Don’t Touch Your Phone!

The Morning Routine

A friend and past kickboxer Julie Roy shared this with us.

How many of you start your day and before you know it it’s already 10 am?!

She shared a cool article that spoke about “The Morning Routine and How to Get the Most Productivity in Your Day.”

The article mentioned many steps but claimed that these are the 4 most important:

Cinch’s survey of over 1,000 individuals found that 49% check their phones upon waking up. Almost half (2 out of 5) of those people also reported higher stress levels and, similarly, 53% of people who check their phone first say they experience low productivity.

Have an Attitude of Graditude

Reflect on what you’re grateful for!

Starting your day with gratitude can not only help you feel better emotionally but physically!

Control Your Time

Write down your top priorities! It’s easy to forget about tasks we have to do when other responsibilities and distractions arise throughout the day. Planning out your to-do list from most to least important is a great way to stay organized and on track. According to scheduling software company Trafft, if you spend 12 minutes planning your day, you’ll save up to 2 hours of time that would have otherwise gone to waste.

By prioritizing your day, instead of “letting the workday decide what you are going to do,” you will ultimately become more

productive.

Plan the Night Before

Setting the tone for your morning routine actually starts the night before. By looking over your schedule, planning out your outfit or packing your work bag the night before, you can eliminate much of

the stress that comes with getting ready in the morning. Even if you don’t have time to do all of these things, making the effort to be intentional about planning your day is a part of “taking care of yourself.”

have learned so much from and who have always encouraged me. They showed me that we are all capable of more than we give ourselves credit for. I wouldn’t have started my own practice if it hadn’t been for the confidence I gained through those relationships.

Why did you decide to start Bloom?

I have a masters degree in social work and have been providing counselling therapy to kids and their parents for the past 18 years. During this time I have worked in many publicly funded settings including mental health agencies, hospitals, and schools. Due to many funding and resource constraints, myself and many other clinicians in the system often found ourselves stuck having to use a reactive, or ‘band aid’ approach, in our interventions, rather than proactively helping kids and teens establish good mental health before they go into crisis. Wanting to break that cycle, I decided to start my own practice to help meet the needs of the Lakeshore community in more proactive ways. I also had many amazing mentors during my career who I

What ages can benefit from Bloom?

Bloom is a counselling clinic specializing in children and teens, offering a variety of services to promote positive mental health. We provide child therapy sessions (ages 6-11 yrs); Teen therapy sessions (ages 12-21); and parent consultations. We offer these both in-person and virtual. We are also looking to run groups in the future!

While planning Bloom, where did you draw inspiration? What did you want to incorporate?

1 in 5 youth experience a mental health difficulty and the data has shown an increase in these concerns during the pandemic. More and more, mental health is becoming a parent’s biggest concern. The research shows that

adulthood, and yet wait lists for mental health services for kids in Ontario have more than doubled in the last five years. Only those kids who are at risk are being seen in a timely manner, leaving many others waiting for help until they go into crisis. Because of this, more and more families with access to extended health benefits are choosing to use private counselling services. This is where we come in. We are filling that gap by providing effective psychotherapy to address many common mental depression, anxiety, academic stress, ADHD, friendship troubles, grief/loss, etc. My vision health concerns including is to create a community where all children and youth have the skills to understand and navigate emotions to live their best life without stigma. We offer a non-judgemental and confidential space to engage in mental health literacy and social emotional learning skills through evidence based therapeutic interactions. All of our Bloom therapists are highly trained and qualified to use these interventions, but we provide this in a very laid back and comfortable atmosphere. When planning the

space, I wanted people to have the same feeling as hanging out in their living room, not like at a doctor’s office. For families who are curious about what our space looks like, we have a video preview on our website. When coming up with a name for the practice, the bloom analogy perfectly captured what I wish for kids. Walking into our front doors the first words you see on the wall are:

sively in counselling for children and youth. We also have Juno, our therapy dog, that sometimes joins in on sessions to help serve as a calming, engaging, and comforting ally in exploring emotions and solving problems.

What are some tools or advice you can offer someone that is struggling or feeling stuck?

When they come to Bloom, children and parents will be drawn in by our welcoming environment and will leave with strong roots for dealing with life’s adversities. We believe providing youth with small opportunities for growth can lead to big changes! When taking the steps to start my practice, I gained a lot from the advice and experience of other successful local entrepreneurs, including Brandon and Krista at Kersey’s Kickboxing. Not only do they motivate their members in reaching fitness goals, but they also encourage other entrepreneurs and genuinely want to see them succeed.

