Killarney man Sean Clifford, better known locally as ‘Seanie Runner’, is currently attempting one of the toughest endurance challenges ever seen in Ireland by running the full 2,700km length of the Wild Atlantic Way.
He set off from Muff in Donegal on August 7 and plans to reach Kinsale, Cork, early next week.
The route takes in the full Atlantic coastline of Ireland and will require him to cover an average of 90 to 100 kilometres every day. If successful, he will complete the distance in just 27 days.
Clifford is not chasing records for the sake of it. His run is aimed at raising awareness for mental health and the benefits of outdoor activity. He said before starting the challenge that his goal is to highlight the importance of exercise, fresh air, and community support when it comes to dealing with mental health struggles. Throughout the month, he will share updates on his progress across social media, including Facebook pages where he is referred to as the ‘Crazy Kerry Man’ as well as through a documentary being filmed by Niall Foley. A live tracker also shows exactly where he is along the route. [https://live.primaltracking.com/ waw2025/]
On the first day of the run, Clifford cov-
ered 103km from Muff to Malin. Strong winds and heavy weather made conditions difficult, but he completed the opening stage and reached Malin village by nightfall.
The route took him past Inishowen Head
and Banba’s Crown at Malin Head, Donegal’s most northerly point, before finishing at his first planned stop. Clifford admitted he would have run further only for his crew stepping in to manage his schedule.
By this Friday, Clifford is expected to have completed the full Ring of Kerry section of the Wild Atlantic Way and be running in the direction of the Beara Peninsula, pushing through more than half of the entire route.
The challenge is being carried out on a solo basis, but Clifford has been receiving strong support from family, friends, and local communities who have turned out to cheer him along the way.
A film crew is following his journey to capture the highs and lows of the challenge. The documentary is set to show not just the physical effort involved but also the wider message of the importance of resilience, community spirit, and looking after mental health.
Clifford is already well-known in Kerry running circles, but this challenge is bringing his story to a national audience. His determination to complete the route and his willingness to use it to promote mental health awareness has been welcomed by many groups.
If he succeeds, Clifford will have covered more than 2,700 kilometres of coastline in under a month, the equivalent of running over 64 marathons back-to-back
A Killarney family has launched a fundraising campaign to support vital cancer treatment abroad for Warren Tierney, who is battling stage-four oesophagus cancer.
Warren’s partner, Evelyn Dore, has organised a GoFundMe appeal to help cover the cost of specialised treatment in Germany, which is estimated at around €40,000 per session.
On the fundraising page, Evelyn explained the family’s situation:
“Our fight against cancer. When I was pregnant with both Trinity and Wesley, I was very sick. Through it all, Warren carried us. For the past three years, he has devoted himself entirely to looking after me and our two little ones — pouring every ounce of his strength into our family and never once thinking of himself. In giving so much, Warren forgot to look after his own health. When he began to
feel unwell, doctors sent him home with reflux tablets. But deep down, we knew something wasn’t right. We had to fight our way through A&E, begging them to take it seriously. Then came the devastating news: stage 4 adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus.”
This week, the family confirmed they were able to secure a 10% discount on Warren’s first treatment. They travelled to Munich, where he will undergo localised chemotherapy at Medias Klinikum Burghausen. The cost of the first session was €38,557. Evelyn said they are grateful for the support received so far but added that more treatments will be needed.

Killarney Garda Station has received a boost in numbers this week with the appointment of two new probationer Gardaí to the town.
They are among 154 recruits who graduated from the Garda College in Templemore on Friday. In total, five of the new members will be deployed to Kerry – two to Killarney and three to Tralee. Minister for Forestry and Rural Affairs
Michael Healy-Rae TD welcomed the announcement.
“I want to first pay tribute to these men and women, and to their families, on this very proud day as they graduate from the Garda College. Choosing to serve in An Garda Síochána is a great honour and deserves the highest respect. I also want to warmly welcome the new recruits to County Kerry, where their work will be valued and appreciated by the entire community they are coming to serve,” he said.
Deputy Danny Healy-Rae also welcomed the move and said the additional Garda numbers would be a real support to local policing.
Kerry TD Michael Cahill echoed these views.
“The deployment of additional Gardaí is welcome. We are fortunate that every community wants to see more Gardaí visible in their area. It is one of the most effective measures we have for preventing crime and making people feel safer,” he said.
This latest group represents the largest allocation of new Gardaí to rural areas outside of Dublin in the past year, a development described by local representatives as a clear sign of commitment to strengthening rural communities.
Great Southern Killarney recently welcomed Nigel West of the Brontë Birthplace. Nigel is a descendant of Arthur Bell Nicholls, husband of Charlotte Brontë.
The Brontë Birthplace, the house where the author Charlotte Brontë was born, is now an educational and cultural centre for the local community in Yorkshire. The visit was attended by local artist Dolores Lyne, Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady, and Great Southern General Manager Jamie Power, in an event that highlighted the strong cultural connections between the Brontë family and Killarney.
Patrick Brontë, father of Charlotte, Emily and Anne, was born in 1777 in Emdale, County Down, and grew up in the parish of Drumballyroney near Rathfriland before going on to study at St John’s College, Cambridge. His Irish upbringing
shaped his outlook, and in 1818, while living in Thornton, Yorkshire, he published The Maid of Killarney, a poem that reflected the romantic interest in Ireland of the period.
The family’s link to Killarney deepened in 1854 when Charlotte Brontë and Arthur Bell Nicholls stayed at the Great Southern, just days after the hotel had opened. Their visit remains one of the earliest associations between the Brontë literary legacy and the landmark Killarney hotel. The presence of Nigel West in Killarney served as a reminder of those ties, as well as the wider Irish roots of the Brontë family. Great Southern General Manager Jamie Power said the hotel was proud to continue celebrating its historic connections while honouring traditions that still resonate with the local community today.

