Killarney Coffee Cup Projectbusinesses turn waste into change

The coffee shops and hotels of Killarney continue their collective effort to eradicate single use coffee cups.

Over 50 businesses handed over their disposable coffee cups, having moved to a reusable system on July 31. The single use coffee cups were collected and placed in a box in the town centre.

The box can hold 23,000 cups, which is the number of single use cups previously used in Killarney on a weekly basis. The unused single use coffee cups are to be used as part of a future educational piece that includes local art, biodiversity and science projects.

Since becoming Ireland’s first town to become single use coffee cup free, the local businesses have seen a very positive reaction from both locals as well as domestic and international tourists. Local customers are largely bringing their own reusable cup while tourists are utilising the collective €2 2GoCup deposit scheme.

Killian Treacy, owner of LUNA deli + wine, and spokesperson for the Killarney Coffee Cup Project, said: “ We are delighted with how the move has been received by customers. We knew that people were supportive of the decision

and understood why we were doing it, but it is encouraging to see how quickly our customers have adapted.

"It is really positive to walk through the town and the National Park and to see the number of people with a reusable cup in their hands. Some of the

strongest feedback we have received has been from the waste management workers due to the reduction of coffee cup litter on the streets as well as in the public bins in the town. We are really enthused by the differences we have seen in such a short

space of time.”

The project has been supported by local partners including the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Killarney Credit Union, Kerry County Council, 2GoCup, WanderWild Festival, Kerry Convention Bureau, and AIB.

Night walk in National Park

A nocturnal nature ramble took place in Knockreer Estate this week as part of National Heritage Week.

Led by Education Centre Staff of Killarney National Park and Conservation

Rangers, participants experienced the park and its inhabitants after dark. A highlight was the appearance of Daubenton Bats and a bank vole also showed up, much to the delight of the walkers.

Julia Mary Lucey’s 40 years of service to National Park

A Gneeveguilla woman was given a unprecedented honour when four white-tailed eagle chicks were released into Killarney National Park.

Last week, 24 White-tailed eagle chicks were released in locations around Lough Derg, the Shannon Estuary and the west of Ireland, as part of a long term reintroduction programme managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Services.

Four of them were released in Killarney National Park and one of those four has been named Julia after one of the park’s longest serving staff members.

Following on from the success of ‘Baxter’s Boys’ Paddy, - a well-known figure in Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic FC circles – has penned a second novel called ‘When Your Number’s Up’.

The dark comedy – said to be a cross between ‘Misery’ and ‘Waking Ned’ - is set in a Dublin newsagents.

It tells the story of man who believes money can buy anything including love.

He steals a lotto machine and the complications of such a move unfold across the pages.

His ten-minute plays include what he described as the Irish version of ‘The Hangover’ which tells the story of two Irish men waking up one morning in possession of the Sam Maguire Cup and having no idea how they ended up with it.

The stunning backdrop of Killarney Brewery in Fossa was the venue for the launch his latest book.

At Wednesday night’s launch Paddy revealed that the film rights for ‘Baxter’s Boys’ have been optioned by a film production company.

‘When Your Number’s Up’ is available in Killarney from both Eason and O’Connor’s Newsagents.

End in sight for Firefighters strike

The Killarney Advertiser understands that a solution is on the table to end the long-running firefighters strike.

Retained firefighters work part-time and are compensated with a retainment fee each year.

The Labour Court made a number of recommendations - including that the fee be increased by between 24% and 32.7%.

Trade union members found the recommendations unacceptable and, last week, retained firefighters returned to picket lines across the country

Killarney Fire Station was closed every second day this week meaning any

emergency had to be dealt with by the nearest operational station.

Trade Union SIPTU said retained firefighters are striking to ensure that the Government's report on the future of the service will be implemented.

As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press on Thursday evening, it was understood that the strike, which has been running since mid-June, could be close to ending.

Late night talks on Wednesday led to another pay and conditions offer, with members set to ballot on that proposal on Thursday.

The result of the ballot will be known on Friday and could spell the end of the long-running dispute.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that the fire fighters strike could be drawing to a close.

“I have again raised this matter with the Government and the HSE to try and ensure that St Mary the Angels will be not allowed to close but I have again being told no that the policy is that all people living in congregated settings will be moved to dispersed housing in ordinary communities and will have the same entitlement as any other citizen.

“I believe that in time all politicians will wake up to this fact and realise that this was an error but it will be too late at that stage. Continuous Minister’s for Health have failed to fully appreciate the appreciation of families for the services of St Mary the Angels. Does a future NFL kicker walk among us?

The path from Kerry to the NFL is not well worn but this week Tadhg Leader is hoping to unearth a local ‘Kicking King’ who has the potential to make it big in American football.

Leader, a former Connacht and USA rugby player, is the man behind Ireland’s Kicking King, a nationwide search to find future American football kickers. Players from all codes including GAA, soccer and rugby are encouraged to enter the contest and see if they have what it takes.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Leader said that while it’s extremely difficult to make it all the

way to the NFL, Irish sportspeople have the natural kicking talent to at least give it a go.

“You don’t know unless you try. Just show up. If you can kick a 45 in Gaelic, you’ll probably be pretty handy at this too. And you never know where it might take you.”

The Galway native founded Leader Kicking in 2022 to create a pathway for potential Irish punters and kickers. Under Leader’s guidance, former underage GAA stars Ronan Patterson (Cavan) and Ross Bolger (Laois) have already secured Division 1 scholarships in top US colleges.

Separately, Castleisland man David Shanahan, a former Kerry underage footballer, managed to secure a scholarship at Georgia Tech, where he plays as a punter.

CROSSOVER

There is an obvious crossover between the kicking skills needed in GAA, rugby and soccer and the kicking skills needed in American football, but there are obvious differences too.

Kerry free-taker Seánie O’Shea saw that for himself when he participated in a promotional video for Leader Kicking alongside Galway’s Shane Walsh in 2022.

“Lads find that the distance they’re standing from the ball in Gaelic football versus American football is the

biggest struggle,” Leader explained. “I think Seánie stands nine paces off the ball; in American football you have two-and-a-half.

“Thankfully, you don’t need nine steps. It’s just a thing that we’re used to doing [in Ireland]. Once you get a few repetitions of two-and-a-half, you find that it’s the last two steps where you’re generating power. So guys can get over that hurdle very quickly.

“The actual art of ball striking is very similar in American football, rugby and Gaelic football. It’s all about your foot angle – like in golf, what does your club face look like? – and then how does it transition out of the shot over the yard after impact.”

Jack O’Connor will probably want my head on a plate for even asking the question but I had to know: if someone like Seánie O’Shea gave up Gaelic football and tried to become an NFL kicker, how would he fare?