Was there something special that you included that other centres may not?

We are the only private practice in the area that specializes exclu-

Lean in. Don’t be afraid of big emotions. We have evolved to have feelings for a reason. They are there to give us signals about what we need. So when you notice you are experiencing a big emotion, be curious about it! What is it trying to tell you? You don’t have to like it or agree with it to accept it. And remember, feelings are just visitors. They come and go. They are temporary. If we spend all of our energy avoiding or distracting ourselves from uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, we have less time to move towards what is truly important to us and we get stuck. Therapy is a great opportunity to set time aside to focus on what you need and come up with actions to live your best life. Parents can model this for their kids and create opportunities for them to lean into their emotions by encouraging them to be mindful and curious.

What is your favourite aspect of Bloom?

The best thing about Bloom

is our physical space and our therapists. Youth who come to Bloom after attending other places have commented that our offices are much more inviting and comfortable. They also say that our therapists make them feel valued and heard. I am inspired by the daily interactions I have with kids and their parents. It’s so amazing to see people taking a proactive approach with their mental health and to witness how resilient kids are! I feel honoured to be a part of kids’ journeys towards living their best life!

What misconception would you clear up or what do you want people to know? Anything else you want people to know?

Mental health IS health! Going to therapy should be as normal as going to the dentist. At the end of the day we are inviting kids and families to join us in ending the stigma around getting mental health treatment, and we want to normalize using therapy as a part of self care. We have daytime, evening, and weekend appointments. Parents who have questions can call us at 519-5679067 or go to our website to book an appointment.

Workout Ideas with Everyday Household Items

No weights, no problem!

One of biggest challenges that we all had to face amongst the quarantine and mandatory shut down is missing Kersey Kickbox Fitness Studio! I’ve always struggled with at home workouts and loved having the in-person atmosphere with the contagious energy and accountability to push me harder and stay motivated.

Even now, our lives get busy and often, there might be days where we can’t make it to the studio for a killer kersey workout.

But we have all heard

the saying “consistency is key”. The more consistently you do something like workout, the easier it becomes, and the more momentum you build up. Eventually, what was once a struggle becomes a habit, and habits are hard to break. That’s why consistency is so important- it is the key to making lasting change.

Dropping a ton of money on equipment for a home gym isn’t necessary to get your sweat on. So many everyday items in your home can serve double duty as workout equipment with some modifications and creativity.

One of my favourite household items to get a sweaty workout in is a jug of laundry detergent! Have you ever noticed laundry soap is conveniently shaped like a kettlebell? The handle makes laundry soap easy to grip, and a fantastic replacement for a 10-pound kettlebell.

Next time you can’t make it to Kersey’s check out this full body workout you could do below!

• Goblet Squat 4x15

• Kettlebell Swings 4x15 (each side)

• Upright Row 4x15 (each side)

• Oblique Crunch 4x15 (each side)

• Single Arm Row 4x15 (each arm)

• Sumo Squat 4x15

• Overhead press & chest press 4x10 (each move)

• Deadlift 4x15

• Squat Pivot 4x20

• Burpee Side Crunch 4x10

• High knees 4x40

meet our Rockstar Coaches

We have a wonderful team of coaches that make each class unique, fun and challenging! Get to know our team...

Our story actually started 35+ years ago :) We used to compete in karate tournaments against each other, when we were 10 years old. We didn’t like each at all lol. Years later we competed on the Metro All-Stars, the #1 sport karate team in the USA. Later competed for TEAM Canada and travelled the world competing. After our competition days were behind us, we started the journey of owning & operating our small business. Plenty of speed bumps along the way, we started Krista Kersey’s Cardio Kickbox, at a gym in Belleriver in 2003. In 2006 we moved to Place Concorde. Krista grew her program to 200 people teaching all of the classes. In 2008 we decided to jump in with both feet and signed a lease, and moved to our Lesperance location. We loved the space, but out grew it. In 2014 we moved to our current location in Forest Glade. We are grateful for our trainers, which has grown to 12! When we are not kickboxing, we love to try out new restaraunts, in Windsor & Detroit. We go for coffee & lunch weekly at Naked Cup to relax. We love travelling with our kids, and trying out new activities. In my free time, I love to snowboard, skateboard. Krista is a hardcore cat mom to “Cali”, and trys to take it for walks.. lol