Killarney weight loss coach Pat Sheehan is preparing to take on the 101km Kerry Way Ultra Nite Marathon once again to raise funds for Comfort for Chemo Kerry.
Pat first completed the event last September, running through the night across Kerry’s toughest terrain and finishing in 20 hours and 20 minutes. This year, he is aiming to match or beat that time while raising more funds for the cancer charity.
The ultra-marathon begins in Dromid on Friday, September 5 at 9pm and takes runners on a demanding route through Waterville, Caherdaniel, Sneem, Templenoe, Kenmare and back to Killarney via the old Kenmare Road, finishing at Killarney Racecourse.
Pat said he is once again motivated by the cause: “Comfort for Chemo Kerry is an incredible cause, and will make a real difference to cancer patients and
their families across the county. Every donation, big or small, will make a difference.”
He also paid tribute to his support team of Dave Ladden and Donnie O’Sullivan, who helped him complete the challenge last year.
Mary Horgan, secretary of Comfort for Chemo Kerry, praised his efforts:
“Pat’s dedication to this event and to our charity is truly inspiring. His efforts not only raise much-needed funds but also spread awareness of our mission to build a chemotherapy unit for the people of Kerry.”

A special screening of Sins of Ireland, a film that featured the late Fr Kevin McNamara, will take place in Moyvane on Friday, September 5.
The event will be held in the Marian Hall with proceeds going to Moyvane Development Association.
The documentary, directed by Alex Fegan, was first shown on RTÉ in 2020 under the title The Confessors. It looks at the tradition of confession in Ireland through the voices of priests themselves, including Fr McNamara, who was parish priest in Moyvane at the time. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the director.
Fr McNamara, a Clare native, was a wellknown figure across Kerry. He served in Kenmare, Rathmore and Killarney before being appointed to Glenflesk Parish in July 2021. Prior to that he had spent six years in Moyvane. In Glenflesk, he quickly became active in community projects, organising events such as a fundraising concert in the Gleneagle Hotel to support the refurbishment of Barraduff Church.
He was remembered as a larger-thanlife character who left a lasting mark on every parish he served. His time in
Killarney made him especially popular in the area, where he was regarded as approachable and engaging with parishioners. Following his death later in 2021, tributes described him as enthusiastic, energetic and always ready to bring a smile.
Tickets for the Moyvane screening are €12 for adults and €10 for students. They are available online at Eventmaster: https://eventmaster.ie/event/kGkAcK2TA2
The evening is supported by Kennelly’s Homevalue, Enright’s Bar and Fast Fix Doors.

Pig’s Lane in Killarney has been named among Ireland’s best bars after winning two major awards at the 2025 Bar of the Year Awards in Dublin.
The underground speakeasy, part of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection, took home gold in the Best Designed Bar / Best Inside Space category and bronze in the Cocktail Bar of the Year category. The awards ceremony, held last week, at the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road, recognised Pig’s Lane as one of Ireland’s top three cocktail bars, finishing behind Cork’s Cask Bar and Dublin’s BAR 1661. Judges praised Pig’s Lane for its “mixol-

The bar is known for its inventive cocktails, curated wine list, locally sourced snacks and small plates, and live music. Its design, inspired by old underground railways, features reclaimed décor and pays tribute to the area’s history, once known locally as Pig’s Lane in the early 1800s.

A Tralee woman has designed the world’s first fully accessible, multisensory pregnancy test.
Leah Shanahan has newly graduated from Product Design and Technology at the University of Limerick.
Leah’s design is the first saliva-based, reusable, accessible pregnancy test to deliver results through touch, sight and sound. She was inspired by her personal experience as a visually impaired woman and was driven by the blind women she met throughout the design process.
‘AMY’, which is the name of the product, addresses a practical healthcare challenge through user-centred design with inclusivity at the heart of the product. The reader uses photosensor technology, similar to that found in digital pregnancy tests. A raised plus or minus symbol on the reader can be felt by touch. It also includes a feature that allows users to tap their phone to open a webpage where they will view a bold red or green symbol along with large, high-contrast text for those who are partially sighted, and users can also choose to hear the result aloud.
AMY was born after Leah found out that that blind and visually impaired women were the only group excluded from the intimate moment of discovering their own pregnancy. Ms Shanahan said she wanted to create a product that restored independence and dignity in the experience.

It costs an average of €150,000 to put a new, fully stocked Critical Care response vehicle on the road, while it costs up to €15,000 to set up a new CFR group. Life support bags which contain a defibrillator, a resuscitation kit and a medical diagnostic kit cost €1,500 each.

