Passing
of the crown: A new power rules the South Side in ‘The Chi’
The winds have changed in Chi-town. Following a shocking death in last season’s finale, the women of “The Chi” step up in the series’ seventh season, premiering Sunday, May 18, on the linear Paramount+ With Showtime network, and is available to stream on Paramount+ with Showtime.
Season 6’s finale episode opened with (spoilers) a bang — or rather the echo of a bang — and one of the city’s most notorious gangsters lying dead on the floor of his own club. For years, Otis “Douda” Perry (Curtiss Cook, “Carry-On,” 2024) ran Chicago, at times as a respected businessman and even as mayor for a short time, but always as a smooth operator conducting the city’s underworld.
Douda had made his fair share of enemies throughout his fiveseason-long run at the top of his empire, but it was ultimately his own No. 2, Nuck (Cortez Smith, “Loyalty Over Trust,” 2024), who pulled the trigger. Douda’s fate was sealed as he stared down Alicia (Lynn Whitfield, “Greenleaf”) as she asked for his final words and readied herself to take him out, only for Nuck, who’d recently survived a brutal beating at the hands of his boss, to step out of the shadows and make the shot.
Eliminating a common enemy did not, however, make friends of the two. This season, Alicia is decidedly on top, claiming her crown and bringing vital women up with her. While she initially speaks to the peaceful control of the city’s new regime in the official trailer for the upcoming season, it is not long before trouble comes knocking. According to Paramount: “as loyalties are tested and new rivalries are stoked, it becomes clear that there’s only one crown and it will come at a heavy cost.”
If Alicia wasn’t amenable to working with Nuck when they both had guns aimed at Douda, then the deal was done when Nuck killed Alicia’s son Rob (Iman Shumpert, “Them”) in the same episode. “It’s time to get to work,” Alicia says in the trailer. It all comes down on the shoulders of the women of “The Chi” to put an end to the terror that men have inflicted on the city for too long.
“To protect this city, we have to clean up these streets ourselves,” Alicia demands of her circle. She is out for revenge for her son as much as she wants to rid the streets of Chicago of senseless violence, staking out targets in the cover of darkness.
Meanwhile, Nuck is building something of his own now that he’s replaced Douda in his operation. He’s not like his predecessor, Nuck declares in the trailer, putting his new underlings in their place threatening, “One of you disrespect me, I’ll kill you.”
Returning to “The Chi” this season are Jacob Latimore (“House Party,” 2023) as Emmett Washington; Yolonda Ross (“American Gigolo”) as Jada Washington; Shamon Brown Jr. (“Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Stanley “Papa” Jackson; Michael V. Epps (“Primary Position,” 2023) as Jake Taylor; Birgundi Baker (“Black Lightning”) as Kiesha Williams; and Luke James (“Star”) as Victor “Trig” Taylor.
This new season introduces a few exciting guest stars to the Windy City. Phylicia Rashad (“The Beekeeper,” 2024) is Rene, a woman who is able to connect with Pastor Zeke (Daniel J. Watts, “The Penguin”). Wendy Raquel Robinson (“Poppa’s House”) is the generous Riley Dalton and Karrueche Tran (“Bel-Air”) is Zuri, a determined troublemaker.