“In today’s landscape, American football kicking is global,” Leader said. “The standard of competition is really, really high and the level you need to be kicking at is very difficult.

“I think Seánie O’Shea would be capable to compete but he’d probably need months of training to be seriously considered at that level. The raw athleticism and ball striking ability is definitely there. And you know that guys like Seánie can kick under pressure, which is a really good thing to be able to tell American scouts and college coaches.

“But if you want to break into the NFL, there are only 32 people in the world who get to do it, so you can just imagine how competitive that is.”

KILLARNEY

The Killarney event takes place this evening (Friday) at 7pm at Killarney Rugby Club and anyone over the age of 15, of any gender, is encouraged to attend. Whether you’re a talented young person or you're a 50-year-old who has a good strike of a ball, all are welcome.

The top performers from each regional location will compete in Energia Stadium on August 25 in front of thousands of fans as part of the half-time entertainment for the global football showcase, which features teams from across the world.

Ireland’s Kicking King 2023 winner and their plus-one will also get flown to America where they will be put up in a hotel and brought along to a Pittsburgh Steelers NFL game.

But Leader’s ultimate goal is to help young Irish athletes secure a prize far more valuable than a trip abroad: a free ride and a top-class education at a major American college.

Refugee proposal for convent

Cllr Martin Grady has reacted angrily to news that the Presentation Convent in Killarney will be used to house refugees.

The recently sold building will house 104 people once the building is a made suitable for such purposes.

This work could be completed by October according to sources.

The building was bought last week for €3 million – double its asking price.

Grady says that there are currently 46 adults and six children listed as homeless in Kerry – figures he has verified through Kerry County Council officials.

They have to pay a service charge – up to €40 a week - towards cleaning and upkeep of their sheltered accommodation and this money is taken out of their weekly social welfare entitlement. Refugees do not have to pay upkeep fees despite also being in receipt of social welfare payments each week.

“I am not against refugees. Our own citizens are also vulnerable in society. What I am calling for is for the government to review this – that a service charge must be paid by refugees. They are not contributing a penny towards accommodation, something has to give,” he said.

Rían Gleeson a double winner at Fleadh Ceol NEWS BRIEFS...

The sixth-class pupil at St. Oliver’s National School is a member of the Glenflesk branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. His first success, last weekend, came in the miscellaneous competition. This event included competitors on a huge variety of instruments ranging from viola to guitar, melodica to mandolins.

Rían took part on a single row accordion – he has been playing this instrument for the last two years, and is taught by his Dad, MIcheál Gleeson.

He was awarded awarded the Drogheda CCÉ perpetual cup for this competition.

“I could hardly believe when the judge said that the winner and All Ireland Champion for 2023 is Rian Gleeson. I was elated, and a little proud of myself too. I think I might have left out a little cheer,” he said.

He also won the under-12 competition storytelling, retaining the ‘Nóra Butler Memorial Cup’ cup from last year.

Rían has developed a huge passion for the art of storytelling over the past few years.

Some of the best know local story tellers like Sonny Egan, Frances Kennedy, Aindrias de Staic, Colin Urwin and Dick Beamish have taken him under their wing.

Rian was invited to perform at the interval of the All-Ireland senior storytelling competition and wil return to perform at the Listowel and Sneem storytelling festivals in the coming weeks.

“I absolutely love the art of storytelling. It gives me such a buzz making the audience laugh and entertaining them. My stepmom Paula helps me write stories and recitations, and sometimes my Dad is the inspiration! He’s a fairly funny fella,” he added.

White-tailed eagle chicks spread their wings further into Killarney skies

Over the past week, 24 White-tailed eagle chicks have been released in locations around Lough Derg, the Shannon Estuary and the west of Ireland, as part of a long term reintroduction programme managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Four were released in Killarney National Park.

White-tailed eagles are predators who play an important role in nature and the ecosystem.

Once native to Ireland, they became extinct in the nineteenth century. Since 2007, the NPWS has been working with partners in Norway along with farmers and communities around the country to reintroduce the White-tailed eagle to Ireland.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD released the four chicks at Killarney National Park as part of the release programme.

“The juvenile White-tailed eagles we have

released this week are joining a growing population across our island. This incredible endeavour is the result of 16 years’ work and collaboration, not just on the reintroduction programme, but also on habitat restoration and engagement with landowners to secure their ongoing protection,” he said.

“These apex predators perform a vital role in our ecosystems and the sight of them soaring in the thermals is a privilege that everyone who lives in or visits Ireland will now have the opportunity to enjoy. I would like to pay tribute to NPWS staff for their commitment and dedication to this initiative, our interna-

tional partners from Norway, and the communities around the country who are embracing the return of the White-tailed eagle to our landscapes.”

A comprehensive satellite tagging system is now in place so that the birds can be monitored as they disperse around the country.

Eamonn Meskell, Divisional Manager NPWS, Killarney National Park who heads up the White-tailed eagle reintroduction Programme added:

“There is huge interest from the public in the White-tailed eagle programme. Locations where they are spotted attract many visitors and local interest and we love to hear about sightings of the birds around Ireland and further afield. There are great stories to tell about the project. For example, the first Irish bred female to breed in over a hundred years has fledged seven chicks in three years!

In Lough Derg this year for the second time a nesting pair fledged triplets. This is incredibly unusual – even in the wilds of Norway, and it shows how well suited Ireland really is for the White-tailed eagle from both a habitat and a feeding perspective. We’ll be watching this year’s chicks with interest as they mature and hopefully go on to fledge more chicks.”

Country music community concerts return to INEC

The Michael Commins Concert Shows return by popular demand to the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, on Sunday and Monday, 27 and 28 August.

Exciting upgrades at Killarney Royal Hotel

The team at Killarney Royal have announced some exciting developments that have taken place during the busy Summer season, beginning with the newly refurbished Lobby Lounge and Royal Bar and Bistro areas.

The updated bright and airy Lobby Lounge is the perfect space to enjoy the time-honoured tradition of Afternoon Tea or lounge about watching the world go by.

The Royal Bar and Bistro has also been updated, and is the perfect location to sample some of new Executive Head Chef Irek Brudnoik's delightful new dishes.

Originally hailing from Poland, Chef Irek Brudnoik has been residing in Killarney for a number of years, and with over 15 years in the industry, brings a wealth of fine-dining experience with him to Killarney Royal.

The already popular menus in The Royal Bar and Bistro and The Candle Room restaurant have undergone a revamp with

the arrival of Chef Brudnoik – incorporating a new, contemporary feel while keeping the same traditional dishes and quality local ingredients that are a hallmark of the Killarney Royal Experience. Food is served daily from 12.30pm.

The shows were a resounding success on their debut at the venue last August and patrons can once again look forward to two wonderful nights of superb entertainment.

