Green Lane car park approved with specific conditions

with 38 of them objecting to the proposal.

€1.6 million project involves a 15-year lease of the property for car park use.

Councillors Maura Healy-Rae, Brendan Cronin, Niall Kelleher, and Marie Moloney voted in favour of the car park.

Mayor Martin Grady and Councillors John O’Donoghue and Niall O’Callaghan voted against the proposal.

Plans for a new 139-space car park at Green Lawn in Killarney have received approval from Killarney Municipal District Council. Key conditions outlined in the approved report state that fencing will be erected at the rear of properties on Pond Lane, pending agreement from the majority of residents. Fencing will also be put up along the boundary with Green Lane. Additionally, a condition will be inserted into the planning permission ensuring the car park is used solely for vehicle parking, with no other events permitted on the site.

Councillors held a special meeting with management on Wednesday to review the plans before the vote was taken. The

The council considered a report and recommendations from the chief executive in line with planning and development acts for the facility, located off New Street.

Public engagement saw 43 submissions,

Despite concerns, an original plan to allow an entrance and exit from Mission Road was retained.

An Garda Síochána had previously recommended that the exit be routed only via the adjoining New Street car park onto Beech Road.

Concerns raised in earlier discussions included potential for anti-social behaviour, pedestrian access, and increased congestion on Mission Road.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said: “It is beyond me how anybody could vote against this, something is going to be built there sooner or later. A car park is the least invasive.”

Headford mourns Paudie O’Rahilly in Flesk tragedy PAGESIX

There is deep sadness in Glenflesk following the death of local man

Paudie (Padraig) O’Rahilly, who drowned in the River Flesk on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the river shortly after 3pm following reports of a man in difficulty in the water near the Woodlawn area of Killarney.

Paramedics, fire service crews, a doctor, and members of the public assisted at the scene. Mr O’Rahilly, aged in his late 20s and from Headford was recovered from the water and pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Gardaí are treating the incident as a trag-

ic accident.

Paudie was a well-known figure in the local GAA community, having played with Glenflesk at all levels from underage to senior. He was part of the club’s 2018 East Kerry campaign and contributed to the Division 6 team’s promotion in 2022.

Club vice-president Derry Healy said the news was a huge shock. “They are a lovely, honest family. This is a tragedy for them and the whole community,” he said.

Paudie is survived by his mother Margaret, father Liam, and siblings Valerie, Maureen, and Nathan. Funeral arrangements will be confirmed later.

Mayor Grady explains 'No' vote

Mayor Martin Grady was one of three councillors who voted against the new car park at Green Lawn.

He believes the location is wrong and will worsen traffic issues in the town. According to Mayor Grady, the €1.6 million project will primarily replace onstreet parking spaces that have been lost to on-street dining since the pandemic. He pointed out that the council had passed on an offer of ground on Upper High Street and also questioned why the council's own lands, between the existing car park and the Áras Phádraig, could not be used for at least 30 spaces. Mayor Grady stated that he could not ignore the public's opinion, noting that out of 45 submissions received, 38 were objections to the plan.

Parish Mission relaunches after twelve year absence

St Mary’s Cathedral administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, has announced that a parish mission will take place this September, the first in Killarney in 12 years.

The mission will run from Sunday, September 21 to Friday, September 26 and will be led by the Redemptorist team, headed by Fr Laurence Gallagher. It will include Masses, prayer sessions, and events aimed at bringing the community together.

“An idea was put forward at a parish council meeting, that we as the Killarney community, should undertake a Redemptorist Mission. The council unanimously ran with this idea and have been busy putting plans in place to host this big event.” said Fr O’ Brien “It is time for us to come together as a Killarney people, to pray, to reflect, to unite and to take time out to revive our own spiritual journeys.”

All local schools will be involved, with pupils taking part in Masses and helping as ushers at evening services. Preparations have already begun, including artwork by primary school students. Masses will take place at 7am and 10am in the Cathedral, 9.30am in the Church of the Resurrection, and 7pm evening sessions in the Cathedral. A full schedule will be delivered to homes and shared on the parish Facebook page in the coming weeks.

The closing night will focus on the theme Celebrating Community, with local groups invited to take part.

sic groups, and volunteer organisations are all encouraged to make contact via: killarney@dioceseofkerry.ie by Tuesday, August 19th to be included. Fr. O’Brien said the event is an opportunity for Killarney to unite in prayer and community spirit.

Kudos Family Fun Day a huge success

The Killarney Advertiser team hosted a very successful family fun day on Sunday which drew a huge turnout from the people of Killarney and strong support from local businesses.

The event was part of Kudos, an initiative that was launched earlier in the year which aims to bring everybody together and to celebrate local community spirit. The event took place at the Killarney Racecourse on Sunday afternoon. The day was filled with entertainment, laughs and lots of fun for the whole family. Our MC Kieran Healy kept the crowd entertained and hosted the much-anticipated raffle. The talented young musicians from the Killarney School of Music performed along with the very popular Donal Lucey. Tony Moore from a Time to Party delivered fun for all ages with bouncing castles, obstacle courses, magic shows and facepainting. Lily MacMonagle from the MACademy hosted Taylor Swift dance workshops which was very popular among the kids. Delicious

food was served up by the Racecourse Café and the brilliant Fishbox who came all the way from Dingle for the day. My Secret Balloons, a local balloon company in Killarney, added a splash of colour with their beautiful balloon arches. Autism Friendly Killarney provided a quiet zone for neurodivergent and autistic children. All raffles and donations were in aid of Autism Friendly Killarney with more than €1,400 being raised for the organisation. The raffle prizes were kindly donated by the team at Mr Price and spot prizes were sponsored by local Killarney businesses.

A huge thank you to everybody who supported us. We truly couldn’t have done it without our amazing contributors and everyone who came out on the day. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

An Post to issue Monsignor O’Flaherty postage stamp

An Post will issue a special commemorative stamp to mark the centenary of the ordination of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty.

The decision follows a proposal made by the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society in 2023.

The official issue date for the stamp is yet to be confirmed but is expected in late October.

The final stamp design will be unveiled closer to, or on, the issue date and will be a "W" stamp, suitable for worldwide mailing, reflecting Monsignor O’Flaherty's global story.

It will be available in selected Post Offices for at least three months from its issue date, with some offices potentially holding stocks longer. The stamp will also be available online at An Post's website (https://www.anpost.com/Shop/Special-issue-stamps) for a year from the issue date.

A specially designed ‘First Day Cover Envelope’ will also be available online. This marks the second stamp issue this

year commemorating a Kerry man, following the recent stamp for the 250th Anniversary of Daniel O’Connell’s birth. The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society expressed its delight with An Post's decision to honour the Monsignor's ordination.

