Mazal Tov to the SRC 2024/25. Below is the Head Girl: Raquel Meyerowitz and Head Boy: Aidan Goralsky

Dear Parents

On Friday we had the Induction Ceremony for our incoming SRC. This group of 16 students will be leading the school going forward. As I mentioned in my speech on Friday, this is a talented Grade of students and there will be plenty of opportunity for leaders to excel beyond the group of 16 who have been elected to serve. Mazal tov to an outstanding group.

In closing, I want to congratulate Saul Ephron and Keshav Singh for being selected to represent Gauteng Table Tennis in the U19B team and Keira Sorour for being selected for the U19A team.

FROM THE RABBI

PARASHAT VA’ETCHANAN SHABBAT NACHAMU

Candle Lighting: 17:31

Shabbat Ends: 18:21

Many well-known parts of the Torah are found in this week’s parasha, the Ten Commandments and the first paragraph of the Shema. We also see the power of Tefillah, of prayer. In times of joy and in times of sadness Jews have always turned to G-d to either ask for help or to sing Hashem’s praises. During Temple times, sacrifices were the main form of communicating with G-d. Today prayerhasreplacedsacrifices.

This Shabbat is called Shabbat Nachamu the Shabbat of comfort. It gets its name from the opening words of the Haftorah, from the book of Isaiah, “comfort ye, comfort ye my people.” The Prophet is commanded to comfort the people and to proclaim the restoration of Jerusalem.

Shabbat Shalom RABBI RABINOWITZ

SIBIKWA ARTS CENTRE PRODUCTION OF 1789

From time to time an opportunity arises for students to have an excursion which covers a topic studied in more than just one subject. On Wednesday 14 August, the Grade 10 and 11 Dramatic Arts Classes and the Grade 10 History Classes, experienced the Sibikwa Arts Centre production of 1789 performed (with the audience on stage with the French Revolution characters - even more topical with this year's Paris Olympics) on the Nelson Mandela stage at The Joburg Theatre Complex. Phyllis Klotz, veteran

SA Theatre maker, producer, director, writer and mentor, presented a talk for our students prior to the show and this ensured a rich, engaging journey of history, storytelling, theatrical magic and reflection on our very own country and its challenges. Thank you to Mrs. Gruzd, Mrs. GlanvillMiller, Mrs Levin, Mrs. Kattan, Mr. Spanoudes and one and all involved for such a memorable treat!