The shows are entirely “community” focussed with traditional country music at the heart and soul of the concerts along with some Irish ballads and folk songs. Such is the attraction of the shows that four artists from Kerry who are appearing on the concerts have chosen this weekend to officially launch their new albums. This is unprecedented and the first time that any concert event has had the honour of launching four albums. The new albums are from Eddie Lee, Paudie McAuliffe, Noreen Ashe and Paudie Coffey. The show on August 27, has a superb line-up with the great Art Supple from Cork among the bill toppers along with Tony Allen (of Foster and Allen), Louise Morrissey and Tony Kerr.

Also on the bill are Paudie McAuliffe, Rachel Goode, Michael and Philomena O’Brien, Annmarie O’Riordan, Ross Molloy, Kevin Prendergast, Kenny Archer, Richard Mulligan, Doris Shire Billy Condon and the Ryan Turner Band. The Monday night show also has Art Supple along with Ciarán Rosney, Aishling

McShain family honoured on Innisfallen Island

Killarney National Park unveiled a plaque in honour of John and Mary McShain, their daughter Sr Pauline and all the McShain family, in recognition of their philanthropic generosity gifting Innisfallen Island to the nation in 1972.

Members of the McShaine family, including Rick Horstmann and John McShain, direct descendants of John and Mary, attended a special ceremony on the island over the weekend.

John McShain sold Killarney House and its estate to the Irish State for a nominal sum in 1979 on the assumption the land would be incorporated into Killarney National Park.

'The Man who built America’ John McShain was born in Philadelphia in 1896. His company became the leading builders in America, responsible for the construction of some of the most iconic structures in the world - The Pentagon, John F. Kennedy Centre, Jefferson Memorial, Roosevelt Library, Washington National Airport. A devout catholic, his company also constructed the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and of course the reconstruction of the White House (1949-1952).

Over 5000 competitors from all over Ireland and overseas played, sung or danced for Comhaltas All Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Mullingar.

From storytelling to concertina, sets to lilting, victors of regional competitions travelled far and wide to compete in one or more of the 230 competitions. The competitions play a central role in the Fleadh and title holders are highly regarded in the traditional Irish music community.

For the second consecutive year, the All Ireland competitions were held in the historic, cultural and very musical town of Mullingar. The town was home to the first ever All-Ireland Fleadh in 1951. It hosted again in 1963, 2022 and 2023. Over the past nine days the streets have been overflowing with Irish music, dance and culture once more.

Dr Labhrás Ó'Murchú, Ardstiúrthóir, Comhaltas Ceoltóiri Éireann said, “We are delighted to return to Mullingar for the second year of the homecoming. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann began here in 1951 and it is extraordinary to see how big and beloved it has become. 72

Joe Connaire, Chairperson of the Fleadh Executive Committee said, “It has been a pleasure to witness so many people enjoy traditional Irish music, song and dance in Mullingar once again. I am grateful that the town’s beauty and character was the backdrop to the Fleadh and I hope all enjoyed our home as much as we do.”

He continued, “It takes a lot of people to make such a wonderful event and create the beautiful moments we will remember from 2023. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the past two years so successful.”

The return of the ‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’

A third ‘Pop Up Gaeltacht’ will take place in Teddy O'Connor's bar on August 25.

Based on previous events, where numbers have been steadily increasing, organiser James Knoblauch has decided to go ahead with a third meeting. At the first Pop Up, they had about 30 in attendance. At the second one, around 50 turned up.

There was a great mix of all levels of fluency, from learners using a ‘cúpla focal’, to native Irish speakers from the Gaeltacht.

Several sixth year students from St Brendan’s College used the last meeting to prepare for their Leaving exams.

“What stood out to all who attended was the mix of old and young there and the positive attitude the younger attendees held towards the language, without the

baggage the older generations might have had,” James told the Killarney Advertiser.

“One lady commented to me that it had to be the largest gathering of locals in Killarney speaking Irish in several hundred years. Not sure how accurate that claim is, but certainly encouraged us to continue with the Pop Ups.”

“Given the reaction from the first two Pop Up Gaeltachtaí, we can see there is definitely a demand for Irish language events in Killarney and occasions to bring together the Irish speaking community in the town. We intend to continue with the Pop Up Gaeltacht, but we'd also like to expand beyond events in a pub setting and continue to grow the community.”

Top adventure race tips for a first timer

Edele Daly offers her insight into how to prepare for the Quest Adventure Race.

Edele from B Well Fitness Club completed Quest Killarney, her first adventure race, last year.

To say she was nervous was an understatement! But the sense of achievement afterwards was worth everything.

HERE ARE HER TOP TIPS FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT:

Use a light bike. A few people advised me to get a racer or hybrid but I borrowed a mountain bike thinking “I’ll be grand”, and my legs were sorry after. A mountain bike is a much heavier bike to cycle and tough on the legs. I was loving the speed of cycling on the open road, so if you’re like me and mad for speed –purchase or borrow a racer.

Bring fluids with you. Being a runner

I’m not used to carrying fluids with me training, as I only run 5-10k runs. Coming in on the last cycle towards the fin-

ish line the muscles in my legs started to cramp and I nearly had to give up. So hydration along the way, either at one of the hydration points or on the bike, would have prevented this.

Enjoy the day. The first 30 minutes I found myself racing in a sense of panic to get it over with, but after the first half an hour I got into the swing of things and had a laugh and a great time. There are some amazing views and experiences to be had on race day. So being present in the moment is definitely a must. I met some amazing people I will never forget.

For anyone new to adventure racing, I would definitely say do it! It’s something you won’t regret, it’s a fun day out for the elite and the novice exerciser. Everyone is helping each other out and there is a great sense of team effort throughout the event.

Treatment Abroad Scheme

How does the Treatment Abroad Scheme work?

If you are a public healthcare patient and require treatment that is not available to you in Ireland, you may be able to apply for the Treatment Abroad Scheme (TAS). This allows you to get the medical treatment in another country in the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (the EEA also includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or in Switzerland. Before you travel for your treatment, the HSE must assess and approve your application.

How to qualify for the Treatment Abroad Scheme?

You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland to qualify for the Treatment Abroad Scheme (TAS). This means you live in Ireland and intend to live here for at least one year.

The medical treatment you need must be either not available in Ireland or not available within the time normally necessary to get it in Ireland, taking into account your current health and the likely course of your condition or disease

You cannot refer yourself for TAS. Only a public hospital consultant based in Ireland can refer you for treatment abroad. A GP cannot refer you for this scheme. How do I apply for the Treatment Abroad Scheme?

You, and your referring consultant, must complete an E112 application form which you can download or contact your local Citizens Information Centre and they will get it for you.