Planning permission sought for 134 houses on Ross Road

A major private housing project is being proposed for Killarney, with Homeland Projects Ltd seeking planning permission from Kerry County Council to build 134 units off Ross Road.

The development will include 65 houses, made up of 55 three-bed and 10 four-bed homes, alongside 51 two- and three-bed townhouses and 18 one- and two-bed apartments.

A creche with capacity for 102 children is

also planned to meet increased childcare needs. The site, already accessed from Ross Road, would gain an additional vehicular entrance and a pedestrian access point. A total of 235 parking spaces are proposed, and under social housing requirements, 27 units would be allocated to Kerry County Council.

The site is near existing residential areas, and the company says the development will help meet strong local housing demand

Killarney woman launches letter campaign in aid of Palestine

A Killarney mother has launched a campaign called Write the Wrong 4 Gaza urging people to write letters to the US embassy in Dublin to protest against the ongoing situation in Gaza.

The campaign, supported by Killarney for Palestine, is encouraging people to get involved in a simple but powerful way, through letter writing. Siobhan Ashe is the founder of the campaign,

and she felt compelled to take action after seeing what was happening in Gaza. She said: “We want people to feel empowered to do something, maybe protesting on the street is not for you, but everyone can write a letter. If you want to do something, this is for you.” More information on the campaign along with letter samples can be found on their Instagram page ‘WriteTheWrong4Gaza’.

“Ciarraí Abú and a bodhrán to prove it”

– A day at Variety Sounds with Pat O’Connor

If you ever want to experience a masterclass in charm, wit, and the universal power of music, walk through the doors of Variety Sounds in Killarney. Better yet, walk in on a day when Kerry have just claimed the Sam Maguire and Pat O’Connor is holding a bodhrán that reads ‘Ciarraí Abú’. I did just that!

Pat is celebrating two big milestones this year. He is celebrating 75 glorious years on planet Earth and 45 years at the helm of this musical mecca. And if there was ever a shop that sounded like its owner, it's this one: warm, lively, unpredictable, and stocked to the ceiling with stories.

We sat – well, we stood, mostly, because customers came and went like tides and talked about the early days. “I opened in 1980,” Pat began, “and the first sound in the shop wasn't a guitar or a banjo – it was the hum of car stereos.”

Now, when Pat says car stereos, he doesn’t mean Bluetooth and Spotify. He means the eight-track monsters you could hear before you saw them, followed by the four-track, where you'd have to turn the tape mid-journey physically. “It was grand,” Pat said, grinning, “until Sharp brought out the auto-reverse. Then things got very smooth.” Cue the twinkle in his eye.

“You see Marie,” Pat said, lowering his voice like a man about to reveal the secret to life itself, “I know from personal experience the convenience auto-reverse brought to motoring.” And with that, he chuckled like a man who knew exactly how to cue up a romantic mixtape without ever interrupting the mood.

“You’re cruisin’ with a lady friend, and just as you’re impressing her with The Power of Love, you don't have to fumble for the tape awkwardly. No, Sharp has you covered. Just sit back and let love – and the music – play on.”

Sharp. The true unsung hero of courtship. The conversation bounced, much like Pat himself, from nostalgia to modern-day

hustle. “We moved onto CDs, of course. They flew out the door. Still do, would you believe?” And of course, musical instruments soon found their way in, from tin whistles and guitars, to accordions, ukuleles, and everything in between.

As we chatted, people wandered in and out. Tourists, children, seasoned musicians, curious passers-by. No two alike.

But each one received the same greeting: “Welcome to Killarney!” followed by an offer of help that was tailored, thoughtful, and sometimes bilingual. It was like watching a DJ mix styles, rhythms, and generations — all in the form of customer service.

“Do you play anything yourself, Pat?” I asked during a lull. He paused. “I used to play the button accordion and the harmonica,” he said, “but enough said. I’m better at selling them

now.” He burst out laughing. I did too. A man who knows his strengths. And he’s not in it alone either. Murt, his right-hand man, is what Pat calls a “very valued member of the team”. More customers in and out. Picture Pat juggling guitar strings, giving advice on amps, and somehow knowing exactly where everything was in his Aladdin’s cave of sound.

I shared a story about my daughter Clodagh, and the red guitar that shimmered in the window like it was made for her. Pat and Murt helped her buy it bit by bit, busking until it was hers. That support? It wasn’t just financial. It was emotional. Encouragement dressed up as commerce. “We do trade-ins too,” Pat reminded me. “So, if she ever wants to trade in or needs a repair, tell her she’s always welcome back.”

And she’s not the only one. Musicians of every calibre have walked through these doors – Peyton Taylor (check out Variety Sounds Instagram for a 'live' at Variety Sounds from Peyton, she's class), Tommy Fleming, Ronny Drew, The Wolfe Tones, and more. Pat tells me he once just missed comedian Tommy Tiernan due to a coffee break that ran a few minutes too long. “Back in five minutes,” he explained. “Unfortunately, the poor man wasn't on my clock!”

And it’s not just locals and big names who’ve taken notice. Variety Sounds has also caught the international eye. Pat has been featured in Lonely Planet and some New York publication he can’t quite recall. “I’m brutal at remembering those things,” he admitted, waving the thought away. “They said lovely stuff, though!” You’d think these clippings would be proudly displayed, framed and hanging behind the counter. Not a single one graces the walls. “Ah sure look,” Pat says, “the customers coming back in is the best review I could ask for.”

Of course, Pat’s flair for innovation didn’t stop at stereo systems. When the mobile phone entered Irish life in the early ‘90s, he was there, selling “Ready to Go” 088 mobiles. “It took me a month to sell the first one,” he laughed. “And then another six weeks for the connection paperwork to go through. Imagine trying that today!” One customer even traded in a musical instrument to buy a phone, which Pat says left the Vodafone CEO gobsmacked at a marketing meeting in Dublin. Naturally. As our conversation wound down, I asked Pat what he loved most about his job. He didn’t hesitate.

“It’s the people. Always the people. Seeing someone buy their first tin whistle and come back years later for a concertina, that’s pure joy. I’ve made friends for life. And you know what? Over the 45 years, I always ask visitors their thoughts on Killarney. Not one complaint. Not one. Isn’t that fantastic?”

It really is, I agreed.

If you're on College Street, call by to see the bodhrán that says ‘Ciarraí Abú’, and ask him to tell you about the Sharp auto-reverse. You'll come for the gear, sure but you’ll stay for the stories, the warmth, and the tunes that somehow follow you out the door.

Happy 75th Pat. And happy 45th to Variety Sounds. A shop, a time capsule, a beating heart to the rhythm of Killarney.

Final White-Tailed Eagle chicks released in Killarney National Park

The final chicks of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) White-Tailed Eagle Reintroduction Programme have been released into the wild at Killarney National Park, marking the conclusion of the 18-year project.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, attended the event, where four young eagles were released. These birds are part of the final group of 26 chicks to be introduced this year.

