Noah Aiello (Davey) is a Junior at Portage Central high school whose passion for theatre started during seventh grade. He has performed in a plethora of different shows at different theatres and has enjoyed them all! Some of Noah’s favorite roles he has played have been George in Our Town at PCHS and most recently Davey in Newsies. “I love theatre because of the great people you meet and the experiences you have,” Noah says.
Sarah Aiello (Nun/Bowery Beauty) has been in many Civic shows since a young age, a few being Beauty and the Beast, Warpaint and Madagascar -- she is happy to be back! Her favorite role to date is Olaf in Disney’s Frozen Jr. (even though it never got to run). She is a sophomore at WMU getting her BMA and enjoys being in the group, Gold Company. One of her favorite parts of this show is watching her brother grow as a performer and seeing him take the stage! Special thanks to Anthony, Marie, Sara and Mike for the incredible work they have put in and how much they’ve made this cast feel like family!
Logan Awe (Jack Kelly), a Kalamazoo native, is no stranger to the Civic stage -- audiences will remember him as the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Rudolpho in Matilda, and a member of the ensemble in Elf, War Paint, and Hello, Dolly! Logan is a medical massage therapist by trade and works out of Health Choice Chiropractic Center LLC. Having met his wife Emily in the Civic’s 2018 production of Hello, Dolly!, the Civic will always be a special place for him. Logan would like to thank the entire cast and production crew for making this his most memorable Civic experience.
Christopher S. Blades* (Nunzio/Ensemble) is thrilled to be making his Kalamazoo Civic Theatre debut in Disney’s Newsies. He is originally from the Chicago-land area where he grew up dancing and performing on stage with the Joffrey Ballet Chicago. Some of his favorite theatre credits are Disney’s Mary Poppins (Robertson Aye), Mamma Mia! (Eddie), Joseph… (Asher) and Miss Saigon (Ensemble/ u/s Thuy). While not on stage he works at Advia Credit Union as a Member Contact Specialist and a travel agent at Goofy Getaways. He would like to thank his friends and family for all their love and support!
Liam Braun (Henry) a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and recent graduate of Loy Norrix High School, Liam was an avid participant of the theater department, taking part in productions such as Something Rotten, Mamma Mia, Pippin, And Then There Were None, and Twelfth Night. Liam is currently attending Western Michigan University, pursuing a degree in Environmental Sustainability. Despite choosing not to study theater at school, Liam plans on continuing his passion for acting as a hobby throughout Southwest Michigan. He’d like to thank his friends and family for their continued support, as he couldn’t have done it without them.
Elizabeth Brubaker* (Buttons) is thrilled to be making her Civic debut. She is no stranger to the stage in the Kalamazoo area, having been involved in many shows around town. Some of her recent credits are Director and Choreographer of High School Musical JR (Portage Central Middle School), Choreographer of Addams Family JR (Portage West Middle School), Soupy Sue in Urinetown (Portage Central High School), Ensemble in Mamma Mia! (Portage Central High School), Ensemble in The Wizard of Oz (Center Stage Theatre), and Choreographer of Willy Wonka JR (Portage Central Middle School). She is so beyond grateful for this opportunity and so thankful to have people in her life who constantly support her.
Jordan Bruner (he/him/his) (Brooklyn Newsie/Understudy – Davey) is a Kalamazoobased actor/composer. This is the third show at the civic that Jordan has done. In 2020, He was seen as Jon in Tick, Tick... Boom! And would've been seen as Kristoff in Frozen Jr until its early cancellation due to COVID-19. Academically, Jordan is currently starting at Western Michigan University pursuing a BM in Music Composition. Before he graduated from Portage Northern High School in 2020, Jordan was a regular on the stage, such as Thenardier in Les Miserable, and Lancelot in Spamalot. Jordan is very excited to perform in his first show back after the pandemic!
Peter Bryant (Elmer) is excited to be a part of Newsies and has loved working with the talented cast and crew. Some of his previous experiences include Michael in Elf at the Kalamazoo Civic, and John Webster in Shakespeare in Love at the GRCT. Peter enjoys soccer, travel, and swimming. He wants to thank all the Civic staff for the coaching and support.
Josh Cavalli (he/him/his) (Delancey Brother) is a freshman at Portage Northern High school, and a young theater enthusiast who has performed in many shows, including two at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. He is incredibly excited to be part of the Civic’s 94th season and hopes to continue acting here for years to come.
