Live Like Mandy: A Dog’s Wisdom

At the beginning of June, I was honored to be recognized by the National Council of Jewish Women Long Beach & West Orange County (NCJW) with the Hannah G. Solomon Award. Thank you to the leadership of NCJW and to all who attended and sent contributions in my honor. The work of NCJW to support of the welfare of women, children and families is vital to our community. I made the following remarks that day.

Last summer Mark and I drove to Glacier National Park with our dog Mandy.

During the trip we each read John Steinbecks’ famous book, Travels with Charley, And why not! Steinbeck, the famous American writer, had taken his dog on a long trip to understand America and his own life. So, as an homage to both Steinbeck and Charley, I am taking a page out of my husband’s playbook, as he likes to talk about our dog Mandy in his sermons.

On his trip Steinbeck found that he had concerns about much of the “new America” he saw. And I would dare to say that many of us have concerns about the America we are living in today, over 60 years later. In thinking about these concerns, I have been reflecting on how we find meaning, and fulfill our beliefs, in the social justice work we do as individuals and as a community.

Over my 30 year career in service to the Jewish people I have been driven by the idea that we all can, as Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that we wish to see in the world”, as well as the idea that the Jewish community has a major role to play in repairing our often-broken world. Likewise, NCJW represents this ideal, and I praise you all for your untiring efforts to effect social action for women, children and families.

Our concerns for the world are many: We have faced terrorism and the brutal, inhumane torture of women during the Hamas insurrection.

We also face

- The spiraling up of Antisemitism;

- Worldwide decline of liberal democracies;

- Political unrest;

- An unhealthy focus on populism, nationalism, and isolationism;

- A generalized move away from the Enlightenment era ideals that helped shape our own democracy and the America Jewish Community;

- And worst of all the ongoing War between Israel and Hamas.

The past 8 months have been very stressful for those who care about Israel’s right to exist. How do we face that anguish which has brought to a head many of these issues. How do we continue the work while preserving ourselves?

I’d like to think that I have made a difference in this journey to a better world and that each of you in this room, so many of whom I have worked with for the past 20 years, has done so as well. For many of us, the fight feels so difficult now, as we can continue to pursue Tikkun Olam together. I personally feel that the work I am doing now, coming back to serve the community for a 3rd time, is among the most important work of my lifetime, but also tiring.

As an antidote to the challenge of advocating in a difficult time, I would suggest that we “Live like Mandy”. The following principles are based on our 11 years of living with this very smart dog (a lot like Steinbeck’s Charley).

Principle # 1: USE PASSION TO ENERGIZE OUR EFFORTS

Find a passion and live it.

Now Mandy has a particular passion for squirrels, and I don’t suggest that we follow her path of running and barking furiously at every squirrel that dares to traverse the fence in our back yard, but we can follow her example of the energy she puts into her passion.

Principle #2: KEEP LOVE AT THE FOREFRONT

Seek opportunities to use love in each of our encounters on a daily basis.

For Mandy, this means wagging enthusiastically when we come home and sleeping in the middle of our bed. For each of us love can mean making connections and keeping open minds in our encounters, especially with those who are different than us.

Principle #3 TAKE NAPS

We need to be easy on ourselves. For Mandy, this means frequent naps. For Each of us, this means using our passion to make the world a better place in our own small corner of the world. I don’t feel I have made all of the change in the world that I would like to see, so I like to follow the advice from Pirke Avot that says that while we are all required to do the work, we are not obligated to complete the work, as carrying responsibility for our entire society is too big for any one person.

Principle

#4 TAKE LONG WALKS

Remember, we do not walk alone, we walk in community

For Mandy, few things are more important than long daily walks. But our time together on this long walk is important.

Principle

#5 BE A LOYAL MEMBER OF THE PACK

Make Social connections.

Psychology tells us that one of the most important factors in aging gracefully and weathering the societal challenges we face is connecting with others. Mandy follows this aphorism regularly: Even though she seldom sees our daughter she never forgets her, and enthusiastically continued on page 13

Hebrew High Celebrates 20th Year

Los Alamitos CteenU-Hebrew High offers accredited Jewish courses for teens. The CteenU Jewish courses introduce students to Israel, Jewish philosophy, Jewish Law, and Jewish Wellness. These valuable lessons offer Torah-based tools to empower students with an eye-opening, unique Jewish world outlook and gift students with a healthy self-understanding of what it means to be Jewish. The instructors for the course, Mrs. Bluma and Rabbi Shmuel Marcus, are seasoned Jewish educators with a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Jewish teachings. Hebrew High has partnered with Yeshiva University in NY to enable 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade students to earn college elective credits from Yeshiva University. Transcripts appear on students’ records directly from Yeshiva University, making these courses.