The programme, which began in 2007, has seen a total of 245 chicks reintroduced to Ireland after the species’ extinction in the 19th century. In partnership with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, the NPWS has worked with local farmers and communities to restore the population.

Killarney has played a key role in the project, with two chicks successfully fledging in the National Park for the fourth year in a row. The birds, which feed on fish, waterbirds, and carrion, benefit from the park’s tall nesting trees, secluded environment, and plentiful food supply.

All released chicks are fitted with satellite tags to monitor their movements. While the species is now well established, threats such as poisoning, avian flu, and

severe weather remain.

Speaking at the release, Minister O’Sullivan described the programme as a lasting legacy, noting that breeding pairs are now found from Cork to Donegal.

Norway’s Ambassador to Ireland, Aslak Brun, praised the international cooperation and called the project an example for other conservation efforts.

NPWS Director General Niall Ó Donnchú said the work combined science, community involvement, and long-term dedication. Eamonn Meskell, NPWS Divisional Manager in Killarney, welcomed the continued presence of the eagles in the park and highlighted the ideal habitat it offers.

The second phase of the project, launched in 2020, aimed to strengthen the breeding population established during the original 2007–2011 releases. There are now around 150 individual eagles in the wild across Ireland, with 17 known breeding pairs.

Urgent need for lake base after seven kayakers rescued

Killarney Water Rescue, Search and Recovery Team is highlighting the urgent need for a permanent base on Lough Lein following the rescue of seven kayakers last week.

The team responded to an emergency call after the kayakers were caught in sudden, extreme weather conditions. The group's leaders sought shelter and called for help, and all seven were successfully brought to shore at Ross Castle.

The operation was challenging due to the dangerous conditions and very low water levels on the lake. The team also received assistance from members of

the public during the rescue.

Following the incident, the Killarney Water Rescue team stated that the event again shows the need for a dedicated lakeside base.

Currently, rescue equipment is stored in private homes away from the shore. This arrangement extends response times to emergency calls, which can delay the rescue or recovery of people in distress.

Audiologist provides top tips on how to protect ageing ears

In Ireland one in twelve people experience hearing loss. This rises to half for those over 70. Age-related hearing loss, known as presbycusis, is a natural part of ageing.

Presbycusis develops gradually, usually affecting both ears. Colin O’Brien, an Audiologist with Hidden Hearing which is located on Scott’s Lane, has advised common signs of age-related hearing loss. These include:

• Struggling to follow group conversations in noisy settings

• People sounding like they are mumbling

• Needing to turn the TV volume up more often.

Colin’s top tips for protecting hearing are:

• Limiting prolonged exposure to loud noises

• Using ear protection such as earplugs in loud environments

• Removing earwax professionally rather than attempting home remedies.

Tinnitus affects around 15–20% of people and is becoming increasingly com-

mon in younger adults. It is often caused by damage to the tiny hair cells in the inner ear and can range from temporary to persistent. While there is no cure, there are effective ways to manage tinnitus and reduce its impact on daily life.

Colin said age-related hearing loss is common, but with early action and the right care, you can stay connected to the sounds and people you love. Addressing hearing loss promptly can improve communication, maintain independence, and reduce the risk of isolation, depression, and even cognitive decline.

People who are concerned about their hearing can visit Hidden Hearing in their Killarney clinic at Unit 5, Scott Street or call 064 663 0044 to arrange a free hearing test and consultation.

Rare Natterjack Toads released into the wild

Rare Natterjack Toads were released into the wild in Castlegregory last Friday.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan travelled to Kerry last week for the occasion. Since 2016, 13,000 juvenile Natterjacks have been released into the wild in a joint project between National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Fota Wildlife and Oceanworld Dingle. So far this year, 2,000 toadlets have

been released around Castlemaine and Castlegregory. The Natterjack population has declined over time due to land reclamation and as agricultural practices changed. When they are released back into the wild, Natterjacks typically breed in shallow sunny ponds to avoid predators. This conservation project involves NPWS staff collecting spawn from ponds, which are brought to Fota Wildlife Park where they are cared for and reared in special holding tanks. This

approach, known as headstarting, has been shown to reduce their mortality rate to as low as 25%. Following metamorphosis, the toadlets are returned to the wild in Kerry. Minister O’Sullivan spoke about the importance of the Natterjack Toad. He said: “The Natterjack really needs our help, as it is a ‘boom or bust’ species with varying breeding success each year. This headstarting programme provides a much-needed boost to its small population.”

Taylor Swift announces new music

Taylor Swift surprised fans this week when she announced her upcoming 12th studio album The Life of a Showgirl.

The album will be released on October 3 and is available to pre order on her website. This will be her first release since The Tortured Poets Department dropped in April 2024. The pop superstar sent the internet into a frenzy during the week when she made the announcement on the New Heights podcast which is hosted by her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce. Swift confirmed the track list, which has 12 songs and includes a feature from Sabrina Carpenter. She revealed that she worked on this album while she was touring Europe last summer. Swift has had an incredibly busy few years. She wrapped up her record-breaking Eras Tour in December 2024, after a two-year global run. In May 2025, she made headlines by reclaiming ownership of her masters, following the re-recording of four out of her six early albums

Broadcast date for The Traitors Ireland confirmed

The highly anticipated The Traitors Ireland will premiere on RTÉ One on August 31.

Hosted by Derry Girls star Siobhan McSweeney, the reality television series was filmed in Slane Castle earlier this year. Based on a hit international format, The Traitors Ireland brings together a group of strangers in the castle. Hidden among the players are the

Traitors, whose goal is to eliminate the others and make it to the end without being caught. Meanwhile, the remaining players, who are known as the Faithful, must work together to unmask the Traitors before it’s too late. €50,000 is up for grabs for those who go undetected during the game. Kevin McGahern will host the sister show The Traitors Ireland Uncloaked which will feature celebrity

guests and banished players for the best analysis and reaction to every episode. The concept of the show was originally created in 2021 by IDTV and launched in the Netherlands. The format of the show has become so popular it has been adapted by several other countries. The Traitors UK was so successful it has commissioned a celebrity series which is set to premiere this year.

10% of Irish adults have had romantic relationship with AI

New research has revealed that almost 10% of adults in Ireland have had a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot.