You must send this to the HSE Treatment Abroad Scheme office with a copy of your referral letter from your consultant when applying. You should apply early, as you will have to wait for the HSE to approve your treatment abroad before you travel.

In the E112 form, your consultant must confirm that:

• They are the consultant that is currently treating you

• They assessed you within a 2-week period before making an application to the HSE

• The application is based on their own medical opinion. A consultant cannot fill in a form at the request of another person

The E112 form will ask your consultant to confirm that the treatment abroad is:

• Medically necessary and will meet your needs

• Recognised by Irish law (unproven, experimental or test treatments are not covered)

• Available abroad in a public healthcare setting run by a registered medical practitioner

• Performed in a recognised hospital or other institution that accepts the E112 form

When will I get a decision on my application for TAS?

You will get a decision on your application by letter, usually within 15 to 20 working days.

What happens after my TAS application has been approved?

If your application is approved, this means the HSE will pay for some or all of the cost of the treatment abroad. The HSE will issue you an approval letter that tells you what to do next.

Your application must be approved by the HSE before you travel or start treatment abroad. You must give the HSE information about every appointment that you are due to attend.

What costs are covered by the Treatment Abroad Scheme (TAS)?

The amount that the HSE can cover can be different depending on the country where you get treatment and the treatment that you need. You can ask the hospital abroad how much you will need to pay. You must provide confirmation of every appointment you are due to attend so that the Health Service Executive (HSE) can approve your E112 form to cover the cost of your visit. If you do not have the document at your appointment, you may be charged and not be refunded by the HSE TAS office.

If you get additional healthcare treatments, associated examinations or consultations, while you are abroad that have not been pre-approved by the HSE TAS office, these will not be covered by the scheme. If you don’t bring your approved E112 form to your appointment abroad, you might have to pay for your hospital visit. In this case, these costs will not be refunded by HSE TAS office. You may be able to get the Treatment Abroad Scheme to pay for some of the fares for air or sea travel for you and a travelling companion.

Can I apply for the Scheme if I am a private patient?

If you are a private patient, you cannot be referred for the scheme by a private hospital consultant.

You should apply to your private health insurance provider to fund the treatment abroad. If your private health insurance provider declines your application and you have been refused on appeal, you can then apply to the Treatment Abroad Scheme.

When applying for TAS as a private patient you need to show your:

• Declined application from your insurance provider

• Documents to show you have tried to appeal the insurance providers decision How do I contact the Treatment Abroad Scheme (TAS) Office?

Tel: 056 778 4900 or 056 778 4908 Email: treatmentabroad.scheme@hse.ie

Valentia cable links bolstered by Newfoundland visit

A Kerry delegation led by the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Jim Finucane completed a successful four-day visit to Newfoundland, Canada to progress the joint transatlantic cable World Heritage bid between Valentia and Heart’s Content.

The group which included representatives of Kerry County Council, the Valentia community, Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation and Ireland’s Chief Archaeologist, Michael MacDonagh, held a series of meetings with their counterparts in Heart’s Content Cable Station and at Government Buildings in St. John’s.

Valentia was placed on Ireland’s World Heritage Tentative List in July 2022, the first stage in the long journey towards UNESCO world heritage designation, and last September a Newfoundland Labrador Government delegation visited Valentia to sign a memorandum of understanding with Kerry County Council. The laying of the undersea telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean from Valentia to Newfoundland initially in 1858 and permanently from 1866 was of global significance and of “outstanding universal value.” It was a technological feat that changed the world. What before that took 10 days to send a message by ship (one way) from Europe to North America could now be done electronically in a matter of minutes. It is described as the engineering equivalent of putting a man on the Moon for its time.

Both cable stations were eventually closed in 1966 but, unlike Valentia, the Hearts Content Station was retained completely intact by the Provincial Government and retains all its original equip-

ment and has sufficient surplus in its stores to refit the Valentia Station.

The permanent loan of equipment to Valentia was among the topics under discussion during meetings with Minister Steve Crocker on behalf of the Newfoundland-Labrador Government. There was a series of meetings around the next phases in the UNESCO process which will include further community engagement, the appointment of local co-ordinators and nomination teams in both Valentia and Hearts Content and a UNESCO expert to oversee the joint application.

Heart’s Content like Valentia is a coastal community very dependent on the marine and tourism which has suffered from population decline and aging demographic in recent years. There were also discussions around wider economic co-operation and development, culture

and education initiatives and student exchanges.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by the local community of Heart’s Content with the local Council hosting a reception in their honour.

Speaking at the conclusion of the visit, Cllr. Finucane said that “Kerry County Council’s involvement in the project has, from the outset, been in a supporting role to the Valentia Island Development Company and local community. It is motivated by the desire to conserve and highlight this unique heritage but also to leverage the funding, job creation, wider economic and social benefits for Valentia and the county at large that the UNESCO brand can attract. Heart’s Content has similar challenges and aspirations. Working together as partners and with both Governments, I am confident we can achieve our goals.”

Scientists celebrate as pig kidney continues to function in human body

Surgeons hope that cross-species organ transplants could eventually help save lives of human patients.

Surgeons in the United States have announced that a pig kidney they transplanted into the body of a brain-dead human patient has functioned normally for more than a month, a promising sign in the effort to address widespread organ donation needs.

Surgeons at the New York University

Langone Transplant Institute said on Wednesday that the milestone is the longest a pig kidney had functioned in a person, albeit a deceased one.

“We have a genetically edited pig kidney surviving for over a month in a human,”

institute director Robert Montgomery told reporters.

He said the results provide “further assurances” for any future studies in living patients. The pig kidney had been genetically modified to omit a gene that produces biomolecules that human immune systems attack and reject.

Scientists hope that cross-species transplants could help deliver assistance to the many people who are waiting for potentially life-saving organs.

Wednesday’s breakthrough began with the transfer of a pig kidney into the body of Maurice “Mo” Miller, a man who had died suddenly at the age of 57 and whose body was donated to science by his family.

Aer

Lingus

and Ryanair

ban certain bags from flights

As more of us try to escape our Irish summer for a last-minute sunshine break, take note if you are flying with high tech luggage, you could be prevented from boarding your flight with changes to airline policies.

But holidaymakers are being warned to double check the rules of the airlines, to prevent any last-minute surprises. More and more people are opting for hand luggage; however, passengers are being warned that certain bags are banned from many airlines including Ryanair and Aer Lingus.

Smart bags featuring built-in electronics boasting benefits like device charging, electronic locks and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities are one such bag type that has recently been banned by several airlines, with some passengers being refused boarding when travelling with them.

Ryanair allows smart bags to be taken

onboard as carry-on luggage, but only if the lithium battery is removed before the bag is stored in the overhead locker, with the battery always remaining with you during the flight.

