Businesses in pre-budget talks with Minister Chambers

Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers held a discussion at Gleneagle for business owners to voice their concerns ahead of next month’s budget.

The event, organised by Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, took place on Wednesday.

It aimed to give business owners an opportunity to discuss items that might affect their business in the upcoming budget.

In his opening address to the attendees, Minister Chambers explained that the Government aims to shape the budgetary process by actively responding to feedback and addressing concerns to future proof the economy.

Minister Chambers advised that his current focus right now is reducing the red tape and the bureaucracy that has built up over recent years.

He pointed out that road projects now take 15 years ago to complete, compared to just seven years in the early 2000s.

He said shortening these timelines will give life to funded projects which in turn will boost confidence within the business community.

He said that while Ireland is a point of strength in comparison to our “stagnant” European counterparts, we need

to approach the upcoming budget with a “crisis mindset” as things are subject to change.

Different issues were brought up by attendees at the event, including housing, planning, insurance and business costs. Concerns were addressed by Minister Chambers, Deputy Michael Cahill and Councillor Tommy Cahill.

PLANNING

One attendee raised concern about planning regulations, particularly in rural areas. He noted that in his locality, his house was the last to be built over twenty years ago. He said younger people are forced to move elsewhere due to the strict planning rules.

Minister Chambers acknowledged the current planning regulations are overly strict and highlighted it as an issue that needs to be addressed by Government.

He said that Minister for Housing James Browne is open to examining it further.

He explained that 32,000 homes were built last year, 50% of which were state supported. He warned that if Government were to build 50,000 houses, it

would be unsustainable to maintain the same level of State involvement.

Minister Chambers said that planning restrictions, particularly in rural areas, should be reviewed and eased where possible for those willing to do it themselves.

HOUSING

Another issue raised by an attendee was the unaffordability of housing in Killarney.

She said there are two categories: those who have a million euro to spend or those on the social housing list; there is nothing available for those in the middle. She explained that young families are being priced out of the town and that areas such as Barraduff, which is a 10-minute drive away, are now considered part of Killarney.

She noted that people in their 30s are still living at home as they simply cannot afford to move out.

In response, Minister Chambers said the most effective solution is to zone more land to meet market demand.

WATER

Fianna Fail Councillor Tommy Cahill raised the issue of wastewater infrastructure and the length of time it takes to complete. He specifically spoke about

the Beaufort wastewater plant that was allocated €6 million. He was advised in a parliamentary question that it would take seven more years before it goes through planning and construction.

Minister Chambers acknowledged that these long waiting times are “out of sync” with the economy.

INSURANCE

One business owner reported that he is paying €100,000 in insurance, and if he has a higher revenue than expected in any given year, his premium rises requiring him to pay additional amounts beyond the agreed rate.

He expressed frustration, saying he feels penalised for having a successful year in business.

After the event concluded, Minister Chambers said there is “great positivity” among the business community In Killarney.

Minister Chambers explained while the economy is still in a good place, every budget must account for growth, to continue prosperity and to invest in infrastructure.

He said the most common piece of feedback he noted in Killarney was water infrastructure, which he says has been prioritised by the Government in the new National Development Plan.

Minister Healy-Rae backs secretaries and caretakers strike

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae joined striking school secretaries and caretakers on the picket line at the Holy Cross Mercy Convent on New Road, on Wednesday.

He expressed his full support for their campaign for fair treatment and equal conditions with other public servants.

“Our school secretaries and caretakers are the backbone of our education system,” he said.

“They open the gates, take the calls, deal with parents and pupils, and keep schools safe and clean. Yet they are denied the pensions and conditions that

others rightly enjoy. That is not acceptable.”

The Minister said he and his Independent colleagues will continue to press the Government to act.

“These workers are not asking for luxuries,” he added. “They are asking for dignity, respect, and parity. This strike shows their frustration after being overlooked for too long.”

Frank Coffey shuts up shop after four incredible decades in business

After almost four decades in business, Frank Coffey has decided he will soon close the doors of his shoe shop on High Street.

It was not a decision taken lightly; the popular Killarney businessman was contemplating the huge decision for a couple of years, however two weeks ago he made the final decision to reluctantly shut up shop.

A popular shop amongst locals, Mr Coffey sold many school shoes to the locals of Killarney, one being Hollywood star Michael Fassbender.

He recalled a moment when his son met Michael Fassbender while he was in Cork one day. His son mentioned to the Hollywood actor that his dad owned a shoe shop in Killarney, and Michael Fassbender immediately remembered buying his school shoes from him.

When Mr Coffey announced his shop was closing down on social media, his Facebook post was flooded with tributes from customers past and present. Each comment complimented him, his customer service and the excellent experiences they had in store.

That is the legacy that Mr Coffey has left on the town.

Mr Coffey said his favourite thing about his business was the personal aspect to it. He took great satisfaction in helping and advising customers on what to buy.

He said: “I knew everyone, I knew what was going on in their lives, that is the one thing I will miss most of all. The banter, the craic, the communication.”

Mr Coffey attributes the decline of small businesses to the rise of online shopping, and while he would never protest the online world, he does believe it is instrumental in the breakdown of small, local businesses.

“We live in a world where the personal touch is gone. You buy your stuff online. It’s abrupt. That’s just life, people have moved on.”

He said that people often don’t consider what they’re buying or where they’re buying it from.

When shoppers choose to purchase items like shoes online, it directly impacts small, retailers.

He believes that the continued closure of local businesses will result in job loss-

es, particularly for college students who rely on part-time work to earn a few bob while studying. “Those opportunities just won’t be there for them,” he said.

He said there are no supports for small businesses from the Government and fears it will be a domino effect. He warned: “I’m one but there will be many.” He expressed his gratitude to the people of Killarney for always supporting him throughout the past 37 years. Frank Coffey shoes have 1,000 boots to clear at half price; the shop is set to close in around five weeks time.

Kneecap announce two Killarney gigs

Irish hip-hop group Kneecap will play two shows in the Gleneagle Arena later this year. The Belfast trio will take to the stage on December 12 and 13.

The announcement follows their headline slot at Electric Picnic last weekend, where they drew one of the largest crowds of the festival.

Kneecap, made up of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, have become one of the most talked-about acts in Irish music in recent years.

Known for blending Irish and English in their lyrics, the group combines satire, social commentary, and rap to create a unique sound that has earned them a following at home and abroad. They have already sold out tours in the UK and US and are now bringing their live show to Killarney.

Tickets go on general sale this Friday, September 5 at 10am via https://gleneaglearena.ie/gigs/kneecap/ FASSBENDER LINK TO KNEECAP FILM

Kneecap’s story was brought to the big

screen last year in the award-winning film Kneecap, which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

The movie, a comedy-drama, follows the band’s rise from West Belfast and their clashes with authority, blending fact with fiction.

The film also has a strong Killarney connection. Local actor Michael Fassbender plays Arlo Ó Cairealláin, the father of one of the band members. His role added star power to a cast that included the three band members playing themselves.

Kneecap went on to win audience awards at Sundance and the Galway Film Fleadh and was Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.

Mary Kissane O’Shea retires after 45 years at St Francis’ Special School

On Monday, September 1, Mary Kissane O’Shea marked her retirement by cycling from Kissane’s Shop in Beaufort to St Francis’ Special School, retracing the same journey she made on her very first day in 1980 at just 18 years of age.

Mary served as a Special Needs Assistant at the school for 45 years, dedicating her career to supporting generations of pupils.

To mark the occasion, a retirement function was held at The Dunloe Castle Hotel, where Principal Colin McGillycuddy made a special presentation on behalf of the staff and pupils.

Mary also turned her retirement into a fundraiser to support St Francis’ Special School, ensuring the students continue to benefit from a nurturing and supportive environment.