The survey, commissioned by broadband and telecoms provider Pure Telecom, sheds light on a growing trend in Ireland. National mental health charity Turn2Me said these results highlight the growing loneliness pandemic in Ireland. The survey also found that a further 12% of adult wouldn’t rule out such a relationship in the future. Turn2Me stated that human interaction is vital to counteract loneliness and these findings are a stark indicator of the deepening social isolation many people are facing in Ireland. Turn2Me outlined reasons as to why this highlights such a pandemic in the country. Rising AI intimacy, a normalisation of AI romance,

a digital displacement of human interaction, potential mental health implications and a reflection of wider social challenges are among the reasons. The charity warned that romantic connections with AI are “completely insufficient” for longterm emotional wellbeing and may, over time, worsen feelings of isolation. Fiona O’Malley, CEO of Turn2Me, voiced her concerns about the figures. She said:

"While AI chatbots may provide temporary comfort, they cannot replace the depth, nuance and mutual support of human relationships. We urge anyone feeling isolated to reach out for support, whether that’s through friends, family, or services like Turn2Me, because loneliness is not something you have to face alone.” Turn2Me are encouraging people feeling lonely to sign up for courses or to groups to ease the loneliness.

Fota Wildlife Park announces birth of two red panda cubs

Two endangered red panda cubs were born in Fota Wildlife Park in June.

The cubs are the offspring of threeyear-old mother Suzi, who arrived at Fota Wildlife Park from Berlin Zoo, and seven-year-old father Grga, who was transferred from Zagreb Zoo in Croatia in June 2019. For now, the cubs remain in the nesting box, sleeping and nursing with their mother, and are not yet visible to the public. In the next three weeks, the cubs will start to explore the habitat outside their nesting box for brief periods in the early morning or late evening under the careful supervision of their mother. The red panda is listed as endangered with its population declining in the wild. The parents at Fota Wildlife Park are part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), a collaborative initiative among European zoos and wildlife parks to ensure the survival of threatened species through coordinated breeding efforts. Red pandas are primarily herbivorous, with bamboo

shoots making up the bulk of their diet. At Fota Wildlife Park, they are fed freshly harvested bamboo grown on-site. The sheltered and temperate climate of Fota Island provides ideal conditions for bamboo cultivation, ensuring a sustainable and nutritious food supply. Their diet is occasionally supplemented with fruits, insects, and small animals, especially during the warmer months.

Central Bank expands credit union lending limits

The Central Bank of Ireland has announced changes to lending rules for credit unions, giving them more flexibility to offer home and business loans to their members.

The move, announced on Thursday August 14, follows a review of credit union lending and a public consultation. The Central Bank says the updated framework is designed to support the sector’s growth while remaining fit for the future.

Under the changes, lending limits will be separated. Housing loans can make up to 30% of total assets while business loans can make up to 15% of total assets. These new limits, which will come into effect from September 30, will apply

to all credit unions and are expected to boost the sector’s total lending capacity from €2.9 billion to €9.9 billion.

Mary-Elizabeth McMunn, the deputy Governor of the Financial Regulation, said the new limits will allow credit unions the ability to sustainably develop into the future. She said: “While the measures will provide more flexibility and capacity to engage in house and business lending, it is our expectation that credit unions planning to avail of the changes will do so in a phased, prudent, and sustainable manner. We also expect credit unions to continue to develop the skills, expertise and risk management necessary for this type of lending.”

Five clubs currently compete in the regatta, with histories stretching back to the

1800s when the sport was closely tied to estates and local businesses.

Strong turnout for Tesla Test Drive Event at Ballygarry

Tesla’s test drive event at Ballygarry Estate Hotel and Spa last Sunday drew a steady crowd of owners, fans, and curious first-timers.

The day offered a chance to hear real-world stories from Tesla drivers, as well as to get behind the wheel of the latest models.

One owner told how she drove her 231 Model 3 from Ballyduff to Newry, Co Down, on a single charge. She stopped briefly in Moneygall but didn’t need to charge until she reached Newry. She added that she could have reached Belfast if she had wanted to push it.

Another visitor took the brand-new Model Y for a spin and was so impressed he phoned his wife. She arrived shortly after

in a Volkswagen SUV, swapped cars, and headed off on her own test drive.

Adding to the atmosphere, the local classic car club held a Cars and Coffee meet earlier in the day. With vintage motors parked alongside high-tech EVs, there was a 'Back to the Future' feel around the grounds.

Tesla staff were on hand throughout the day to explain the technology, safety features, and performance of the cars.

Those who registered and completed a test drive received a voucher for the hotel’s restaurant or bar.

The event is part of Tesla’s ongoing partnership with Ballygarry Estate Hotel and Spa, which in 2021 became the first hotel in Ireland to install an official Tesla Supercharging Station

The Stranger I’ll Not Forget You

By the late Lawrence Carolan (Inchicullane, Killarney)

I heard a knock upon my door

And so I opened it wide

A stranger stood there in the cold I beckoned him inside

He looked at me with a saddened smile and asked if he could stay a while

His clothes were ragged, his feet were bare I bade him sit in my fireside chair

I gave him food and as he dined

He said that I was very kind

He said we'd meet again some day

And then he went upon his way

That night I called into a church

To say a little prayer I glanced up at the crucifix

And what did I see there

A wounded body hung in disgrace

With blood and tears upon his face

Absent was the saddened smile

Of the one who asked to stay a while

His clothes were ragged, his feet were bare

Our Saviour sat in my fireside chair

There's a moral to this story

Of love and charity

And if someone poor knocks on your door

Don't ask who can that be?

Just remember what the good Lord said, long ago in Galilee

What you do for these, the least of mine, You also do for me

I heard a knock upon my door, and so I opened it wide

The sky was Mary, robed and mantled and she blew her graces over the fields of beet and barley. She was going home; chuffed at the thought of it; (I’d be too).

Not a crease in her blue gown, rain-washed, wind-blown, sun-pressed. It swished in flight curling up the trees’ leaves, tossing the groomed grasses, tightening the moss in old places; making lakes quiver and rocks speak and who knows – maybe weak faith new.

“One wave of my Son’s hand,” she said, “and all could stop.

One sway of mine and it might only stir –my last majestic sweep.

A loving wave to say –

‘I’ll not forget you.’”

And then the white veil tumbled puffed and billowed round the blue.

Even the birds knew that swam around her feet, while turf sods stood, necks craned, to follow her assumption.

I was consumed.

How long in awe I do not know; The sky would! –it stood empty there.

For all its evening colour, only a low-lying golden glow I saw. It had to be a rose tossed from her risen feet; no sun could smell so sweet. And I have seen, on other days, her young, unwrinkled ribbons in a rainbow.

Dingle aiming to bounce back

Understrength West Kerry side need result to stay in competition

Last year’s beaten club and county finalists Dingle are in a do-or-die situation this weekend as defeat to Milltown-Castlemaine will eliminate them from the Kerry Senior Club Championship.

The West Kerry outfit lost by double scores to Kenmare Shamrocks in last weekend’s Group 2 opener (0-13 to 2-20) as they struggled to cope with the absence of key players like Paul Geaney, Tom O’Sullivan and Barry Dan O’Sullivan.

