Bantam Press,

Fossa Youth Club’s 1975 World Record to be marked

50 years on

The 50th anniversary of a Guinness World Record set by Fossa Youth Club will be celebrated later this year.

In August 1975, members of the club played five-a-side soccer for 57 hours non-stop over the bank holiday weekend.

The marathon effort set a new world record and regained the title for Fossa, who had originally set the record at 55 hours before it was beaten by the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Britain a short time later.

The original match was played at Fossa GAA grounds, with players rotating in and out but keeping the game going for more than two days and nights without

a break. The players were eventually hosed down with cold water after the final whistle.

At the time, the achievement made national headlines. RTÉ News broadcast a report in August 1975 under the headline: “A Kerry youth club sets about creating a new world record for non-stop five-a-side football.”

The Killarney Advertiser also carried full coverage. Writing in his report, journalist Eamonn Fitzgerald said:

“Members of Fossa Youth Club spent the August bank holiday weekend breaking

the world record for the longest game of five-a-side football. They played for 57 hours. The Fossa Club recaptured a record they had set originally at 55 hours which was broken by the Duke of York’s Royal Military School in Britain.” He described the remarkable scenes at the finish:

“Players cooled off after the marathon game as onlookers gathered around the pitch to witness history being made. The club sent details of their latest 57-hour

effort to the Guinness Book of Records for ratification.”

The feat was later confirmed by Guinness World Records.

Now, 50 years on, two of the original participants, James Houlihan and Noel Fitzgerald are contacting former club members who took part with the aim of organising a reunion later in the year. Funds raised at the 1975 event went towards the construction of the new Prince of Peace Church in the village.

Regulator questions New St multi-storey car park plan

Plans for a multi-storey car park in Killarney have been questioned by the State’s planning regulator, who has called on Kerry County Council to drop the proposal from its draft variation of the County Development Plan 2022-2028.

The Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) said the plan does not align with national or regional policy on air quality and sustainable transport. The proposal commits the council to “facilitate the provision of a multi-storey car park in Killarney at an appropriate location.” Council officials had previously pointed to the New Street car park site as the preferred location. Estimates suggested a three-storey facility there could provide 516 spaces, a net gain of almost 300, at a cost of €12.7 million.

However, the OPR noted that the council itself has stated that current parking supply is already adequate. Figures show there are 1,373 spaces in public car parks in the town, in addition to on-street and

private parking.

The regulator also highlighted a separate proposal for 139 spaces at Green Lawn, off Mission Road, which was recently put out for public consultation.

The debate comes after Killarney councillors voted last week, by a narrow margin, to approve plans for the Green Lawn car park near St Mary’s Cathedral. That decision was opposed by local residents and raised concerns among gardaí, who warned of possible increased traffic congestion in the area.

The draft variation was prepared to set out a settlement plan for the Killarney Municipal District and to provide a detailed planning framework for the town.

Maureen O’Reilly’s funeral mass took place this morning and she was buried in Aghadoe Cemetery.

Tributes paid to the late Padraig O’Rahilly at funeral

The late Padraig O’Rahilly of Calfmount, Headford was laid to rest on Monday, as family and friends gathered to honour the life of a man who was hugely popular and well liked amongst the local community.

Padraig O’Rahilly, who was 28 years old, died after getting into difficulty in the River Flesk last Tuesday.

The funeral took place at Barraduff Church, with Padraig being laid to rest at Kilquane Cemetery.

Symbols representing his life were brought to the altar. A cherished family photograph, a picture marking the day he passed his driving test, his Glenflesk jersey and medals, a Manchester United jersey, and a Kerry jersey.

A Glenflesk flag was draped over his coffin, a tribute to his passion for sport. In a heartfelt tribute to their late brother, Padraig’s sisters Valerie and Maureen remembered their beloved brother who they absolutely adored.

“He was the kindest, purest and most caring person and as a family we are heartbroken and devastated. This will affect us for the rest of our lives.”

Padraig was an avid spots fan. Valerie recalled how he was “stone mad about sport” and he played at all levels with Glenflesk GAA as a very talented left legger. He also played soccer with Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic.

He began supporting Manchester United at a young age; Valerie said that anybody who knew Padraig knew the team were his whole world.

Padraig worked at Mr Price; he was very fond of the shop and his colleagues.

Valerie described his love for driving and how he had travelled all around the country.

“The day he passed his driving test meant the absolute world to him.”

Padraig’s friend Dermot also spoke at the funeral and paid tribute to him.

“The huge support Padraig was to Maureen over the last few years has to be mentioned. He absolutely loved and adored Maureen, as he loved all of his family. Particularly, her two sons Fionn and Aaron, and by god they adored him too.”

Maureen’s son Fionn was brought to the alter and Dermot said to him: “Fionn, we want you to know that Padraig is up in heaven looking down so proud of you for being an absolutely brilliant boy all this week.”

Speaking about his friendship with Padraig, Dermot said he got to know him six or seven years ago.

Dermot described his friend as kind and unassuming with a big circle of friends around him.

“There is nobody in this world that could say a bad word about Padraig. He was so loved by his family and friends. We will miss him.”

He concluded the eulogy by saying: “It was our pleasure to have known you Padraig, as our friend.”

Celtic Erasmus+ participants receive YouthPass certs

Killarney Celtic Football Club's Erasmus+ Youth Mobility project has concluded with participating players receiving YouthPass certificates. Launched last February by MEP Seán Kelly, the project aimed to provide learning and experiences for the club's members.

The certs were awarded to all the Irish and Italian participants in the project which saw a ground-breaking youth event take place in Italy at Easter. It was the first time an Irish sports club

has availed of Youth Mobility Erasmus+ funding and the trip saw 30 young Killarney Celtic players, with group leaders and accompanying adults travel to Verres in Northern Italy for the ex-

change. The link, established between Celtic and Verrès college ISILTEP, delivered a great programme of activities which was undertaken jointly by a group of Italian youth with the Irish visitors drawn from six different Killarney Celtic teams at under 13 and under 16 levels. The programme, supported by the local mayor and community, included a full programme of cultural activities, sports and climate change impact tuition and it focused on challenges facing young peo-

ple in both communities.

In its final project report, the club has called upon the EU and Léargas, the national agency supporting Erasmus+ projects in Ireland, to involve more sports clubs as a means to build on their youth networks for exchanges.

The Celtic club officers are happy to share their experiences to encourage other Kerry clubs to get involved in Erasmus+ projects through the Kerry PPN, the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and the Kerry Schoolboy and Girls’ League.

Based on the success of this exchange, the club hopes to apply for funding for further Erasmus+ projects in the future and looks forward to hosting a delegation from the Italian partners in August 2025.