Smart bags can also be carried in the hold as check in luggage as long as the battery/power bank is removed before it is dropped off at check in/bag drop off. The battery must then be carried on to the plane with you.

If the power bank has not been removed, the bags will be banned on the flight as either checked-in luggage or carry-on bags.

According to Aer Lingus, smart bags can be carried onboard if the battery is removed with the terminals protected against short circuit. If the battery cannot be readily removed by the passenger the bag be carried onboard. The ban also extends to the wattage rating of the battery/power bank not exceeding 100Wh, or if the wattage rating cannot be determined.

Canadian city evacuation as wildfires advance Michael Parkinson has died aged 88

Residents of Yellowknife, Canada have been advising to evacuate their homes and businesses by noon today (Friday) in the latest terrifying wildfire crisis.

Yellowknife is the newest chapter of a terrible summer for wildfires globally, as flames spread quickly across the country. More than 1,000 wildfires are currently burning across the country.

"Unfortunately, our wildfire situation

has taken another turn for the worse with a fire burning west of Yellowknife now representing a real threat to the city," Shane Thompson, the Northwest Territories' environment minister, told a news conference.

He ordered the city's nearly 20,000 residents to leave by noon today (Friday). There is only one highway open to the south. Commercial and military flights were also being arranged.

Celebrated chat show host Michael Parkinson has died peacefully at home at the age of 88 surrounded by loved ones, his family has said.

Michael Parkinson became a familiar face on both the BBC and ITV because of his intimate celebrity interviews,

most notably on the BBC show Parkinson, interviewing some of Hollywood's biggest names throughout his illustrious career - with names such as Jimmy Cagney, Fred Astaire, Lauren Bacall, Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, John Lennon and Ingrid Bergman on the list. Parkinson brought down the curtain on more than 30 years of his chat show at the end of 2007 with a final show featuring David Beckham, Michael Caine, David Attenborough, Judi Dench, Edna Everage, Billy Connolly, Peter Kay and Jamie Cullum in a two-hour special.

“As I have already stated, this closure, even though night time only, will be very intrusive on the lives of many people travelling in and out of South Kerry and Iveragh areas, including businesses for a long period. I am assured that these works are essential and that access will

“An alternative route is to be signposted for those who wish to travel during the closure period. Kerry County Council has also invited submission of any objections by mail or email. Classic club presents €2,100 to the Mater Hospital

Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club presented a cheque for €2,100 to the Mater Hospital Foundation following their classic car auction at the July 9 Car Show.

The club auctioned a Renault Megane Cabriolet which was donated to the club by a member and kindly sponsored by BG Motors Killarney.

Local businessman Dermot Healy came away the lucky owner of the car after the auction, which was conducted by Billy Hennigan. Next up for the progressive club is a car

show dedicated to woman motorsport and motoring enthusiasts.

‘Heels and Wheels’ will run at Killarney Racecourse on September 10 - Classic, Vintage, Retro and Modern Modified cars are welcome – but female drivers and enthusiasts will get centre stage.

Kelliher’s Toyota, from Tralee, will also attend the event. They will offer the general public to the chance to drive electric cars on the racecourse’s ambulance track. For many this will be their first opportunity to drive such vehicles – more details of this element of the show will be released in the next week or two

Local man’s travel film to feature at KIFF

A Killarney-based Polish couple’s short film on their travels around the world will make its debut at the Kerry International Film Festival in October.

Arkadiusz Patla and his partner Natalia Stelmaszewska’s film ‘The Journey Called Life’ hopes to inspire people to get out their comfort zones and travel the world.

Arkadiusz, who has been living in Killarney for 17 years, first got the travel bug in 2015 when he visited several Asian countries.

While the pandemic put his plans on hold, lockdowns also made him realise that there is more to life that sitting around the house.

“There is more to life, inspiration came from lockdown, my message is get off the couch,” he said.

“I want to travel as much as possible, and

everyone can do it.”

He returned to traveling in December 2022 and while on a trip to Bangkok he met Natalia.

The pair quickly became a couple due to their shared love of travelling and that inspired the short movie that will be shown at the October 19 to 22 film festival that will be headquartered in Killarney. They also hope to launch a collection of travel accessories and bags based on his social media channels ‘POLISHMANTRAVEL'.

Mobile Home Insurance explained

Mobile home insurance in Ireland typically provides coverage for various risks and perils that may affect mobile homes, which are also known as static caravans.

The exact coverage may vary between insurance providers, so it’s essential to review the specific policy details. However, here are some common coverage areas included in mobile home insurance in Ireland:

Buildings Coverage: This covers the structure of the mobile home itself, including its walls, roof, floors, and fixtures. It provides protection against events like fire, storm damage, vandalism, theft, and accidental damage.

Contents Coverage: This includes coverage for the contents inside the mobile

home, such as furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, and personal belongings. It typically protects against risks like fire, theft, vandalism, and accidental damage.

Accidental Damage: This coverage protects against accidental damage to both the structure of the mobile home and its contents. It may include incidents like spills, breakages, or accidental damage caused by children or pets.

Theft and Vandalism: Mobile home insurance usually covers theft or attempted theft of belongings from the mobile

home, as well as damage caused by vandalism or malicious acts.

Fire and Smoke Damage: Coverage is provided for damage caused by fire and smoke, which can be particularly devastating for mobile homes.

Storm and Weather Damage: Insurance policies typically cover damage caused by severe weather conditions such as storms, high winds, hail, or lightning.

Flood Damage: Depending on the location of the mobile home, coverage for flood damage may be included or available as an optional add-on.

Public Liability: This coverage protects the policyholder against claims for accidental bodily injury or property damage that may occur to third parties while on

Fr Mark ordained in “uplifting ceremony’

Parish history was made in St Mary’s Cathedral on Monday night when a newly ordained priest said his first Mass.

Fr Mark Moriarty was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Kerry on Sunday.

He is the first priest to be ordained in Kerry since 2018 when Fr Sean Lyons was ordained and only the second since 2007 – a sign of falling numbers within religious vocations in the county.

On Sunday Fr Mark was joined by his parents Brian, Marjie and his brother Paul at “an uplifting ceremony and a

day of hope for the Diocese of Kerry as a whole,” according to the chief celebrant Bishop Ray Browne

Just over a year ago Mark was ordained a deacon – one step below a priest in church hierarchy – and spent the last year helping in the parishes of Tralee and Killarney.

Mark will completed his journey on Sunday. The Aghadoe man will be posted to the Diocese of Kerry.

God’s Garden

God looked around his garden

And saw an empty space He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest God’s garden must be beautfiul He only takes the best.

God knew you were in pain

And a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eyes And whispered ‘Come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you And saw you slip away

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me.

