Call for lifebuoys on River Flesk after tragedy

A friend of a young man who drowned in the River Flesk this summer is calling on Kerry County Council to install lifebuoys along the riverbank near the Killarney Athletic Grounds.

The appeal comes after the death of Padraig (Paudie) O’Rahilly, 28, of Calfmount, Headford, who got into difficulty in the river on August 12.

Emergency services were called to the Woodlawn area shortly after 3pm following reports of a man in trouble in the water. Paramedics, fire crews, a doctor and members of the public assisted, but Mr O’Rahilly was recovered from the water and pronounced dead a short time later.

Sinead Sajahan, whose partner survived

the same incident, said she wants to prevent another family from going through a similar loss.

“My partner Thomas and his best friend Paudie were enjoying the weather in the river when they were suddenly and unexpectedly caught in a current. Both fought desperately for their lives but unfortunately only one made it out,” she said.

Ms Sajahan said the area is used daily by players, families and children yet lacks basic water safety equipment.

“The River Flesk is a beautiful part of our community, but like all rivers it can be unpredictable and dangerous. Every year lives are put at risk in fast-moving waters — accidents can happen in an instant. These simple, inexpensive devices can mean the difference between life and death,” she added.

She said she will continue to push the local authority to act.

“I will fight and push my hardest to be heard because the longer something is not being done the quicker someone could tragically lose another life again.”

Focus Ireland submits amended plans for housing development

Focus Housing Association CLG, the housing arm of Focus Ireland, has lodged a fresh planning application with Kerry County Council seeking amendments to an already approved housing scheme at Woodlands Industrial Estate, Killarney Bypass Road.

Permission was originally granted under reference 21/205 for 67 residential units on the site. The revised application keeps the total number of homes at 67 but proposes several changes to the design and layout.

The basement would be reconfigured to include water and attenuation tanks, a lift pit and an ESB substation. On the

ground floor, bicycle parking would increase to 136 spaces and the bin storage area would be altered. Car parking would reduce from 80 to 74 spaces, still providing four accessible bays. The amount of communal open space would drop from 719 square metres to 375 square metres following the removal of a roof terrace. Internal layouts and circulation on each floor would also change, with a proposed mix of 33 one-bedroom and 34 two-bedroom units.

According to the application, the total gross floor area of the development would increase by around 871.5 square metres. Kerry County Council will now consider the amended plans.

Bottle caps used to create portrait of Liam O’Connor

A well-known Killarney musician has been honoured in a striking new artwork made entirely from recycled bottle caps.

Local artist Elhaji Conde has created a mosaic portrait of his friend Liam O’Connor, the celebrated musician and performer.

The piece, titled The Art of Performing, shows Liam with his accordion and is made from 5,482 bottle caps collected locally.

“At first glance it’s the colours and textures that catch your eye, but when you look closer each cap feels like it has its

own story to tell, much like Liam’s music,” said Elhaji. “This artwork doesn’t just show Liam’s face, it captures his spirit. It’s a reminder that great music doesn’t simply disappear when the last tune is over. It carries on, inspiring people, sparking memories, and even turning up in unexpected forms like this mosaic portrait.” Liam O’Connor said he was “blown away” by the work.

Badminton rivals and friends face-off for first time in 40 years

History was made last weekend at the Munster Masters badminton tournament in Waterford when two players from Killarney met on court for the first time in over 40 years.

In the over-60 men’s doubles, Mike Lyne faced Paudie O’Mahony, who now lives in Cork. Both men first picked up a racket more than 50 years ago while attending the Presentation Monastery Primary

School, practising almost daily in the old Monastery Hall.

This time, Paudie came out on top, beating Mike 19-21, 21-10 and 21-14. Paudie took home the gold medal while Mike collected silver.

There was also success for Sinead Galvin, who won the women’s over-50 singles title and was runner-up in the doubles.

The Killarney Badminton senior club opened its new season this week, with juvenile sessions beginning on October 3.

St

Oliver’s traffic plan still awaits funding

The creation of a designated drop-off and pick-up point at St Oliver’s National School in Ballycasheen is dependent on the school receiving funding, a Kerry County Council official has confirmed.

The issue was raised at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting by Mayor Martin Grady, who asked for an update on the proposed project.

In a reply, a council official stated that a planning application for a new school car park, bus and car set-down areas has been submitted by the school and has received full planning approval. The official added that the council understands the work will proceed once the school has secured funding.

However, this is the exact same reply that the council gave in March 2024 meaning nothing has progressed in over a year.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser after the meeting, Mayor Grady said the current situation is "not good enough or

safe." With 700 pupils and staff, parents are forced to drop off children on the main road, leading to "several minor collisions."

Grady also highlighted the negative impact on residents and commuters, noting that the area experiences "gridlock every morning and evening."

He pointed out that the school has already been granted planning permission for further expansion and the setting back of a wall to create sufficient space for the drop-off point. Grady has requested that the council write to the relevant government departments to "expedite the issue before something serious happens."

Parking debate continues as 30 places lost since pandemic

The debate over the use of widened footpaths for outdoor dining versus reinstating them as car parking spaces was discussed at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Councillor Maura Moloney requested an update on the number of parking spaces that were removed to facilitate outdoor dining during the COVID-19 pandemic and how many have since been restored.

In a reply from a council official, it was stated that Killarney Municipal District, in conjunction with other groups, implemented the "Safe Streets project" in response to national COVID-19 guidance.

This project included adding to public footpaths to allow for social distancing and, later, outdoor dining.

The official noted that these footpath "build-outs" are still in place, "facilitating Killarney businesses" and providing "vibrancy and enrichment to residents and visitors."

According to the council, an initial 33 parking spaces were removed to accommodate outdoor dining. In the past eight months, the Killarney MD Office has removed three of these build-outs, and the spaces have been returned to car parking. The "Safe Streets project" measures are still under continuous review.

From New York to Killarney

Meet West End House’s new Creative Director

Susan Goodwillie has been appointed as the new Creative Director of West End House School of Arts. She succeeds Jessica Courtney Leen who recently stepped down after serving in the role for three years.

BACKGROUND

Originally from New Hampshire, which is located an hour north of Boston, Susan brings a diverse background to West End. She has lived in many places including LA, New York and Kenya. She moved to Ireland in 2020 and is now living in Knocknagoshel.

