Pressure: L.A. task force prevents further terror in ‘Countdown’
The countdown is on for the next action-packed, adrenaline-pumping thrill ride on Prime Video. Premiering Wednesday, June 25, on the streamer, “Countdown” stars “Supernatural’s” Jensen Ackles and “All Rise’s” Jessica Camacho as high-operating police officers assigned a deadly task that could save millions of innocent lives.
Helmed by Derek Haas, the creator behind hit shows such as “Chicago P.D” and “FBI: International,” as well as the action films “Wanted” (2008) and “The Double” (2011), the flagship season of “Countdown” is a 13-episode thrill ride that brings viewers into the heart of the danger while smoothing the tension with a healthy dose of comedy — something fans of the 15-season CW series “Supernatural” are well acquainted with.
Likewise, those who have dabbled in Haas’s other work will already know that he is no stranger to comedy-punctuated action himself, as he often leans toward gritty heroes who love their jobs — danger and all.
“I grew up loving action movies like ‘Die Hard,’ ‘Lethal Weapon,’ ‘Rush Hour’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’” Haas told Men’s Health magazine during a first-look exclusive interview, adding, “so those wild character-based, set piece-based action thrillers are always in the back of my mind. I like it when the heroes have a bounce in their step and love their jobs, versus the depressed, I’m-haunted-bywhat-I’ve-seen type of characters.”
And Ackles’ character, Mark Meachum, certainly falls into that character category.
Described by Ackles himself as a “rogue L.A. detective, wrongside-of-the-tracks kind of guy [who] takes risks that most people wouldn’t take,” the trailer shows that Meachum is recruited alongside other edgy and top-performing law enforcement officers to end an imminent terrorist plot that could wipe out a large portion of the city of Los Angeles. Referred to in the trailer as a “Chernobyl-level event” and “another 9-11,” the endgame plan sees many false starts throughout its 13 episodes. The question remains, however: will the team of superstar agents be enough to stop a well-designed attack on one of the U.S.’s largest cities?
Joining Meachum in a string of metropolitan heroics are Amber Oliveras, a female agent toughened by years of having to prove herself on the force, played by “All Rise” and “Taken” star Jessica Camacho; Keyonte Bell, played by “The Boys’” and “Animal Kingdom’s” Elliot Knight; Evan Shepherd, portrayed by Violett Beane of “The Flash” and Christopher Landon’s 2025 horror thriller “Drop”; Lucas Finau, played by “Young Rock’s” Uli Latukefu; and Nathan Blythe, the leading officer who recruited the other agents based on their track record, portrayed by “Grey’s Anatomy’s” so-called “McSteamy,” Eric Dane. According to Men’s Health magazine, whose online writing team got first access to details about the series, “Countdown” tells the story of the six “undercover agents from across various branches of United States law enforcement” who have “been assembled to investigate the mysterious case of an officer with the Department of Homeland Security who was murdered in broad daylight without any suspects or leads. As they hunt for the killer, they begin to unravel a larger plot that could end with not only one dead victim — but millions of them.”
Written and showrun by Haas, series direction for “Countdown” is provided by Jonathan Brown (“FBI: International”), Lisa Robinson (“New Amsterdam”), Avi Youabian (“All American”), Rashidi Natara Harper (“Hip Hop Uncovered”), Nina Lopez-Corrado (“Perry Mason”), Tess Malone (“Law & Order: Organized Crime”) and Eric Stoltz (“Madam Secretary”).