St Brigid’s seeks photos of past pupils in uniform

St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School is appealing to past pupils to share old photos of themselves in school uniform for a new project.

The school is compiling a collection of images spanning the last three decades, which will go on display in the assembly area for current students to view.

Teacher Stephanie Horan said the school would greatly appreciate support from past pupils. “We are putting together a display of the school uniform over the years, and we would love to in-

clude photos from as many former students as possible. It could be from last year or 30 years ago, all are welcome,” she said.

Photos can be emailed to shoran@sbk.ie or posted to Stephanie Horan, St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, New Street, Killarney.

The display will form part of a wider school project aimed at showing how the school’s identity has been represented through its uniform over the years.

MEP Ní Mhurchú calls for increased speed enforcement

Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú is calling for a stronger approach to speeding on rural roads, with a specific focus on the Killarney area.

The call comes as new figures show that Garda speed vans have collected significantly less revenue in Kerry compared to other counties, suggesting a lack of enforcement.

In the Killarney Garda District, fines from speed vans amounted to €78,560 in 2023, €77,600 in 2024, and just €17,120 in the first half of 2025. These figures indicate a downward trend in fines collected locally.

Nationally, over €32 million was collected in fines between January 2023 and early June 2025. However, in Kerry, the total collected was only €482,080 during the same period. By comparison, Tipperary saw fines of over €3.3 million. Ní Mhurchú, a member of the EU Transport Committee, is pushing for more speed vans to be deployed at accident black spots and on rural roads in Kerry to improve road safety.

OPINION: Speed vans are not about safety, they are about revenue

Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has expressed disappointment that speed vans in Kerry collected “only” €482,080 in fines over a 30-month period.

Her choice of words is telling. Instead of welcoming the fact that drivers in Kerry are, by her own figures, driving more safely than in other counties, she frames it as a problem because it does not generate enough money.

This proves what many have argued for years: speed vans are a cash cow. Ní Mhurchú’s comments read more like those of a business owner unhappy with sales figures than a public representative concerned with safety.

Road fatalities in Kerry have shown a decline since 2023. The county recorded 10 deaths on its roads in 2023, which fell to seven in 2024 and three so far in 2025 (up to July). The figures indicate a downward trend in road deaths, reflecting improved road safety in the county over the past two years.

The people of Kerry should be commended, not criticised. If lower fine numbers mean drivers are behaving responsibly, then the vans have served their purpose. Yet the MEP calls for even more vans at rural black spots, as if revenue rather than safety is the real measure of success.

The MEP highlighted that while Garda speed vans collected over €32 million in fines, the Gardaí paid out over €44 million to private operators during a similar period, indicating the system is operating at an overall loss. That’s a failed business model, not a successful road safety campaign.

The use of the word “only” is particularly distressing. Less than half a million euro collected in Kerry in two and a half years should be seen as proof that drivers here are more careful, not as a reason to flood the county with more cameras. Ní Mhurchú’s disappointment exposes the real function of speed vans is not saving lives, but generating income.

Kerry County Council urges motorists to be vigilant

As schools re-open after the summer break, and with thousands of students making their daily commute to and from schools on foot, on bike, by bus or other forms of transport, Kerry County Council is reminding the public about the basic rules of the road and the Safe Cross Code around school time. Parents and guardians should ensure their child is getting to and from school safely and with road safety in mind. This includes them being visible to other road users, looking for a safe place to cross, using controlled crossings properly and being vigilant on their route to school. Parents, guardians and students themselves all have a role to play in ensuring a safe route to school for everyone. Motorists are also being reminded of the hazards and risks around schools with large numbers of young children in the vicinity and traffic congestion.

Declan Keogh, Kerry County Council’s Road Safety Officer said near-miss incidents occur near schools because people are not paying full attention. “Drivers need to be more aware of their surroundings around schools. Be patient and allow people extra time and space to cross the road safely. Some parents think its safe to let their child out of the vehicle while in a line of traffic, and shockingly, children are being let out of vehicles onto the middle of the road. This is highly dangerous. If children are being dropped off near a school, always park the vehicle in a safe place and ensure the child exits the vehicle on the side closest to the footpath rather than onto the middle of the road. People who are not paying attention around schools are at risk of causing an actual incident or a near-miss.”

There are 15 School Warden Crossings throughout the county which are operated and managed by School Wardens who do a wonderful and very important

job every day to assist students across the road safety. A school warden is employed by the council, and they operate under Section 96 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, which empowers them to stop and hold traffic to allow children to cross the road safely. Drivers are required by law to stop and remain stopped if the stop sign is displayed. Failure by a driver to do so is an offence for which they can be prosecuted and receive penalty points and a fine.

The Road Safety Officer said, “The majority of motorists obey the direction of a School Warden, however there are some who don’t, which puts their lives and that of the warden and young children at great risk.” Mr. Keogh added:

“Motorists should be more aware of the crossing locations in their area and be ready to stop when signalled to do so, and students alike should also obey the instructions and wait for the ‘callout’ from the warden to cross when it is deemed safe to do so.”

As part of Kerry County Council’s road safety strategy, the Road Safety Officer will include visits to primary and secondary schools throughout the county during the school term to deliver road safety education programmes to school students.

‘Bounty’ for deer hunters

Farming representatives in Kerry are calling on the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to introduce a financial incentive for hunters to control the county’s growing deer population.

The request has been supported by Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill.

Deputy Cahill said the number of Red and Sika deer in Kerry has increased sharply in recent years, with animals now appearing in fields, gardens, and on roads across the county. He warned that deer pose a danger to public safety and can carry ticks that spread Lyme disease.

“Everybody is aware that the Red and Sika deer have moved far beyond the confines of Killarney National Park, roaming freely through Kerry, damaging crops and gardens and are a real threat to life and limb on our roads,” he said.

He added that previous efforts to cull herds have been unsuccessful. “Our

farming body representatives are among the stakeholders who should be consulted and all possible solutions considered to improve the situation,” Deputy Cahill said.

Similar bounty schemes have been used successfully in the past for foxes and seals. Deputy Cahill confirmed he has submitted a Parliamentary Question to Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon to introduce a bounty for deer.

“I believe it is important to incentivise hunters to control deer numbers and assist in preventing accidents and tragedies in County Kerry,” he said.

Praise for John Mulhern as he steps down from Airport CEO role

Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill has paid tribute to John Mulhern following his decision to step down after six years as CEO of Kerry Airport.

Deputy Cahill, the party’s Spokesperson on Tourism, said Mulhern’s work had made a lasting impact on the county.

“John Mulhern’s contribution to tourism in this county has been enormous during his six years as CEO of Kerry Airport, overseeing a major upgrade of facilities there,” Deputy Cahill said. “This project was the biggest single investment in the airport since it was officially opened as a regional airport by then Taoiseach Charles Haughey in 1989.”

He described Mulhern’s decision to leave the role as “a matter of mixed emotions,”

adding that while he was grateful for his achievements, he was disappointed to see him move on.

“John’s input will be long remembered by everyone who uses the routes in and out of Kerry, and by all those involved in tourism in the county, for his innovation and foresight,” Deputy Cahill added.

The TD wished him well for the future, saying: “On behalf of the people of Kerry, I want to wish John Mulhern every success in whatever ‘flight plan’ life takes him into.”

Local groups named as finalists in Kerry Community

Several Killarney organisations have been announced as finalists in the 2025 Kerry Community Awards.

Among the local groups shortlisted are the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU), Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, and Killarney Women’s Shed. They join a strong list of community and voluntary organisations from across the county who will attend the awards ceremony on September 18 at the Rose Hotel, Tralee.