Susan discovered her love for acting at a young age. As a child, she moved frequently due to her father’s military job. When her family returned to New Hampshire, she wasn’t quite sure where she fit in. It was during this time where she found comfort in acting which would continue to influence her life to this very day. She earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre and later moved to Los Angeles where she appeared in two episodes of ER and Medium. She lived there for a year and described it as a very exciting time in her life.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

She decided to move to New York to further her theatrical career. She spent nine years in the Big Apple. She recalled: “It was exciting, I felt like I was in the middle of something. It can be very buzzy which is fun.”

Susan described it as a great privilege to be part of the New York theatre scene however it came with its challenges. She worked as a bartender while also attending auditions and she found the balance hard. She said: “I got what I assumed would be the acting job of my dreams. It was a beautiful play with a great company. I was working with exciting actors. It was supposed to run for four months. By the time we opened, we got bad reviews and the next day it was closed.”

She said that while sometimes people can put up with the unsteady lifestyle, she found it quite difficult and began to look at other possible avenues.

CAREER CHANGE

Susan and her friend co-founded a non-profit organisation. They launched an artist residency program and retreat on an organic farm located just an hour

away from New York City. It was designed to give actors, playwrights and creatives an affordable space to create their work.

“We were making something other people could utilise. It became something that people loved. My friend went on to run it successfully for another ten years. So many people came and made beautiful things there.”

Following that experience, she decided to return to college to pursue a master’s degree in social work. She later worked in a non-profit organisation supporting people who suffered with mental health issues. In her new job, Susan found that her acting background came full circle. The company allowed her to start up an open mic night for their clients to give them a social outlet. She reflected:

“I went to social work school because I wanted to be helpful, but I found that my skills as an actor were the most valuable thing I brought from my old life to my new one.”

MOVING TO IRELAND

She moved to Kenya where she worked in women’s advocacy work. She met her now husband Brian, who is from Dublin, while living there. They decided to move to Ireland and settled in Kerry. She worked as a General Manager for Teaċ Damsa, Michael Keegan Dolan's acclaimed dance company located in the West Kerry Gaeltacht before she moved to her new role in Killarney.

VISION

Susan said her responsibility as a Creative Director is to fulfil the mission and vision of the school to its highest potential.

She said: “The biggest priority is to give artistic opportunities to people of all ages. Those who want to try out acting and to see if it is something they would like to pursue in the future.”

Susan’s hopes for the future are filling classes, listening to what people want, creating new classes and finding avenues for people to grow in the different interests they have.

“For people who don’t identify with sport, it’s important for them to find something else that interests them. It might not necessarily be acting but it is a great doorway into a creative headspace.”

Susan believes it’s about the mission and the vision of the school and to reach as many young people and adults as possible so that they know the door is always open at West End School of Arts.

Killarney endurance runner

Seanie Clifford has completed one of the toughest tests ever attempted on Irish soil by running the entire 2,700km length of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Clifford is an ultra-runner, mountain guide and retreat organiser based in Killarney. Through retreats in Ireland and France he combines hiking, running, yoga and healthy food. “The most rewarding feeling is when people leave having stepped outside their comfort zone,” he says.

His Wild Atlantic Way run covered the equivalent of more than 64 marathons back-to-back, cementing his place

Killarney runner completes Wild Atlantic Way challenge

among Ireland’s top endurance athletes while highlighting the importance of mental health, community and resilience.

DONEGAL START

He began in Muff, Co. Donegal, on August 7 and arrived in Kinsale, Co. Cork,

30 days later, beating his own self-imposed deadline by hours. The route included more than 27,000 metres of climbing and an average of 90–100 kilometres per day. Clifford’s final time was 29 days, 15 hours and 5 minutes.

Clifford, known locally as “Seanie Run-

ner”, undertook the challenge to raise awareness of mental health and the benefits of outdoor activity. Despite meticulous planning, Clifford hit his lowest point in Kerry on day 21 near Cahersiveen. Severe sickness left him barely able to move. His partner Alicia said: “Any normal person would have

stopped. But Sean kept going, covering 70km in that condition.”

Local support proved vital. Members of the Kerry Way Ultra community gave him food, rest and encouragement. In Waterville, a festival organiser offered shelter on one of his darkest nights. These small gestures kept the challenge alive.

KINSALE FINISH

Recovery brought new tests. Crossing the Conor Pass and into Slea Head, Clifford faced storm-force winds. Fellow runners Ailis Brosnan and Niall Foley joined him for parts of the route. Brosnan called it “a quiet kind of legendary”. Foley, who is filming a documentary of the challenge, described Clifford as “a

man possessed”. By the end of the Kerry stages, Clifford had turned his suffering into momentum, showing how local roads can both break and build endurance athletes.

Clifford crossed the Kinsale finish line with just hours to spare before his 30day deadline. He had promised to return to Kerry to help at the Kerry Way Ultra race – and two days later he was back, volunteering at the event. Like polar explorer Tom Crean, Clifford showed that greatness can come from ordinary people prepared to go beyond their limits. “People think it’s about running,” he said. “But really, it’s about people. Kerry showed me that. I was broken here, but I was carried home too.”

Daly's SuperValu celebrates 30th anniversary on Park Rd

suppliers, including Muckross Ice Cream and De Róiste, offered tastings. Customers also had the chance to win spot prizes and giveaways.

The supermarket, which opened in 1995, was originally opened by soccer star Niall Quinn. It was later extended and revamped in 2003 with RTE's Ronan Collins cutting the ribbon.

Killarney Community College organised a retreat for their first-year students on Friday, September 12 designed to connect, inspire and prepare them for their academic journey.

The event was called 'KCC First Year Stepping Foward Event' and included icebreakers, a refreshing walk, active wellbeing time and an escape room challenge.

The day was full of opportunities

to learn, reflect and grow as individuals and as a group.

The students embraced every activity positively and bonded by supporting one another and showing the spirit of KCC.

Principal Ms. Loughnane noted the importance of giving students the tools to be aware of their own wellbeing, which she says is just as important as their academic success.

The Joy of Fostering

NICOLA AND JOHN’S

STORY

Fostering First Ireland has launched a new campaign to encourage foster care in Kerry.

Nicola and John, a young couple, had always talked about fostering. In 2022, they decided to finally take the leap and apply to foster with Fostering First Ireland. At the time, they already had two children, aged six and eleven. Nicola was at home full-time due to COVID-19, and they felt that now was the perfect time to open their home to children in care. “We love kids and the happiness they bring,” they share. “It’s unbelievable. The moment the first foster child came through the door, our lives changed completely.” Initially, they had some apprehensions. Nicola, says she is naturally a quiet person, she feared she wouldn’t have the strength to advocate for these children. But fostering transformed her. “These kids come into your life, and you find strength you never knew you had,” she reflects.