Asa Davis (he/him/his) (Joseph Pulitzer) is excited to be back on the Civic stage after a 15year hiatus. Previous Civic credits include The Music Man, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and The Wizard of Oz. He is especially proud to be sharing the stage with his oldest son, Braeden, and hopes to do many more shows with his family. In his free time, Asa enjoys playing ping pong and brewing kombucha. “All my love to Julie and the BROs!”
Braeden Davis (he/him/his) (Finch) is currently a junior at Loy Norrix and has lived in Kalamazoo his whole life. His favorite role he’s performed is Ben/Lisa in Disaster! at the Barn Theatre. Other theatre credits include Shakespeare in Something Rotten! (Loy Norrix High School), Les in Newsies (Barn Theatre), Hans in Frozen (Kalamazoo Civic Theatre), and Cat in the Hat in Seussical, Jr. (Kalamazoo Civic Theatre). Braeden would like to thank his parents, Julie and Asa Davis, for getting him into theatre, and his best friend, Noah, for always being there for him.
Ricky DeVore* (Race) is a Battle Creek native and has performed at many local and community theatres around Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties. Hoping to make a career out of his passion, he is currently exploring Musical Theatre Performance programs. Recent credits include Leaf Coneybear in ACT II’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in Albion (May 2022) and as the ogre himself in Shrek: The Musical last October at the Three Rivers Community Players. Earlier this summer, Ricky music directed a high school production of High School Musical with the Marshall Civic Players. Ricky would like to thank his parents for their immense support.
August Gallagher (Seitz/Ensemble) has had the pleasure of being in many roles growing up, from Berger in Hair, to Lane from The Importance of Being Earnest. He attended Columbia College Chicago to study theatre, and played Patrick in Zero Positive. He also portrayed the role of Davidson in Mary Stewart. Recently he was Sunny Malone in the Civic production of Xanadu.
Vincent Giannecchi* (he/him/his) (Major/Mr. Jacobi) is making his Civic debut in this production. Past theatre credits include You Can’t Take It with You (Mr. Depinna/Donald), The Importance of Being Ernest (Rev. Canon Chasuble) and Romeo and Juliet (Romeo/Mercutio/Apothecary), all performed at Cornerstone University. Interests other than theatre include history, gaming, and being with friends. “I want to thank my wife, Kayla, for her support and pushing me to continue with my passions.”
Sydney Harrison* (Specs) is making her Civic debut in this production. A Musical Theatre Major alum from Harrison School for the Arts, her past theatre credits include Go-to-hell Kitty in Chicago (Center Stage Theatre), Old Woman in Sunday in the Park (Harrison School for the Arts), Ensemble in Sweeney Todd (Lakeland Community Theatre), Ensemble in Into the Woods (Harrison School for the Arts), and her favorite, Sister Mary Robert in Sister Act (Center Stage Theatre). Interests other than theatre include disc golf and weightlifting.
Nate Heid* (Romeo) is currently making his Civic debut in this production, though he has been seen on the stage before. Past theatre experiences include Karl in Big Fish and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, both at Portage Center High School. Interests other than theatre include running, songwriting, singing, playing acoustic guitar, soccer, board and card games, going to church, and hanging out with his friends and family.
Avery Horrigan* (they/them) (Ike) plays a Newsie in this production and it’s their second show. Avery moved to Kalamazoo from Virgina in 2019 and is a freshman at Gull Lake High School. They also work in the Civic costume shop as an intern.
Chris Jackson* (Delancey Brother) is making his Civic debut in this production. Past theatre experience includes Matilda (Mrs. Trunchbull) and Into the Woods (Mysterious Man), both at Mendon High School. When not on stage, he works as an IT Assistant and in his free time enjoys video games, music, cars, and computers.
Carly Koch* (Katherine Plumber) is a singer, dancer, songwriter and actress. Favorite roles include Anya in Anastasia at Portage Central High School, as well as Small Alison in Fun Home and Young Judy Garland in Beyond the Rainbow at Farmers Alley Theatre. Carly is always delighted to perform and believes in the power of the arts to bring joy and love to the world. She dedicates this performance to her Nonni, for being her greatest and strongest influence.