Repair works completed on Farranfore to Killarney Road

Repair works on a burst pipe at Brennan’s Glen on the N22 Farranfore to Killarney Road were completed on Wednesday, with water supplies now returning to affected customers.

Uisce Éireann crews began work early in the morning, with a Stop-Go system in place to protect both workers and the public. The outage disrupted supply in Coolick, Lawlor’s Cross, Finnegan’s Cross, Glebe, Dunrine and surrounding areas. Charlie O’Leary of Uisce Éireann thanked the community for their patience. “We understand the inconvenience caused

and our crews made every effort to minimise the disruption. Water will start to slowly return to customers, though it may take longer for those on higher ground or at the end of the network. We anticipate all customers should have water restored by tonight,” he said. Commuters faced delays on Wednesday morning as the works took place at Brennan’s Glen. One lane was closed from 5.30am to 7.30am with a Stop-Go system in operation. Both lanes reopened between 7.30am and 9am to ease peak traffic. After 9am the road was reduced to a single lane again to allow works to continue.

Killarney man to take on 200km Kerry Way Ultra for Mental Health

A Killarney man will take on the gruelling 200km Kerry Way Ultra Marathon next month to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health Association.

Philip Kissane, a father of three, will run non-stop over two days on September 5 and 6. The course, which starts and finishes at Killarney Racecourse, covers the Kerry Way trail with over 5,000 metres of climbing.

Last year, Philip completed the route in 38 hours, an achievement given the demanding terrain of mountain passes, bogs, country roads and sleepers. This year, he is again running to support Kerry Mental Health Association, a charity that provides services to people with mental health challenges in the county, as well as their families and carers. Philip, who is a Construction Site Man-

ager with Sisk at the new Killarney Community Hospital, said:

“I am proud to support Kerry Mental Health Association once again as it’s a local charity that focuses on promoting mental wellbeing and removing the stigma around mental illness in my county. As a mental health ambassador within Sisk, I understand how we need to be conscious of each other’s mental wellbeing and to encourage more conversations around such an important health matter. I hope the public can help me by donating whatever you can.” Donations can be made online at idonate.ie/fundraiser/PhilipKissane12.

Final Anam Session of the summer this Monday

The final Anam Session of the summer season takes place this Monday, August 25, at 7pm in the Anam Centre on East Avenue.

Local musician Tim O’Shea will be joined by guest Mike Walsh from Knocknagoshel for the free concert of traditional and folk music. The event brings to a close the eight-week series of Monday evening performances which have fea-

tured both established and emerging talent from Killarney and beyond. Walsh, a flute and whistle player steeped in the Sliabh Luachra tradition, recently performed at an Irish festival in Greece and will also join O’Shea on his annual tour of Germany in October. The series has been run as a pilot project and is sponsored by the Kerry Arts Office.

She was presented with her sash by the outgoing 2024 Rose of Tralee, Keely O’Grady.

She thanked her parents and the 31 other contestants who stood on the stage behind her for their unwavering support.

The 20-year-old apprentice electrician from Ballyouskill grew up on a dairy farm

along the Laois-Kilkenny border.

She is currently in the third phase of her electrical apprenticeship with Alpha Drives and plans to pursue an engineering degree in the future.

Swedish

church moved to new location by trailer

A 113-year-old church in Sweden has been successfully relocated in its entirety over the course of two days.

The building was carefully lifted onto a specially designed trailer which transported the church to a new location, 5km from its original site. Located in Kiruna, a town far north of Sweden, the building was at risk due to ground instability. The two-day journey was livestreamed which drew an international interest. Thousands of visitors descended upon Kiruna to witness the historic event. The church’s vicar blessed the church on Tuesday morning before it left and it arrived at its new destination on Wednesday. The move is part of a 30-year project to relocate thousands of people and buildings from the city.

The Kiruna Church is a wooden Lutheran church which was built in 1912. It weighs 672 tons and has previously been described as the town’s soul, a safe place for those who live there. Its design was influenced from both Scandinavian Romantic architecture and Sami culture. It is a special and unique landmark to the Swedish town. The church is set to reopen in its new location by the end of 2026.

Eurovision 2026 host city revealed

Vienna has been chosen to host next year’s Eurovision Song Contest which is taking place in May.

Austria won the competition this year with operatic ballad Wasted Love performed by JJ. As per tradition, the winner of the song contest hosts the competition the following year. Two

Austrian cities were in the running to host the event, Vienna and Innsbruck. The organisers of the competition confirmed on Wednesday that Vienna has been selected to host the 70th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It will be the third time the competition is held in Vienna, the last time being 2015. Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision

Song Contest said the EBU is thrilled that Vienna has been chosen. He said: “Vienna’s reputation as one of the most musical cities in the world, and its location in the heart of Europe, makes it the perfect host city for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.” The Eurovision semi-finals will take place on May 12 and 14 while the final is set to take place on May 16.

Aware launches free mental health education programme

Aware, a national mental health organisation, is providing a free education programme for people who are seeking to learn more about their mental health.

It applies to everybody; people living with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder or those who want to support a loved one. Registration opens on September 1, and it is free. It will provide practical, evidence-based courses designed to help manage and understand mental health better. Programmes are available both in-person and online and are open and free to anyone aged 18 or over living in Ireland. The Aware Resilience Programme is one of the courses on offer which is 6 weeks long and rooted in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques. Participants will learn how to manage daily stresses, challenge unhelpful thoughts and build coping strategies. Sessions will run for 90 minutes and will be led by trained facilitators. The Family Support Programme is an option for those who are looking to support a relative or friend. The course focuses on

looking after the supporter as much as the person they support. Over the course of four weeks, it offers practical ways to provide effective support while protecting your own mental health. And for people living with bipolar disorder, the Living Well with Bipolar Disorder Programme is delivered over the course of eight weeks by an experienced mental health professional. Educational in nature, the aim of the programme is to provide you with opportunities to understand and manage bipolar disorder effectively, equipping you with the knowledge and tools to live well. Their Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Programme takes place through 2.5-hour sessions once a week, over eight consecutive weeks. Delivered in conjunction with experienced Mindfulness teachers from The Mindfulness Centre, the programme is suitable for those experiencing depression or low mood, anxiety or stress. Extensive research has shown that developing mindfulness has a significant positive effect on reducing anxiety, depression, and managing stress.

She said: “Women who don’t follow the so-called ‘traditional path’ often tell me they feel overlooked. Willow gives them

a space where they are not only seen but celebrated. It’s about connection, courage, and joy, finding fulfilment and beauty in life, whatever shape it takes,” Willow’s first expert-led event, “Financial Wellness for Women” with Deirdre McCarthy of Financial Literacy Ireland (FLIT.ie), takes place online on September 3 from 7.30–8.30pm. This free event will explore how women can take control of their financial wellbeing at every stage of life. Ukrainian film to represent Ireland at the Oscars

An Irish-made, Ukrainian-language film Sanatorium has been selected to represent Ireland at the Oscars.