Recently, Hebrew High opened a new 8th and 9th-grade program for students not enrolled in the YU program. This new program offers an excellent opportunity for our local teens to instantly make Jewish friends and be among their peers while also getting a Jewish education that is both fun and meaningful.

Hebrew High students also have the opportunity to join thousands of fellow Jewish teens in New York City for the annual Cteen Shabbaton

weekend of Jewish leadership, pride, and friendship.

The Hebrew High Scholarships ensure that all students have access to Jewish education. This project is funded, in part, by Mr. G Scholarship Fund and Jewish Long Beach.

Hebrew High meetings are held on Sundays yearly between Sept. and June. If you have any questions about the transcripts or the program, feel free to visit www.ChabadLosAl.com or text/ call 714.828.1851.

Jewish Long Beach Launches Scholarship Program Promoting Participation in Jewish Summer Camp, Israel Experiences

Jewish Long Beach is pleased to announce the launch of a new Scholarship program to promote youth and young adult participation in Jewish summer camp opportunities, Israel experiences and other Jewish educational and leadership training programs. This year, Jewish Long Beach is funding over $42,000 in scholarships to 79 awardees representing a broad cross section of our Jewish community, including youth and families active with the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Congregation Lubavitch, Hebrew Academy, Shul by the Shore, Temple Beth David, Temple Beth Shalom, Temple Israel, and Temple Nar Tamid.

Our 79 awardees are enrolled in 16 different programs – local, national and international – including Camp Alonim, Camp Gan Israel Montreal, Camp Komaroff, Camp Mountain Chai, Camp

Newman, Hebrew Academy, Maccabi USA Israel and Silver Gan Israel Day Camp. Funding for these scholarships is made possible by the Jewish Long Beach Board of Directors, through the Gordon Lentzner Community Impact Grants program, as well as through the generous support of the following:

• Robert Baldwin & Family - whose bequest provides funding for local youth & young adults to travel, study, and experience Israel

• Rabbi Howard Laibson - whose endowment provides funding for local youth to attend Jewish sleepaway camp

• Congregation Shir Chadash – whose legacy of caring for the next generation of Jewish leaders is sustained through proceeds of their building sale

• The Jewish Connections Network – a Giving Circle created to increase access to Jewish educational and enrichment activities for Jewish children and families throughout our community.

We look forward to sharing the impact of these scholarships and the Jewish engagement that they will help to foster. Be on the lookout for articles from our scholarship recipients in future editions of the Jewish Community Chronicle where they will share their experiences with us! Future editions will also share more the Jewish Connections Giving Circle, and the Kaiser Family Israel Scholarship that benefits the Hebrew Academy and Beach Hillel students.

A Legacy of sustaining Jewish Life in Greater Long Beach

Jewish Long Beach is honored to continue the philanthropic legacy of community members, and especially grateful for those who left a planned gift in their estate to form an Annual Campaign Endowmnet. Their generosity lives on in perpetuity through the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach. Their memories remain a blessing to our community, and their legacy supports advocacy, programming, leadership training, and grantmaking that creates a safe, family-friendly environment, where one can be proud to be Jewish and partner with the Greater Long Beach community. With Dr. James Licht’s passing earlier this year, his legacy is cemented with a Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment. Dr. Licht and his wife, Anne, have both continued the generous support they gave in their lifetime through Planned Giving. While their greatest legacy are the loving children and grandchildren, his leadership, caring heart, and strength in identity lives on in the mission-driven work of Jewish Long Beach. There are many ways one can leave a charitable legacy to the causes and nonprofit organizations through Jewish Long Beach and the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach, so please visit our website and contact Kevin Giser, Chief Operating & Development Officer.

Thriving Beyond the Classroom: Discover the Benefits of a Nurturing Learning Education

“When I first started bringing my children here, I was looking for a place where I felt happy. Now, it’s about finding a place where my child feels safe, supported, and valued.” These words from a fellow parent encapsulate the shift many of us experience. Initially, we seek a school where we feel welcomed. Over time, we realize the true joy comes from seeing our children thrive in an environment that nurtures their growth and identity.

