R.N.L.I.

The recent Lifeboat Christmas Fair held at the “King’s Head” Kingsdown raised the grand sum of £796.00. Many thanks to everyone who came and supported us, despite the inclement weather. Also to those who kindly donated Raffle Prizes. A special thank you to Amanda and Alex for all their help and hospitality on the day. There is one raffle prize unclaimed. It is a yellow ticket 420. Name of Kathleen but no telephone number. Please contact 373 651 Sylvia Main (on behalf of Walmer, Deal & District Lifeboat Branch).

Kingsdown Annual Art Exhibition 2016 The Kingsdown Annual Art Exhibition is an important event in the village calendar and has been very successful in attracting local artists and visitors. The Exhibition was held on 29 th & 30th October and the standard was exceptionally high and greatly admired by all visitors. The Exhibition hosted 172 exhibits from 33 artists of which sixteen works of art were sold raising £448.60 after expenses. The proceeds from the event make a significant contribution to the Church building fund thus enabling work on the West Window to commence in November, but there is still much more restoration work to be done. This year’s Exhibition was the last to be promoted by David & Lesley Dobby who have run it for the last five years. Next year the Art Exhibition will have new promoters. David L Dobby

Baptismal Rolls

The repair and re-framing of the St John’s baptismal rolls has been completed. They are now back on the wall where they belong thanks to all of you who generously contributed to the work. If you have family members whose names are on them, do go and have a look. A big thank you to Ray Stanley who has made a lovely job of the frames. Elizabeth Bembridge

Yes? Then Please Help! Your Votes Are Needed Friends of Kingsdown Play Park need your vote! If you are on Facebook, please search for and join the "Deal Community Christmas Fair 2016" group and scroll down the page to look for their poll that is being run until the fair takes place on the 18th December. The two good causes with the most votes in the poll will get a share of the profits made from the fair (last year it made almost £2000). FKPP are hanging on to second place at the moment but they need more votes to keep them safely in the running. If successful, the money will make a real difference to how many pieces of play equipment they hope to install early next spring. So please, if you’re a facebooker, vote for Friends of Kingsdown Play Park!! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1314901645202548

KINGSDOWN CAROL SINGING

Once again it is time to come carol singing around Kingsdown. We welcome everyone to join us for this lovely tradition. You don’t have to live in Kingsdown to come along, or stay for the whole evening. We will always start at the Meeting Point but may have to alter routes due to weather. There are no auditions, no rehearsals, just turn up and sing. It is good fun. Wrap up warmly, bring a torch and we'll provide the carol sheets. This year we are starting at 6.30pm each night and finishing by 8.30pm except on Christmas Eve when we start at 7pm and keep going till we have visited all the pubs. All money collected will be divided between The Church Fabric Fund and The Mission to Seafarers. Donations may be left at Del’s Village Store. Looking forward to seeing you . Next year’s programme is coming together. There will be more on sustainability in February; Ian Tittley from the Natural History Museum will speak on Kent Seaweeds on March 14th; John Buckingham will make a welcome return to talk about Bird Migration in April; and there will be a Tree Walk around the village in May. Dates will be on our website and on posters around the village. Occasionally we are challenged as to why we have not made a fuss about a particular planning application, and so we would like to explain. We are not a statutory body consulted by DDC, and if we were to make an ‘official’ objection it would be seen to represent our members’ views. We cannot presume to know what all of our 400+ members think about a particular planning matter, but we are aware that there are often differing opinions. It is only in a very rare situation, eg the beach hut proposals of a few years ago, that we are made aware of the strong feelings of the majority of our members and are thus able to voice our concerns as a Group. Occasionally, when an application is thought, for example, to impinge significantly on an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we will flag it up to members so that they may object individually if they are so minded. We are often contacted by people seeking advice – not always KCG members - and we try our best to help them find the answers from those who are professionally involved. Our aim is to give members easy access to planning information so that they are free to make up their own minds and, if warranted, to express their opinions through the correct channels i.e. the DDC planning portal. Our website gives easy access to information about new planning applications and updates on previous ones. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Annie, events@kingsdownconservation.co.uk

