Dear Parents

Welcome back to the third term of the 2024 academic year. I hope that you and the students had a good winter break. The third term promises to as busy as ever and we wish our Matrics well as they prepare for their Preliminary Examinations which commence on 20 August.

There was a lot of holiday activity including the Diller trip to Spain as well as the Habonim trip to Eastern Europe. I want to acknowledge Nicole Beder in Grade 9 who was placed 2nd in the recent SANESA (South African National Equestrian Schools Association) regional competition. I also want to extend a word of congratulations to Keira Sorour in Grade 11 who won the Maccabi MTTC Youth Challenge and is the U19 Girls Champion for Table Tennis.

The SABJE schools have partnered with the organisation called KLIKD on a special curriculum which is being rolled out in certain Grades. Included in the offering is a wonderful WhatsApp group called Klikd in Your Pocket which is available to parents of students in all grades. FROM THE RABBI

PARASHAT MATOT-MASEI CANDLE LIGHTING: 17:24

SHABBAT ENDS: 18:15

This Shabbat we read two Parshiyot, Matot and Masei. This also concludes the reading of the book of Bamidbar. In the Torah reading we are reminded of the importance of keeping ones word. The Torah regards it as a “desecration” if one violates this principle.

We are reminded of the sanctity of speech so many times. The world was created with Hashem uttering words and the Torah was given on Mt Sinai through the medium of speech. The Jewish people responded with words “Na’aseh v’nishma” (we will observe and learn Torah) when they received the Torah on Har Sinai. It is through speech, via Prayer and Torah study that we continue to connect to Hashem. It is for these reasons that speech has to be regarded with such holiness.

Shabbat Shalom RABBI RABINOWITZ
