The other ‘Miss Austen’: Miniseries focuses

on love and loathe of literary sisters

In the literary world, the name Austen typically invokes images of women in billowing attire atop a breezy English cliff or traversing a John Constable-worthy pastoral landscape with book in hand, perhaps unwilling to — but about to — meet her true love. From 1811’s “Sense and Sensibility” to 1817’s “Persuasion,” author Jane Austen wrote some of the English language’s best and most recognized novels of all time — but she also completed plenty of unpublished works, perhaps most famously a collection of letters fated to burn at the hand of her elder sister, Cassandra.

In the BBC series “Miss Austen,” coming to Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, May 4, showrunner and director Aisling Walsh (“Maudie,” 2016) pairs with screenwriter Andrea Gibb (“Call the Midwife”) for a dramatic retelling of author Gill Hornby’s third novel, also called “Miss Austen,” which explores the love, frustration and competition between the Austen sisters.

The four-part series, first released in the U.K. in February of this year, stars Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty”) as Cassandra Austen, with Synnove Karlsen (“Last Night in Soho,” 2021) and Patsy Ferran (“God’s Own Country,” 2017) portraying young Cassy and Jane Austen, respectively. To whom the title of “Miss Austen” applies, however, is left to the viewers’ discretion (the remaining six Austen siblings are male), but author Hornby’s intentions are clear: Cassandra is the heroine of this particular tale.

According to the PBS Masterpiece press description, “’Miss Austen’ takes a historic literary mystery — the notorious burning of Jane Austen’s letters by her sister Cassandra — and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.

“Based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel,” the explanation continues, “this period drama brings a fresh and intimate perspective to the Austen sisters’ lives — their joys, heartaches, and the passions that would shape Jane’s iconic novels.”

While Hornby’s novel debuted in 2020, the series was adapted for a 2025 release as a special way of marking the year Jane Austen would have turned 250 years old. But while Jane is, of course, a huge part of the reason Hornby began writing, the true heroine of “Miss Austen” is Cassandra, Jane’s oft-overlooked older sister.

Ahead of the release of “Miss Austen” on BBC One, Hornby was interviewed by The Guardian, noting, “I always feel that we who like Jane’s novels should be on our knees in gratitude for all of the good Cassandra did. Jane was a fragile person and fragile people need their wingman, and that is who [Cassandra] was.

“I’m haunted by women in history who had their destinies and then had to live on their wits when things went wrong,” Hornby stated later in the interview. And that wit — as great writing and acting would have it — is one of the Austen sisters’ many personality traits that is masterfully captured in the BBC miniseries.

Boasting a sizable and well-respected cast as the Austen family and various friends and neighbors, “Miss Austen” stars Alfred Enoch (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Liv Hill (“The Little Stranger,” 2018), Jessica Hynes (“The Royle Family”), Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”), Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”), Max Irons (“The Wife,” 2017), Mirren Mack (“The Doll Factory”), Kevin McNally (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” 2003), Clare Foster (“The Ex-Wife”), Carys Bowkett (“The Suspect”), Calam Lynch (“Sweetpea”) and rising talent Ruby Richardson (“The Crown”).

TCM has a memorable “Sweet Smell”

One of the most vicious films yet made, “Sweet Smell of Success” will have special significance when Turner Classic Movies shows it Saturday, May 10. It’ll be the bottom half of a two-for-one double feature chosen by guest host Jamie Lee Curtis – whose father, Tony Curtis, had one of his most atypical and memorable roles in the 1957 drama. He plays Sidney Falco, a press agent desperate to get his clients mentioned by powerful New York columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster), who’s very aware of the influence he wields and very willing to use it to his personal benefit. That includes his intended manipulation of Falco into breaking up the romance between Hunsecker’s sister (Susan Harrison) and a jazz musician (later “Route 66” and “Adam-12” star Martin Milner). James Wong Howe’s stark black-and-white cinematography and the razor-sharp dialogue (in part by co-screenwriter Ernest Lehman, adapting his own magazine story) also do much for the film, which is as unsettling as it is unforgettable.

“Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld” (Disney+ — May 4, Series Premiere)

An all-new anthology series of animated shorts from creator Dave Filoni, this follow-up to “Tales of the Jedi” and “Tales of the Empire” focuses on the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars galaxy through the experiences of two iconic villains. Former assassin and bounty hunter Asajj Ventress is given a new chance at life and must go on the run with an unexpected new ally, while outlaw Cad Bane faces his past when he confronts an old friend, now a Marshal on the opposite side of the law.

“Copycat” (Hulu, streaming): While their teaming helps to make this 1995 melodrama fascinating, Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter also make fascinating moves with their characters individually, Weaver plays an agoraphobic criminology expert who’s threatened by a serial killer, which gets her sought out by a spunky police detective (Hunter) and the latter’s partner (Dermot Mulroney). The tension continues to build as Weaver’s alter ego comes to realize that the felon is copying the approaches of famous murderers of the past; Harry Connick Jr. makes a strong impression as an incarcerated killer who’s interrogated for any possible help he can give.

“The Danny Thomas Show” (MeTV, Sunday, May 4): The channel starts its annual “The Month of Mayberry” event, and if one wonders why this series is included, it was the platform from which “The Andy Griffith Show” was spun off – giving rise to the CBS Mayberry-sitcom franchise that also included “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” and “Mayberry R.F.D.,” both of which also gets special showcases during the month. Here, Danny Williams (Thomas) makes a traffic error while passing through the North Carolina town, drawing the attention of Sheriff Andy Taylor (Griffith). Interestingly, though Frances Bavier appears here, she plays a character other than Aunt Bee.

Padres look to conclude three-game set with strong performance against Yankees

Get your popcorn ready, baseball fans! The 2025 MLB regular season continues with another star-studded matchup between the American League East juggernaut New York Yankees and the surging San Diego Padres, Wednesday, May 7, at Yankee Stadium in New York City. The matchup airs live on MLBNet and Prime Video.

The Padres have been off to a fiery start in 2025, winning their first seven games of the season and (at press time) hold a .286 team batting average, with 124 hits and 20 stolen bases.

Boasting an MLB-leading 10-3 record so far, the Padres look to keep building off a strong 2024 post-season that saw “the Friars” push the eventual World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers to the brink of elimination before they pulled out a win.

This season, the Padres’ offensive core has remained largely the same, with the likes of Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and star right-fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. all fully committed to the process of winning in a highly competitive National League West Division.

While the 26-year-old star Tatis was injured for all of 2022, out with an 80-game PED suspension in 2023 and had another injury-riddled campaign last season, he enters this season healthy and performing at an elite level. Currently, Tatis holds a .364 batting average, with all signs pointing to a potential return to his MVP-level playing form.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are highly motivated after reaching the World Series last season, eventually blowing a five-run lead in a home elimination game against the Dodgers — a World Series nightmare.

Despite the heartache, the Yankees rank second in home runs (26) and rank in the top five for strikeouts (124), something they will need to exploit against a well-rounded and gritty Padres club, which just last season pulled off 38 come-from-behind victories.

Full name: Fernando Gabriel Tatis Medina Jr.

Birthdate: Jan. 2, 1999 (26)

Birthplace: San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic

Height/weight: 6-3/227 pounds

Team(s): San Diego Padres (2023-present), (2019-2021)

Honors and achievements: Platinum Glove Award (2023), Golden Glove Award (2023), (2x Silver Slugger Award (2020, 2021), 2x AllStar (2021, 2024), 2x All-MLB First Team (2020, 2021)