Milltown-Castlemaine would be considered underdogs if both teams were at full strength but they may now smell blood. Dingle will have home advantage, however, with the game taking place in Páirc an Ághasaigh on Sunday at 4pm.

Elsewhere Dr Crokes can top Group 3 with victory at home to Rathmore.

The Killarney club beat Spa in Round 1 with seven points to spare, thanks in part to goals by Gavin O’Shea and Cian McMahon, and a Man of the Match performance by Tony Brosnan.

Austin Stacks are currently out in front in Group 1 following their comfortable win against Templenoe (1-18 to 1-5). Like Crokes, they will be looking to

double down on that result at home to Tralee neighbours Na Gaeil on Friday.

In the Intermediate Club Championship, Fossa got up and running with an 11-point victory over John Mitchels. They are now joint-top of Group 1 alongside Kilcummin and they will have one foot in the quarters if they can defeat East Kerry rivals Firies at home on Saturday (7pm). Kilcummin are away to Mitchels on Saturday at 6.30pm.

In Group 2, Legion will be looking to bounce back from their five-point defeat to Laune Rangers when they host Listowel on Sunday (1pm), while Rangers welcome Ballydonoghue to Killorglin on Sunday at 3.30pm. Ballydonoghue and Emmets played out a draw last weekend.

In Group 3, An Ghaeltacht play St Mary’s (Sunday at 1.30pm) and Castleisland face Glenflesk (Sunday at 4pm).

Finally, in Group 4, it’s Kerins O’Rahillys v Gneeveguilla (Saturday at 4pm), and Glenbeigh-Glencar v Beaufort (Saturday at 5pm). The first teams named will be at home. All matches are expected to be streamed live on Clubber.

The voice of Croke

This week Eamonn Fitzgerald caught up with Kerry native Jerry Grogan who is the stadium announcer at Croke Park on match days

So many times I have been asked about the announcer in Croke Park on big match days. Earlier this week, I spoke with the person behind the voice, Jerry Grogan, a native of Cahersiveen, who spent all of his teaching career in Dublin. I have known him for many years and the marvellous work he does with Cumann na mBunscol in Dublin. He was speaking in a personal capacity and not as a spokesman for the GAA.

Eamonn Fitzgerald: Jerry, tell our readers about growing up in ‘The Town That Climbs the Mountain,’ home of football legends Maurice Fitz and Jacko (Shea) and not too far away from Valentia’s Mick O’Connell and the other great Micko, Dwyer from Waterville. Jerry Grogan: I was too young to participate in 1955 when unfancied Kerry downed the Dubs. Jerome O’Shea was a brilliant corner back. Other ‘Town’ men, Ned Fitzgerald, father of Maurice,

and Donal O’Neill (Marcus), were subs on that great team. There was a great buzz around Cahersiveen when the Sam Maguire arrived. I remember 1959 better, and the Sam Maguire on top of a car in Valentia, the home of Captain Mick O’Connell.

EF: Can you remember your school days in Cahersiveen when the Sam Maguire was brought into the classrooms?

JG: There was no tradition of bringing the cup to schools. I can’t recall it ever being brought in. My greatest school memories and influence were the Street Leagues. There was intense rivalry and when it came to the final, the teams were paraded to Con Keating Park led by the school marching band. That was magical for garsúns.

EF: Were you conscious of that effect when you became a teacher?

JG: Yes, I was very conscious of it, and I

got involved with Cumann na mBunscol when I started teaching in Dublin. I spent 40 years teaching there, most of it in Holy Trinity NS, Donaghmede, where I was principal for 10 years. In 1928, teachers were aware that Gaelic games were practically dead in Dublin. They said that the schoolchildren didn’t even know the way to Croke Park. They were more interested in the soccer and cricket in the Phoenix Park. Cumann na mBunscol goes back to 1905 but really got off the ground in a big way in 1928. The 1916 Rising and the emergence of the new Free State (in 1922/23) underlined the Republican base of the GAA.

Key factors in saving the GAA games were the influence of Pádraig Ó Chaoimh, the Ardstiúrthóir (Director General), who gave permission to play the finals of Cumann na mBunscol in Croke Park, and that was very special for the young schoolboys. Then came that master

stroke when the schools got a half-day for the finals. At present, there are 330 national schools playing in Cumann na mBunscol. All the great Dublin players first tasted the glory of playing in Croke Park in Cumann na mBunscol. These included Kevin Heffernan, Des and Lar Foley, and all the Dublin stars down to the very successful All-Ireland winners managed by Pat O’Neill, Pat Gilroy, Jim Gavin and Dessie O'Farrell. St Vincents were the top club in Dublin.

Both Mícheál Ó Hehir and Seán Óg Ó Ceallacháin told me that their fathers said that the Cumann na mBunscol teachers, in 1928, saved Gaelic games in the capital. The traditional, strong clubs in Dublin grew from the primary schools. Since the 1980s, the link with the INTO was also a huge factor. I sat down with John Joe Connolly, a proud Cavan man and INTO President. He was anxious to cement The link between primary schools and the GAA following the GAA Centenary Year in ‘84. The Mini Sevens were born, and so many great players in all codes have played in that over the years.

Park

EF: I knew John Joe well from my INTO days in Dublin in the late 60s and early 70s. He was teaching in Donnybrook. I remember schoolboy Declan O’Sullivan from Dromid playing Cumann na mBunscol games in Croker.

JG: Actually, Declan played there twice and went on to star with Kerry.

EF: You will be glad to know that CNB is thriving in your native Kerry thanks to the great volunteer work of national schoolteachers. The big change now is that over 80% of NTs are female. They continue to promote the games with enthusiasm. Of course, the great Mary Jo Curran, the only Kerry player to win nine All-Irelands, has given back so much when her playing days were over, and she still does it in retirement.

JG: Yes, I saw her at the All-Ireland final a few weeks ago – a wonderful ambassador for Cumann na mBunscol and the GAA.

Dublin Cumann na mBunscol is coming up to its centenary in 2028. That will be a great occasion suitably remembered. We have some big events in the works.

EF: How did you handle the era of the Heffo/Dwyer rivalry?

The rivalry and the media coverage en-

abled us to encourage all the players in our schools in Dublin to get involved and dream that someday they would be back as Dublin seniors. It was a special time.

EF: How important is it for the GAA to have Dublin teams – football, camogie and LGFA – in the limelight?

JG: Hugely important. Dublin is the media capital with a huge population. Dubs are great supporters. They light up the spirit on Hill 16 but also travel in great numbers to Tralee/Killarney and other away league games. I started girls’ football in the schools in 1986 with Helen O’Rourke - Ardstiúrthóir LGFA. We had six schools in a blitz in Fairview Park.

Now, girls' teams are on a par with boys with 330 schools participating. It has done wonders for girls and the whole county is behind the Dublin ladies’ team.

