INTERNAL ISRAEL QUIZ

PET OF THE WEEK

Dear Parents

I am delighted to announce that six of our students are through to the final round of the Israel Quiz which will be held on the evening of Sunday 29 September. The six students who have made it through to the final round of the Israel Quiz are Aimee Shull (G11), Atara Haberfeld (G10), Daniel Segal (G10), Jaedone Zaken (G10), Jenna Hodes (G10) and Joshua Woolf (G10). Our school representation represents 60% of the finalists. We are the defending champions for the last two years and hope to bring the trophy home once again. Today, we had our Internal Israel Quiz during the school assembly. Mazal tov to Atara Haberfeld (Bronze Medal), Aimee Shull (Silver Medal) and Daniel Segal (Gold Medal) our winner this year.

In closing, at a recent meeting of our Awards Committee, some changes to the constitution were made and ratified.

It is important to note that the Awards Committee has ratified two amendments to the Awards Constitution of the school in an effort to bring about greater alignment of criteria between different activities.

Firstly, the President’s Award. Awards will be made by the school as follows:

Bronze Medal – Bar Scroll

Silver Medal – Half Colours

Gold Medal – Full Colours

Implementation date: 21 August 2024

Secondly, the Johannesburg Junior Council. Awards will be made as follows: In addition to the mayor being recognized with a Full Colours award, the two students selected to represent the school on Council, regardless of their portfolio, will be recognized with a Half Colours award.

Implementation date: 21 August 2024

No retrospective awards will be made.

Parashat EIKEV

Shabbat Ends: 18:24

In this week’s parasha, Moshe continues with his farewell address and gives the nation a formula for survival. He states “Now, o Israel, what does Hashem, your G-d, ask of you? Only to fear Hashem, your G-d, go in all his ways and to love him, …..”

The Talmud asks a very insightful question. Moshe uses the term “only”. Is fearing G-d such a simple task? The answer given is “yes”, if a person surrounds themselves with good and wholesome people, our love and commitment to Torah will be easily attained.

SOCCER MIKOLOT:

JOSHUA WOOLF PARTICIPATES IN AUSTRALIA

Mikolot - voices of the future’ is an Australian run Jewish public speaking initiative with the objective of uniting Jewish teenagers from around the world. I was fortunate enough to have successfully progressed as a finalist in this year’s competition: and wow! What an incredible experience.

Welcomed at the airport by friendly smiles and faces of the Moriah College ‘EDGE’ team (their equivalent of The DIJE) I felt a sense of pride in my Jewish identity never before experienced in my entire life.

From the guided tours of Moriah’s Campus to the heartwarming hospitality of Sydney’s Jewry: I was on top of the world!

It was lovely encountering former King Davidians and friends…80% of the teachers and students have a connection - in some way - to South Africa! It felt incredibly exciting when I was greeted with an all too familiar ‘howzit’.

However, it is great to be back home. The friendships and memories created on this adventure will be held with me for a lifetime.

SOCCER GRADES 8 AND 9 VISIT THE SCI-BONO MUSEUM

Our visit to the Sci-Bono Centre on Tuesday 20 August, was incredible. We explored interactive exhibits on science and technology, with the highlight being a science show where we participated and learned about different gases. The hands-on science experiments were fascinating, especially the electrical circuit displays. The centre's focus on innovation and discovery truly inspired me, making me see science in a new light. It was an unforgettable experience that deepened my curiosity about how science shapes our world in so many ways.

SOCCER GRADE 11 SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

Our recent trip to Spirit of Adventure was both challenging and rewarding. Under the hot sun, we tackled various obstacle courses which taught us valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork. The heat tested our endurance, but it also brought out the best in us as we encouraged one another to push through. Each challenge helped us grow, not just as individuals but as a united group, preparing us for future obstacles in life.
