Hello, everyone, my goodness, how the time has flown. It only seems like yesterday that I sat writing my contribution for the last edition! I don’t know what went wrong this month, but I had to chase a lot of contributors for late copy. Please note the closing date is always below this article and also on page 47 in the calendar of events. Whilst I am speaking of copy. I have mentioned several times before that it is very time consuming for me to convert an A4 poster to fit into the space I have available. Please, Please, Please send copy to me as a word document with any logos or pictures as Jpegs and leave it to me to display. Otherwise, I might just have to send it back to you! I try not to moan too often, but here I go again. It would help greatly if I could be notified of any changes in contacts so that I can keep them up-to-date. All too often I have to put my detective hat on to do this. Having had a good moan, I really enjoy doing this, Here’s to next time. Clerk:- Katie Amaouche, Inglewood, Dover Road, Ringwould CT14 8BP Tel:- 01304 729 081 Email:- parishclerkrwk@gmail.com www.ringwouldwithkingsdownpc.kentparishes.gov.uk/links/

The monthly meeting of the Parish Council took place on Monday 9 th March at Kingsdown Village Hall. Numerous residents attended to address the Council with a variety of matters. At the meeting the Parish Council unanimously approved the installation of Phase Two of Kingsdown Play Park. The last push of fund raising by FKPP will hopefully enable a summer installation. The Parish Council offered thanks to FKPP, Cllrs Fowler and Zammit who have all worked tirelessly in finalising the proposal for Phase Two. Well done to all! The Community Warden advised that a Pop-up CafĂŠ would be starting in Ringwould by the Village Green from April and the Parish Council fully support this project. The Parish Council received information from Dover District Council who confirmed that it is the responsibility of DDC to cleanse the roads of litter within the Dover District. The Council has a contract with Veolia who carry out this work on their behalf. If you have a particular waste related issue you can report it on the DDC website. The County Councillor advised the Parish Council that the recent weather has worsened the pot holes in the county and that you can report pot holes via the KCC website. The Parish Council has two vacancies for the Co-option of a Parish Councillor. If this is something that interests you please contact the Clerk for more details. The Annual Parish Meeting of the Parish takes place on Monday 16 th April at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School at 7.00pm. Please come along for a glass of wine and meet your Councillors! Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council

Vacancies for Councillors The Parish Council is currently co-opting two new councillors. The role of councillor is important if the Council is to reflect all the views of the residents of Ringwould and Kingsdown. It is an interesting role and while it keeps you in touch with everything that is going on in the villages, it enables you to make a contribution. Please contact the Clerk to the Parish Council for an application form or any further information. Mrs Kate Amaouche 01304 729 081 parishclerkrwk@gmail.com Clerk’s working hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings

Guardians of the Deep apologise for having to postpone the beach clean at the last moment because of the snow and will send us a new date soon. We are pleased to announce that we have received a grant from Kent County Council for 50% of the cost of erecting better signage on the footpath between Kingsdown and Ringwould. In March Jacqui Brook, our Police Community Support Officer, reminded us of ways to deter burglars. Lock doors and windows; ensure keys are out of sight and away from the letterbox; install a visual burglar alarm; install good outside lighting; put a talk radio programme and/or lights on timer switches when you go away; remove valuables from view through windows; keep fences and hedges in good condition; keep ladders and tools locked away; consider labelling valuables with smartwater or register them at www.immobilise.com; and report anything suspicious to telephone number 101 or, if you think it is an emergency, to 999. Our next talk is on April 24th and will be Spring into Spring; Wild Plants for Modern Cuisine by Lucia Stuart, forager and founder of The Wild Kitchen. All talks take place at Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School. Doors open at 7:30pm for refreshments; general discussion at 7:45pm; Talks start 8pm and everyone is out by 9:15. Members £3, Non-members £4, except for police talk. And everyone is welcome. And finally, we need a new Treasurer and a new Communications Officer, so if you like money or words, please get in touch. Anne-Marie: talks@kingsdownconservation.co.uk

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Jane Jobey Tel:- 01304 381 702 Lighter nights are here and the smell of spring is in the air. There is no need to feel anxious; a few basic things to do and you will be up and running. Be prepared for both winter and summer in early April so buy in plug plants, and check whether the garden centre still has a roof over them; if so be prepared to protect them against the odd frost. If you have not started yet the first job is pulling out perennial weeds so you can mulch. Do it now, then the annual weeds will be a breeze to hoe. Mulch with your own compost or with bought garden compost, 5cms will do. It is important that the soil temperature is at least 7Cº before planting out. 1. Sow hardy annuals and annual climbers outdoors 2. Clean up perennials, dividing to make more plants, and plant new ones 3. Break off spent bulb heads 4. Feed roses 5. Use a general fertiliser like chicken pellets for the rest of the garden Dates for your diary: Monday 30th April - Steve Bradley will be talking about growing vegetables. Don’t forget Kingsdown Garage Safari includes a plant sale on 13th May Jaqui Stephen 9