Kingsdown Garden Society Secretary:- Mr T Ridley-Ellis Tel:- 01304 381 084 To carry on where I left off in the November issue, all the shrubs have come under severe attack. The garden looks better for it. Note to myself to buy a good quality shredder! By the way, the head gardener is very pleased with my pruning efforts. I believe you will agree the summer was a good one. It started in mid-July and went on until nearly the end of October. As it’s now getting dark early you certainly have to plan your day in the garden. There is always something to do, so here are a few things you could get on with in December and January: Prune wisteria, cutting back summer side shoots to two or three buds. Prune climbing roses, cutting away diseased or damaged growth. Tie new shoots to a support. Cut older flowering shoots by two thirds of their length. Prune rose bushes whilst they are dormant. Plant up winter containers with hardy cyclamen, ivy and skimmia. Remember, don’t leave tulip bulbs too late before planting. Cut back foliage from ornamental grasses, clipping them to within a few centimetres from the ground. Remove old hellebore leaves to make the new blooms more visible. So wrap up warm and get out there. I am sure you will feel better for it. The first meetings of 2017 are Monday 30th January when Roy Wall will be talking about showing vegetables and flowers. On Monday 27th February we have Mark Brent, the head gardener of Walmer Castle. It only leaves me to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy New Year. See you soon. Bob Perry 9

Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School

Head teacher: - Jo Hygate, Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD. Secretary Maggi Bowden, Tel:- 01304 373 734 The junior classes are fully involved in this year’s ‘Business Project’. This is when the children set up a business or run an event, with the ultimate aim of making a profit. This profit will be divided between the school charity, Starlight, and the class. So far we have had the Year 3 Quiz, which has been written and delivered by the children. Year 3 (with Year 2) are hoping to go to London this year to see Matilda, so any profits will offset the cost of the trip. The school charity this year is Starlight. The charity monitors Jo Hygate Sebastian and Isaac, who chose this charity and have already organised one fundraising event - where the children could exchange their school uniform for clothes in colours of the charity, blue, purple and yellow. Further charity fundraising events will take place during the school year. A final reminder that our Christmas Fayre will be held straight after school on Thursday 8th December. Please come and support your local school. Jo Hygate

CHRISTMAS FAYRE

One of his first tasks will to review the procedures of the Parish Council with a view to ensuring the smooth running of the Parish Council in the future. In November Cllr. Nick Jackaman resigned from the council. Members would like to express their thanks for the contribution Nick has made over the last ten years in representing Ringwould and his work as Vice Chair of the Council. We all wish him well in the future. Co-option of councillors The council has vacancies for councillors, which have already been advertised by Dover District council. The role of the councillor is important in order to reflect the views of all the residents of Ringwould and Kingsdown. It is an interesting role and keeps you in touch with everything that is going on in the villages. So if you are interested in becoming a councillor please contact the clerk immediately for an application form and you would be welcome to an informal discussion. Interviews will be held during December. Friends of Kingsdown Playpark The PC have agreed to make an immediate grant of £5K out of the 10K allocated for the improvement to the playpark. This will enable the Friends to use the £10k grant from ‘Awards for All’. Phase One of the new park will be implemented as soon as possible. Lisa Dennison and her colleagues have submitted plans for the layout, which will integrate the existing equipment with the new. Councillors congratulated Lisa and her colleagues on the fund raising efforts so far and hope that the remaining funds can be secured. Freedown Wood Cllrs. have agreed to develop a management plan for the wood in order to promote the growth of wild flowers and mature trees. Zetland Arms Terrace Cllrs. are in discussion with Shepherd Neame over the licencing of the terrace in front of the Zetland public house as there are a number of outstanding issues to be resolved. Kingsdown Toilets Cllrs. met representatives of Dover District Council to consider the transfer of the toilets to the Parish Council. St John’s Church Kingsdown was full to capacity on Remembrance Sunday, which was also Cathy’s very last service before leaving for Cornwall. Not only was the Church full of people, it was full of poppies too. What a wonderful sight, over 3,500 of them. It all started with Masheeda Downing, mother of local hero Anthony Downing who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2011, suggesting a small display of hand-crafted poppies at the Memorial for the Service. Masheeda called on friends and the local community to start making poppies using any medium. Like Topsy it grew and ended up with a spectacular display of all shapes and sizes, including some sent from Germany. Masheeda would like me to convey her heart-felt thanks to all who made Poppies. Ed

Poppies in the Church

Time to say goodbye. I would just like to say a final “goodbye” to everyone – or perhaps it would be more appropriate to say “au revoir” (as I do hope to see you again) as I head for Cornwall. I really can’t thank everyone enough for the kind words, cards, letters and gifts that I have received during the past few weeks – I have been truly overwhelmed – and I thank you for your kindness and generosity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those (and you know who you are) for their unstinting help and support, in so many different ways, during the time that I have been here. I really can’t believe it is six plus years. I will indeed miss each and every one of you – and whatever the future holds for you and for the parishes - I leave you with my love, my prayers, my best wishes and every blessing. Yours in Christ Cathy PS. Thanks also to everyone for their generous contributions to “Help for Heroes” £1,090.00 was collected.