An event spokesperson said the judging panel faced a tough task after receiving a record number of entries. “The calibre of applications was exceptionally high this year and we congratulate all of the groups who have been shortlisted. We also thank every organisation who entered and encourage them to apply again in future years.”

The Kerry Community Awards aims to recognise the work of voluntary and community groups across the county.

Seán Kelly withdraws from presidential race

Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly withdrew from the Fine Gael presidential selection process before nominations closed on Tuesday.

He confirmed the news in a statement on Monday afternoon.

The Kilcummin native had declared his interest in seeking the Fine Gael nomination two weeks ago, despite previously ruling himself out of the race in July.

Mr Kelly said while he is of the view that a contest would be “good and healthy”

for the party, he acknowledged that he is unlikely to gather the required 20 nominations from the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party to contest the election. He said he was “humbled” by the support for his candidacy at grassroots level, and expressed his gratitude to his supporters and colleagues for the support he has received in recent weeks. Mr Kelly will now return to Brussels to continue his work as MEP for Ireland South.

Ciar’s Quest expands to new Kerry locations

An idea first developed in Killarney is now being rolled out across the county, with the award-winning free Augmented Reality trail, Ciar’s Quest, expanding to two new locations in Kerry.

The original trail, created on Ross Island in Killarney National Park, has proven hugely popular with families.

Building on that success, Kerry County Council has now extended the experience to the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways, with new trails on the Tralee to Fenit Greenway and the Listowel to Limerick Greenway.

A year-round quest has also been launched from Ballyheigue Blue Flag Beach.

Developed by Cork-based Wanderly

and funded through the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Digital Innovation Programme, the interactive trails turn a walk or cycle into a family adventure.

Using the free app, visitors can follow a map, scan trail symbols, and unlock stories about Kerry’s wildlife and folklore.

Brian Looney, Head of Digital with Kerry County Council, said the expansion shows how low-impact technology can add to outdoor experiences. “Families can add a treasure hunt to their Greenway journey, and Kerry is one of the first places we know of where Greenways have this kind of Augmented Reality enhancement on top of the natural beauty,” he said.

The free app is available at www.ciarsquest.ie

KILLARNEY REGATTA FESTIVAL 2025

“It’s all about the Boat”

The launch of the Killarney Regatta Festival took place in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Tuesday night.

Killarney Regatta will host the 237th Killarney Regatta Festival on Sunday, September 14, at O’Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, on the shores of Lough Lein. This year marks the 70th anniversary of O’Mahony’s Point as the venue for the traditional regatta. Acclaimed accordion sensation Liam O’Connor will be LIVE at this year's Killarney Regatta, Liam was on hand to help launch the 237th annual Killarney

Today, there are five active clubs in the hinterland of Killarney, training from various boat houses along the shoreline. The older rowing clubs date back to the 1800’s, and were aligned to the estates and business people. The type of boat raced is unique to the Lakes of Killarney and known as ‘The Killarney Sixes’ –wooden in structure, wooden oar, fixed seat. The boats were originally designed and built by Salters in Oxford.

Kerry man to champion farm safety in new programme

A new initiative for farm safety has been launched by Irish Rural Link. It is called The Farm Safety Community Champion programme and focuses on combatting labour and isolation concerns on Irish farms.

The aim of the programme is to equip local communities with a representative to act as a champion for farmer safety and well-being. The programme consists of the training of nine regionally spread Farm Safety Community Champions from various backgrounds includ-

ing farming, teaching, and community mentoring. These champions will develop networks in their regions to connect farmers to their communities, delivering farm safety and well-being talks at local marts and community centres. Mark Riordan who is Chairperson of Kerry Macra is one of those representatives. He has a diverse professional background in the agricultural and food industries. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science and a Level 8 qualification from MTU Cork. In 2024, he was

crowned Macra Mr. Personality. To further boost this initiative and assist with growing workforce concerns, Irish Rural Link is calling on rural communities to organise a ‘Farmer’s Haggart’ as part of this programme. The Farmer’s Haggart is led by a local Farm Safety Community Champion, and will encourage farmers to assist one another in simple tasks on the farm. The goal of this is to foster local connections between farmers to further develop rural farming networks, and support community wellbeing.

Met Éireann records hottest summer this year

Met Éireann has revealed that this year’s summer was the warmest on record, surpassing the summer of 1995.

The average temperature was 16.19 °C, which is 1.94 °C above Ireland’s longterm average.

While it hasn’t been particularly sunny during summer, the data shows that the dry soils from a warm and sunny spring and periods of high-pressure dominance kept temperature consistently above average over the past three months. Paul Moore, Met Éireann Climatologist, warned that Ireland is experiencing the effects of climate change and projections show it is going to become warmer. He said: “2025 has already seen the warmest spring on record and now summer 2025 is another example of the warming trend, making it the first year since 1933 with consecutive Spring-Summer records.”

Summer temperatures are projected to surpass the 2025 mean summer temperature of 16.19 °C as the century progresses.

Final call to register for Big Beach Clean 2025 away Home

Kerry people are being encouraged to register as a volunteer for the Big Beach Clean 2025. So far, 150 volunteers in Kerry are registered.

The Big Beach Clean is taking place from September 19 – September 21. Supported by Kia Ireland, the Big Beach Clean is an annual call-to-action as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), a global initiative led by Ocean Conservancy to mark the end of the bathing season. This nationwide event invites individuals, families, and communities to come together, clean their local coastline or waterways, and contribute to a global citizen science effort. Those who register

before September 7 avail of free a cleanup kit. Last year, over 650 volunteers in Kerry took part in the 2024 Big Beach Clean and made a huge difference to their county removing approximately 4 tonnes of litter. Clean-ups will be happening in various locations across the county. A map of clean-ups happening in Kerry as part of the Big Beach Clean can be found on the Clean Coasts website. Upon signing up, participants receive all materials needed to run their beach clean and to record litter data using the Clean Coasts Marine Litter Data Cards or the Clean Swell App, which in turn helps contribute to global marine litter research.

Study finds sharp rise in AI use among young children

There has been a sharp rise in primary and secondary school children engaging with AI chatbots, according to new findings. CyberSafeKids annual report ‘A Life Behind The Screens’ revealed that more than a quarter of primary school children (26%) and over a third of secondary school children (36%) use AI to find information, to do their homework and as a social outlet.

Looking up information was the most popular use of AI (19% of 8–12-year-olds and 28% of 12–15-year-olds), however the report showed that 9% of primary school children and 7% of secondary school children used chatbots to produce their schoolwork. The findings also revealed that 8% of the younger age group

and 10% of the older age group use AI to chat and to get advice. It also showed that age verification, despite new regulation, is still highly ineffective with 71% of 8–12-year-olds using 13+ social media and instant messaging apps. The report highlights that popular digital environments were not designed with children in mind and they continue to fall short in protecting them. Alex Cooney, CEO of CyberSafe Kids, called for urgent action amid the struggle to effectively regulate social media. He said: “This requires strong, coordinated regulation at EU level. This includes effective age verification, and oversight of AI chatbots, instant messaging, and social gaming platforms. These measures must be backed by robust parental engagement and comprehensive digital education."

Sam Maguire Cup visits Corkery’s Bar

The Sam Maguire Cup made a special visit to Corkery’s Bar on Saturday.

The famous cup was brought by current Kerry captain Gavin White, and its arrival brought together the community to celebrate the county’s recent All-Ireland success.

Locals and visitors gathered to see the famous trophy up close.

The atmosphere was lively as the community celebrated Kerry football.

Among those in attendance were three men from Donegal, Jack McGarrigle,

Neil McGinley, and Colm Brogan, who also had an opportunity to see the cup.

The evening also saw a visit from Daniel Negus of London, who was in Kilcummin visiting his family.

