Dear Parents
The Winter Examination session is upon us. Today our Matric students will write Life Orientation and from Monday the rest of the seniors in Grades 10 and 11 will begin. For the Matrics, these exams constitute their mini-Prelims which we believe are an important “warm-up” and preparation and training for the Prelims which are written in August. Sadly, many schools have phased out the mini-Prelim examination cycle from their Matric year in order to gain more teaching time. At the end of the day, it is a delicate balancing act between allocating time for examination sessions and taking away from teaching time. In our opinion, the value of writing this important set of trial papers outweighs the teaching days that are sacrificed.
The Grade 8 and Grade 9 students will continue with regular lessons next week. They will attend a series of revision and examination preparation workshops in the next week and then write examinations in their four Core subjects in the final week of the term. In the second term we write examinations up to and including the last day of the term. A reminder that the Semesterised Subjects and the Arts & Culture electives are assessed outside of this examination cycle.
In closing, the students will be casting their online votes for our Grade 11 students who have indicated that they are available to stand for the incoming Student Representative Council for the 2024/2025 leadership cycle. My grateful thanks go to Mrs Glanvill-Miller as the Director of the Leadership Programme in the school for preparing the students to this point. We use a weighted ballot system in the school and make sure that the voice of the student body is recognised in electing their leaders.

SHAVUOT
The Jewish Studies Department arranged a delicious preShavuot event for the students to learn about the tradition of eating dairy on this Chag. Rabbi Rabinowitz spoke about the origins of this custom, which is followed by Jews around the world. Afterwards, the students made their own crunchy ice creams, with Mrs Munnell and Mrs Katz, adding lots of exciting toppings. It was an enriching experience for everyone who came by!
GOOD LUCK FOR MATRICS
The Hebrew and the Jewish Studies Departments wish our Matrics good luck for the Mini Prelim Exams.

PARASHAT BEHA’ALOTCHA Candle Lighting: 17:07 Shabbat Ends: 17:59
In the Parasha, Aaron is commanded to light the Menorah. The Menorah had seven branches and its’ flame was never allowed to burn out.
It was lit on a daily basis. The constant flame has many teachings associated with it. One idea is that the Menorah represents the study or Torah. The mitzvah of limud Torah, the study of Torah, is a constant daily requirement. It is not a mitzvah to be observed once a week like Shabbat, or once a year like fasting on Yom Kippur. It is a requirement to learn Torah on a regular basis.
The Ner Tamid, the light in Shul by the ark reminds us of the eternal light of the Menorah.

GR 9 FRENCH LUNCH DATE
The Grade 9 French students are learning about food and how to order at a restaurant, and what better way is there to learn than by putting their knowledge into real life practice?
They enjoyed a lunch date at Schwarma Bar in Fairmount, owned by French speaker Eliezer. The students got to order and ask for the bill in French. They also enjoyed lots of chatting with Eliezer, who was a superb host.