An international team of astronomers, co-led by researchers at University of Galway, has made the unexpected discovery of a new planet.
Detected at an early stage of formation around a young analog of our own Sun, the planet is estimated to be about 5 million years-old and most likely a gas giant of similar size to Jupiter.
The study, which was led by Leiden University, University of Galway and University of Arizona, has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The ground-breaking discovery was made using one of the world’s most ad-
vanced observatories - the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO’s VLT) in the Atacama Desert in Chile.
The new planet has been named WISPIT 2b.
It is only the second time a confirmed planet has been detected at this early evolutionary stage around a young version of our Sun.
WISPIT 2b was detected as part of a fiveyear observational research project during which the international team sought to establish whether wide orbit gas giant planets are more common around younger or older stars. This led to the unexpected discovery of the new planet.
A radio documentary highlighting the remarkable work of Sr Mary Lucey, a Millstreet nun who spent 31 years in Zambia, will be broadcast on Radio Kerry this weekend.
Sr Mary Lucey, who is originally from Rathcoole in Millstreet, was awarded the President’s Insignia of Mercy in May in recognition of her work in Zambia. Sr Mary returned to Ireland in 2023 after dedicating three decades to humanitarian efforts in Zambia.
She helped build three villages, feed the hungry, and build schools while living over there.
Sr Mary arrived in Zambia in 1992 when the country was experiencing a famine. She faced many challenges at the beginning. This included making sorghum grain imported from Canada palatable. She planted fruit trees that were more drought tolerant. In time a tractor was bought with €20,000 raised by family and friends.
Her legacy includes the development of three villages over the span of 20 years.
The first village was funded by Agricultural Credit Corporation. The second village was financed by women whom Sr Mary met in the United States. The third was paid for by the parish of Harrogate in Yorkshire where Mary's brother Donal was Parish priest.
To qualify for a house, families were required to mould and fire 3,500 bricks by hand, help with construction, dig a communal well, and commit to sending their children to school. All houses are powered by solar powered electricity funded by friends and visitors. Drawing inspiration from Rathcoole’s co-operatively owned milk collection service, the three villages are now run by a co-operative owned and operated by the residents themselves.
The Radio Kerry programme, which airs on Saturday at 9am, features Frank Lewis in conversation with Sr Mary Lucey on her family’s 40-acre farm, which inspired her work in Zambia. Frank and Sr Mary will also be joined by the Irish Ambassador to Zambia.
There was a 45% increase in wasp activity for the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
That’s according to Rentokil, Ireland’s leading pest control provider. The company is warning the public to be cautious as the country moves into late summer, the peak season for wasp activity, when these stinging insects increasingly target human food. Wasps are most active during the warm summer months, with the Common and German Wasp responsible for most nuisance stings in Ireland.
In early summer, wasps mainly prey on other insects and feed on sugary secretions from their larvae.
As summer progresses and larvae mature, wasps turn to alternative sources of carbohydrates, often found around humans.
This change in feeding behaviour means late summer gatherings, such as barbeques, picnics, and outdoor dining, are prime targets for foraging wasps.
Rentokil has warned that climate change and warmer temperatures are likely to increase wasp activity in future years, extending the pest season and making infestations more common.

Irish rally legend Billy Coleman is confirmed for Rally Masters Ireland, the new demonstration-style event at Killarney Racecourse on Saturday, 27 September.
The Millstreet Maestro will drive a BMW M3 E30 supplied by Aidan Long. The car is a faithful replica of the one Coleman rallied in 1987, his last season as a professional driver. Finished in full period Rothmans colours, it is almost identical to the car that brought him to the end of his top-level career.
Adding to the occasion, the original Coleman BMW M3 – registration GXI 9487 – will also be in Killarney. Now owned by Denis Cronin, the car will appear on demonstration runs and be on display, giving fans the chance to see one of the most famous Irish rally cars of all time back alongside its most famous driver. Coleman’s confirmation is another major boost for Rally Masters Ireland, which will see 50 cars and 50 drivers gather for a one-day showcase of iconic rally machinery. The 1.7km course at Killarney Racecourse will host everything from Group B monsters like the MG Metro 6R4, to Group A icons like the Subaru Impreza, right through to the early World Rally Cars.
He will be joined in Killarney by Patrick Snijers, the seven-time Belgian champi-
on and 1994 European champion, who will drive a Bastos-liveried BMW M3 E30, and by World Rally Championship driver Josh McErlean, who will appear in a Ford Focus WRC.
The event is organised by Killarney and District Motor Club and co-promoted by Motorsport Ireland, with support from Kingfisher Insurance. It is being run in aid of two Irish children’s charities, The Jack and Jill Foundation and Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice.
Tickets are already selling fast, with more than two-thirds now gone. Organisers expect a sell-out well in advance of rally day.

The event started at Barnastooka, Kilgarvan, on the farm of John and Glynn Egan, known as the Good Shepherd. The route followed a horseshoe through the mountains around the Grousemount Wind Farm. The first half of the race passed over the top of Barrnastooka and the four tops of Carrán. Runners then reached Bealic above Gougan Barra before following the county bounds back to the finish at the ‘Top of Coom,’ Ireland’s highest pub.