Yacine Lo* (she/her/hers) (Brooklyn Newsie/Scab #1) is currently making her Civic debut in this production, although this isn’t her first time on stage. Theater credits include The Theory of Relativity, Something Rotten, And Then There Were None, and her favorite, Pippin, where she performed the role of Player, all at Loy Norrix High School. She was also a part of Kindleberger Arts’ production of Mamma Mia. “Thank you to my parents for supporting me and getting me to rehearsal, as well as all my friends for encouraging me to continue pursuing theatre and having fun.”
Evie Meskin* (Les) found her “spark” at the Civic this past Spring. She auditioned for her first play a week after starting classes at the Civic’s Academy of Theatre Arts, earning a position backstage in the Civic Youth Production of The Descendants. That’s where she fell in love with the theater. She is making her onstage debut in Newsies, playing the fearless, pint-size charmer, Les, which couldn’t be more appropriate for Evie. She wants to thank her dad for his voice coaching, her mom for waking up at 5AM to practice choreography, and her brother Caleb for running lines with her. She is so excited to be a part of this musical!
Laurie Nic (Nun/Ensemble) is originally from Bailey, Michigan but has lived in the Kalamazoo area for 32 years. Some of her past Civic credits include Willy Wonka (Mrs. Beauregarde), Fiddler on the Roof (Grandma Tzeitel), Songs of the Sixties, and The Great American Songbook. She has also appeared in the Ensemble of Kindleberger Arts’ production of The Wizard of Oz. In her free time, Laurie enjoys traveling, sewing, singing in Blendings ensemble and as a soloist, and volunteering.
David Noyes (Gov. Teddy Roosevelt/Ensemble) David has performed in many different theaters in and around Kalamazoo. His most recent Kalamazoo Civic performances were during the 2019-2020 season in Matilda as Mr. Wormwood also in Elf as Santa. David has played many other characters here including Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, Jean Shepherd in A Christmas Story the Musical. His favorite roles at the Civic are Mr. Smee in Peter Pan, and George in Of Mice and Men. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” -T.Roosevelt
Maggie Paloucek (Mush) is excited to be back on the Civic stage again! She made her Civic debut in 2018 as Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and in 2019 was a part of the ensemble cast in Elf. More recently, Maggie has been seen performing at the Kindleberger Arts Summer Festival as Lisa in Mamma Mia (2021) as well as her recent role of Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz (2022). Sometimes you can also catch Maggie as a Guest Teaching Artist working with kids and adults through The Academy. She is so grateful to be working with such a talented group of performers for this show!
Elijah M. Parker (Tommy Boy) made his civic debut in 2019 with Matilda the Musical Newsies is his second Civic show. He's been doing theatre since 6th grade and is now helping produce theatre at Portage North Middle School. Elijah takes an interest in theatre both on stage and behind the scenes, as he markets and runs social media for Northern High Schools Drama Department. He has appeared in several local productions and hopes to continue his passion in upcoming years. Elijah thanks the mentors that have helped him learn the ins and outs of theatre, as he has grown immensely as a performer, producer, and marketing coordinator.
Meghan Peot* (she/her/hers) (Brooklyn Newsie/Scab #2/Bowery Beauty) is a senior at Hackett Catholic Prep. She began participating in theatre as a crew member in her freshman year of high school, then decided to begin performing later in her junior year. Outside of the theatre, Meghan loves playing and teaching piano. She is also part of her school’s jazz band, Student Leadership Team, National Honor Society, and is a member of the Jeter’s Leaders program. She is so grateful for her family and friends who always support her and her many passions. Newsies is Meghan’s first musical and her Civic debut.
Rick Place* (Wiesel) is ecstatic for his first theater performance to be the Civic's production of Newsies. Rick is native to the Kalamazoo area, having grown up in Portage. He is the principal of an alternative high school in Vicksburg, and his passions include the Chicago Cubs, golf, and craft beer. He also loves spending time with his wife Sarah and their two kids, Abby (5) and Eli (3).
Aaron Potter* (he/him/his) (Bunsen/Ensemble) is a high school English teacher and theatre director at Kalamazoo Christian High School. This is his first production with the Civic and he is very excited, especially because it’s his first time acting alongside his lovely wife, Andi, who is playing a nun and a Bowery Beauty (which is a good description of her). Aaron has acted in numerous productions throughout his schooling including Once Upon a Mattress, Meet Me in St. Louis, Love’s Labour's Lost, and The Philadelphia Story. As a theatre director, he has had the pleasure of directing You Can’t Take It with You, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Much Ado About Nothing, and Annie.
