PET OF THE WEEK

from the Headmaster

Dear Parents

On Sunday 22 September we will be celebrating the 60th birthday of our wonderful Campus. The PTA Committees from the different schools have been hard at work planning a wonderful day packed with events for all to enjoy. We will begin the day with a Brunch for our Alumni in the Primary School Hall starting at 10:00am. There will be a lot of memorabilia, good food and an opportunity to schmooz with fellow classmates through the decades. This will be followed by the more formal proceedings in the High School. The students from Grade 8 to Grade 11 are all expected to attend this formal Assembly in full school uniform at 12:30pm. Thereafter, we will be able to move up to the High School fields to enjoy an afternoon Carnival with food stalls, games and activities and entertainment. A Colour Run will leave the Primary school Field at 2:30pm and the afternoon is expected to wind up between 4:30pm and 5:00pm. I look forward to seeing all the Parkers out on what promises to be a fantastic day of celebration for our special VP Community.

In closing, Mazal tov to Daniel Brenner for making it through to the second and final round of the Wits Mathematics Challenge which will take place on Wednesday 18 September.

HEBREW / JUDAICA

TALK BY IRIS

On Tuesday, 27 August, Grades 10 and 11 attended a talk by Mrs Iris Chaim. Iris is the mother of one of the hostage’s who was inadvertently killed by the IDF during the war in Gaza. She spoke passionately about the life and achievements of her son, Yotam. She stressed how important it is to get out of the deepest sadness and to continue with daily surviving. Her speech was motivating and we were all privileged to hear her share her story.

DILLER TEEN FELLOW PROGRAM

A month ago we returned from our International Diller Seminar that was held in Córdoba Spain. I think I speak on behalf of all of us, when I say that seminar was one of the greatest experiences we have ever been a part of. We were involved in topical conversations, discussed current issues, toured the city and established friendships and relationships that will last us a very long time.

We spent a week with over 600 Diller Teen Fellows from 16 different communities around the world.

From that Monday to Sunday, every moment and every second was jam packed with exciting stories, engaging activities, important conversations and impactful news.

On day one we met our Israeli Cohort Partnership, Beit Shemesh. The fellows that are a part of the that cohort are some of the best, like minded and compassionate individuals that you’ve ever met. Their never ending energy and excitement kept us going throughout that week. It was unbelievable for us to see how well we got on with one other from the first minute we met them. We built unbreakable bonds with them and developed impactful relationships with them and ourselves commonly referred to as “Bashburg”

We spent time touring the old city where the Rambam once lived to exploring one of Spain’s oldest Mezquitas. We travelled 3 hours to Granada to see the amazing views of the Alhambra Palace. One of the most impactful days was the day dedicated to October 7th in which the hotel was converted into a museum. We heard personal stories from Israelis who have lost loved ones and hearing this from them was extremely eye opening, emotional and meaningful.

One thing that really impacted me was our final session as a Joburg cohort on the Saturday night before we left. We sat in a circle and passed around a small box that contained the Israeli Flag, the South African Flag, the Diller Teens Fellows Symbol and the last item, was a mirror. This mirror gave me the chance to really look retrospectively at the person I was at the beginning of our Diller year and the person I have now become. That experience we shared together is something I will never forget.

It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Kira

FROM THE RABBI

Parashat RE’EH

Candle Lighting: 17:37

Shabbat Ends: 18:27

Our Parasha this Shabbat addresses a fundamental concept in Judaism, namely freechoice.

We are all granted the free will to choose between good and bad. Hashem gives us advice, but we have to act on that advice. This has broader implications than simply deciding whether or not to observe a mitzvah.

Sometime situations arise which we have no control over. We do however have control as to how we respond to these situations.