The first-year class of 2025 began their journey at St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School this week.
Students were welcomed by teachers and staff and took part in an orientation programme to help them settle into school life. Activities included tours of the school, introductions to school rules and routines, and opportunities to meet classmates. The day gave students a chance to familiarise themselves with classrooms, facilities, and extra-curricular options. Staff emphasised the importance of supporting students as they start their secondary education, marking the beginning of their academic and personal development at St Brigid's.
A father and daughter from Killarney have been honoured in a very special way at a ceremony to celebrate 25 years of education provision for children in the impoverished slum village of EmbulBul in Kenya.
Eddie and Triona Sheehy, from Fossa, have spearheaded the Kenya Education Project for 23 of those 25 years and their enormous contribution was formally recognised during a four-hour celebratory Mass to mark the anniversary.
Eddie and Triona were presented with special Maasai blankets during the ceremony which featured music, song, dance and mime and their efforts in the provision of educational opportunities for local children was gratefully acknowledged.
The school in EmbulBul, which is run by the parish and provides a hot meal for all pupils every day, caters for primary and secondary pupils and the facility also incorporates vocational training units to give young people tuition in disciplines like woodwork, hairdressing and dressmaking,
The primary school currently caters for 400 students with a further 200 attending secondary school tuition. It was established by the SMA order and the Christian Brothers of Australia then assumed responsibility for managing the project.
Eddie and Triona’s Kenya Education Project currently sponsors close on 100 students to attend the school and it has helped with the provision of pre-school,
primary and secondary education.
In addition, the charity supports a dairy farm on the grounds of the school which currently boasts 20 milking cows and that enables them to sell milk, yoghurt and ice-cream to the public.
The father and daughter team from Killarney – who are both qualified teachers – also organise an annual sports day with the Sheehy Cup up for grabs for the young people that get involved in sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, netball and table tennis.
Despite the remarkable progress made over the past quarter of a century, Eddie said the level of poverty in EmbulBul –25km south of Nairobi – is still devastating and, when they visit local people in their homes, they often encounter dwellings with no running water and a worrying lack of food.
“Their prospects improve when they attend the school and the longer the young people stay in education the better chance they have. Education is helping more and more families in the village,” Eddie said.
The Kenya Education Project has accounts in PTSB in Killarney and Killarney Credit Union and any donations would be very welcome.

Jack O’Connor has been reappointed as manager of the Kerry senior football team, the County Board confirmed this week.
In a brief statement released after Tuesday’s County Committee Meeting, Kerry GAA said the proposal to keep O’Connor on for two additional years had been ratified by County Board delegates.
The All-Ireland winning backroom team of Cian O’Neill, Aodán Mac Gearailt and James Costello will also be staying on, with Pa McCarthy of Currow earning a promotion from assistant coach to selector.
The news of O’Connor’s extension came as little surprise. His approval rating in the county appears to be at an all-time high following Kerry’s superb victory over Donegal in the All-Ireland final in July. O’Connor initially suggested that he would be walking away from the role but the manner of the team’s impressive performances en route to title number 39 meant there was virtually no real appetite – or cause – for change.
Next year will be the fifth of his current tenure and twelfth in total having previ-
ously taken the reins for three seasons between 2004 and 2006 and for four more between 2009 and 2012. He brought Sam home in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2022 and, of course, 2025. At this stage of his career, there is little the 64-year-old retired schoolteacher has yet to achieve but winning backto-back All-Irelands would be a new milestone. Kerry did win the All-Ireland in 2007 twelve months after he guided them to victory over Mayo, but Pat O’Shea had taken over as team manager following O’Connor’s decision to
step aside at the end of ’06. Kerry were defeated by Tyrone in the final in 2005, Down in the quarter-final in 2010 and Dublin in the final in 2023. No other team besides Kerry in 2006/2007 and Dublin during their six-in-a-row has retained Sam Maguire since Cork managed the feat in 1989/1990, but Kerry are, nevertheless, the early favourites with the bookies to go all the way in 2026. The Kingdom are short odds at just 6/4 with Donegal and Tyrone joint second favourites on 7/1. Armagh and Dublin are both 12/1.

The local club action is heating up this weekend as we reach the quarter-final stage of the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Premier Club Championships. It’s now or never for all the clubs who are taking to the field this weekend, particularly for the non-senior sides who know that their seasons are very much on the line. At senior level, Dr Crokes and Kenmare Shamrocks have the weekend off after topping their respective groups and advancing directly to the semi-finals. Crokes had already secured top spot in Group 3 prior to last weekend’s matches but Kenmare left it extremely late to clinch first place in Group 2. The veteran Stephen O’Brien popped up with a last-ditch two-pointer to snatch a draw against Milltown/Castlemaine, a remarkable result considering that they trailed by five heading into injury time (their opponents missed a penalty in time added on to boot).
Na Gaeil beat Templenoe by eight points to advance from Group 1 as the third best pool winner, a feat which earns them a spot in the quarters (not the semis). Tralee neighbours Austin Stacks qualified as runners-up.
In Group 3, Rathmore overcame the challenge of Spa to win by five points and move on to the quarters. They will now face Stacks in Austin Stack Park on Saturday at 7pm, the match forming a double header with Dingle v Na Gaeil which throws in at 5pm.
The winners of these fixtures will face Crokes or Kenmare in the last four.
The Intermediate Club Championship is shaping up to be as fiercely contested as ever. Kilcummin finished top of Group 1 following a convincing 12-point victory over Fossa. Matt Keane scored seven points from play for the hosts as Paudie Clifford made his return for Fossa.
In Group 2, Legion secured a crucial fivepoint win over Ballydonoghue with Finbarr Murphy and Ryan O’Grady chipping in with 0-3 apiece. The result was enough to clinch first place with Listowel sneaking into second with an 1-23 to 1-15 victory at home to Laune Rangers.
An Ghaeltacht pipped Glenflesk to top spot in Group 3 after the former scored
a valuable three-point win against the latter. A goal by PJ Mac Láimh was significant for the men from West Kerry, who survived despite losing Brian Ó Beaglaoich to a second yellow late on.
In Group 4, Beaufort and Gneeveguilla enjoyed fine wins at home to Kerins O’Rahillys and Glenbeigh-Glencar, results which saw them finish first and second respectively.
All of which means that five of the eight clubs still standing hail from East Kerry, although the draw threw up just one allEast Kerry tie. Legion will host Glenflesk in Dirreen on Saturday, a repeat of the contentious group game from the 2024 championship, which Glenflesk won by a point.
Elsewhere, Kilcummin are at home to Listowel Emmets, Gneeveguilla travel to Gallarus to take on An Ghaeltacht, and Fossa make the short journey to Páirc Uí Chocláin to play Beaufort.
Listry are at home to Ardfert in the last eight of the Intermediate Club Championship with Ballymac playing Ballyduff, Duagh playing St Senan’s and Keel playing Castlegregory.
There are still two outstanding fixtures to be played in Group 1 of the Junior Club Championship before the quarter-finals can be staged.
Senior Quarter-Finals
Saturday 5pm Dingle v Na Gaeil
Saturday 7pm Austin Stacks v Rathmore
Intermediate Quarter-Finals
Saturday 4pm Killarney Legion v Glenflesk Dirreen
Saturday 6pm Kilcummin v Listowel Emmets Kilcummin
Sunday 3pm An Ghaeltacht v Gneeveguilla Gallarus
Sunday 4pm Beaufort v Fossa Beaufort
Junior Premier Quarter-Finals
Saturday 3pm Ballymacelligott v Ballyduff Ballymacelligott
Sunday 2pm Duagh v St Senan’s Duagh
Sunday 2pm Listry v Ardfert Listry
Sunday 2pm Keel v Castlegregory Keel
Junior Group 1 (Round 3)
Sunday 2pm Skellig Rangers v Cordal Portmagee
Sunday 2pm Valentia Young Islanders v Moyvane Valentia