Andi Potter* (Nun/Bowery Beauty, Ensemble) is elated to be making her Civic debut in one of her all-time favorite musicals! She is a Grand Rapids native who has enjoyed spending the past year getting to know Kalamazoo as her new home, especially in her job as a secretary and in discovering all the lovely coffee shops and bookstores in the city. Her favorite past shows were Beauty and the Beast and Bye Bye Birdie Andi would like to thank her husband, Aaron (Bunsen), for encouraging her to "seize the day" and try out for this show. Sharing the stage with Aaron and the whole cast has been a dream come true! Enjoy the show!
Kate Roelof (Mike) is a senior in high school. Some of her roles at the Civic include ensemble in Elf the Musical and Susan Parks in Billy Elliot. She has also performed at Center Stage Theatre and Kindleberger Arts. Kate has been dancing since she was three years old and is very excited to be a part of this production.
Lexy Seelye* (she/her/hers) (Splasher) is currently making her Civic and performance debut in this production. Born and raised in Kalamazoo, she has 13 years of extensive dance training from Excel Dance Center and is currently a vocalist on the Connections Community Church’s worship team. Lexi is a barista, flower farmer, and works at Seelye Ford of Kalamazoo as a Customer and Community Relations Coordinator.
Daniel Schubkegel* (Crutchie) is making his Civic debut in this production. Past theatre experiences include Junk Man in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Homeschool Performing Arts), Artie in Lost in Yonkers (Farmers Alley Theatre), Tom of Warwick in Camelot (Farmers Alley Theatre), young Josh Baskin in Big the Musical (The Barn Theatre), and Drake in Honk, Jr. (Center Stage Theatre). In his free time, Daniel enjoys playing violin and volleyball. “Thanks to my big musical family for leading the way!”
Ali Sharief (Spot Conlon/Understudy – Jack Kelly) is happy to be returning to the Civic! A native of the zoo, Ali started on stage at ten years old. Performing in over 100 productions, his recent credits include Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast (Center Stage), Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia! (What A Do Theatre Company), Jason Posner in Wit (Great Escape Stage Company) and touring with 50 Shades of Shakespeare (Bare Backstage Productions). His favorite Civic credits include Billy Elliot (Mr. Braithwaite) and Hands on a Hardbody (Jesus Pena). When not on stage, Ali plays on the Pro Tour for Pickleball. “Big thanks to my friends and family for their love and support.”
Todd Spratt (Snyder/Ensemble) is a lifelong resident in the Kalamazoo area and is a staff pharmacist with Bronson Health Systems. He is thrilled to be participating in this year's show of Newsies. He has performed a variety of roles at the Civic ranging from Billy Elliot's father to a dancing waiter in Hello Dolly. He'd like to give a special thanks to the Civic for allowing him these wonderful opportunities and to his lovely wife for her patience and support in allowing him to pursue his passion for theater.
Carlee Stoker (she/her/hers) (Hannah) received her B.A. at Western Michigan University with a concentration in Dance, Theatre, and Child Development. Past Kalamazoo Civic Theatre credits include Waitress #1/Ambrosia in Rock of Ages, Patricia Fodor in Crazy for You, Ensemble in Hello, Dolly!, and Ensemble in War Paint. She also recently appeared in the ensemble in Kindleberger Summer Festival’s production of The Wizard of Oz “This is my 9th show at the Civic...almost double digits! Thanks to my amazing family and friends for always supporting my love of The Arts!”
Ellen Terzino* (she/her/hers) (Brooklyn Newsie/Scab #3/Understudy - Katherine) is excited to be part of this production! Ellen is a junior at Loy Norrix high school and in her free time loves to be in as many shows as possible, read and play guitar. Ellen recently played Belle in Beauty and the Beast (Center Stage Theater) and Bea in Something Rotten (Loy Norrix High School). Some of her favorite roles she’s played are Sophie in the Kindleberger Arts Festival production of Mamma Mia and being in The Barn Theater’s production of Big as a member of the Ensemble. She would like to thank her wonderful parents and the educators who have always believed in and supported her theatrical journey.
