Coach Sara
Tell us about yourself!
Hello everyone! My name is Sara, and I became a member at Kersey’s just over a year ago. I joined Kersey’s originally as I had just moved to the area and was looking for a fun way to move my body. I loved the different types of classes and the feeling of community when walking through the doors. In the summer I was provided with the opportunity to coach, and I could not say no! When I am not at Kersey’s, you can either find me studying at a coffee shop or at a local farm sanctuary working with animals. I am currently in my last year of the combined Master of Social Work and Juris Doctorate program at the University of Windsor Law School and am excited to join the legal profession this time next year.
Fast forward to when I became a Kersey’s Kickboxing member, the studio quickly became my safe space as I entered university, allow-
ing the flexibility of different class times, getting me to incorporate movement into my routine, and allowing me to keep up my technique all while having fun. Being able to drop the worries of what was going on for just an hour to get on the bag did wonders for my mental and physical health. As things became tougher to juggle as life ramped up, I learned how important it was to carve out time to do something I enjoy.
Navigating Burnout
Self-care is something I focus on daily, and in today’s fast-paced world, professionals and students are often caught in a whirlwind of deadlines, long work hours, extracurricular activities, and social commitments. The constant pressure can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. I personally am no stranger to burn out as law student, due to the intense workload and high expectations. Over half of lawyers currently practicing have experienced burnout, and I have made it my goal to figure out strategies and practices to minimize potential burnout. All strategies listed can be applied to any profession though, not just lawyers!
Recognizing Burnout
Understanding how to recognize burnout and effectively balance life is essential for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. Burnout can manifest in various ways, including chronic fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, inability to sleep, and a lack of motivation. You may just not feel like yourself. It’s crucial to be aware of these signs and acknowledge when it’s time to take a step back!
Strategies for Balance
1. Practice Self-Care: Incorporate activities that promote well-being into your routine. Whether it’s exercising, spending time with friends, or doing your favourite activity, these moments of self-care can recharge your mental batteries and enhance focus.
2. Make time to Move: Ensuring you have even small amounts of physical activity into your daily routine can make a significant difference in
managing burnout. Whether it’s a brisk walk with your dog, or punching a bag at Kersey’s, finding an enjoyable way to move can lead to lasting benefits for your mental and physical health.
3. Set Boundaries: It’s essential to establish boundaries between school/ work and personal time. Ensure you carve out time for relaxation, socializing, working out and pursuing your own interests.
4. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Whether it’s talking to friends, family, or a counsellor, sharing your feelings can provide relief and new perspectives on managing stress.
5. Embrace Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes plans change. Learn to adapt and be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. Flexibility can reduce stress and lead to unexpected opportunities.
Balancing life is an ongoing challenge that requires mindfulness and self-awareness. By recognizing the signs of burnout and implementing effective strategies, you can create a more harmonious and productive environment. Remember, we are all human and it’s okay to take breaks and prioritize your well-being!