The couple celebrated their nuptials over the course of three days at Dromquinna Manor with 160 guests in attendance. The wedding was Celtic-themed celebrating their shared heritage. The celebrations began on Friday with a

drinks reception and pizza for the wedding guests. The pair spoke to British Vogue about their big day. The bride said she wished she could do it all over again. She said: “Everybody said that the whole weekend was like something from a movie, and it really was.” Jackson walked down the aisle to a cover of Dreams by the Cranberries. Her Derry Girls co-star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell was by her side as a bridesmaid on the day.

The film is described as a vividly cinematic real-life observation of a community searching for love, healing and happiness within the confines of a wellness centre near Odesa in Southern Ukraine. It was directed by Galway-born filmmaker Gar O’Rourke. The film follows in the steps of Oscar-Nominated An Cailín Ciúin in 2023 and Oscar-shortlisted Kneecap in 2025. The Feature Film category at the Oscars is specific for films produced in a language other than English and each country can enter one film to represent their country. Gar O’Rourke said it is a privilege to represent Ireland on the biggest stage in world cinema. He said: “This was a film that set out to show the power of healing, the resilience of community, and above all the

strength of the Ukrainian spirit in the face of such traumatic times.” The Oscars International Feature shortlist will be announced on December 16 and the final five nominees will be announced on January 22, while the actual awards ceremony takes place on March 15.

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson wed Scottish DJ Hector Barbour, known as Denis Sulta, in Kenmare last weekend.

Dunloe Lodge raises €2,000 for local charities

The Dunloe Lodge on Plunkett Street, Killarney, recently raised €2,000 for local charities through a raffle for tickets to the All-Ireland GAA Football Final between Kerry and Donegal.

The funds were equally divided between Kerry Parents and Friends and Kerry Cancer Support Services.

The fundraiser was successful due to the support of customers, the wider community, and ticket purchasers. Proprietors

Helen and Liam O’Brien, along with Manager Gearoid Nagle and staff, presented the proceeds to representatives of the chosen charities. Trish Kelly and Breda Dyland accepted a cheque for €1,000 on behalf of Kerry Cancer Support Services,

which provides transport to treatment centres in Cork, Limerick, and Galway, among other support. Neil Ashworth accepted a cheque for €1,000 for Kerry Parents and Friends, an organization that works to improve services in the community. The management and staff of The Dunloe Lodge thanked everyone who contributed to the fundraiser's success.

O’Sullivan denied despite dominant season with Devine

Killarney’s Noel O’Sullivan guided Claudy’s Callum Devine to a sensational second Irish Tarmac Rally Championship Drivers’ title but the Kerry man cannot be crowned co-drivers’ champion as he did not register for the series at the start of the season.

The pair proved unbeatable once they appeared on the championship trail, winning the Rally of the Lakes, the Circuit of Ireland, the Donegal International, and the Ulster Rally.

Their Ulster triumph sealed Devine’s drivers’ title, but the championship rules mean O’Sullivan scores no points.

At the beginning of the year, O’Sullivan believed the crew would not commit to a full campaign, so he did not submit his registration.

Ironically, once they joined the series in Killarney, they never lost a rally.

That leaves the co-drivers’ championship wide open. It will be decided between Patrick Walsh and Andy Hayes at the final round in Cork this October.

For O’Sullivan, it is a bittersweet outcome: he was in the co-driver’s seat for the most dominant run of wins in recent Irish Tarmac history but the rules mean he walks away without a title to show for it.

CCPC reveal top consumer complaints so far this year

Faulty goods, poor online shopping experiences and botched home improvements are among the list of issues consumers have contacted the CCPC about so far this year.

That’s according to the CCPC helpline report released this week. The CCPC Consumer Helpline report breaks down calls made from January to June of this year. It details the top sectors, issues and traders that prompted consumers to contact the CCPC helpline. Vehicles and transport led the list of sectors that consumers contacted the CCPC about, while the top traders named by consumers con-

tacting the helpline included Ryanair, Eir and Sky. Findings revealed that 20,526 consumers contacted the CCPC helpline, mostly by phone, email and webform. Consumers reported spending an average of €6,400 on the product or service they had an issue with. The CCPC’s free online Money Tools were used 352,655 times. Grainne Griffin, CCPC Director of Communications, said the consumer contacts are vital to directing their work as a helpline. She said: “The information provided by consumers helps us to identify rogue traders, patterns of potential law breaking and means we can target our resources for maximum impact.”

September is the time to sell

New figures release by the Central Statistics Office show that property prices registered monthly growth of 0.9% in June, the highest rate since November last year. Home prices across the country grew by 7.8% in the year to June, unchanged from the rate of growth the previous month, the CSO added.

The CSO said the median price of a home purchased in June was €370,000. Figures show that property prices outside of the capital were up 8.8% compared with June last year.

The CSO said that Dublin residential property prices are 5.9% higher than their February 2007 peak, while residential property prices in the Rest of Ire-

land are a remarkable 21.8% higher than their May 2007 peak.

Today's figures also show that a total of 4,029 home purchases were filed with Revenue, an increase of 13.1% compared with the 3,563 purchases in June last year.

Existing homes accounted for 76.7% of the transactions filed in June, an increase of 8.2% compared with June 2024. The balance of 23.3% were new homes, which marked a rise of 32.9% on the same time last year.

The report provides an interesting insight into the split between new and second hand home sales, which shows that second-hand home prices grew by 8.8% in the second quarter of this year,

while new home prices grew by 4.2%.

Commenting on the report, Trevor Grant chairperson of Irish Mortgage Advisors, says the biggest driver of Irish house price inflation is the shortage of homes coupled with the pent-up demand for housing and an expanding population. While the increase in housing completions is encouraging, they are still nowhere near where they need to be.

The shortage of new homes available to private buyers means many first-time buyers are bidding against trader-uppers/movers, which in turn is driving up second-hand prices. It's becoming increasingly common for properties to sell for 20%+ above asking prices.

As we now approach the September

selling season, Ted Healy of DNG expects the pace of the market to continue. “We are still experiencing a shortage of stock and have seen second properties sell on the market in record time for record prices. For anyone considering selling their property, the time is certainly right.”

Passport Applications KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

What is the quickest way to renew my passport?

The Passport Service processes Passport Online applications as a priority. Applying online is the fastest way of getting your passport. Simple online renewals take around 10 working days to process. Complex online renewals take around 15 working days to process. A complex renewal is when you are asked to submit extra documentation, or you are changing information on your passport. You could be changing your name or reporting a lost or stolen passport. If you are applying by post, you should allow at least 8 weeks for your application to be processed (not including postage times). This period may be extended at certain times of the year due to increased application numbers. Updates on services and the latest turnaround times are available on the Passport Service's website https:// www.ireland.ie/en/dfa/passports/ My partner is applying for a Passport for the first time. Can this be done on-line?