Our talented sports women are to the fore this week. At international level, the Irish women’s rugby squad got their World Cup off to the perfect start with a runaway 42-14 win over Japan in Northampton.
You have heard of Ireland and Lions manager Andy Farrell but, for many, Scott Bemand is a new name. He is the manager of the Irish women’s team who will face Spain in their next game on Sunday. Then it’s the big test against New Zealand. The top two teams in the pool will advance to the quarter-finals. The Kiwis hammered Spain in their group opener.
It’s a case of so far, so good for the Irish. Here’s hoping they can have a good run in the tournament.
It is also nice to report on great work being done at local level to help develop the elite LGFA players of the future. There was justifiable delight in the Glebe Car Park when the 2024 victorious Kerry LGFA team arrived with the Brendan Martin All-Ireland Cup. That triumph ended a 31-year famine. The Kerry U16s also had a huge win over Mayo to win the 2025 All-Ireland final.
Following on from that it was wonderful to see big numbers at Laochra, a four-day camp for girls aged 12 to 16. There was a top-class line-up of coaches, including 2024 winning managers Declan Quill and Darragh Long, Anna Maria O’Donoghue (who was also part of that successful coaching ticket), and the great Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh.
They girls took part in three workshops: one with Eric McDonnell, who was the strength and conditioning coach when Kerry won the 2024 All-Ireland, one with Michelle O’Connor, an All-Ireland-winning performance coach, and one with
Claire O’Sullivan, nutritionist for the 2024 team.
Hopefully some of these young players will form the nucleus for another senior title for Kerry over the next decade, or even sooner.
It is so important to place a big focus on girls in this age group as there is a major drop-out in all sports for young girls at around 15. Killarney is providing excellent opportunities in a wide range of sports to cater for this important cohort. Sowing these acorns will deliver growth and maturity in the years ahead.
The camp title is significant; ‘Laochra’ is

