Hello everyone, I have had a very exciting time since I last spoke to you. I have been to Perth, Australia, to visit my son and then onto Bali for a week for the wedding of one of my grandsons and finally on my return, the birth of a great-grand daughter Mia Rose who is the first girl to be born into the Clark family for 118 years! Now back to reality, and the lovely sunshine. I do apologise for being slightly behind with this double issue of Rural Roundup but it has been a bit of a rush one way and another. I am informed that the list of church services are correct going to press, but owing to the holiday period it would be best to check on the websites for any changes. That is all from me for now, enjoy all the activities available to you and let us hope the good weather continues. Happy holidays, see you in September. Our fabulous dance team, which consist of 30 children from Years 1 - 6 have been working hard to learn their routine for a National Competition. The dance team went to The Great Big Dance Off Primary Schools National Competition in Oxford and were placed an amazing 6th place out of 32 schools that took part. We are all enormously proud of every single one of them who danced their socks off on stage on what was a very hot and long day. A special thank you needs to go to Danni Jenner and her team for choreographing the routine. Our other Sports Teams have a busy term and have many athletics events coming up; also, our Infant Agility Team will be attending the County Final and representing the Dover District in Gillingham. We wish them the best of luck for this competition.

Thanks to Deborah and Simon Longland for organising this year’s hanging baskets around the village and to Peter Cross for making the new noticeboard which is now big enough to take two rows of A4 posters. We hope you like them. The Character Appraisal for the Kingsdown Conservation Area has at last been formally adopted by Dover District Council and will be taken into account when considering all planning applications within the (now extended) conservation area. More information at https://www.dover.gov.uk/Planning/Conservation/Conservation-Areas/ Kingsdown-Conservation-Area.aspx On 10th June David Carey from the Kent Tree and Pond Partnership led 25 villagers on a tree walk around Kingsdown. We started at the world famous English Oak growing in the shingle with no obvious sign of a trunk and finished at a Tulip Tree. David was impressed by just how many beautiful trees we have. Our AGM is on 17th July. 7:30pm at the Kings Head. Free drink before and sandwiches afterwards. Do get in touch if you are interested in joining the committee. The winners of the Green Ideas Competition will be announced at the AGM – First prize £100 for adults, £75 for 12-17 and £25 for under 12s. Details from Kingsdown Post Office or at http://www.kingsdownconservation.co.uk/kcgcomp/ Don’t forget the Autumn Social at the school on Saturday 18th November. Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Jane Jobey Tel:- 01304 381 702 Since my last write-up winter has been banished by a glorious May with the exception of a couple of days of rain towards the end of the month. The head gardener and I have started to enjoy the garden again as colour returns, plants dust themselves off and start to give us pleasure. The hanging baskets and troughs are in place and coming along nicely. I was very pleased with myself regarding the quality and profusion of roses in the garden this year until I took stock and became aware that the roses growing locally were really looking good so it wasn’t my expertise I am sorry to say as it appears to be a very good year for roses. To stop you getting bored in the long hot summer weeks ahead here are some jobs to be getting on with: 1. Cut back your faded Penstemon flowers to just above a bud to encourage more flowers. 2. By cutting back growth and dead heading plants in the hanging baskets you can encourage new flowers and foliage. Once done feed and water. 3. Cut back hardy geraniums and delphiniums after first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms. 4. Dead head roses, sweet peas, bedding plants and perennials to stop seeding and encourage further flowering. 5. Towards the end of August containers which had controlled released fertilizer in the compost will start to run out of steam so begin feeding with tomato feed. 6. A good time to trim hedges. Date for your diary: September 25th Philip Oostenbrink, Head Gardener of Canterbury Cathedral will be giving a talk starting at 7.45pm in Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School hall. Stay healthy. Bob Perry