We thought this quote summed up the evening nicely – ‘As a 50 year old child, that was the best bonfire and fireworks display I have ever seen’. Congratulations to Reggie Bates (pictured} who won the Guy Competition and well done to all the boys and girls who entered. The Parish Council has been notified by Dover District Council that the telephone box in Chapel Lane will be decommissioned as it has not been used once in the past twelve months. Open your heart to fostering Kent County Council urgently needs 200 foster carers across the county and at least 50 new carers are needed in East Kent this year. Without more carers, it is difficult to provide the stable, permanent homes which can make a crucial difference to the future of a vulnerable young person. Kent County Council needs homes for older children, aged 13-18, supporting them towards independence, for children with disabilities and for sibling groups to help keep brothers and sisters together. Fostering with KCC means giving a home to local children with local support, whenever you need it, in your own community and a local social worker. KCC will provide you a package of support including excellent payments and training. Foster carers need to have a spare room, can be married, single, living with a partner, with or without children of their own. Prospective foster carers can hear presentations from people doing this rewarding role at information events being held around the county. Full details can be found on the fostering website www.kentfostering.co.uk/events Alternatively, Telephone:- 03000 420 002 and speak to one of our advisors.

From The Rev John Winn Dear Friends, As I write it is November 5th and I’m expecting the sound of fireworks at any minute, Advent is still three weeks away, and yet this is the December/January issue of Rural Roundup; alas this is the stuff of deadlines. It’s a great privilege to be able to write to you again after an absence of six years or so, during which time Cathy has kept us entertained, informed and edified and we thank her for that. During the interregnum, the plan is for me to write occasionally but for others from the four parishes to contribute too. It is hoped this will make for an interesting variety of letters and tap into the wide range of skills and experiences that exist across our churches. As individuals and as a Church we are on a constant journey, change is inevitable if we are not to stand still. Cathy has moved on to a new ministry; new opportunities of ministry will arise for many of us during this period of interregnum and maybe beyond into the future to enable our churches to continue a strong Christian presence in our villages. Advent epitomises what we understand as our journey of faith. The four Sundays leading up to Christmas each have a theme which traces the progress of mankind’s awareness of the presence of God and his influence in the world. This sense of journey is marked by the lighting of a new candle on each of the four Sundays celebrating the key figures faith. Beginning with Abraham and the ancient Patriarchs of old, the first to be aware of the presence of God, through to the prophets who spoke of the promise of a saviour, and then to John the Baptist, the Lord’s Forerunner as he is known, who declared that this saviour had come and would soon make himself known. And finally, on the fourth Sunday of Advent we celebrate the contribution of Mary the Mother of Jesus who willingly submitted her life to God’s purpose in bearing his Son. Our Advent observations span many hundreds of years of this huge journey of faith as mankind was prepared for the coming of Jesus. As we meditate on the events and personalities of this great faith journey let us use this time to meditate on our own faith journey as we prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus anew into our lives and into our Church this Christmas. May I wish you a fruitful Advent and a happy and blessed Christmas. John.

Kingsdown & Ringwould WI Secretary: - Linda Dalton Email: - lindadalton4@gmail.com

What a treat it was to listen to Steve Ottewill telling us about his life as a silversmith in his Evegate Workshop near Ashford! His passion for his work was so evident as he talked about making and designing silverware, from the beautiful and elegant processional mace for a university in the North of England, to chalices for churches, to the Challenge cup stand for the Henley Regatta, or, and now for something completely different, to rather large ornate and strange pieces for the potentates of the Middle East, usually adorned by a camel! I think the celebration cake stand for the Sultan of Oman took the prize for size and decoration in this category! Steve talked about the music of the workshop...the sound of workers hammering the sheets of silver into shape. A most inspiring speaker. As usual, we have a lot to look forward to. We are decorating a tree for the Christmas Tree Festival at Trinity Church Deal, on December 2 nd. Our Christmas lunch is on December 6 th. Next year we are privileged to have Terry Waite speaking at our Annual Federation Meeting in March. In May, we start our trips out to interesting places with a visit to Eltham Palace. However, it isn’t always about fun; a member from Walmer WI has arranged a petition condemning the litter on our local roads, particularly the A2 and M20, and has sent the signatures with a letter, to our M.P. I am sure we are all anxious for something to be done about the rubbish on the roads at the gateway to England, and the WI can be very effective in getting things done by putting pressure on the right people. The last meeting of the year will be a members only Christmas Extravaganza! Do consider joining us in the New Year, on January 9th. In the meantime we wish all our readers a peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year. Christine Smith.