Passport Online is open to all applicants. First time applications are the most complex as all documents need to be verified. You need access to a printer for your first passport application. You must give an email address. You must also be able to pay by credit or debit card. You will have to send original documents to the Passport Service after you have completed the online application form. You must include a digital photo as part of your online application.

When your online application is completed, you will be asked to print an

Identity Verification Form.

If you are applying in Ireland, a member of the Garda Síochána must sign this form. If you are applying outside Ireland, the form can be witnessed by a person in one of the occupations listed on the Passport Online site, or on the verification form itself.

Once the application is completed, you will be asked to print an Application Cover Page. This will list the documents you have to send to the Passport Service. All documents sent must be original. The Passport Service recommends that you use a secure method of postage for sending your documents. A postage label is generated as part of your application (if you are applying in Ireland).

If you are applying outside Ireland, you should use a reliable postal service. In some countries, the local postal services are not reliable. In this case, you can submit your documents to your nearest Irish Embassy.

Online applications are completed in approximately 20 working days for first-time applicants.

Q. Can I apply using a paper application?

Yes. You can get an application form APS 1 from your local Citizens Information Centre, Post Office or Garda Station. It is not possible to download a form. Paper-based applications will take significantly longer than Passport Online. You should use Passport Online if you have travel plans within the next 3 months.

If you are applying by post, you should allow at least 8 weeks for your application to be processed (not including

postage times). This period may be extended at certain times of the year due to increased application numbers. Once you have made a paper-based application, it cannot normally be expedited, and the Passport Office cannot return your supporting documents to you before the application is complete.

Q. Can I apply for my passport in person at the Passport Office?

The counter service at the Passport Office is mainly designed to help people who need their passports urgently, and don’t have enough time to apply in other ways. In these cases, you should book an appointment with the Passport Office in Dublin or Cork. Applications made in person are more expensive than applying online or through Post Passport

Q. How much does it cost to apply for a passport?

Standard 10-year, 34-page passport

• Passport Online - €75 (+ €15 postage if you live outside Ireland)

• Post Passport - €80 (+€9.50 fee)

• In person - €95 plus an appointment fee depending on turnaround time needed1

Large 10-year 66-page passport

• Passport Online – €105 ((+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland)

• Post Passport - €110 (+€9.50 fee)

• In person – €125

An Post also offers a 'Family Application' option where up to 4 passport applications can be enclosed in one envelope. The additional charge for a Family Application is €16

Q. What happens if I lose my passport or it is stolen?

If you are an Irish citizen living in Ireland and you have lost your Irish passport, or it has been stolen, you must let the Passport Office know immediately and report the loss or theft to the Garda Síochána.

If you lose your passport or it is stolen abroad, you must contact the local police and request a written statement that you have reported the loss of your passport. The Passport Service will not provide you with a new travel document without a police report. In addition, you must contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate. They may be able to give you a replacement passport that will let you finish your trip or an emergency travel document that will get you home

If you are in a country where there is no Irish representation, you may contact an embassy or consulate of another EU member state. In some cases, the embassy or consulate of another EU Member State may issue you with an EU Emergency Travel Document (ETD).

Q. What happens if I need to renew my passport in an emergency?

The Passport Service will still offer a same-day emergency service if you need a passport due to a medical emergency or the death of a family member abroad.

Contact the Passport Service by phone 01 671 1633 or by webchat if you need a passport in an emergency.

For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo. ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

O’Connor expected to stay on as Kerry boss

After previously indicating that the 2025 season would be his last in the Kerry hot seat, Jack O’Connor is expected to make a dramatic U-turn and stay on as team manager for the 2026 campaign. Official confirmation of a new agreement with the county board is believed to be imminent.

The Dromid native was thought to be heading for the exit doors irrespective of how his side fared in the recent championship. Earlier in the season, many observers – this writer included – had posited that there would be no point in O’Connor staying on, even if Kerry went all the way and won the All-Ireland. In many ways, winning Sam Maguire for the fifth time would have been the perfect way to bow out.

Of course, had Kerry fallen short for the third year in a row, the critics’ cries of ‘Jack out’ would have been extremely difficult to ignore.

As it turned out, Kerry did get the job done, clinching All-Ireland title number 39 with a memorable victory over Donegal in late July. It is not just the win itself but the spectacular nature of Kerry’s performances from the quarter-finals on that have shifted the landscape in O’Connor’s favour.

Had the team fallen over the line, O’Connor’s detractors would still have been clamouring for change. But this All-Ireland triumph was so emphatic, and O’Connor, his management team and his players so clearly outclassed the

competition, the detractors currently don’t have a leg to stand on.

Put simply: before the superb wins over Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal, it was felt that there was no reason for Jack to stay. Now, there is no real reason for him to go.

Add to the mix that players like Paudie and David Clifford and Kerry GAA Chairman Patrick O’Sullivan have publicly suggested that they want O’Connor to remain at the helm and it seems inevitable that the 64-year-old retired school teacher will once again be donning the bainisteoir polo shirt when intercounty action resumes next January.

Going back-to-back is extremely difficult – only Jim Gavin has managed it in the modern era – but it is widely felt that the pieces are in place for Kerry to be a serious force again in 2026. The new rules suit them and several key players are entering their prime years – most notably GOAT candidate David Clifford, who turns 27 at the start of next year.

A sixth title would bring O’Connor level with Gavin as the second most successful county football manager of all time, and just two short of the great Mick O’Dwyer who won eight titles between 1975 and 1986.

Previously it was felt there was no reason for Jack to stay. Now, there is no real reason for him to go.

Rathmore and Spa vying for spot in next round

There is plenty to play for in the final round of group games in the Senior, Intermediate, Junior Premier and Junior Club Championships, which take place this weekend across the county.

Let us remind ourselves of the format of the 2026 Senior Club Championship. The two group winners with the best record will advance directly to the semi-finals. The third group winner will join all three of the second place teams in a sort of preliminary semi-final round; two matches with the victors going through to the last four. With two wins from two against Spa and Rathmore, Dr Crokes are currently the only team who are guaranteed to top their pool (Group 3). Rathmore and Spa face each other on Sunday at 4pm in Rathbeg with the winner securing second place. A draw will suffice for the hosts.

In Group 1, Na Gaeil and Austin Stacks have two points apiece with Na Gaeil heading to Templenoe on Saturday (6pm) for the final fixture. Victory will see them top the group with Stacks then finishing in second. Templenoe’s

inferior points difference (-13 versus +3 for Na Gaeil) means they need to win big to sneak into the top two.