The couple were approved to foster siblings aged 0-5. They didn’t know when or who would come into their lives, but they soon got a call about a newborn due in just a few days. Without hesitation, they said yes. “She’s just magic,” they recall. About 10 months later, they received another call – her little brother was on the way. Keeping the siblings together felt deeply meaningful to them and something they were keen to do, despite having two under two! “It’s so lovely to see their bond and relationship grow,” Nicola says. “It’s also so good for our own children. Fostering has taught them empathy, kindness, and responsibility.”

Fostering First Ireland (FFI) has been a pillar of support for Nicola and John. “You’re never alone,” they emphasize.

“There’s a number in FFI to call 24/7, 365 days a year. Even though we’ve never had to use it, knowing it’s there is a great comfort.” Monthly support groups and therapy sessions also help them navigate the challenges and joys of fostering.

One of their favourite aspects of fostering is the little moments – family time spent on the play mat, watching their foster children form bonds and express love in small, beautiful ways. “Seeing our foster daughter kiss her little brother on the cheek is pure magic,” they say.

Fostering has doubled their family in just two years, from two children to four, and they have no regrets. “Keeping siblings together in foster care is something very special,” they emphasize.

Right now, there is an urgent need for more foster carers across Ireland. Many children require safe, loving homes, and there is a particular demand for carers willing to take in siblings, older children, and those with additional needs. Without enough foster families, siblings can be separated, making an already difficult situation even more distressing for the children involved.

Some people ask if it’s overwhelming. “Not at all,” they say. “It’s the best kind of busy.”

For anyone considering fostering, Nicola and John have one piece of advice: “Go with FFI. You won’t be disappointed. The support is incredible. You’re not just a number; everyone knows your name and your family. It feels like home.”

Fostering may have started as a dream for Nicola and John, but today, it’s their way of life – one filled with love, joy, and unforgettable moments.

Regatta cancelled due to forecast of stormy weather

The decision to cancel this year's Killarney Regatta Festival which is due to take place this Sunday at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, will come at no surprise to the rowing fraternity.

The 237th annual traditional regatta is now officially cancelled. The forecast is for strong winds (SW) and gusts of up to 55 km/h, with more rain throughout the day. Already the shore at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club has risen considerably, making it unsafe for boats mooring and travelling across from their respective boathouses.

This September Killarney has an average of 19 rainy days and around 117mm of rainfall! Well above yearly averages. But there is light at the end of the boat. The end of season rowing disco and selection of Regatta Queen will take place in Killarney Oaks Hotel on Thursday 25 September, doors open at 8.00pm, tickets are available from the rowing clubs €10. It is hoped to continue and set aside a date for the ‘Rowing Heritage Day’ in October, with the much anticipated ‘Mixed Heritage Race’ - ‘Muckross House Trustee

Cup’ and Blessing of Flesk Rowing Clubs racing boats “the Patricia” and “the Deirdre” – both historical boats raced for over 100 years on Lough Lein.

Last year's winners of The Mixed Heritage Race, Dinis Cottage will be hoping to defend their title. The winning crew included: Mike ‘Kenmare’ O’Sullivan, Cox, John B. Cronin, John Beazley, Kevin Tangney, Derry Doyle, Bill Lyne and Paschal Dower. Paddy Cronin, Chairman of Killarney Regatta Festival “ We have been unfortunate with the weather, we can only deal with the charts in front of us. Safety is our priority at all times. We wish to thank Killarney Golf and Fishing Club for their understanding, Cllr Martin Grady, the volunteers and suppliers for their cooperation, we appreciate all your help with keeping alive this unique Killarney traditional regatta. We hope to see you in great numbers for our Rowing Heritage Dayr.”

funeral planning and reception needs. Pastoral Care at UHK is delivered through visits by priests, pastoral coordinators and pastoral assistants, particularly in parishes without a resident pastor. The centenary event recognised the contribution of staff and volunteers who have supported patients and their families for generations.

From September 15 to October 12 th th Served from 1:30pm to 3:30pm €49.00 per person

My name is Luke Mangan.

I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

Kerry Football Club has a huge test on the night of October 5 as they will travel to Tallaght Stadium to face the biggest superpower in the country, Shamrock Rovers, who have won the FAI Cup 25 times.

This is massive for the entire county, and it is not getting the recognition it deserves. In a county recognised for GAA talent, there are also thirty-three talented men who will fight for their club, Kerry FC. Here in Ireland, we always talk about the big clubs abroad, such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, and both Madrid clubs, but we must also show pride to our local boys in green and appreciate the love we have locally for such an incredible group of players. In all honesty, I have only been to one Kerry FC game and that was when we beat Longford Town 1-0 this year, but even though Kerry left it late to find a winner, everybody in Mounthawk who was wearing green was all fully backing their local team. Kerry FC has some of the best support in the country, whether that is talking to each other about games or the fans at the games giving off an electric-like atmosphere. I think we are an incredibly underrated team, and even within our own county.

Here in The Kingdom, the conversation is always about the GAA, and don’t get me wrong, they are an incredible squad, but there is little-to-no conversation about our boys in Mounthawk Park.

UKNOWN

Three years ago, none of this youthful team were known in any way as sportspeople, but now they are facing an absolute giant of Irish football on national television.

Even in school, the conversation about football abroad has now shifted to our local club, but don’t get me wrong, we would still talk about the Champions League and all the ‘Big five leagues in

All soccer chat now about Kerry FC

Europe’, but now that Kerry have progressed so far, we are all discussing about how proud we are to be supporting this talented group of players.

Three years ago, nobody knew who these players were, but now these are like heroes to our county and are spoken about every day, perhaps they are also spoken about around the country, especially now in Dublin, as Shamrock Rovers are preparing to tackle Kerry.

Locally, Kerry has produced two Killarney players in 18-year-old attacking-midfielder and forward, Luke Doolan, and 24-year-old attacking-midfielder and forward, Ryan Kelliher.

Doolan was born on September 17, 2008, and began playing football with Killarney Athletic when he was five years old.

He played with Athletic until July 29 this year, when he signed for Kerry FC, but has yet to play any minutes.

The other Killarney man, Kelliher, was born on February 9, 2001, and began playing for Killarney Celtic when he was 11 years old.

Kelliher signed for Kerry FC’s Academy on February 1, 2020. But two years later, Ryan Kelliher returned to Killarney

Celtic, but only for one year and 15 days, as he then became a Kerry FC player.

