Trainer of the Month Coach Lauren
Tell us about yourself!
Hello everyone! My name is Lauren and I’ve been a part of the Kersey Kickboxing family for over seven years now. I first joined as a member at eighteen, and then started teaching three years ago. However, my journey with the Kersey’s spans back almost two decades ago. I started training just on the other end of the plaza at Mr. Kersey’s Karate School when I was seven years old. Younger me was curious but wary about trying new things, but as I’m sure you can all relate to, the Kersey’s made me feel right at home. Little did I know that I would fall in love with karate and would spend the next thirteen years learning all that I could about self defense, sparring, weapons, and so much more. As I made my way through the ranks, eventually landing at my fourth-degree black belt, I was constantly built up and encouraged by the Kersey community. I truly attribute my martial art journey as what shaped a lot of my values and how I think. My discipline, ability to take on leadership roles, and overall, my gratitude for every opportunity and person that comes my way was built there. I strive to bring these values and skills into my kickboxing classes.
Fast forward to when I became a Kersey’s Kickboxing member, the studio quickly became my safe space as I entered university, allowing the flexibility of different class times, getting me to incorporate movement into my routine, and allowing me to keep up my technique all while having fun. Being able to drop the worries of what was going on for just an hour to get on the bag did wonders for my mental and physical health. As things became tougher to juggle as life ramped up, I learned how important it was to carve out time to do something I enjoy.
At twenty-five, I’m busier than ever with graduate school and working a part-time job, but Kersey’s remains my safe space. I’m the instructor for the full bag class on Friday’s at 4 pm where I get to end my week with all the amazing members I have the honour of teaching. From the moment I walk in the door I get to catch up on how everyone’s doing, and we all have that same goal of putting our all into the workout. One of the best things about being an instructor is not just guiding you through a workout but getting to connect with you and get some insight into your lives. I learn just as much from the members as they learn from us and that’s when I realize we’re all a part of something bigger. I always appreciate all the energy and effort that it takes to come and participate in my classes because I know life can get busy and some days it can be challenging. And I believe I can speak for all the coaches when I say we are always willing to accept you wherever you are at that day.
As we enter September, life begins to gear up again for a lot of people. Kids, teachers, and support workers are back to school and routines are reinstated and revamped. Even if you don’t exactly go by the academic calendar, the changing of the seasons is a good time to reflect on what you’d like the rest of this year to look like. I know personally, as I enter another semester of graduate school everything seems to reset. Most people come in with a lot more tuned focus and drive, but also that can come with a
lot of anxiety as well. Setting yourself up for success looks differently for everyone but coming up with a plan helps getting back into the swing of things easier. That could look like aiming to meal plan on days that tend to be especially packed, creating a task list that you can check items off as the week progresses, or specifically blocking out time for activities you enjoy (i.e. Lauren’s 4 pm 8X class on Fridays wink wink). While certain times of the year can become more overwhelming, it is okay to reevaluate and readjust the goals that you set out for yourself and lean on your community when you need the extra support. What is critical is that you keep pushing forward, try to remain adaptable while giving yourself grace, and really revelling in all wins. Just know that the whole Kersey team will always be in your corner, cheering you on. Let’s tackle this season together – one class, one goal, one win at a time! See you in class!
Lauren’s Personal Goals for the Remainder of 2024
Since I’m encouraging everyone to take advantage of this time to look at their goals, I thought it would be fitting to share some of my personal goals that I hope to accomplish over the rest of the 2024 year.
Half Marathon
My first major goal that I am looking to accomplish is running the Detroit Free-Press Half Marathon in October. If you’ve known me awhile, you’ll know that is quite shocking to hear. I have never been into running, I don’t particularly love it (sorry to those that do), but when a friend of mine caught interest in participating I thought I would rise to her challenge. I took this on to build my mental fortitude and challenge my body in a completely different way. I also appreciate how I can reap the benefits that running has given me and apply it to my kickboxing training. I’ve been sticking to a plan, and I look forward to continuing it and see what I can do on race day!
Book Club
During my undergraduate degree all the studying sucked the fun out of reading for leisure. I’ve made it a goal of mine during graduate school to get back into reading for enjoyment and to read at least one book a month. I also enjoy reading with the season, so I thought to include a short and sweet review of a thriller I enjoyed, and my next thriller read as we enter the fall/spooky season.
Lauren’s Review: The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager (Rated 4.3/5 stars)
Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress, retreats to her family’s remote lake
house to escape the public eye and becomes fascinated with the glamorous couple living across the lake. As she spies on them, she becomes wrapped up in their secrets and lies, leading to a shocking and deadly discovery. The twists and turns of this novel truly blindside you with the atmospheric setting only emphasizing the eerie nature of the story making this book a fast and captivating read.
Lauren’s Next Read: The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden
Noticing the glimmers
A lot of the time when we get wrapped up in our everyday tasks we forget to “stop and smell the roses” so to speak. I have made a conscious effort to try to take more time to find “glimmers” of happiness or appreciate the little things that make me happy throughout the week. These moments help me find gratitude and hope in even the most mundane tasks. Whether it’s walking to my car and observing the environment around me or stopping an extra second to watch the sunset. I find it helps me to connect with myself and appreciate the space that I’m in now without jumping too far ahead into the future.

August’s Events
Themed Classes
In August, our Kersey Kickbox fam jammed to Hanson, the Jonas Brothers and Boyz II Men during our Boy Band Blast, and grooved to the beat during totally radical 80s Kickbox craze.
We love hosting themed nights, but we love everyone dressing the part, laughing and rocking along even more! Keep your eyes peeled so you don’t miss the next themed class.
August’s Events Olympics Competition
This month our Kersey Kickbox crew suited up for a little healthy competition. In events such as longest plank and longest wall sit, our crew channeled their best and really showed off their skills!
We are incredibly impressed by everyone’s strength and progress! Just because the Kersey Olympics are over does not mean we stop setting goals and knocking them down. Keep it up team!
Happy Birthday!