Connor Tuin* (Albert) is making his debut performance with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre in Disney’s Newsies. He has had an amazing time creating new friendships with the cast. Connor has appeared in other performances at KCHS, his most recent being Rooster in the musical Annie. When not on stage, Connor enjoys golfing, playing piano and hanging out with friends. Wendy Wheeler* (Medda Larkin) has been teaching voice and piano for over 20 years. Wendy holds a BA in vocal music from Saginaw Valley State University and a Master of Music in Education and Vocal Performance from Western Michigan University. Wendy's resume includes a variety of educational programs, theater work in many venues, and private vocal instruction for music schools, colleges, and her private studio. She works as a teaching artist with the Civic’s Academy of Theatre Arts. She is excited for her first Civic performance, joining fellow teaching artists and young students. Wendy lives in Portage with her college age son, Nick, who studies Elementary Education and French at her alma mater, WMU.
Alyssa Zamora* (JoJo) graduated from WMU with a BFA in Music Theatre Performance and is currently at the Radiant School of Ministry. She teaches with Education for the Arts in Kalamazoo and is excited to be on stage again! Her favorite roles are #25 (The Wolves, WMU) and Sonia Sotomayor (She Persisted, Farmer’s Alley). She would like to thank her friends, family, RSM, and the creative team for the opportunity to tell JoJo’s story through song, dance, and cartwheels. She is an arts advocate and passionate about loving people the way Jesus does. “...Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31.
Mike Artis (Director of Volunteers/Stage Manager) Prior to becoming the Director of Volunteers for the Civic, Mike was the Production Stage Manager joining the Civic staff in 2005. For years before that Mike was a volunteer that spent much of his spare time here in and crewing shows. In addition to working behind the scenes on more shows than you could count, he has also appeared on stage in State Fair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Full Monty (his favorite). Some of Mike's favorite shows that he has stage managed are Ragtime, Avenue Q, Anything Goes, 33 Variations, Doubt and Les Miserables.
Emily Awe (Dresser) is a Kalamazoo native and no stranger to the Civic stage. Audiences will remember her as the Acrobat in Matilda, Alex in Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods, and a member of the ensemble in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Elf. Emily works as the library clerk at Portage Central Middle School and is a forensics coach for Portage Central High and Middle. She met her husband Logan while being a dresser for Hello, Dolly! in 2018, and names that as her favorite Civic experience to date. Emily would like to thank the entire cast and production crew for making this show such a special experience!
Stacey Bartell (Properties Master) joined the Civic staff in 2005 and was named Properties Master in 2008. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theatre from Lehigh University, she served as the Technical Director for the Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville, New York as well as Scenic Carpenter for Production Resource Group in New Windsor, New York. Stacy has created stunning and imaginative props for many Civic productions. Some of her favorite builds include: Smaug the Dragon for The Hobbit, the school desks for The Hundred Dresses and Chip s cart for Disney's Beauty and the Beast JR.
Brian R. Bay (Follow Spot Operator) is a longtime resident of Kalamazoo and a veteran Civic volunteer, having participated in a dozen shows backstage, onstage and pre-production over the 39 years he's been involved here. His favorite Civic roles are Dennis Dupree in our 2018 production of Rock Of Ages, as Ensemble/Soloist for 2018's Sounds of the 60's and Annas in our 1996 production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His past shows include Taming of the Shrew (Gremio) and Annie (Bert Healy/Harold Ickes) at the Civic, and Danny McGuire in Xanadu (Kellogg Community College). Most importantly, he met his wife of 29 years during the 1987 production of The Music Man and enjoys doing shows with her.
Ryan C. Burke (Scenic Carpenter/Floor/Fly Crew) has worked with the Croswell Opera House, the Goodman Theatre, and the Tibbits Opera House. Ryan is a graduate of Siena Heights University, where he received his BA in Theatre and Speech Communications. Isaac Byler (Assistant Stage Manager/Floor Manager) Isaac has been on the crew of many Civic Youth Theatre shows, most recently as an ASM for Seussical JR. He discovered his love of theater at a young age through the Civic's Academy of Theatre Arts, where he has especially enjoyed the summer musical theatre camps the last several years. As a 7th grader, Isaac plays flute in the school band and is in his 3rd year with Kalamazoo Children's Chorus. He also enjoys baking, cooking, and keeping up with his favorite Broadway stars.