the Irish for ‘Heroes’. One hundred young heroes shared a wonderful experience, and what impressed me in particular was their mastery of the basic skills of the game.
Cricket makes its way into this column very rarely. Recently, Ireland recorded their highest-ever T20 run total to trounce Germany once again and win their fourth Women's T20 World Cup European qualifier in Rotterdam. The road to the World Cup is now open. Lloyd Tennant's side, who have also beaten the Netherlands and Italy in the round robin stage, are now in a prime position to claim one of two spots at the qualifiers in Nepal next year.
Cricket was a very popular sport in Ireland in the past when Ireland was under British rule. My research shows that it was played in Ireland as early as 1731. However, it was not for the real native Irish but for the aristocratic gentry and the wellheeled landlord.
The military also spread the game wherever they were posted. In 1792, I note that the Military of Ireland played the Gentlemen of Ireland. It became the most popular sport in Ireland, but when the GAA was founded in Thurles in 1884, the focus changed. Then in 1902 came the infamous Rule 27, better known as ‘The Ban’, banning GAA players from either participating or even watching the so-called English sports of football, rugby or cricket. The ban lasted for more than 70 years, ensuring cricket all but disappeared in much of the country. Women’s cricket got going in the early 1900s and Ireland have qualified for five World Cups. In fact, they finished fourth in 1988.
Cricket was very popular on Valentia Island, a place whose sporting identity is most often associated with Mick O’ Connell and Gaelic football. When the work was underway for the transatlantic telegraph cable to Newfoundland in 1858, English workers living on the island played cricket, and the remnants of a cricket arena are still there.
The County Kerry Cricket Club dates back to 1872 and is currently competing in the second and third divisions of the Munster Cricket League. The club is also responsible for the creation of the Kerry Twenty League in 2007. There are currently five teams involved in this league, namely: Tralee, Dingos (Dingle), North Kerry (Ballybunion), Kilcolman and Killarney.
In March 2024, I devoted a full article to cricket in Killarney, going back to the Cricket Field, which still exists on your
left-hand side as you pass over the Flesk Bridge on Muckross Road.
Kerry won their 39th All-Ireland SFC title recently and after doing the rounds in the Kingdom, Sam Maguire appeared on the pitch at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday last, to the delight of an estimated attendance of 24,000 American football fans who had travelled to Dublin for the opening game of the US College football season.
Aer Lingus promoted the College Football Classic between the Kansas Wildcats and Iowa Cyclones. This sporting occasion is a great boost to the Irish economy, estimated at €130 million and has a television audience of around 4.5 million on the American sports network ESPN. It is known as 'Farmageddon' because of the rivalry between Kansas and Iowa, the two predominantly rural states. Supporters usually stay for seven days and travel around, as you may have noticed in Killarney during the week. Next month, Ireland plays host to its first-ever regular NFL fixture when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Minnesota Vikings at Croke Park on Sunday, September 28.
The popular Street Leagues organised by Dr Crokes get underway this Friday evening in Lewis Road. They will continue for four Friday evenings, culminating in the big club night of September 19 when Kerry captain Gavin White will be welcomed back to his home club with Sam Maguire. The annual BBQ will also take place.
It’s 39 and counting for the big 4-0 of All-Ireland titles, whenever that will be. The groundwork needs to be done and last weekend it was heartening to see
the Kerry GAA Player Development Programme continuing at the Centre of Excellence at Currans. This was the second Education Day for the Kerry U16 Boys’ Development Squad. Great work as usual by Donal Daly organising. These are hopeful minors for 2026, and Kerry badly needs to win that All-Ireland. They have been so close at minor and U20 in recent years but have not been able to get the Tyrone monkey off their backs.
This holistic approach is to be admired, where confidence and resilience were identified as key components in achieving victory. Traditionally, Kerry have confidence, especially in the final stages, but resilience is crucial to bolster hopes to keep coming back when the cup seems to slip away at the final stages.
I applaud the work of the presenters, Jason McGahan, Gavin White, David Moran, Joe O’Connor, Cathal Sheridan, Joe Costello, Niamh Dwyer, Aileen Foley and Padraig Murphy. They combined to prepare these young teenagers to face the challenges of balancing their busy schedules of games and study, and how to deal with disappointments and setbacks. They are on a learning curve to manage and strengthen their physical and mental development as people and as players who aspire to wearing the green and gold geansaí.
I was privileged to witness and report on that amazing event by Fossa Youth Club, playing their way into the Guinness Book of Records by playing 5-a-side soccer for 57 hours non-stop, day and night, over the August Bank Holiday, 1975, raising funds for the new church in Fossa. Alex Rintoul and Terence Moriarty have passed to their eternal rewards, but the rest will gather for a Golden Jubilee reunion next month. Bravo Fossa, still making national headlines, and all for the good.
Flesk Valley Rowing Club recently made the long journey to the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in County Antrim.
With over 40 crews and 70 rowers across categories from under 12 to Masters, the Valley descended in great numbers upon the beautiful coastal village of Glenarm. The harbour at times was like Main Street in Killarney, and there was a fantastic atmosphere around the Valley gazebo across the whole weekend. The club is very grateful to all the families and supporters who made the long trip to support the club and cheered home all our crews so enthusiastically.
Competitors rowed their hearts out in the Valley colours, the standard of rowing was exceptional, and the club’s junior members acquitted themselves brilliantly. More important than the rowing was the fun and laughter across the weekend, and the way everyone embraced the TikTok videos, the BBC interviews and the photos with the exhausted Valley teddy ‘Lochlein’. The weekend was the culmination of long months of training on the Valley shore, and the club would like to thank their coaches and coxes for their time and encouragement this year. Thanks to Tadhg Kelly, Paul Burke, Jillian O’Neill, Colm Ó’Súillebháin, Breeda Burke, Sao-
irse Sweeney, Caoimhe Kelly, Kieran Counihan, Alison O’Sullivan, Amy Healy, Cliodhna Sweeney, John Fleming and Donal Kelly. Thanks also to Ger Sweeney for boat wrangling over the two days in Glenarm.
The Valley came home with one gold (U16 Mixed), four silvers (U12 Mixed,
U16 Boys, U16 Girls, Veteran Mixed) and four bronze (U14 Girls, U12 Girls, U21 Men, U21 Ladies) medals across the weekend and some agonising but very creditable 4th place finishes in the Masters Men, U12 Beginners, Intermediate Ladies, Junior Ladies and U18 Girls. Also well done to Flesk Valley rowers who
rowed with Valentia in the Heritage races, winning medals in the U14 Girls and U16 Boys races.
Flesk Valley are very grateful to clubs that loaned them boats for some races, including Fossa, Workmen, Templenoe and Kilmacsimon Quay, as ever epitomising the spirit and camaraderie that is always to the fore in coastal rowing. They also expressed thanks to Leo O’Connor and John Heffernan for organising and transporting the boats and oars to and from Glenarm, which was a fantastic contribution to the club, and to Kieran Counihan for carrying everything else, from Taytos to the essential hairpins.
Finally, Flesk Valley would like to thank the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation and the Antrim Coast Rowing Association for all their hard work in organising and hosting such a fantastic event. The organisation was top class from start to finish, from the on-the-water commentary and spectacular drone footage on the big screen to the wonderful food hall space.
At the time of writing there is no confirmation of the venue for next year’s event but as things stand there is no accommodation available in Antrim for August 2026. Next up for the Valley is the Killarney Regatta on Sunday, September 14 at O’Mahony’s Point.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: A dramatic final day in the group stages where any of the four teams could have qualified for the last eight or crashed out. As it transpired, we came out on the right side of things when our Senior men over-
came a stubborn Ballydonoghue effort and in the process qualified as group winners. The prize for that is a home quarter against familiar rival Glenflesk with the game throwing in on Saturday August 30th at 4pm in Direen. As it happened it was the home side that got the opening score in the first minute with Peter McCarthy and Eoghan O’Sullivan replying to go ahead after 11 minutes. We took control in the second quarter kicking four unanswered points through the boot Finbarr Murphy 0-2 Ryan O’Grady and David O’Sullivan to leave the half-time score 0-6 to 0-2 in our favour. As was the case in the first half Ballydonoghue got the opening point of the second period, but David O’Sullivan replied with a point to keep the gap at four, 0-7 to 0-3. The introduction of James O’Donoghue and Jack O’Neill was welcomed and that served to drive the team on further, with Ryan O’Grady and Finbarr Murphy adding to the tally. The final quarter was evenly contested with both sides exchanging scores with James O’Donoghue, Jamie Alade and Cian Gammell all splitting the posts. In injury time Legion extended Ryan O’Grady and Peter McCarthy put the icing on the cake of a 0-14 to 0-9 win. Team: Brian Kelly, Darragh Fleming, Daragh O’Doherty, Conor Gammell, Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Danny Sheahan, Jonathon Lyne, Denis Sheahan, Cian Gammell (0-1), Darragh Lyne, Peter McCarthy (0-2), Jamie Alade (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-3), David O’Sullivan (0-2), Ryan O’Grady (0-3). Subs used: James O’Donoghue (0-1) for David O’Sullivan, Jack O’Neill for Denis Sheahan, Josh Bowler for Finbarr Murphy, Brian O’Shea for Jamie Alade, Podge O’Connor for Conor Gammell.
MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: Our minor boys travelled the long road to Waterville on Thursday evening to face the South Kerry District team with players from nine clubs, including familiar faces from Na Fianna, who they recently edged in a great Division County League Division 1 Shield final. The evening was perfect for football, and the hosts started brightly scoring from two turnovers to get a point and a goal a race into a lead. At one stage South Kerry were seven up but the lads found their rhythm and two fine team goals from Brían O’Shea and Oisin Fleming gained parity before South Kerry edged in front at the break, although a great long distance effort from Finan Blackwell hit the uprights on the stroke of half time. The second half was another excellent half of football, with two teams playing positive football. Legion’s back six were working hard to contain an impressive South Kerry forward line that included Kerry minor Kevin Griffin. Another great goal finished by Finan Blackwell brought them close, but with time running out, the district side went into a four-point lead, aided by a Griffin two point free. But showing great resilience, and in injury time, the hard-working Le-
gion players forced a team press turnover when South Kerry was playing keep ball, and Sean Pierce set up Brian OShea for a great goal. Winning the ball again from the resultant kickout and nearly got their just rewards from the game when Sean Pierces shot narrowly edged the wrong side of the right post. All in all, it was a superb effort by the lads and a performance they can build on when the quarter finals come in two weeks. Final score: South Kerry 1-19 Killarney Legion 4-9.
SENIOR LADIES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP:
Our Senior ladies travelled to Glenbeigh on Sunday to take on Cromane in Round 2 of the Bon Secours Junior A Championship. The home team took the points in a one-sided victory and booked their place in the knockout stages. However all is not lost as we travel to play ISG in two weeks’ time knowing a win could secure a quarter final spot. Team: Amy Walshe, Meabh Healy, Kiah Doona, Shania Costello, Chloe Hue, Zena Shine, Aine Fitzgerald, Kate McCarthy (0-04), Eve Coffey (1-00), Aine Devlin, Andrea Murphy (0-02), Emily Brosnan, Laura Healy (0-03), Orianne McGillycuddy, Ciara Randles’s (0-02). Subs: Eva O’Shea for Orianne McGillycuddy, Kate O’Toole for Kiah Doona, Aoife Healy for Laura Healy, Lauren Carey for Aine Devlin, Aisling Cahill for Chloe Hue.
U10 BOYS: Our U10 boys were in Tralee to play Kerins O’Rahillys during the week. Three keenly contested games ensued with some great displays of skill, effort, and teamwork. Thank you to Padraig and Declan in Rahillys for hosting us. A big thank you to Oliver, Jamie, Daniel, Elliot, and Jonah, who got the call up from the U8’s.
U14 LADIES: Our U14 Ladies faced Dr. Crokes at home on Tuesday night in what proved to be a high-octane and hardfought Round 2 clash of the East Kerry Division 2 campaign. From the throw-in, the game was played with incredible intensity. Legion delivered a full team performance, marked by sharp distribution, relentless defending, and some hardearned scores. Despite kicking a few wides in the first half, the girls remained composed, and only a single point separated the sides at halftime. The second half saw Legion come out with renewed grit and determination. The forwards began to find more space, leading to three clinical goals and a string of superb points from play. Every player stepped up, showing real heart and teamwork to see out the game on the winning side. A big thank you to our referee Sean Courtney for officiating, and to Dr. Crokes for a very sporting and competitive game. Final score Killarney Legion 7-13 Dr Crokes 6-9.
U16 LADIES: Our U16s booked their place in the U16 County League Division 2 Final on Thursday evening after a titanic battle in Direen. Trailing by three points at half time and still a point down with just three
minutes to play, the girls showed great composure and spirit to tag on two late scores and seal the win. Thanks to Abbeydorney for a very sporting game and to the referee for officiating. The girls now look forward to the final, scheduled for tonight week, where they will face the winners of Austin Stacks v Listowel. Final score Killarney Legion 2-12 Abbeydorney 3-8.