Hey team! Samantha here! Where do I begin... I feel like I have been a part of the Kersey team my entire life. Though I only joined Kersey Kickbox back in 2016, I trained at Mr. Kersey’s Karate for nearly twenty years where I earned my fourth degree black belt and met Brandon and Krista. When I was looking to level up my training, at the recommendation of some old Kersey coaches, I wandered a couple doors down to Kersey Kickbox and joined the team! I absolutely love kickboxing because, not only did it level up my Karate training, but it also provided me with a healthier lifestyle, a workout where I never feel like I’m working out (it’s far too much fun!), and such a positive community to be a part of. You can also find me behind the desk on Tuesday evenings, or you can join me Wednesdays at 5:15 pm for seven rounds on the bag and a TRX circuit, where there are always killer combos and pop beats to dance along to.

Coach Fran here (The party starter). I’ve been a part of the Kersey Kickbox family for 13 years now and have been coaching for 12. I walked in at 18 years old wanting to lose weight and have fun while doing it. I ended up creating more inner and outer strength than I could’ve ever imagined. I was hooked and continue to keep kicking it with the Kerseys all these years later because it makes me feel like a total badass! I’m the craziest cat lady, I love to explore new places and always seek out the best spots to find food and cocktails. My fiancé is a chef so food and drink is our thing! I love to workout to EDM rave jams or 90s throwbacks. You can find me kicking it on the bag Mondays 7:45pm, Tuesday 9:15am, Friday 12pm, and every other Saturday 9am.

Live Your Best Life Magazine 15 .

Greetings Team Kersey! Coach Darren Here. Though I may not be a ‘party starter’ like our good friend Coach Fran, I do offer a fun and challenging kickboxing class on Friday evenings at 5:15. I can assure you with 100 percent certainty that during my kickboxing class, you will feel a hatred towards me unlike anything you have ever felt before, not because I am mean (because I am not, really, I’m not…), but because I will challenge you to move your body and learn kickboxing combos that you didn’t think you were capable of learning. I have known Krista and Brandon for over 30 years now. I was actually a student of Krista’s many years ago! I have been teaching kickboxing at Kersey’s for over 6 years and have been a member for over 8. When I’m not teaching kickboxing, I enjoy working out with the other instructors in their kickboxing classes. I am also a husband and father of 2 amazing kids whom are very active and keep me incredibly busy! I love coaching and playing hockey, working out and absolutely love discovering new restaurants both here in Windsor and Detroit. Again, I teach a full bag class on Friday evenings at 5:15. Please come out and try not to hate me during out workout!!!

Hi Kersey Crew, my name is Allie! I joined Kerseys Kickboxing in 2014 in the hopes I would lose weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle. I ended up losing the pounds, while gaining muscle, a love for fitness and a group of new friends. I began my journey as a trainer shortly afterwards but took a few years off when I had two children back-to-back. My daughter Elliette is now three and Harvey is two. I went back to being a member when I was on maternity leave with Harvey and have joined the team as a trainer again for the past year. I love Kerseys because not only is it a killer work out, but it is also great for my mental health (I’m a teacher by day). I burn calories and stress when I hit the bag! I am very passionate when I teach the bag/circuit class on Thursdays at 4:00 and Saturdays at 10:15. If you come to my class on Saturday morning you know it’s going to be a party! I have an upbeat top hits playlist, paired with a killer workout and everyone leaves with a smile! Can’t wait to see you in class!

16

I’m Zoe! I have been a member at KKFC since 2016, and I have been a coach since 2018! I kickbox to work both my mind and body! I have found it is the best way to exercise for me. I thrive off of other people’s energy, and a kersey kickbox class is filled with insane amounts of energy. We have such a supportive community here, it’s hard to find that anywhere else. On days where my body needs rest, I love at home online workouts such as yoga or pilates! My favourite workouts include weights! I love our circuit class! Playlists I like to use in my classes are pop or rap. I love 2010’s hits! Right now I currently teach Tuesday’s at 4 pm, and every other Saturday at 9 am!

Hi Kersey’s Fam! Coach B here - the taller Brandon :D I have been a member of Kersey’s for almost 4 years. I became a coach just before COVID. Once the shutdowns ended and we were open I was excited to hit the ground running and be with all of you in real life. I was introduced to Kersey’s from fellow member, Dr. Meagan – she knew that I was looking for a new activity that would incorporate my athleticism, challenge me physically and mentally, and be FUN! After my first class, I was hooked (pun intended). What I grew to love about kickboxing, was that it became a healthy way for me to take out my stress and frustrations - I could just leave it all on the bag. As a former collegiate level athlete, I was longing for an activity that did not just feel like another workout - I wanted something that incorporated functional movement, utilized and built on my skills developed from other sports, and emulated a sense of team or “family”. I found that at Kersey’s. Currently, I teach the Saturday 11:30am Kickbox 8x and the Wednesday 7:45pm Kickbox 8x classes. I look forward to seeing you on the bag!