EF: What kind of preparation do you have to do the day of a match in Croke Park?

JG: I would have all the basic announcements well prepared from experience over the years. New stuff is rehearsed on the morning of the game. My day starts when I place the Sam Maguire on the altar for mass early on All-Ireland day. I would have been at Up For The Match the night before. It’s a great honour to accompany the iconic cup on the great occasions. There’s ample time for last-minute preparations before the stiles open on the big day.

EF: The 2025 All-Ireland final was sweet for Kerry. What was your routine on that particular day?

JG: My job includes welcoming dignitaries such as the President of Ireland, An Taoiseach and Uachtarán CLG [presently Jarlath Burns]. The team announcement is very important, especially if there are any changes from the official programme. I welcome the crowd; call the teams and all the changes during the game. I operate from the sideline just beside the tunnel where the players run out. It’s a privileged position, ‘i lár an aonaigh’ if you like. I do almost everything bilingually - that’s precious to me on our great Gaelic games days.

EF: Do you work from a prepared script?

JG: Not at all. I have a few notes to follow the protocol and then speak naturally.

EF: Even after 40 years in Dublin, there is no mistaking your Kerry accent. Were you ever tempted to adopt the upper-class Mid-Atlantic accent?

JG: I have spent so many years in Dublin that my accent may not be so strongly Kerry, but the Kerry base is there, and clarity is the most important factor.

EF: You also have the fluency and ‘blas’ for the Gaeilge. How do you decide on the language?

JG: I am confident in both languages from my upbringing in Cahersiveen and 40 years of teaching. I use the Gaeilge as often as possible. People love hearing it!

EF: Do you get nervous before going live?

JG: No, not really. I am confident in having done the announcing since 2003. I’m in my 47th year as a volunteer in Croke Park.

The last two years have been extremely tough both on and off the track, and I think it’s important to be honest and transparent about that.

Killarney Paralympian

Jordan Lee speaks to Adam Moynihan about his decision to park his high jump aspirations and take up the shot putt

Hi Jordan. You have announced that you’re making the transition from high jump to shot putt. What has led you to this decision?

I know it might come as a surprise to people – it’s a big switch up, going from high jump straight to shot putt. There are different factors at play. The last two years have been extremely tough both on and off the track, and I think it’s important to be honest and transparent about that. Some of the injuries that I’ve suffered have been really, really hard. On the leadup to Paris qualification in 2024 I ruptured ligaments in my take-off ankle. They came completely off the bone. I managed to recover and hit the qualification standard in my first competition, but then in my second competition I completely tore my patellar tendon. I didn’t realise at the time because I have tendonitis, so I kept jumping. When the pressure is on to keep performing, especially in the year that it was, I didn’t take much notice. We got it looked at, got professional advice, managed to get a cortisone shot, and there was a full recovery process. Things were looking exciting.

But then the week before Paris I tore it again. I had to give up my slot. Thankfully another athlete was able to take my spot, which was good. It wasn’t for nothing. But there was a lot of big-time injuries, all in one leg, happening pretty quickly. I could still be competitive in the sport to a degree but ultimately it’s not where I wanted to be. I’m probably past my best in the high jump, which is okay to say.

But I do know I have a lot of physical ability and, in a modest way, I do have a track record with basketball, high jump and long jump. So my goal over the next year is to develop as a shot putter and become one of the first officially recorded athletes in history to be ranked in the top 20 in three different sports.

Why shot putt?

I investigated other options but I knew with me having the one arm, it’s naturally going to be quite strong. Then from playing basketball, there’s good coordination and good control anyway. And I had been pretty decent at it just messing around with the lads. I entered myself for a competition about three months prior to making this decision and I finished second in the Kerry Championships out of 16 big, strong lads. That was an indicator that it wasn’t just an airy-fairy decision. I don’t want to just do a sport for the fun of it. I want to try and really be good at it. A lot of changes need to be made. I’m only 87kg at the moment. I’ve definitely got to get that up to 100kg, if not 105kg, which is going to be a mad change but it will ben-

Jordan Lee is shooting his shot

efit me. In high jump you’re so restricted with calory intake and food consumption. When I jumped my PB I was 77kg. I’m 6’2”. That’s very hard to maintain. So gaining a bit of size, and building on my strength, which I feel is my best attribute, will be a positive.

I’m also attempting to be the first athlete to be carded and government funded across two different sports. Logistically that was a bit of hassle initially because I have been government funded the past six years, which I’m very grateful for, but now it’s going to be gone. I’ve been a full-time athlete all this time, just dedicating everything to it, so my goal is to get back on to the carding scheme. I’m very much focussed on Europeans next year too. There are qualification standards that need to be hit for that but I feel very confident now that I’m gathering a team around me with structured training. The past couple of months I’ve just been training based on my own knowledge of shot putt while trying to have a bit of fun and trying to love sport again. Had it reached a stage where high jump just wasn’t enjoyable anymore?

Yeah, I think so. I actually haven’t said it publicly but there’s a lot of thinking with high jump and it’s just you. There is a team around you but, I mean, you might clear the bar 30% of the time. That’s about it. So there are a lot of knocks. When you jump the bar, you either clear it or you don’t. It’s very cutthroat. It’s either positive or it’s negative. You can’t just have a decent performance. Sometimes I’d like to just have a decent performance. And don’t get me wrong, I think my high jump career… Looking back on it, I would like to have achieved a lot more because I was very vocal about wanting to achieve a lot of big stuff. But I don’t regret saying those things either because you’ve got to be ambitious and try to over-achieve on your goals. To be fair, I also believed that I could achieve it. And I’ll continue to do so in the shot putt.

We had a very good run the high jump. My coaching team of Tomás Griffin, Shane O’Rourke and Alan Delaney have been extremely helpful and I want to thank them for that.

How is the knee now?

My knee has recovered and it’s feeling really good right now. I want to keep it that way. The pounding on my tendons and joints is still going to be there to a degree

with shot putt but nowhere near the same the level.

How does your training routine for shot putt compare to what you were doing previously?

The training is very different. It’s crazy. It’s extremely taxing but it’s easier mentally and physically. I’m just in the door, though; my opinion might change in two or three months!

What’s next on the agenda for you?

I’m currently four centimetres away from breaking into the top 20 in shot putt unofficially. I still need to get classified, which means they have to take measurements of my arm just to make sure I’m in the right category moving forward. That’s going to be another two months or so. Then all my results will be officially on the rankings. I’ve only thrown in two competitions in my life so to be ranked just outside the top 20 already is a pretty decent start. I’m looking forward to really pushing on. Ultimately I’m in shot putt to be one of the best in the world. I do genuinely believe that I can make an impact in the sport.