Don’t throw it away – Give it away! Give and get stuff for FREE nearby! www.ilovefreegle.org Defibrillator for Ringwould…..After an initial proposal to the Ringwould

with Kingsdown Parish Council, I am very pleased to inform all Ringwould residents that a Community Public Access Defibrillator is due to be installed to the external wall of the Five Bells Public house; this will be in memory of Tony Merritt previous Manager who sadly passed away in 2015. The Parish Council have kindly given a grant that will cover the cost of purchasing the cabinet to house this vital piece of equipment and for the installation. The Deal First Responders have kindly donated the defibrillator and although the AED equipment can be used by untrained people we plan to hold a training session in the village hall which will also cover how to perform CPR on a casualty, date to be confirmed. Sudden cardiac arrest happens around 140,000 times a year in the UK making it one of the UK’s largest killers. The potential for saving life is dependent upon time and Public Access Defibrillators play a very vital and important role in rural areas and increase the chance of survival until emergency services are in attendance. If you are interested in attending the training, or just in finding out more please contact David Pinkney, 1 Chain Cottage Front Street Ringwould. 374 077

Highlights of the Parish Council meeting held on Monday 12th June 2017. Administration Councillors were appointed onto Committees/Working Parties, Cllr Lead Projects & Village Hall liaisons for the next year. The Website has been updated accordingly where full information can be found. Revisions to standing orders were agreed. Finance The payment schedule was approved. Planning It was noted that approximately 50 people came to the Ringwould with Kingsdown Public Meeting about the planning application for an 85 dwelling development at Dover Road on 2nd June. DDC has agreed to extend consultation to 29th June. Councillors responsible for Planning on Ringwould with Kingsdown, Parish Council will seek to liase with Ripple & Walmer Parish Councils to oppose this planning application. It was also noted that DDC have rejected the application for the change of use of Ringwould Alpines site. The Planning Log is available on the website. Five Applications and five Decisions were received by DDC last month. Environment and Amenities Preliminary judging for Front Gardens in Bloom was completed week ending 9th June and final judging on 22nd June; awards ceremony will take place at 6:30pm 10th July at Kingsdown Village Hall. Appreciative thanks extended to volunteer Ms S Lamoon for work on the Triangle flowerbed on Glen Road/The Rise, Kingsdown; given proximity to the A258 it was decided that the Ringwould flower bed will be returned to grass so that it can be mowed conveniently. The Parish Council noted that the ‘No shooting’ notices, recommended by the Rural Police and put up in April in the PC owned Freedown Woods, have been taken down by persons unknown and need replacing. Communications A vacancy for Parish Councillor has been published on the website and noticeboards. Friends of Kingsdown Play Area (FKPP) Phase One of the new play area was opened on Friday 12 th May and was very well received; the Parish Council thoroughly commended FKPP for all their hard work. FKPP are now working hard to raise funds for Phase Two. Freedown Woods and The Lynch Two submissions to provide a management plan (and support to action it) have been received from two not-for-profit agencies; the submission from the Kent Wildlife Trust was approved subject to outstanding references. A grant application will be made to cover the cost of the management plan. The next Parish Council Meeting will be held on Monday 10th July 2017 at Kingsdown Village Hall commencing at 7.00pm. All residents are very welcome. Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council 15

Ripple Parish Council

Clerk:- Mrs Karen Castle, 01304 364 406:- clerk@rippleparish.co.uk www.ripplepc.kentparishes.gov.uk Highlights from Ripple Parish Council Meeting Thursday 15th June 2017 Dover Road Development - Cllr Dougill gave feedback from both the Walmer & Kingsdown public meetings that he had attended and public opinion is overwhelmingly in objection to the development. Following a site meeting with DDC, there is a believe that they will also object. District Councillor Report - Cllr Manion reported additional money from the last budget was used for Adult Social Services due to the current market being almost unsustainable for elderly care. Therefore in order to make it more sustainable, more money is required for care providers so they can be paid travel money for example. Cllr Manion said KCC have a new scheme in place for a careers pathway to encourage care workers into the industry and that they are very keen for this to work. Road Safety Update - Due to budget restrictions and low crash site statistics KCC were unable to attend to a site meeting regarding ways to make the the junction safer at the top of Mongeham road. However Cllr Manion kindly offered to send an email on our behalf to KCC to see if anything else could be done. We now have six volunteers for the proposed Ripple Speedwatch Group and the next step will be a training session for the volunteers. Clerk reported that the white give way and stop white lines at all junctions in the village had been repainted. Ripple Church - Clerk read out a thank you letter from Dr Davey thanking the Parish Council for the donation toward the upkeep of the church yard. Planter - A member of the public very kindly volunteered to look after the planter on the corner of Mongeham Road and has made a great job of planting it up with an array of colourful plants. Many thanks to Rita and her friend for giving up their own time for this project. . Councillors kindly donated their own money to pay for the compost and plants. NEXT MEETING: Thursday 13th July at 7pm Karen Castle, Clerk to Ripple Parish Council