His connection to Kerry football is strong, as his grandfather emigrated to London in the 1950s but passed on the love of the GAA to his family. For Daniel, supporting Kerry is a tradition that has been nurtured across the miles and kept alive through subscriptions to GAA Beo. Looking ahead, Corkery’s Bar is preparing to open a newly renovated upstairs dining area.

Two Rally Legends added to Rally Masters line-up

Killarney Rally Masters has confirmed two more high-profile additions for its event at Killarney Racecourse on Saturday, September 27.

Irish rally icon Andrew Nesbitt and Swedish star Kalle Grundel have been added to the list of competitors.

Nesbitt will drive his famous Mitsubishi Lancer WRC, the car he used to win the 2006 Donegal International Rally. The Killarney event will be the last chance for Irish fans to see the car before it heads to San Marino for Rally Legend the following weekend. Nesbitt is a two-time winner of the Rally of the Lakes.

In a remarkable story, Grundel will be reunited with a man involved in a frightening incident from the 1986 Circuit of Ireland Rally. Nearly 40 years ago, Grundel's Ford RS200 struck a young spectator who ran onto the road. The man, now grown, will meet Grundel for the first time at the Killarney event. An RS200 will also be part of the reunion.

The one-day showcase will feature 50

cars from the Group B, Group A, and early WRC eras. Other confirmed drivers include Billy Coleman and Patrick Snijers in BMW M3s, and World Rally Championship driver Josh McErlean in a Ford Focus WRC.

Organised by Killarney and District Motor Club, with support from Motorsport Ireland and Kingfisher Insurance the event will raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation and Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice.

Storm Éowyn becomes costliest weather event in Irish Insurance history

The insurance industry has confirmed that Storm Éowyn, which struck Ireland in January 2025, has resulted in claims exceeding €301 million, making it the most expensive storm-related insurance event in Irish history.

This surpasses the financial impact of Storm Darwin (2014) and the January 2010 freeze.

According to the latest data from Insurance Ireland, a total of 33,768 claims have been recorded, with 67% relating to household damage.

While business claims represented just 29% of the total volume, they account-

ed for a significant 55% of the overall cost.

The average business claim stood at €17,000, compared to €5,745 for household claims.

“Eight months on, substantial progress has been made in settling claims and assisting those impacted,” Insurance Ireland said.

“While the insurance industry is not without its critics, Storm Éowyn has highlighted the indispensable role it plays in safeguarding society. Without the financial protection provided by insurance, the burden of recovery would likely fall on the government and ultimately, the taxpayer.

Storm Éowyn may have been the costliest weather event this century but followed on from the 2009 flooding claims that cost the insurance industry €244 Million and the 2010 big freeze which cost €297 Million.

Reducing car insurance costs for students

As students prepare to start or return to college, parents are being advised on how to reduce car insurance costs for their children who may be commuting every day.

Geraldine Kelly is the Head of Personal Lines with Gallagher Ireland, and she is offering top tops to parents on how to save money ahead of the upcoming academic year.

• Adding to an existing policy: This can be more cost-effective than purchasing a separate policy. Ms Kelly says it’s important to check with your broker / insurer as additional premiums can vary depending on vehicle, age and licence type.

• Buying a second-hand car: Opt for a model with a smaller engine size as those are typically cheaper to insure. Double check the history and condition to avoid future unexpected repairs.

• Choose the Right Car: Smaller, less powerful cars are generally cheaper to insure.

• Consider a Telematics Policy: Many insurers offer telematics, which monitor driving behaviour through a box fitted to the vehicle or an app. Safe driving can lead to lower premiums over time.

• Increase the Excess: Opting for a higher voluntary excess can reduce premiums but ensure it’s an amount you can afford to pay in the event of a claim.

• Driver Training Courses: Completing an approved driver training course can demonstrate responsibility and may lead to discounts with some insurers.

• Shop Around: Don’t settle for the first quote. Consult with a broker to find the best deal tailored to your needs.”

She advised that naming parents as the main driver to reduce insurance cost can be considered insurance fraud, a practise known as ‘fronting’. Upon discovery of this, claims can be denied, and policies can be voided.

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

PROBATE – What is it?

We have all heard the term Probate and Probate sales but how many of us fully understand it?

Unfortunately, everyone will experience the loss of a parent or a family member in their lives and it is only then when ‘Probate’ becomes relevant to us.

In circumstance where there is a loss of a loved one, a person(s) will have been appointed as executor/executrix of that persons estate. This person(s) are responsible for administering the estate of the deceased in accordance with their wishes.

For many administering the estate of a deceased friend or family member can be a stressful and overwhelming undertaking. At DNG Ted Healy we can provide the professional advice and support gained from years of experience to help and guide you through this process.

PROBATE VALUATION

A Probate Valuation is a valuation required by the Probate Office as part of the process of proving the Will.

WHEN?

Where a deceased person owns a property then a Probate Valuation is required, regardless of whether the property is to be sold or not.

VALUATION DATE?

Irrespective of when the Probate Valuation occurs, the valuation date for Probate purposes is the date the deceased passed away.

WHEN DO BENEFICIARIES RECEIVE THEIR INHERITANCE?

Beneficiaries receive their inheritance once the Grant of Probate has issued, all assets are liquidated and collected by the Executors and all liabilities (Incl. inheritance Tax) discharged.

CAPITAL ACQUISITIONS

TAX (CAT)

CAT comprises inheritance tax. This tax is paid on inheritances received over a certain amount (Tax free thresholds).

The Probate valuation is the value of the property used to calculate whether inher-

itance tax is owed and the amount due.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX (CGT)

CGT is the tax paid on the increase in price from the date of acquiring the asset to the sale of the same asset. If inherited property is sold and the price has increased from the Probate Valuation, the beneficiary will be liable to pay CGT on the difference.

DNG PROBATE SERVICE:

The passing of a loved one is of course a traumatic and difficult time. Being appointed executor/executrix of the deceased persons estate can add to this. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Penalty Points for Driving Offences

Ireland uses penalty points to enforce road rules and improve road safety. If you commit a motoring offence, and the penalty includes penalty points, your driving licence will be endorsed with one or more penalty points. Some traffic offences have other penalties, such as fines and imprisonment. You will find the list of penalty points offences on the Road Safety Authority of Ireland website

While penalty points are endorsed on your driving licence, the points do not physically appear on the licence. Your penalty points are recorded on your driving licence record, which is held on the National Vehicle and Driver File operated by the Department of Transport.

If you have penalty points endorsements on your licence record, you must notify your insurance company when applying for motor insurance. Motor insurance companies have had access to the National Vehicle and Driver File. Endorsements on your licence record will often lead to an increase in your motor insurance premium.

How do penalty points work?

Penalty points are recorded on your driving licence when you are convicted in court of a driving offence that attracts penalty points, or you pay a fixed charge notice that was issued to you for an offence that also carries penalty points. If you get 12 penalty

points in any 3 years, you are automatically disqualified from driving for 6 months.

Learner permit drivers are disqualified if they have 7 penalty points. This lower threshold also applies for the first 2 years of a driver’s first full driving licence.

How long do penalty points stay on my licence?

Penalty points remain on your licence record for 3 years. Any period where your licence is out of date or you are serving a court disqualification does not count as part of the 3 years. If your driving licence is out of date, the points will only apply from whenever you renew your licence.

What happens to my licence if I have 12 penalty points or 7 where applicable?

If you have been disqualified from driving because you have reached 12 penalty points or 7 penalty points where applicable, you must surrender your driving licence within 14 days of disqualification commencing to the National Driver Licence Service for the period of 6 months. It is an offence not to surrender a licence. It is also an offence to drive while disqualified.

What would happen if someone else was driving my vehicle?