Live Your Best Life Magazine 17 .

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I’ve been a member at Kersey’s Kickboxing for 6 years and a coach for the last 1.5 years. I grew up doing karate at Mr. Kersey’s Karate School and the skills I learned from there allowed me to make a relatively seamless transition to Kickboxing. I also enjoy traditional and/or functional strength training and the occasional yoga class! My favourite workouts at Kersey’s has to be the Bag/Circuit or Full Bag classes. I currently teach a full bag class on Friday afternoons at 4 pm! There you will find me getting everyone pumped for the weekend with any playlist that features a mix with 156 bpm!

Hey everyone! I’m Amy, and I’ve been a member at Kersey’s for 4 years now. I fell in love with this workout and lifestyle ever since I started. I began coaching with the team for a year and a half now. I kickbox for so many reasons. I grew up dancing my whole life and have found that this was a workout that was almost like a dance: moving around the bag and coordinating your movement… I moved on from having a dancing partner to a bag partner! While it is so much fun, helps you get a full body workout in, it’s also a huge stress reliever for me. I can enter the gym with a million things on my mind but leave it all on the bag and feel so empowered to take on whatever life throws at me when I leave. You leave with not only a gain in bodily strength but mental strength as well. I’m a teacher outside of Kersey’s and I love to inspire and be inspired! My favourite artists to listen to during a kickboxing session are Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent and, of course, Krista’s singing voice. I currently teach 8 Round Bag classes on Mondays at 5:15 and Wednesdays at 6:30. Come on out and feel inspired and empowered together with me!

18

My name is Carl and I’ve been teaching at Kersey for two and a half years now. I’m currently teaching twice a week on Tuesday and Thursdays at the 7:45 pm time slot. I enjoy kickboxing as an instructor because I can see someone’s growth from their first class where everything feels so strange and they’ve almost forgotten how to move their body. To their twentieth class and they’re getting a new high score on the impact scoring and can’t wait to tell me! It’s the little things for me. I stay very active outside of Kersey’s by playing volleyball and I’m also a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In class, I like to focus on proper technique so you can get the maximum amount from your movement while doing it safely and eliminate the risk of injury. Hope to see you in my next class!

My name is Mallori McDonald, I am 23 years old, and I fell in love with Kersey Kickbox Fitness Club the second I walked through the doors. This year is going to be 10 years since I started kickboxing! I was only 14 years old. Krista and Brandon and the entire Kersey crew are extremely welcoming and nothing will ever beat the atmosphere and contagious energy of the members at the Club. I started coaching when I was 18 years old. My favourite class to teach is bag/ weights. I am currently away at school in London, Ontario studying nutrition and dietetics, therefore I am not teaching any classes at the moment. I still come to for an amazing workout whenever I’m home on weekends and I can’t wait to start coaching again in May!

Live Your Best Life Magazine 19 .

Hello my lovely friends, Just wanted to introduce myself to the members that do not already know me. I am Angie and I love being a part of the Kersey Kickboxing Team! A little about me… hmmm.. well I am a mother to (2) beautiful humans, my son Jayden (14) and daughter Peighton (11), and married to my very lucky husband P.J. (just kidding.. I scored on this deal). All of us stay extremely busy with sports. My son plays travel Baseball and basketball, my daughter plays travel Volleyball, basketball and softball. My husband still plays basketball, football and hard ball (baseball), and I play volleyball all year round. I started working out at the club about 1 year prior to being asked to join this wonderful team. As a member I loved everything about this place, the atmosphere, the members, the trainers, the workouts, the results I was getting… EVERYTHING!.. I love being a trainer, I have been a trainer here now for about 8 years, and I love it even more. As a trainer I bring lots of high, positive energy that is contagious to the members, and I also make sure I’m giving you a challenge. I love to hear how you’re doing and what you are focusing on so I can help you achieve your goals. As you now know I keep myself extremely busy, so I train the Thursday 6:30 class, but I am usually seen around the gym working out with all of you in the evenings. If you see me, please introduce yourself and challenge me to remember your name. Fun fact about me.. I’m just a little bit competitive. (insert sarcasm here). The Kersey Kickboxing team is like family to everyone, every trainer here is amazing and all have something special they bring to each of their classes. ( I love them all). Can’t wait to meet you, and help you work at achieving your goals.