This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. MMcC

Kerry ladies boss Quill says his team will be back for more in 2024

A little over 24 hours after his side lost out to Dublin in the 2023 All-Ireland football final, Kerry joint-manager Declan Quill assured fans that his players will be gunning for glory once again when the 2024 season comes around. Speaking at the team’s homecoming in Killarney on Monday evening, Quill heaped praise on his charges, who just came up short against the Dubs in Croke Park on Sunday.

“The girls are fabulous to work with,” the Kerins O’Rahillys man told a large crowd at the Glebe car park. “Thirty-six unbelievable role models. They’ve repre-

sented themselves and their families so well over the last number of years, and especially this year.

“We brought a national title back to the county in April - that can’t be forgotten. This bunch of girls won Division 1 of the National League for the first time in 32 years. That’s a huge achievement.

“We left a big one behind us yesterday but we’re on a bit of a mission still and we’ll be back. Next year we’ll be holding the cup, hopefully.”

However, after four years in charge, Quill and co-manager Darragh Long are known to be considering their positions.

They will make a decision during the off-season.

The Kingdom travelled to the capital in confident form having beaten their opponents twice before in 2023, but they encountered a different Dublin team in HQ. With inspirational full forward Hannah Tyrrell in unbelievable form, the natives ran up a commanding half-time lead of seven (0-11 to 0-4).

The shock introduction of Kerry captain Síofra O’Shea, who injured her cruciate before the semi-final and was expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season, gave fans in green and gold a lift – al-

though Quill and Long would have been hoping for a much closer game at that stage of proceedings.

A fisted goal by star forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh cut the deficit to four late on but, in truth, Kerry never really looked like pegging their rivals back. Fittingly, Dublin captain Carla Rowe kicked the last point of the game to leave the final score at Dublin 0-18 Kerry 1-10. Sadly, this is Kerry’s second successive final defeat as Dublin took home the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 2020, when they completed their four-in-a-row.

These girls have represented themselves and their families so well, especially this year.

The sin bin isn’t deterring fouls – so what’s the point?

From Kerry’s perspective, the most frustrating thing about last Sunday’s All-Ireland final is that they didn’t put forward their best version of themselves. They have been electrifying at times this season but, for whatever reason, they looked a bit out of sorts against Dublin.

During the opening exchanges they really struggled to pin down the excellent Hannah Tyrrell, who kicked eight of the Dubs’ 11 first-half points. Contrary to some viral tweets, Tyrrell didn’t give birth to the seven-weekold baby she cradled in her arms at full-time – the credit there goes to her wife – but her performance was still incredible.

Going the other way, Kerry never got rolling offensively. They prefer to move the ball at pace, and they have the speed and skills to get from one end of the field to the other with real efficiency, but Dublin never allowed that to happen. Mick Bohan’s side were clearly well drilled and they frequently engaged in tactical fouling to slow Kerry down. Stopping their opponents’ momentum gave them the opportunity to retreat and get their shape. When Kerry did attack, they invariably ran into a brick wall and wound up turning the ball over far too often.

Some of this was simply down to bad decision-making – either by not avoiding contact or by attempting passes that weren’t on – and the players will take ownership for those errors.

But it would be remiss of any reporter to overlook Dublin’s foul count in this game and also in the games preceding it. The eventual champions had 26 fouls to Kerry’s 14 in the final. In the semi-final they had 35 fouls to Cork’s 13. And in the quarter-final they had 30 fouls to Donegal’s 13 (stats via @GaelicStatsman on Twitter).

Over a three-match period, Dublin committed 91 fouls – over 30 fouls per game – while their opponents committed just 40 fouls between them (13.3 fouls per game). That’s a massive discrepancy.

For further context, teams in the men’s All-Ireland series committed an average of 14.4 fouls per game. Armagh v Monaghan was the match with the most fouls (38 in total, 19 per team). And that match went to extra time. A foul count of 30-plus for one team in one match isn’t at all common anywhere.

You might expect Dublin’s abnormal foul count to be reflected, at least to some extent, in their card count, but that wasn’t the case. Just one of their

91 fouls resulted in a yellow card. Eilísh O’Dowd was booked – and sinbinned - for pulling back an opponent with 11 minutes to go against Cork with the referee indicating that it was her third such infraction.

The official LGFA guide states that “repetition” of fouls like pushing or holding “shall constitute a yellow card offence”. It doesn’t state that three fouls equals a yellow. By definition, repetition means doing something again. But refs, players and coaches operate under the assumption that three is the magic number. Incidentally, the GAA rule book is less ambiguous. It says that offenders should be cautioned for committing this kind of foul a second time.

Whatever the official wording, it’s clear that men’s and women’s referees treat yellow cards very differently – even beyond the two/three-foul distinction. In the men’s All-Ireland series, a yellow card was issued once every 4.7 fouls. Meanwhile, in the women’s series, a yellow card was issued once every 72.8 fouls. Obviously, the major difference between yellows in men’s and women’s football is the punishment that follows. Men can stay on the pitch. Women go to the sin bin for ten minutes. Do we see fewer yellow cards

in ladies’ football because referees are less inclined to effectively send a player off – even temporarily – for minor infringements like holding or pushing?

When it comes down to it, cards are there to discourage players from fouling again. Therefore, it stands to reason that reluctance to issue cards leads to more fouls, which perhaps explains why a team like Dublin can effectively get away with committing over 30 fouls per game.

The sin bin rule, which was brought in as a deterrent to prevent foul play, may actually be deterring referees from punishing foul play. You have to wonder if ladies’ football would be better off without it.

With regards to this year’s final, Kerry can have no major complaints about the result. Dublin were the better side on the day and they deserved to win.

But if a team can consistently commit such a high number of fouls, go largely unpunished, and wind up as All-Ireland champions, it sets a negative precedent - and it also suggests that there might be something wrong with the laws of the game.

Tough first half seals Kerry’s fate

No joy for the Kerry LGFA team, who were beaten by Dublin in the All-Ireland final, 0-18 to 1-10, at Croke Park on Sunday last.

It was five points in it at the end but Dublin were clear leaders throughout. A late Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh goal brought Kerry closer.

Hopes were realistically high that the ladies of the Kingdom would succeed where the men failed in their quest for

the Sam Maguire. However, the Brendan Martin Cup is also now residing in Dublin. The Dublin propaganda machine went into overdrive leading up to the game with the Dubs claiming that Kerry bullied them in previous outings this year. Well, it was Dublin who did the bullying at Croker on Sunday last, horsing into the Kerry ladies with near carte blanche permission from the referee.

Kerry’s fate was effectively sealed in the opening half when Dublin took the

Kilcummin to relive crowning glory of ‘73

Kilcummin GAA, winners of the O’Donoghue Cup in 1973, will return to the Fáilte Hotel on College Street on Saturday, August 26 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of that historic win over Glenflesk.