You’ve been an ambassador and an advocate for people with disabilities in sport since you were a teenager. Do you feel society is more accepting of people with disabilities now than they were when you started your sporting journey?

Because I’m a little bit more known, I will get some positive recognition now. I would notice that for myself. But that’s only on my end. One of my biggest goals in competing in the first place is to inspire people of all abilities, not just people with disabilities, and to be a leader about it. I know there are a lot of people with disabilities looking up to me and I do feel like it’s my responsibility to keep pushing it. Even last week I met a kid who has the same arm as me and his family asked me to help him tie his shoelaces. My family couldn’t do that when I was a kid because there wasn’t someone like me in the public eye to look up to.

Now that I have a bit of a platform, I want to inspire and give confidence to people that they can do whatever they want to do as long as they work hard and set their mind to it. That’s something I’m extremely passionate about. I will always be passionate about that.

Well said, Jordan. Best of luck as you begin this new chapter Thanks Adam.

Killarney Legion GAA

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Despite racing into an early 1-3 to 0-0 lead our Senior Men eventually succumbed to Laune Rangers in the opening round of the Intermediate Club Championship. The fast start was eclipsed almost as quick by Laune Rangers as they hit 2-4 without reply to lead by four with twenty minutes gone. Denis Sheahan had tipped a centre into the Austin Stack Park net to give his side the best possible start, but the Launesiders took control to lead 2-8 to 1-6 at half time. A two-pointer free from Brian Kelly and a point after a charge forward from Cian Gammell got their team back into the game and scores were exchanged at regular intervals and with the game heading for the final furlong it was up for grabs. But Laune Rangers finished the stronger, adding four further points with Brian Kelly hitting our sole reply from a 45. Final Score Killarney Legion 1-13 Laune Rangers 2-15. Listowel Emmetts will be the visitors to Direen in the next round with the game pencilled in for Sunday at 3.30pm.

SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies team travelled to Ballyrickard on Tuesday for the Corrib Oil Senior League Final where they faced Kerins O’Rahillys. Having lost to the same opposition in the same venue three weeks previous, a tough game was expected. The first half was even with the home team playing with the breeze, but some resolute defending and some great team play saw the sides level at half time, 0-6 apiece. Despite scoring the first two points of the half, Kerins O’Rahillys struck for a goal to see them lead by the minimum. The Ladies never panicked though and took control of the game from here, scoring the next 3 points. Keri Ann Hanrahan’s introduction, after an absence through injury, saw her score the next point, quickly followed by a green flag. Now dominant, some great points from Laura Healy & Kate McCarthy extended the lead before Shania Costello came forward from corner back to score another goal. Rahillys came back with further points before Laura Healy netted again to put the tie to bed. The teams traded scores in the final minutes with all Legion substitutes contributing to a Legion win on a score of Legion 3-18 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-11.

Spa GAA

SENIOR: Senior Club Football Championship Round 1. Spa v Dr Crokes. The first score of the game came in the 3rd min-

ute from the boot of Evan Cronin, a point from play following a nice move worked by Dan O’Donoghue, this was preceded by two wides by Dr Crokes Tony Brosnan & Brian Looney. It didn’t take Dr Crokes long to respond with Gavin O’Shea netting a goal in the 4th minute with a super finish to the roof of the net. Spa responded immediately with a good point from play by Daragh Moynihan, followed by 5 unanswered points 2 by Cian Tobin (frees) and Daragh Moynihan again from play in the 15th minute, David Spillane from play in the 16th minute & another free from Cian Tobin in the 18th minute to leave the scoreline Spa 0-7 to Dr Crokes 1-0. Man of the match Tony Brosnan started to come to the fore for Dr Crokes with a point either side of a 2 pointed free followed by a point from David Shaw in the 24th minute to give Dr Crokes the lead 1-05 to Spa 0-7. Evan Cronin pointed from play to level the score in the 30th minute but a pointed free by Tony Brosnan in the 32nd minute gave Dr Crokes the lead going in at the break Spa 0-8 Dr Crokes 1-06. Dr Crokes opened the scoring in the second half with a point by Tony Brosnan in the 34th minute, Spa responded with a well taken point from play by Mike Foley. David Shaw pointed for Dr Crokes, Spa missed a goal opportunity & Dr Crokes netted a goal from Cian McMahon giving Dr Crokes a five-point lead in the 47th minute. Tony Brosnan scored from play in the 48th minute & Niall McCarthy responded with a fine point from play for Spa in the 50th minute. Dr Crokes followed with two points from play, Tony Brosnan in the 53rd minute & Micheal Burns in the 54th minute giving Dr Crokes a 7-point lead, Spa 0-11 Dr Crokes 2-12. Spa responded with pointed free from Cian Tobin in the 55th minute followed by a point from play by Aidan Cronin in the 56th minute. But the final two scores of the game came from Dr Crokes to leave the final score Spa 0-13 Dr Crokes 2-14.

Dr Crokes GAA

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Dr. Crokes 2:14 Spa 0:13. Dr Crokes marked the return of six Kerry stars with a gritty win over Spa in the Senior Club Championship. Gavin O’Shea set the tone early, rifling to the net in the 4th minute. Spa hit back with a run of points, but Tony Brosnan’s accuracy and David Shaw’s hard work saw Crokes edge ahead 1-6 to 0-8 at half-time. Tony Brosnan opened the second-half scoring before Brian Looney and Evan Cronin kept the scoreboard ticking. The game’s turning point came midway through the half. David Shaw clipped over before Cian McMahon buried a superb goal to give us some breathing space. Tony Brosnan added another to cap a strong team performance, sealing an important victory on the road.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 4 FINAL: Fossa produced a brilliant performance in their county league final against Cordal in Currow on Wednesday evening. Fossa had the aid of the wind in the first half, and they made it count when Dylan O’Meara landed a monster two pointer in the second minute. Ryan Brady in goal made a couple of superb saves in quick succession before Karl James O’Neill pounced for his first goal of the game in the seventh minute and this was quickly followed by a beautiful Conor O’Mahony point from out near the sideline. Mark Kennelly and David Butler were winning great ball around the middle of the field, a brace of points from Dylan O’Meara as well as scores from Luke McCann and Fionn Doyle left Fossa with a healthy lead at the break 1-11 to 0-4. Fossa put the result beyond doubt in the first minute of the second half when after a slick passing move Karl James O’Neill crashed home a brilliant goal. Mark Kennelly was lording it at midfield with a towering display and with Fionn Doyle giving a manof-the-match performance in defence, it allowed the team to play with great confidence. Cathal Breen kicked a point and Karl James O’Neill completed his hat trick in the seventh minute before Dylan O’Meara scored a fine individual goal in the 10th minute. With our defence dealing admirably with the Cordal attack our forwards had a plentiful supply of ball and they made it count with further scores from David Butler and Karl James O’Neill to leave the final score Fossa 4-16 Cordal 1-10. This was a complete team performance and great credit must go to the management of Willie Buckley, Dermot Clifford, Mike Cahillane and Damien

Clerkin who seem to get the best out of the players when the need is greatest. Team: Ryan Brady, Jack Spillane, Jack Hallissey, Luke McCann 0-1, Derek O’Gorman, Fionn Doyle 0-1, Conor O’Mahony 0-1, David Butler 0-1, Mark Kennelly, Luke Clancy, Dylan O’Meara 1-08, Cathal Breen 0-1, Sam Clerkin, Karl James O’Neill 3-03, Ronan Bennett, Charlie Griffin, Eoin Bennett, Paddy Myers.