Walmer Parish Council Clerk to the Council:- Kirsty Holroyd 8 The Strand, Walmer, Kent. CT14 7DY. Tel:- 01304 362 363 Website:- www.walmercouncil.co.uk Email:- walmerparish@btconnect.com

Minutes of the Meeting of Walmer Parish Council held on Wednesday, 14 th June 2017 at 8 The Strand, Walmer at 7.00 pm Chairman’s Report Cllr Heath thanked all those Councillors and volunteers who had given up their time to make the free Kites on the Green event which had taken place the previous Saturday so successful. It had been enjoyed and appreciated by the whole community. At a meeting with Bill Butler the launch event for the Royal Marines Trail scheduled for the 23rd April 2018 had been discussed. The event will coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Zeebrugge. Questions and/or observations from the Electorate of Walmer Cllr Mrs M Beard-Gould reported on a further road traffic accident at the Granville Road/Dover Road junction which has been a black spot for years but the crash data does not currently support any additional traffic calming measures. Cllr Derek Murphy, newly elected KCC representative for Walmer undertook to look into this. Surgeries - Next surgery is scheduled for Saturday,15 th July. Cllr Heath and Cllr Thompson to attend. Planning Committee Cllr Grant reported that a recent meeting had been held in St Saviours Church in order to accommodate the 53 members of the public who wished to comment on the proposed development at the top of Dover Road. Walmer in Bloom Resolved that the A&E Committee be asked to consider a new project of planting in the Drill Field Access Road. 100th Anniversary of the opening of Walmer Aerodrome Cllr Mrs Beard-Gould reported that formal invitations would be sent out. A meeting had also taken place with the Choir Leader and so all the musical aspects had been sorted out. An initial press release has been published in the East Kent Mercury to inform members of the public that they too can be involved if they wish. Cllr Mrs Beard-Gould also reported that a letter had been received from the Duke of York, to be read out on the day and included in the Commemorative Programme. Cllr Grant reported that the Commemorative Stand is now complete and would be stored by the manufacturer until it can be installed at the Freedown. Report of the Clerk A resident had complained about motor homes parking at The Beach and wanted councillors to support a residents’ only parking from 18.30 until 08.30.After a lengthy discussion members felt that they could not support such a proposal since the inconvenience to walkers, residents’ guests, members of the sailing club and other evening visitors to the area would outweigh any benefit of deterring motor homes parking. The Clerk has submitted a written list of long term complaints concerning Granville Road toilets compiled by Cllr Thompson to Dover District Council asking for them to be prioritised. Next meeting of the council will be held at 7.p.m. on Wednesday July 5th at the council offices, 8. The Strand, Walmer. Kirsty Holroyd 19

Kingsdown & Ringwould WI Secretary: - Linda Dalton Email: - lindadalton4@gmail.com

As both of our usual lady reporters are absent this month, the delightful duty of reporting on our monthly meeting has fallen to me. We gathered on a beautiful sunny afternoon, at Ringwould Village Hall to hear an interesting and informative presentation on the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Air Ambulance by David Fagg. David, a fundraiser and outreach member of the rescue service, spoke both knowledgeably and with passion about the medical service it provides to the British public. He told us where the service is based and how speedily they can arrive, reaching areas ambulances could never get to in a fraction of the time. The trained paramedics administer immediate treatment and are saving lives even before the helicopter takes off for the nearest hospital. I think we all felt we are so lucky to have this wonderful service in Kent and the surrounding district. We showed our appreciation of David’s talk by filling his charity box with our donations before he left. Tea and biscuits followed with the usual animated chat. It is always good to catch up with friends! Our competition was ‘a medical item’ and Mary Sullivan gave us all a good chuckle when she produced the winning entry, an item of a somewhat personal nature, shall we say! Please join us at the next meeting one July 10th at Ringwould Village Hall when we look forward to a very special presentation on Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging by Tsuyoko Page.