The Boys in Green are sitting eighth in the First Division, but Rovers are sitting top of the First Division.

The game will be tough, but I am hoping that with all our support, Kerry will possibly manage to win but it will require a lot of work and effort.

DIFFICULT GAME

It will be a hard game for Kerry, and what will make it tougher is the fact that if there was only one table of the football clubs in Ireland, Rovers would be top, and The Kingdom would be ranked 18th out of 20.

In fairness to Rovers, they have some serious talent in their squad, and they were willing to spend big for these players. Ipswich Town academy graduate and midfielder, Matthew Healy, was purchased from Belgian side Francs Borains, in January this year for €450,000. Former Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate, as a defensive and attacking midfielder, Aaron McEneff, was signed from Perth Glory for €300,000 on New Year’s Day this year.

Finally, a goalkeeper was added by signing Oxford United’s, Ed McGinty, in Jan-

uary this year for €175,000.

In total, that is an incredible €925,000 spent by Rovers, and that is only on three players.

The squad of Shamrock Rovers is worth an astonishing €4.43 million, which is the highest market value for any club in the country.

For Rovers, native Tralee man, Gary O’Neill (not the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers boss), is likely to start when his team face his home county.

Unfortunately for The Kingdom, Kelliher is still injured due to a cruciate ligament injury, and the return date is unknown. In a major coup for the club, the game will be broadcast on RTÉ 2 with a 6pm kick-off.

I believe when Kerry travel to Tallaght, they will put in their best effort as they did against Sligo in a similar affair to Liverpool against AC Milan in 2005 when the Reds of Merseyside looked dead and buried at half-time but got three goals back and beat Milan.

Kerry will stay as strong as possible, but it will be an almighty challenge, and if they are to win, I believe they will scrape a 1-0 win with the inspirational Tralee man, Daniel Okwute, scoring late in the game.

CCPC issues recall on electric heaters in Ireland

5,000 mini electric heaters that were sold in Ireland are being recalled from consumers.

The De Vielle Dual Fan Electric Heaters were deemed unsafe. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued the recall this week after testing found that the front grill can break and expose live parts, putting users at risk of electric shock. Grainne

Griffin, CCPC Director of Communications, has warned people not to use their heaters. She said: “Tests carried out by our product safety team have revealed a serious risk of electric shock. If you own a small white fan heater you should check the brand and model of your heater immediately.” Consumers can return the heaters for a full refund. More information can be found on ccpc.ie.

Gardaí advise that car insurance is ‘not optional’ on social media

Gardaí took to social media this week to advise Irish motorists that car insurance is ‘not optional’. They conducted routine patrols in Dublin 8 when they came across a car that had been uninsured since April of last year. Gardaí found the owner of the vehicle; the driver thought insurance was ‘optional’. An Garda Síochána took to social media platform X with a simple message: “A few words of advice for all drivers: It’s not.” Motorists are required to have car insurance to drive on Irish roads. Insurance discs are issued when a policy is purchased, and these discs must be clearly displayed on your vehicle at all times. According to Citizens Information, driving without car insurance is punishable by a fine of up to €5,000, 5 penalty points or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months. In some cases, drivers be disqualified from driving instead of incurring penalty points.

Fota Wildlife Park issues update on endangered Red Panda cubs

The two endangered Red Panda cubs born in Fota are almost two months old now. Born on June 7, the cubs represent an important success for conservation efforts under the European Endangered Species Programme.

The wildlife park held a public competition to name the cubs which were officially announced this week. The young male has been named Momo, meaning 'dumpling' in Nepali, while the female cub is called Koshi, after a river in Nepal. The winning names, submitted by Charlie

Lynch from County Cork and Nuria Costa from County Limerick, were selected from over 1,000 entries. Although still very young and spending much of their time in the nesting box, Momo and Koshi have begun exploring their surroundings under the watchful care of their mother Suzi. Visitors may already spot the cubs in the early mornings, shortly after the Park opens, as they begin to explore under Suzi’s supervision. International Red Panda Day takes place on September 20 and Fota Wildlife Park is hosting an educational, fun Red Panda trail from September 20–28.

Gas Network Ireland hosted a tattoo parlour which provided a range of temporary tattoos. An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland’s independent electoral commission, was on site encouraging people to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election. The NPA Managing Director Anna May McHugh said they were delighted with the turnout and thanked An Garda Síochána and visitors for their co-operation during the three days.

Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show has been removed from the American airwaves indefinitely after he made comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Mr Kirk died on September 10 after being shot at a university in Utah. Kimmel said that Trump and his allies “hit some new lows over the weekend”. He said they were trying to “score political points” by “trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them”. He described the US President’s reaction to Kirk’s death as “odd” and compared it to how a four-year-old would mourn a goldfish. As a result, ABC pulled the show. President Trump took to social media to congratulate ABC for doing so and said:

“Kimmel has ZERO talent.” The US reaction to the cancelling of Jimmy Kimmel Live has been mixed; with some believing it has “censored free speech”, while others think it was the right thing to do.

Tribute to late Johnny Hickey at Rally Masters

A raffle winner for a passenger spin in a Colin McRae Subaru Impreza at the upcoming Rally Masters Ireland event has a special connection to the Killarney motorsport community.

The winner, Stephen Duffy from Cork, is a first cousin of the late Johnny Hickey, a much missed member of Killarney and District Motor Club who passed away suddenly in 2021.

The draw took place live on social media during an organisational meeting for the Rally Masters Ireland event last week.

The once off demo-style event will be held at Killarney Racecourse on Saturday, September 27. The event raises funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation and the LauraLynn Foundation.

When Stephen learned he had won the "once-in-a-lifetime" prize, his first thought was of his cousin.

"The man above was surely looking down on me, he definitely made this happen," Stephen said. "He'll get a great kick out of the fact that I am going to sit in an ex-Colin McRae car. We were both big Colin McRae fans and have Colin McRae Memorabilia up on the wall at both our houses.”

Stephen and Johnny shared a love for rallying and mountain biking. Stephen remembers cycling with Johnny as a child to watch local rallies. The two were more than cousins, sharing a close bond and a lot of interests.

Needing a race suit and helmet for the event, Stephen contacted Johnny's

wife, Jennifer.

"When I rang Jennifer and told her the news, she said straight away that I had to take Johnny's suit and helmet," Stephen recalled. "A piece of Johnny would have to do this special event."

The Rally Masters Ireland event will celebrate iconic rally cars from the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s. The prize, a passenger seat in Colin McRae’s RAC Rally-winning Subaru Impreza, was generously donated by the car’s owner, Martyn Spurrell.