Elvin E. East (Light Board Operator) has been involved in over sixty shows at the Civic over the past 16 years and is a talented stage manager and lightboard operator. His favorites have been the Shakespeare productions, Reader's Theatre, and Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical. When not at the Civic, he enjoys mysteries and raising donkeys. "Thanks to my wonderful wife, Pat Erwin, for her support and my freedom."
Joni Edwards (Dresser) enjoys her time spent at her home away from home. She has been involved at the Civic ever since her involvement in War Paint (dresser). Her past Civic credits include World Goes Round (cast), Elf (dresser), Almost, Maine (lightboard operator), Dames at Sea (dresser), Murder on the Orient Express (dresser) and Xanadu (dresser), amongst being an usher for many shows. She loves being involved with productions whether it be on the stage or working backstage. "I'd like to thank my husband for encouraging me to come play at the Civic".
Merinda Edwards (Dresser) is currently a student at Western Michigan University studying social work. She was most recently in the floor crew for Civic's production of Xanadu in 2022. She has volunteered for various roles at the Civic including floor crew, props, dressers and even assistant stage managing for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Elf the Musical. In her free time, Merinda enjoys spending time with her friends, going to WMU hockey games, and exploring Kalamazoo and its surrounding areas.
Lou Irwin, Jr (Rehearsal Stage Manager) is a longtime volunteer both on and off stage and has appeared in Civic productions since 1990. He recently appeared in our season opener, Hello, Dolly! Audiences may remember Lou in recent productions of The Great American Songbook, Grand Ole Music and My Fair Lady. He claims to have too many favorite roles to list, but Lou also enjoys choir, sewing, Renaissance fairs, and traveling.
Anthony J. Hamilton (Director) is thrilled to join the Civic staff as Resident Artistic Associate & Teaching Artist. He made his New York directorial debut with a production entitled Grandma's Quilt (Negro Ensemble Company) in 2020. After two previews -- and on its opening night -- that production, like every other, was closed by the Broadway League. Anthony returned to Kalamazoo as the pandemic shut down theatres all over the country. Since being back, he has served as a Guest Professor of Theatre at Western Michigan University. In addition to teaching, he directed and choreographed Into the Woods (2021) at WMU. He previously directed Once on this Island (2019) & The 1940s Radio Hour (2021) at the Civic. As a performer, audiences may remember him from our productions of Ragtime (Henson, 2007), Godspell (Anthony, 2010), Ain t Misbehavin (William "Slick Willie" Davis, Jr., 2011), and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Freddy, 2012). He received a BA from WMU and an MFA from Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.
Stacey Jaeger is excited to have been hired at the Civic after her year as an intern. Originally from Iowa, where she grew up doing all things theatre, Stacey finished school at Beloit College before joining the Civic staff in 2021. Some of her favorite stage management experiences are productions of Twelfth Night in her hometown, The Moors at Beloit, and Murder on the Orient Express at the Civic. She'd like to thank her family for helping her get settled in the Kalamazoo area and a few of her mentors: Marina Bergenstock, Grant Freeman, Lisa Brannan, and Alicia Bailey.
Kaia Jordan (she/her/hers) (Follow Spot Operator) is a recent high school graduate who has enjoyed the theatre for over 10 years now. Other interests include music, dancing, baking, and video games. She has been on stage in shows such as Annie Get Your Gun, Shrek the Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and most recently, Xanadu, which she lists as her favorite she’s done. She’s also done a lot behind the scenes in The 1940’s Radio Hour, Murder on the Orient Express, and last year’s Penguin Project production of Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.
Atlas Kaeding (she/her/hers) (Floor/Fly Crew) is a junior at Portage Northern High School. Her favorite role she’s ever done at the Civic is when she operated spotlights for the production of Pippi Longstocking. Interests other than theatre include tennis, fitness, listening to music, and cooking.
Elijah Kaeding (he/him/his) (Floor/Fly Crew) is a junior at Portage Northern High School and has lived in Kalamazoo his whole life. His favorite production he’s been a part of at the Civic is Xanadu, where he was in the fly crew. Elijah has also been in the build crew for many of the Civic’s youth theatre productions.
