course: Disgraced pro golfer turns to coaching in ‘Stick’

If you can’t do, teach, right? A washed-up former pro golfer sees the light when he discovers a young talent and turns to coaching in the new streaming sitcom “Stick,” premiering Wednesday, June 4, on Apple TV+. Three episodes drop on premiere day, with new episodes releasing each Wednesday until the July 23 season finale.

Owen Wilson (“Loki”) stars in “Stick” as Pryce Cahill, a gifted golfer who went by the titular nickname in his heyday and whose career as a pro went down the drain following a meltdown during a tournament 20 years before we meet him in the series. Pryce had a long fall from grace after that fateful day on the course. Now, he’s divorced from his ex-wife, Amber-Linn (Judy Greer, “White House Plumbers”), out of a job and on the verge of losing his house.

It’s almost too on-the-nose that Pryce drives around in one of the last vestiges of his past life: a bright yellow Corvette that’s seen better days, to put it lightly. A flashy sports car that’s been treated like a beater.

In the official trailer for the series, Pryce is sitting at a bar after what must have been a long day, only to be confronted by another patron, Mitts (Marc Maron, “The Order,” 2024), who tells the story of his failures for everyone to hear. Mitts, who could be mistaken for Pryce’s biggest hater after that display, is actually his closest friend and former caddy.

In the middle of a golf lesson with a senior citizen, lightning strikes for Pryce when he hears the sound of a killer drive. Abandoning the lesson to find the source of this incredible swing, Pryce discovers 17-year-old Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager, “Insidious: The Red Door,” 2023), who is quickly chased out of the driving range by an employee of the course.

Inspired by the flighty virtuoso, Pryce tracks down Santi and learns two important things from his mother, Elena (Mariana Trevino, “The House of Flowers”). Firstly, Santi’s remarkable skill comes from being coached by his father throughout his youth. Secondly, Santi no longer plays the sport — also because of his dad. Pryce sees the obvious potential in Santi and feels like he can help someone reach and surpass the peak that he himself summited before succumbing to the pressure of the sport. With nothing to lose, Pryce pitches himself as the one who can help Santi qualify for the U.S. amateur championship and charms Elena — leading them to all set out in an RV together to make an impression on the course.

Also starring in “Stick” are Lilli Kay (“Yellowstone”) as Zero and Timothy Olyphant (“Havoc,” 2025) as a fellow former pro golfer from Pryce’s past. Real PGA golfers lend some credibility to the series, with guest appearances from Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa and Wyndham Clark. CBS Sports broadcasters Jim Nantz and Trevor Immelman; Matt Scharff, Brad Dalke and Garrett Clark of Good Good Golf; and golf enthusiast Dan Rapaport make cameos in the show.

Jason Keller (“Ford v. Ferrari,” 2019) created “Stick” and also executive produces the sports sitcom. Jaffar Mahmood (“Young Sheldon”), Jonathan Dayton (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”) and Valerie Faris (“Living With Yourself”) are the series directors.

“All The Money In The World” (Available Now)

In 1973, kidnappers demand $17 million from billionaire J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer) in exchange for his grandson’s release. Getty refuses to pay the perpetrators a single penny despite the desperate pleas from his former daughter-in-law Gail (Michelle Williams) and adviser Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg). With nowhere else to turn, Gail and Fletcher soon become unlikely allies in a race against time to save the teen’s life.

“Predator: Killer of Killers” (June

6)

The eighth installment in the Predator franchise, this anthology story follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent – the ultimate killer of killers.

Where all the top choices can be found in one place!

“Ginny & Georgia” - Season 3 (June 5)

Diving right back into drama, this season finds Georgia (Brianne Howey) having just been arrested for murder during her wedding — ruining her fairy tale ending and putting the spotlight on the Millers like never before. It’s always been Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia against the world, but the world has never come for them quite like this. Now, Ginny needs to see where she stands when push comes to shove – is the two of them against the world something Ginny really wants to sign up for?

Sylvester Stallone hopes to see ‘Daylight’ again classic corner

Sylvester Stallone in “Daylight”

Sylvester Stallone already had Rocky Balboa and John Rambo to his credit by the time he played more of an everyday hero in “Daylight,” an involving 1996 adventure-drama that Starz Encore shows on Tuesday, June 3. Typically and fittingly brawny, the star plays a former first responder turned New York taxi driver who may be the only hope for those trapped in a transit tunnel that has largely collapsed after a massive explosion.