Seán Kelly MEP and Billy Doolan, president of the club, were players on the ’73 winning side and have been working for several months planning this reunion. The response has been magnificent according to a spokesperson for Kilcummin.

Fortunately, most of the 1973 panel are alive and well. Those few members who have passed away will not be forgotten and will be represented by family members. Former goalkeeper Seán O’Connor will be travelling from Australia where he has lived since 1973. Monty O’Sullivan comes in from Boston. John O’Sullivan’s wife is travelling from London and oth-

ers will travel from Dublin, Kildare, Cork and Limerick. The majority live locally. The venue had to be the Fáilte where they celebrated long and well 50 years ago. All the arrangements are in place by Eileen O’Callaghan and Botty, of course.

The planned schedule is mass at 5.30pm, team photograph at 6.30pm, reunion dinner at 7pm, and then it will be a night of reminiscing and nostalgia for glory days gone by with ceol, caint and craic go maidin Dé Domhnaigh.

1973 was Kilcummin’s most successful year on the playing fields as they won the Kerry Junior Championship, Division 3 of the County League, and the O’Donoghue Cup, which takes pride of place. The only title that eluded them was the East Kerry League. They were beaten in the final by a single point. In the O’Donoghue Cup campaign they defeated Firies and Rathmore. A late point by Dan O’Connor edged them past

game to them. They cut lanes through an overburdened Kerry defence, running riot even from the half back line. Not just that but they scored regularly, especially Hannah Tyrrell who led the way with an outstanding 0-8, all of which came in the opening half.

Dublin were in control right from the start and added to the All-Ireland victory by their male counterparts. It was double pain for Kerry.

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh was once

again the top scorer for Kerry, ending with 1-7. It would have been more only for the double marking of the Kerry star and the tenacious tackling that often tipped over into illegalities. Too often those tackles went unpunished. Kerry battled bravely in the second half but even when they scored Dublin hit back with suckerpunch points. It was a big disappointment, compounding the pain of the Sam Maguire going Liffeyside. It’s hard to take losing two All-Ireland finals in a row.

Full credit to the Kerry LGFA for a great year but the icing for the cake never looked like arriving in this final.

CELEBRATION: 1973 was Kilcummin's most successful year on the playing fields as they won the Kerry Junior Championship, Division 3 of the County League, and the O'Donoghue Cup.

Dr Crokes and that was a huge psychological boost achieved through Man of the Match Johnny Healy. For the final, Fr Brian Kelly had them in top shape, but it still ended in a draw. They held a nine-point lead at one stage. Heading for an historic win with only seconds to play, the great Glenflesk and Kerry stalwart Derry Crowley sent a rasper to the net to tie the scores on 2-10. They had to do it all again in the replay

three weeks later. Kilcummin made no mistake this time winning comfortably 1-9 to 0-7. The goal was vital, scored by captain Dan Dwyer, who dribbled the ball Maradona-style for 40 yards before planting it past Glenflesk goalkeeper Freddie Bartlett.

That and more, much more will be recalled in this night of nostalgia down memory lane for the Kilcummin men of 1973.

Dr Crokes saddened by sudden death of great club man

The Dr Crokes club was rocked on Saturday last with the sudden and unexpected premature death of outstanding club man Malachy Walsh. He died suddenly on the 3rd tee box at Kenmare Golf club where he was playing in the Dr Crokes Golf Society President’s Prize (Martin Byrne’s).

He devoted so much of his energies for the benefit of his beloved club. He played with Dr Crokes for many years and when his playing days were over, he became a senior selector helping them to win titles at Kerry and Munster levels in a glorious era for the club as they dominated the football scene. Malachy was a trojan worker for many years in the highly successful club lotto and a host of other club activities. He was the ultimate volunteer in any activity where the club needed people to take responsibility for so many projects. The large number of club members who gave him a well-deserved guard of honour was testament to the respect in which he was held. His other great in-

terest was playing golf in Killarney and elsewhere with friends and companions. May the good Lord reward him for his trojan work in sporting spheres. This gentle affable sportsman will be missed by his family and friends, especially in Crokes and golf circles.

Comhbhrón ó chroí to the family and friends of this remarkable club man.

Best of luck to David Kenny, the Athletics Ireland race walker from Firies, following in the same winning ways of Gillian O’Sullivan of former years. David will be doing his almighty best in the 20k race walk in the World Games at Budapest August 19-27. The Farranfore-Maine Valley clubman will be under starter’s orders from tomorrow. He does have the benefit of former Olympian Rob Heffernan to coach him. David has been showing great form

having won the Irish 10k at Morton Stadium last month. Good luck David. Is fear rith maith ná droch-sheasamh. Other great news is the confirmation that Andrea Hegarty is in the Irish squad for the U18 Irish Fast Pitch Softball team which has qualified for the 2024 World Championships. She has direct Killarney relations, even though she is based in New York.

Ireland punches above its weight on the world stages of rowing - Killarney s oldest sport. Muckross rowers Caoimhe O’Sullivan and Daniel Daly are good examples having represented Ireland at the Home Internationals in Lough Rynn. Other local rowing clubs can also boast of international successes. Well down to all concerned.

Heartbreak for Killarney Celtic in FAI Women's Under 17 Cup final

In an entertaining game, Emily O'Reilly gave Bohemians the lead before Sarah Abullo added a second goal. Meave Courtney scored for Killarney to get them back into the game, while Keira Burke added the third goal for the Waterford side.

With a goal by Katie Doe in the final minutes, there was a tense final 10 minutes of play but Bohemians got through the last period to claim the win.

Both teams had early chances to score, with Bohemians having the better start and forcing a number of corners. Holly Butler had a shot that was deflected wide.

Sarah Abullo was unable to get to Kiera Burke's long ball into the Killarney area before Emily O'Reilly did who found herself one on one with Lucy O'Connor who was able to smother the ball at the strikers' feet.

Elle Mai Nugent gave Ava O'Malley and Aideen O'Brien another chance to score for Killarney, but Grace Geraghty was quick to react and intercept the ball.

Bohemians' Fiabh Costin came close to opening the score with a free kick that just missed the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Bohemians’ defence had to be alert to stop Katie Foster's half-volley attempt from a corner, which was Killarney's best opportunity of the first half. In the ensuing phase of play, Sarah Abullo was about to get past the Killarney defence, but Lucy O'Connor made a superb save to stop the forward.

Emily O'Reilly opened the scoring for Bohemians a few seconds later with a speculative shot that sailed over O'Connor and into the top of the net. Bohemians midfielder Emily O'Reilly had another opportunity to double her tally in the second half, but her goal-bound attempt was blocked.