Cannonball supercars descend on Killarney

The Cannonball supercar event completed the first leg of its journey in Killarney last Friday, as hundreds of high-performance vehicles arrived at the Brehon Hotel.

The event, which raises funds for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, drew a large crowd of spectators. The convoy, which included marques such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren, arrived in Kil-

larney from Cork after leaving Johnstown Estate in County Meath earlier in the day.

Spectators gathered at the Brehon and Gleneagle Hotel car parks to get a close look at the impressive cars.

The annual event, described as Europe's largest organized road trip, has raised over €2 million for Irish charities to date.

The Killarney stop was the first overnight stay for the participants, with the cars continuing their journey on Saturday.

RSA confirms delivery of reduced waiting times for driving tests

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) have confirmed that it has delivered on the commitments set out in its Driving Test Action Plan, reducing waiting times to a 10-week average and increasing capacity across the national driver testing service.

From June to August 2025, the RSA conducted more than 74,000 driving tests, a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2024. In that period alone, over 15,000 overtime tests were delivered.

Applications remain at record levels, with 192,373 driving test applications received between January and August 2025. July and August saw an unexpect-

ed surge in applications, far exceeding typical seasonal patterns.

The RSA are well advanced with plans to open new centres in Sandyford and Drogheda and a third new centre are in planning stage for Munster.

Brendan Walsh, Chief Operating Officer with the RSA, said: “This achievement is the result of an extraordinary team effort. Our driver testers, administrative

and training staff, and the many new recruits who joined us have worked tirelessly under intense scrutiny and pressure. Their commitment and professionalism deserve recognition.

“We also want to thank drivers, instructors, and stakeholders for their patience and support as we worked through a period of unprecedented demand. While today marks an important achievement, we know that maintaining these gains will require continued vigilance, flexibility, and collaboration.”

The estimated wait time for the Killarney testing centre is 8 weeks, while Tralee is 7 weeks at time of writing. John

Thinking every day of our dear brother Cornelius Guerin beloved son of the late Cathy and Cornelius Guerin Irish Cottage, Muckross Road, Killarney who very sadly, and too young, left us on 22nd September 2014.

Benedictus by John O’Donoghue (1956-2008) For Cornelius

On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets into you may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green and azure blue, come to awaken in you a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you May there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours. And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak to mind your life.

From your sisters and brothers Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, and their families.

• Cup heroes Kerry draw Shamrock Rovers in semi-final

• Manager Healy backs players to achieve Aviva dream

DREAM BIG

Kerry FC’s history-makers have been rewarded with a blockbuster draw against League of Ireland kingpins Shamrock Rovers in the semi-final of the FAI Cup.

The tie will take place in Rovers’ home ground, Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, on Sunday, October 5 at 6pm.

Colin Healy’s Kingdom upset the odds in more ways in than one when they fought back from three goals down to beat Sligo Rovers 4-3 after extra time in the quarter-final last Friday night. Killarney man Daniel Okwute popped up with the dramatic winner in the 117th minute to send Mounthawk Park into a frenzy.

It was a remarkable end to what was undoubtedly the greatest night in the club’s existence, and fans are now dreaming of the final at a packed Aviva Stadium.

When speaking to LOI TV in the aftermath of the quarter-final, Healy was asked if there is a feeling amongst the players that the impossible can happen.

“Why can’t it?” the Cork man replied. “Absolutely. Why can’t it? The players showed there tonight [what happens when they] back themselves. So,

100%. We look forward to it.”

Standing in their way are Shamrock Rovers, winners of six of the last seven Premier Division titles, and unbackable favourites to add another league trophy to their collection this season. The Hoops beat Drogheda United 5-4 on penalties in their FAI Cup quarter-final after conceding a late equaliser at the end of normal time. The other semi-final will see Cork City host St Pat’s on Friday, October 3.

Kerry will be hoping Rovers are suffering from a European hangover when the two sides meet for their novel last four clash. The Dubliners are away to Sparta Prague in the UEFA Conference League group stage on Thursday, October 2, just three days prior.

Healy was asked if the players feel the impossible can happen.
“Why can’t it?” the Cork man replied.

Okwute the hero as Kerry shock Sligo Rovers

Then the aforementioned Brosnan, who had been adventurous since coming on, picked up possession inside the box and curled a superb goal into the far corner. Kerry weren’t dead yet. Mounthawk Park rocked. And I mean ‘rocked’.

A tale of the unexpected and the unbelievable. Dreams merged into reality at Mounthawk Park last Friday night as the raucous home crowd celebrated a win that propelled Kerry FC into the last four of the prestigious FAI Cup.

Three-nil down after 61 minutes, and then that amazing fightback. Heroes all, but none more so than super subs Daniel Okwute and Cian Brosnan. They threw a life-saving ring into the murky waters and brought Kerry ashore to thunderous applause.

It surely ranks with Séamus Darby’s late goal for Offaly in the 1982 All-Ireland final. This time, the shoe was on the other foot for Kerry.

The League of Ireland’s newest team

were very nervous and tentative in the opening period, showing too much respect for Premier Division side Sligo Rovers. Owen Elding struck for two goals in as many minutes around the quarter-hour mark – disastrous for Kerry, or so the partisan supporters in the crowd around me felt.

Kerry manager Colin Healy responded by bringing in Cian Brosnan, and Brossie made a huge difference as he has done so often in the past. Still, it was a 0-2 deficit at the interval. What happened in the dressing room? Healy must have cut to the chase as we saw a different Kerry FC performance in that second half. They went at Sligo to give the natives some hope, but then Elding struck once more in the 61st minute to seemingly kill the tie as the contest.

Back to reality, and Matthew Connor had to make a great save to deny Elding his fourth goal. Kerry, emboldened by Brosnan’s strike, pushed forward and were awarded a 77th-minute penalty, which Joe Adams struck into the top corner. It could have been 4-1 but now it was 3-2, and the relentless Okwute nearly levelled the tie just minutes later, forcing a superb save from Sargeant.

Time was ticking away as Kerry drove forward for an equaliser. In the 90th minute, the eagle landed. A low cross whipped across the penalty area by Okwute found Brosnan, who converted from close range. The eruption inside Mounthawk Park was deafening. Kerry had clawed back from the brink to level the tie at three goals apiece. Extra-time beckoned. The second interval provided an oppor-

tunity for Healy to deliver his message: carpe diem.

