cover story

A new, old life begins for one once-dead forensic analyst-turned-small town sporting goods store clerk with a dark secret. After his life in New York state as Jim Lindsay unraveled, the past has come back to haunt Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall, “Six Feet Under”) in “Dexter: Resurrection.” The first two episodes of the series are available to stream now on Paramount+ with the Showtime plan, with their broadcast network debut taking place Sunday, July 13, on Paramount+ with Showtime.

In the series, Dexter makes a narrow escape from the events of “Dexter: New Blood” and sets off towards New York City, in part to try to reach his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott, “The Good Lord Bird”). Having been tipped off that Dexter is still alive and that he is likely to have been responsible for the Bay Harbour Butcher murders in Miami years ago, Angel Batista (David Zayas, “The Bear”), now captain of homicide of the Miami Metro Police, heads north to confront his former colleague.

“Dexter: Resurrection” also stars Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) as rideshare driver Blessing Kamara; Kadia Saraf (“The Better Sister”) as Det. Claudette Wallace; Dominic Fumusa (“Nurse Jackie”) as Det. Melvin Oliva; and Emilia Suarez (“Up Here”) as Harrison’s friend Elsa Rivera. Also back from the dead in guest roles to revive characters from the original series are John Lithgow (“The Old Man”) as Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer; Jimmy Smits (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”) as Miguel Prado, the assistant district attorney with a dark secret; and Erik King (“The Good Fight”) as Det. James Doakes, long thought to be the Bay Harbour Butcher.

This installment of the Dexter franchise boasts some exciting guest stars who may or may not entice Dexter’s dark passenger into action. Neil Patrick Harris (“Uncoupled”) is Lowell; David Dastmalchian (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) is Gareth; Eric Stonestreet (“American Auto”) is Al; and Krysten Ritter (“Orphan Black: Echoes”) is Mia.

Dexter Morgan’s resurrection comes after he faked his death in the finale of the original “Dexter,” then was revealed to have been living low as Jim in “Dexter: New Blood.” In Iron Lake, New York, Dexter had been living like a man in recovery as Jim, honoring the routine of daily life that kept his deepest desires at bay. A tense moment forced him to live, once again, by the code he thought he could suppress, sending his new life into a spiral.

The unexpected arrival of Harrison, the expectations of fatherhood that came with him and Dexter’s own crimes scratching the surface of long-buried secrets in Iron Lake combined in an explosive finale. Father and son, both plagued by murderous tendencies, dramatically part ways — Harrison in hopes of living a different, better life than Dexter.

Resuscitating their relationship is central to “Dexter: Resurrection,” Hall told Vanity Fair in April. “Harrison revealed himself to be, and remains, an all-the-more potent connection to Dexter’s tiny sense of humanity. He craves it, in spite of himself, so it’s a major bolt of thread running through his interior life and the life of the season.”

“Apocalypse in the Tropics” (July 14)

When does a democracy end, and a theocracy begin?

Petra Costa investigates the increasingly powerful grip that Christian evangelical leaders hold over politics in Brazil, gaining extraordinary access to the country’s top political leaders, including President Lula and former President Bolsonaro, as well as to Brazil’s most famous televangelist: a magnetic pastor who aspires to play puppet master to the far-right leader. The film chronicles the profound role the evangelical movement has played in Brazil’s recent political turmoil, and it also grapples with the apocalyptic theology that drives the movement’s chief protagonists.

Julia Roberts earned an Oscar as ‘Erin Brockovich’

Thanks to such huge successes as “Pretty Woman” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” Julia Roberts pretty much had her choice of roles by the time the title part in “Erin Brockovich” came her way. The fact-based 2000 drama will be shown Wednesday, July 16, on Starz Encore and Thursday, July 17, on Starz – with Roberts in an engaging, commanding and ultimately Oscar-winning portrayal of a single mother who finds work with an attorney (an also-excellent Albert Finney) and takes up a case of alleged groundwater contamination.

