PARASHAT KI TEITZEI

Candle Lighting: 17:42

Shabbat Ends: 18:32 VISIT TO SMUTS HOUSE

Dear Parents

I have just returned to Johannesburg after the annual SAHISA Conference which took place in White River, Mpumalanga.

We were treated to an exceptional programme with a line up of local speakers ranging from University Professors to inspirational speakers, the director of Transformation, Diversity and Inclusion at Kingsmead College to an Organisational Behaviour Specialist. I want to complement the organisers from the North and North-East regions of ISASA for putting together a wonderful Conference Programme. The theme this year was “Go Wild” and featured local talent. The only speaker from abroad was an Australian speaker, author and Education Consultant by the name of David Bott. We can be so proud of our South African presenters who all spoke with deep meaning and accomplishment.

Our Grade 11 students have enjoyed their week away on Encounter and I was fortunate to spend a few hours with the students on Friday.

The Matrics are coming to the end of their Preliminary Examinations and will be rewarded for their efforts with a wonderful Matric Dance which has been planned for next Monday.

I want to thank Mrs Mairi Nel for her tireless efforts in arranging the Matric Dance as well as Samantha Gomer and her Dance Committee.

In closing, a big thank you to all of the teachers who arranged a host of meaningful outings and activities for the students in Grades 8 to 10 last week.

LETTER TO SOLDIERS

Students wrote letters to soldiers of the IDF which were sent to Israel. We pray for their safety and thank them for their bravery and efforts to bring the hostages home and for their efforts to maintain the safety of the citizens of Israel.

GRADE 11 ENCOUNTER

Grade 11 students enjoyed a week of special activities organized by the DIJE. Educational programs and discussions were held throughout the week, dealing with subjects relating to Israel and the Jewish world. Reflecting on their experience Kira Katz and Aidan Goralsky wrote the following:

Encounter has been a week of self-growth, reflection and learning. We entered the week as proud Zionist Jews and ended the week with more passion and inspiration. The amazing advisors and brilliantly planned sessions, allowed us to engage in debates and learn about other people’s opinions and challenge our own. Our growth hasn’t been limited to only us as individuals but as a Grade who have united and created special connections and friendships with one another. Encounter has allowed us to hear personal stories from inspirational Jewish figures in our community which evoked emotions. Even though tears flowed as the sad stories of 7 October were shared, smiles and simcha filled every room from soulfest at supper to volleyball on the field. Encounter has truly been a life-changing experience and we feel immense gratitude for this incredible opportunity.

FROM THE RABBI

Parashat KI TEITZEI

Candle Lighting: 17:42

Shabbat Ends: 18:32

This week’s Parasha contains more commandments than any other Parasha. It begins by telling us that when we go to fight our enemies, Hashem will protect us. Our Sages explain that this does not only apply to physical enemies. It also applies to each of us, with our own personnel struggles. When we have our own internal struggles, we are not alone in trying to find solutions. Hashem is helping us, albeit sometimes difficult to see.

ELLUL PROGRAMME

On Friday, 13 September, we had our second event of the Ellul learning programme. We had Ice Cream and Inspiration with Rabbi Seeff. Rabbi spoke about how Ellul is the month of relationships and how important it is to have relationships with ourselves, Hashem and other people. Over 30 students attended and everyone walked away feeling inspired. Watch this space for details about next week’s event! Don’t forget that if you attend two or more events you will be entered into a raffle to win awesome prizes!

GRADE 9 VOORTREKKER MONUMENT

The Grade 9 Afrikaans tour to the Voortrekker Monument took place on Monday 9 September. We learnt about the history of our country, including the Great Trek and the history of the Afrikaans People. We saw a demonstration of a cannon firing, and paintings showing scenes from the Great Trek and the Boer War. We also got to climb to the top of the monument and visited the museum underneath, which had many artefacts and the original rough designs for the carvings in the monument. It was really interesting to see another piece of South Africa’s history and to see how it affects us today.

GRADE 10 VISIT TO SMUTS HOUSE

The Jan Smuts house museum excursion was very enlightening and enjoyable. I found it fascinating to see the architecture of his house and to learn about his life. On Smuts Koppie, Jan Smuts grave, there was a beautiful view of his farm and the surrounding farmlands. It was also interesting to learn about how much the landscape has changed over the years. It was an educational experience that taught me a lot about South African history such as the Anglo Boer War and Jan Smuts life.