LADIES: The Spa Senior Ladies opened their Bon Secours Junior A Championship campaign this morning when they travelled to Ballymacelligott. It was a very warm day with a strong wind going down the length of the pitch. Spa won the toss and chose to play with the wind. Ballymacelligott opened the score line, but Spa quickly followed with a point from a well taken free by Saoirse Kelly who captained Spa in place of the injured Ciara Moynihan. This score seemed to settle Spa, and they took full advantage of the wind at their backs and finished the first half in the lead with a score of 1-05 to 0-02 thanks to an excellent goal from Ciara O’Sullivan in the 19th minute. Ballymacelligott had their chances too but hit 7 wides in the first half. The second half was the same old cliche of “a game of two halves” as Ballymacelligott came out of the dressing rooms on a mission and took some lovely scores while also keeping Spa scoreless until the 51st minute (a free by Saoirse Kelly), but Ballymac continued to play lovely fast attacking football and their subs had a strong impact in the game especially Cora Savage. Lottie Maher coming off injured early in the second half was a blow for Spa and players tired a little in the hot weather towards the end but all in all it was a very strong display from Spa against an excellent Ballymacelligott side. The final score was 1-11 to 1-07 to Ballymacelligott. Spa will next play Laune Rangers on Sunday 7th September at home in Spa at 12 noon. NOTES: Any items for our notes please contact Leanne 085 7762411.