For any and all setbacks, the duo remains committed to getting a sizable settlement for the plaintiffs, who number more than 600. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Susannah Grant also delve into Erin’s personal life, with Aaron Eckhart doing fine work as her unconventional boyfriend. Clearly a great showcase for Roberts, the picture’s popularity expectedly raised the profile of the real-life Brockovich and her further crusades for justice. Marg Helgenberger, Peter Coyote, Cherry Jones and Conchata Ferrell are among other notable cast members.

more retro rewinds

“Mama’s Family” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, July 13): “The Carol Burnett Show” yielded this spinoff series that gets an all-day “Binge” marathon (it also runs weekdays on the channel), with a heavily made-up Vicki Lawrence as the sassy Mama, the matriarch of a Southern family that engages regularly in pointed barbs. Burnett, Harvey Korman and Betty White were recurring guest stars, but the humor was left largely to a weekly cast that also included Ken Berry, Dorothy Lyman and (in the first two seasons) a pre-”Golden Girls” Rue McClanahan. The sitcom launched on NBC in 1983-84, then resumed very successfully in first-run syndication from 1986 to 1990.

“Fail Safe” (Turner Classic Movies, Sunday, July 13): Based on a best-selling novel, director Sidney Lumet’s intense 1964 drama depicts what happens when a critical error sends American bombers toward Moscow to unleash nuclear weapons on the Russian capital. The U.S. president (played by Henry Fonda) desperately tries to recall the aircraft, but the pilots are skeptical about whether that order is real, steadily upping the stakes as the planes approach their target. The superb cast also includes Dan O’Herlihy, Walter Matthau, Fritz Weaver, Larry Hagman and (in a role that belied his later fame for comedy) Dom DeLuise.

Fever look to stay hot in key Sunday matchup against Wings

The WNBA returns with a 2025 midseason matchup between Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever as they host Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings Sunday, July 13, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, with the action airing live on ABC and ESPN+.

The Fever’s season is continuing to trend in the right direction, most notably welcoming the return of Caitlin Clark — who erupted in her return game from injury against the New York Liberty putting up 32 points, including nine assists and seven three-pointers.

After a massive four-team trade in February, first-year Fever forward Sophie Cunningham has quietly become a key piece off the bench. In her Fever debut against the Atlanta Dream, Cunningham finished with an impressive eight points, six rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes, doing a little bit of everything — exactly what the Fever needed her to do. Leading up to their matchup against the Wings, Cunningham has continued to remain consistent and poised, averaging 5.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game. Dallas, meanwhile, is in full rebuild mode. However, despite a struggling season (2-11), No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers has injected new life into the franchise. In her debut season, she recorded her first double-double (12 points, 10 assists) in just her third career WNBA game. Averaging 17 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game this season, she is a running favorite for rookie of the year.

The Fever enter Sunday’s game as the heavy favorites as Clark regains her rhythm. With the addition of Cunningham and the Fever’s depth on full display, the Wings will have their hands full.

“I think when you’re the young person at the job or the only woman or the only whatever...you have that feeling of just wanting to prove yourself so badly. In a lot of writing jobs, when I first started out, I was often the youngest person in the room. So you have that feeling of like, I might be young, but I don’t want anybody to know it.” — Ayo Edebiri of “The Bear” in an interview with Awards Radar.

“I had friends who played. I had a lifetime of dismissing golf. And then as I got older, I understood why people liked it. And then I got cast on a golf show so I had to kind of get up to speed. I didn’t have to golf much, but I had to know enough to be convincing as a guy who knew golf.” — Marc Maron of “Stick” speaking with Decider.

“There were conversations — actually, years ago — about me doing this show, and I expressed interest even back then. When you look at what Pat [Sajak] and Vanna [White, co-host] have built over the years...they are your friends. What they’ve established is special. So that’s why I said yes.” — Ryan Seacrest of “Wheel of Fortune” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Fixer (KOKI) 7 p.m.

Zillow Gone Wild (HGTV) 8:30 p.m.

Inspired by the exceedingly popular Instagram account @zillowgonewild, this series follows host Jack McBrayer as he tours some of the exceptionally weird and whacky properties on the market today. This time, he visits a home shaped like an actual shoe.