We have similar set of circumstances in Group 2 with Kenmare and Dingle favourites to advance. Both are on two points. Milltown/Castlemaine could throw a spanner in the works with a home win against Kenmare but like Templenoe they are up against it in terms of points difference. The 2023 intermediate champions are 11 points worse off than Dingle in second. You never know what might happen but the signs are pointing towards Stacks, Na Gaeil, Kenmare, Dingle, Dr Crokes and the winners of Rathmore v Spa moving on to the next phase of the competition.

INTERMEDIATE

In Group 1 of the Intermediate Club Championship, Fossa and Kilcummin are already through to the quarter-finals having won both of their fixtures to date. The East Kerry rivals will meet in Kilcummin on Sunday at 1pm to see who finishes top. It’s all to play for in Group 2 with Laune Rangers on three points, Ballydono-

ghue and Legion on two, and Listowel Emmets on one. Ballydonoghue host Legion on Saturday at 2pm; the winners will qualify for the next round. Rangers only need a draw to ensure their progress but defeat would eliminate them if Legion or Ballydonoghue win. A draw in that game and victory for Emmets would leave all four sides tied on three points, and little (currently) to separate them on points difference. In Group 3, Glenflesk are through to the quarters and a win or a draw versus An Ghaeltacht will see them secure top seeding. Desmonds can catch An Ghaeltacht in second if they beat St Mary’s, who are already out, but points differ-

ence favours the Gaeilgeoirs. Group 4 could go down to the wire with Beaufort on four points and Gneeveguilla and Kerins O’Rahillys both on two. Rahillys travel to Beaufort knowing that victory could give them a chance, but if Gneeveguilla beat Glenbeigh-Glencar at home there would be a three-way tie on four points. The Tralee club would need a massive win to improve their dismal points difference, which currently stands at -17. Beaufort (+13) and Gneeveguilla (+10) will be hard to catch if that’s what it comes down to.

JUNIOR PREMIER

The picture in the Junior Premier is far clearer with five teams already sure of their places in the quarters. Ballyduff, Duagh, Listry, St Senan’s and Ballymacelligott all have 100% records so far and they won’t be caught in their respective groups.

In the Junior, Beale, Knocknagoshel, Kilgarvan and Lispole are all through with the remaining quarter-finalists to be decided.

‘Despite my love for Kerry, I do not show it’

In Part 2 of Eamonn Fitzgerald’s interview with Jerry Grogan, the Croke Park Stadium announcer discusses Amhrán na bhFiann, minor curtain-raisers and his native Cahersiveen

How does Croke Park decide to ask for a minute’s silence for a recently deceased GAA member of competing teams?

There is an established process. The request may start with a club informing its county secretary, who forwards it to the Communications Department in Croke Park, which vets it and the Ard Stiurthóir sanctions it if all is in order.

Even with the best planning, the unexpected happens…

Thankfully, I have had no major emergencies, but we are prepared for emergencies if something unplanned happens on match day.

What happens when a young supporter is separated from his parents in the euphoria of post-match celebrations, or in a medical emergency such as a cardiac arrest?

There are dedicated teams of stewards available, and they are qualified and welltrained to deal with emergencies. There’s a dedicated safety announcer so that I’m free to concentrate on the game as incidents are dealt with.

How do you do your job when your native Kerry are in the final?

It is great to see Kerry there. Despite my love for my home county, I do not show any bias.

I have noticed in recent announcements that you specifically ask for reverence during the singing of Amhrán na bhFiann.

It has been a concern for the GAA for

IMPORTANT JOB:

some time, with players breaking away before our national anthem is completed. While one understands that players will be nervous on such big occasions, reverence for all of our national anthem is what we expect.

Why are exuberant young followers not allowed onto the pitch, as I have seen in some other GAA venues?

My gut reaction is to let them on and dream of glory, as we do with Cumann na mBunscol games. However, with huge crowds, it becomes dangerous. People can be crushed and seriously injured. It can get out of hand and is a frightening experience. There have been insurance claims, many of which are not genuine.

I have made the case in this publication in the past why I believe the minor final should be played before the senior final. It is such a big day for minor players, their parents and their clubs. Also, LGFA will benefit from playing before big games.

It was a great experience for the minors on the big day, playing in front of huge crowds for the first time. It is lovely in theory, but it does happen when the opportunity arises, such as at Nowlan Park (Kilkenny) this year, before an attendance of 20,000. Another big concern is that minors now are under 17. Not having them in the curtain-raiser frees up a lot of tickets for the competing senior

counties. With massive demand for tickets now, this has to be a major factor.

The GAA has been central to Irish life for 141 years and has survived and thrived despite World Wars, the War of Independence, the Civil War and other huge challenges such as managing Covid. What are the big challenges facing the GAA in the future?

We must ensure that our games are attractive to spectators. Hurling was and is always attractive, but the football was in the doldrums until Jim Gavin and his FRC addressed that so successfully. Spectators are flooding back to football games.

The GAA is competing with all sports, especially soccer and rugby, so we have to be in the marketplace.

Why is Croke Park (and some other venues) given over to concerts during peak summer times?

Finance. It is very costly to run the GAA, promote our games and funnel money down to grassroots to support the clubs

and provide state-of-the-art facilities. Many people look at the cost of tickets for the All-Ireland finals. €100 is expensive, especially for families, and they wonder where all that money goes. From my experience, the GAA grant aids so much more than just its games, especially all those other wonderful GAA initiatives.

Do you ever return to Kerry?

I have a place in Cahersiveen and do get down home, maybe not as often as I would like with GAA commitments in Dublin. My dear wife Billie passed away in November ‘23, and I find it harder to go down on my own. Cahersiveen is always close to my heart. Along with a great man, Johnny Boyle, we did great sporting and educational exchanges between Cahersiveen and Donaghmede. One of the highlights was watching Vinny Murphy play against Maurice Fitzgerald. They were both superstars and met at senior level in Thurles on the day Maurice scored his wonder point! Mick O’Dwyer, Mick O’Connell, Jacko, Ger Lynch, and a host of great Dubs were so good to the children and gave them memories for life from those great trips.

When is your next gig?

I do the announcing in Parnell Park for the Dublin Club Championship, and I am looking forward to the Oasis concert in Croke Park on August 16 and 17 where I will be linking up with the sound people for the promoters. That is a fabulous sight looking down from the press box.

Thanks for your time, Jerry. May your voice continue to be heard as you look forward to celebrating the centenary of Cumann na mBunscol in 2028. You are true to the advice of WB Yeats: ‘Think like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people.’ Go gcúitítear do shaothar leat ar son CLG.

Out went established clubs like Bohs, Shelbourne, Derry City and Waterford while Shamrock Rovers, St Patrick's Athletic, Drogheda United, Galway United, Sligo Rovers, Cork City, Finn Harps and, would you believe it, Kerry FC went into the hat for draw for the quarter-finals of the prestigious FAI Cup on Tuesday.

