cover story
BY SARAH PASSINGHAM
Investigators solve crimes by putting together the jigsaw puzzle of a case one piece at a time. A fresh perspective can put new pieces in the pile that make the outcome appear in a completely different way. In “Patience,” a new crime drama premiering on PBS on Sunday, June 15, that alternative point of view is exactly what the Yorkshire police are about to get.
The joint British-Belgian detective series, adapted from the original French show “Astrid et Raphaelle,” stars Ella Maisy Purvis (“A Kind of Spark”) as Patience Evans, an autistic woman who works in the city of York’s criminal records office as an archivist. Deep in records work, Patience is far from the investigative action that makes up DI Bea Metcalf’s (Laura Fraser, “Crime”) daily grind.
When Patience and Bea’s paths cross, it becomes clear to Bea that the archivist has a real gift. Not for sorting through paperwork, but for connecting the threads of serial criminals’ offenses going under the radar in York. Bea is eager to use Patience’s knack for seeing a bigger picture to solve nagging cases on her desk as much as she is motivated to push Patience to not waste her potential.
While Bea’s confidence in her abilities is inspiring, the change to routine could have consequences for Patience, as being thrust into an entirely new environment could be destabilizing for her, even though she is theoretically in her element as a sidekick to DI Metcalf. “The only things that really interest me are forensics and criminology,” Patience tells Bea over lunch in an official trailer for the upcoming series.
Also starring in “Patience” are Nathan Welsh (“Trying”) as DS Jake Hunter; Mark Benton (“Smoggie Queens”) as Calvin Baxter; Ali Ariaie (“The Great”) as DC Will Akbari; Tom Lewis (“Gentleman Jack”) as Elliot Scott; Liza Sadovy (“A Small Light”) as Dr. Loretta Parsons; Adrian Rawlins (“Unforgotten”) as Douglas Gilmour; Jamie Maclachlan (“Slow Horses”) as George Evans; Connor Curren (“Dodger”) as Billy Thompson; Maxwell Whitelock (“Boat Story”) as Alfie Metcalf-Haynes; Eddie Elks (“The Day of the Jackal”) as David Haynes; and newcomer Lotte Lauren as Mathilde Evans.
Out in the field, Bea and Patience form a strong partnership, bonding over their shared fixation with leaving no mystery unsolved. However, as Patience’s new work forces her to confront her difficult past and share more about her childhood with Bea, the self-taught detective may find herself out too far in the deep end of York’s criminal underworld.
Neurodivergent herself, Purvis spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her character in January when the series first aired on Channel 4 in the U.K. Speaking about Patience representing a more realistic characterization of autism on screen, Purvis said, “I think there are a lot of misconceptions that autistic people are apathetic, whereas we see in the show that Patience cares so deeply about things.”
Expanding on both the diversity and universality of Patience’s traits, Purvis added, “I think I’m more obsessive than determined. But I certainly share that [passion]. Patience is so internal and very calculated, while I often don’t know what I’m going to say next.”

Al Pacino has a ‘Dog Day’ in true heist drama classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
Director Sidney Lumet had a great run of critical and popular successes in the 1970s, and one of them surely was “Dog Day Afternoon,” which Turner Classic Movies shows Saturday, June 21, as the bottom half of a “Two for One” double feature selected by guest co-host Steve Buscemi. Lumet had also worked with Pacino two years earlier on “Serpico,” and they reunited for the fact-inspired 1975 drama that details an attempted bank robbery in Brooklyn, New York, by two amateurs played by Pacino and his earlier “Godfather” co-star John Cazale. Their plan goes south almost from the start as their intended cohort flees the scene, then police show up in force (led by the characters portrayed by James Broderick and Charles Durning). The robbers gradually get to know their hostages well and become folk heroes to much of the public that’s watching the situation unfold, either on site or via television, making for true suspense as the crooks try to engineer a getaway. Chris Sarandon and Lance Henriksen also appear in the film, which earned an Oscar for Frank Pierson’s screenplay.
“Underdogs” (June 16)
National Geographic gets up close and personal with the outcasts of the animal kingdom in this nature series, narrated by Ryan Reynolds. From their hidden talents to their unconventional hygiene choices to their unsavory courtship rituals, the series celebrates the unique behaviors of the animals who don’t usually get to be the stars of the show.
more retro rewinds
“Commando” (Hulu, streaming): After the success of “The Terminator,” every Hollywood executive wanted to be on the Arnold Schwarzenegger bandwagon, and this 1985 adventure also was a huge hit as one of his first follow-ups. The star plays the excellently named John Matrix, a Special Forces veteran whose young daughter (Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped by enemies who want to force him to commit an assassination. That is one big mistake, as the villains learn as Matrix turns the tables on them with considerable brawn. Rae Dawn Chong adds some levity as a stewardess the hero recruits to help him. Bill Paxton, who would co-star with Schwarzenegger in “True Lies” almost a decade later, has a relatively minor role here (as he also did in “The Terminator”).
“My Three Sons” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, June 15): An all-day marathon of the sitcom begins with “The First Marriage,” the sixth-season opener that originally aired in 1965 on CBS – marking a change of network (the series previously had been on ABC) and also a big cast change. Original co-star Tim Considine made his last appearance as one of the “three sons,” Mike Douglas, who married his girlfriend Sally (Meredith MacRae) and moved away. That left an opening in the Douglas household quickly filled by Barry Livingston as orphan Ernie; Livingston’s brother Stanley played Chip Douglas on the show.

Nelly Korda swings for her second career win at Blythefield
The 2025 LPGA season continues with players returning to Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan, from June 12-15, for the 11th annual 2025 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, with all rounds airing live on CBS.
After a career-defining 2024 season, 26-year-old Nelly Korda entered this year with big expectations. Last season, Korda won seven LPGA tournaments, including the Chevron Championship, her second career major title. Since that performance, Korda quickly moved up to No. 1-ranked female golfer in the world, while also earning LPGA Player of the Year honors.
Entering the 2025 campaign, Korda has faced challenging competition, having yet to win a tournament in 2025 (at press time). Despite this winless start, Korda’s managed to pull off three top 10 finishes in six starts this year, including her best finish of the season at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions, where she was the runner-up.
While the Florida native may not be having the kind of season she was anticipating, Korda remains a threat on the tour with consistent performances making her a must-watch player as the season continues. Korda leads the LPGA in scoring average (66.88) at press time, and ranks second in strokes gained total (2.40).
As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on Korda as she looks to win her second Meijer LPGA Classic.

“Vikram is, for any actor, an embarrassment of riches. ...As an actor, he’s kind of a dream. Anything is valid with Vikram. In my imagination, his energy is like the White Rabbit from ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ He is behind time, never on time and always lost, always in a rush. ...He wears many masks, but is very rarely honest, and I found that really fascinating as a challenge.” - Callum McGowan of “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” in an interview with UPI.
“That’s what you signed up for with this show. These characters are dealing with deep stuff. It’s comedy, but it also has depth. And they’re taking psychedelics, so it’s going to get crazy. It’s a great playing field for all of us. - Murray Bartlett of “Nine Perfect Strangers” in an interview with the CBC.
“It’s a joy to get to tell stories with people you love so I will always cherish any moment, big or small, that I get to hug my ‘Criminal Minds’ family or slip back into my dear friend Spencer’s oversized wingtips.” - Matthew Gray Gubler of “Criminal Minds: Evolution”