If the driving offence was detected by camera, the notice is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. If the

registered owner was not driving at the time of the offence, they should fill out the Statement of Nomination of Name and Address of Driver of Vehicle section giving details of the person who was driving. This should then be returned to the Fixed Charge Processing Office with the original notice. You must do this within 28 days of the date of the notice. Do not enclose payment. The Gardaí then issue a notice to the driver.

Do penalty points apply to all Irish driving licences?

Yes. Penalty points apply to both learner permits and full Irish driving licences. Penalty points also apply to drivers with foreign driving licences driving in Ireland. If someone is driving in Ireland on a foreign licence, a record will be created for penalty points. If the driver accumulates 12 penalty points in 3 years, they are disqualified from driving in Ireland.

How do you find out how many penalty points you have on your driving licence?

To find out how many penalty points you have on your driving licence record, complete the Driver’s Statement Form. Fill in the details as it appears on your licence. You select the option to receive it by email or post. There is no charge.

What happens if you have penalty points from other jurisdictions?

TO LET: 3-Bedroom House in Tralee. Contact 086 8136888.

Penalty points from other countries (including EU/EEA member states and the United Kingdom) are not recognised between states. Although a European Convention on driving disqualifications was signed by the member states in June 1998, it is not currently in force. However, the UK and Ireland have a separate agreement that allows each country to recognise disqualifications (but not penalty points) due to certain offences.

Can penalty points be cancelled?

If you have been issued with penalty points (or a fixed charge without penalty points), you can apply to the Gardaí for the points to be cancelled. You will have to show that there are good procedural or exceptional grounds for cancellation. You can get the Fixed Charge Notice Cancellation Request Form and guidance notes on filling out the form on www.garda.ie.

FINAL FOUR

Host of local sides on cusp of club finals

It’s far too soon to be dreaming of Croker but dreams of reigning supreme here in Kerry are inching closer to reality for the teams still standing in the various Kerry Club Football Championships.

The semi-finals of the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Premier competitions will all be staged over a tantalising weekend of action, with several East Kerry clubs vying for a place in the finals.

Defending Senior champions Dr Crokes have a had a week off to prepare for their semi, but so too have their opponents Kenmare Shamrocks. Kenmare are a team who have posed the Crokes serious problems in the past. Can they hurt them now when it really counts? After defeating Dingle last weekend,

surprise package Na Gaeil go up against Rathmore in the other semi-final. That will be an appetising fixture for Killarney folk to look forward as the game is being played at Dr Crokes’ grounds in Lewis Road.

In the Intermediate grade, local rivals Fossa and Kilcummin will do battle in Tralee, their last four clash forming part of a double header with Crokes v Kenmare. Legion impressed in their quarter-final win over Glenflesk and An Ghaeltacht will provide another stern challenge.

All in all there is plenty of football to keep us entertained. Here’s hoping for strong attendances all around as we get stuck into the business end of these highly competitive and much-loved tournaments.

KERRY SENIOR CLUB SEMI-FINAL

Rathmore v Na Gaeil

• Saturday 5.30pm Lewis Road

First up on a busy weekend for Kerry GAA clubs is a novel pairing.

Na Gaeil have been the form team so far with the full complement of county calibre players available with no injury problems. That means that Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry will resume their Kerry midfield pairing of the past. Barry took a year out travelling, and O’Connor was so unfortunate with a recurring shoulder injury, which sidelined him for much of 2025.

Last weekend the latter was the top scorer with 1-2 for Na Gaeil against the fancied Dingle, who were themselves weakened by injuries to several players. Dingle were heavily dependent on Paul Geaney, who amazingly kicked six two-pointers. Imagine that: 12 points from the veteran Kerry and Dingle forward. Conditions were difficult with a gale force breeze, but he is well used to kicking points in Páirc an Ághasaigh where the prevailing conditions are difficult every day,

Na Gaeil have outstripped Stacks in Tralee at present, with Kerins O’Rahilly’s and John Mitchels well down the pecking order at senior levels. Na Gaeil led 1-10 to 0-2 at the interval against Dingle, a whopping 11 points clear, but when Dingle came at them, especially with Geaney in such scoring form, they just held on for that all-important onepoint win. Dara Devine also did well, scoring four points.

Barry and O’Connor will not have it all their own way this weekend as Rathmore’s Andrew Moynihan and Cathal Ryan have been in sparkling form. Rathmore have also got a head of steam up on their way to the semi-final having knocked out the fancied Stacks. The Tralee side were coasting with Paddy Lane and Cian Purcell doing most of the damage, combining to score 1-11. However, Rathmore took over in the final 10 minutes, scoring 1-4 while Stacks could only manage a single point. Kerry players Shane Ryan and Paul Murphy, the latter operating at number 11, drove home the advantage to win 2-12 to 1-13. In the early pool rounds they deserved a draw at least against Dr Crokes, only to be caught by a late Alex Hennigan goal. That display away to Crokes augurs well for a return to the same venue tomorrow.

Shane Ryan is a key player for Rathmore. Not only does he fulfil his primary duties as a goalkeeper and shot stopper, but his kickouts are also well placed, especially when he has to go long. He will be mindful of the fielding of O’Connor and Barry but can be confident that Moynihan and Ryan will contest with the best. Also, so much of broken play around

the middle is a feature of the new rules, so Cian O’Connor and the two Dineens, Alan and Cian, will be on high alert. Veteran Paul Murphy is very well suited to snap up that ball that breaks forward. In the game versus Crokes, Rathmore played a very direct attack through the middle, which was very effective, especially when they faced a strong second-half wind. Inside, the ageless John Moynihan is a very clever forward, a reliable scorer, and so often pounces on a mistake to slot a goal. Team captain Brian Friel is a reliable free taker.

Na Gaeil will start as favourites, but I give Rathmore a great chance to book their place in the final just one week later. It may take extra time, and hopefully the hooter will be in action.

VERDICT: Na Gaeil.

KERRY SENIOR CLUB SEMI-FINAL

Kenmare Shamrocks v Dr Crokes

• Sunday 3.30pm

Austin Stack Park

Both teams advanced directly to the semi-finals, giving them a free Sunday to prepare for this eagerly awaited clash.

Kenmare have been there or thereabouts for the last five years but have failed to win a senior Kerry title. They were extremely fortunate to qualify

for the semis. Milltown/Castlemaine looked to have enough done to win, but veteran Stephen O’Brien, the retired Kerry forward, scored an amazing two-pointer nine minutes into injury time to draw the game at 3-17 each. It was enough to see them through a feisty game as Kenmare ended the game with 13 men, and Milltown Castlemaine finished with 14. Kenmare were worse hit, losing David Hallissey for a red card offence midway through the first half. Still, they battled on, although it looked like a mountain to climb.

With 15 minutes to go, a Milltown/Castlemaine corner back was red-carded. Just coming up to full-time, Kenmare’s goalkeeper Kevin Fitzgibbon got the line after conceding a late penalty. James McCarthy went into goal, and would you believe it, the penalty shot hit the post.

Former East Kerry and Kerry panellist Donal O’Sullivan Down transferred from Kilgarvan this season, giving Kenmare added scoring power. He scored 1-3 in this game. The key man, of course, is Seán O’Shea, and his duel with Kerry colleague Gavin White will be crucial to the outcome of this game.

O’Shea had a quiet game last time out, scoring just four points (two 45s, one free). That was unusual. Kenmare had other scorers in Stephen O’Brien 1-5,

Donal O’Sullivan 1-3 and Kevin O Sullivan 1-2.

The Shamrocks supporters will be looking to O’Shea to land those two pointers that mean so much in today’s game.

Defending champions Dr Crokes, who won the double in 2024, will return to the Tralee venue where they have had so many winning finals.