Penalties loomed large as neither side could break the deadlock, but the decisive moment came in the 116th minute. Adams, Seán McGrath, and Okwute created chaos in the Sligo penalty area. Fittingly, it fell to Okwute, who was involved in the previous three goals, and he adjusted to lash a half-volley into the net.

Pandemonium ensued.

Could they hold out in those dying minutes? Yes, they could. Not the Fairytale of New York, but the Fairytale of Mounthawk.

Okwute was my Man of the Match. A hero amongst heroes.

Talented Boys in Green deserve our support

Kerry FC will have a huge test on their hands when they travel to Tallaght Stadium to face the biggest superpower in Irish soccer, Shamrock Rovers. This game is massive for the whole county, and personally I don’t believe it is getting as much attention as it should.

In a county known for GAA talent, there is also a talented group of men who fight for the Kingdom on the soccer pitch. Don’t get me wrong, the Kerry footballers are an incredible squad and deserve their plaudits, but the soccer players should get our support too. Here in Ireland we always talk about the big clubs abroad such as Liverpool, Manchester Utd and others, but we must also back our local Boys in Green. I think

Kerry are an incredibly underrated team – even within our own county. Three years ago, none of these guys were very well-known as sportspeople, but now they will be facing an absolute giant of Irish football on national television. In school, while we still talk about the Champions League and the Premier League, the conversation has shifted to our local club. Playing against Shamrock Rovers will hopefully get more people talking.

There is strong Killarney representation in the Kerry squad with young Luke Doolan (Killarney Athletic) recently joining Ryan Kelliher and Daniel Okwute (both Killarney Celtic) in Mounthawk Park.

Rovers will be a tough opponent but if we all get behind them, that could make all the difference.

St Paul’s to mark

On Saturday, September 27 in the Killarney Avenue Hotel, St Paul’s Basketball Club will host a celebration to mark its 40 years of existence.

A four-course meal will be the centrepiece of the night as the club honours and remembers its founders. Presentations will also be made to all those who represented the St Paul’s on the international stage.

It promises to be a great night with memories flooding back in an atmosphere of nostalgia.

The present-day playing group owe a lot

to the founding members. The club has gone from strength to strength through the years, with women's and men's teams both competing on the national stage. There is also a bustling juvenile section for boys and girls with record numbers – a sure sign that the club is thriving.

The weekend will also see the club host its Annual Golf Classic on the Friday before the basketball season really kicks into gear on the first weekend in October.

Local lad Eoin Carroll

named St Paul’s captain

Eoin Carroll has been appointed captain of St Paul's senior men’s team for the upcoming season.

Paul’s will compete in the National League under the banner of Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers and new head coach Luke O’Hea has selected Eoin as the ideal man to lead his side.

Eoin was an integral part of the club’s U20 league success last season, winning the MVP Award for a powerful display in the final win over Templeogue. He has been a lynchpin in the National League effort since coming into the squad in his late teens and will once again be hoping to make his mark in 2025/26.

Mark Sheehan has been named as a vice captain, which highlights the St Paul’s philosophy in recent years of investing in the youth, hoping that will bear fruit at senior level.

Rui Saraiva has always been a very positive influence on the younger cohort in the squad and he has also been named a vice captain.

The team has been busy in recent weeks playing challenge games and integrating new signings Steve Kelly, Sam Grant and Pablo Murcia. All guns are now pointing towards the start of the season. Paul’s will tip-off on Saturday, October 4 with a home game against the Galway Titans.

Powerful Crokes retain Kerry senior club title

The Killarney side proved too strong for Na Gaeil in Tralee as county men Tony Brosnan and Gavin White pointed the way to victory - the club's seventh at this grade since the competition's inception in 1998.

KERRY SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Dr Crokes 0 - 20 | Na Gaeil 1 - 12

AUSTIN STACK PARK

Dr Crokes retained their Senior Club title on Sunday last as Tony Brosnan turned in a Man of the Match performance in a five-point win over Na Gaeil. There were just five points in it at the finish but the winners held a 10-point lead late into the game before Na Gaeil salvaged some comfort with a late goal and a two-pointer.

Kerry stars Brosnan (0-8 from play) and Gavin White (0-6 from play) pointed the way for Crokes' seventh title in the 25 years the tournament has been played since 1998. Next in line are Austin Stacks on four wins.

Back to last Sunday’s game. Crokes made use of the strong wind blowing straight downfield into the Killarney End. Brosnan, Crokes' most consistent and prolific scorer in the past decade was playing in his best position at number 14, and he and Crokes responded quickly and clinically to Diarmuid O’Connor’s first point after 20 seconds. Brosnan and White scored freely to make it 0-10 to 0-4. The Kerry captain was majestic, hitting two two-pointers and one single in that opening period, complementing Brosnan’s impressive personal tally.

Na Gaeil can thank goalkeeper Conor Bohane for preventing Crokes from going further ahead as he saved a goalbound shot from Cian McMahon, and that was just 13 minutes into the game.

At the other end, Shane Murphy did well to push O’Connor’s effort over for a point.

At half-time, Na Gaeil were in with a sporting chance, trailing by seven points, but the experienced Crokes played the correct strategy by taking the game into attack. They never allowed Na Gaeil to make a comeback until that late flurry.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Crokes captain David Shaw, who did not start

and only made a cameo entrance in the 60th minute due to a hamstring tear, dedicated the win to Jamie Doolan, their former star player and mentor who passed away in July.

The Michael O’Connor Cup is a special win for Dr Crokes as it is dedicated to the memory of the late great player and administrator Michael Coiny O’Connor, Ross Road.

Congratulations to the Kerry County Board on the excellent presentation of the games. Despite the downpours of last week and all the games in Austin Stack Park, the pitch was in excellent condition.

Pádraig Mac Gearailt sang the Amhrán na bhFiann unaccompanied, word-perfect, and understanding the sentiments of our national anthem. It was heartening to see both teams show the respect it deserves by standing to attention for the full duration, a welcome change from Donegal’s shenanigans in the formal prelude to the 2025 All-Ireland final. After the Intermediate Club final, winning captain Franz Sauerland delivered a wonderful acceptance speech as Gaeilge, his native language. He spoke from the heart like clubmates Páidí ÓSé and Dara Cinnéide did in Croke Park, without a trace of a note.

A special word of credit to Emma Sweeney, who brought together the efforts of many to produce a splendid match programme for the three finals for a very modest €3. This was no runof-the-mill stereotyped production but was filled with interesting details. Great to see such innovative sections as Club Corner, featuring opinions of young and not-so-young club members from all six teams.