GRADE 10 HENNOPS HIKE

On Monday 9 September, the Geography and Tourism Departments arranged for the Grade 10s to enjoy a day immersed in nature, embarking on a 5km hike along the Hennops River. Originating near Kempton Park, the Hennops River flows into the Crocodile River just before reaching Hartbeespoort Dam. Despite being one of Gauteng’s largest rivers, it faces significant pollution challenges due to upstream effluent. The students had the opportunity to appreciate the local ecology and explore the tourism potential of the river and its surrounding reserve. Special thanks to Mr Morfis, Ms Borland, and Mr Levin for accompanying our students.

GRADE 9 VISIT TO HOLOCAUST & GENOCIDE CENTRE

On Tuesday 10 September 2024, the Grade 9s visited the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre. We learnt about the atrocities committed in the Holocaust as well as during the Rwandan Genocide. The experience also included self-reflection, identity exercises, and the privilege to listen to Miriam Lazarus’s survival story of the Holocaust. It was a difficult experience to bare witness to. However, these conversations are of the utmost importance to have as we currently grieve the recent tragedy of 7 October , and the plight of the hostages. In our pain and remembrance, we gather ourselves so that we can pave the way for the words never again to one day finally mean NEVER AGAIN.

The "Go Green" Environmental Focus Day was an enriching experience for the Grade 8 students. Fran Blumenthal and Robyn Shapiro from the JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre shared insights on environmental protection, showcasing videos on global warming, their centre's work, and innovative Israeli machines like solar-powered water purification systems. Students learned about eco-warrior Spec Boom and participated in planting veggies and flowers in the school gardens. Group projects were assigned, requiring research and PowerPoint presentations, with the best project to be presented in an assembly and winning a prize.

GRADE 9 SANDWICH DRIVE

On Friday 13 September the Grade 9 students, as part of their community hours, enthusiastically started their sandwich drive for community service. They needed to make sandwiches from 150 loaves of bread in 2 hours. The Grade 9s rose to the challenge and completed all 150 loaves and the sandwiches were also individually packed. There was much laughter and antics as some of them got peanut butter all over their gloves instead of the bread. The sandwiches will be going to a Men's Shelter in Windsor, Acts of Kindness, and a Saturday School in Alexandra.

GRADE 8 ISIZULU & AFRIKAANS FOCUS DAY

On Wednesday 11 September the Grade 8s spent a day of fun and excitement as they learnt about how children and teenagers have fun in townships without access to mobile devices or a screen. We were split into 4 separate groups and were taught many fun games. We were taught a few isiZulu songs, we raced to see which group could fill a bucket the fastest with a sponge. We were also taught how to turn an old broken stocking into a fun new game to play, and so much more. Afterwards we were treated to 4 dances, 1 in Setswana, 1 in isiZulu, 1 was contemporary and 1 was Amapiono. The Grade 8s enjoyed their day and we are all very grateful for this experience.

GRADE 10 CONSUMER STUDIES BAKE-OFF

SOCCER

The Grade 10 Consumers classes were given an exciting opportunity this week to showcase their baking skills und let their imaginations run wild. We got to mix up all the ingredients (and maybe made a bit of a mess), then the real fun started ...decorating! There were sprinkles, colourful icing, and everyone’s cupcakes turned out to be unique and delicious. It wasn’t just about baking; we laughed, got creative, and worked together. At the end, we were all so proud of our remarkable creations. Who knew learning could be so tasty?

Today, Wednesday 11 September, was a blast from start to finish. The excitement began as soon as we boarded the bus and lasted throughout the one-and-a-half-hour journey, with everyone capturing photos of important landmarks and intriguing sights. GRADE 8 OUTING TO KLOOFENDAAL NATURE RESERVE

On Tuesday 10 September, the Grade 8s had the opportunity to visit the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. We spent the morning hiking and learning about nature and our surroundings. Our three groups were guided by tour guides and accompanied by our teachers: Mr Blignaut, Mrs le Roux and Mr Colesky. My group was lucky to have Mr Blignaut, who taught us about an Afrikaans game which we all enjoyed. The Grade 8s appreciated the effort the tour guides put into educating us about our natural resources.