They will have a strong nucleus of All-Ireland winning Kerry players, although they were somewhat subdued in the Rathmore game. The celebrations are well over now and they have had a full complement of players in training for Sunday.

Tenacious defender Maidhcí Lynch is still out injured since the Spa game. Apart from the O’Shea/White duel, Crokes will look to Mark O’Shea to repeat his midfield performances with Kerry, probably partnered by David Shaw. Veterans Brian Looney and Fionn Fitzgerald are still playing great football, while Evan Looney has grown in stature since that memorable solo goal in last year’s county final. Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan are the reliable score getters.

Crokes need to step up on recent form, but they have the players to win if Seán O’Shea is kept to five or six points.

VERDICT: Dr Crokes.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB SEMI-FINAL

Kilcummin v Fossa

• Sunday 1.30pm

Austin Stack Park

A big attendance is expected for this double bill in Tralee, especially with so many of the victorious Kerry All-Ireland winning team in action.

These two teams met a few weeks ago in the pool stage and Kilcummin had a runaway 12-point win, with former Kerry FC player Matt Keane scoring seven points. The final score was unusual, 0-22 to 0-10, and no goals even from David Clifford. Paudie did not start but came on early in the second half.

Kilcummin are going great guns and came through a searching test against Listowel Emmets in last weekend’s quarter-final. On form, they will be expected to make it to the final and winning that would open the way through Munster and then to Croker. No doubt there will be memories of that great day in Croke Park in 2019 when they blew Naomh Éanna from Antrim aside on the scoreline of 5-13 to 2-9 to be crowned All-Ireland Intermediate Club champions. It was a great day for Kilcummin, and most memorable of all was the Kevin McCarthy display. He scored 3-7, just enough to outscore the entire Naomh Éanna team. That solo scoring record still stands for a brilliant scoring forward, brother of the great Kerry defender, the quiet but very effective Mike McCarthy.

No Kevin Mac on Sunday, but Kilcummin have a solid unit starting from former Kerry goalkeeper Brendan Kealy, who is still playing brilliantly. Paul O’Shea and Kevin Gorman are strong at midfield, and Philip O’Leary at wing forward – scorer of four points against Fossa – links well with Cian Foley, while former Kerry underage defender Darragh O’Callaghan will anchor the defence.

Fossa responded well to that drubbing to snatch victory over Beaufort on Sunday last, a game Beaufort should have won. Led by Kerry All-Ireland winners Seán O’Brien and Mike Breen, they were in cruise control. Conditions were very difficult with strong winds and heavy showers.

The overreliance of Fossa on the Clifford brothers was apparent. They scored everything for Fossa apart from two points, and there was no sign of a comeback until the dying moments when the telepathic brothers put Beaufort to the sword. David needed all of his guile, class, and strength to link up with his older brother, who manufactured an amazing goal.

Shortly before that O’Sullivan, the Fossa keeper, made a marvellous save. Beaufort should have been out the gap. It was a cruel blow to lose that key game in front of their home crowd.

I don’t expect a runaway repeat victory for Kilcummin, but even with the Clifford

brothers backed up by Emmett O’Shea, Kilcummin will win unless they fall into the trap of overconfidence.

VERDICT: Kilcummin.

INTERMEDIATE CLUB SEMI-FINAL Legion v An Ghaeltacht

• Sunday 4pm Milltown Legion have progressed very steadily through the pool games and will set their sights on winning the Kerry Intermediate title. They excelled on home turf last weekend, proving far too good for a disappointing Glenflesk side.

Legion were on form, from former Kerry goalkeeper Brian Kelly right through to corner forward Ryan O’Grady, who scored eight points in their 1–21 to 0–14 win over Glenflesk. They led by 11 points to 6 at half-time, and a great goal by Kerry panellist Darragh Lyne in the second half put the game out of reach for Glenflesk.

Eoghan O’Sullivan is well able to move upfield from wing back to score, while former Kerry player Jonathan Lyne can do likewise from his customary half back position. With Finbarr Murphy in attack and veteran James O’Donoghue ready to spring from the bench, Legion will fancy their chances to book a place in the final.

An Ghaeltacht made very hard work of defeating a spirited Gneeveguilla outfit at Gallarus on Sunday last. There is always a wind factor in the Muiríoch area, but on Sunday last there were sheets of rain and a hurricane wind.

A seven-point lead at halftime did not seem sufficient for Gneeveguilla, and it didn’t with the locals, led by Brian Ó Béaglaoich, their Kerry senior, able to clear that deficit only for Gneeveguilla to make it a nail-biting finish when they scored a late goal.

Gone are the halcyon days of An Ghaeltacht, providing the O’Shea dynasty of Dara, Tomás, Marc and uncle Páidí, along with Aodán Mac Gearailt and Dara Ó Cinnéide.

A repeat of last week’s display will see Legion through to the final. VERDICT: Legion.

JUNIOR PREMIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

In their Junior Premier quarter-final, Listry had to battle all the way before getting past Ardfert in extra time. They will need a big step up in form to hold off Ballymac in the semi-final. The match will take place in Castleisland on Sunday at 1pm.

St Senan’s will take on Keel in the other semi-final. Throw-in at Connolly Park on Saturday at 5pm.

St Paul’s welcome new guys to town

New St Paul’s signings Steve Kelly and Samuel Grant arrived in Killarney this week in plenty of time for the start of the new season which commences on the first weekend in October.

American point guard Kelly comes to Ireland off the back of a stellar final season at Edinboro College in Pennsylvania. He finished the season with 385 points, leading to a game average of 13.7 and also contributed four assists per game. These stats demonstrate his ability to both create and convert scoring opportunities. A proficient defender, his relentless ball pressure makes opposing players uncomfortable and his ability to force turnovers means he can dictate the pace on both ends of the floor.

Prior to Edinboro he played for Clarion University. He is a native of Whitman, Massachusetts.

Standing at 6ft 9 inches, Grant will bring his considerable height to the St Paul’s line-up. He comes with a strong reputation having represented England at U15 level and Great Britain at U16 , U18 and U20 level.

While you might think his size would

make him primarily an inside player, he actually has an impressive outside shot, something which helps him to regularly contribute 20-plus points in games. He attended the University of Sioux Falls the last two college seasons and before that he played for the Florida Institute of Technology. Hailing from the English town of Wellingborough, he majored in accounting and interestingly worked under highly rated Kerry native Alan Keane at the Reading Rockets.

The club also welcomed Pablo Murcia to town recently. Pablo will combine a playing role with the National League team with a coaching coordinator role in the juvenile section of the club. He has coached underage in his native Valencia in Spain and brings with him strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.

St Paul’s will now compete under the banner of Utility Trust St Paul’s Killarney after reaching agreement with the company, who are also the lead sponsor the women's Super League team.

Long term sponsors Scotts Hotel will remain on as an associate sponsor, continuing their decades-long connection with the club.

Coach Kelly ‘honoured’ to work with Irish team

Ahern has returned home after proudly representing her country with the Ireland girls’ U16 team at the European Championships in Istanbul.

Ireland rounded off a challenging but valuable campaign with a strong win over North Macedonia last week, giving the young squad vital international experience at the top level.

Now back on home soil, Ahern turns her attention to the Basketball Ireland South West Academy, where she has been appointed as Head Coach.

The Academy’s first step in the new season will see the first U14 Girls’ Talent Identification session this coming Sunday, September 7 at the Kerry Sports Academy, MTU Tralee, with some of the region’s brightest young talents set to compete for a place.

Alongside her academy duties, Ahern continues to play a central role in the development of basketball in Kerry. Following a busy summer development

programme with Kingdom Basketball, attention now turns to preparing for a busy season ahead as coach with St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, MTU Kerry Women’s team and the Killarney Cougars Juveniles, where she has been instrumental in fostering growth and competitiveness in the game throughout the county.