V. Keithley (Floor/Fly Crew) has been involved in theatre for several productions. Past theatre credits include Harriet the Spy (floor crew, The Civic), Madagascar (fly crew, the Civic), Matilda (Lavender, the Civic), The Addams Family (Lurch, Portage West Mi ddle School), and Disney’s Descendants (follow spot operator, the Civic). When not doing theatre, V enjoys basketball.
David Kyhn (Scenic Designer/Charge Painter) The 2022-2023 season marks David's twentythird season as the Kalamazoo Civic's resident scenic designer. That means he has personally designed over one hundred sets since he first joined the Civic in the summer of 2000. In that time he has also had the pleasure of mentoring many young artists just starting their careers through the Civic's vibrant internship program. David lives with his family in downtown Kalamazoo; you may chance to meet them at a volunteer paint call as they frequently come down to lend a hand. Outside of the Civic, David enjoys oil painting, particularly portraits, and is currently exploring digital painting. Some of David's favorite designs include Hello, Dolly!, Much Ado about Nothing, 4000 Miles, The Women, The Baker s Wife, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Jekyll and Hyde, the Musical.
Christopher Lewis (Scenic Carpenter) moved to Kalamazoo from Georgia in 2008. A graduate of Georgia Southern University with a BA in Fine Arts, Christopher has worked for the Averitt Center for the Arts. His favorite Civic productions include Cyrano, Jekyll & Hyde, the Musical and Legally Blonde, the Musical. In his free time, Christopher enjoys making props, woodworking, building puppets and working on "mad scientist" projects.
Angela Mammel (Scenic Artist) is a recent graduate of Kalamazoo College with a B.A. in Theatre Arts. They have assisted in the scenic design process for numerous productions over the course of their college career, most notably designing the scenery and projections for an original one-person show entitled "Unzipped" as their senior thesis project, as well as designing the scenery for productions of "Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet and Silent Sky," and the projections for shows such as "Water by the Spoonful." In their free time, they enjoy playing guitar and piano, crocheting, and spending time with their dog, Pandora.
Marie McColley-Kerstetter (Music Director) has amassed an impressive list of theatrical credits over the last 50+ years. A sampling of the shows she has worked on at the Civic includes Fiddler on the Roof, Godspell, Evita, Baby, Forever Plaid, A Little Night Music, Merrily We Roll Along, Gypsy, Hello Dolly, Oklahoma, War Paint, The Wizard of Oz, The Buddy Holly Story, Quilters, Camelot, Nunsense 1 and 2, My Fair Lady and so many more. A much sought-after professional, Marie also served as Musical Director for the United Teens Talent Show for over twelve years and Farmers Alley Equity Theatre productions for ten years. She lists The Spitfire Grill, Catered Affair, Jane Eyre, A Grand Night for Singing, Plaid Tidings, The Marvelous Wonderettes and Winter Wonderettes as some of her favorite shows. A lifelong educator Marie taught for Kalamazoo Public Schools for 40 years. In recognition of her incredible accomplishments Marie was awarded the Kalamazoo Community Medal of Arts in 2002 as well as the Civic’s Larkin Noble Award for lifetime achievement in 2014.
Marie thanks her sisters Margaret and Aggie for their lifelong support of her dreams as well as her church -Westminster Presbyterian- for their constant nurturing and support for the last 15 years. Finally, she thanks Anthony for the lifelong joy he has brought to her life. She is so proud of his accomplishments and successes.
Delaney McKenzie (Lighting Designer) joined the Civic staff in 2018 as the Master Electrician and became the Resident Lighting and Sound Designer in 2020. She earned her BS in Theater: Design and Technology at Northwest Missouri State University and a MFA in Theater at Southern Illinois University where she specialized in Lighting Design. She has worked with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, Endstation Theater Company, McLeod Summer Playhouse, and two years as the Lead Lighting Technician at Interlochen. Delaney had the pleasure of being Assistant Lighting Designer and Programmer for James Moody on Tartuffe at Southern Illinois University in 2016. Mr. Moody is the author of 'Concert Lighting: Techniques, Art, and Business', and an alumnus of SIU. Outside of the theatre, Delaney is a painter in her spare time, spending hours in her studio creating abstract art while listening to show tunes or Top Gear episodes. She also enjoys making jewelry (evolved from her time making costuming chainmail) and is learning to play guitar.