Walmer Castle

There’s a new broom at Walmer Castle and she’s determined to sweep up local people and organisations to enjoy the benefits of this unique little building. Kate Olpin who recently took over as the Property Manager at the Castle and Gardens, the title’s a little misleading, she’s in charge of everything to do with the successful running of this survivor from the days of Henry VIII and his perpetual worries about an invasion from France. She is particularly pleased to be back at Walmer Castle several years after she was here on a school trip which coincided with a visit from the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who for many years was the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and had an apartment at the castle. “We were all allowed to gather at the entrance to the castle to greet the Queen Mother,” said Kate. “I was here on a school trip with my sister and for all of us it was a special moment which made our trip even more memorable.” Kate’s first step is to hold a stakeholder’s open day and she has invited a wide range of local councils, local organisations and others to the castle so that they can see for themselves just what it has to offer and how it might benefit the people of Walmer and other nearby towns and villages. “The castle is an important part of our community and my hope is to enable local people to take advantage of everything we have to offer,” said Kate. “I’m new here and don’t yet know everybody so if I’ve accidentally missed your organisation off the invitation list then please contact me at the castle,” she said. The first open day will be held on December 8th at the castle and more will follow later. 33

Hawkshill Freedown sometimes known as ‘The Glen’ Walmer Parish Council is looking for volunteers with an interest in conservation to give up a few hours once a month to help keep the Hawkshill Freedown, which is situated right next to Walmer Castle, looking good for several years. The existing team of volunteers and parish councillors have been keeping unwanted growths of brambles and blackthorn around the edges of the Freedown down to manageable limits to keep the area open for local people.

Volunteers meet once a month to cut back and get rid of the unwanted vegetation. North of the Freedown a major conservation project to provide a natural habitat for flora and fauna has just started. The aim is to coppice and pollard a number of trees to open up an area of the Freedown and then carry out herbaceous planting and hedgerow regeneration. A pathway will provide access for users of the Freedown to enjoy the new light and airy environment. Cllr Clive Grant, chair of the working group which looks after the Freedown for Walmer Parish Council, explained: “By the time this project is completed we will have returned a part of the Freedown to its original condition of chalk grassland as well as providing improved access to members of the public. It will also provide an interesting contrast to the stunning sea views already on offer from the upper plateau. It’s a great place to volunteer with the added incentives of contributing to our countryside and keeping fit - all at the same time. Those interested can contact Cllr. Grant through the Parish Office, 01304 362 363.

Knitting for the Needy A Walmer community knitting group which has sent jumpers, blankets, hats and other knitted clothes to countries around the world and to other organisations which help those in need is busy getting on with producing new pieces for Christmas. The knitting for the needy group was founded by Pat Scanlon just a few years ago with three knitting enthusiasts in a small side room at the Walmer Baptist Church in Kelveden Road. The group proved so popular that they soon had to move into the large church hall to have enough room for all the knitting ladies and their equipment and now has around 30 regular knitters. The group is funded by the members themselves who bring their own wool and by donors who make gifts of wool. Since they started knitted items have been sent to the Ukraine, South Africa, Chernobyl, Gambia and to the sailors society and the Deal Food Bank. Special projects have included: 72 dolls for the Downs school to be dressed as Olympic athletes for their prize day. Table top sales of knitted goods to raise money for Marie Curie and Macmillan. A big knit which raised £1715 to pay for mosquito nets in Africa. Over £1500 for Willing and Abel.

Table top sales are held regularly at the Baptist Church Hall and at the Brocante on Walmer Green organised by the Parish Council. “We have a great time meeting friends and helping others,” said organiser Rita Bishop.” Lots of our members have suffered personal tragedy and are very pleased to be able to help other people in need.” The club meets every Tuesday from 2-4pm at the Baptist Church Hall where, as well as enjoying helping others, they can have a cup of tea and a chat with the friends they have made since joining the club. New members are always welcome – as are wool donations.