“It was a huge honour to work again with the Irish U16 squad in Istanbul and to represent the country on the international stage,” Ahern said. “The experience will stand to the players, and I’m excited to now bring that same energy and learning into my work here in Kerry with the Basketball Ireland South West Academy, Post Primary schools, and MTU Kerry.”

The Basketball Ireland South West Academy continues to open new pathways for aspiring young players under Coach Kelly's guidance. Full details on the upcoming U14 Talent Identification sessions are available on the Basketball Ireland website, ireland.basketball.

Ireland to take first step towards American dream

Irish soccer supporters are dreaming big as the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup gets underway this weekend with a home match against Hungary.

Ireland have been drawn in Group F alongside Portugal, Armenia and the Hungarians, with Saturday’s opponents at the Aviva seen as our main rivals for second place and a run at the playoffs. Portugal, who are ranked sixth in the world, are strong favourites to finish first and advance directly to the finals.

The 2026 World Cup will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico and for the Irish the prospect playing in the States is bound to conjure fond memories of the last American World Cup in 1994. A brilliant Irish team that boasted world class players like Paul McGrath and Roy Keane defeated eventual runners-up Italy en route to last 16 where they lost to the Netherlands. The current Irish crop is not quite as star-studded but fans will be encour-

aged by the form of main striker Evan Ferguson who has impressed in his first few matches for Serie A giants Roma. Highly rated goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher is now enjoying first team football having transferred from Liverpool to fellow Premier League outfit Brentford, and Ireland manager Heimir Halgrimsson has plenty of solid defensive options to choose from, most notably Kelleher’s clubmate Nathan Collins.

Midfield continues to be an area of concern with Josh Cullen of Burnley carrying a heavy load.

Hungary are ranked 38th in the world. They have reached the last three European Championships but have failed to qualify for a World Cup since 1986. Their star player is midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored a spectacular free kick for Liverpool in their 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

Ireland v Hungary kicks off at 7.45pm on Saturday. The FAI have confirmed that the match is a sellout.

Excitement builds ahead of big week for Kerry FC

Kerry FC will be hoping to build on their solid recent form when they play host to Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park this evening (Friday). Kick-off in Tralee is at 7.45pm.

Colin Healy’s side are unbeaten in their last three matches, a short but impressive run which has seen them defeat Cobh in the third round of the FAI Cup and Longford Town in the league, before drawing 3-3 away from home with First Division leaders Dundalk. Ronan Teahan gave Kerry the lead at Oriel Park last Friday night with former Irish international Daryl Horgan equalising from the spot in the 41st minute.

The visitors responded by retaking the lead within a minute – Robbie Cleary finding the target – but they were pegged back again just two minutes into the sec-

ond half when Horgan bagged his second goal.

Remarkably, the Kingdom bounced back straight away once again as Teahan made it 2-3 in the 48th minute, but Keith Ward levelled matters four minutes later. Neither side was able to secure the crucial seventh goal and they had to make do with a point apiece. It was a fine result for Kerry all the same, coming as it did against a Premier Division calibre side who are currently six points clear at the top of the table.

Tonight’s opponents, Cobh Ramblers, are second with Kerry now in eighth, but the league’s newcomers have already proven that they are capable of turning their Cork neighbours over. Another hard-earned win would be the perfect way to prepare for next week’s massive FAI Cup quarter-final tie at home to Sligo Rovers.

Irish international Enya Maguire signs for St Paul’s

Utility Trust St Paul’s have confirmed the signing of Irish international Enya Maguire ahead of the 20205/26 Super League season.

Enya comes to Killarney with bags of experience following a successful college career in the USA. She has represented her country at every grade from U16 up and she is currently a member of James Weldon’s Ireland women’s team.

Her time in the States began in the Hun School of Princeton, New Jersey, and she then progressed at Houston Christian University. She actually managed to team up with her sister Anna at HCU, a unique achievement for a great sporting family. Despite a Covid 19 interrupted time there she managed to establish herself as a mainstay in her final season, averaging 8 points per game and hitting a season-high 20 points, including five three-pointers, against Sam Houston.

NEW SIGNING: Enya Maguire is Killarney-bound ahead of the new Super League season.

Enya spent the 2024/25 season at the New Jersey Institute where again she showed her quality.

She will arrive in Killarney soon, before the commencement of the Super League season on the first weekend in October.

Killarney Athletic

U16 DIVISION 2: Killarney Athletic B 0-1 Mastergeeha. An excellent performance by our young Blues this morning was unfortunately decided by a scrappy Geeha goal after 15 minutes. In truth Athletic dominated the game and will be left wondering how they lost this one, but goals win games, and the Blues couldn't convert their chances on the day missing a great opportunity at the death to take a point. The game was summed up by a super Athletic team move finishing with striker Malachy Audley flashing a bicycle kick just the wrong side of the post. Despite the result many positives to be taken from the game for Athletic with good performances from Daniel Fennelly, Jacub Syjud and man of the match centre half Adam Doyle.

U14 BOYS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic

A 6-1 Inter Kenmare A (Sean Quill x 4, Ryan O’Donoghue x 1). The boys started their season today away to Kenmare A team. The lads started strong playing good possession football and Sean Quill coolly slotted home in the opening minutes to calm the nerves. The boys fought hard in the first half and played some nice football to get another lovely finish from Sean Quill to go up 2-0 at half. They went up 3-0 early in the second half with another brilliant finish from Sean Quill. They gave up a goal to make it a bit nervy at 3-1 but rallied together to finish the game with a comfortable 6-1 win, including a nice finish from Ryan O’Donoghue. Our new debutants Rory Tarrant and Alan O’Donoghue started the game and slotted right into the team and played very well to significantly contribute to the hard fought 6-1 victory. Thank you to the Kenmare coaches and team for a very sporting game. Man of the match was Sean Quill with 4 goals showing his immense leadership qualities for our lads. Great start to the season boys!

U14 DIVISION 3: Killarney Athletic U14 C 6-0 Iveragh B (Luke O’Sullivan x 3, Jacob Slowakiewiz x 2, William Sjogren x 1). The under 14C team welcomed Iveragh to Ferndale on the opening weekend of the season. From the very start the boys took control of the game and played some lovely football blowing off the cobwebs from the summer break. The boys scored after about 10 mins in and from that point the game was never in doubt. They would go on to score six by full time with Luke of Sullivan’s bagging a hat trick and taking the match ball home. Great performance from the boys today they really got down to business fast. We would like to thank Iveragh for a sporting game and the referee for a great performance.

U15 GIRLS PREMIER: MEK 4-0 Killarney Athletic. Our U15A girls started their league campaign against MEK this evening. Unfortunately the night was that theirs and we lost 4-0. On the positive we held them to 0-0 in the second

half with some solid performances and some new positions for players! Thanks to MEK for a sporting game and to the ref for a very fair game. We look forward Killorglin in the next round.

U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic A 5-2 St Brendan's Park A (Cillian Scannell 2, Conor Doherty, Jace Flynn, Josh O'Donoghue). Celtic came from behind to claim all 3 points in their league opener. U14 DIV 1: Killarney Celtic C 2-1 LB Rovers (Jake Scannell, Sam Fleury). In tough conditions Celtic C overcame a strong LB Rovers outfit. Celtic led through Jake Scannell before LB equalised to leave it 1-1 at the break. Celtic grabbed the winner through Sam Fleury to secure the points.

Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR: Our Senior Men advanced to the semi-final of the Intermediate Club Championship after an impressive 1-21 to 0-14 win over Glenflesk at a blustery Direen on Saturday afternoon. The reward is a Sunday afternoon date with

An Ghaeltacht this Sunday, September 7th at 4pm in Milltown. A comprehensive win didn't look likely in the opening quarter as both sides traded points with Eoghan O’Sullivan and Ryan O’Grady particularly impressive. But a strong second quarter in which the defence held Glenflesk to a single point saw the game open out to five-point advantage. Cousins Peter McCarthy and Finbarr Murphy joined Ryan on the scoresheet, and the teams hit the dressing rooms with the scoreboard reading 0-11 to 0-6. Glenflesk opened the second half very strong, cutting the gap to the minimum, but a cracking goal from Darragh Lyne put a bit of daylight between the sides again. An immediate two pointer from Ryan O’Grady was another nail in the Glenflesk coffin and truth be today they never really threatened again. James O’Donoghue climbed off the bench to produce an impressive cameo and Ryan O’Grady was gan dabht Man of the Match. Team: Brian Kelly, Darragh Fleming, Darragh Doherty, Conor Gammell, Eoghan O'Sullivan (0-4), Danny Sheahan, Jonathan Lyne, Denis Sheahan, Cian Gammell (0-1), Darragh Lyne (1-01), Peter McCarthy (0-2), Jamie Alade, Finbarr Murphy (0-2), David O’Sullivan, Ryan O'Grady (0-8). SENIOR LADIES: The Senior Ladies have a vital game in the Bon Secours Junior A Club Championship when they ISG this coming weekend. A win is imperative to advance to the next stage. Fixture details will be confirmed in due course.

U12 BOYS: The latest phase of Under 12 Go Games in East Kerry was a home game against Kenmare Shamrocks on Wednesday evening. They came well prepared with two excellent teams that really put it up to our teams from the off. Our lads gained composure and finished both games strong for the half-time whistle. The second half was another dingdong battle with Legion just shading it in the end. Thanks very much to John Keane and James Murphy for refereeing and doing an excellent job. Thank you very much to Kenmare for travelling over and playing too very sporting games.

U16 LADIES: There was no joy for our U16 girls on Thursday evening in Tralee as they narrowly lost out to Listowel in a very low scoring Division 2 County League Final. Congrats to the Listowel girls, and thanks to the referee for officiating. Final Score Killarney Legion 1-4 Listowel Emmets 2-4.

Kilcummin GAA

SENIORS: It took a late Shane McSweeney point in injury time to split the difference in what turned out to be a nail biting ending as Kilcummin secured their place in the last 4 of the Intermediate Club Championship as James Foley’s men saw off the challenge of Listowel 1-14 to 0-16 last Saturday evening. It was an ending that seemed far removed from the opening quarter in which Kilcummin at one stage led 1-7 to 0-1. A brace of two pointers from Philip O’Leary and Cian Foley ahead of the game only goal on the 8th minute when Kevin Gorman’s pass gave Mark O’Shea the time to shoot set up the perfect start. Listowel opened their account on the 15th minute and despite the home side hitting the next 3 points including a two pointer from Paul O’Shea it was the North Kerry men that began to reel in the lead outscoring Kilcummin 0-6 to 0-2 at the alter end of the half to leave the score 1-8 to 0-7 at half time. In a nip and tuck second half Listowel finally got ahead on the 50th minute and moved two points clear with 7 minutes left on the clock. It would need a big effort to get back into the contest and two crucial Paul O’Shea catches at midfield ignited the response with scores from Matt Keane from play and a free before the drama unfolded with Todd collecting a ball taking a tackle and tapping over with his left leg as he has done many time before in his 23 years senior career which certainly isn’t over just yet with an Intermediate club semi-final to look forward to.

UNDER 14 BOYS: Hard luck to our Under 14B team that were defeated in the East Kerry Division 4 final to Firies on Friday evening. Having battled hard throughout Firies took control late on.

UNDER 16 LADIES: Congratulations to the under 16 team who captured the Division 3 county final defeating Glenflesk 6-8 to 5-7. Some fine scores from Ellie O’Sullivan, Rhea Kate and Rebecca O’Connell put Kilcummin into an early lead but it was Glenflesk that got on top towards halftime to take a 1-point lead into the break. A spirited second half by Kilcummin which included 2 goals by Ellie O’Sullivan saw Kilcummin retake the lead and led by captain Hannah Kelliher the girls shut out Glenflesk despite the concession of a late goal.

UNDER 15 LADIES: It was great to see Melissa O’Connor, Rebecca O’Connell and Ella Kate Pigott represent Kerry in the Under 15 Munster PDP Blitz which took place in Mallow on Saturday. Well done girls.

Glenflesk GAA

INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Championship Quarter Final. Killarney Legion 1-21 Glenflesk 0-14. A convincing victory for Killarney Legion, with Darragh Lyne's early second half goal ending Glenflesk’s hopes of a comeback. It had started so positively for Glenflesk, with Darragh Roche opening the scoring in the first minute. He had a chance to double the lead from the following kick out, but saw his shot drop short. Legion's first score came from wing back Eoghan O'Sullivan who finished up with 4 points on the day and was a constant menace to the Glenflesk defence. Glenflesk’s main scoring threat was Dylan Roche, who finished with an individual total of 6 point's, with his first set up by Tommy Bowler. Legion though, were dominating at midfield, and this helped them to a run of 5 points without reply, Ryan O’Grady getting 3 of them. They almost got a goal just before the break, with only a superb save from Mark Kelliher denying Lyne. Legion were well worthy of their 5-point lead, and Glenflesk needed to perform far better to get back in the game. With substitute Jeff O’Donoghue making an immediate impact, points from Luke Crowley, Dylan Roche and a 2-point free from goalie Kelliher brought the deficit back to 2. Legion though, responded well. Firstly, Lyne drove at the Glenflesk defence and rasped a vicious shot to the net. From the kickout, a Ryan O’Grady 2 pointer pushed them further ahead. Despite the best efforts of Roche, who added 2 more brilliant points, Legion were well on top now, with James O'Donoghue sealing the win with a couple of classy efforts. The home side now head to the semi-finals, in a strong position. With players like O’Grady, Lyne and O’Sullivan in top form, they will fancy their chances from here. For Glenflesk, a third quarter final loss in a row will be hard to take. Unlike last year, they were well beaten, and clearing this hurdle remains elusive. With the competitive nature of the Intermediate Championship, there are no guarantees of ultimate victory. 1. Mark Kelliher (0-2), 17. Brian O’Connor, 3. Gea-

roid O’Leary, 4. Cian Lynch, 5. Emmett Finnan, 6. Daniel O’Brien, 7. Michael Mullane, 8. Jamie Moynihan, 9. Killian O’Sullivan (0-1), 20. John Kelleher. 11. Luke Crowley (0-3), 12. Tommy Bowler, 13. Ian Roche (0-1), 14. Darragh Roche (01),15. Dylan Roche (0-6), 19. Cian Horan, 26. Jeff O’Donoghue, 10. Callum Cronin. PREDICTOR CHALLENGE: A massive well done to Hanna Healy from Killarney Legion, who emerged as the overall winner of the Glenflesk Club Championship Prediction Challenge, topping the leaderboard with an impressive 54 points. Hanna takes home the €300 prize fund after a tightly contested competition that went right down to the final weekend of Group games. All entrants were included in our Lucky Dip Draw, and we’re delighted to announce the following winners: €100 Kerry Petroleum Voucher: Christina O’Riordan (Gneeveguilla), €50 Cash Prizes: Adrian Cronin (Fossa), Matthew Neville (c/o The Kerry Way Steakhouse & Bar), Aoise O'Donoghue (Glenflesk), Nora Kelleher (Glenflesk) & Bridget Leen (Ballymacelligott).