Jacob Miller (Scenic Carpenter) graduated Grand Valley State University in 2020, earning his BA in Theatre and History and a minor in Music. He has worked at the Croswell Opera House, and the theatres at both Grandville and Vicksburg High School. In 2021, he made his Civic debut in The Tempest and worked as a Teaching Artist. In his free time Jacob still loves to act, traveling between Three Rivers and Grand Rapids for various projects.
Phillip A. Miller (Technical Director) has worked on every production we have produced since he joined the Civic staff in 2000. Prior to his arrival at the Civic, Phillip served as the Assistant Technical Director at the Barn Theatre and as a draftsman for the Children's Theatre Company and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, Phillip was the Technical Assistant at Western Michigan University, while earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technical Production.
Jacob Myny (Sound Designer) is excited for his very first season with the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre! Jacob is the resident sound designer here and comes from South Haven, MI. Jacob earned his BFA degree from Western Michigan University Theatre Department. He has traveled around working in New Hampshire, Florida, and Michigan. Some of his favorite previous works include, The Cake (The Naples Players), The Fantastics (Jean s Playhouse), and Much A Do About Nothing (Hope Summer Repertory Theatre). Justin Muse (Scenic Artist) Justin is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a BFA in Theater Design and Production. He is excited to be joining the Civic team as an intern for the 2022-23 season. Past designs include "Radium Girls," "Bare: A pop Opera," "and Don Pasquale."
Torri Jo Mitchell (Floor/Fly Crew) is currently serving as the Stage Management Intern at the Kalamazoo Civic. She is a lifelong Kalamazoo resident who has volunteered on shows at the Civic since 2013, where she developed a love for the joyous, collaborative art of theater. Some Civic productions she has been involved in are How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Hello, Dolly!, Once on This Island, The World Goes 'Round, and recently Murder on the Orient Express and Xanadu! She has also worked on shows at the Kindleberger Festival of the Performing Arts and for Bare Backstage Productions. Her favorite show is whatever she is working on at the moment!
Jaycee Myner (Assistant Stage Manager/Floor Manager) is a mom to three and mimi to six! In her free time, she loves to paint and spend time with her family. In fact, Jaycee started volunteering at the Civic, in part because of her daughter Chloe's involvement. Her two favorite shows she's been apart of are her first show at the Civic, Elf the Musical (2019), as a floor crew member and being on stage for the first time in years as Richard Petty/Grandma/Flossy for Skits and Giggles traveling troupe.
Ava Peterson (she/her/hers) (Floor/Fly Crew) is a 9th grader at Portage Central High School. She has most enjoyed this production of Newsies and being on the crew for Xanadu this past spring. In her free time, she enjoys running, tennis, and playing piano.
Sara Sherman (Co-Choreographer) is thrilled to be returning to the Civic—this time, as part of the production team! Sara’s past theatre experiences include Delee in Smokey Joe's Café (Kalamazoo Civic); Jolene in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Kalamazoo Civic); Ensemble in Little Shop of Horrors (MUSKET); Lynne in Stepping Out (Kalamazoo Civic); Dream Laurey in Oklahoma! (KindleBerger); Ensemble in Sister Act (Kalamazoo Civic); and Ginger in The 1940s Radio Hour (Kalamazoo Civic). A University of Michigan graduate and a native of Kalamazoo, Sara works as a dance instructor at Excel Dance Centre, where she also serves as their Early Childhood Director. In her free time, Sara enjoys cooking (eating), writing, and dog-sitting for her friends & family.
Jan Watson (Playback Operator) has been a volunteer at the Civic since 2010 and is usually found behind the scenes. Her favorites include Assistant Stage Manager for Rock of Ages and Tenderly, Stage Manager for Steel Magnolias and Sounds of the 60’s, and crew for Tommy and Side Show. She is a member of the Play Selection Committee and the recently formed Volunteer Advocacy Committee. She enjoys working in Education and Outreach with youth and camps/classes. Jan has lived in Kalamazoo for many years but is originally from Tennessee. “Glad to be working on this show with these talented people! Jared Watson (he/him/his) (A1 Operator) is the sound design intern here at the Civic and is currently making his Civic debut. Originally from Lake Orion, Michigan, he has lived in Kalamazoo for 5 years. Interests other than theatre include electronic music production, recording, and attending anime conventions.