Hebrew Academy is distinct for its profound sense of community and support. It’s not just a school; it’s a place where children and parents form deep, lasting bonds. Happiness and support are intertwined here, creating an environment where our children find inspiration, build lifelong connections, and develop an appreciation for Jewish identity. The relationships and Jewish values fostered are not just for the school years but for a lifetime, empowering our children to thrive and positively impact the world with the lessons of their Jewish experience.

The tragic events of October 7th cast a long shadow over our community, highlighting the persistent challenges we face as Jews. In the aftermath, Hebrew Academy’s role as a place of unwavering support and resilience became even more apparent. This year, through prayer, fundraisers, community initiatives, and even opening our doors to families escaping the war in Israel, we found comfort and strength in supporting others.

When Rabbi Popack asked two visiting IDF soldiers what the Hebrew Academy could do to support the IDF efforts from America, their response was humbling and inspiring: “You already are! You are teaching your kids to pray for us, to do mitzvot for us, and to love our land and

the people we are fighting for.” Their words affirmed the impact of our daily actions and the deep connection between our students and the soldiers who defend our homeland.

Our third-grade students took on the heartfelt task of praying with extra concentration for their classmate’s sibling who joined the IDF. These lessons are constant; they are woven into the fabric of our daily lives. We assemble to sing, pray, and perform good deeds, reinforcing the values of compassion, unity, and responsibility. Through these collective acts, we remind ourselves and our children that we are not alone; we are part of a larger, supportive community committed to making a positive impact.

Reflecting on this year, it’s clear that Hebrew Academy is more than just a place of learning. It’s a community where every individual is valued and supported. Our commitment to fostering a strong sense of community and appreciation for Jewish identity remains unwavering. We are not just educating our children; we are equipping them to face the world with steadfast resilience, faith, and a profound sense of belonging.

Jewish education is our antidote to antisemitism. At Hebrew Academy, we provide our children with a profound understanding of their heritage, teaching them to respond to adversity with knowledge, resilience, and positive action. By equipping our children with a comprehensive Jewish education and a strong sense of community, we instill the confidence and resilience needed to stand firm in their beliefs and navigate the world with unwavering faith.

According to the American Psychological Association, supportive relationships and environments significantly enhance a child’s resilience and overall well-being, making them better equipped to handle life’s challenges with confidence and empathy. The nurturing foundation at Hebrew Academy ensures our children grow into their best selves, supported by a community that values and uplifts them during their formative years.

As we look ahead, we invite you to join our Hebrew Academy family. Here, your children will receive an outstanding education while being embraced by a community that cherishes and supports them. Together, we will continue to build a future where our children grow with integrity, compassion, and a deep-rooted Jewish identity. Join us in this journey, and let’s create a brighter, stronger, and empowered Jewish future.

Psychological research shows that children who grow up in a safe and supportive environment develop a stronger sense of self-worth and emotional stability.

Shalom Aleichem to Orel Raly!

Please join us in giving Orel Raly a big Camp Komaroff welcome: Shalom Aleichem, we are so glad to see you! Orel arrived in Long Beach in June all the way from her hometown Holon, Israel, to serve as our camp’s Shaliach (sha-lee-AH) for summer 2024. The beloved tradition of welcoming shlichim (shleh-HEEM), or Israeli staff, to our camp is made possible by the Jewish Agency for Israel and the generosity of Jewish Long Beach donors.

The road from Israel to Long Beach wasn’t easy. For months, it was uncertain if Camp Komaroff would be able to host Israeli camp staff this summer since so many eligible shlichim answered the call to service in the ongoing war in Israel. Thanks to the tireless work of Jewish Federations of North America and its partners, many Jewish day and sleepaway camps around the world can

continue to welcome shlichim into their communities.

In addition to familiar summer camp duties, Orel will also have a special role in educating campers and staff alike on Israeli culture, music, art, language, and food. These activities often become some of the most memorable of the summer. This summer especially, it is a deep honor to be able to serve Israel in this unique way.

Orel loves to travel and enjoy live music. She is especially excited to spend the summer here in Long Beach since it feels so reminiscent of Tel Aviv, her favorite place to be in Israel. She is particularly looking forward to connecting with the Jewish community and experiencing Shabbat dinners in California. Be sure to say hi when you see her around the J!

Fitness Staff Spotlight: Leonor Martinez - Silver Sneaker Instructor, Personal Trainer

Elsie Bennett | Director of Fitness & Wellness

As the years gracefully unfold, maintaining health and vitality becomes increasingly essential. Senior fitness classes stand as beacons of empowerment, offering tailored exercises, camaraderie, and guidance to those navigating the golden years of life. Amidst these classes, there exists an unsung hero—the instructor—whose passion, expertise, and compassion weave together an experience that transcends mere physical activity.

