KEIRA SOROUR HONOURS IN SPORT (TABLE TENNIS)

from the Head

Dear King David High School Victory Park School Community

It is a privilege to step into the role of principal at a school that already feels like home. Having worked alongside many of you, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication, resilience, and spirit that define our community. I am honoured to take on this new responsibility and begin this new chapter with you.

In my time at King David High School Victory Park, I have been consistently inspired by our students’ enthusiasm for learning, our teachers’ commitment to excellence, and the invaluable support from our parents and broader community. KDVP is a unique place that has tremendous energy and vibrancy, a heart and a soul.

My primary aim is to foster an environment where every student not only excels academically to the best of their ability, but also develops a deeper understanding of their values, heritage, and potential. Together, we will continue to nurture our students’ growth in many areas preparing them to thrive in an ever-changing world.

As principal, my vision for the High School is to build on the traditions of what has come before and to continue to achieve excellence, realising the full potential of every student. We plan to transform and ignite new initiatives in different areas such as a Maker Space to equip students with hands-on experiential learning. We have plans in 2025 to take creativity to another level with coding, robotics and 3D printing – WATCH THIS SPACE. This will provide students with opportunities to discover and unlock their specific talents in the diverse range of academic and extra-curricular activities on offer.

This first week of term has been a good one. The Matrics have settled well into writing their final examinations. Grade 8-11 students have been working nicely with their teachers in the last stretch before examinations. We had an excellent Grade 8 2025 Welcome Evening and a Final Awards Ceremony for 2024 where we recognised and celebrated our students on the many varied endeavours that made up our busy and enriching year. Mazal tov and well done to all.

I am excited for the journey ahead and to continue collaborating with all of you to ensure King David Victory Park High School remains a place of excellence, inclusivity, and integrity. Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to what we will achieve together in this new chapter.

Wishing all our students all the best for the upcoming examinations.

GRADE 9 SHAKESPEARE FOCUS DAY

The Grade 9s explored Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in a really fun and interesting way through an amazing focus day! We started by watching “She’s the Man”, a modern-day movie adaptation of the play, and then we saw a live performance of parts of the original play and other works by JAM (Johannesburg Awakening Minds), a company that has trained previously homeless people to act professionally.

This hands-on approach helped us to see how Shakespeare’s themes of love, identity, and disguise are still relevant today. Afterwards, we were treated to a breath, movement and poetry workshop by the actors of JAM where we explored how to perform a sonnet using rhythm.

The day was fulfilling not only because we interacted with literature, but because we worked closely with an inspiring theatre company.

FROM THE RABBI

PARASHAT NOACH

Candle Lighting: 18:07

Shabbat Ends: 18:58

The Torah speaks of Noah “the man”. The Torah is not sharing information regarding his gender, rather we are told that Noah was a “mensch”. This word encapsulates so many good qualities. A “mensch” is a person who conducts themselves with integrity, respect and kindness, goals that we should all strive to attain. In past generations, a person who wanted to attend a prestigious Yeshiva was subject to an interview. The main purpose of the interview was to determine if the person embodied the qualities of being a “mensch”. A person could have been gifted with good academic qualities, but if they did not pass the test of being of “good character”, they were denied a place in the Yeshiva.