Kilcummin GAA

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Kilcummin will take on John Mitchels in Group 1 Round 2 of the Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Championship next Saturday 16th August away to John Mitchels with a 6.30pm throw in time.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Congratulations to our Minor Footballers who were crowned Keane’s SuperValu Division 4 Shield winners having defeated Knock/ Brosna 6-14 to 1-9. First half goals by Colm Janot, Jack Ahern and Rory O’Connor saw Kilcummin take a 3-7 to 1-3 half time lead. Kilcummin upped the ante in the second half with Sean Cox hitting 3 points while Colm Janot added his second goal before Rory O’Connor hit a brace to see him end up with a personal tally of 3-4 in an impressive performance. Well done to all the players and their management of Dave Kearney, Tommy Brosnan, Kieran O’Donoghue, Tom Cooper and John Herlihy.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALL: After a number of weeks of uncertainly our Under 16 footballers returned to the field of play taking on Killarney Legion in the opening round of a 3 way play off with a place in the Division 1 semi-finals at stake. A brace of early goals helped the winners to a 2-5 to 0-6 half time and despite Killarney Legion reducing the gap a number of times in the second half Kilcummin held out in no small way thanks a Joe O’Connor 2-pointer. Kilcummin ran out 2-13 to 1-13 winners.

KILCUMMIN GAA SUMMER CAMP

Special thank you to Donal Barry for coordinating the camp each day and keeping everything running smoothly. To Grace & Lorraine for all the help with registration. Shout out to the parents who stepped in during the week to help at short notice. We are so lucky to have people like this in our community, willing to give up their time voluntarily for the club and the kids. of our U6s & U8s to the epic U10 & U12 tournament finale.

Glenflesk GAA

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Glenflesk 0-16 St Marys 0-15 For the second time at a Mid Kerry venue this year, a last gasp Mark Kelliher 2 point free, saw Glenflesk grab victory from a perilous position, and get the perfect start to the 2025 Intermediate Championship. St Mary’s started the quicker, playing with real speed and purpose. Early points from Tadgh O’Connor and Ben O’Donoghue reward for their fast start. The evergreen Brian Sheehan was making himself available when his side attacked, moving into space and firing over a brilliant point in the ninth minute. Points from Alex Coffey and Darren Casey followed, giving St Mary’s a 6 points to 2 lead after 15 minutes. Glenflesk had been sluggish up to this stage, with a rare highlight being Killian O’Sullivan’s superb pass into Dylan Roche, ending with Roche beating his marker and fisting over. Callum Cronin added another after more good play, and then Cronin did brilliantly to keep the ball from going over the sideline, starting a move that ended with a John Kelleher point. Glenflesk’s best goal chance fell to Dylan Roche who saw his close range shot brilliantly saved by Sheehan. St Mary’s accuracy in the first half was highly impressive, only missing with 2 of their shots at goal. Nevertheless, a late Ian Roche free sent Glenflesk in level at half time, despite being outplayed for most of the half. O’Sullivan put Glenflesk ahead with a fine score with his left foot within a minute of the restart. It didn’t lead to them taking over the game though. St Mary’s responded with scores from Coffey and Casey, with Sheehan’s long kickouts putting Glenflesk on the back foot. A Darragh Roche free after 38 minutes brought Glenflesk level again. There then followed a period of scrappy play, as both sides turned the ball over cheaply. The crucial score of the game then looked like it had arrived when Sheehan hit over a 2-point free with superb accuracy. A fisted Coffey free increased the lead, but free’s from Darragh Roche brought Glenflesk back to within 1, deep into injury time. With 1 kick out left, Glenflesk needed to win it. Sheehan went long again, and Ian Roche won the loose ball. A foul on Daniel Brien just outside the 2-point arc, allowed goalkeeper Kelliher the chance to repeat his heroics from Killorglin, earlier in the year. Just as back then, he struck the ball beautifully, sending it straight between the posts with the last kick of the game.

100 YEARS OF EAST KERRY GAA: Wednesday evening, the 6th of August, was a very special one for East Kerry GAA, as we honoured one hundred years since the founding of the East Kerry Board. To mark the occasion, we were delighted to be joined by Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Jarlath Burns. After his arrival in Killarney, President Burns was greeted at Scott’s Hotel by members of the East Kerry Board. From here, The President, joined by Sam Maguire and All Ireland winning Captain Gavin White, unveiled a plaque at the site where the first meeting of the East Kerry Board took place, the Central Club (Now LANA Asian food street market, College Street). Then it was on to the Gleneagle Hotel, for an evening of entertainment, anchored brilliantly by MC Donal Barry, and the brilliant staff at the Gleneagle Hotel, to honour all those who have done such tremendous work for East Kerry GAA over the last century, and the continuing on of their legacy well into the future. Thanks again to Scotts Hotel, LANA Asian food street market and the Gleneagle Hotel for use of their facilities, and to all who have put in such hard work to make this historic event

such a tremendous success. Thanks also to President Burns for kindly giving his time to attend this special evening.

NATIONAL MEN’S STROKEPLAY: What a day in St Annes last Sunday for our Secretary Mr. Damien Fleming! He claimed the Donnelly Cup for the second time in his career this time over no less than 72 holes with a 33 under par score as he won by four from a duo which included Tralee's Jason Cregan who finished in third on countback. After the success with the Irish team last month in Lucan things are only getting better and better for Damien. He wasn’t the only prize-winner from the club for the weekend of course as there was also a silver medal won in the Intermediate event. Cillian Courtney has quietly gone about his business over the last two months since re-joining us but what a great performance to finish second in his grade after being the 36-hole leader overnight on Saturday. He fought back well in the last round to finish as runner-up as we hope to see more of him before the year is out. Cillian has replicated elder brother Creagh in finishing second in this event

which Creagh did back in Stackallen back in 2014. Honourable mentions for the weekend also go to Robbie Harnett for making the Junior cut and finishing 12th overall, again we hope to see more of him before the year is out and let’s not forget a certain Vice-Chairman of ours who was joint leader of the Intermediate event itself after 9 holes on Saturday!