Best of luck to Ballymacelligott (Junior) and An Ghaeltacht (Intermediate), representing Kerry in Munster and hopefully in Croker. Crokes await the outcome of the Kerry SFC to determine who will represent Kerry.

East Kerry hit with Clifford injury blow

County star a likely absentee as Kerry SFC gets underway

East Kerry’s bid to reclaim the Kerry Senior Football Championship has potentially been dealt a significant blow after Paudie Clifford was forced off in the Kerry Intermediate Club final due to injury.

The Fossa playmaker lasted just 50 minutes of his side’s defeat to An Ghaeltacht after seemingly playing with discomfort throughout.

After missing the Roscommon game in the All-Ireland group phase in May due to a hamstring issue, Clifford returned for the trip to Cork but limped off before half-time. He subsequently missed the Meath match in Tullamore before returning as a substitute against Cavan in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final and Armagh in the quarter-final proper.

“It was the bottom of my left hammer,” Clifford later told The Square Ball podcast. “It’s called the fascia. There was scar tissue left and it was still sore. It was picking at me. There was one point I couldn’t sprint or sidestep.”

He was operating at around 80% versus Armagh, he revealed, while admitting that there may have been a chance of reinjuring himself once he returned to action.

“From then on it was just managing it, really.” He travelled “eight or nine times” to a clinic in Tipperary to avail of cryotherapy and an oxygen chamber to help rehabilitate for the business end of the

Fossa fall short in intermediate final

Fossa’s goal is to rise from Junior status to win the Intermediate and swim with the big fish in Kerry.

Could they do it this year? Too much, too soon. They have now lost two of these finals in the past three years and Sunday’s defeat to An Ghaeltacht (0-19 to 1-11) was a reality check for Fossa. They rode their luck at the death in Beaufort and were fortunate not to be pulled back for a draw when the woodwork denied Kilcummin and former Kerry FC player Matt Keane an equalising goal right on full-time in the semi-final. There was no fairytale ending in this final as a much stronger side from An Ghaeltacht were well in control to win the Tom Keane Perpetual Cup as comfortably as the scoreline suggests.

The powerful Aidan Walsh, a former Cork star in hurling and football, gave them the edge at midfield. Living in the Gaeltacht for several years, he only transferred from his home club of Kanturk this season.

The winners played with the strong downfield wind in the first half, using it so well with Kerry star Brian Ó Beaglaoich delivering 0-9 including four two-pointers. The men from West Kerry led by 0-14 to 1-4 at half-time. It was clear from the early stages that Paudie Clifford was injured, and you can’t fly a turbojet on one wing. Brother David scored two two-pointers in his seven-point total.

Captain Emmett O’Shea (1-3) and Matt Rennie (0-1) chipped in as well but their challenge was killed off by An Ghaeltacht and Ó Beaglaoich’s Man of the Match display.

season.

He started both the semi-final versus Tyrone and the final against Donegal, turning in in superb performances in both matches as Kerry claimed their 39th All-Ireland title. “It was never perfect but it wasn’t affecting me from the semi on,” Clifford said. “Especially in the final, it didn’t affect me.”

That the three-time All-Star was unable to see out the 60 minutes in the Intermediate final is no doubt of serious concern to his divisional team, East Kerry, ahead of the Kerry SFC, which gets underway this weekend.

East Kerry, who have won four of the last six titles, play St Kieran’s on Sunday in a district-boards-only preliminary round with the winners advancing to Round 1. The match takes place in Austin Stack Park at 4pm. The losers will have a second chance to qualify for Round 1 via a backdoor fixture against another loser (or North Kerry, who have been given a bye).

Elsewhere in the first preliminary round, South Kerry take on West Kerry on Saturday at 4pm in Killorglin, and St Brendan’s Board go up against Mid Kerry on Sunday at 2pm in Austin Stack Park (forming a double header with East Kerry v St Kieran’s).

The nine club teams (Dr Crokes, Dingle, Austin Stacks, Kenmare Shamrocks, Rathmore, Na Gaeil, Spa, Templenoe and Milltown/Castlemaine) will join the competition in Round 1.

Killarney Athletic

U14 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1 Killarney Celtic C 2. Goal: Sean O’Connor. POTM: Leon Hebda. Athletic hosted Celtic in Woodlawn on Saturday morning in wet conditions. Athletic’s early pressure paid off through a well-taken goal by Sean O’Connor after10 minutes. Celtic pulled one back 10 minutes later and before half-time were awarded a penalty for a handball. Penalty scored, 2-1 at the end of the half. Athletic controlled most of the second half but Celtic, to their credit, held on to the lead. Athletic deserved something from the game but overall a strong performance from both sides and a competitive match.

PREMIER DIV: Listowel Celtic 0-0 Killarney Celtic. The A squad opened their defence of the league title with a draw away to Listowel last Sunday. In very windy conditions Killarney had the lion's share of possession but were unable to make the breakthrough, so the honours were shared.

U16 DIV 2: Killarney Celtic B 6-0 Tralee Dynamos. Celtic B had an impressive win last week at home. After a tight opening period Celtic improved and struck the front. Celtic were able to take their chances and run out comfortable winners.

U14 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic B 1-1 Camp. Eoin Murphy. Celtic B put on a battling performance and came away with a draw against Camp A. Killarney Athletic B 1-2 Killarney Celtic C. Dylan McCarthy. Celtic C gained an away win in Woodlawn last week. Athletic hit the front before Dylan McCarthy equalised from the spot. Celtic were ahead before half time when good build up play left Dylan McCarthy in place to score. Athletic came more into the game in the 2nd half but Celtic held firm to take the points.