Dear all, It seems strange that I am referring to Spring and home and garden security considering the poor weather we have experienced recently but it is only a few weeks before the clocks change, and gardening activity takes off again. This is traditionally the time when a rise in garden and shed thefts occur so please note the tips below. For more detailed information please visit the Kent Police website. Your guide to crime prevention – Home and Garden Security Protect your Garden • Maintain hedges and fences to prevent unwanted visitors from entering your garden • Close your garden gate and lock it from the inside • Store bins and ladders carefully so they can’t be used as climbing aids • Store tools and equipment somewhere secure after use so they don’t get stolen or used to break into your home • Secure sheds and garages with suitable locks and consider fitting shed alarms and security lights • Disable lawn mowers and other large machinery when not in use and chain items together or to a solid anchor point • Security mark valuable items – taking photographs and recording details such as serial numbers and identifying marks can also help to identify items if they get lost or stolen. • Consider registering valuables on a property database such as www.immobilise.com Regards, PSE 59727 Andrew Judd Volunteer & Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer, for South East Kent Police.

Dear Villagers It has been a couple of busy months ar school with the Year 3/4 production (Shakespeare Rocks), a full sporting programme and World Book Day. One of the highlights for me, though, was the regional heats of The Great Big Dance Off……. 34 children from Kingsdown School took part in the regional finals of TGBDO at the Leas Cliffe Hall, Folkestone. The school entered two routines - one in a ‘country style’ to the music from Footloose and the other recognising the work of our emergency services. Both dances had been choreographed by Danni Relf, with weekly rehearsals before school from September. I was so proud to see both teams perform so confidently on the big stage. So many people around me commented on the children’s self- belief, their enjoyment and sense of fun. The standard of the competition was extremely high across the primary schools, with a wide range of dance styles. I knew it was going to be tough for our teams to be placed in the top three - to get through to the National Finals. Well, you can imagine the whooping, screaming and tears (of joy!) that came from the Kingsdown supporters, when it was announced our teams were placed 1st and 2nd. An unbelievable result and achievement! Thank you to everyone who came to the competition to support the children or help out in any way. On behalf of all of the children and staff I would like to say a massive thank you to Danni and her team and Mrs Lown. They have all worked so hard to ensure both teams were ready to compete at this outstanding level. I can’t wait for the finals which take place in Oxford in June. Thank you to everyone who has pledged donations to our Kingsdown into Space project. (see last month’s magazine). We really want to make this into a community event for all villagers as well as an amazing learning opportunity for the children. If anyone else is willing and able to make a financial contribution, please contact us through the school office. Thank you, Jo Hygate.

Save the Children work in Syria The war in Syria has been raging for seven years and the humanitarian situation is now worse than ever. There is now a generation of Syrian children who have grown up knowing only the horror and brutality of war. Save the Children is working in the country and its neighbouring countries to support children whose lives have been torn apart. In northwest Syria, Save the Children is operating four primary healthcare facilities and one maternity hospital. On average, 20 000 people receive life-saving health care at these facilites every month. Save the Children runs seven nutrition centres in Syria where children are screened for signs of maluntrition. Food is scarce and expensive so the charity is also distributing emergency food rations. Just £3 can provide life saving rehydration salts for desperately ill children. The next quiz in aid of Save the Children is on 26 th April 7.00pm for 7.30 pm at the Deal Vics Cricket Club CT14 7RQ. £2 per head, no booking required. Walmer Parish Council Clerk to the Council:- Kirsty Holroyd 8 The Strand, Walmer, Kent. CT14 7DY. Tel:- 01304 362 363 Website:- www.walmercouncil.co.uk Email:- walmerparish@btconnect.com Highlights from the Meeting of Walmer Parish Council held on Wednesday 7 th March 2018 at 8 The Strand, Walmer at 7.00 pm Questions and/or observations from the electorate of Walmer:- Dr Alan Bailey of The Beach was concerned that the white railings at Walmer Green were falling into disrepair and might be removed if they became dangerous. The Clerk explained that DDC perceived the railings as a unique and iconic feature of Walmer Green and that as such they would be maintained. Mr Zola raised concerns about the danger of crossing the Dover Road because of the pedestrian traffic generated by the park, the beach, Walmer Nursery, Walmer tennis and croquet club, the café and several bus stops, He has a list with some 230 names of local people who are petitioning Kent County Council for action. The Clerk clarified Kent County Council will not install a road crossing at present as there is no crash data to support it. Cllr Murphy proposed that Walmer Parish Council pay towards the cost of staging a traffic survey at the site in order to establish whether a crossing is justified at approximately £1500 and he will pay the balance from his KCC members’ grant fund. Members resolved that the Council pay 50% of the costs of staging a traffic survey at Dover Road in partnership with Cllr Murphy. Events Working Group Members resolved the following: That Four Jays be requested to supply event toilets at the Brocante at a cost of £440 That TMS Protection be requested to supply stewards for the Brocante at a cost of £390 That the date of Picnic on the Green 2018 be changed to Saturday 18 August Human Resources committee The Clerk informed members that the complaints procedure was underway but the draft was not yet ready to present. Members resolved that funds be made available to run a health check on the Council’s current HR policies and documents. Finance and General Purposes committee Members resolved the following: - That a request from the Deal and Betteshanger Rugby Club for £775.62 for pitch maintenance be rejected. That the council’s insurance policy be renewed at a cost of £905.48