The babes of LOI soccer will face Sligo Rovers in the last eight with the tie to be played in Mounthawk Park on the week ending September 14.

After a bad run recently in the league, Kerry shocked Cobh Ramblers 2-0 at home in Mounthawk to make it to the quartersfor the first time ever. Goals by Cian Brosnan in the 9th minute and substitute Joe Adams in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot did the trick. Cobh Ramblers' strategy did not work, and they ended the game with just nine men.

Dare to dream? Why not? Think of Home Farm in 1975 when they shocked Bohs to win the cup.

Shamrock Rovers are the kingpins of the FAI Cup with 25 titles. I saw some of them when their home venue was Glenmalure Park in Milltown. That was the era of Paddy Mulligan, Johnny Fulham, Bobby Gilbert, Frank O’Neill, Liam Tuohy and Tony Ward, the Irish rugby international from Greystones. Alas, they vacated that site in 1987, picking up a big tab from a property developer. They moved to Tallaght Stadium, owned and run by South Dublin County Council. When I look at Tallaght Stadium and think of the glory days in Milltown,

Kerry’s FAI Cup dream lives on

I recall the evocative lyrics of Pete St. John’s song 'Dublin in the Rare Old Times,' which he wrote for the Dublin City Ramblers and was later popularised by The Dubliners.

Camogie very much on the rise

It was a case of so near and yet so disappointing for the Kerry camogie team in their recent All-Ireland Intermediate final as they lost to Offaly by 14 points to 11.

Offaly were hot favourites, but Kerry tested them all the way. Offaly shot 13 wides as they were pressured by a tenacious Kerry defence.

The plus side of this defeat is that camogie is very much on the rise, and Killarney Camogie is doing tremendous work in recent years in developing young talent. That will reap dividends.

Dr Crokes had a very strong camogie team in the late 30s and 40s, with prominent stars such as Nellie Myers, Peg Murphy

and Rita Looney. The sport faded away for several years until the late 60s when Paul O’Sullivan and Diarmuid Moynihan, both now deceased, trained Killarney Camogie to win the Kerry Championship. The tremendous enthusiasm of Mary Treacy kept it alive until she passed away and then came the upsurge of camogie in Killarney at all levels. Best of luck to all concerned in this great crusade.

ROWING

‘Cause Dublin keeps on changing, and nothing seems the same The Pillar and the Met have gone, the Royal long since pulled down As the grey unyielding concrete makes a city of my town Can Kerry FC do the incredible? Walk before you run, but there is a pep in their step, and we’ll be following their fortunes and their dream.

It is a great achievement to win a county title in any sport, more testing again to win at national level, but coming tops in the home international stage is rare but beautiful to be savoured by all concerned. Congrats to the Muckross RC, whose members returned with two gold and one bronze in recent home internationals.

Comhgháirdeas to all concerned on this outstanding achievement in Killarney’s oldest sport. Yes, that is not a typo. many think the GAA is the oldest sport in Killarney, but rowing was there long before 1886.

RACES

We are set for three great days at the races in Killarney, starting today and running right through to Sunday. Enjoy!

Clifford picks up Player of the Month award after July heroics

Fossa superstar David Clifford may be on club duty now that the intercounty season has ended but he was back in Dublin this past week to pick up his PwC Footballer of the Month award for July. Clifford capped another majestic county campaign with two wonderful performances in the final few weeks of the season. His typically brilliant goal proved to be a crucial moment in the All-Ireland semi-final against Tyrone, with Kerry’s talisman contributing 1-9 in total. His shooting ability from beyond the two-point arc was invaluable again in the final as Kerry defeated Donegal to secure their first title since 2022. The St Brendan’s teacher kicked 0-9 as the finished the 2025 Championship as top scorer with a record tally of 8-62.

The 26-year-old is considered a shoo-in for another All-Star when the ceremony his held later this year with a third Footballer of the Year award also expected to follow.

Tipperary’s John McGrath is the Hurler of the Month for July after he scored 3-4 in two matches: 1-2 against Kilkenny

Rowers represent Fossa with pride up north

Over 60 representatives of Fossa Rowing Club made the long trip to Antrim last weekend to take part in the All-Ireland Championships in Glenarm.

In total the club had 30 rowers taking part in 14 different crews. Fossa had 12 underage, seven men and nine women rowers, as well as three coxes in Patie Tagney, Laura Whelton and Conor Coffey. Declan Madden, Donal Daly and Kieran Coffey were on hand to look after everyone over the weekend. Declan and Tim brought the boat to Glenarm – not without drama, however, as they suffered a puncture on the nine-hour trip on Thursday!

The U14 boys and girls were the youngest crews representing the club, and their

efforts on the day were a testament to all the hard work done over the winter by Declan, Kieran, Steven, Donal, Conor, Alison and Laura. They represented the club with pride and thoroughly enjoyed their trip, which was topped off with a visit to Giant’s Causeway.

Fossa Rowing Club expressed thanks to their committee and logistics team behind the scenes for gathering equipment, sorting the boat, and getting everything ready to send the club en masse to the other side of the isle. They also thanked the parents and supporters who cheered their crews on; the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation and Kerry Coastal Rowing Federation for their hard work; and, of course, the rowers who were fantastic ambassadors for the club while up North.

in the semis 2-2 in the decider against Cork. McGrath becomes the first Tipperary hurler to win the monthly PwC GAA/ GPA award since his brother Noel won the accolade in August 2019.

Dublin footballer Kate Sullivan and Galway camogie player Aoife Donohue have been named the PwC GPA Players of the Month for July/August in their respective codes.

Uachtarán CLG Jarlath Burns said: “"It has been a fantastic few weeks for the Gaelic games codes with the final destinations for the 2025 titles all decided after huge games and some incredible individual and team performances.

"Aoife Donohue excelled in Galway’s dramatic late camogie final win over Cork while Kate Sullivan shone brightest in Dublin’s impressive win over Meath scoring four points.

"On the male front, David Clifford’s sensational form was a major factor in Kerry’s run to another All-Ireland title while John McGrath’s 2-2 in Tipperary’s hurling final success over Cork saw him singled out for special and deserved praise.

"Congratulations to all four award winners on accolades earned at the peak point in the respective championships and a special word of acknowledgement to our partners in these awards, the GPA and PwC."