Leonor Martinez is an ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) certified Personal Fitness Trainer/Coach, Nutrition Coach, NESTA Core Conditioning Specialist, Silver Sneakers Instructor, and Group Fitness Instructor. She has been training for the past 20 years and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology: Fitness at California State University, Long Beach. When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Leonor replied “I enjoy working in the health and fitness industry and feel most capable of developing remarkable results for my clients/students. I am

dependable and take extraordinary pride in my performance as a professional. I am committed to working hard and seeing the challenges overcome and lead to successful outcomes.”

The benefits of senior fitness classes extend far beyond the physical, touching upon mental, emotional, and social well-being. Engaging in regular exercise fosters cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and enhances flexibility – crucial components in maintaining independence and preventing age-related ailments. Moreover, exercise acts as a potent mood booster, releasing endorphins and combating feelings of anxiety and depression, fostering a sense of emotional strength. Join us this summer for one of our senior fitness classes led by Leonor on Monday at 10:00am, or Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00am. Cheers to health and longevity!

JCC Cares supports food equity through service

Food equity, the idea that everyone should have access to nutritious and sufficient food, is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and values. Jewish Long Beach, through our JCC Cares programs, embraces the Jewish principles of tikkun olam (repairing the world), chesed (loving-kindness), and tzedakah (charity) to address issues like food insecurity while

embodies tikkun olam, emphasizing the importance of kind deeds in making a positive impact on the world. Last year, OBKLA’s volunteers prepared over 70,000 meals, reflecting the collective effort to ensure no one goes hungry.

Jewish texts provide a historical and ethical framework for addressing food insecurity. Leviticus 19:9-10 and

translate into supporting urban agriculture, participating in food drives, or volunteering with organizations like OBKLA. By engaging in such activities, we not only help those in need but also strengthen the fabric of our community. With JCC Cares, we believe in the power of community and compassion to drive change. Through our programs

We invite you to join us on August 5th for a special service project at OBKLA.

This event is open to individuals and families with children ages 5 and up, offering a unique opportunity to engage in intergenerational, hands-on service while learning about Jewish values and traditions. Participants will not only help prepare meals for those in need but also delve into Jewish service learning, exploring texts and discussions that highlight the importance of service in the name of food inequity. This enriching experience aims to foster a deeper understanding of how our actions can contribute to repairing the world, creating a compassionate and just community. You can find more information and register to attend on our website.

OBKLA is a non-denominational, community-run kitchen that prepares Kosher meals for those in need across Los Angeles. The organization’s mission

Deuteronomy 24:19-22 instruct farmers to leave parts of their harvest for the poor and the stranger, reminding us of our duty to those less fortunate. These teachings resonate today, urging us to support vulnerable members of our community through actions inspired by our values and history.

Janice Sellers: Bubbie, Who Are You?: Finding the Maiden Names in Your Family Tree

Female relatives can be difficult to trace, but they can be found. This presentation introduces resources for tracing the women in your family, many of which are available online, including family items, oral histories, federal and state census records, immigration records, vital records, religious records, journals, newspapers, legal and court records, library archives, and manuscript collections.

Janice M. Sellers is related to actor Peter Sellers and to John of Gaunt, son of a king and father of a king. At least that’s what her grandparents told her. Unfortunately, they were wrong, but that’s why she has researched her family for 49 years and now helps others find the right pieces to fit their genealogy puzzles. She specializes in Jewish, Black, forensic, and newspaper research and has taught at local to international levels. Her site is ancestraldiscoveries.com.

Making a Tribute

Making a tribute is a thoughtful way to celebrate a friend, family member, teacher, milestone, or special occasion. A tribute gift is also a heartfelt way to acknowledge the passing of a loved one. We will send a card to the person you are honoring, or to the family of the person being remembered, letting them know of your thoughtfulness and generosity. A list of all tributes will be published in the next Jewish Long Beach Chronicle, as well as listed on our website. July/August issue tributes are due by June 6, 2024.

Tributes can be directed to support Jessie Butler Senior Meals, Campus Security, financial aid for our Early Childcare Education center, Camp Komaroff scholarships, JCC Maccabi Games, Jewish Life & Culture programs, capital improvement projects, and your favorite program!

Tributes can be made directly on our website at www.jewishlongbeach.org and by contacting Yolanda Placencio, at 562426-7601 extension 1314 or by email at yplacencio@jewishlongbeach.org