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa were away to Kilcummin in the last round of the group stages of the Intermediate championship on Sunday. The first half was pedestrian enough, maybe the fact that both teams had qualified for the next round was the reason for this. Fossa, with the aid of the wind opened the scoring with a David Clifford point, Kilcummin replied before Kieran O’Sullivan put Fossa back in front with a good point. Again, Kilcummin took the lead but an Emmett O’Shea free and a monster two pointer from David Clifford had Fossa in front 0-5 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes of play. Two Ted O’Gorman scores gave Fossa a slender lead at the break 0-8 to 0-7 but Kilcummin had the aid of the breeze to come in the second half. On the resumption Kilcummin took over completely, driven on by the impressive Matt Keane who scored seven points from play, they gained control around the middle third of the pitch and had built a commanding lead of five points after ten minutes. David Clifford did kick a free and Paudie Clifford added a point from play, but Kilcummin drove home their midfield superiority to run out easy winners on a scoreline of Kilcummin 0-22 Fossa 0-10. The one positive from Fossa’s perspective is that Paudie Clifford got game time and he will certainly be needed from the off next weekend, regardless of the opposition. Team: Shane O’Sullivan, Dan O’Connell, Ted O’Gorman 0-2, Sam Buckley, Kieran O’Sullivan 0-1, Eoin Talbot, Paddy Sheehan, Cian O’Shea, Matt Rennie, Killian Buckley, Darren Ryan, Rian Colleran, David Clifford 0-5, Emmett O’Shea 0-1, Harry Buckley, Anthony O’Keeffe, Brian Myers, Dan O’Keeffe, Fintan Coffey, Paudie Clifford 0-1. Kilcummin GAA
SENIORS: Kilcummin secured a home quarter final in the Kerry Petroleum Club
Championship Intermediate Championship following an impressive second half performance which saw us defeat Fossa on Sunday in front of a packed house. James Foley’s side who will now face Listowel next Saturday evening August 30th at Kilcummin (6pm throw in), trailed at the break 0-8 to 0-7 made the better of the conditions in the second half as they went on to secure a 0-22 to 0-10 win. Matt Keane and Philip O’Leary impressed with 0-11 between them but more significant was the spread of scorers which saw 10 different players all register at least a score. Make sure to come out and support the lads on Saturday in what is a very open Intermediate championship. Also a big thank you to all the volunteers that helped out for the game with a bigger crowd than normal it was heartening to see all the extra help from roadside stewards, to gate stewards to those helping parking the cars. It was also all hands-on deck in the shop and the club appreciates all the great help.
UNDER 16 BOYS: Congratulations to the under 16B players and management after a fantastic display in the Under 16 Division 10 County League final which saw Kilcummin crowned champions after a 3-14 to 4-5 win at Austin Stack Park. A massive well done to the players and management for such a great display.

COMPETITION: Last Friday evening the 22nd of August, our Annual Juvenile Competition was held at Barfinnihy Lake - A fantastic turn out of juvenile anglers enjoyed lovely fishing conditions, without a midge to be seen! 35 anglers partook in the competition, many catching their first trout which was a great experience for both child and accompanying parent! The top rod on the night was Ian O’Leary, who also landed the heaviest fish, a lovely rainbow trout. Ian was presented with the Scruffy's Cup on the night by Club Chairman DJ O’Riordan. It was great to see the cup being fished for once again as it was dormant for many years but with the revival of strong juvenile angling interest has once again put it up for winning. Second place on the night went to the rod of Max Kennedy and in third position was Ronan Linehan. Many Thanks must go to all the parents and volunteers who showed up to assist the anglers and a special word of Thanks to the IFI personnel present on the night , ably led by Tim Moore , who gave great guidance to the anglers and kept a careful watch on proceeding ensuring all made it safely up and down from the lake without incident. Also a word of thanks to the prize sponsors of the event, with Denis O’Neill of O'Neill's Tackle Store Plunkett Street and Liam Buckley supplying great prizes for the event. Following on from this competition, we are delighted that

It carries bacteria and parasites such as Toxocara Canis, which can cause serious illness in children and adults, including stomach upsets, infections, and even eye damage leading to vision loss. Dog fouling left on paths, parks, and play areas is a risk to everyone in our community. By cleaning up after your dog, you help keep our public spaces safe, healthy, and welcoming for all. Bag it. Bin it. Every time.