U12: Listowel Celtic 1-2 Killarney Celtic. Cian O’Connell, Eryk McGrath. Killarney A came away with the spoils from a very windy Listowel last week. Despite playing against the wind Killarney hit the front through Cian O’Connell. Listowel drew level in the 2nd half, but it was Killarney who found the winner. Adam O'Sullivan and Fionn Murphy paved the way for Eryk McGrath to finish to the net and take the points. Killorglin B 1-2 Killarney Celtic B. Cian Mulvihill, John Tkachenko. A good 2nd half performance saw Celtic B take the points. 0-0 at half time Celtic hit the front through Cian Mulvihill. John Tkachenko doubled the lead before Killorglin pulled 1 back. MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: There was no joy for our minors last Thursday night in the Keane’s SuperValu Minor County Championship semi-final played in Austin Stack Park in Tralee. Captain Brían O’Shea won the toss and elected to play with the strong wind, but a slow start saw St Kieran’s take an early 1-1 advantage. Settling down the lads took a grip on the game and on balance should have gone into the break ahead, but the opposition keeper pulled off a great stop to deny Jack Culloty a certain goal. Some wides too that would have been big scores given the wind advantage would be another factor. In the second period St Kieran’s pulled away building up a sixpoint lead but credit to the lads narrowed the gap to a score again following a great goal from Brían O’Shea. Despite dogged performances at the back from the likes of Bryan OConnor and Ronan O’Brien as the game entered the closing stages the subs from the Castleisland District started to gain the upper hand and scored eight points in the closing stages to run out winners. But the scoreline was not a true reflection of the contest, a lot closer than the score suggests. Thanks to St Kieran’s and the officials for a sporting game. Thanks also to our supporters from across the club. All in all a great summer for the lads with the Division 1 Shield win and competing magnificently in the County Championship. Next up will be an East Kerry Championship to finish the year off.

SENIOR LADIES RECAP: Our Senior Ladies season came to a close last week

when they exited the Junior A championship away to ISG in Kenmare when we came up just short on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-12 to eventually lose out on qualification by scoring difference. This year saw our ladies step up divisions in all competitions due to last year’s successful campaigns. The Donal Curtin Division 2 league was a daunting prospect, but they stepped up well to win 5 of the 7 group games and narrowly lost out to the eventual winner Castleisland Desmond’s in the semi-final by three points. Next up was the Senior Club League where wins over Castlegregory/Annascaul and ISG qualified the team for the second consecutive final in the competition. Kerins O’Rahillys were the opposition where a magnificent second half display helped to win the title for the second year in a row on a scoreline of 3-18 to 1-11. The Junior A championship saw a win against Fossa in the opening round before a heavy loss away to Cromane. Unfortunately they came up just short on Sunday away to ISG to exit the competition. All in all, a disappointing end to the season but a season that brought further progress and saw them compete well in all competitions while securing further silverware in the senior club league. Ladies chairperson Ted Healy would like to thank the panel of players and his fellow management of John McCarthy and Orla Culloty for their commitment and dedication again this season. They have won 5 competitions in the past 15 months, a record they, and indeed the club, can be proud of. We look forward to supporting our ladies again next year.

U15 LADIES: The Legion U15s ladies made a strong return to action, opening their U15 club championship campaign with a dominant win away over Cromane. From the throw-in, Legion set the tone with intensity and determination across every line of the pitch. The backs were fearless, holding Cromane scoreless for the first quarter, while the midfield controlled the game with relentless work and sharp distribution, which laid the foundation for a number of attacking plays. The link-up play was sharp, ensuring the forwards were well supported and constantly on the front foot. Despite some wides, the forwards made a big impact on the scoreboard. Throughout the game, our subs added energy and kept the momentum going, rounding off a strong team performance and a great start to the championship. Thank you to the ref on the night and to Cromane for a very sporting contest. Final score Killarney Legion 3-22 Cromane 2-4.

Dr Crokes GAA

SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Dr. Crokes 0:20 Na Gaeil 1:12. We regained the Senior Club title after a hardfought 5-point victory over Na Gaeil on Sunday. We settle quickly after Na Gaeil's early score with Tom Doyle and Tony Brosnan proving accurate in front of the

posts. Tony finished on 8 points from play, while Gavin White contributed 5 points, which included two 2-pointers in the first half. Down at the other end, Shane Murphy pulled off a fantastic save to deny a Na Gaeil goal just before half time. We led 0:12 to 0:05 at the break. Tony Brosnan wasted no time in extending our lead, pointing within 25 seconds of the play. Strong performances from Mark O'Shea, Brian Looney, Gavin White and Billy Courtney drove us to a ten-point lead in the 50th minute. Na Gaeil continued to claw back and fired home a goal and a 2-pointer in quick succession to narrow the gap to just 4 with 4 minutes remaining. Alex Hennigan's late point helped to secure the silverware. Our focus now turns to the County Championship.

LOTTO took place September 15th. Numbers drawn were 5, 6, 10, 23. Jackpot of €11,900 was NOT WON. 13 patrons matched 3 numbers and receive €35 each. INTERMEDIATE

CHAMPIONSHIP

FINAL: Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be against a very strong, balanced An Ghaeltacht side on Sunday in Austin Stacks Park. Fossa played against a very strong wind in the first half, and it was a slow burn for the first 15 minutes, An Ghaeltacht had the first two scores of the game before frees from Emmett O’Shea and David Clifford had the sides level after 13 minutes of play. An Ghaeltacht were in control around the middle of the field, picking up a lot of breaks and this allowed Brian O’Beaglaoich to attack at will and he landed three super two pointers to leave them eight points clear after 25 minutes. Fossa then got a free which was superbly despatched to the net by Emmett O’Shea to give his team a huge lift, however An

Ghaeltacht replied with another three points to leave the half time score 1-04 to 0-14. Fossa had the aid of the wind in the second half and needed a good start; Emmett O’Shea kicked a free and David Clifford landed a two pointer in the 11th minute to cut the deficit to four points. However, Fossa were struggling to get good primary possession and An Ghaeltacht extended their lead out to seven again by the 22nd minute. Kieran O’Sullivan tried his best to drive his team forward and again, an Emmett O’Shea free and a David Clifford two pointer reduced the lead to four with time running out, a technical infraction gave An Ghaeltacht a tap over free and from then on there was only going to be one winner as they ran down the clock. It finished An Ghaeltacht 0-19, Fossa 1-11, it was a roller coaster of a campaign where we got out the right side of some very tight games but on this occasion, we met a well-balanced side who used the elements to their advantage.

Team: Shane O’Sullivan, Dan O’Connell, Brian Myers, Sam Buckley, Kieran O’Sullivan, Eoin Talbot, Paddy Sheehan, Cian O’Shea, Matt Rennie 0-1, Fintan Coffey, Paudie Clifford, Ted O’Gorman, David Clifford 0-7, Emmett O’Shea 1-3, Killian Buckley, Harry Buckley, Darren Cronin, Michael O’Dwyer, Rian Colleran. U15 CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa v Moyvane. A fantastic game in the U15 Championship was played by this great team of girls against Moyvane in Gortroe on Tuesday evening. The girls truly kept the spectators on the edge till the final whistle while we went score for score with Moyvane, clock ticking down, teams tied at Fossa 6-13 to Moyvane 7-10 the deadlock was broke when a last minute goal was scored by Fossa to take the win in a hugely entertaining game of football.