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR: A dramatic finish to our home game against Listowel Emmets in Round 2 of the Intermediate Club Championship. Leading by three points heading into injury time we conceded a goal which put the visitors in Direen on level pegging. Sensing a win the North Kerry team piled forward but at a cost, they failed to keep the requisite number in defence in their half and David O'Sullivan popped the resultant free over to wrestle back the initiative. But further drama was to ensue as Listowel attacked deep in stoppage time and won a free, to be taken outside the two-point arc. It was a valiant effort but drifted left and went with it was the Fealesiders hopes of a win. It was a competitive game throughout with three points being the biggest advantage in the first half. It was Ryan O'Grady and David O’Sullivan who did a lot of the heavy lifting with support from Eoghan O’Sullivan. The 0-7 to 0-5 half time lead was quickly erased by a rapid start by Listowel which yielded 1-1 and it took a superb Brian Kelly free to put the teams back on parity. The O’Sullivans kept the game at parity with Listowel converting from distance and just as it looked like Darragh Lyne and Ryan O'Grady had given their side a firm leg up in the game, Emmets again struck for a goal. With the sides at parity there was plenty of excitement right to the final whistle, with the shrill of the referee's whistle lending to a gasp of

relief from the home faithful. Final Score Killarney Legion 0-16 Listowel Emmets 2-9. The final group game is now a must win, with Ballydonoghue the opponent at the North Kerry venue. Throw in on Saturday August 23rd is at 2pm.

SENIOR LADIES: Our senior ladies welcomed neighbours Fossa to Derreen on Sunday for the opening round of the Junior A championship. In a fiercely competitive encounter the home team started strongly taking a 0-03 to 0-01 lead early on. Fossa, playing with the aid of a slight breeze, came back to hit the net only for the home side to respond in kind through the boot of Ciara Randles. Both teams exchanged further points to leave the half time score at Legion 1-06 to Fossa 1-03. Legion added the first two points of the 2nd half to extend the lead before Fossa hit the net again. Legion got a stranglehold on the game at this stage kicking further points before Aine Devlin hit the net for the home team to extend the lead further. As the game wore on the home team remained in control to the points on a scoreline of Legion 2-15 Fossa 2-05. Team: 1. Amy Walshe 2. Meabh Healy 3. Kiah Doona, 4. Abbie Cronin 5. Orianne McGillycuddy 6. Zena Shine 7. Aine Fitzgerald 8. Kate McCarthy (0-05) 9. Eve Coffey 10. Shania Costello (0-01) 11. Liz Mohan (0-06) 12. Emily Brosnan 13. Andrea Murphy (0-01) 14. Dr Crokes GAA

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 1:14 Rathmore 0:15. Our Senior Footballers showed great grit and determination as they overcame Rathmore by the narrowest of margins, with a late Alex Hennigan goal proving decisive in an enthralling East Kerry clash. The contest was tight throughout. Playing against a breeze in the opening half, we edged a 0:06 to 0:05 lead at the break. A fine second half 2-pointer from David Shaw, and the experience of Brian Looney and Tony Brosnan (who shared 8 points between

them) helped to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Trailing by 2 with just 5 minutes remaining, we defended well and kept our composure. The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when super sub Alex Hennigan latched on to a high ball in from Gavin O'Shea and drove the ball passed Shane Ryan in the Rathmore goal. Our opposition pushed hard for an equaliser; however the scoreboard remained in our favour. Our club championship campaign continues with either a quarter final or semi-final place.

EK JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL: Dr. Crokes 1:18 Rathmore 1:08. We claimed the East Kerry Junior League with a commanding 10-point win over Rathmore. After early wides from both sides, it was Liam Kelliher who opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The key moment of the half came in the 25th minute when Aodhan Burns stuck the ball into the back of the Rathmore net. By the break, we led 1:06 to 0:03. We pushed on in the second half with fine scores from Aodhan Burns, Liam Kelliher, Kacper Robak, Brendan Falvey and Sean Fitzgerald. Rathmore battled hard and grabbed a late goal in the 25th minute of the second half. The strength and depth of our lads proved decisive as they ran out deserving winners.

Fossa GAA

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: With the thunder rolling in the distance, Fossa took on Firies in the second round of the Intermediate Championship on Saturday evening. We did get a lightening start when David Clifford and Emmett O’Shea landed two pointers to put Fossa four clear after three minutes. Firies responded with four unanswered scores to level matters after ten minutes of play. Again, the dynamic duo of David and Emmett landed two pointers to push them ahead before Emmett O’Shea struck for a crucial goal in the 18th minute. Firies are a good side and never gave up, kicking four points in reply to leave the half time score,

Fossa 1-9, Firies 0-10. On the resumption of play, a high ball from Emmett O’Shea into the square ended up in the Firies net to deflate the visitors somewhat. Fossa had long periods of possession in this half, and this paid dividends when Ted O’Gorman crashed home a goal from an impossible angle in the seventh minute to leave Firies with a mountain to climb. The Fossa defence were solid in not conceding any goal chances and they were winning some good possession around the middle third with Darren Ryan prominent. David Clifford added a brace of fabulous two pointers to put Fossa ten points up after 20 minutes of play. Firies, to their credit didn’t give up and kicked three points on the bounce but Ted O’Gorman added a score before a brilliant flick by Eoin Talbot put Matt Rennie clear to crash home a goal to seal the win for Fossa on a score of 4-16 to 0-18. They are away to Kilcummin next weekend in the final group game.

U14: East Kerry U14 League Division 1Round 3 - Fossa 3-08 Rathmore 3-08. Our U14 boys travelling to Rathbeg to play the locals in Round 3 of the East Kerry League after suffering earlier round defeats to both Firies and Kenmare. Rathmore is never an easy place to get a result, so our lads knew this would be a real test of their mettle and resolve, especially being down a few key players for this crucial encounter. Fossa started brightly with two excellent long-range points from our towering midfielder Gerry Moroney and then our ace target man, Ross Cronin finished to the net to give Fossa a slight advantage at the half time break with the score line reading Fossa 1-05, Rathmore 1-02. The home side made a few astute changes at the interval, and they quickly took the upper hand when they hit Fossa for two quick goals on the resumption. However, Fossa briefly halted the host's momentum when Ryan Lynch struck for an opportunist goal. The game was now in the melting pot, the exchanges were frantic and there was a real edge to the proceedings. The referee even decided to call a water break to allow both sides to draw breath. As the game drew to its conclusion, Rathmore held a four-point lead, and it looked like they had calmed the visitor's storm. Fossa had other ideas however, and when Fossa sharpshooter Ryan Lynch scored his 2nd goal of the game, it left just the minimum between these two great rivals. Fossa then proceeded to work a wonderful equalising point, following an excellent passing movement involving 8 players all the way up the pitch, there at the end of this passage of play was full back Shea Driver who crashed the ball over the bar and salvaged a well-earned draw for his side.

