Time for the Tonys: Broadway honors more of its best
Whatever challenges might come its way, the New York theater community manages to meet them and put on really big shows, as the continuation of the Tony Awards affirms.
The 78th edition of Broadway’s annual event, presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing, will be staged Sunday, June 8, at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall. Again this year, CBS and Paramount+ carry the ceremony, to be marked as usual by performances of numbers from nominated musicals, and appearances by many stars of screen and theater as presenters. Three shows lead with 10 nominations each: “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her” and “Maybe Happy Ending.”
This time, the Tonys get a first-time host who’s no stranger to the ceremony: Cynthia Erivo, who won her own Tony Award in 2016 for the musical version of “The Color Purple,” and she was nominated again in 2023 for the play “Fat Ham.” Erivo also has a Grammy Award and a Daytime Emmy Award from her participation in “The Color Purple,” and she was recently back on the award trail in a major way, with many nominations — including one for an Oscar — for her portrayal of Elphaba in the first movie to come from the musical “Wicked” (the second film will be released this coming holiday season).
Among the nominees are performers well known for their television or movie (or both) work, such as George Clooney (“Good Night, and Good Luck”), Mia Farrow (“The Roommate”), Audra McDonald (“Gypsy” now makes her the most-nominated performer in Tony history with 11 bids, six of which she has won), Sarah Snook (“The Picture of Dorian Gray”), Daniel Dae Kim (“Yellow Face”), Nicole Scherzinger (“Sunset Blvd.”), Sadie Sink (“John Proctor is the Villain”), Megan Hilty (“Death Becomes Her”), Darren Criss (“Maybe Happy Ending”), Harry Lennix (“Purpose”), Jeremy Jordan (“Floyd Collins”), Bob Odenkirk (“Glengarry Glen Ross”) and Justina Machado (“Real Women Have Curves: The Musical”). A special Tony Award for lifetime achievement will go to Broadway veteran (and four-time Tony winner) Harvey Fierstein (“Kinky Boots”).
Here are the nominees in several categories in The 78th Annual Tony Awards.
Best musical: “Buena Vista Social Club”; “Dead Outlaw”; “Death Becomes Her”; “Maybe Happy Ending”; “Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.”
Best play: “English”; “The Hills of California”; “John Proctor Is the Villain”; “Oh, Mary!”; “Purpose.”
Best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical: Megan Hilty, “Death Becomes Her”; Audra McDonald, “Gypsy”; Jasmine Amy Rogers, “Boop! The Musical”; Nicole Scherzinger, “Sunset Blvd.”; Jennifer Simard, “Death Becomes Her.”
Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical: Darren Criss, “Maybe Happy Ending”; Andrew Durand, “Dead Outlaw”; Tom Francis, “Sunset Blvd.”; Jonathan Groff, “Just in Time”; James Monroe Iglehart, “A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical”; Jeremy Jordan, “Floyd Collins.”
Best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play: Laura Donnelly, “The Hills of California”; Mia Farrow, “The Roommate”; LaTanya Richardson Jackson, “Purpose”; Sadie Sink, “John Proctor is the Villain”; Sarah Snook, “The Picture of Dorian Gray.”
Best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play: George Clooney, “Good Night, and Good Luck”; Cole Escola, “Oh, Mary!”; Jon Michael Hill, “Purpose”; Daniel Dae Kim, “Yellow Face”; Harry Lennix, “Purpose”; Louis McCartney, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

This documentary follows this journey as NASCAR celebrates this landmark anniversary.

“Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy” (June 10)
On November 5, 2021, Travis Scott stepped on stage to perform his set at Astroworld. What could have been the best night of the festival-goers lives quickly turned into a catastrophe that left 10 of them dead. This documentary takes an exclusive look at that night, told from the perspective of the survivors, paramedics, and security staff that were at the center of this devastating event.
An Oscar-winning
‘Ghost’ story that still endures
The elements of “Ghost” are disparate enough that it’s something of a miracle the movie works ... but indeed, the 1990 fantasy-drama has remained hugely popular over the years, with some iconic scenes that often have been immediately recognizable sources of parody. The film will be presented by MGM+ Marquee on Tuesday, June 10, and by MGM+ Hits on Saturday, June 14, with Patrick Swayze as a banker fatally shot by a mugger.
His spirit still hangs around, though, using a medium (Whoopi Goldberg, who won an Oscar for the performance) to communicate with his skeptical, grieving girlfriend (Demi Moore) and to attempt to keep her safe upon the discovery that she may be in danger. Current “Law & Order” regular Tony Goldwyn also stars in the movie that was directed by Jerry Zucker, best-known for such spoofs as “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun” at the time. The Righteous Brothers recording of “Unchained Melody” got a whole new life through its use here.
“Ocean with David Attenborough” (June 8)
In celebration of World Ocean Day, David Attenborough, after more than 70 years of exploring the planet, delivers his most urgent and hopeful message yet in a breathtaking new documentary that reveals both the wonder and fragility of our oceans. Through powerful, real-world examples from around the globe, Attenborough shows how nature can recover when given the chance. The documentary immerses viewers in stunning marine environments — from vibrant coral reefs and towering kelp forests to the mysterious open ocean — while confronting the harsh realities threatening these ecosystems, including destructive fishing practices, warming waters and mass coral bleaching.
more retro rewinds
“Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, June 8): Jim Nabors became hugely popular as folksy, friendly Gomer on “The Andy Griffith Show,” setting himself and the character up for this spinoff that was one of the top comedy hits of its time. Shown here in an all-day binge, the series — which originally ran from 1964 to 1969 on CBS — takes Gomer into the United States Marine Corps, where he becomes and remains the bane of the gruff Sgt. Carter’s (Frank Sutton) existence. The image Nabors projected here made it a big surprise to many people when he displayed his powerful singing talents, which he did frequently as a guest on “The Carol Burnett Show.”
“The Sandlot” (Freeform, Tuesday, June 10): A favorite film of many sports fans, this 1993 comedy centers on a young baseball team in the early 1960s. Tom Guiry plays a newcomer to town who finds kinship with the other players, though he has a rough initiation (David Mickey Evans, the movie’s director and co-writer, furnishes the character’s adult voice as the tale’s narrator). The picture is dominated by its cast of youthful unknowns, but Denis Leary and Karen Allen appear as the central figure’s stepfather and mother, and James Earl Jones is another highly notable co-star as the owner of a fearsome dog living near the title sandlot.

Usman, Buckley get set to ignite octagon for UFC Fight Night 257
The UFC returns this weekend with yet another highly anticipated event — UFC Fight Night 257 — as Kamaru Usman (20-4) and Joaquin Buckley (21-6) get set to clash in the main event Saturday, June 14, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Prelims and the main event air live on ESPN.
UFC Fight Night 257 is anticipated to be a special one, as former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman prepares for his first fight of 2025 after taking a break following a three-fight losing streak in 2023. The 38-year-old, who is currently the No. 5-ranked welterweight in the UFC, is determined to prove his best isn’t behind him after losing his last fight on short notice to at-the-time No. 1 middleweight contender Khamzat Chimaev in October 2023.
Speaking to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Usman explains how his time away from fighting reignited the spark to get back into the octagon.
“You know, [I] took a year off to really do some of those other things, and I tried to take care of little injuries that were nagging and you know,” Usman said. “I got to a place where I’m like ... it’s time to get back in there and enjoy it again before it’s gone,” Usman said.
Standing across the octagon for Saturday’s bout will be No. 7-ranked Joaquin Buckley, who is riding an impressive six-fight win streak, with notable victories against Colby Covington and Stephen Thompson.
With Usman looking to reinsert himself into the welterweight title conversation, and Buckley continuing to solidify his spot as a top contender in the division, fans should expect an explosive matchup as both fighters bring their distinct fighting styles to bear.
The co-main event features former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas (14-7), taking on No. 11-ranked flyweight fighter Miranda Maverick (17-5).

“As far as improv goes, there’s leeway ...we usually have an opportunity to play, especially if it’s a joke. If it’s just a joke, you can do the punch line as many different ways as you want.” — Alan Tudyk of “Resident Alien”
“I’m [going to] call it, I don’t know ...I know it’s not old Hollywood, but I could certainly say, ‘Hey 39 is nuts!’ Or I could go, ‘You know, ever since I turned 7,000 life really changed for me.’ I don’t know that I need this sort of middle portion. You never hear ‘mid-age bonanza.’ You hear ‘middle-age crisis.’ I’d like to sidestep that.” — Natasha Lyonne of “Poker Face” in an interview with Parade.
“When somebody says, ‘I have a hot temper in the kitchen,’ I say, ‘Welcome to my club...’ Because in my past, almost 40 years in this profession, we have all had our moments.” — José Andrés of “Yes, Chef” in an interview with Food and Drink.