It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

Gi-hun persists with his goal to put an end to the game, while the Front Man continues onto his next move and the surviving players’ choices will lead to graver consequences with each round.
The animated ‘Beast’ is still a beauty
The Disney library holds many classic cartoon features, but one of the most beloved is the Oscar-winning 1991 version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Freeform shows the film Sunday, June 22, with Paige O’Hara furnishing the voice of Belle — the “beauty” who reaches the softer side of a fearsome beast (voiced by Robby Benson) and makes friends with various animate items in the castle where he resides.
They include teapot Mrs. Potts (very famously voiced by Angela Lansbury), candelabra Lumiere (voice of “Law & Order” veteran Jerry Orbach) and clock Cogsworth (voice of David Ogden Stiers. of “M*A*S*H” fame). Such songs as “Be Our Guest,” “Something There” and “Human Again” feature their vocals, with Lansbury’s rendering of the title tune being one of the highlights that helped bring composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman the picture’s Academy Award wins (plus Grammy Awards). Disney’s live-action 2017 version of the story will be on Freeform Friday, June 27.
“Ironheart” - Season 1 (June 24)
Set after the events of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), this new miniseries pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) — a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world — returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos). The series also stars Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam and Anji White.

“The Phil Silvers Show” (Catchy Comedy, weeknights): You have to get up very early or stay up very late to watch this Emmy-winning military sitcom that generated Silvers’s famous character Sgt. Bilko, a U.S. Army official known for his near-constant scheming. Originally shown on CBS from 1955 to 1959, the show was never called “Sgt. Bilko” while on that network, sporting the title “You’ll Never Get Rich” initially. The show’s writers included Neil Simon, later a legendary playwright. Allan Melvin, who would play another enlisted man for laughs on “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” was in the supporting cast; so was (in the first season) Tige Andrews, later Capt. Adam Greer on “The Mod Squad.”
“The Unit” (Heroes & Icons, Tuesdays): Boasting a notable cast and the strong pedigree of playwright David Mamet, who created the show and wrote a number of its scripts, this military drama — now being shown in four-episode blocks each Tuesday — first aired on CBS from 2006 to 2009. Dennis Haysbert (“24”) stars as the leader of a Special Forces team that travels the globe to execute risky missions, and the series also considers the loved ones at home who await their return. Regina Taylor, Scott Foley (seen lately on “Will Trent”), Robert Patrick (“The X-Files”) and Rebecca Pidgeon (Mamet’s real-life wife) also are among the series’ regulars.

Next gen NBA: Pro basketball draft heads to New York
The next generation of NBA has arrived as the 2025 NBA Draft tips off June 25-26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with one of the most anticipated NBA drafts in years airing live on TSN and ESPN.
The 2025 NBA Draft class looks to be loaded with star talent this year, making it one of the most anticipated in recent memory. Headlining this year’s draft class has been none other than Duke’s 6-9 forward Cooper Flagg, who had a stellar freshman year going into the draft, averaging 21.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. Further solidifying his place in the draft, Flagg’s performance against Arizona in the Sweet Sixteen — 30 points, six rebounds and seven assists — only continues to prove his generational talent.
With the Dallas Mavericks projected to pick Flagg with the first overall pick, all eyes will be on the 18-yearold as his versatility and basketball IQ have drawn impressive comparisons to the likes of LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama.
Beyond Flagg, there are several highly touted prospects drawing significant attention, including Dylan Harper of Rutgers, who averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and four assists per game, and Ace Bailey, also from Rutgers, who averaged 17.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. VJ Edgecombe from Baylor is also another rising star known for his defensive prowess He averaged 15 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists, and is projected to be a top-five pick in this year’s NBA Draft.
As the draft fast approaches, team executives will be scrambling to make final evaluations of these prospects, with every team looking to build for the future.

“I love it because there’s, like, sort of 36 cameras that we’re operating. I’m zooming in, I’m listening. I’ve got the evidence, okay? Who wants to argue with me now? - Gordon Ramsay of “Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service” speaking with Extra.
“The love for the contestants is real. When there’s animosity, you feel animosity. When there’s a lot of pressure and when there’s nervousness, you feel it. And you just want to calm people down, tell them to have a good time. Because at the end of the day, it’s television. It’s a show.” - Jay Pharoah of “The Quiz with Balls” on “Good Day Atlanta.”
“One of the most fun things in life is playing with your friends. I’m not a bad sport where I’m gonna get angry and stuff, but I definitely care. But that’s the type of person you want to play. I have some friends that just don’t really care, and where’s the fun in competing with them?” - Owen Wilson of “Stick” in an interview with The Dallas Morning News.