Kilcummin GAA

SENIORS: Well done to the Senior team on securing an Intermediate Football Championship Quarter Final spot following their 0-16 to 0-10 victory over John Mitchel’s in the Kerry Petroleum Club

Championship Intermediate Round 2 Group 1 clash on Saturday night. Despite leading by 3 points on several occasions in the first half the home side proved difficult to shake and Kilcummin took a 0-7 to 0-6 lead with them to the break. In the second period the team produced a very professional performance delivering the scores when needed and reeled off 5 unanswered points in the third quarter to hold a double score lead by the 40th minute (0-12 to 0-6), John Mitchell’s didn’t throw in the towel and began to register a number of fine scores themselves but James Foley’s side held strong until the final whistle. The final group game will see the visit of Fossa on Sunday for a 1pm throw in time with the winners securing top spot in the group. Best of luck to the players and management. Patrons are advised to come early due to the expected busy nature of the fixture.

MINORS: We had several players involved in the East Kerry Minor football team that defeated Rathmore in the opening round of the Keane’s SuperValu County Minor football county championship. Well done to Zach Cronin, Dylan Cronin, Dara Moynihan, Jack Ahern and Cian Stack and Shane O’Sullivan who is part of the management team.

UNDER 16: Best of luck to our under 16B team who take on Na Gaeil on Thursday 21st August at Austin Stack Park in the Division 10 County Final. Great to see the lads getting to play in such an icon venue. Please note there will be a €5 admission fee (cash only/u16s free)

UNDER 14: Well done to the under 14A team who dug deep to defeat Scartaglin 3-18 to 5-10 in the 4th round of the East Kerry League this evening. It was an entertaining game with some fine football played by both sides right up to the end. CONGRATULATIONS also to the under 14B team that travelled to Spa and came away with a narrow win. Great progress being made by both teams.

KERRY DEVELOPMENT: It was a busy weekend for our Kerry development player who featured heavily on Saturday in several competitions. Well done to Oran Lynch, Daragh Keane captain and Cian Maher who were part of U15 Kerry South team that won their All Ireland final against Meath in Fethard. Cian Stack lined out at centre back with the U16 Kerry South team that played Cork. While Darragh Fleming and Max Moynihan were part of the U14 Kerry South team that travelled to Offaly to play Louth, Wexford and Offaly.

SYMPATHIES: The Kilcummin team of 1973 that visited The U.S.A. in July of 1974 were saddened to hear of the passing of Larry O’Connor, in The U.S.A. His family home in the Bronx was the team’s base camp for the duration of our 3 Week tour to New-York, Philadelphia and Boston. We extend the team’s sympathies to his wife Joan (Nee Lucey) Mastergeeha, and son Larry, her Sister Nora, Breda, Margaret, The O’Connor Family New-York, and

the extended Lucey and O’Sullivan relations in Kilcummin. Ar dheis de go Raibh a Anam dilis.

Glenflesk GAA

CONDOLENCES: Glenflesk GAA community were deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of our former club player Paudie O’Rahilly. Paudie lined out with the club at all levels from underage up to Senior winning East Kerry Junior League and Bill Tangney Cup titles. A long-lasting memory from the 2018 E.K. campaign is Paudie’s left legged goal v Legion, a bullet to the top corner the recounting of which he relished. In 2022 he was a member of the Glenflesk Div 6 team that won promotion to Div 5 in the Credit Union Senior County League. Paudie was a popular team mate on all his teams, he loved the game of football and his enthusiasm on the field endeared him to all. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Margaret, Liam, Valerie, Maureen, Nathan and all his family and friends. We also extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Cormac Williams, Brewsterfield. Cormac kindly gave Glenflesk GAA the use of his field in Brewsterfield to assist with winter training a number of years ago. He was a strong advocate for mental health services and worked tirelessly for clients and nurses for many years. May they Rest in Peace.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Castleisland Desmonds 3-11 Glenflesk 1-21. Helped by 1-08 from man of the match Tommy Bowler, Glenflesk ensured they will be playing in the Quarter Finals of this year’s County Intermediate Football Championship, coming away from Castleisland with a 4-point win, after a high scoring and gripping encounter. A minutes silence was held before the game in honour of the late Paudie O’Rahilly, who tragically passed away during the week. After drawing with An Gaeltacht last weekend, Desmonds knew they needed a win at home badly. With midfielders Adam O’Donoghue and Adam Donoghue thriving, they raced into a 1-03 to 0-1 lead. O’Donoghue getting the goal with a fine low finish, after arriving on to the ball at speed, a tactic that caused Glenflesk problems all game. Glenflesk’s only 2 scores early came from Darragh Roche frees for technical infringements. They began to get control on Desmonds kickouts though, and Bowler kicked a hat trick of 2-point efforts to wake them from their sluggish start. Luke Crowley added another 2 pointer, as Glenflesk began to use the wind to their advantage. Down the other end Cian H O’Connor got a 2 pointer of his own, before another fast attack from Desmonds saw PJ Curtin palm the ball into the open net. This meant that for all Glenflesk’s long range accuracy they only held a 2-point lead at the break, with Desmonds looking a goal threat when they upped the pace of their attack. Isaac Brosnan got Desmonds off to the perfect start to the second half with a point inside the

first minute. Glenflesk replied with points from Crowley and Jeff O’Donoghue. Luka Brosnan then received a black card. Glenflesk added further points from Ian and Dylan Roche during Brosnans absence. Just as he was to return, the home side won a penalty when Dennis O’Connor was pulled down. O’Donoghue buried the spot kick and then followed up with a booming 2 pointer to put his side back ahead. Darragh Roche then cleverly found space in a tight area, to draw Glenflesk level. 3 chances passed from long range frees to put Desmonds ahead again. It was Glenflesk who took the lead back, with Crowley finishing another direct run with a fine score. From the kickout, Jeff O’Donoghue landed the perfect pass into Bowlers path, and he completed his superb day, with an unstoppable shot, past Steven Bartlett. Desmonds will rue late misses that would have put them ahead, but they still have hope going into the final round. For Glenflesk, a chance to top the group comes along against An Gaeltacht at home.

Then it was on to the Gleneagle Hotel, for an evening of entertainment, anchored brilliantly by MC Donal Barry, and the brilliant staff at the Gleneagle Hotel, to honour all those who have done such tremendous work for East Kerry GAA over the last century, and the continuing on of their legacy well into the future. BLACKWATER: Finally it would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the true devastation that was visited on the River Blackwater recently - the complete loss of aquatic life in a near 30 kilometre stretch of the river, owing to an as yet unknown cause. Presently analysis of both the water samples and dead fish removed from the location is being undertaken - the rapid onset and severity of the symptoms present in the aquatic life in the location would point to a sudden and highly toxic event having taken place. The local Mallow Trout Anglers are foremost in our thoughts as it’s a vision of nightmares to have such a pristine fishery wiped out in this manner. It is indeed a wake-up call to the vulnerability and fragility of our waters and the need to protect and nurture them has never been more urgent.