After putting in a lot of effort up front, Sarah Abullo earned her due rewards as she added a second goal for Bohemians by putting the ball easily past Lucy O'Connor and doubling their advantage.

Meave Courtney's spectacular goal helped Killarney get back into the match as she collected the ball just outside the penalty area and struck the ball first time, beating an outstretched Grace Geraghty to the top of the net. Grainne Kennedy came dangerously close to levelling the contest at the back post from a corner,

however, her attempt was just wide. With ten minutes left, Katie Foster nearly levelled the score when she pounced onto a mislaid pass, but her shot missed Geraghty's far post.

After Nicole McCarty's free-kick was deflected for a corner by Killarney’s Lucy O'Connor, there was a scramble in the area, and Keira Burke slammed the ball home from close range to restore Bohemian's two-goal advantage.

With five minutes left, Katie Doe scored another goal for Killarney with a perfectly placed free kick that found the top corner. In the game's closing moments, both teams made attempts at goal, but neither was successful, and the cup now heads to Waterford.

Killarney Celtic

FINAL: FAI Women's U17 Cup Final - Bohemians Waterford 3 Killarney Celtic 2 (Maeve Courtney, Katie Doe). Despite a valiant attempt Killarney Celtic came up short against a fine Bohemians side in an entertaining final played in Turners Cross last Saturday. Bohs had the aid of the breeze and were the dominant attacking force in the early action with ever dangerous Sarah Abullo leading the line for Bohs. In the 37th min Abullo went clear of the defence but was denied by Lucy O'Connor. Bohs recovered the ball and went close from a header. Those let offs did not last long as Bohemians took the lead in the next play when a speculative shot from Emily O'Reilly ended up in the back of the net. Celtic were finding it hard to create clear cut chances and Bohemians continued to force the pace with Abullo causing problems with her pace and control. On 55 mins Abullo cut through the Celtic defence and finished with aplomb to give Bohemians a 2-goal cushion. Celtic were back in the game on 69 mins when Maeve Courtney scored a spectacular goal from outside the box. Grainne Kennedy, Maeve Courtney and Katie Doe gave the Bohs defence anxious moments before Bohemians struck again from a corner when Celtic failed to clear their line. Celtic refused to give up and in the 84th min Katie Doe scored direct from a free kick to ensure a pulsating final period which included 12 mins of injury time. However try as they might Celtic could not find an equaliser and the cup went to Waterford. Many thanks to our players who gave a wholehearted display right to the final whistle and were a credit to the club. Many thanks to our coaches, Alan, David and Tanya. Many thanks to the great support on the day in Turners Cross.

Killarney Legion GAA

INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Our Senior Men made a winning start to Intermediate group stages with a 1-20 to 0-8 win over Currow in Farranfore last Sunday. The game was a slow burner with it really only opening up in the final quarter when a Will Shine goal put the gloss on the score line. A cagey first half saw the teams retire to the dressing rooms on double scores, 0-8 to 0-4. Peter McCarthy alongside Will, was scorer in chief with three points in the opening half, Eoghan O’Sullivan and Ryan O’Grady also getting in on the act. Currow struck for the opening point of the second half, but it was only a signal for our lads to take control with Jamie Alade and substitute James O’Donoghue amongst the scorers. Danny Sheahan stole forward from full back to slot over as did Shaun Keane who made a productive appearance in the second half. The scoring was completed by Cian Gammell and Thomas Moriarty alongside regular contributors Peter Mc and Shine. Tougher tests lie in wait, starting with the visit of Laune Rangers to Direen, this

Sunday at 2pm, in Round 2 with the final round involving an arduous trek to Kilcummin.

KERRY LADIES: Commiserations to the Ladies team who went down to Dublin in the TG4 All Ireland Championship final in Croke Park on Sunday. Never really getting a handle on the game they fought valiantly till the end. A bus from the club made the trip and aside from the obvious disappointment at the result a good trip was had by all.

CLUB SUMMER CAMP: The Club Summer Camp 2023 was held last week and for a change this summer the weather co-operated for a feast of fun at Direen. Thanks to all the kids who participated and a huge well done to all our volunteers who ran the camp each day. A special word of thanks to our juvenile members who assisted the camp leaders - future coaches in the making no doubt! TERENCE CASEY: We would like to acknowledge the passing of one of our honorary members and a fantastic friend to the fishing community in Killarney for decades - Terence Casey passed on to his eternal reward on Monday 07th of August. We were very honoured to count Terence as a member and advisor for many years and he imparted his wisdom on matter pertaining to fishing for the betterment of anglers in the present gen-

eration and generations to come. A good world needs knowledge, kindness and courage and Terence personified this. He was very proud of Killarney, the National Park, the lakes and the ties it all had to the people. He gave most willingly of his time and boundless knowledge when it came to ensuring that generations to come would enjoy the bounty of the lakes and the park, just as his own generation had the pleasure of doing and he had the faculty of instilling the same responsibility in people of the need to protect and cherish our very beautiful surrounds. At this sad time, we would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to Terence's wife Geraldine, his children Niamh and Terry, His brother Owen and family and to the wider Casey and O'Connor Families and remind them all of the rich legacy that Terence has left us all. Gone but not forgotten, May He Rest In Peace. On the very waters that Terence cherished so much, as the days have had a slight autumnal touch about them, we have slipped back into the cycle of competition times again - our next club outing will be on Lough Lein on Sunday 27th of August as we fish for the Church Island Cup. We look forward to meeting up with members then and entries now being taken to any club officer.

Muckross Rowing Club

REGATTA UPDATES: It was a busy weekend for the club in Bantry last weekend, with Bantry RC hosting a double header of coastal racing events. On Saturday, the inaugural Irish Junior Coastal Championships were held. This was the first time that a dedicated Championships regatta for junior rowers was staged in the offshore or coastal branch of the sport. This is another encouraging sign for the development of coastal rowing in Ireland (also known as offshore rowing), which is going from strength to strength ahead of its Olympic debut in 2028. Our congratulations go to the two Muckross crews who became the first winners of coastal championship titles for the club. The Men’s J16 Quad of Max Coyne, Senan Kennedy, Gearoid O’Connor and Jack Murphy were among the gold medals. So too was the Men’s J18 Double crew of Ian Coffey and Daniel Daly, with Gearoid O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Connor also third in the same category. Max and Jack were silver medallists also in the Men’s J16 Double while the Men’s J14 Quad were third. Outside of the junior contest, Bantry Regatta was also run over both Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations to our winning Men’s Open Quad crew of Ethan O’Neill, Patrick Buckley, Brendan O’Neill and Paul Griffin.

BBQ POSTPONEMENT: It was with disappointment that the club’s barbeque scheduled for last weekend was postponed. This was due to unforeseen circumstances however we hope to have a rescheduled date soon. Watch our social media for the latest updates.