“Untold: The Fall of Favre” (May 20) Super Bowl champion. Three-time NFL MVP. Hall of Famer. But that’s not the whole story. This tell-all documentary unravels quarterback Brett Favre’s legacy and pattern of unchecked behavior, including an explicit text message scandal and his involvement in a massive welfare fraud scheme that shocked the nation.
‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ ride again
Paul Newman, Robert Redford and director George Roy Hill had a couple of hugely entertaining hits together, and the first was the 1969 Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Turner Classic Movies shows the film on Tuesday, May 20, with the actors in the title roles of the legendary outlaws whose images were tailored to the two stars — displaying terrific repartee, whether blowing up a train or literally jumping off a cliff.
William Goldman’s Oscar-winning screenplay advises right from the start that what follows isn’t necessarily true, but it surely is enjoyable, extending to the two bandits’ mutual attraction for Etta Place (Katharine Ross, who has a memorably charming bicycle-ride sequence with Newman ... and whose then-husband-to-be, Sam Elliott, has a brief part here). Academy Awards also went to Conrad Hall’s cinematography, Burt Bacharach’s score and the B.J. Thomas-performed song “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” (Newman, Redford and Hill reunited for 1973’s “The Sting.”)
“Tucci in Italy” - Season 1 (May 19)
This five-part series follows Stanley Tucci across Italy’s stunning landscapes as he explores the deep connections between food, culture and history. More than a travelogue, it’s a rich, narrative-driven dive into the country’s iconic culinary traditions. Along the way, Tucci meets locals, chefs, artisans— and even cowboys—to uncover hidden gems and untold stories with National Geographic’s signature storytelling and his trademark wit.
more retro rewinds
“Doc” (Get TV, weekdays): A newer Fox series has the same title, but this 2001-04 drama — originally shown on the forerunner of what is now ION Television — marked a major transition from singer to actor for Billy Ray Cyrus. He plays a doctor who struggles to adjust from his work in rural Montana to his new job at a New York clinic, where his down-to-earth approach strikes some of his colleagues as almost alien. Not surprisingly, Cyrus’s daughter Miley is a guest star in several episodes; co-stars include Andrea C. Robinson, Derek McGrath, Ruth Marshall and Ron Lea.
“Flashdance” (MGM+, Monday, May 19): What a feeling, indeed. Director Adrian Lyne’s trendsetting 1983 musical drama did much to encourage the music video revolution by folding such sequences into a plot about a Pittsburgh steelworker (Jennifer Beals, in a star-making role) moonlighting as a dancer with professional aspirations toward the latter career. Michael Nouri plays her daytime boss, who takes a major interest in her once he learns of her other job. The main theme song, co-written and performed by Irene Cara, won an Oscar; the cast also includes Cynthia Rhodes (“Staying Alive”) and Lilia Skala.

McIlroy sets sights on second major victory for 2025
The world’s top golfers are set to hit the fairway for their second major tournament of the 2025 PGA Tour, beginning Thursday, May 15, with this year’s PGA Championship, to be held at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament concludes Sunday, May 18, with all rounds broadcast live on CBS.
There is something about this year’s PGA Championship that may keep bringing out the best in Rory McIlroy, who has performed well above par this season. Completing the long-awaited career Grand Slam at the Masters in April, he became only the sixth male player to complete this feat — with many fans now eagerly wondering whether he can complete the calendar Grand Slam.
With this year’s PGA Championship, there is a strong case to make that McIlroy can easily win his second major of the year, having already won four times in Charlotte (2010, 2015, 2021, 2024). And with victories this year at Pebble Beach, the Players and the Masters, McIlroy is setting the pace for what could be a historic season in golf.
Walking into the tournament as one of the favorites to win, it would be no surprise if McIlroy can pull off adding his sixth major and third career PGA Championship this weekend in what is sure to be a competitive field, with Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Ludvig Aberg all in top contention.
Don’t miss any of the action as the 2025 PGA Championship tees off Thursday, May 15, at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the tournament concluding Sunday, May 18.

“When we started, it was a purely personality-driven show. It’s been navigated to become a very heartfelt, human and artist-driven show, because of what the judges have done. I think they’ve done that deliberately.” —
Ryan Seacrest of “American Idol”
“I think I’m just so aware of Season 2 coming out, and everybody looking at it and looking at me. It’s scary, but it’s also quite exciting.” — Bella Ramsey of “The Last of Us”
“It looks slick and modern and beautiful, yes, but it is also very much a throwback to an old version of television, which is like, ‘Hey, come with us for 45 minutes. We’re gonna take care of you.’”
— Joshua Jackson of “Doctor Odyssey” in an interview with Vulture.
