Shalom Aleichem to Orel Raly!

Brandon Murray | Camp Komaroff & Youth Program Manager

Please join us in giving Orel Raly a big Camp Komaroff welcome: Shalom Aleichem, we are so glad to see you! Orel arrived in Long Beach in June all the way from her hometown Holon, Israel, to serve as our camp’s Shaliach (sha-lee-AH) for summer 2024. The beloved tradition of welcoming shlichim (shleh-HEEM), or Israeli staff, to our camp is made possible by the Jewish Agency for Israel and the generosity of Jewish Long Beach donors.

The road from Israel to Long Beach wasn’t easy. For months, it was uncertain if Camp Komaroff would be able to host Israeli camp staff this summer since so many eligible shlichim answered the call to service in the ongoing war in Israel. Thanks to the tireless work of Jewish Federations of North America and its partners, many Jewish day and sleepaway camps around the world can continue to welcome shlichim into their communities.

In addition to familiar summer camp duties, Orel will also have a special role in educating campers and staff alike on Israeli culture, music, art, language, and food. These activities often become some of the most memorable of the summer. This summer especially, it is a deep honor to be able to serve Israel in this unique way.

Orel loves to travel and enjoy live music. She is especially excited to spend the summer here in Long Beach since it feels so reminiscent of Tel Aviv, her favorite place to be in Israel. She is particularly looking forward to connecting with the Jewish community and experiencing Shabbat dinners in California. Be sure to say hi when you see her around the J!