A spunky would-be playwright (Amy Brenneman) becomes the cabbie’s main ally once he gets inside the tunnel, but perils remain all around them, making the survival of those who made it through the blast a real question mark. Viggo Mortensen, Claire Bloom, Jay O. Sanders, Karen Young, Stan Shaw, Barry Newman and Vanessa Bell Calloway also appear. And despite the very American setting it intends to put forth, the movie actually was made principally in Italy by director Rob Cohen, though you can’t tell that from watching it. Some exterior sequences, particularly those at the end, actually were filmed in the Big Apple.

“Phineas and Ferb” - Season 5 (June 6)

“Ferb, I know what we’re going to do today!” Centering on stepbrothers Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, the fan-favorite animated series for children follows the duo and their friends as they make the most of every single day of their summer vacation. This season the boys break several world records, Candace takes her driver’s license test, and Perry finally makes a trip to the vet.

more retro rewinds

“French Connection II” (FXM, Friday, June 6): This 1975 sequel to the Oscar-winning 1971 police drama tends to be underrated, but it’s a great showcase for returning star Gene Hackman, whose New York-cop character Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle arrives in Marseille — as a major fish out of water — to continue his pursuit of a drug kingpin (fellow returnee Fernando Rey). Doyle ends up being captured instead, though, and the torment he’s put through gives Hackman the means for a true tour de force of performing. John Frankenheimer, who had worked with Hackman earlier on “The Gypsy Moths” (1969), directed the film.

“Rosemary’s Baby” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, June 7): Though producer William Castle generally was known for gimmicky horror pictures, he went highbrow by making the 1968 screen version of Ira Levin’s novel about a pregnant young wife (Mia Farrow) whose elderly new neighbors are unusually interested in her — and her forthcoming child. Ruth Gordon won an Oscar for her contribution to director Roman Polanski’s cast, which also includes John Cassavetes, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Sidney Blackmer and Charles Grodin. The picture is one of guest co-host Paul Giamatti’s (“Billions”) choices for his “Two for One” night on TCM.

Judge, Yankees look to hammer down Ohtani, Dodgers in historic matchup

The 2025 Major League Baseball season continues with another marquee matchup featuring two of the league’s premier franchises as the Los Angeles Dodgers get set to host the New York Yankees Sunday, June 1, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, with all the action broadcast live on TSN.

The Yankees remain one of MLB’s top teams as the 2025 season progresses, firing on all fronts. At press time, they’ve scored 235 runs while allowing 160 run for a league best +75 differential. A crucial piece of the Yankees’ success this season has been Aaron Judge, who is once again performing at an MVP level, leading the entire MLB with a .409 batting average, 14 home runs and 39 RBIs. With the Yankees aiming to maintain their stronghold atop the American League East, Judge will need to continue performing at a high level against a stacked Los Angeles ball club.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers remain a powerhouse this season, sitting atop the MLB overall standings with an impressive 27-14 record. Seemingly carrying over the momentum from last season, their offense remains dominant, averaging 5.56 runs per game. Franchise star Shohei Ohtani has played a key role, hitting 12 home runs so far and ranking in the top five in OPS at 1.051.

Make no mistake, with both teams looking to win it all, this game promises to be a closely contested battle between two historic franchises as the Dodgers take on the Yankees, Sunday, June 1, at Dodger Stadium.

“You always meet fans of shows, and you understand why they’re passionate ...because they’ve been watching, they invest emotionally, and it’s their time away to escape life.” - Kyle Schmid of “NCIS: Origins”

“The show seems to resonate all over the world. I got one letter from a fan that was very touching because she lives in Ukraine, and I thought, ‘Wow. Here’s someone living in a country where she doesn’t even know if she’ll have a country, and she’s writing a fan letter because she enjoys watching the show.’ The power of what we do is humbling to me sometimes.” - Joe Mantegna of “Criminal Minds: Evolution”

“The thing that I love about MobLand is that it’s operatic. It’s like an opera. ...It’s got that sort of magnificent grandeur and excess about it, and I’ve always loved that kind of thing. It’s why I started off as a theater actress and why I love playing Empress Catherine the Great of Russia or Elizabeth I of England. I loved the grandeur of those worlds, you know. And the Harrigan world has that sort of excessive grandeur.” - Helen Mirren of “MobLand” in an interview with TVLine.