Report of the clerk: - A report had been received that the seat at Gothic Close had been removed following damage caused by a motor vehicle and was beyond repair. The location would be offered as a memorial bench site to residents enquiring at DDC. The Clerk reported that there had been a burst pipe at the allotments over the very cold weekend. The water had finally been turned off on Wednesday afternoon and repairs were due to be carried out the following Tuesday. Royal Marines Heritage Trails – Deal and Walmer The Clerk informed members that the launch of the trail would be at Deal Castle on Monday 23rd April. Date of next meeting Wednesday 4th April 2018 at 7pm at the Parish Office, 8 The Strand, Walmer. Kirsty Holroyd, Clerk to the Council

Experimental Rock Groynes to be installed on Wellington Parade. Dover District Council have in the last year been awarded funding from the Environment Agency for a 5 year beach management plan, which is for the stretch of coastline from Oldstairs Bay through to Sandown Castle in North Deal and will be solely used for maintaining/improving the existing sea defences where deemed necessary. It’s imperative that these works are carried out to ensure beach levels are restored to adequate standards of protection - in order to reduce longshore drift it’s proposed that three rock groynes are installed. One rock groyne will be installed at North Deal by Sandown Castle to stop shingle being lost to the North, and two on Wellington Parade to keep the shingle more localised, to reduce machinery movements when beach recycling.

Trial To make sure that the permanent groynes are in the best location, Dover District Council will test the locations first with temporary groynes which will be made from geo bags filled with shingle The plan is to have two geobag groynes in place for 18 months and monitor the beach on a regular basis with GPS equipment, so that beach movements can be assessed and changed if appropriate when it comes to constructing the long term rock groynes. The proposed site is located at Wellington Parade where a large shingle beach forms the main defence against flooding and erosion to the properties behind. There is a known erosion problem just north of the Kingsdown timber groyne field with the beach crest cutting back to within 5m of the road on occasions At present these erosion losses are mitigated by recycling beach material from Walmer back to Wellington Parade. The southern groyne is located 175m north of the Kingsdown groyne field, and the northern groyne is located at the end of the row of houses on Wellington Parade. The southern groyne is placed to hold material in the most erosive stretch, and the northern groyne is designed to keep material in front of the houses and to reduce recycling distances when moving shingle back to Kingsdown and the south of Wellington parade. North of the houses the beach berm is substantially more than is needed for coast protection and there are no properties at risk. Placement of two permanent rock groynes will begin in September 2019.

Tree walk in Kingsdown, Saturday 24th February. What a very pleasant and informative morning we had! We celebrated thoroughly the value that trees bring to villages (for example sheltering us from strong winds and reducing heating bills). The walk was led by the very experienced and knowledgeable David Carey from Hadlow College. It also provided a chance to meet the volunteer tree wardens of the parish, Val Trewartha and Ingrid Dodd, who work with the parish council and the Kent Tree Warden Network. We learned about how Tree Protection Orders work, how trees in conservation areas are protected and how lucky we are to have a rather unusual Woodland Protection Order on the land all around the entrance to St John’s Church. The walk finished on the beach as we admired the recumbent oak on the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) whose TPO citation states concisely (but rather gloriously) ‘It is a unique Recumbent Oak tree in a unique location’. An appreciative member of the public

Walmer Parish Churches St Mary’s, St Saviour’s, and Blessed Mary of Walmer Open lives, open hands, open churches The Easter Season “Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord” John 20.18 The Easter season continues throughout April and May till Pentecost. This great celebration of the Resurrection is an opportunity to simply rest in the amazing truth that is at the heart of our faith – Christ is Risen! Bp John Pritchard wrote of the Resurrection being the ‘theme tune’ of Christianity, it announces and frames everything we do. Let’s sing that Easter theme with joy – He is Risen Indeed. Alleluia! New Walmer & Cornilo Benefice Update As planned the new benefice of Walmer and Cornilo came in to effect on March 1st and the parishes of Ringwould, Kingsdown, Ripple and Sutton became a single parish. There will be a Special Parochial Church Meeting of the parish of the Cornilo churches on Tuesday 17th April from 7.00pm in Ripple Hall. Churchwardens, deputies, and PCC members will be elected at this meeting. Please do continue to pray for the those involved with the practical aspects of forming a new PCC and making the appointment. I hope that this is a helpful update. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at the details below. WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU www.walmerparishchurches.org - 01304 366 605 41