Avoid Dangerous Situations

• Not wearing a seatbelt

• Not wearing your bicycle helmet

• Don’t play around construction sites

• Don’t play in abandoned houses

• Not wearing a life jacket

• Don’t play with matches

ABCs of Conflict Avoidance

Over the next two issues, I am going to discuss the ABCs of Conflict Avoidance. These are simple steps that are taught in the martial arts classroom to help keep our kids safe.

A stands for “Avoid Dangerous Situations”

B stands for “Breathe”

C stands for “Communicate with Confidence”

D stands for “Don’t Make a Bad Situation Worse”

Let’s start with “A.” What are some potential dangerous situations that we should avoid?

These are just a few of the answers the kids came up with in the classroom.

• Don’t play around rivers or lakes without adult supervision

• Stay away from firearms

• Stay away from the school yard bully

• Don’t talk to strangers

In order to stay safe, we need to teach our children to avoid potentially dangerous situations whenever possible.

comes our self image.

Who is Looking Back at You in the Mirror?

Did you Know that you can never outperform your Self Image?

Maxwell Maltz said “the self-Image is the key to human personality and human behaviour. Change the self-image and you change the personality and behaviour”

Most people are not aware that the results they are achieving are a direct reflection of their self image. And you cannot outperform your self-image!

Self-talk, the words you use, what you believe are all part of your self image…We are what we think about, going back to childhood and that be-

Have you ever wondered if you could improve your self image… Well, you can! Think of someone you respect or admire.. what qualities do they have that you want to emulate… Go ahead and see yourself with those qualities, embrace that image… Now, what steps can you take to embrace those positive qualities, start with just one…It may be “I speak with confidence.”

And when your image is improved, it will automatically be reflected in your results.

So even though your current results are based on your self image, you have the ability to improve and create a new self image that will ultimately improve your results in multiple areas of your life.

We all have the same choice to either let our lives just happen, or make a conscious decision to guide ourselves choosing the thoughts and actions

that make a positive impact in our lives…and in turn will affect the lives of those that surround us.

As a final note; Affirmations are a Key way of helping to change your self image. So make sure you are affirming to yourself about all the amazing things that you are, not what you think you are not....

If you need an affirmation to get you started, just send me an email. I have seen this in action, it really is amazing and it can work for you too!

And remember to include Vitamin G in your daily health regime.... That’s right - G for Gratefulness....when used in the right way, it has been known to cure many an ailment.

I have been a member since September 2020. I started personal training with Krista in October of 2020!

What kind of music do you prefer to listen to during your workouts?

My Boss Chick playlist has Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, ABBA, Destiny’s Child, Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, Kesha, Lizzo, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Nelly, Pitbull, etc.

What is your favourite...

What do you like most about Kersey Kickbox?

What I like most about Kersey’s is that it’s a family. Krista and Brandon continually go above and beyond to make their members feel valued and important. They know everyone’s names and are always asking questions about your life. The other members are welcoming and supportive. The coaches are knowledgeable and always willing to help. You really feel like you’re a part of something by being there.

What advice would you give someone looking to start kickboxing?

If it’s something you want to do, GO FOR IT! I never had a sport growing up that I loved or was amazing at. I had it in my head that sports just weren’t for me, or that I’m not athletic. I didn’t start kickboxing until 2016, after years of thinking it was something I’d like to do. It turns out I absolutely love it and I’m pretty good, too! So go in, do your best, and don’t worry about what anyone else is thinking!

What are your fitness goals?

Overall I’d say to be healthy, both mentally and physically. I have PCOS and have been on a weightloss journey (112 lbs down!) for the last little while. I cannot articulate how invaluable Krista has been on my journey. I truly feel like she never saw my size but instead saw my potential and dedication; at my highest weight she bragged about the power behind my kicks. Even now, after losing so much weight, she tells me I was ALWAYS hard working. Krista has a gift for finding the good in everyone and bringing it out of them. She is a huge support in my life and I’m so grateful to know her. As well, I’ve been planning my dream wedding for this September at Urban Field House. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted, and I recently bought my wedding dress, too! I want to look strong and like I could kick someone’s butt when I walk down the aisle, so I’ve been hitting Kersey’s 5 days a week! Plus, working out is “me” time that I absolutely need for my mental well-being. It’s a great way to release stress after a long day!
